ANN ARBOR, Mich., Jan 08, 2009 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Ask just about anyone what their favorite Motown hit is and most will have a hard time picking just one. From "My Girl" by the Temptations to Marvin Gaye's haunting "What's Going On," Motown songs - and the talented artists and musicians who produced them - have touched the hearts of music fans worldwide over the last 50 years. Beginning this month and throughout the entire year, Borders will celebrate Motown's 50th anniversary with a prominent in-store display of Motown music selections along with related items, such as anniversary T-shirts. In addition, the retailer is devoting a special page on Borders.com dedicated to Motown's anniversary, and will host both past and present Motown artists including Boyz II Men, Martha Reeves of Martha Reeves and the Vandellas and Duke Fakir of The Four Tops for in-store appearances and signings in Los Angeles and Detroit.

Borders invites Motown fans to attend free in-store events in Los Angeles and in the Detroit area, which will give customers the opportunity to come together to celebrate their passion for the music that helped shape our popular culture. Boyz II Men, who were recently nominated for a 2009 Grammy Award for their Decca debut album "Motown: A Journey through Hitsville USA," will sign CDs and answer questions at the Westwood Borders store in Los Angeles Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. In addition, Duke Fakir of The Four Tops and Martha Reeves of Martha Reeves and the Vandellas will greet fans, answer questions and sign CDs at the Borders store in Dearborn Jan. 16 at 7 p.m.

Beginning today, customers can visit Borders' special Motown Web page at www.borders.com/motown where they can read about their favorite Motown artists, view vintage photos in the Motown image gallery and purchase CDs online. Throughout the year, Borders will also prominently display in its stores nationwide a large selection of Motown CDs from artists such as Stevie Wonder and Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, including the anticipated "NOW That's What I Call Motown," a 50th anniversary compilation of 25 Motown classics, available in stores and online beginning Jan. 13. When customers visit their local Borders store to stock up on their favorite music titles, they can also purchase an exclusive Motown 50th anniversary Borders gift card for the music fan in their lives - a great keepsake to mark the label's historic 50th anniversary. Select Borders stores are also offering Motown- themed T-shirts in two designs for men and women. Further, with any purchase of a Motown item, customers will receive (while supplies last) a complimentary 17-inch-by-27.5-inch poster featuring a colorful display of vintage images of various Motown artists.

"We feel a special connection to Motown because our company was founded and remains headquartered in Ann Arbor, just miles from Motown's Detroit birthplace. We have a tremendous affinity for the artists that this legendary label has produced over the past five decades," said Anne Kubek, executive vice president of Merchandising and Marketing for Borders Group.

LOS ANGELES, Jan 09, 2009 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ --
Who:      They were discovered by Michael Bivins of New Edition, nurtured
by Motown in the early 1990s and became the biggest-selling
group in the company's history. Boyz II Men -- Nathan Morris,
Wanya Morris, Shawn Stockman and Michael McCary -- smartly
combined contemporary beats with classic smooth harmony, reeling
off the huge hits  "Motownphilly," "It's So Hard To Say Goodbye
To Yesterday" (the only a cappella No. 1 hit in pop music
history) and "End Of The Road" (from the feature film
"Boomerang") in the first year alone. "End Of The Road" is one
of three group No. 1 hits -- "I'll Make Love To You" and "One
Sweet Day" with Mariah Carey are the other two -- that set and
broke records for longevity at No. 1. They also tied the
Beatles' record for replacing themselves at the top of the
charts. Among their other hits: "Water Runs Dry," "On Bended
Knee," "4 Seasons of Loneliness," "A Song For Mama," "Can't Let
Her Go" and more. Boyz II Men honored their roots with "Motown:
A Journey Through Hitsville U.S.A.," an album of Motown covers
for which they have been nominated for a 2009 Grammy Award.
What:     Grammy nominated Boyz II Men will greet fans and sign "Motown: A
Journey Through Hitsville U.S.A.," as well as their other CDs at
              Borders in Westwood.
During the event, fans will be treated to a special Q&A where
they will be able to ask Boyz II Men about their Motown roots,
what inspired them to do an album of Motown covers, what music
inspires them and more! The Q&A will be hosted by LA radio
personality Victor Zaragoza from radio station Hot 92.3.
Why:      Borders is celebrating Motown's 50th anniversary with a free
in-store event featuring Boyz II Men. Now fans have the
opportunity to celebrate their passion for Motown music by
meeting this successful R&B group and having their favorite Boyz
II Men CDs signed by the artists themselves!

