This gun plays a prominent role in the book "Scarecrow" by Matthew Reilly, a great adventure book about marine commandos, bounty hunters and world domination. I also liked "The Contest" and Ice Station by the same author. Not Shakespeare, but lots of action. Like SWB today.
Is this a breakaway gap? Maybe, I know if its not and it fills I will be all over it like white on rice. I may take a position at the open. Beautiful looking chart.

Market Pulse: Smith & Wesson affirms 2005 estimates
Friday July 29, 8:22 am ET
By Mark Cotton
NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. , parent company of Smith & Wesson Corp, re-iterated its 2005 profit outlook on Friday. The Springfield, Mass maker of firearms said it stands by its June 29 forecast of net income for fiscal 2005 in the range of $5.1 to $5.9 million, or 14 to 17 cents a share compared with $1.4 million, or 4 cents a share reported a year earlier. However, Smith & Wesson said it still believes the adoption of a share-based payment rule, will likely result in a reduction in net income for 2005 of $400,000 to $600,000, or 1 cent to 2 cents per share for 2005. Sales for the year are expected to rise 5% to $124 million from a year ago, with firearm sales forecast to rise 11% over year-ago levels. The Thomson First Call average estimate is for full-year earnings of 15 cents a share. The company said it has asked the Securities and Exchange Commission if it can push back the timing of the publication of its 2005 results until it has fully evaluated the impact of the new share-based payment rule on its results. On Thursday, the stock ended up 6.5% to $4.76
Did some more digging and Cramer pumped the stock the day before the surge in volume. Still the company had good fundamentals and with Congress passing the new bill to protect gun makers this could be the beginning of this company getting more notice. I will watch it.
Wow...is all I can say!
We all missed this, didn't we ???
It is active in the pre-market too!!!
I guess the new bill passed, pulled the trigger! :D :D :D

Smith & Wesson Stock Climbs on Gun Order

Smith & Wesson Shares Rise As Analyst Says Pistol Order Is Larger Than Expected
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Smith & Wesson Holding Corp., parent company of namesake gun maker Smith & Wesson Corp., rose Tuesday as an analyst said a recent gun order from the California Highway Patrol was bigger than he expected.
The company's shares gained 36 cents, or 5.6 percent, to $6.77 in midday trading on the American Stock Exchange.
On Monday, the company said it received an order from the California Highway Patrol for 9,700 Model 4006TSW pistols for an undisclosed amount.
Merriman, Curhan, Ford & Co. analyst Eric Wold said the order is "significantly larger" than he anticipated and maintained a "Buy" rating on the stock.
In March, Wold said he expected the California Highway Patrol to order 7,000 pistols.
Since the pistols will ship between June and December 2007, Wold said the company will benefit from the order in 2007 and 2008.
"Given the estimated dollar value this order could represent, we now have increased confidence in our fiscal 2007 estimates of $179.5 million in revenue and 30 cents in earnings per share," Wold said in a client note.
This stock has come a long ways.

Smith & Wesson Up on New Coverage

Smith & Wesson Flirts With 52-Week High As Cowen Analyst Opens Coverage With "Outperform"
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of firearms maker Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. shot up Friday after Cowen & Co. began coverage with a bullish rating.
Smith & Wesson rose 39 cents, or 6 percent, to $6.87 in afternoon trading on the American Stock Exchange. That leaves it just off its 52-week high of $6.95.
Smith & Wesson "is a turnaround (story) with new management leveraging a strong brand to gain share in its fragmented market," Cowen analyst Cai von Rumohr said in a note to investors Friday. He rated the stock "Outperform."
The 153-year-old company booked 20 percent sales growth so far in fiscal 2006, the analyst said. "There's further expansion potential in long guns and defense/security areas," he added.
Last week, the No. 1 gun maker in the U.S. got an order from the California Highway Patrol for 9,700 model 4006TSW pistols for an undisclosed amount. The company expects to book revenue from the order in 2007 and 2008.
Von Rumohr expects orders like that to boost per-share earnings from an estimated 19 cents in the current fiscal year to 30 cents in 2007 and 40 cents in 2008.
Cowen & Co initiates Outperform. Firm initiates with an outperform saying the #1 handgun producer Smith & Wesson is a turnaround with new mgmt leveraging a strong brand to gain share in its fragmented market. The firm notes it's achieved 20%+ sales growth so far in FY06 from revamped marketing, new products, new customers, & productivity gains. They look for EPS to lift from FY06's 19c to 30c in FY07 and 40 in FY08 on 17-20% sales growth from new product ramp & new customer penetration; and cash flow conversion should lift to 80-100%. The firm says there's further expansion potential in long guns & defense/security areas, including M&A. They think SWB looks attractive at a 17x C07 P/E given healthy FY07-08 momentum.

