Hi Vol today
Maybe setting up for a good day.....
Now, can someone give me a site where I can keep track of earning due out please?
TIA!!
JDSU is in a strong uptrend on increased volume. Price action could be creating a saucer bottom just like CTLM that i posted the other day. Its late so im not gonna go into detail, But heres the profile and charts. They're sexy! ;)
Company Profile:
JDS Uniphase Corporation. The Group's principal activities are to design, develop, manufacture and distribute fiber optic components, modules and subsystems for the fiber optic communications industry. These products are deployed in advanced optical communications networks for the telecommunication and cable television industries. Price action retested the ascending trendline today on increasing vol. I think tommorrow morning would be a great entry point though im fully invested so im sittin this one out but think its a great potential buy for anyone interested.
Good luck.

Volume, Price action, me happy ;D

More Volume! More Price action! More Money!

The company is doing a reverse split and Cramer has been pumping it on his show. He thinks it is a best of breed, likes the CEO, Kevin Kennedy, and feels that with the share price higher, it will attract mutual funds.
They just made a purchase of Acterna.
Historically, most companies do not benefit by reverse splits. But what do I know.
I believe we're at the final stages of the bull market that started on March 2003 and took the S&P 500 from a low of 780 to 1247 points. I don't know if it will take days or weeks or even months but there are several signs that a long term bear market could unfold again.
I've seen (or at least studied) many bull and bear markets since stock market history began and they all have pretty much the same behaviour when they come to an end. At the final stages of a bull market investors pick up the forgotten stocks, those that were left in the ground as others rose immensely.
Those stocks deserve their place in the sun too, but there's not much time now. So they will rise fast before everything falls appart and the general market starts trending down.
I'm not particularly interested on the specifics of each stock, since they are acting as a group and will continue to do so, based almost exclusively on mass behaviour.
You see, now everything's gone up, the energy bubble is now completely unfolding and getting to an end too, so big and small speculators as a mob will jump on these liquid and low priced stocks. I see 20 to 100% upside potential in each one of them in a few weeks time.
JDSU fully qualifies, it is one of those abandoned angels. I will buy JDSU for the 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio at today's open.

JDSU Fans Gobble Up Split

So far, so good for JDSU's (JDSU:Nasdaq - news - research - Cramer's Take) split decision.
Investors cheered the fallen bubble-era favorite for the first time in a long while last week. The San Jose, Calif., optical networking company is asking shareholders to approve a reverse stock split that would boost the share price by reducing shares outstanding.
The company cited the need to attract institutional investors, many of whom are prohibited from buying stocks that trade for just a dollar or two. JDSU shares jumped 17% over five days, clearing $2 for the first time in six months.
But the recent run-up aside, investors boarding the JDSU bandwagon could be in for a bumpy ride. A look at recent reverse splits in tech and telecom shows that few companies flourish after the move. Of 11 stocks tracked by TheStreet.com, only four have gained since the reverse split took effect.
Of course, companies that do reverse splits tend to be in a tough spot, and JDSU is no exception. The stock fetched as much as $124 in the summer of 2000, at the tail end of the Internet building boom. But then customer orders went into a deep freeze and the company, then known as JDS Uniphase, endured a $50 billion write-off of acquisition overpayments as well as numerous rounds of layoffs. Its shares swiftly plunged into the single digits, where they have been stuck for more than four years.
Beyond its tattered business, the root of the JDSU mess lies in the stock-swap acquisition binge that first vaulted the company into the spotlight. In that regard, JDSU isn't alone. Lots of huge telecom and networking supply outfits, ranging from giant Cisco (CSCO:Nasdaq - news - research - Cramer's Take) on down to tiny Ariba (ARBA:Nasdaq - news - research - Cramer's Take), printed mountains of new stock during the Internet boom. The companies used the shares as currency to pay employees and for acquisitions. Since then, though, the market for tech stocks has tanked, and many onetime highfliers find themselves sitting on mounds of stagnant stock.
Thanks for the interesting info Se7en :) I believe the key sentence is:
«Investors cheered the fallen bubble-era favorite for the first time in a long while last week.»
They're acting as a group, a group that is moving to the upside on above average volume.
Spectacular action from JDSU, with relative strength against the general market as I expected. The stock broke a bullish flag formation on the upside and is continuing its bullish campaign.
My short term price target for this small priced stock is $2.94.
Well im glad someone acknowledged this pick pick besides me. Turns out it was the man him self. :o
JDSU was up a lot, then down a lot, just to close almost unchanged on the day. Volume was extremely high.
I describe this action as profit taking which was met by strong buying. No resistance was met yet, resistance only comes at $2.94 and the short term trend is still bullish.
I'll continue holding JDSU whatever happens today.
Is JDSU really garbage? I don't know, but I'm starting to get suspicious about my ability on this 4 stocks group trade (CMGI, JDSU, SUNW and ATML). Pressure is high to take some small profits, because I've been having some small losses too and I would like to have my profit/loss ratio at 50% or higher.
Maybe the stock will trade down to the ascending support level, which for tomorrow will come at $1.99. But it can also trade higher and run for the $2.94 resistance level.
So, what to do?
I'll sell the stock at tomorrow's open, hopefully taking out a small gain and try to buy it back everyday at the ascending trendline (tomorrow at $1.99, rising approximately $0.02 per trading day).