Jackson music, videos quickly sell out after death
Jackson-related music, videos, books skyrocket in sales, sell out after pop star's death
By Rachel Metz, AP Technology Writer
On Friday June 26, 2009, 5:46 pm EDT

NEW YORK (AP) -- Michael Jackson's death has led to skyrocketing sales of his music and videos, with major retailers selling out of products that have regained immense popularity overnight.

Bill Carr, Amazon.com Inc.'s vice president for music and video, said Friday that once the world learned that the pop icon had died Thursday, the Web site sold out within minutes all CDs by Michael Jackson and by the Jackson 5 -- the group Jackson and his four older brothers formed out of Gary, Ind., in the late '60s.

Jackson's albums accounted for all 10 of Amazon's "Bestsellers in Music" list Friday, with the 25th anniversary edition of the celebrated "Thriller" album taking the top spot.

Barnes and Noble Inc.'s Web site and retail stores also sold out most Jackson CDs, DVDs and books, and its 10 bestselling CDs were Jackson titles as well. Borders Group Inc.'s Web site sold out almost everything related to the star; albums also sold out at some of the book seller's retail locations, including its New York stores.

"We saw something similar when (Luciano) Pavarotti and (Frank) Sinatra passed, but from the initial read on this it seems to be a faster rush," Borders spokeswoman Mary Davis said. "People seem to be shocked by the news and want to go out and rediscover his music."

At a Borders in midtown Manhattan, Chris Barnes, 37, came in during his lunch break Friday and was disappointed he couldn't get a compilation of the star's number-one videos -- something he had seen on the shelf just a few days earlier.

"He was an icon. I grew up on 'Off The Wall' and all that," Barnes said, listening to Jackson's "Rock With You" on his iPod as he spoke.

Apple Inc. would not describe the level of demand for Jackson's music at its online iTunes Store, but his dominance of iTunes' top-seller lists Friday speaks for itself.

Before word of Jackson's hospitalization, none of his albums were in iTunes' list of top sellers. After the news broke, "Thriller" quickly cracked the iTunes top 100; within hours, it reached No. 1. By Friday afternoon, nine of the top 10 albums were Jackson's. "The Essential Michael Jackson" song collection was the top-selling album, followed by "Thriller."

Five of Jackson's singles made it to iTunes' list of most-purchased tracks -- "Man in the Mirror," "Thriller," "The Way You Make Me Feel," "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," and "Smooth Criminal" -- in what may be one of the best barometers to gauge his most popular songs.

Borders, Barnes and Noble and Amazon all were working on restocking their stores.

Sixty percent of Amazon's CD orders Thursday were for Michael Jackson music, something Carr called "stunning." He said he'd "never seen anything like this" before at Amazon after the death of a pop culture icon.

With Amazon sold out of Jackson CDs, Carr said many customers were buying Jackson's music in digital form. Sales of Jackson-related videos are also up on Amazon -- Carr said most DVDs, including the 1978 movie musical "The Wiz," are currently out of stock.

Carr said it was difficult to say whether the increased sales would persist, saying Amazon for now was taking things "minute by minute" and reacting to customers' orders.

"They love him, he's a legend, and they're anxious to make sure they have his music in their collections," he said.

Demand for Jackson-related products also shot up abroad.