North Carolina Department of Correction Converts to Smith & Wesson M&P Pistols
Tuesday May 30, 3:00 pm ET
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., May 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation (Amex: SWB - News), parent company of Smith & Wesson Corp., the legendary 154-year old global provider of products and services for safety, security, protection and sport, today announced that it has reached an agreement with the North Carolina Department of Correction for 5,700 of the company's new Military & Police (M&P) Series of advanced-design polymer pistols.
Officials at the North Carolina Department of Correction, who were involved in the testing and decision-making process, indicated that the M&P pistol incorporates the key features that are valuable in the day-to-day duties of their officers. Max Mathews, Lead Firearms Instructor for the Office of Staff Development and Training with the North Carolina Department of Correction provided the following comments, "The North Carolina Department of Correction has been using Smith & Wesson revolvers for 30 years. We currently employ over 10,000 officers and need to accommodate many different hand sizes and shapes. The M&P40's interchangeable grip panels have enabled us to select one pistol that will fit every officer. Overall, we believe the M&P40 will give our officers a safe, effective and reliable firearm."
The M&P Pistol Series offers a number of distinctive features that provide durability, safety and versatility. These features include a Zytel polymer reinforced frame with a ridged stainless steel chassis and a thru-hardened black melonite stainless steel barrel and slide for durability; a passive trigger safety to prevent the pistol from firing if dropped; and a sear lever release that eliminates the need to press the trigger in order to disassemble the firearm. A loaded chamber indicator is located on top of the slide, and an internal lock system is optional for military and law enforcement users. The pistol's innovative ergonomic design is enhanced with three interchangeable grip sizes, allowing the user to customize grips in a matter of seconds. The firearm also features an ambidextrous slide stop and a reversible magazine release, as well as an enlarged trigger guard designed to accommodate gloves. A universal Picatinny style equipment rail allows the addition of tactical lights and lasers.
Michael Golden, President and CEO of Smith & Wesson, said, "This agreement is a tremendous endorsement of our new M&P polymer pistol, and it signals an exciting new chapter in the 30-year relationship between Smith & Wesson and the North Carolina Department of Correction. Introduced just six months ago, the M&P is already in use by several law enforcement agencies across the nation, and is currently under evaluation with several others. We worked with a number of law enforcement agencies to develop the M&P series, and we believe the key features we have designed into the M&P40 are beginning to change the performance expectations that officers have for their duty firearms. We remain dedicated to developing and building innovative products that meet the needs of law enforcement and military personnel. Smith & Wesson is especially pleased to continue our long partnership with the North Carolina Department of Correction with our agreement to support their conversion to the M&P40."
A stock with firepower: Smith & Wesson
The maker of Dirty Harry's gun is hitting tougher targets lately, and its share price has been shooting up.
By Corey Hajim, FORTUNE reporter
June 2, 2006: 9:33 AM EDT
Looking for a small-cap stock that could "make your day"? Smith & Wesson, the 154-year-old gun maker, could add firepower to your portfolio.
The company has been hitting its targets lately thanks to new product lines, new management, and a return to profitable market segments. Over the past three quarters alone, revenues have grown 20%. Analysts estimate that earnings will rise 60% next year.
Already, Smith & Wesson's (Research) stock has shot up from under $2 at the beginning of 2005 to more than $7 recently. (Yet its valuation, 24 times next year's earnings, seems reasonable given that the S&P specialty retail index currently averages 22.)
Legislative changes have helped - specifically, the lapse of the 1994 assault rifle ban and the passage of the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. While the assault rifle ban didn't affect Smith & Wesson's product line directly, it signals a more gun-friendly environment. The Commerce in Arms Act, approved by Congress in 2005, prohibits civil lawsuits against gun makers, distributors and dealers when its guns are misused. Smith & Wesson has been relieved of several legal proceedings as a result.
The military market is also more friendly these days. Merriman Curhan Ford analyst Eric Wold sees potential for growth in this segment. "There is a big push [in the military] towards buying American guns," says Wold. "They don't want our troops carrying foreign weapons when they can buy something from a domestic manufacturer."
Smith & Wesson will be vying for a military handgun contract currently held by Beretta that expires in 2007. Wold thinks Smith & Wesson has a very good chance of winning the deal, estimated to be worth $300 million to $500 million. Given that sales were just under $126 million in fiscal 2005, such a contract could have a huge impact on the bottom line.
Things haven't always been so rosy. Founded in 1852, Smith & Wesson dominated the handgun business in the consumer, military and law-enforcement markets for almost a century. But in the early 1980s, it lost market share, partly because Austrian gun maker Glock introduced a polymer pistol to U.S. police and military. Lighter and easy firing, the new pistol took off. After that, Smith & Wesson went from supplying the majority of guns to law enforcement agencies to close to zero. Similar declines hit the company in the military market and over the following decades Smith & Wesson, while still one of the biggest brands in consumer handguns, suffered. By the end of fiscal 2002, Smith & Wesson had a net loss of over $5 million.
Michael Golden, one of the executives responsible for the huge success of the DeWalt line at Black & Decker (Research), became CEO in November of 2004 and began developing a turnaround plan. Golden, who had never shot a firearm prior to taking the job, said the strength of the brand was very appealing.
"I realized that this was a company that had been under-managed and under-marketed for at least 15 years, with a terrific legacy brand that I thought had a lot of power," he says.
A study commissioned by Smith & Wesson confirmed Golden's feelings. The inquiry found brand awareness so strong that consumers said they would consider Smith & Wesson not only for handguns, but for products it didn't produce - like shotguns, hunting rifles, and even security systems.
"This told us that the brand can be much, much more than just handguns," says Golden. "We've changed our focus from being a handgun company in the sporting-goods channel in the U.S., to a company in the global business of safety, security, protection and sport."
Golden made some key hires to implement his plan - salespeople with expertise in the military and law-enforcement markets, a licensing executive who spent much of her career at Harley-Davidson (Research), and a marketing VP from Coke (Research).
The people and the plan have paid off. After introducing a new polymer pistol designed specifically for the police and military market, Smith & Wesson has regained share. Just in the past month, Smith & Wesson received orders from the California highway patrol and North Carolina's department of correction, an estimated $9 million in sales. In 2005, it received its first military contracts in 15 years and in 2006 has secured a $15 million contract to supply the Afghanistan national army with 9mm pistols.
After 154 years, it feels like Smith & Wesson is just getting started. The company has made inroads in law enforcement and military markets, is introducing new product lines, has a powerful brand, a strong management team, and growing sales and income. Smith & Wesson looks like a good shot.

Foolish Forecast: Triggering Smith & Wesson
Tuesday September 5, 2:07 pm ET
By Rich Smith
Smith & Wesson Holding (Nasdaq: SWHC - News) reports Q1 2007 earnings results tomorrow afternoon. Want to know what Wall Street expects to see? Read on. Want to know what really matters? Read on a bit more.
What analysts say:
Buy, sell, or waffle? Five analysts follow the stock; all five rate it a buy.
Revenues. On average, they expect sales to surge 30% in tomorrow's news.
Earnings. They also expect reported profits to more than double to $0.07 per share.
What management says:
Smith & Wesson (S&W) capped a fine fiscal 2006 -- in which sales rose 27% and profits per diluted share soared 175%, even after expensing stock options -- with a move of the stock from the American Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq. A whole slew of initiatives have supported the company's revival, including a focus on sales to the U.S. government to help arm federal law enforcement and the Afghanistan National Police, and the introduction of new lines of "military & Police" firearms targeted (sorry, bad pun) at penetrating (ditto) domestic and federal law enforcement markets. The company has also switched from an independent sales force, in which salesmen sold both S&W products and those of other manufacturers, to one directly employed by the company and focused on selling only S&W products. Finally, Smith & Wesson is leveraging its strong name recognition and high-quality reputation through licensing deals (just take a look at their price list), and manufacturing firearms that one wouldn't ordinarily associate with the famed handgun maker, including tactical rifles, hunting rifles, and shotguns.
Put it all together, and management now projects that fiscal 2007 will see 14% to 18% sales growth and roughly a 50% increase in profits per diluted share, to about $0.31 per share.
What management does:
S&W's margin trends have been a mixed bag over the last 18 months. But last quarter's surge in gross margins brought the rolling gross tally to its highest level in a year. Combined with operational improvements, this started pushing operating and net profits up, too.
Margins % 1/05 4/05 7/05 10/05 1/06 4/06
Gross 34.4 30.2 29.3 29.6 26.1 31.0
Op. 8.8 7.5 7.9 7.8 3.9 12.0
Net 3.8 4.2 5.0 3.7 4.4 5.4
All data courtesy of Capital IQ, a division of Standard & Poor's. Data reflects trailing-12-month performance for the quarters ended in the named months.
One Fool says:
On a firmwide level, S&W predicts about $14 million in operating cash flow this year, and $8 million in capital expenditures -- yielding about $6 million in free cash flow. However, note management's clarification that the capex figure is for maintenance capex only. If the firm decides to fund any expansion outside of its core business, free cash flow will be lower.
So as good as the GAAP numbers looked last year, and as good as they appear this year, there's a significant difference building between those accounting profits (projected at $13 million this year) and S&W's actual cash profits. That has me feeling a bit leery of the attractive GAAP numbers. From a cash-profits basis, the firm isn't looking as profitable as its accounting profits suggest.