Hi David,
Saw the stock is still on the portfolio ??? is that right. If so what made you change your plan?
Amarens
The idea is not to trade out altogether, but to exchange currently-held shares for cheaper ones, assuming it descends to support levels.
QuoteHi David,
Saw the stock is still on the portfolio Huh is that right. If so what made you change your plan?

I didn't change my plan (I never do that unless I previously say so), I've sold JDSU at $2.22 according to plan:
QuoteSo, what to do?

But, since I've received some personal messages from subscribers complaining about the information on the «3 Stocks on Fire (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/3stocksonfire.php)» link I've decided to wait at least 24 hours before I change things on the Portfolio.
Since I send the e-mail with specific instructions I don't think that's a problem, what do you think? Any suggestions?
Concerning JDSU, I'll be looking to buy it back at $2.01 today, that's where support provided by the ascending trendline is.

Didn't think you changed your plan. Just used to the fact that if it is sold it's on the sell list the next day. I love the specific email instructions, saves a lot of time :).
I did not sell. My present broker doesn't allow stop loss and I had no time to watch on Friday :-\. I'm changing brokers. I'm also not uncomfortable yet still holding.
Good trading!

Like I said:
QuoteConcerning JDSU, I'll be looking to buy it back at $2.01 today, that's where support provided by the ascending trendline is.
When I sold JDSU, I'm buying it back at today's open, since it hit support. Also, I think the general market will rebound after a sell off in the first hour of trading (read my SPY analysis (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?topic=3111.msg25975#msg25975)) and JDSU is a good play for a general market bullish move at this point.
I will buy JDSU at today's open for the 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio, after I sold it at $2.22 last Friday.
Tech is in bear market, JDSU is one of the biggest tech companies.
So, JDSU will not immune the down trend.
No reason to buy it right now. Wait until the trend turns bullish.
My opinion.
After 7 sessions of big down, both NASDAQ index and SOX index are in oversold.
I think that the down trend will stop for the next few days, oversold stocks will have small bounce back. 5% bounce back is quite big for me.
So, I will do day trading for the next few days (long not short).
This wasn't a wise call. I bought JDSU on support but the stock broke that support without a doubt. What to do now? Hold the stock and persist on the mistake, hoping things will get better? Or be objective, know the market has risk and stocks can go down a lot more, and correct the mistake by selling at a small loss?
As always, I'll take number two option.
Of course, JDSU may rebound over the coming days ... but the reason why I bought it is no longer valid, that ascending trendline didn't work, so I have no valid technical or fundamental motive to keep on holding. The only motive I could have is «but I'm losing, why not wait to have a profit or at least a draw to get out?» The answer is: «The market doesn't know me or my buying price. That is completely irrelevant for the market, so it is irrelevant for me too, because I want to be in sintony and harmony with the market.»
I'll sell JDSU at today's open.
On his radio show yesterday, Jim Cramer devoted some time to JDSU, declaring that the company has been "fixed" and declaring it a buy. So you may see it up at the open.
robt
I thought I'd just update you an Cramers picks. In May of 2004 he was long in his portfolio the following: JDSU at 3.36, NT at 4.00, and CHTR at 3.80. All of these companies were fixed then. Think a year and a half shows he might have been a little premature. Don't waste your time on the man. His show is the true measure of unprofessionalism.
Jim Cramer is in show business not in investment business.
I did not make a qualitative judgement on Cramer. As a member of the media, he does have an influence on the market -- often to the counter of his intentions. He is going to be mentioned in terms of his influence from time to time. Doing so doesn't make me one of his acolytes.
Cramer-inspired runs are often good for a quick long or short trade, so I sometimes listen to see if he mentions a stock I know well enough to have confidence I'll be on the correct side of a play.
Just because Cramer has some connection to it is no reason to say no to 'found money.'
Be very careful with James Cramer's recommendations.
I read his book and his wife is the true trading "Goddess" who is constantly correcting Jim's stock trading mistakes.
Cramer often doesn't follow his own "Trading Rules" mentioned in his book. Why?
Jim Cramer was given some credibility since Mad Money devue in April, but we had a BULL MARKET since April - July! Since July-August, take a look at his portfolio.
I like David's "Open to public" show of his trades, good AND bad. I use his recommendations and ultimately make my own decisions when to buy and sell. So far, I am up $15,000+ this year since I joined 3StocksOnFire. And this is during the bearish trend since August!
David and Frederick are the "true" stock advisers, not Jim Cramer. IMHO
Not for the sake of argument. and not because of Jim Cramer, I decided to hold JDSU a bit longer, and of course it did break out.
Today was a major pullback, but I am still showiing a +16% profit.
This may just be profit-taking, or it may be a trend reversal. I'll be watching the tape closely tomorrow and decide whether to protect my profits by selling.
25% gainer now. Earnings surprise:
JDSU rode stronger-than-expected sales in its newly acquired business to a solid fiscal first quarter Wednesday.
The San Jose, Calif., optical networking parts maker posted a loss of $67 million, or 4 cents a share, compared with a net loss of $145.7 million, or a dime a share, in the year-ago quarter. On an adjusted basis, excluding one-time events, JDSU's net loss was $16.2 million, or a penny per share.
Sales totaled $258.3 million in the fiscal first quarter ended Sept. 30. Analysts were looking for a penny loss on $250 in sales.
Looking ahead to the end of the current quarter, the company expects sales of about $310 million. Analysts had projected $296.8 million.
"Reflecting JDSU's more diversified business model, we achieved significant gross margin improvement driven by the strong performance of our recently acquired Communications Test and Measurement business," said CEO Kevin Kennedy, in a press release Wednesday.
Full cc not that great. earnings webcast:

