inverse head and shoulder??
what is length to form a cup and handle to make it valid?
I bought for longer term in IRA, on pullback to 10.61
I tried to paste the chart....sorry, grrrrrrrrrrrr
Nice chart but not on fire today ... we have a red candle, it wouldn't show up on my filters.
Thanks for this pick !
The chart is nice, but the story behind the stock is what makes this potential dyn-o-mite. Making diesel fuel out of discarded natural gas is like spinning gold out of straw. As oil prices continue to rise, this stock (as well as other alternative energy stocks - DSTI, SPIR etc) will get more publicity. If successful, this can be an answer to our energy problems.
There have been great articles written about the technology - one in Forbes last year comparing it to the next Saudi Arabia. - In fact, Mike Schaefer who writes the "Peak Energy" report and the "Wealth Daily" newsletter has this as his secret number one pick!
I've read the story ,sounds great..........BUT, will it come through???? time will tell
I'll re-ask my 2 TA questions...........
does anyone see a reversed head and shoulder pattern?
within that H/S is there a valid cup and handle (head and left shoulder)? what is the generally accepted time that must be allowed for a cup/handle pattern to be validated?
I'm not versed in chart patterns (head/shoulders, cups etc). But, i think I would be wise to learn because there might come a time I will need to look more long term.
I generally day trade and rely on fibs almost exclusively.
Thanks for opportunity to ask my questions.
Here are some guidelines, but they are not set in stone..there are several schools of thought on this formation....#1 The duration for the cup to form,,is usually 7-65 weeks..the depth of the cup should be between 12%and 33 % based on price...#2 The time period for the handle to form is at least 1-2 weeks if not longer..since this is based on a longer period,,,maybe between 14-16 weeks,,again this not an exact figure.#3 make sure the "handle low is Above the 200day MA.#4 the validation period wouuld be 5-6 weeks,a period of 8 weeks is considered normal.with the volume on the breakout being,at least 50% more then normal.. #5 Cups with a "higher right lip" usually prove to be more profitable,as well being less likely to fail on breakout.#6 there is more then one type of cup...there is more info on this but this might help some.,
imo - a cup with handle is usually used as a continuation pattern and therefore needs to have a prior uptrend(for it to be a continuation must "continue" something)
theres a head & shoulder "reversal" pattern right here:
Looks like a Barr formation starting in April,,with 3 spikes in April and May
Just to add this nice post by snowcat on the other board about SYNM:
http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?topic=992.msg5246#msg5246
TGE does 3-d seismic surveys. When it comes to searching for oil, this is one of the best and most economical methods. On Fire today.
Many oil related stox have been down despite big oil prices - remember- the only one who makes pure profit on the high price of oil is Saudi Arabia (and maybe George Bush). The rest have drilling and shipping expenses which are hurt by the high price of oil.
TGE is a consulting firm in high demand and with the price of oil high, searching for new wells will be top priority!
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=TGE&t=1y
SYNM is consider the TASR of oil industry by some experts. Dont know mroe then that on it.
Thanks for the informative replies.
I thought I saw the inverse H/S pattern..
regarding the cup/handle ......DUH !!! each inverse/reversed H/S pattern will have a cup/handle won't it?
BUT...a nicely formed C/H will, maybe, give more credence to the reversed H/S ?
Thanks to everyone for your comments.
I would wait until this one pulls back to about $9.00 - the chart says it all as it's had a nice run up but must pause before another run
http://www.wallstreettape.com/charts/custom/charts.asp?ticker=synm
I've been interested in SYNM for a while - I have it on my "Alternative Energy" watch-list.
Being new to reading charts, I'd like comments on this chart.
I also think that there might be some interest for the stock next week:

Cheers.
(Nice with a long weekend to have time to look things over! ;) )
Have a nice one, everybody.
Ooops! Forgot the chart! ::)
SYNM is a very interesting story, but an uber-speculative one.
