Jazz Pharma rockets ahead of data release...
BOSTON (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Jazz Pharmaceuticals rocketed over 209% on Wednesday ahead of the scheduled release of Phase III clinical data for its fibromyalgia treatment candidate sodium oxybate, or JZP-6. Jazz plans to present various data on June 10, 11 and 12 at two scientific meetings. Jazz added it hopes to file for U.S. approval of the product by the end of 2009. Shares of the biotech group were up 163% at $2.68 in midday trading. Sodium oxybate is already approved in the U.S. for the treatment of various sleep disorders.

Busted through the 200-day MA on a  Runaway Gap Up.
Runaway gaps are also called measuring gaps, and are best described as gaps that are caused by increased interest in the stock. For runaway gaps to the upside, it usually represents traders who did not get in during the initial move of the up trend and while waiting for a retracement in price, decided it was not going to happen. Increased buying interest happens all of a sudden, and the price gaps above the previous day's close. This type of runaway gap represents an almost panic state in traders. Also, a good uptrend can have runaway gaps caused by significant news events that cause new interest in the stock. In the chart below, note the significant increase in volume during and after the runaway gap.

Runaway gaps can also happen in downtrends. This usually represents increased liquidation of that stock by traders and buyers who are standing on the sidelines. These can become very serious as those who are holding onto the stock will eventually panic and sell – but sell to whom? The price has to continue to drop and gap down to find buyers. Not a good situation.

The term measuring gap is also used for runaway gaps. This is an interpretation that is hard to find examples for, but it is a way of helping one decide how much longer a trend will last. The theory is that the measuring gap will occur in the middle, or half way, through the move.

Sometimes, the futures market will have runaway gaps that are caused by trading limits imposed by the exchanges. Getting caught on the wrong side of the trend when you have these limit moves in futures can be horrifying. The good news is that you can also be on the right side of them. These are not common occurrences in the futures market despite all the wrong information being touted by those who do not understand it, and are only repeating something they read from an uninformed reporter.

Jazz Pharma rockets on 3Q results, higher outlook
Jazz Pharma stock ends strong week by setting 9-year high after posting 3rd quarter results

On Friday November 5, 2010, 1:34 pm EDT
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Jazz Pharmaceuticals Inc. rose to a nine-year high Friday, capping a weeklong rally after the company reported strong third-quarter results and raised its annual forecasts.

Jazz said its sales improved after it raised the price of its narcolepsy drug Xyrem, which is expected to boost its sales for the rest of the year. Its shares advanced to their highest prices since early 2001.

The Palo Alto, Calif., company reported a profit of $13.2 million, or 32 cents per share, in the third quarter. A year ago the company lost $1.7 million, or 5 cents per share, during the same period. Excluding one-time costs Jazz said its profit totaled 41 cents per share. Revenue rose 45 percent, to $44.8 million from $30.8 million.

Analysts expected a profit of 34 cents per share and revenue of $42.6 million on average, according to Thomson Reuters. Analyst estimates usually leave out one-time items. Shares of Jazz rose $1.75, or 14.1 percent, to $14.15 in afternoon trading.

Jazz markets Xyrem for daytime sleepiness in patients who have narcolepsy, and also for cataplexy, a condition associated with narcolepsy that causes sudden and brief losses of muscle control. Its other approved drug, Luvox CR, is a treatment for obsessive compulsive disorder and social anxiety disorder. The company said Xyrem revenue grew 49 percent to $37.2 million, mostly because of the increased price. Luvox sales rose to $6.6 million from $5 million. Jazz also reported $915,000 in revenue from royalties and contracts.

The company raised its profit and revenue forecasts because it expects more revenue from Xyrem, along with slightly lower research and development costs. Jazz is now forecasting a profit of $1.45 to $1.50 per share excluding one-time costs, up from $1.05 to $1.15 per share. It now expects sales of $164 million to $168 million in sales this year, compared with an earlier estimate of $156 million to $162 million.

Analysts were expecting a profit of $1.15 per share and $161.7 million in revenue.

Jazz is now projecting $140 million to $142 million from Xyrem rather than $132 million to $136 million. It still expects $24 million to $26 million in Luvox revenue.

Shares of Jazz Pharmaceuticals slumped in August after a Food and Drug Administration panel recommended against granting a new approval to Xyrem. Jazz wants to market the drug as a treatment for fibromyalgia, but the panel -- and later, the FDA itself -- said the drug's abuse risks were too great. The stock fell 22 percent the day after the panel made its recommendation.

Over the last four days, however, Jazz shares are up 16.7 percent. On Friday the stock set a high of $14.28.

Jazz Pharma rally continues...  8)

Jazz Pharmaceuticals Inc. stock is up more than 30 percent this week, posting another double-digit gain on Friday after a strong earnings report the day before.

Palo Alto-based Jazz (NASDAQ:JAZZ) on Thursday reported third-quarter net income of $13.2 million, or 32 cents a share, compared to a loss in the same period last year of $1.7 million, or 5 cents a share.

Total revenue was $44.8 million, up 45 percent compared to the year-ago quarter.

The company also boosted its 2010 sales forecast to between $164 million and $168 million. It said earnings per share should be between 70 cents and 75 cents, with adjusted earnings between $1.45 and $1.50.