Subsequent news coverage stresses widening loss, though they seem to be in a better cash position, and poised for further improvements in coming quarters.
Might be a sell-off tomorrow.

Trading for a Living (Thanks for the book recommendation, Aussietrader)
Nobody is "following" Jim Cramer. I mentioned him as a factor -- like the price of crude, or the presence of hurricanes. To deny that he moves markets is to trade with blinders on.
But the fact that everyone seems eager to focus on him, instead of on the stock, suggests that you guys are a little fixated.
It looks like JDSU is breaking out of a cup on the weekly chart.
JDSU approaching the support line...
JDSU earnings sent the stock down 7% after hours. The trendline support line comes in around 3.10-3.15. This seems like a decent entry and is definately within reach today.
Will JDSU bounce off this trendline??? >:D
nice TA and charting, Mr. Calven (Klein??). As a follow thru' here's my take:
from the chart below, you see there is resistance above at $3.57 and $3.73...but that's not my concern for now...why?? because a move to that level from here measn atleast a 10% return...good enough for a solid profitable trade...
but here's more:
a.) there is a recent term (1 month approx.) negative divergence between MACD and price action...seems to indicate price wants to move higher...but wait, let's look at other indicators
b.) RSI still has some way to go before it bottoms out...of course, it can make a quick jump like it did recently after bottoming at $3.24...but the difference between then and now is...back then, the MACD was much lower and sorta bottomed out...but now, the MACD (even though as mentioned above, shows negative divergence overall)...the last 3-4 days, it has acted in accordance with price movement...so there is a greater likelihood that price might continue to fall .... 1'st level of support though is $3.24 which was the recent low back in mid-April
c.) the stochastics of course have reached the oversold position, but they can linger on in that region for some more trading sessions before I see some strong reversal move
d.) Actually, the $3.24 level also acts as support because that was the previous resistance level back in Feb 1st week when it formed new high at that level and then pulled back before inching ahead some more.
e.) All said and done, I'd see if $3.24 level acts as support or not...and I'm stricly referring to the close above $3.24, not the shadows...why?? because you can always have a very bullish hammer pattern with close on or above $3.24 suggesting short term reversal.
The other scenario..which seems likely IMO is a consolidation in the current region, until the 200 MA comes up and lends support....actually, the 200 MA of $2.75 is pretty much on par with the previous high before Feb. highs which was $2.80 back in Dec. 1st week...so the next BIG support level is the $2.80 level..which, most likely may not be tested,m unless there is some kinda "kangarro tail" formation with the long lower shadow touching the $2.80 level but closing well above that...
I hope you get the picture.
Bottom line: - I would not step in at this time....next few days will tell us if $3.24 will offer real support..if not, watch for further downside before some reveral to take place.
I'm tired...DAMN! >:(
Would agree with your analysis - thanks alot!
Dont like the 20 day crossing below the 50...very bearish...
JDSU zoomed in technical picture - updated (more accurate) LT support line matched with a falling wedge pattern.
Cramer likes it but I wouldnt buy until 3.20
Would appreciate some comments on these charts/// Thanks >:D
The bulls are having a go at it. Lets see.
In at 3.11
Stop at 2.96