Here is the company's latest 10-Q: http://biz.yahoo.com/e/050510/synm10-q.html
Unfortunately, no financial reports BUT a clear warning that the company is far from profitability and that it actually requires additional finance. Nevertheless, I will continue to follow this stock and will jump in once it pops again - but with a very tight stop loss. Pure speculation for the short run, great shorting opportunity for the longer run.
Time to buy the Pennant flag.
I might add more to my IRA.
I like the story and with oil increasing upwards it could be a winner (long term)
Institutions have bought abt 71/2 mil shares since March.(15 days of average volume)
I heard a rumor of the company exploring possibilities of converting coal....methane?
oil shale?...don't know. The USA has some of the largest coal reserves in the world ( so I'm told)
I have not yet found any definitive news to substantiate the rumor.
good luck !!
I just listened to the replay of the July 26th SYNM conference call.
You can axcess the replay at:
http://www.syntroleum.com
I like what I heard.
The other gas to liquid play here is RTK which has been doing great over the last week.
They are showing weakness today. They are a little more diversified than SYNM and their balance sheet looks a little more stable. The oil service companies are moving right now and RTK does more service than SYNM. With oil prices rising, this company does give speculators a bit of hope that their product can be economical and widly used.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=RTK
SYNM has also adapted the Fischer-Troupe method to use air in the synthesis instead of oxygen.
The other pipe dream is coming out of the Canadian Oil Sands.....but that is another topic
good article how The energy Bill should help SYNM. Also look at RTK and SSL if Gas to Liquid technology is your bag.
Syntroleum Sees Significant Domestic Coal-to-Liquids Opportunities
Thursday August 11, 8:34 am ET
TULSA, Okla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 11, 2005--Syntroleum Corporation (Nasdaq:SYNM - News) announced that the two bills signed by President George W. Bush this week provide significant economic incentives for the development of ultra-clean fuels derived from coal using Fischer-Tropsch (FT) technology such as the Syntroleum® Process.
The Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct 2005) signed by President Bush on Monday, authorizes a $1.6 billion allocation for research and development funding of clean-coal initiatives, including the production of ultra-clean fuels. In addition, the legislation provides for loan guarantees associated with the construction of commercial scale coal-to-liquids (CTL) plants.
The second piece of legislation, entitled the Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient Transportation Equity Act of 2005 (SAFETEA), signed by President Bush yesterday, provides a 50 cents per gallon excise tax credit for alternative fuels. This includes ultra-clean FT fuels made from coal.
"These two pieces of legislation are very positive factors affecting our analysis of the CTL business opportunities. We will assess the impact these bills have on the probability of securing the loan guarantees expected for commercial CTL projects," said Jack Holmes, President and CEO of Syntroleum. "We expect that the economic incentives contained in the bills will attract significant additional capital to the multiple projects that have been proposed to Syntroleum. We will participate directly or indirectly in this emerging industry based upon the conclusion of our studies."
The company has already been awarded $4.5 million to evaluate and refine its CTL technology. Syntroleum is in the process of examining potential CTL projects in the United States and Australia.
According to Energy Information Agency data, the United States is the largest coal reserve holder in the world. If only 5 percent were utilized to produce ultra-clean transportation fuels, it would be equivalent to the oil reserves in the United States.
"This action by Congress is evidence of the need for new energy technologies to bring additional supplies to the market. Syntroleum is well positioned with its proprietary technology to benefit from this legislation. Energy supply and demand fundamentals are making commercial application of our technologies more and more attractive," Holmes said.
Syntroleum would like to acknowledge the continued support and efforts of the Oklahoma delegation, specifically Sen. James Inhofe, Rep. John Sullivan and Rep. Tom Cole, and Montana Sen. Conrad Burns, for their role in highlighting the benefits of FT fuels produced from either natural gas or coal.
Syntroleum Corporation (Nasdaq:SYNM - News) owns a proprietary GTL process for converting natural gas as well as other materials like coal and petroleum coke into liquid hydrocarbons. The company plans to use its technology, as well as others, to develop and participate in gas-to-liquids and coal-to-liquids projects in a number of global locations. The price and demand for oil is not going to go down in the near future - so converting ng to liquid is becoming more economical.
