Title: daytrader
Post by: rickjust on June 30, 2008, 06:36:47 PM
hi,
i have decided to start a daytrading log . i will post all my daytrades here at the end of the day .
i don't have many rules . my main one is to protect capital. the others are all the standard ones which we all use . i use very few chart patterns. my strategy is simple . volume and price and macro market sentiment is key. today i will post the 2 trades i made . one was a winner
the other was a winner but i wasn't quick enough to pull the trigger and i lost 6cents on it.
hope you find it helpful .
i hope i find it helpfull as well .
here goes :D
the first chart is ener . the market was strong in the pre market the opening had volume (given that it is a holiday week) and ener dropped onto the 20ma ( i use 20 and 50 ma on my intra charts)
my entry was 73.39 on the first candle not the second as stated on the chart exit was 74.88.
i try to get as close to the break out as i can for the entry. at that time of day it is moving so fast that a market order can lose 20 or 30 cents quickly.

the second day trade is LDK which started out well with one of my favorite 5 min patterns that works pretty much every time . first 5 mins it drops to the resistance . second 5 mins it reverses and then breaks out above the open . low risk entry is the second opening candle with a stop below the resitance line . i gave it another 5 minutes cause i was busy watching my ener trade . ldk broke out well but stalled at where i was think of selling  at the second resistance but my mind said let the profit run . but the market turned sour . i was about 25cents up when i decided to get out but by that time i had lost 6 cents .  i consider this a winning trade because my gut told me to get out because this pattern of breaking out as i described it  is usually very reliable on a bullish day in the market . to get out with a 6 cent loss when you look at the chart and see it lost  about $4 in value is a good trade for me . the rest of the day is history.
thanks
max

thanks ares,
daytrading is simple if you keep it simple . it is the perfect market for it and probably will be for a long time . this market is different to 20years ago when guys like me couldn't sit in front of a screen and trade freely with small comissions.  volitily is the traders friend.
just one trade today . i knew i would miss the bounce this afternoon but i had other stuff to do .
traded GG  today. waited for the market to get some direction this morning before doing anything. have been watching GG  but missed the bounce from support on the previous day. oh well can't catch them all.
classic breakout today from previous high with a nice based support .  broke from one resistance . target was 2nd resistance but decided to take the round number 49. as an exit. $1.09 profit.

hi,
2 trades this morning , both on APOL which is still running without me as i write.
first trade was the break of the first 5 minute candle to the upside but i wasn't quick enough on my fill and got 55.25 instead of 55 as i wanted .
got nervous and got out at 55.79 . got confident again in the reversal candle with lots of volume . got back in at 55.91, out at 57.18 . $1.78 on the day . good trades for me as i have to go to a rehearsal so i am done for the day .
enjoy ,
max
p.s. thanks aussie trader, i am moving back to oz later this year and i am yet to decide how i am going to trade the u.s. market . wether i just trade futures or keep my account here and continue to trade stocks which i prefer.

hi,
short day today and a "patriotic bounce " on a lot of stocks.
shorts covering may well go into the close but i am out of the market so they can do what they want .
My plan, last night, was to short FWLT today . but i completely forgot about it this morning . oh well. there is always another oportunity in the market.
2 trades today . one stupid one and one o.k. one.
NVDA . tried to catch a bounce but i didn't wait for confirmation and got in 12.99 below  the breakout of about 13.04 . the trading was fierce in it but no movement so i should have left it alone . lost 5cents. out at 12.94. traded AGU FOR .$1.36  profit with a .50cent trailing stop. which got hit. in at 96.57 ( about 30cents later than i wanted as usual) out at 97.93 hit my stop.
have a great long weekend