;D Fantastic Pick Travis, been watching your posts on this one from $7, never did enter... do you have an upside target?
A bit nostalgic for me, I grew up in Springfield Mass. Talked some with my dad about the gun maker, his take is that the current great growth is due to an agressive CEO who is doing all he can to make S+W more of a name brand and sell all kind of associated Stuff, ie. like "harley davidson" has done so well.
Thoughts on an entry at this point. does 10 seem like a threshold for another ramp up?
Thank you and Applaud for all of your efforts!
Cheers Joe

Talked some with my dad about the gun maker, his take is that the current great growth is due to an agressive CEO who is doing all he can to make S+W more of a name brand and sell all kind of associated Stuff, ie. like "harley davidson" has done so well.
Thoughts on an entry at this point. does 10 seem like a threshold for another ramp up?
Thank you and Applaud for all of your efforts!
Cheers Joe

Smith & Wesson Secures Contracts for M&P Pistols
Wednesday September 6, 12:00 pm ET
Columbus, Ohio Police and Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Police Convert to M&P40
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Sept. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation (Nasdaq: SWHC - News), parent company of Smith & Wesson Corp., the legendary 154-year old firearms maker, announced today that it has secured contracts to supply the Columbus, Ohio Police Department and the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport Police (DFW) with the company's advanced-design polymer pistol, the M&P40. The agreements call for 1,875 M&P40 pistols to be shipped to the Columbus Police Department and 305 M&P40 pistols to be shipped for use by DFW Airport police officers.
After an extensive evaluation process, both departments indicated that the M&P40 incorporates key features that provide accuracy, durability and flexibility for use in duty. During performance testing completed by the Columbus Police Department, over 60,000 rounds were fired through six M&P40 pistols, with no malfunctions recorded. In conjunction with the testing, an additional rapid-fire test was conducted and 2,500 rounds were fired through one pistol in 40 minutes. Officials at both the Columbus Police Department and the DFW Airport Police indicated that the M&P40 performed flawlessly through each test.
Sergeant Dana Winship, Columbus Division of Police, said, "Trying to find a pistol to match the range of hand sizes of the 1,800 officers at the Columbus Police Department, along with insuring accuracy, durability, and the stopping power needed for police work, was a daunting effort. After an extensive evaluation of the various makes of pistols available, the M&P40 proved to be superior in all aspects. Smith and Wesson developed the M&P pistol with the police officer in mind. The M&P40 is an ergonomic, lightweight yet controllable pistol with ambidextrous capabilities, excellent accuracy and a crisp, smooth trigger pull. The officers on the street deserve the best equipment available. Smith & Wesson stepped up and delivered that with the M&P."
Tom Taylor, Smith & Wesson's Vice President of Marketing, said, "Since the M&P Pistol Series was first introduced in November 2005, it has quickly changed performance expectations in the duty firearm test and evaluation process. We are proud to support the men and women of the Columbus Police Department and the Dallas Fort Worth Airport Police, and are pleased to add them to the growing number of law enforcement agencies that have selected M&P pistols."

We recorded net product and services sales of $47,604,449 for the quarter ended July 31, 2006, an increase of $15,754,726, or 49.5%, over the quarter ended July 31, 2005. Firearms sales increased by $15,843,818, or 54.0%, over the comparable quarter last year. Non-firearm sales for the quarter ended July 31, 2006 decreased by $89,092, or 3.5%, compared with the quarter ended July 31, 2005 due to lower specialty services sales, partially offset by higher handcuff sales.
Revolver sales increased by $834,701, or 6.3%, for the quarter ended July 31, 2006 to $14,098,090, compared with the quarter ended July 31, 2005. The increase resulted from a 11.8% increase in units sold, primarily in the sporting trade channel. The increase in the number of states adopting concealed carry laws has increased demand for our small frame revolvers. This has resulted in a lower average unit price, as the first quarter of last year included the introduction of the Model 460 revolver, whose selling price is approximately double that of the small frame revolvers. The revolver order backlog was $4,152,807 at July 31, 2006 compared with $8,973,700 at July 31, 2005.
Pistol sales of $17,345,254 were $7,895,105, or 83.5% higher, for the quarter ended July 31, 2006 than for the quarter ended July 31, 2005. The increase in pistol sales was attributable to the introduction of the M&P pistol as well as the government contract for Sigma pistols for the Afghanistan National Police. The M&P accounted for 63.9% of the increase in pistol sales. The pistol order backlog was at $15,359,409 at July 31, 2006 compared with $2,447,084 at July 31, 2005.
We are the exclusive U.S. distributor of Walther firearms. Walther firearms sales increased by $2,465,205, or 73.0%, for the quarter ended July 31, 2006 compared with the quarter ended July 31, 2005. The increase in Walther sales was attributable to higher demand across all product lines, particularly the P22 and PPK pistols. We believe that the restructuring of our commercial sales force in fiscal 2006 is responsible for the increase in the Walther line. Walther order backlog was $1,494,334 at July 31, 2006 compared with $1,324,527 at July 31, 2005.
Performance Center sales increased by $407,130, or 24.7%, for the quarter ended July 31, 2006 to $2,054,619 compared with the quarter ended July 31, 2005. Custom variations of the Model 460 were responsible for the increase in sales. The Performance Center had an order backlog of $1,562,428 at July 31, 2006 compared with $1,868,548 at July 31, 2005.

The remediation was completed in May 2005 and as a result we released reserves that had been previously established to remediate that property. approximately $8.7 million higher year-over-year. Inventory during the quarter ended July 31, 2006 increased by approximately $4.0 million. As a result of factory capacity constraints, we traditionally build inventory in the first quarter in anticipation of increased demand later in the fiscal year.
Cash used for investing activities increased by $1,151,350 for the quarter ended July 31, 2006 compared with the quarter ended July 31, 2005. Capital spending for the quarter ended July 31, 2006 was $3,410,079 compared with $2,299,620 for the quarter ended July 31, 2005, an increase of $1,110,459. We expect to spend approximately $13.0 million on capital expenditures in fiscal 2007. The major capital expenditures will focus on increasing pistol production capacity to meet increased demand, primarily our pistol product line, tooling for new product offerings, and various projects designed to increase capacity and upgrade manufacturing technology.
The $834,401 increase in cash provided by financing activities for the quarter ended July 31, 2006 resulted from higher stock compensation expense as well as an increase in short-term borrowings. Short-term bank borrowings totaled $3.0 million at July 31, 2006 compared with $2.5 million at July 31, 2005. The increase was attributable to higher capital spending. We paid $413,394 against the long-term notes payable to BankNorth, our primary bank during the quarter ended July 31, 2006.
As of July 31, 2006, we had $1,259,476 in cash and cash equivalents on hand. Critical Accounting Policies
The preparation of financial statements requires us to make estimates and assumptions that affect the reported amounts of assets and liabilities at the date of the financial statements and the reported amounts of revenues and expenses during the reporting period. Significant accounting policies are disclosed in Note 3 of the Notes to the Consolidated Financial Statements in our Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended April 30, 2006. The most significant areas involving our judgments and estimates are described in the Management's Discussion and Analysis of Financial Conditions and Results of Operations in our Annual Report on Form 10-K for the year ended April 30, 2006, to which there have been no material changes. Actual results could differ from those estimates.
Recent Accounting Pronouncements
In July 2006, the Financial Accounting Standards Board ("FASB") issued FASB Interpretation No. 48, "Accounting for Uncertainty in Income Taxes" ("FIN 48"), an interpretation of Statement of Financial Accounting Standards No. 109, "Accounting for Income Taxes." FIN 48 clarifies the accounting for uncertainty in income taxes recognized in a company's financial statements and prescribes a recognition threshold and measurement process for financial statement recognition and measurement of a tax position taken or expected to be taken in a tax return. FIN 48 also provides guidance on derecognition, classification, interest and penalties, accounting in interim periods, disclosure and transition and will become effective for us for fiscal years beginning after December 15, 2006. We are in the process of evaluating the impact of adoption of FIN 48. Item 3. Quantitative and Qualitative Disclosures About Market Risk
We have purchased Euro participating forward option contracts to minimize the fluctuations in exchange rates when purchasing finished goods and components from a European supplier. Participating forward options provide full protection against the depreciation of the U.S. dollar and partial benefit from the appreciation of the U.S. dollar. If the Euro strengthens above the average rate, we will not pay more than the average rate. If the Euro weakens below the average rate, 50% of the Euros are at the average rate and the remaining 50% of the Euros are paid for at the spot rate. As of July 31, 2006, we had three 600,000 Euros option contracts