Jumped in this morning...............This one has based niceley and just broke above it's 50mva, I like it! ;D
I start to see some positive news for JDS Uniphase after read the latest news from Verizon that it plans to spend $22.9 billion on a new fiber network. JDS Uniphase also reported today that was selected by Shangai China Telecom, the incumbent telecommunications carrier for China, to ensure the installation, maintenance and monitoring of its I.P.T.V. services.
So, many news that could improve the performance of this stock for the months ahead.
In the daily chart we can see that the stock closed today under the resistance 2.25 DMA 50, and the MACD fast line crossed above MACD slow line. JDSU probably a top pick for next months, it's only my opinion.
Is it possible that we have reached bottom, I hope so. Probably premature but I think the stage is set now. :-\
(JMHO). 8 for 1 reverse split completed last week and earnings on Nov. 02.

JD has posted some good news in it's earning. Up 6% pre-mkt. Time to climb.

JDS Uniphase 1Q Loss Narrows
Thursday November 2, 5:08 pm ET
JDS Uniphase Reports Narrower 1Q Loss on Gains From Optical Communications Unit
MILPITAS, Calif. (AP) -- JDS Uniphase Corp., a maker of optical switching and transmission components, on Thursday said its fiscal first-quarter loss narrowed, aided by growth in its optical communications unit.
Quarterly losses narrowed to $17.4 million, or 8 cents per share, compared with a year-ago loss of $67 million, or 34 cents per share.
Excluding restructuring costs, stock-based compensation expenses and other items, JDS Uniphase said it earned a profit of 3 cents per share in this year's quarter, compared with a loss of 8 cents per share in the year-ago period.
Wall Street, on average, had been expecting a profit of a penny per share.
In a statement, Chief Executive Kevin Kennedy said it was the company's first profit, excluding certain items, in more than five years.
Revenue during the quarter grew to $318.1 million from $258.3 million, just shy of analysts' $321.6 million consensus estimate.
During this year's quarter, JDS Uniphase said revenue at its optical communications unit grew 37 percent from the year-ago period to $138 million. That helped offset an 11 percent year-over-year decline in advanced optical technologies revenue, down to $39.3 million.
Looking ahead, JDS Uniphase said it expects fiscal second-quarter revenue of between $332 million and $352 million, bracketing analysts' expectations of $342.1 million.
Shares rose 24 cents to close at $14.28 on the Nasdaq, and then climbed 69 cents, or 4.8 percent, to $14.97 on the INET electronic exchange.
Up 8% on the pre-market, despite that slight revenue miss :)
Those EPS numbers are on a pre-split or actual basis?
Thanks usedcasting, still have to fix my Metastock for that symbol change ... why did it change the symbol?
Good luck on this trade :)
Hey Dave, some sort of thirty day rule on on the reverse split.
:) :) :) :)

Seems like a comfortable ride to $20 ($2.50 pre-consolidation) **IF** volume on this bounce of the bottom is sustained.
I'm hoping that big-telco spending on last-mile fibre-optic upgrades ramps up in 2007. They have to compete more aggressively against the cable companies. (Personally, I can't wait to have choice on channel delivery; bloody cable company forces me to buy un-needed channels so that I can watch CNBC. Go telcos!)
I see $18.32 and $21.60 as resistance levels, the latter with considerable volume in late Aug-2006. Other than the general negative historical sentiment for this stock (past management has misstepped a lot and cost shareholders very dearly), a couple of analyst upgrades should help the upward momentum in the near term.
People have loved to hate this stock. Is it time to hate to love this stock (like an ex that has lost weight, gotten a killer body, landed a juicy A-list-movie role and become a starlet... maybe on way to true stardom)?
Profit all.