Title: on rules and the fun of trading
Post by: rickjust on July 06, 2008, 09:46:03 AM
OK, i am going to say it . trading should be fun and exciting , not boring .
there is the old dictum that you should be bored with trading and put your emotions aside and let every thought about it  be neutral with no joy or loss attached to it .
of course this is completely impossible as you can not have a neutral thought about anything . ( you are not having a neutral thought right now while reading this , some emotion is taking hold)
for example.
you plan the trade and trade the plan with your stop in place . all goes well , ( non neutral ) your stock is increasing in value , you have a trailing stop and it gets hit . you made 3 points on it and you are happy with the profits but the stock quickly reverses and goes up another 3 points and you kick yourself for not putting your stop lower or you are proud of your discipline of sticking with the plan or some such thing that you tell yourself before, during and after each trade. either way you are involved as an emotional human being . involved in the art of living , involved in the passion of life as it unfolds before you on the screen.
imagine a skydiver being bored or unattached to jumping from 10,000 feet after having done it 2000 times before.  when the thrill is gone it is time to hang it up ( or move on to B.A.S.E. jumping)
imagine a musician on stage with no passion for the performance, how would the audience react?
you are dealing with your money and the reason to trade is to make more of it but if you lose it ,even in the slightest amount , you will regret or feel some sort of loss.
trading is a unique art form. yes, i call it an art form because you are creating something from nothing . you are starting with a blank canvas ,i.e. the stock , and you are painting a picture of what you want that stock to look like .  your tools are, for some technical analysis , and for others fundamental analysis, or a combination of both. like any great art , you start with an idea and you let the muse and the inspiration of creative energy backed by a solid foundation of the study of your art take you to a place where you have created something beautiful . i.e. a trade you can show off to your friends. who hasn't made a great trade and looked at the chart as a thing of beauty. i no i have . or looked at the chart of a losing trade that i have held far too long like some drawing that i did that i rip up in frustration at my lack of skill.
so are we going to be just a bundle of emotions pulled one way and then the next as we watch our trades unfold . well that is individual ,  but the key for me in trading was to find out what kind of trader i am and stick with that . all the rules given by other famous traders will not help me if they are not my rules . if they are rules i read and said , "yes these are good rules but i can't seem to stick with them"  then i need to tweak them and make them my own. find out what works  .
for me , for example i like to lock in profits . you know the one , "you will never go broke taking your profits" that could mean a myriad of things to many people but for me it ties in with something i read in a vanity fair magazine while sitting in the dentist office. in an interview with a rich guy who sold only $5 potato peelers all his life , hawking them on the streets of London. his adage was " never underestimate a small amount of money." i liked that , it took hold, i had an emotional response to it .  i instantly knew this was for me . i didn't have to remember it . it just stuck to me .
rules are flexible and meant to be broken . each day is brand new so anything could happen . so when i tell myself "don't trade the dead zone " and an opportunity arises where an instinctual response to the movement of a particular stock  is so compelling that i must act , then this rule is broken.
But this is all just for me , each one is an individual and must find his own way of trading , this is key.
Don't let the world tell you who you are . look within , you know who you are and what you can or can't tolerate . above all enjoy what you do , be passionate about it . don't be bored by trading. ( i know you aren't)
do  what you love and nothing else.
thanks,
max

hi,
stocks like ENER  are good day trading stocks with lots of volitility and in that range above $50 per share can easily move in dollar incriments which if you are on the right side of the trade can be very rewarding .
that particular set up in the chart above is very common and often forms around the same time of day between 1.pm and 2pm. with the target above in this case 66.60 and daytraders all around the world watching the same thing the risk is very low of this W  pattern not working out . for me it is an instinct thing , as soon as i see it i can feel it is going to go . i learnt to trust this gut feeling which is faster than doing a whole bunch of calculations for me . i checked the fifteen minute chart and it was bullish as was the 5 min chart. check the futures and listen to where the order flow of the entire market is . at that time of day today you had a lot of shorts covering their positions and some buyers coming in as well so it was a safe place to trade long . CSIQ  was doing exactly the same thing at the same time but i can't generally watch more than one trade at a time.
if i was wrong then my mental stop was in place ready to get out.
thanks
max