Item 4. Controls and Procedures
Evaluation of Disclosure Controls and Procedures We have carried out an evaluation, under the supervision and with the participation of our management, including our Chief Executive Officer and our Chief Financial Officer, of the effectiveness of the design and operation of our disclosure controls and procedures. As defined in Rules 13a-15(e) and 15d-15(e) under the Securities Exchange Act, disclosure controls and procedures are controls and other procedures that are designed to ensure that information required to be disclosed by us in the reports we file or submit under the Securities Exchange Act is recorded, processed, summarized, and reported within the time periods specified in the SEC's rules and forms. Disclosure controls and procedures include controls and procedures designed to ensure that information required to be disclosed by us in the reports we file or submit under the Securities Exchange Act is accumulated and communicated to our management, including our Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer, as appropriate, to allow timely decisions regarding required disclosure. We formed a disclosure committee in the fall of 2002 that includes senior financial, operational, and legal personnel charged with assisting the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer in overseeing the accuracy and timeliness of the periodic reports filed under the Security Exchange Act and in evaluating regularly our disclosure controls and procedures.
Based on this evaluation, our Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer have concluded that, as of July 31, 2006, our disclosure controls and procedures are effective at a reasonable assurance level in that they were reasonably designed to ensure that information required to be disclosed by us in the reports we file or submit under the Security Exchange Act (i) is recorded, processed, summarized and reported within the time periods specified in the rules and forms of the SEC, and (ii) is accumulated and communicated to management, including our Chief Executive Officer and Chief Financial Officer, as appropriate to allow timely decisions regarding required disclosure. There have been no changes in our internal control over financial reporting that occurred during the most recent fiscal quarter that materially affected, or is reasonably likely to materially affect, our internal control over financial reporting.

Smith & Wesson, chalked up a 49% sales increase and a 25% profit rise fired up by higher sales of its new guns to law enforcement and to the U.S. Army, which is using them to equip Afghan government forces.

Smith & Wesson Pops
Monday September 11, 1:24 pm ET
By Rich Smith
Smith & Wesson Holding (Nasdaq: SWHC - News) wowed Wall Street last week, delivering fiscal first-quarter 2007 sales growth far exceeding expectations, better profits than predicted, and upping guidance for the rest of the new fiscal year (2007). Result: a one-day 8% pop in the share price.
Year over year, the company posted revenue growth of 50% on the strength of amazing pistol sales growth. Firearms revenue in general grew 54%, while Walther pistol sales rocketed 73% and S&W's own-brand sales grew 84%. Management executed brilliantly on its promise to grow sales of its new Military & Police (M&P) line of products, reporting that sales to law enforcement had doubled since this time last year, and that combined sales to law enforcement and the federal government (including U.S. Army purchases used to arm the Afghan military and police) more than tripled.
Although the company was not specific on this point, I suspect that the large increase in volume of sales also benefited S&W by delivering certain economies of scale. In a world of continued high energy and raw materials prices, it would otherwise be hard to explain the 530-basis point improvement in gross margins to 34.7%.
Mind you, the lower parts of the income statement didn't look nearly so good. Operating margins declined 270 basis points to 12.4%, and net margins fell 140 basis points to 7.1%. However, both of these numbers are deceiving; one year ago, earnings benefited from a one-time "environmental reserve reduction" that temporarily inflated operating and net margins, and that did not recur this quarter.
And speaking of recurring events, management seems pretty confident that last week's numbers were no flash in the pan. Looking farther out, it expects to repeat success and maintain gross margins in the 34% range. It also upped sales and earnings guidance by roughly 10%, and now predicts $200 million in revenue and $0.36 per share for the year.
Where's the cash?
So much for the world according to GAAP. But as pretty as the accounting profits picture appears, it seems my concerns about free cash flow, expressed in last week's Foolish Forecast, have proven correct. In predicting its cash flow for the rest of the year, S&W scaled back its operating cash flow estimate for the year to about $13 million, while adding $5 million in expansion capital expenditures (to fund its move into producing "long guns") to its already-stated objective of $8 million in maintenance capex. Result: Even as management upped its GAAP profits prediction to $15 million, its free cash flow now looks likely to approach zero.
Call me a cynic, but when I see non-existent free cash flow, contrasted with apparently superb GAAP results, and promises of more of the same in the near future -- and combined with a planned offering of 15 million shares -- I get the uneasy feeling that the business isn't as strong as the GAAP numbers imply.

Smith & Wesson Director Buys Into Strength
Wednesday September 13, 3:01 pm ET
By the InsiderScore.com Research Staff
A director at Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation (Nasdaq: SWHC - News) bought stock with shares of the gunmaker at an all-time high.
Vice Chairman Robert Scott, a director at Smith & Wesson since December 1999, purchased 30,000 shares at $11.31 on September 12th, boosting his holdings to 370,000 shares. Previously, Scott bought 10,000 shares at $5.61 in March, and 30,000 shares at $5.58 in September 2005. Scott also exercised options on 300,000 shares at $0.89 in September 2005, and he currently holds options for 10,000 shares.
Scott's was scored 1.5 out of 4.0 by InsiderScore.com's proprietary scoring algorithm.
Scott was previously the vice president of business development and, later, president of Saf-T-Hammer Corp., which bought Smith & Wesson in 2001. He served as chairman of Smith & Wesson's wholly owned subsidiary, Smith & Wesson Corp., in 2003, and was a consultant for Smith & Wesson from May 2004 to February 2006. From November 2004 to May 2005, Scott was selling shares of Smith & Wesson, disposing of 488,000 shares at an average price of $1.91.
In May 2001, Scott was issued warrants with a cashless exercise clause for 5 million shares at $0.89. The company amended the warrants in May 2005, removing the cashless exercise clause, and in September 2005, Scott tendered his unexercised options to the company in exchange for $2.67 per share in cash. Scott and two other directors, both former Saf-T-Hammer Corp. executives, also agreed to sell Smith & Wesson back an aggregate of 1.2 million shares at $5.33 if the company so requests.
Directors at Smith & Wesson receive an annual retainer of $60,000, plus options for 10K shares each year. Scott receives an additional $18,000 in cash compensation plus a per diem expense allowance of $1,000 while traveling on behalf of our company at various industry functions.
Since hitting a 52-week low of $3.50 in December 2005, shares of Smith & Wesson have marched steadily higher. The stock has closed higher each month except in July, when it closed at the same price as it did in June. Smith & Wesson has also hit a new all-time high each month since May, and the stock has hit all-time highs on 11 of the past 12 trading days, including today when it hit $12.73.
Smith & Wesson's strength can be attributed to a number of factors, not the least being a string of impressive quarterly results backed up by contract wins. The stock has also benefited from an early July inclusion in the Russell 2000 and Russell 3000 indices, and a move from the American Stock Exchange, where it traded under the "SWB" symbol, to the NASDAQ. The recent strength comes on the heels of an impressive fiscal first quarter 2007 earnings report.
For Q1 (ended July 31, 2006), Smith & Wesson reported net income of $3.4 million, or 8 cents per share, up from $2.69 million, or 7 cents per share, a year earlier, and a penny better than analysts expected. Revenue, meanwhile, rose 49.5% to $48 million, or $5 million better than analysts had forecast. Sales of the company's Smith & Wesson pistols rose 83.5% and sales of Walther pistols shot up 73%, pacing an overall 54% increase in firearms sales. Smith & Wesson's license revenue fell from $800,000 to $400,000.
Looking forward, Smith & Wesson forecast revenue of $200 million for fiscal 2007, an increase of 26.6% year-over-year, and net income of $15 million, or 36 cents per share, a 72% increase from the prior year. The company's $13 million in CapEx is expected to be fully-funded by cash flow from operations, with most of the expenditures coming in the first half.
"Our strategy also calls for diversification into new markets with new products. Market research indicated that our strong Smith & Wesson brand could be successfully transferred into new markets, including the long gun market for tactical rifles, hunting rifles and shotguns. In fiscal 2006, we introduced our new M&P tactical rifle series, which is being well received in the market place. We intend to continue our expansion into other segments of the long gun market, with the introduction of new product offerings during the first half of calendar 2007," President & CEO Michael Golden said.
Following earnings, analysts at Merriman, Rodman and Renshaw, and Cowen were bullish on the name. Merriman said Smith & Wesson's entry into the military and law enforcement sectors combined with new product extensions should increase sales and profitability. Based on their P/E multiple of 28X to 32X, Merriman believes the stock could trade into the $12.60 to $14.40 range. Cowen, meanwhile, said Smith & Wesson could outperform the market by 15% in the next six to twelve months.
Worth Noting: To fund potential acquisitions, Smith & Wesson has filed a shelf registration for the sale of up tp 15 million shares of common stock. The company also recently received an additional $30 million line of credit from lenders to use for acquisitions.
"While no acquisitions are currently planned, establishing these funding vehicles will allow the Company to move quickly in the event desirable acquisitions are identified," Smith & Wesson said in its earnings release.
Smith & Wesson currently has a little more than 39.5 million shares outstanding.
InsiderScore.com issued six previous Research Notes on Smith & Wesson, the first coming in March 2005 when the stock was trading around $2.15. Our most recent note was in March, when Scott and Golden bought shares in a range of $5.61 to $5.85. Other than a small buy a week after our last note, Scott's buy yesterday was the first by any Smith & Wesson insider since March.

