Title: CDE - Sector: Basic Materials---Industry: Silver
Post by: phabrux on August 10, 2005, 02:51:55 PM
CDE got a nice bullish chart with a reward /risk ratio of 7.68

buy level(today):        3.91
             target:         6.17 =3.62 + 2.55
               Stop:         3.62
Reward/risk ratio:        (6.17 - 3.91) / (3.91 - 3.62) = 7.68

CDE got already a previous thread

I find a another play for CDE and far more conservative

Buy level : 3.9
Target:     4.8
Stop:       3.55
Reward/Risk Ratio: (4.80 - 3.9) / (3.9 - 3.55) = 2.57

I think this graph is more accurate than the one before IMHO

Any opinions???

great stuff phab! (applaud) I like how you used the risk reward ratio.  I think the play is solid  :)

Nice work, Phabrux.  Applause.

My chart is  a little different from yours.  You have a March high of 4.47.  I show a March 9 high of 4.68, but I could have bad data (Reuters).  On my chart, CDE broke above the November, 2004 - March, 2005 down trendline yesterday by a little bit more than one penny.

Pan American Silver (PAAS) had a similar breakout above its November, 2004 - March, 2005 down trendline on August 3.  You can see from the chart below, PAAS pulled back for a re-test of its Ascending Triangle breakout and for a re-test of its 200DMA, then headed higher Tuesday and yesterday.

From a search on CDE, I see that it showed up on David's exploration and filters on June 29 and July 11.  Yesterday, volume in CDE was higher than on both of those days, FWIW.

I like your 3.55 stop.  The up trendline of the Ascending Triangle was validated, so I view it as important support.  It comes in today, August 11, at 3.543.  It rises .01429 each day, so it will be 3.557 for August 12.   I wouldn't want to see a close below that trendline.

Thank you elitG and Melf_Elf for your kinds words.

Your comments are both very encouraging.

I enjoyed reading your chart Mel_Elf, and thanks for the info about PAAS.
It is nice to see that we all come up  with similar conclusions.

I love this generosity of details supply in your post to highlight the pattern hidding in the chart.
You do a great pedagogue, for those who are just stepping in to question how accurate could the TA be as a prediction tool.

Sorry for replying to yours posts so later but I was busy until  the end of the week!

Thanks, and I like the way you put that about patterns "hiding" in the chart.  Sometimes, I have to look at a chart for awhile to try to see different patterns that are "nested," or "hiding" within larger patterns.

CDE filled the breakaway gap yesterday, and put in a bullish hammer with the tail bouncing off the trendline re-test.  While I would have liked to have seen the gap left open, yesterday's candle looks fine.

If it doesn't take off higher from here, it might go back and test the Ascending Triangle breakout and fill single penny gap at 3.74 that wasn't quite filled when the Ascending Triangle broke out last week.

If we sell off/consolidate here, that would give the 50DMA time to making a bullish cross of the 200DMA.  The 50DMA (sorry, it's obscured by the purple up trendline) currently is at 3.57.  The 200DMA is at 3.76.

CDE had the same behaviour as GSS, opened on a gap up, breaking resistance, but couldn't hold on to those gains because there were a lot of people with big short term profits.

But, when it came down, it held $4.19, which was the previous resistance level, now support. So I think this advance phase for CDE will continue, I'm very bullish on gold and gold stocks and will continue to hold CDE for the foreseeable future.
Title: Re: I'm very bullish on GOLD #2: CDE
Post by: David Randolph on September 21, 2005, 07:02:09 AM
CDE is more linked to silver than gold, as we can read on this statement:

«Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation is the world's largest primary silver producer, as well as a significant, low-cost producer of gold. The Company has mining interests in Nevada, Idaho, Alaska, Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Australia.»

I'm also bullish on Silver long term, perhaps even more than on gold (the percentage return on silver will probably be bigger than on gold).

CDE's CEO will be speaking on Friday:

Coeur CEO to Speak at Silver Summit (http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/newsarticle.asp?siteid=mktw&sid=1275&guid=%7B15B305EE%2D393C%2D4138%2DB256%2D86071CA6B423%7D&symb=)

Technically the stock broke a descending trendline on the upside and now made a pullback to that trendline, previous resistance, now support. I will continue holding the stock.