JDSU Introduces Industry's Most Robust 100 Gigabit Ethe...
MILPITAS, Calif., Aug 19, 2009 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- JDSU today introduced a set of 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GE) test solutions that will help 100GE component developers, network equipment designers and service providers unlock the performance and revenue potential of 100GE technology. The JDSU suite evaluates and verifies components, subassemblies and network equipment. Additionally, it helps service providers ensure reliable performance on new network builds.
According to the research firm IDC, 100G solutions are poised to come to market faster than 40G. Demand for 100G is accelerated by access technologies and services converging increasingly onto the same networks. This is driving greater capacity and bandwidth requirements and also introducing greater complexity. As the number of services and applications sharing high speed networks increases, IDC believes full testing and compliance takes on greater importance.
"The current shift towards 100 Gigabit Ethernet represents a major discontinuity in network infrastructures that creates a greater importance on the value of testing to ensure quality. At the same time, testing challenges are expanded by the growing service provider focus on customer experience," said Elisabeth Rainge, IDC's Director of NGN Operations. "We see JDSU well positioned to meet this challenge in the earliest stages of deployment and beyond."
Specifically, JDSU solutions support 100GE physical layer test including photonic and electrical signal testing as well as protocol testing for layers 1, 2 and 3. The full test solution includes:
-- The JDSU ONT 100G Module for testing optical and electrical interfaces
from the physical layer to Ethernet/IP, protocol testing, PCS layer
validation and transponder testing.
-- The JDSU Hydra for stressed receiver sensitivity on 100GE systems,
including stress generation and stress sensitivity measurement.
-- The JDSU MAP-200 for multiplexing/de-multiplexing, signal conditioning
and signal access of 100GE optical signals.
The range of testers covers all key requirements for the early stages of 100GE, including transponder testing/validation, network equipment development, and system verification testing (SVT). Advanced applications support developers in the challenging task of debugging and verifying highly complex 100GE multi-lane, multi-lambda products.
"100 Gigabit Ethernet will further enable manufacturers and service providers to meet the challenge of keeping pace with ever-increasing capacity requirements. It will deliver improved network flexibility and responsiveness to high-bandwidth service demand," said Dave Holly, president of JDSU's Communications Test and Measurement business segment. "Our 100GE solutions will help network equipment manufacturers and service providers bring reliable products and services to market quickly--and seize initial opportunities to gain market footholds."
About JDSU 100G Solutions
The JDSU ONT 100G Module offers leading precision to measure the IP/Ethernet layer. The tool analyzes packets and provides unmatched characterization capability. In addition, it offers unique applications for per-lane and per-lambda virtual BERT using an intuitive user interface for faster analysis and debugging. The 100G Module supports generation and measurement of the skew of multi-lane signals at the full range, one of the key challenges in 100GE systems. In addition, JDSU offers a complete solution for transponder characterization.
JDSU 100GE testers provide a broad range of interface options: transponders which are compliant with the CFP Multi-Source Agreement (MSA) to cover a wide range of systems with line rates of 40 Gb/s, 100 Gb/s and 112 Gb/s, supporting both 4x25 Gb/s and 10x10 Gb/s, as well as an electrical interface for direct measurement in electronics. The MDIO control interface of the CFP transponder offers remote supervision via an external connector. OTU4 capabilities are offered.
100GE testers from JDSU draw from the company's history of innovation and expertise. JDSU currently provides one of the industry's most complete 40G test portfolios and was involved in some of the first 40G field turn-ups. JDSU 40G products include the ONT, TestPoint, MAP-200, Hydra, and T-BERD((R))/MTS platforms; the ONT was the first all-in-one tester for 40/43G, including jitter and wander.
About JDSU Carrier Ethernet Solutions
JDSU offers a single-source Carrier Ethernet test portfolio that facilitates analysis of all seven layers of Metro Ethernet services. The JDSU portfolio provides the industry's deepest set of test features in an integrated, end-to-end approach to testing Metro Ethernet products and services, including lab and service verification, development and production, installation and maintenance, troubleshooting and overall service assurance. JDSU Introduces J-Complete, an Innovative Suite of Carrier E...
MILPITAS, Calif., Feb 08, 2010 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- JDSU today announced J-Complete, a suite of test applications that simplify the complexity of installing, troubleshooting and maintaining Carrier networks. Collectively, the test applications probe, discover and record the health and reliability of a network by characterizing not only the transport layers, but also the higher-layer, IP/TCP-based flows that impact applications and services. The test information is then delivered in simplified summary format to make result interpretation simple and easy.
With hundreds of performance-affecting variables across multiple network layers, network architects, engineers and technicians need recommendations on how to solve problems that cause customer dissatisfaction. Using J-Complete, technicians at all levels can make informed configuration changes on their own, based on industry best practices, without having to involve more senior technicians - improving the speed and efficiency of problem resolution. From basic installation testing with RFC 2544 to advanced provisioning with TCP Wirespeed testing, J-Complete offers the robust tools needed to ensure end-user satisfaction.
By delivering clear summary information, pass fail (green/red) results, intelligent troubleshooting assistants and true multi-layer application testing, J-Complete also uncovers quality affecting parameters that have the most significant impact on the proper operation of an application and that impact user experience the most. This information is then delivered in an easy-to-interpret summary to enable fast decision making.
"For service organizations committed to the continuous improvement of their network applications and services, J-Complete reduces operating expenses by expediting network fault resolution and circuit installation," said Jim Nerschook, vice president and general manager in JDSU's Communications Test and Measurement business segment. "Unlike other solutions that are focused on how best to test, J-Complete uses established best practices to deliver the expert analysis needed to accelerate the efficiency of both junior and senior technicians. J-Complete further exemplifies the JDSU commitment to the reliable deployment of Carrier Ethernet networks."
Many of the test applications that comprise J-Complete are available with the T-BERD(R)/MTS 6000A Multi Services Application Module (MSAM), T-BERD/MTS-8000 Transport Module, T-BERD/MTS-8000 Dual Module Carrier (DMC), and HST-3000 Ethernet SIM. J-Complete includes:
Capture/Decode for up to 10 GigE Ethernet/IP traffic
J-Mentor for expert diagnosis of packet captures
J-Proof to verify transparent Ethernet control frame forwarding
TCP WireSpeed for 10Mbps up to 10Gbps of TCP throughput testing
J-Assist for real-time, online help
J-Connect for automated discovery of remote test sets
J-Scan, a SONET/SDH virtual tributary/container and alarm scanner
J-QuickCheck for pre-RFC 2544 link verification
J-Profiler for Ethernet/IP Traffic Discovery
JDSU offers a single-source Carrier Ethernet test portfolio that facilitates analysis of all seven layers of next-generation IP networks. The JDSU portfolio provides the industry's deepest set of test features in an integrated, end-to-end approach to testing Carrier Ethernet products and services, including lab and service verification, development and production, installation and maintenance, troubleshooting and overall service assurance. The portfolio offers service providers and NEMs the confidence to successfully build, deploy, and manage Carrier Ethernet and Business Class solutions.