This gun maker has been killing it's 52 week high for a weeks now.
With law enforcement and the military as primary customers, there could be a lot more upside in this stock.
I really like the fact that institutional ownership is quite minimal and that a roaring economy isn't needed to fuel growth here! Volume is up as well as the revenue up 49.5% over the comparable quarter last year.

Bang, what do you think here?? Momentum is deffinately slowing, Could be a double top forming, getting ready for a decent pullback which the Gun maker has not had in a long time! As i mentioned before I have read and watched from $6's, kicking myself at every point up tick, Now i am watching for a short possibility!?!?! The entire market is looking a little top heavy and everything needs to correct (except MNCS.ob :) right?
Just trying to spark some discussion... OMNI very different sector, but similar Fundimental numbers has had a solid correction from the $12 area... I see a distinct possibility that SWHC could dip to 10-11... I will be a buyer when it comes out of that.. not convinced to short yet but looking at it!

Smith & Wesson Enters Shotgun Market
Thursday November 16, 1:00 pm ET
Company to Launch Fixed-Action and Semi-Automatic Shotguns at 2007 SHOT Show
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., Nov. 16 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation (Nasdaq: SWHC - News), parent company of Smith & Wesson Corp., the legendary 154-year old company in the global business of safety, security, protection and sport, today announced that it will enter the market for shotguns in 2007 and plans to unveil two new lines of innovative shotguns at this year's Shooting, Hunting and Outdoor Trade (SHOT) Show, January 11-14, 2007 in Orlando, Florida.
Michael F. Golden, Smith & Wesson's President and CEO, said, "We conducted an extensive study in 2004 which told us that consumer purchase intent strongly supported a Smith & Wesson entry into the long gun market for rifles and shotguns. At approximately $1 billion, nearly 60% larger than our traditional revolver and pistol market, the long gun market represents a significant opportunity for growth. The study further indicated that the Company's brand would be well-received in the highly fragmented, $350 million shotgun segment. As a result, we have entered into an agreement with a team of industry veterans, who have formed a partnership and constructed manufacturing facilities with the sole purpose of producing our innovative line of Smith & Wesson designed shotguns."
Smith & Wesson Elite Series(TM)
The Elite Series will initially consist of the Elite Gold(TM) side-by-side 20-gauge shotguns, and the Elite Silver(TM) over-and-under 12-gauge shotguns. The Elite Gold models will feature a patent-pending, Smith & Wesson designed trigger plate action, which enables a gracefully rounded and sculpted receiver; hand-cut checkering and engraving; AAA (grade III) Turkish walnut stocks; and a precise wood-to-metal fit. The Elite Silver Series will feature over-and-under 12-gauge shotguns that share the same custom design features as the Gold Series, with the addition of machined, monobloc barrels. Both the Elite Gold and Elite Silver shotguns will be crafted with hand engraved receivers finished in a true bone charcoal case hardening, for added protection and distinct coloring. The Smith & Wesson Elite Series will provide consumers with high-end shotguns in a value-added price range. Additional configurations and gauges within the series will be added in the future.
Smith & Wesson Heirloom Warranty(TM)
In conjunction with the launch of its Elite Series, Smith & Wesson will introduce the Smith & Wesson Heirloom Warranty program, which will come standard with the purchase of each Elite Series shotgun. The Heirloom Warranty program is the first warranty of its kind in the firearms industry, and provides both the original buyer, as well as the buyer's chosen heir, with a lifetime warranty on all Elite Series shotguns.
Smith & Wesson 1000 Series(TM)
The Smith & Wesson 1000 Series of semi-automatic shotguns has been designed with features that place the 1000 Series among the lightest weight and most reliable self-loading shotguns on the market. At the core of the new 1000 Series is a gas cylinder mechanism that has been uniquely engineered to deliver top performance, regardless of even the harshest conditions. Lightweight, durable and capable of handling today's hardest recoiling loads, the 1000 Series will initially be available in 29 separate configurations. Each shotgun in the 1000 Series will also feature a broad array of components and accessories to satisfy the needs of professional sportsmen as well as novice hunters.
The Smith & Wesson Elite Gold and Elite Silver Series of shotguns, as well as the new 1000 Series of semi-automatic shotguns, have been designed by Smith & Wesson and incorporate several pending patents. Because the series will be produced in facilities dedicated entirely to manufacturing Smith & Wesson shotguns, as opposed to private labeling, Smith & Wesson shotguns will be distinct and unique in the marketplace.
Golden continued, "By partnering with seasoned veterans and securing dedicated facilities in Turkey that have been built entirely for our use, we are entering the market with new products very quickly, with a high degree of quality, and with no investment of capital. The exclusivity within our agreement also allows us to control every element of product design, quality, and capacity, and will insure our ability to develop and deliver new and innovative shotgun models on a regular basis. That innovation has become a hallmark of the Smith & Wesson brand."
"Our entry into shotguns represents our continued expansion as a global provider of products and services for the safety, security, protection and sport markets. Having successfully entered the long gun market with the introduction of our M&P15 tactical rifle series in February 2006, our move into shotguns represents the second chapter in our long gun growth strategy. We continue to explore opportunities in the market for hunting rifles as well, which represents the third and largest segment of the long gun market where we have yet to offer products. We are excited about carrying the strength and reputation of the Smith & Wesson brand further into the long gun market, and we look forward to delivering to our new shotgun customers the same level of quality and customer service that has made us a leader in the firearms industry," concluded Golden.

