RTK uses the Fischer-Troupe method to synthesize liquid natural gas (which there is plenty of - in fact they burn off the equivelent amount of million of barrels of oil a day because it is too expensive to build pipelines to transport it) into a pure diesel fuel that can be used in any type of vehicle. The process is the same that SYNM uses - but, what RTK does is rent out the machinery to oil and gas companies to do the procedure themselves.

It is still in a nice uptrend and moves in tandem with the price of oil. RTK also does energy consulting work so it is more multifaceted than SYNM. It is a good company to hold ro the long run - tho it has advanced significantly in the last few months.

Rentech Issues Progress Report on Coal-to-Liquids Product Development Unit
Wednesday December 7, 11:00 am ET
Orders Major Long Lead Items
(First Fully Integrated US Fischer-Tropsch CTL Facility Expected to be Operational in 2006)
DENVER, Dec. 7 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Rentech, Inc. (Amex: RTK - News), a developer and owner of alternative and clean energy solutions, provided an update today on its proposed Fischer-Tropsch (FT) Coal-to-Liquids (CTL) Product Development Unit (PDU) it will be building at its Sand Creek facility in Commerce City, Colorado near Denver. The project, which will utilize Rentech's patented and proprietary FT technology, is expected to be the first Coal-to-Liquids project in the United States that could capitalize on the tax credits available for commercialization of this technology under the Energy and Transportation Bills signed by President Bush in August of this year.
The Sand Creek site, which originally operated as a methanol facility, will have the existing natural gas reformer and methanol synthesis unit removed. All of the associated product storage tanks and some utilities will be retained. The site also provides the opportunity for the future consolidation of Rentech's research, development and engineering functions at one location.
The PDU has been engineered to produce 10-15 barrels per day of ultra-clean FT diesel, naphtha and jet fuel through the Rentech CTL process technology. For Rentech's purposes, a gasifier capable of processing 25-35 tons per day of coal will be used to provide the synthesis gas (a combination of hydrogen and carbon monoxide). Rentech will primarily process eastern and western coal at the facility with the capability to also process petroleum coke as well as biomass. The product upgrading system will be engineered and fabricated by Zeton, Inc. and together with the gasifier from BioConversion Technology, LLC. are the long lead items that the company has already ordered.
The company has also initiated its state and local permitting process. Rentech estimates that the process will take approximately four months. Given the regulatory approval process, there can be no assurance that it will meet this projected time frame. Once permitted, the company will begin site construction, which it has scheduled for the second calendar quarter of 2006. The company believes that the United States' first fully integrated CTL facility will be ready for commissioning and startup in the fourth calendar quarter of 2006.
When in operation, the facility will provide test quantities of ultra- clean fuels to numerous groups which have expressed a strong interest in acquiring commercial quantities of Rentech's fuels. Entities with whom Rentech has been working include the Department of Defense, major metropolitan areas, including Chicago and Houston, as well as state and local government entities in California, Illinois, Ohio, Montana and Wyoming. Moreover, Rentech will also use the facility as a training center to support future Rentech projects and FT system operations.
Hunt Ramsbottom, president of Rentech, Inc., commenting on the progress of the PDU stated: "We are very pleased with the advancement of our work on the Product Development Unit at Sand Creek. Rentech's engineering group has been doing an exceptional job in preparing for this undertaking and getting the overall project underway. Having what we believe will be the first fully integrated FT Coal-to-Liquids facility in the country has strong implications for Rentech and CTL. By providing fuels to potential end users it will demonstrate the valuable and clean products that can be derived from coal. More importantly, the Sand Creek PDU will become a show case for interested parties worldwide to visit Denver and observe CTL technology in operation in a country which is becoming more and more dependent on foreign oil yet has the world's largest coal reserves."
About Rentech, Inc.
Rentech, Inc., a Colorado corporation formed in 1981, is the developer and licensor of a patented and proprietary Fischer-Tropsch gas-to-liquids/coal-to- liquids process for conversion of synthesis gas made from natural gas, industrial off-gas, or solid or liquid carbon-bearing materials, including coal, into high-value fuels and chemicals. These include clean burning, ultra- low-sulfur and ultra-low-aromatic fuels, naphtha, waxes and fuel for fuel cells.