WE BURN OFF THE EQUIVILANT OF MILLIONS OF BARRELS OF OIL A DAY IN NG!!!
Others to watch: NGS, ENG and RTK
I may be crazy, but I bought SYNM today.
The monster-drop it took a couple of days ago to me seems like over-reacting.
The bad news recently would shake out a lot of people who was waiting for another oilwell, but I like the company for it's speciality.
It took a less beating today, hopefully now the worst is over. ;D
Phew! ;D
It is inching up again...+6% so far.
Crossing my fingers! ;)

Syntroleum Reports Agreements in Business Development Activities in Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and Egypt
Thursday November 17, 12:09 pm ET
TULSA, Okla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 17, 2005--Syntroleum (Nasdaq:SYNM - News) announced that three recently signed memorandum of understandings (MOU) could lead to the construction of a gas-to-liquids plant using its proprietary Fischer-Tropsch technology.
Syntroleum signed a MOU with the Government of Papua New Guinea to examine the development of a 50,000 barrels per day GTL plant as part of an industrial complex dedicated to gas-based industries near the capital city of Port Moresby. As part of the MOU, Syntroleum will work with the government of Papua New Guinea Ministry of Planning and Development to study the feasibility of a large GTL plant that would share a natural gas pipeline and infrastructure facilities with various other possible gas conversion participants, including ammonia, methanol and power plant developers.
Proved and probable natural gas reserves in Papua New Guinea are estimated to be more than 15 trillion cubic feet. Approximately six trillion cubic feet of natural gas reserves are currently dedicated to a planned pipeline linking Papua New Guinea to Australia. Additionally, Syntroleum has had discussions with several gas reserve holders in Papua New Guinea regarding gas supplies to a GTL plant.
Syntroleum signed another MOU with PT ELNUSA, a subsidiary of the Indonesian state-owned company Pertamina. The MOU establishes a joint study to identify suitable existing gas reserves for development of a Syntroleum GTL facility.
"The memorandum of understandings we have signed with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Petroleum Sir Moi Avei, of Papua New Guinea, and with PT ELNUSA, show the increasing focus from governments and companies alike on GTL as a means to develop stranded gas reserves," said Jack Holmes, president and CEO of Syntroleum. "Our air-based technology is well suited for gas reserves in the two-to-five trillion cubic foot range which are the targets of the MOUs."
Additionally, Syntroleum licensee Ivanhoe Energy (Middle East) Inc. signed a MOU with Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS) to prepare a feasibility study to construct and operate a GTL plant using the Syntroleum® Process. Ivanhoe has announced that EGAS has agreed to commit up to 4.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, or about 600 million cubic feet per day for the anticipated 20-year operating life of the proposed project if the study validates the economics of the project. The results of the study could lead to the construction of a GTL plant using Syntroleum's technology. Ivanhoe Energy holds a master license for Syntroleum's GTL technology.
"Recent advances in Syntroleum's catalyst makes the potential for developing a GTL plant in Egypt more attractive," said Leon Daniel, Ivanhoe Energy's president and CEO. "We've been a long-time licensee of Syntroleum's industry-pioneering technology and are ready to move this project forward as quickly as possible."
Ivanhoe Energy and EGAS will enter into negotiations for a definitive agreement for the development of a project if the feasibility study indicates that a GTL plant is economically viable. The study will be performed in collaboration with Syntroleum's engineering staff.
Up 19% today.

Military Plans Tests in Search for an Alternative to Oil-Based Fuel
E-MailPrint Reprints Save
By THOM SHANKER
Published: May 14, 2006
WASHINGTON, May 13 — When an F-16 lights up its afterburners, it consumes nearly 28 gallons of fuel per minute. No wonder, then, that of all the fuel the United States government uses each year, the Air Force accounts for more than half. The Air Force may not be in any danger of suffering inconveniences from scarce or expensive fuel, but it has begun looking for a way to power its jets on something besides conventional fuel.