The Web site for Britain's largest music seller, HMV Group, saw an unprecedented amount of downloads of Jackson's music after his death.

At HMV stores, sales rose about 20-fold, though they had stocked up on albums in advance of concerts that were to begin next month, HMV spokesman Gennaro Castaldo said. Jackson, 50, had been prepping for a 50-show engagement at London's O2 Arena.

ANN ARBOR, Mich., March 3, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Having recently delivered to needy children across the nation more than 900,000 new books collected during its winter book drive, Borders has launched its company wide, community-based spring book drive that will last through April 6. Staff at more than 700 Borders(R) and Waldenbooks(R) stores nationwide are encouraging customers to open their hearts and give the gift of new books to children within their communities. Customers can also donate Borders' own Easter-themed "Pickles the Bunny," an adorable grey and white plush toy rabbit. All books and bunnies will be directly donated to non-profit organizations chosen by each store.

"Borders customers have shown tremendous generosity even when many are tightening their belts during these difficult economic times," said Larry Norton, Senior Vice President of Merchandising-Adult Trade, Children's and Bargain. "We had an outstanding winter book drive in which we teamed with customers and hundreds of charities nationwide to collect more than 900,000 books for children. That outpouring of generosity is a huge testament to our and our customers' desire to promote literacy in local communities. We are excited about our spring book drive and hope to once again deliver a generous number of books to children in need across the nation."

A number of non-profit organizations have directly benefited from Borders' book drives over the years including UC Davis Children's Hospital, Ronald McDonald House Charities, Rock for Reading, Starlight Children's Foundation, the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Reach Out and Read Michigan, Boys Town, Shriners Hospital for Children, Wednesday's Child and many others.

"Words cannot begin to express our enormous gratitude and sincere appreciation to Borders and your amazing customers," said Pat Lockerd of Wednesday's Child, a north Texas non-profit that partnered with an area Borders store on its winter book drive. "The gift of a book to a child is a gift of hope and dreams. While every child deserves a new book to call his or her own, a new book for a child in foster care is invaluable. It improves reading skills, is a source of ownership and pride, and most importantly, it provides a chance to escape into their imagination and dream of good things to come. Your customers provided a perfect blend of books for all ages -- from the very youngest to our teens!"

Whether searching for a beloved classic from their childhood or discovering a new author or illustrator, customers will enjoy browsing Borders and Waldenbooks stores' selection of thousands of titles. The retailer expects some of the most popular books donated to include "Where the Wild Things Are," "Ramona the Pest," "Fancy Nancy: Pajama Day," "The Poky Little Puppy" and "Magic Tree House" titles. Customers can choose to donate these titles or they can donate their favorite age-appropriate children's book.

Customers may contact their local Borders or Waldenbooks store to learn more about the spring book drive. To find a store, go to the store locator tab on Borders.com.

Borders Bounces Back.......

Shares of Borders Group (BGP) shot up 47% Thursday to $2.54. Is this the start of a revival for Borders shares or just a dead cat bounce? Let's take a closer look at the country's 2nd largest bookstore chain.

The Good News

1. Borders shares rose after the company reported that it was able to repay a $42.5 million dollar note from Pershing Square Capital. Borders also announced a positive earnings report for the 4th quarter. Earnings per share was nearly double 2009 at 91 cents. The firm's net profit rose to $60 million dollars. Borders produced a better 4th quarter earnings report than most Wall Street analysts were expecting.

2. Borders gained $700 million in debt financing, pushing the retailer's debt maturities back to 2014. This should give Borders some breathing room considering that the original debt was due to mature in 2011.

3. Borders is partnering with Kobo to release an e-reader. Borders is counting on the e-reader to make the firm competitive with the Nook and Kindle. The Kobo e-reader only costs $149 which makes it cheaper than most e-readers.