Rentech, Inc. and Peabody Energy Enter Into a Joint Development Agreement for Two Coal-to-Liquids Projects
Tuesday July 18, 9:00 am ET
Largest Private Sector Coal Company to Co-Develop First U.S. Coal-to-Liquids Projects Utilizing Rentech's Fisher-Tropsch Technology
DENVER, July 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Rentech, Inc. (Amex: RTK - News) and Peabody Energy (NYSE: BTU - News) announced today that Rentech's wholly-owned subsidiary, Rentech Development Corporation, and Peabody Electricity LLC, a wholly-owned entity of Peabody Energy, have entered into a Joint Development Agreement for the co-development of two Coal-to-Liquids (CTL) projects, which will be located on Peabody reserves. The projects will convert coal into ultra-clean transportation fuels using Rentech's proprietary Fischer-Tropsch CTL process. The agreement represents Peabody Energy's initial activities to develop CTL projects in the United States.
The companies intend to make use of Peabody's reserves in Montana and the Midwest and will evaluate a mine-mouth project model to maximize cost and transportation advantages. One project is targeted for production of 10,000 barrels per day of transportation fuels while the other is projected to produce up to 30,000 barrels per day. The final locations, production volumes, product mixes and environmental considerations, including being "carbon capture" ready for each facility, will be determined during the initial development phases of the respective projects.
Peabody Energy is the world's largest private-sector coal company, and Rentech has developed an advanced derivative of the well-established Fischer-Tropsch, or FT, process for converting synthetic gas derived from coal into ultra high-quality diesel fuel, jet fuel and other fuel products.
"We're seeing an overwhelming need for coal-to-liquids developments in the United States to offset reliance on expensive imported oil, and projects like these represent a major part of our energy solutions," said Peabody President and Chief Executive Officer, Gregory H. Boyce. "Because of Peabody's leading reserves, we are uniquely positioned to capitalize on this significant emerging market for coal. We're pleased to partner with Rentech, one of the world's leading developers of Fischer-Tropsch technologies."
"We are delighted that Peabody has selected Rentech as a partner to develop advanced clean fuels projects," said Rentech, Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer, D. Hunt Ramsbottom. "This partnership reflects a major milestone in the development of clean domestic energy solutions using Rentech's coal-to-liquids technology."
The U.S. Energy Information Administration projects that global energy consumption will increase by more than 70 percent by 2030, and the United States will import 62 percent of its oil. At the same time, the U.S. Department of Defense recently has issued a request for proposals for significant quantities of Fischer-Tropsch fuels.
Under the terms of the Joint Development Agreement, Peabody and Rentech will evaluate the projects in stages by determining the scope and feasibility of each project first. After successful completion of these initial stages, Peabody and Rentech expect to establish a project entity and then move forward with the Front End Engineering and Design (FEED) for each facility. Initially the companies will share the costs of any third party development expenses and have equal interests in the projects. With the exception of the agreed upon sites, the Joint Development Agreement is non-exclusive and either party may develop coal-to-liquids projects at other sites.

Peabody, Rentech to Develop Two Facilities That Will Transform Coal Into Diesel, Jet Fuel
DENVER (AP) -- Fuel maker Rentech Inc. on Tuesday said it agreed with coal company Peabody Energy to develop two plants that will convert coal into diesel and jet fuels.
In a separate release, Peabody said the pair is evaluating sites in Montana and the Midwest where the company has coal reserves.
Rentech said the projects will target production of 10,000 barrels and 30,000 barrels per day of fuel respectively. Peabody said that together, the facilities would require up to 12 million tons of coal annually. Peabody, the world's largest coal producer, has reserves of more than 9.8 billion tons.
Rentech will provide its technology, a version of the Fischer-Tropsch process used to convert synthetic gas derived from coal into diesel fuel or jet fuel.
"We're seeing an overwhelming need for coal-to-liquids developments in the United States to offset reliance on expensive imported oil," Peabody said.
Rentech shares rose 80 cents, or 19 percent, to $5 in early trading on the American Stock Exchange. In the past year, the stock has ranged from $1.32 to $5.50. Peabody shares added 36 cents to $51.97 on the New York Stock Exchange.

There is a Coal to Liquids bill that is going thru congress soon.
RTK has been inching up
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=RTK&t=5d
America's roadmap to energy independence begins in the next few weeks. I'm referring to US Senate Bill 3325 and US House Bill 5778.
You can find the full text of these bills on the Library of Congress THOMAS search engine.
Now, you probably haven't heard much talk about these bills. But trust me, you will.
That's because these bills, if passed, could literally break America's dependence on foreign oil once and for all.
Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that we'll break our foreign oil addiction over night. I think it'll take some years. In fact, we think the US is experiencing an epic energy transformation. We're leaving the age of oil and entering into a new era.
And that new era starts with the passage of these bills.
You see, House Bill 5778 is titled the Coal-to-Liquid Fuel Energy Act of 2006... and Senate Bill 3325 is titled Coal-to-Liquid Fuel Promotion Act of 2006.
What is coal-to-liquid (CTL)?
In short, coal can be converted into liquid fuels like gasoline or diesel. One of the CTL techniques is the Fischer Tropsch. It was used in Nazi Germany, and for many years by Sasol in South Africa because, in both cases, those regimes were politically isolated and unable to purchase crude oil on the open market.
So they converted coal into liquid fuel to run their automobiles.
Given that the US has abundance of coal reserves, developing a coal-to-liquid infrastructure makes perfect sense.
And everybody wants a piece of it. Including the US government. It's easy to see why.
With over 270 billion tons of proven coal reserves, the United States is the Saudi Arabia of coal. If the United States converts just 5 percent of its estimated recoverable coal reserves, it would be equivalent to the 29 billion barrels of proven oil reserves in the United States.
Speaking in front of reporters, Senator Conrad Burns from coal-rich Montana said... "This legislation gives us independence from foreign sources of fuel, it ensures that our national security and that our military will have the fuel they need..."
Both of these bills are up for vote in the coming weeks. With the American public livid over rising energy costs, we believe these bills will pass with overwhelming majorities.
When these bills pass, the stock of a tiny $4.75 coal-to-liquid company headquartered in Denver, Colorado is going to skyrocket.
This is the same company whose CEO spoke in front of Congress last May. I have to believe that what he said had a major influence on lawmakers.
Out of all his testimony, here's the passage that I think sealed the deal:
"The company has developed a five-point strategy for commercialization...
We are aggressively pursuing multiple strategic projects in the US, with the goal of getting plants up and running at several sites very quickly. Third, we are developing a repeatable and scalable design that allows for expansion of production up to 50,000 bpd per plant that will provide for a very rapid expansion of the industry once the first plants are operational and proved out."
If each state in the Union had 3 to 4 CTL plants, we could nearly eliminate all foreign oil. In fact, the US has roughly 2,778 power plants. If half of those were CTL plants, we could produce 69 million barrels of liquid fuel every day.
That's why we're advising our traders to buy the company's stock now. I would like to personally invite you to participate with us in this trade.
If you're interested in buying this $4.75 CTL stock, go here: http://wealthdailymail.com/cntdir.asp?num=907