Nice reaction to the new found support from CDE yesterday. Everything is fine on gold land.

CDE has the same consolidation pattern as other gold stocks that I own. No news or press releases to analize today. The technical picture suggests higher prices are coming for CDE.
Title: Re: I'm very bullish on GOLD #2: CDE
Post by: David Randolph on September 26, 2005, 06:18:29 AM
CDE has a much clear technical picture than GSS. There is a symmetrical triangle that was broken on the upside. Now the descending trendline is acting as support as it should.

On Friday CDE opened at support and then rebounded a bit by the close. Support for today will be standing at $4.02.

CDE's CEO will speak today at a conference as you can read here: Coeur CEO to Speak at Denver Gold Show (http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/newsarticle.asp?dist=&param=archive&siteid=mktw&guid=%7B29E97C55%2D6F45%2D4BCC%2DBBA7%2D046E944CA7B2%7D)

I wouldn't like to see CDE close below $4.02 today. Perhaps I could give the stock some more room, since it has an ascending trendline below and I'm very bullish on gold. But I feel I need to be specially cautious now and protect capital at all costs. So the plan is to sell if the stock is set to close below $4.02. I shouldn't, and I can't, let losses grow at this market juncture.

DENVER, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Coeur D'Alene Mines Corp. (CDE.N: Quote, Profile, Research) does not expect any problems with its permits or contracts for the key San Bartolome mine project in Bolivia despite recent political instability there, the company's chief executive said on Monday.

Gold stocks measured by the $XAU index failed to confirm the highs made by the gold price. Also I'm suspicious it's not inflation ahead, but deflation, as the economy slows from here.

I don't want to own anything gold related now, I'm selling CDE at the open for a negligible loss, I was wrong when I bought it !

I think I'll stay with them for a while -  ;D

This came out today:

Gold futures top $475 for first time in a week

September 29, 2005 10:02:18 (ET)

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Gold futures climbed above the $475-an-ounce level Thursday for the first time in a week as traders continued to eye developments in the energy and currency markets.

"The brief period of selling is behind us and the precious metals, with a little help from the dollar, are ready for blastoff," said Dale Doelling, chief market technician at Trends In Commodities.

Gold for December delivery climbed $1.90 to $475 an ounce on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Earlier, it hit an intraday high of $475.40. The gains following a nearly $7 climb in prices Wednesday.

All in all, "gold is going through a churning process to correct the over bought condition," said Ned Schmidt, editor of the Value View Gold Report.

"Spillover from energy concerns [is] also playing a role," he said, adding that "buyers should be watching rather than following the momentum speculators attempting to get into a market they missed."

Crude futures traded around $67 a barrel Thursday. Strength in oil often raises investment interest in gold because traders become concerned about inflation.

At the same time, the U.S. dollar was nearly flat against the Japanese yen, but strengthened a bit against the euro.

Elsewhere on Nymex Thursday, December silver climbed 6.7 cents to $7.47 an ounce, while December copper shed 0.7 cent to stand at $1.741 a pound. December palladium rose 10 cents to $201.40 an ounce and October platinum rose $4.50 to trade at $926 an ounce.

The "trend" for copper, gold and silver is "most definitely up," said Doelling. "Copper and gold have done well and I really think silver will eventually catch up. So, of these three markets, silver still looks to be the most compelling trade," he said.

Tracking inventories, copper supplies were down 115 short tons at 7,700 as of late Wednesday, according to Nymex. Silver stocks were up 157,479 troy ounces at 116.7 million, while gold inventories stood at 6.07 million troy ounces, up 31,022 troy ounces from the previous session.

Indexes tracking stocks in the metals-mining sector moved higher on the heels of Wednesday's strength.

The Amex Gold Bugs Index (HUI) tacked on 0.8% to trade at 245.38, with shares of Coeur d'Alene Mines (CDE, Trade) up 1.9%.

The CBOE Gold Index (GOX) traded at 102.32, up 1.1% and the Philadelphia Gold/Silver Index (XAU) rose 0.9% to stand at 113.28.