Multimedia
Graphic: Feeling the Pinch In a series of tests — first on engines mounted on blocks and then with B-52's in flight — the Air Force will try to prove that the American military can fly its aircraft by blending traditional crude-oil-based jet fuel with a synthetic liquid made first from natural gas and, eventually, from coal, which is plentiful and cheaper.
While the military has been a leader in adopting some technologies — light but strong metals, radar-evading stealth designs and fire-retardant flight suits, for example — any effort to hit a miles-per-gallon fuel efficiency rating has taken a back seat when the mission is to haul bombs farther and faster or push 70-ton tanks across a desert to topple an adversary. (The Abrams tank, for example, gets less than a mile per gallon under certain combat conditions.)
"Energy is a national security issue," said Michael A. Aimone, the Air Force assistant deputy chief of staff for logistics.
The United States is unlikely ever to become fully independent of foreign oil, Mr. Aimone said, but the intent of the Air Force project is "to develop enough independence to have assured domestic supplies for aviation purposes."
By late this summer, on the hard lake beds of the Mojave Desert, where the Air Force tests its most secret and high-performance aircraft, a lumbering B-52 is scheduled to take off in an experiment in which two of the giant bomber's engines will burn jet fuel produced not from crude oil but from natural gas. The plane's six other engines will burn traditional jet fuel — just in case.
The Air Force consumed 3.2 billion gallons of aviation fuel in fiscal year 2005, which was 52.5 percent of all fossil fuel used by the government, Pentagon statistics show. The total Air Force bill for jet fuel last year topped $4.7 billion.
Although the share of national energy consumption by the federal government and the military is just 1.7 percent, every increase of $10 per barrel of oil drives up Air Force fuel costs by $600 million per year.
Mr. Aimone said that if the synthetic blend worked, plans called for increasing its use in Air Force planes to 100 million gallons in the next two years.
Air Force and industry officials say that oil prices above $40 to $45 per barrel make a blend with synthetic fuels a cost-effective alternative to oil-based jet fuel.
Fuel costs have doubled since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, and crude oil prices since Hurricane Katrina have remained above $60 a barrel.
The Air Force effort falls under a directive from Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld to explore alternative fuel sources. Under the plan, the Air Force has been authorized to buy 100,000 gallons of synthetic fuel.
Ground experiments are scheduled to begin in coming weeks at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, followed by test flights at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
Although the Air Force is leading the project, it is working with the Automotive Tank Command of the Army, in Detroit, and the Naval Fuels Laboratory, at Patuxent River, Md.
The research and tests on synthetic fuel would ultimately produce a common fuel for the entire military, Air Force officials said.
The initial contract for unconventional fuel for the tests will be signed with Syntroleum Corporation of Tulsa, Okla., which has provided synthetic fuel for testing by the Departments of Energy, Transportation and Defense since 1998.
John B. Holmes Jr., Syntroleum's president and chief executive officer, said his firm would sell the Air Force its synthetic fuel for testing "at our cost, and we may be losing a little bit."
Neither Mr. Holmes nor the Air Force would provide cost estimates for the experimental fuel deal in advance of signing a final contract, expected in coming days.
Air Force officials have acknowledged, however, that the cost per gallon of the test fuel will be expensive.
Syntroleum can produce 42 gallons of synthetic fuel from 10,000 cubic feet of natural gas. The raw materials cost about $70.
If the military moves ahead with using the synthetic fuels, the Syntroleum technology could be used by factories elsewhere to produce the same 42 gallons of fuel from just $10 worth of coal, Mr. Holmes said.
"The United States is essentially the Saudi Arabia of coal," Mr. Holmes said. "It can be mined relatively inexpensively. We really believe that one of the things we can do to help our country's energy needs is to use the abundance of coal reserves."
Mr. Aimone said the large plants needed to produce nonconventional fuels did not exist and would have to be designed and built by the industry.
But he added: "We believe there are economic incentives as we invest in this, and invest with the industry at large, because there are vast coal reserves in this country. The economic pressures of rising oil prices can be moderated by the price of coal."