Rentech Sees Expanded Role for Coal-to-Liquids Through Air Force Testing
Monday September 18, 12:45 pm ET
Synthetic Fuels From Coal May Hold Key for U.S. Military to Reduce Jet Fuel Costs
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 18 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Rentech, Inc. (Amex: RTK - News) commented today on the landmark test flight by the Air Force of a B-52 utilizing Fischer-Tropsch (FT) fuels at Edwards Air Force Base. The Company believes this is an important step in the development of the coal-to-liquids (CTL) clean synthetic fuels industry for the United States and the U.S. military to ensure both energy security and the security of the country's borders.
The U.S. Military has affirmed that it wants to implement the use of FT fuels made from coal mined in the U.S. Based upon discussions Rentech has had with the Department of Defense (DOD) and a recent Request for Information directed to the Company, Rentech believes that its FT technology represents an attractive alternative to traditional sources of jet fuel. Recently, D. Hunt Ramsbottom, president and CEO of Rentech, provided testimony before the DOD on the role that Rentech's technology can play in developing an alternative clean source of energy for jet fuel.
According to published reports, the B-52 test flights represent what the Pentagon says is a 10-year plan to wean itself from crude oil and foreign petroleum producers who supply about half of the fuel used by the U.S. military.
"This is an extremely important moment," said Michael A. Aimone, the Air Force Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Logistics in articles in the Los Angeles Times and San Jose, Mercury News. "Our goal is by 2025 to have 70 percent of our aviation fuel coming from coal-based sources."
Rentech, a leading domestic provider of CTL technologies, currently has four Company directed domestic CTL projects in various stages of commercial development, including two in scoping and feasibility with Peabody Energy, and a fifth project under license in Wyoming. The potential gross production capacity of these plants is in excess of 100,000 barrels per day of synthetic fuels from coal and the company has additional potential projects in the initial scoping phase. When completed, these plants could produce the types of fuels the U.S. Military is utilizing in its B-52 test.
Rentech has been working with the Defense Department for more than a year regarding CTL technologies and the Military's interest in having domestic facilities that produce these synthetic fuels from coal, the country's largest and most accessible energy resource. Based on its current project schedule, Rentech believes it is uniquely positioned to be the first domestic CTL technology provider with the ability to deliver commercial quantities of these synthetic fuels made from coal.
The B-52 flight demo signifies the first time that FT jet fuel blended with JP-8 fuel has been tested in this manner. Mr. Ramsbottom will attend the event at the invitation of the Air Force.
About Rentech, Inc.
Rentech, Inc., a Colorado corporation formed in 1981, offers energy independence solutions utilizing American resources to economically produce ultra clean synthetic fuels. To execute this strategy it utilizes its patented and proprietary Fischer-Tropsch gas-to-liquids/coal-to-liquids process for conversion of synthesis gas made from natural gas, coal and other solid or liquid carbon-bearing materials into clean burning, ultra-low-sulfur and ultra-low-aromatic synthetic fuels.

interesting chart..
as soon as it touches the support zone it bounces back nicely, but whtih resistance thats another story. the classic "the trend is your friend", applys for this week.
whata do you guys think about this one for the near future.?
:)
It should bounce back into the $5.30 range. When the oil prices are high, their process is economical - as oil prices retreat, they do not look too attractive. Their production is scant and they will not make a profit until they can produce the product in quantity, not that that means anything.
SYNM is the other company that utilizes the Fischer-Troupe process and has been working with the DOD on the jet fuel.
I am thinking of going to Taco Bell, eating a coupla 1/2 lb. burritos, hooking up one of RTK's contraptions to my ass, and when it turns my methane farts into the gasoline-like fuel, I can power my car and drive to Europe and visit Ramsburg!