HI,
correction on LDK entry 32.09 . both CSIQ  and LDK  and a lot of other stocks rallied at the usuall time today but i was out so i missed it . anyway saw LDK  bounce off the top of the W and knew it was  a goer ( as we say in australia) CSIQ  the same . hoping for some follow through in the a.m. won't be falling in love with these stocks though as the daily chart is fairly damaged for a bull move but we will see what the day brings
stop for LDK  below 31.30 . CSIQ stop around 32.

hi,
rough day for me as the market was seasawing around . all i needed to do was to stick to SWPR  and all would have been well . i traded in and out of it and still made money but i was untrusting of the market today and let some good profits go . when that happens i usually step back and watch . ( i also traded the lunch time dead zone which was a mistake ) but i still made money. that is key for me . make money in the market everyday . that is a daytraders job .  keep it simple .

hi,
i realize this is after the fact but there was a lovely entry on SPWR  on friday which i have noticed is a great place to enter stocks before a run higher . it often occurs around this time you see on the chart, 1pm to 130pm and coincides with a previous day's either low or support .
in this case it was support . other aspects of the chart were lining up as well . the MACD  crossover , the volume spike as buyers come in to support the stock . and the crossover of the day's pivot at 65.60, all make this a low risk trade . a tight stop could be in place here or a broader stop giving it more room to wiggle but either way this is the sort of set up that offers good possibilties . with the market already tired of dropping for a couple of days shorts cover and buyers nibble a little , daytraders go from short to long as the opportunity arises. as a day trader it pays to stick around the screen al day laying in wait for these trades . it is the sort of thing that you see, and instinctively jump on .
i had already called it quits for the day so missed this one but the beauty of the market is that it is not the last time this will occur . it will happen everyday that some good opportunity shows itself. all we have to do is be ready to dive in .
enjoy a lovely chart,
max

hi,
well i had a pretty good day which ended badly in CSIQ  . i had my initial target reached but then my mind lost discipline and i told myself this could go higher when it clearly was at a resistance point where i could have taken profits. it could have gone higher but as a daytrader i don't know that for sure, neither do i care . my job is to buy them at my desired entry and to sell them at or close to my target . what they do after that is none of my business.

HI,
scalping profits where i can today ,
SKF  , UYG ( QUICK SHORT)  SOLF,  take a look at the chart below , where the 200ema and the 20 ma flatten out after the drop . stock showed support at 15ish and made a small W   for a nice scalp trade to 15.46 resitance entry at 15.19

same with SPWR as the SOLF  chart above . After a big drop buy at 74 . or wait for comfirmation of the break of the W
with the stock crossing the 20ma heading for the 200.

hi,
interesting day today . chop chop nervous market. with GOOG  down big  after hours tomorrow should see more shorting .
hard to find a trend that i liked  today so mostly sidelined this afternoon with another quick scalp on LEH  and UYG but nothing to write home about .
where i enter the stock is the most important thing for me. it sets up where my risk to reward ratio will be , and i don't like to take on risk at all!!! . every trade should be a winner if well executed. ( easy said than done but quite possible as i am finding out ) or at least a 90% success rate.
i am always looking for the perfect entry but rarely find it exactly but i get close enough to keep on the right side of the money . trading is a simple task .i try not to over think it and not complicate my chart with a bunch of indicators .. just keep to the basic setups that  i like and i know work well for me.
i have just moved to the 20ma and the 200ma for my intra day charts . when i add something new to the chart i discard some thing else so for the 200ma the 50ma had to go. for some one like me who is totally visual the technicals work best . i am truly grateful to be able to do this everyday and i am happy to make money everyday,
sounds like a mantra ::)
glta

speaking of perfect entries . look at this chart of calm below where the 200 and 20 day collide in an already bullish chart. this is where i want to be.