Below are the 6 Month and 2 Year Charts
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 13, 2007 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation (SWHC, Trade), parent company of Smith & Wesson Corp., the legendary 155-year old company in the global business of safety, security, protection and sport, today announced financial results for the third fiscal quarter and nine months ended January 31, 2007.
Sales for the third quarter ended January 31, 2007 were $53.9 million, which was 39.5% higher than sales of $38.6 million for the comparable quarter last year. Results for the quarter included January sales for Thompson/Center Arms. The acquisition of Thompson was completed on January 3, 2007, and third quarter sales reflect $3.3 million in sales from Thompson for the period from the acquisition date to January 31, 2007.
Firearms sales of $50.8 million for the third quarter of fiscal 2007 increased 41.0% over firearms sales of $36.0 million for the comparable quarter last year and reflected a 59.5% increase in Smith & Wesson pistol sales and a 66.5% increase in Walther pistol sales.
Pistol sales growth of 59.5% for the third quarter of fiscal 2007 was driven by several factors, including continued strong sales of the Military & Police (M&P) line to law enforcement agencies and to consumers. To date, 158 law enforcement agencies have purchased, approved for purchase, or approved for on-duty carry, our M&P polymer pistols, a product line we introduced a year ago. Law enforcement sales for the third quarter of fiscal 2007 increased by over 135% from the comparable quarter in fiscal 2006.
Sporting goods channel sales for the third quarter of fiscal 2007 increased by 29.6% over the comparable quarter last year. This marks the first quarter in which we are comparing performance against the fully direct sales force we established in mid-fiscal 2006. The increase was attributable to continuing progress in our sales and marketing programs and new product introductions, including the M&P series of products. Sales of the Walther product line benefited from our direct sales force and from sales and marketing programs, posting growth of 66.5% over the comparable quarter of fiscal 2006.
Net income for the third quarter of fiscal 2007 was $1.6 million, or $0.04 per diluted share, compared with $1.1 million, or $0.02 per diluted share, for the comparable quarter last year. Net income for the current quarter was impacted by approximately $1.7 million of non-cash charges for the amortization of the acquired tangible and intangible long term assets of Thompson/Center Arms, which equated to approximately $1.1 million on an after-tax basis, or $0.03 per share. Excluding these charges, net income would have been $2.6 million, or $0.07 per share.
Gross profit of $17 million, or 31.3%, for the third quarter of fiscal 2007 was 2.4 percentage points higher than gross profit of $11.3 million, or 28.9%, for the comparable quarter last year. Gross profit for the quarter was impacted by $1.3 million of non-cash charges related to the acquisition of Thompson/Center Arms. Excluding those charges, gross profit for the third quarter would have been 33.6%, an improvement of 4.7 percentage points over the comparable quarter last year. Operating expense as a percent of sales and licensing for the third quarter was slightly improved over prior year levels. That improvement was somewhat masked by increased sales and marketing expense related to the industry's annual SHOT Show, which occurred in January 2007, one month earlier than usual.
Sales for the nine months ended January 31, 2007 were $152.3 million, an increase of $46.2 million, or 43.6%, over sales of $106.0 million for the comparable period last year. Firearms sales of $143.7 million for the first nine months of fiscal 2007 grew by 45.9% over the comparable period last year.
Net income for the first nine months of fiscal 2007 was $7.8 million, or $0.19 per diluted share, a $3.3 million, or 72.7%, increase over net income of $4.5 million, or $0.11 per diluted share, for the first nine months of fiscal 2006. The fiscal 2006 results included a $3.1 million favorable environmental reserve reduction, an impact of $1.9 million net of tax, which contributed nearly one-half of the Company's net income for the nine months ended January 31, 2006, or $0.05 per diluted share on an after-tax basis.
Smith & Wesson President and CEO, Michael F. Golden, said, "We are extremely pleased with our results this quarter, which reflected the solid execution of our strategy to grow our core handgun business and diversify into new markets. We delivered record levels of profitable growth in our firearms business during the third quarter of fiscal 2007, supported by several new pistol and revolver products. At the same time, we achieved significant milestones in diversification through the launch of shotgun products and our formal entry into the hunting rifle market with the acquisition of Thompson/Center Arms. Operationally, we made significant strides in addressing the strong demand for our M&P15 tactical rifles by commencing in-house production to supplement our external supplier. We also increased our capacity to produce revolver cylinders with the implementation of new manufacturing processes and equipment. I continue to be extremely proud of our employees and their accomplishments on all fronts. We have delivered healthy, profitable growth in our core business and have entered all of the major long gun categories within two years of our decision to enter that market."
Diversification
Golden continued, "On January 3, 2007, we completed the acquisition of Thompson/Center Arms, a manufacturer and marketer of premium hunting firearms. This acquisition, which was immediately accretive excluding non-cash, purchase accounting charges, accelerated our entry into the hunting rifle category in the long gun market and provided us with access to long gun barrel manufacturing expertise, which is a key to our growth. We are very pleased with the results of this acquisition to date and the synergies we have identified. We have begun to install the Smith & Wesson Operating System within the Thompson manufacturing facility, and our initiatives have already delivered a 15% increase in production within our barrel manufacturing area.
"Our diversification strategy also includes entering the $350 million shotgun category of the $1.1 billion long gun market. In January, we introduced the Smith & Wesson Elite Gold, Elite Silver and 1000 Series of shotguns at the SHOT Show in Orlando, Florida. The shotguns were very well received by our customers and the trade media. Shipments will commence in the fourth fiscal quarter, and we expect to be in full production on all models by the summer of calendar 2007.
"The SHOT Show also provided a stage for the launch of our new hunting rifle products. Under the Thompson brand, we introduced the Triumph line of muzzleloader rifles as well as the ICON, Thompson's first bolt-action rifle. I am pleased to announce today that we will supplement this activity with the launch of the Smith & Wesson i-Bolt(TM), an internally designed and manufactured bolt-action rifle, at the NRA Show in April. Delivery of both the Thompson ICON and the Smith & Wesson i-Bolt will place us firmly in the $500 million rifle category of the long gun market.
"We continued to diversify our core handgun product portfolio in the third quarter by expanding our M&P polymer pistol series to include the M&P40c, a compact version of our .40 caliber pistol, and the M&P45, a .45 caliber M&P, which was unveiled at the SHOT Show and which will begin shipping in the fourth quarter of the current fiscal year. Like the rest of the M&P line of products, the M&P45 has been engineered with enhanced ergonomics, ambidextrous controls and proven safety features. We expect the M&P45 to attract strong interest from law enforcement agencies and the military. We will continue to develop new products in the M&P line in order to provide a broad selection for law enforcement, the U.S. government, and sporting goods customers," concluded Golden.
Outlook for Fiscal 2007
For fiscal 2007, which will end on April 30, 2007, we now expect net product sales to increase to approximately $225 million, which is $6.4 million higher than our earlier expectations that included our sales projections for Thompson/Center Arms. This increased expectation also includes our sales projections for Thompson/Center Arms, and would reflect an increase of approximately 40% over fiscal 2006 sales. Sales from Thompson/Center Arms for the period from the acquisition date through April 30, 2007 are expected to account for $19 million of fiscal 2007 sales. Both the M&P pistol series and the M&P tactical rifle series are expected to be key drivers of the sales increase for fiscal 2007. Our new shotgun line will have minimal revenue impact on fiscal 2007 as a result of the expected production ramp throughout the remainder of fiscal 2007. We expect sales growth in the sporting goods channel to grow at a healthy rate of 15% for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2007. We do not expect to see significant Federal government purchasing activity in the fourth quarter as the Defense Department budget debate continues in Washington. We recognized $5.3 million in Federal government orders in the fourth fiscal quarter of last year. Our sales expectations do not include the results of any potential future diversification initiatives, but do include growth in our existing sporting goods market, as well as continued sales penetration of the law enforcement, federal government, and international markets.
Net income for fiscal 2007 is now anticipated to be approximately $12.0 million, or $0.29 per diluted share. This would represent a 38% increase in net income over fiscal 2006. It should also be noted that fiscal 2006 net income included a $3.1 million favorable environmental reserve reduction, which accounted for a net of tax impact of $1.9 million, or $0.05 per diluted share, of fiscal 2006 net income. In addition, fiscal 2007 results are expected to be affected by approximately $5.0 million in non-cash, purchase accounting charges related to the acquisition of Thompson/Center Arms. The increase in net income is expected to result from increased sales volume, gross margin improvement, and our ability to hold operating expenses constant as a percent of sales and licensing.
We expect capital expenditures in fiscal 2007 of approximately $16.2 million, funded entirely by cash flow from operations. This increase of $1.9 million from our previous estimate reflects additional expenditures to support the recent introduction of the Thompson Triumph and ICON product lines.
At the end of the third quarter of fiscal 2007, we had no short-term borrowings. We expect positive cash flow in the balance of fiscal 2007, after the impact of our expectations for $16.2 million in capital expenditures.
Outlook for Fiscal 2008
We expect sales for the fiscal year ending April 30, 2008 of approximately $320.0 million, a 42% increase over forecasted sales of approximately $225.0 million for fiscal 2007. This increase in sales is expected to be driven by continued growth in our core handgun business, the ramp up of our long gun product lines and the full year impact of Thompson/Center Arms.
We expect net income for the fiscal year ending April 30, 2008 of approximately $27.0 million, or $0.60 per diluted share, which would reflect an increase of approximately 107% from our anticipated fiscal 2007 earnings. Gross margins are expected to be between 35% and 36% for fiscal 2008, while operating expenses as a percent of sales and licensing are expected to remain at fiscal 2007 levels.
Conference Call
The Company will host a conference call today, March 13, 2007, to discuss its third quarter results and its outlook for fiscal 2007 and fiscal 2008. The conference call may include forward-looking statements. The conference call will be Web cast and will begin at 8:00 am Eastern Time (5:00 am Pacific). The live audio broadcast and replay of the conference call can be accessed on the Company's Web site at www.smith-wesson.com, under the Investor Relations section. The Company will maintain an audio replay of this conference call on its website for a period of time after the call. No other audio replay will be available.
The Company expects to file its quarterly report on Form 10-Q no later than Monday, March 19, 2007, following a 5-day extension which has been requested in order to ensure its financial statements adequately incorporate the financial information of Thompson/Center Arms.