The boost is attributed to increased sales of the drug Xyrem, whose net sales in Q3 were $37.2 million, compared to $25 million for the third quarter of 2009.

Once-daily Luvox CR sales were also up 33 percent, bringing in $6.6 million in revenue.

Jazz closed the day Friday at $14.28, up from last Friday's closing price of $10.63.

Jazz Pharmaceuticals: When Is FDA Rejection a Good Thing?
December 20, 2010

By Alexander Moschina

It wasn't exactly the way that California-based Jazz Pharmaceuticals (Nasdaq: JAZZ) wanted to start the week.

On Monday, October 11, word came through from the Food & Drug Administration that it had rejected the company's fibromyalgia treatment called JZP-6.

The reason? Turns out it contains sodium oxybate – an active ingredient in GHB, also known as "the date rape drug."

But then a funny thing happened. Rather than Jazz shares getting clobbered (as you'd ordinarily expect after such news), the stock began to climb. From a closing price of $10.51 on October 11, the stock now sits at $19.08 (as of December 20) – a remarkable 81% gain, which included a 52-week high of $19.41 on December 17.

In addition, Jazz's third quarter earnings results led the company to raise its full-year profit forecast by 38% to $1.45 – $1.50 per share.

Year-to-date, Jazz shares are up a whopping 142%. And going into 2011, this drug manufacturer shows no sign of slowing down...

Two Drugs... A 79% Combined Sales Jump – And Just a Taste of Things to Come...

Breaking down Jazz's third quarter results, the company notched up total revenue of $44.8 million – a 45% jump over the $30.8 million during Q3 2009. The increase came as it saw a significant sales rise for two of its major drugs...

•Luvox: The anti-depressant, used to treat Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, brought in $6.6 million for the quarter. Year-over-year, sales of the drug have increased more than 30%.
•Xyrem: This drug is taken to prevent cataplexy attacks (episodes of muscle weakness) in patients with narcolepsy. It raked in $37.2 million for the quarter – a 49% increase over 3Q 2009. But this treatment will soon yield even bigger profits...
Jazz Shares Are Flying... With Rising Sales and Prices Set to Fire Shares in 2011

Any day now, Jazz will raise the price of Xyrem by as much as 22%. And considering that the drug makes up more than three-quarters of the company's total revenue, the hike is guaranteed to send 2011 profits soaring.

According to Jazz co-founder and President Robert Myers, "We could more than double that current price and still be below [the price] ceiling."

And as prices go up, research and development costs are plummeting, making way for huge profit margins. During the third quarter of 2009, R&D expenses totaled $7.6 million, but in the same period this year, they fell to $7.3 million. Overall, costs have dropped by more than 40% this year.

So even though the FDA rejected Jazz's fibromyalgia treatment, that's not enough to squash this up-and-coming biotech. Unlike other one-trick companies, Jazz already boasts two major products with sales rising. Plus, it's now cheaper for the company to develop the items in its pipeline.

In a recent conference call, CEO Bruce Cozadd described 2010 as a "pivotal" year for the company. And thanks to the strong momentum Jazz has built, 2011 is shaping up to be even bigger.

Jazz Hits High Note...

On the upside, Jazz Pharmaceuticals (JAZZ) jumped 4% in fast trade, clearing a 24.07 buy point from a square-box base. The 2007 IPO, featured in a New America article on Jan. 20, gets the lion's share of its revenue from Xyrem, a drug that treats narcolepsy. Jazz posted a string of quarterly losses through early 2009, but turned profitable in the second half of that year. EPS surged 583% in the latest quarter.

Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (JAZZ)...
recently spiked to a new multi-year high on the company's third consecutive earnings surprise. With estimates on the rise and a bullish growth projection, stock sings in the key of momentum.

Jazz specializes in developing products for neurology and psychiatry primarily in the United States. The company was founded in 2003 and has a market cap of $1.12 billion.

Although JAZZ has been trending higher since early November, shares got an extra boost on March 7 after the company reported strong Q4 results that came in ahead of expectations.

Fourth-Quarter Results

Revenue for the period was up 39% from last year to $53.4 million. Earnings also looked good, coming in at 56 cents, 4% ahead of the Zacks Consensus Estimate, where the company has an average earnings surprise of 12% over the last three quarters.

The strong performance was led by the company's Xyrem, a narcolepsy and sleeping disorder drug, with sales up 36% from last year to $43 million. Full-year sales for Xyrem were up 47% from last year. Sales for its other leading product, Luvox, increased to $9.4 million from $5.7 million.

Financial Profile

With 2010 marking Jazz's first full year of profitability, the company's financial profile has been on the upswing. Cash and equivalents are up $16 million from last year to $45 million while total debt fell $76 million to $48 million.

Estimates

We saw some very bullish movement in estimates off the good quarter, with the current year adding 52 cents to $2.57 while the next-year estimate jumped $1.04 to $3.35, a bullish 30% growth projection.

Valuation

But in spite of the gains, the valuation picture still looks great, with a PEG ratio )PE/Growth) of .36%, well below the benchmark for value of 1.

12-Month Chart

On the chart, shares got a boost off the good quarter to hit a new multi-year high at $29.73. Take a look at the chart below.