hi,
my instinct was to short the SPY  on Thursday . i just felt that it was time for a short . one look at the chart and my gut reaction was to short around 128. i just knew the chances of it getting back to 129 were extremely slim. how did i know ? instinct . and i watched the chart . like watching a skateboard on a ramp go from one end to the other , each time losing more and more upward movement until finally it must roll back down .  Friday my gut told me to short the spy at the 126.20 pivot which it hit and reversed to close 80cents lower. i didnt take that one.
if you look at the daily chart you can see the reverse fib numbers showing a good short below the 76% mark which is also the drop below the close of the previous day. a good risk reward
with your stop above previous day close.
i didn't take the second trade and the first i didn't let run which is what i wanted to do .
instinct ,,,,,,,,,very important to trust it . you've looked at thousands of charts, you can almost immediately see an opportunity . like surfing , and waiting for  the sets to come in and paddling for the wave you know will take you. instinct in the market is the same . it is juicy and exciting . it all happens so quickly .  instinct will guide you through. you can see it , so now trade it . ( with your protective stop ;D)
this is how i want to trade . i am learning to trust that instinct that shows me the shot that i want to play . trust , trust ,trust .
here is the chart

here is some light reading from Don Juan Matus

from Don Juan Matus (who was Carlos Castenada's teacher):

There is one simple thing wrong with you — you think you have plenty of time. You think your life is going to last forever.

If you don't think your life is going to last forever, what are you waiting for? Why the hesitation to change? You don't have time for this display, you fool. This, whatever you're doing now, may be your last act on the Earth. It may very well be your last battle. If this were your last battle on the Earth, I would say that you are an idiot. You are wasting your last act on the Earth in some stupid mood! You have no time, my friend, no time! None of us have time! Don't just agree with me. Act upon it.

Happiness is to act with the full knowledge that there is no time; therefore, the acts have a peculiar power. Acts have power, especially when the person acting knows that those acts are his last battle.

There is a strange all-consuming happiness in acting with the full knowledge that whatever one is doing may very well be one's last act on the Earth. I recommend that you reconsider your life and bring your acts into that light. You don't have time, my friend! That is the misfortune of human beings. None of us have sufficient time. Your continuity just makes your a timid man. Your acts cannot possibly have the flair, the power, the compelling force of the acts performed by man who knows that he is fighting his last battle on the Earth. In other words, your continuity does not make you happy or powerful. Focus your attention on the link between you and your death, without remorse or sadness or worrying. Focus your attention on the fact you don't have time and let your acts flow accordingly. Let each of your acts be your last battle on the Earth! Only under those conditions will your acts have their rightful power. Otherwise, they will be, for as long as you live, the acts of a timid man.

... You have to learn how to make yourself accessible to Power.

It is best to erase all personal history, because this makes us free from the encumbering thoughts of other people.

... You take yourself too seriously. You are too damn important in your own mind. That must be changed! You're so damn important that you can afford to leave if things don't go your way. You think that shows you "have character". That's nonsense! You're weak and conceited!

Self-importance is another thing that must be dropped, just like personal history.

You think and talk too much. You must stop talking to yourself. In fact we maintain our world with our internal talk. Whenever we finish talking to ourselves the world is always as it should be. First of all, you must use your ears to take some of the burden from your eyes. We have been using our eyes to judge the world since the time we were born. We talk to others and to ourselves mainly about what we see. A warrior is aware of that and listens to the world. He listens to the sounds of the world. He is aware that the world will change as soon as he stops talking to himself and he must be prepared for that monumental jolt.

Personal power depends on impeccability. Impeccability consists in efforts to change, in order to scare the human form - and shake it away. After years of impeccability a moment will come when the form cannot stand it any longer and it leaves.

One can stalk his own weaknesses in the same way as a hunter stalks a prey. You figure out your routines until you know all the doing of your weaknesses.

When one has nothing to lose, one becomes courageous. We are timid only when there is something we can still cling to.

Self-importance is our greatest enemy.