The contract calls for a total of 500 of the company's Military & Police (M&P) pistols chambered in .45 ACP to be issued to officers in the New Hampshire State Police and Highway Patrol divisions. The Smith & Wesson M&P45 pistols will replace competitive duty weapons currently used by the agency.
Officials at the New Hampshire Division of State Police and Highway Patrol indicated that the M&P45 pistol will provide their officers with several valuable features including interchangeable grip sizes, ambidextrous controls and proven safety features. The agency added that the M&P45's enhanced ergonomics, magazine disconnect safety, and ease of maintenance, were primary factors in their decision. The Smith & Wesson M&P45 pistol was selected by a committee representing multiple units of the New Hampshire State Police.
"After a close evaluation, it was evident that the M&P45 pistol provided our officers with the best combination of features for use in duty," said Colonel Fredrick Booth, Division Director of the New Hampshire State Police. "Along with its consistent reliability, the M&P45 proved to be very accurate and its unique internal design aided in reduced recoil and improved shootability. As we begin our transition to the Smith & Wesson polymer pistols, we are confident that the M&P45 will prove to be a valued asset to our officers."
"We are very pleased to be working with the men and women of the New Hampshire Department of Safety," said Leland Nichols, President and Chief Operating Officer of Smith & Wesson Corp., a wholly owned subsidiary of Smith & Wesson Holding Corporation. "Since we first debuted the M&P45 in February 2007, the pistol has been selected by numerous law enforcement agencies and has won various industry awards. We believe that the M&P45, along with the other models in the M&P Series, offers law enforcement and military professionals an ideal choice when selecting a duty firearm."
The M&P45 is manufactured with a traditional black or dark earth brown frame and is available with or without a frame-mounted ambidextrous thumb safety. With an empty weight of 29.6 ounces, the polymer pistol features a 4.5-inch barrel with an overall length of 8.05 inches. Providing one of the smallest grip sizes available on any .45 ACP pistol, the M&P45 comes standard with three interchangeable grips, allowing the user to customize the pistol to their preferred hand size. The M&P45 utilizes a steel dovetail mount front sight and a steel Novak(R) Lo-Mount carry rear sight. Tritium sights are available for low light conditions and a universal Picatinny-style equipment rail allows for tactical lights and lasers. The new frame-mounted ambidextrous thumb safety acts as a passive safety device allowing the slide to be pulled toward the rear, clearing the firearm without disengaging the safety. The M&P45 also incorporates a specially designed lanyard attachment for use by military and police.

Ahead of the Bell: Smith & Wesson Rises
Friday September 7, 9:01 am ET
Smith & Wesson Up After Raising Forecast, Predicting Better Sales to Law Enforcement
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of gun maker Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. rose in premarket electronic trading Friday after the company raised its fiscal 2008 profit forecast.
The Springfield, Mass.-based company pointed to robust sales of new shotguns and hunting rifles, as well as better sales to law enforcement, government and international markets. It now expects to earn 63 cents per share for the year, 1 cent per share higher than its previous forecast, which matches the estimate of analysts polled by Thomson Financial.
Smith & Wesson reiterated its forecast of $330 million in sales, about $4 million below analyst estimates.
Merriman Curhan Ford analyst Eric Wold kept a "Buy" rating on the stock. He said Smith & Wesson holds about a 10 percent share of the domestic law enforcement market, but sales of its military and police pistols are improving quickly.
"With almost 18,000 law enforcement agencies (and 800,000 officers) up for grabs within the United States, we believe the company has only just begun to scratch the surface," he said. "We have estimated the domestic law enforcement market to represent about $100 million in annual sales."
The company said 231 law enforcement agencies use or have approved the military and police pistols.
After the bell on Thursday, Smith & Wesson reported stronger fiscal first-quarter earnings and sales than analysts expected.
The stock gained 96 cents, or 4.8 percent, to $21 in premarket trading. Shares finished at $20.04 Thursday.