Fiber-Optic Network Plays See Rising EPS
By ALAN R. ELLIOTT, INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY
Posted 12/31/2010 06:03 PM ET
Fiber-optic network equipment makers finished 2010 on a positive note, closing as a group at a three-year high Friday.
The group ranked No. 34 in Friday's IBD, with six of its 17 stocks holding EPS Ratings above 80.
Fiber-optic equipment makers have seen a surge in demand in the past year. Network providers are being forced to expand capacity. Part of that is due to the growth of smart phones and mobile computing via netbooks and tablet devices. Streaming video services such as YouTube.com and those offered by Netflix (NFLX) are also affecting demand.
The surge has helped companies such as JDS Uniphase (JDSU) climb out of the sales and earnings slump of late 2008 and 2009.
JDS is trading tightly, near its April 2008 high, after clearing an eight-month consolidation in December.
Oplink's (OPLK) earnings growth has been strong and sales growth has accelerated over the past two quarters. Analysts see the strong performance continuing in Q4, with an estimated gain of 58%. The stock is forming a handle to its current base.
One of the sharpest improvements in the group has come from Sunnyvale, Calif.-based Finisar (FNSR) .
Its earnings declined in the four quarters ending with the October 2009 period. That has depressed its EPS Rating.
Earnings jumped to triple-digit growth through the fiscal second quarter, ended in October.
Analysts project 171% EPS growth on a 53% move in sales for Q3. Finisar reported net proceeds of $117.9 million from a stock offering ended Dec. 27. That leaves the company with a war chest estimated at $215 million.
Finisar leapt 5% Friday, leaving shares up 55% for December. Shares are extended after breaking out of a base-on-base pattern on Dec. 2.
Starts 2011 with a thunderous roar... ;)
JDSU Rallies Like Mad...monster vol on earnings beat.
Posted non-GAAP EPS of $0.29, handily beating analyst expectations.
On the beat, JDSU is higher by 22.6%.
Momentum and earnings growth.
With government support for upgrades, JDSU will continue run.
Wait for slight pull-back before entry to fill some gaps,however...it will continue to move upward.