Impeccability is nothing else but the proper use of energy. To understand this, you have to save enough energy yourself. Warriors take strategic inventories. They list everything they do. Then they decide which of those things can be changed in order to strengthen their energy. The strategic inventory covers only behavioral patterns that are not essential to our survival and well-being. Self-importance figures as the activity that consumes the greatest amount of energy. Actions of rechanneling that energy lead to impeccability.

You must push yourself beyond your limits, all the time.

a bit pissed with myself today. My instinct was to short the SPY  ( earlier posts)  and hold the SKF. Made 2 points on the SKF  But missed the SPY trade. when day trading with stocks there are so many possibilities that i have to really remember to just limit  myself to the ones i have instinct for . then let the chips fall where they may. let the others go .
The UAUA trade was a waste of time . profitable , yes, but it took my focus away from my main players . hhhmm . lesson learned? maybe.

Post by: rickjust on August 13, 2008, 09:01:52 PM
hi,
the entry price is the most important part of the trade. how much are you willing to pay ?
can you walk away when it is not at the price you want to pay or are you willing to pay up and give it plenty of wiggle room ? even if you are an investor you want to buy your stock at a premium price . because that would be the whole idea of trading and investing . pay as little as possible so there is room for price increase. i practice walking away from my screen when it is not where i want it but i get sorely tempted on many occasions and find myself buying when i don't feel the most comfortable . i like to buy breakouts as well as support . but breakouts scare me cause i have had so many fail on me that i find it difficult to not feel like i am on a rollercoaster . So , i use a little trick . after a breakout on a 5 min chart wait for it to come back in to close to the breaKout . i.e if the breakout is 117 and it goes to 118 it generally comes back in to the low 117's near the breakout so you get to decide again  :D .  this rarely fails . i've seen it so many times that i set my watch to it !
  see the example below
yeterday i had SKF  at 117 at the breakout sweet spot  but i turned down the trade a little wary . yet all my research told me this was a genuine breakout . i turned it down all the way to my target of 122 lol. today what looked like a break out at 180 on AAPL  failed . not quite ready yet . but everyone loves APPL  so next time it will break .( maybe)
my USO trade today was a good entry  waiting for the pullback to where it touched the 20ma on a bullish day for oil USO  was a no brainer so all i needed was a good entry . and i was patient . which is what i am trying to cultivate to a higher degree.
the hit of the 20ma was the sweet spot at 92.09 and my finger was on the trigger but i waited for a little more confirmation but really the only confirmation i needed was the touch of that 20ma on a bullish day for the stock . that , for me is where i find the best trade that produces the best profit . the pullback to a support , and of course the W move which is profitable 100%of the time, because 1000;s of traders are waiting for the same thing. take a look at the chart for AMZN  below
thanks

Nice find Rick. Just wondering since it doesn't appear too likely to close the gap today, will you hold overnight?

hi,
decided to hold over night now that it has come down so far from the high ;)
i don't like holding because the market is so volitile and seeing as it is now below 5.40 but i will give it a couple of days with a stop below $4.00 . this all may change as we go along. i like to stay flexible .
thanks
maxi

hi,
well my market sell off prediction was not correct and the solars follwed through after all . sold my sol in the 19.20's . not so hot . but i was thinking it would break 20 this morning . bought some stp made a point and a half but left plenty on the table . holding CROX lol.
oh , tried to short the spy at 127.41 covered at 126 .91 when it looked like a possible double bottom W  bullish formation , but my mind set was short so i didn't turn around and go long .
also i was under my daughters car all day fixing the exaust , fun.

hi,
i am back . i have been busy setting myself up with futures account . just trading es and nq's
now. found it much better and more profitable just watching the 2 charts . i will start to post my futures trades here . still using the same techniques.
still holding my crox, (ho hum). but i read today that someone is sueing them because their kids foot got caught in a escalator and crox ave no safety features in the shoe. people will sue over the stupidest things. insanity rules .