Smith & Wesson: Armed and Prosperous
Melanie Lindner, 09.09.07, 10:33 PM ET
On a day when most stocks nose-dived, gun manufacturer Smith & Wesson (nasdaq: SWHC - news - people ) shot up 5.09%, or $1.02, to $21.06 on Friday.
On Thursday, the company reported record earnings of $74.4 million for the quarter ending July 31, and raised its guidance for the remainder of the 2007 fiscal year. Analysts attributed the gun maker's recent success to its product line expansion.
"Smith & Wesson has done a phenomenal job moving beyond the handgun market to include long guns like rifles," said Eric Wold of Merriman Curhan Ford & Co.
It gained traction in the market through its January purchase of Thomson/Center Arms, a New Hampshire-based hunting rifle company. According to James Maher of ThinkEquity Partners, sales of Thompson/Center products have increased 22% in each of the two quarters since the acquisition was completed. Prior to its purchase by Smith & Wesson, Thomson/Center Arms' sales were rising quarterly in the single digit percentages. "The union of Smith & Wesson and Thomson/Center Arms was mutually beneficial," said Maher. "The company is performing extremely well with both revenue and earnings exceeding expectations."
With the fall hunting season right around the corner, analyst Amit Dayal of Rodman & Renshaw LLC believes Smith & Wesson's sales will continue to rise. "We expect management to remain aggressive on their advertising and market efforts to meet the peak buying season driven by fall hunting sales," Dayal wrote. Like Wold, Dayal believes that "investors should be monitoring long gun sales during this hunting season very closely." Dayal currently has an "outperform" rating on the company, expecting the upward trend to continue through the second half of 2007.
Competing gun makers didn't fare as well as Smith & Wesson on Friday. CompuDyne Corporation (nasdaq: CDCY - news - people ) ended the week unchanged at $6.95. Eastern Company (amex: EML - news - people ) dropped 2.28% to $19.30 and Sturm, Ruger & Co. (nyse: RGR - news - people ) finished down 3.92%, or 68 cents, to $16.67.

Supreme Court ruling lifts Smith & Wesson shares

Smith & Wesson stock jumps after US Supreme Court voids Washington DC handgun ban
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. climbed Thursday, breaking free of a downturn in the broader market after the U.S. Supreme Court overturned a handgun ban in Washington DC.
By a 5-4 decision, the Court ruled that the district's handgun laws violated the Second Amendment to the Constitution by denying individuals the right to own guns.
Smith & Wesson shares rallied in heavy trading, rising 44 cents, or 8.6 percent, to $5.55. Analysts said the ruling will have little effect on Smith & Wesson's sales, however. Cowen & Co. analyst Cai von Rumohr said the Washington DC restrictions were far tighter than most others in the country, and DC is a small market.
"(More than 90) percent of the country, except for Illinois, Wisconsin and DC, already permit gun owners to carry concealed weapons," he said, adding that 37 states don't require a concealed carry permit, or have laws requiring that guns be issued to customers who meet the requirements for getting a permit.
"This is a nice symbolic victory that has relatively little significance to their business," von Rumohr added.
A Smith & Wesson spokesperson declined to comment on the ruling.
Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Rommel Dionisio said it is hard to get a read on the effects of the ruling and what it might mean for other cities that restrict gun ownership. He said it is possible that some municipalities may change their laws.
Von Rumohr and Merriman Curhan Ford analyst Eric Wold said gun sales often pick up when prospective buyers expect more restrictive control laws to be passed. Wold said that is what happened after the Federal Assault Weapons Ban was passed in 1994.
Von Rumohr said he thinks gun sales would also increase if Sen. Barack Obama is elected president, as customers might expect more stringent gun control laws to follow.
In afternoon trading, shares of Sturm Ruger & Co. dipped 4 cents to $7.28.
Ammunition maker Olin Corp. lost $1.18, or 4.4 percent, to $25.48. As oil prices set all-time records and downgrades pressured financial stocks, the Dow Jones industrial average fell nearly 300 points and other major indexes suffered comparable declines.
After four months of basing this may be starting to turn around.

Smith & Wesson Stock Shoots Higher
The list of recession-proof businesses is short: booze, discount retail, consumer staples and now, it would seem, weaponry.
On Thursday, famed gunsmith Smith & Wesson(SWHC Quote) announced a deal to acquire the privately held Universal Safety Response, a maker of the kinds of gates, barriers, prefab guard houses and related equipment that organizations use to keep the riffraff out, and in so doing it pre-announced some rosy fourth-quarter revenue numbers. Investors cheered the news, sending Smith & Wesson shares up 19% to $5.88 on more than four-times the average daily volume.
The Springfield, Mass., company paid $52.5 million in combined cash and stock (based on Friday's market price) for Universal Safety, along with earn-out agreements that will go to Universal's former owners if the company hits earnings targets. Specifically, the deal calls for Smith & Wesson to pay up to 9.6 million shares and up to $26.2 million in cash.
In buying Universal, Smith & Wesson, maker of the .357 Magnum, has made its first step in a strategy to broaden its business beyond guns.
The company said in its press release that it expects Universal to bring in revenue of $100 million next year, and earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization of $15 million.
Meanwhile, Smith & Wesson said business has been so good that it will report sales of $99.5 million for its fourth quarter ended in April, up 20% from a year ago. That comes after a banner third quarter, when the company reported a 28% jump in total firearm sales. It didn't provide earnings numbers, but said its profit margin expanded to 31%.
The company will release full results for the quarter on June 22, after the market closes. Analysts are looking for earnings per share of 9 cents.
Gun-industry insiders have attributed the recent gun boom to President Obama: First-time gun buyers, it's been said, have rushed to buy firearms ahead of the new administration's assumed pursuit of tougher gun-control laws, according to a recent report by the Dow Jones Newswires. Other manufacturers have also seen their sales spike of late. Smith & Wesson rival, the onomonopieac Sturm Ruger(RGR Quote), has also been reporting brisk sales. Its profits in 2008 rocketed four-fold from 2007.
The news out of Smith & Wesson appeared to pull Stum Ruger shares higher as well. The stock was trading recently at $12.66, up nearly 9% on the session.
Smith & Wesson 4Q revenue tops Wall Street outlook
Smith & Wesson Holding reports 4th-quarter revenue above Wall Street forecasts, shares rise
On Friday June 19, 2009, 7:43 am EDT
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (AP) -- Pistol maker Smith & Wesson Holding Corp. on Thursday reported fourth-quarter revenue above Wall Street expectations, sending shares up nearly 12 percent in aftermarket trading.
The company said its fiscal 2009 fourth-quarter revenue rose 20 percent to $99.5 million. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had expected revenue of $90.8 million, on average.
"Demand for our handguns and tactical rifles remained strong throughout the fourth quarter, as evidenced by our revenue as well as by our backlog balance," the company said in a statement.
Smith & Wesson's backlog grew to over $200 million during the quarter, which ended April 30.
Meanwhile, the company said it is buying Universal Safety Response Inc. in a cash-and-stock deal worth more than $26 million as part of a move to expand into the perimeter security market. Franklin, Tenn.-based USR makes the GRAB vehicle safety barrier and serves clients in the defense and transportation industries, as well as airports and national laboratories.
Looking ahead the company anticipates the buyout will contribute $50 million in fiscal 2010 sales and $100 million in fiscal 2011.
Shares of Smith & Wesson rose 57 cents, or 11.6 percent, to $5.50 in after-hours electronic trading, having closed earlier at $4.93. The stock has traded between $1.53 and $7.52 over the last 52 weeks.