How Long Can JDSU Continue to Crush It?
JDS Uniphase (Nasdaq: JDSU) starts 2011 with a thunderous roar.
The maker of fiber-optic networking equipment more than doubled its second-quarter non-GAAP earnings to $0.29 per share on revenues of $477 million. Both results were way better than the average analyst estimate, and sales also beat JDSU's own guidance senseless.
The stock is up by more than 25% overnight on this report and has gained 173% over the last year.
JDSU's Huge December Quarter Triggers Optical Stock Frenzy...
During the original Internet bubble, some of the most egregious stock market valuations came in shares of optical networking equipment providers. Thanks to the emergence of a large number of competitive local exchange carriers and various other new telcos, demand for optical networking gear soared – until it became apparent that the telecom industry's construction frenzy had created a gigantic bandwidth glut. The CLEC's gradually disappeared, and the optical stocks subsequently fizzled, and demand dried up.
No stock had a more spectacular rise in that period than JDSU (JDSU), which at one point had a market cap of $125 billion, before staging one of the greatest stock collapses of all time. But JDSU has been through a mammoth restructuring process, and lately has seen a resurgence in demand – the bubble era excess capacity has been soaked up, and then some. The latest evidence comes in the form of JDSU's earnings report for the fiscal second quarter ended January 1.
For the quarter, JDSU reported $477.2 million in revenue on a non-GAAP basis, or $473.5 million on a GAAP basis, ahead of the Street consensus at $437.7 million. Non-GAAP profits of 29 cents a share beat the Street by a dime. Gross margin expanded to 48.8%, from 47.4% in the previous quarter, and 44.6% a year ago.
For the March quarter, the company sees revenue of $440 million to $460 million, nicely ahead of the old Street consensus at $420.75 million.
"In fiscal Q2 JDSU reported record revenues, gross margin and operating margin, which exceeded our operating model target," CEO Tom Waechter said in a statement. "This is an exciting time for JDSU. Our market drivers are strong, our innovation engine and pipeline for new products is robust, and we continue to increase our operating leverage."
Update: As a number of Street analysts point out Friday morning, JDSU has changed its target margins structure: the company is now targeting gross margins of at least 49% and operating margins of 14%-17%; the old model was gross margins of at least 46% and operating margins of 11%-14%. The revised model is no doubt adding to investor enthusiasm for the shares.
On the news, JDSU shares have spiked in after-hours trading. Meanwhile, Opnext (OPXT), another optical equipment company, also reported better-than-expected results this afternoon. The result: the entire sector is headed higher, as carrier spending on network expansion projects begins to payoff for their equipment suppliers.
•JDSU is up $3.27, or 18.2%, to $21.20.
•Finisar (FNSR) is up $1.90, or 5.5%, to $36.33.
•Olcaro (OCLR) is up 67 cents, or 4.7%, to $15.
•Oplink (OPLK) is up 63 cents, or 2.4%, to $26.80.
•Opnext (OPXT) is up 27 cents, or 13.6%, to $2.26.
JDSU hits 2nd 52-week high in 6 days...
JDS Uniphase has been on a one-way rampage to the upside, and traders continue to look for more gains.
Last week the company hit an earlier 52-week high and jumped more than 25 percent after reporting it moved from a second-quarter loss to a profit.
JDS-Who? ;D The return of hot tech stocks...
NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- JDS Uniphase, a company that lost a then-record $56 billion in 2001, is now one of the hottest tech stocks of 2011. As '80s sitcom "star" Yakov Smirnoff would say, "What a country!"
Yup, JDS Uniphase is back with a vengeance. The maker of optical networking equipment reported boffo earnings last week, and shares are up an astonishing 36% since then. So far this year, JDS Uniphase (JDSU) is up more than 65%, making it the top performing stock in the S&P 500.
In case you forgot, JDS Uniphase rode the tech boom of the late 1990s and was a favorite of momentum investors.
I wouldn't be surprised if some poor schlub tattooed the JDSU ticker symbol on his arm to profess his love for the stock. The Jim Cramer joke among traders back in the proverbial day was that JDSU stood for Just Don't Sell Us.
But the company's fortunes took a nasty turn following the bursting of the dot-com bubble. Demand dried up, resulting in the aforementioned massive loss. The stock continued to languish for years and fell to a low of just above $2 a share during those dark economic times of November 2008.
The fact that JDS Uniphase has made such a triumphant return from its nadir --the stock's now at about $24 -- is clear evidence that some investors are willing to once again embrace riskier, momentum plays.
And it's not the only tech stock to have made a stunning comeback as of late.