The Bad News

1. Borders had sales of $946.5 million which is a drop from last year's $1 billion dollar sales figure. Borders profit increase did not come from earnings growth but from cost cutting (store closings, employee layoffs). Borders' biggest problem is that the firm has no organic growth. The same store sales numbers were dreadful. Same store sales (comps) declined 14%, which is nearly 3 times the rate at Barnes & Noble (BKS). While the company is doing everything that it can to survive, Borders can only cut costs so much. The forecast for earnings growth for the next 5 years is projected to be 0.2%.

2. Borders should have entered the digital content arena when the Nook and Kindle launched. With the iPad set to launch Friday, Borders' e-reader may be too little too late.

3. Borders' business model is near extinction. According to Marketwatch, Amazon (AMZN) and Wal-mart (WMT) are taking market share from traditional bookstore chains with their discounted pricing model. Barnes & Noble, the number 1 book retailer in the U.S., is fighting to stay afloat in the bookstore industry. Now you have Apple (AAPL) entering the fray with its tablet PC. While there will always be a need for bookstores, the retail book market does not appear to be large enough for both Borders and Barnes & Noble.

think that Borders deserves credit for the changes that the company has made and I believe that these changes will benefit Borders over the short term. However, none of these fixes addresses the long term problems. Borders stock might be a decent trade for the speculative investor but I wouldn't consider buying shares for anything more than speculation.

April 9, 2010, 10:37 AM ET.Borders Jumps 7% as GE Gets Behind $700M Loan

Shares of Borders Group (BGP) are up 19 cents, or 7.4%, at $2.91 this morning after the company announced General Electric's (GE) GE Capital will be co-collateral agent for a $700 million asset-backed facility for the company.

The news is an update on Borders's March 31 announcement it replaced a $700 million revolving line of credit coming due next year with a senior secured asset-based credit facility not due until 2014. GE was mentioned at the time as a joint arranger and book runner, along with Bank of America (BAC) and Wells Fargo (WFC).

Presumably, the role of GE as co-collateral agent gives that much more soundness to the package.

The Customer Commitment -- the first of its kind for a national bookseller -- includes the "Low Price Promise," a new in-store program promising to match a local competitor's advertised, in-store price on items that Borders has in-stock. The Commitment also includes the popular "In-Stock Promise," which assures consumers if they don't find an item in stock at a Borders store, and it's among the more than one million titles available on Borders.com, Borders will find it and pay the shipping costs to the customer's home. With each of these promises, customers can enjoy a one-stop shopping experience at their local Borders store.

Borders continues to focus on creating an exceptional in-store customer experience driven by consumer research into what consumers want from a bookseller. Not surprisingly, value, price and convenience continue to be top of mind for consumers. Borders translated the research into action and made changes such as eliminating the need for printed coupons and offering consumers the new Borders Rewards Plus program. The new programs have surpassed expectations and led to the customer service index being rated at more than 90 percent with both availability and knowledge of associates being above a 95 percent rating. The Customer Commitment promises to push these customer ratings even higher.

"We're thrilled to offer our customers the new Customer Commitment program this holiday season," said Mike Edwards, CEO of Borders, Inc. "We're the first and only major bookseller to introduce a program like this that truly puts all consumers' needs first. In a competitive environment, the differentiators for consumers are value offerings combined with an exceptional in-store experience. Our customers have no reason to shop anywhere else."

Consumers can take advantage of Borders' Low Price Promise by bringing in a current printed advertisement by a local brick and mortar competitor and Borders will match the advertised price on in-stock items. Consumers can also display a local competitor's lower advertised price on an in-store item via their mobile phone. The retailer will also price match items previously purchased from Borders within the company's standard 30-day return and exchange window.

Borders' Low Price Promise and Borders' In-Stock Promise may not be combined and are subject to other restrictions and limitations. The Low Price Promise is not applicable to Internet pricing. See www.borders.com/online/store/MediaView_bcc for complete details on the Customer Commitment.