Fellow networking equipment company Ciena (CIEN) is up 30% this year. Shares trade at around $27, up from a February 2009 low of barely above $5. Another hot optical company, Finisar (FNSR), has surged from a low of just $2 a share in late 2008 to about $40 now.
To the cloud! Wait, the what?
Graphics chip maker Nvidia (NVDA), which was below $6.50 a share in late 2008, is now trading at about $24. The stock's up 56% this year alone.
And then there's satellite radio company Sirius XM (SIRI). It's trading for only about $1.76 a share. So unlike the others I've mentioned, it is still a penny stock.
But it's done its best Virginia Slims impersonation. It's come a long way, baby. Sirius XM is up from a low of 5 cents a share in early 2009, when many investors feared bankruptcy was imminent.
There's an obvious question that now begs to be asked. Is this all reasonable?
Yes and no.
Many of these stocks may have run up too far too fast and are due for a pullback. Investors rightfully should be worried about drinking the tech Kool-Aid again so soon after the last bubble.
But as trite as it may sound, this recent tech rally does seem a lot different than 10 years ago.
JDS Uniphase, for example, is a solidly profitable company that's growing rapidly. Analysts expect earnings for this fiscal year to more than double, while sales are forecast to rise 32%.
It makes sense. Thanks to the popularity of smartphones and data-hogging social networking and video sites, there should be more demand for networking equipment as well as companies catering to the so-called "cloud" trend.
"The entire networking sector had been in purgatory for close to a decade. But the Internet has evolved," said Sunil Reddy, a portfolio manager focusing on tech stocks for Apex Capital Management in Dayton, Ohio. "E-commerce has exploded. There's so much more video and data. This growth is going to go on for a while."
More tech news from CNNMoney on Tumblr!
More importantly though, shares of JDS Uniphase are no longer valued at an absurdly high, bubbilicous price. The stock is trading at 26 times fiscal 2011 earnings estimates. Not cheap, but reasonable for a growth stock.
The same can be said for Finisar and Nvidia, which both trade at about 24 times earnings estimates for their current fiscal years.
"Valuations got so overstretched back in 2000 that it was obviously troublesome. Many companies were trading over 100 times earnings estimates," said Doug MacKay, CEO of Broadleaf Partners, an investment firm in Hudson, Ohio.
MacKay, who worked as a tech fund manager for Oak Associates during the glory days for tech in the late 1990s, said he's learned the hard way that companies with super-high valuations are unlikely to sustain them for long.
He's been keeping an eye on JDS Uniphase and Ciena, two stocks he owned at Oak, but has not pulled the trigger on them for his current firm. But MacKay said tech is still one of his favorite sectors.
"If you want to invest in growth, tech is still an area where you have to play," MacKay said.
He just prefers to stick with tech stocks at more attractive prices. He owns Qualcomm (QCOM, Fortune 500), Google (GOOG, Fortune 500) and Apple (AAPL, Fortune 500), all of which trade at price-to-earnings ratios in the mid-to-high teens.
Reddy, whose firm owns shares of Finisar, agreed that investors have to keep an eye on valuations. He said his biggest worry is that some stocks may be ahead of themselves.
Just don't call it another bubble right now.
"Like with any cyclical sector, people get too enamored with companies and when that happens, it's a cause for concern. But I don't think we're there yet," he said.
March 4, 2011, 2:45 PM ET.JDS Uniphase (and Friends) Off to The Races Again.
Juniper Networks, a big networking company, gave good news to the flurry of smaller players who benefit from its investment decisions.
Juniper is introducing a new switch that requires optical components made by companies such as Finisar, Oclaro and – yes – JDS Uniphase. Juniper is crawling a scant 0.4% higher, but Finisar is up 2.8% and Oclaro is rising 3.9%.
Just Don't Sell Us? It is soaring about 9%, a boggling move in a market that is otherwise broadly weak, including most tech stocks.
JDSU has had an intriguing run since the start of the year, to say the least. Its shares are up 89% and volume has soared. Short interest has also risen, jumping to 10 million shares as of Feb. 15, almost double the level on Jan. 31. But with average daily trading volume rising four-fold to 25 million shares, the short-interest ratio is essentially less than 1.
JDSU is threatening its high for the year of 28.16, reached on Feb. 11. And it seems undeterred by a Citi downgrade on Feb. 18 that contributed to a short-term decline that took the shares for 23.56 on Feb. 23.
With such a hot stock, it's a puzzle that insiders are such healthy sellers. According to Thomson Reuters, CEO Thomas Waechter, CFO David Vellequette and top execs Roy Bie and Alan Lowe have all been sellers. Most of these sales are part of automatic programs, but certainly bears watching.