David:  would you consider today's $xau move enough of a confirmation?  would you consider re-entry into gold/silver?  You changed your analysis real quick on this one from "I'm very bullish on gold... I'd be losing not to own gold-related stocks here...I'm perhaps even more bullish on silver" to "I don't want own anything gold related anymore (not exact wording)."  pretty dramatic swing in opinion, don't you think?  I'm not sure where you are on this one.

Hi guys,

while I'm out of this one for now, am serioously considering getting back in, poss today or tomorrow.

So I thought I'd post a couple charts.  One is a long term (2 yr) weekly chart showing the narrowing ascending channel that broke out of a long term down trend in May.  The second shows the 6 month chart, which suggests that the ascending support has held well so far and is very steep - from 3.40 to 4.25 in a month!!

We are currently testing near 12 month highs at the resistance around 4.50. If it is broken, we could see some solid gains (well, most have allready seen some, I believe).  Keep an eye for a drop below the horizontal support line at 4.20, as this would also break the ascending support line, giving cause for conceern.

Good luck all.

Nice bounce today.
Could be key reversal day for CDE finally. Looking for this dog to push it on up !
While CDE is not doing much lately I still like the looks of the Cup with Handle
formation from Aug to Oct -- it's one of the signs that usually works out for
a stock. I think it's going to work for CDE, just taking more time to break
upwards. But when it does, it'll be heading up quickly. Have
patience, this is a potentially strong silver stock that will work out in the
next few weeks.

Coeur Shareholders Approve $1.1 Billion Merger with Bolnisi Gold and Palmarejo Silver and Gold, Creating World's Leading Silver Company
Transaction Expected to Close by Year-End

    COEUR D'ALENE, IDAHO, December 7 /CNW/ - Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation
(NYSE:CDE) (TSX:CDM) today announced that its shareholders have overwhelmingly
approved the proposals related to the acquisitions of Bolnisi Gold NL
(ASX:BSG) and Palmarejo Silver and Gold Corporation (TSX VENTURE:PJO) at a
Special Meeting held this afternoon in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.

"We are extremely pleased with the outcome of today's vote and the
addition to Coeur of the Palmarejo silver and gold project, which is expected
to increase company-wide silver production to nearly 30 million ounces by
2009, and at very low costs," said Dennis E. Wheeler, Coeur's Chairman,
President and Chief Executive Officer. "The addition of the Palmarejo project
to the company's existing asset mix will transform Coeur into a high-growth,
low-cost, long-life, and sustainable world-leading silver company with
exciting exploration potential. We would like to thank our shareholders for
their support and we look forward to delivering the benefits of this
transaction."

The final tabulation indicates that more than 88% of the shares voted
were cast in support of the proposals on which the company's shareholders were
asked to vote. Earlier this week, shareholders for both Bolnisi and Palmarejo
voted overwhelmingly in favor of the transaction.

As a result of this transaction, Coeur's Australian-listed CHESS
Depositary Interests (CDIs) (ASX:CXC) will be added to Australia 's S&P/ASX
200 indices.

The Palmarejo project is expected to begin production in early 2009 at an
annualized rate of approximately 10.4 million ounces of silver and 115,000
ounces of gold per year with cash costs, net of gold bi-product, of an
estimated ($0.41) per ounce of silver and an initial mine life of nine years.
Exploration continues on the large land package, with current measured and
indicated mineral resources of 88.7 million silver ounces and 1.0 million
measured and indicated gold ounces and an additional 61.4 million ounces of
inferred silver mineral resources and 0.7 million inferred gold ounces.

    About Coeur

Coeur d'Alene Mines Corporation is one of the world's leading primary

It will be interesting to watch how the Canadians play with this one... ;D   ;)

CALLS are tricky...
It'll be interesting to see what happens with those CALLS.

What I recently read which makes much sense is if, the stock
is low priced like CDE, one should really consider buying the stock rather
than the option. If the price differential is really not substantial, it's much
more prudent to put additional $$$ into buying the stock rather than the option
and don't worry about expiration, which catches most of us and we lose all $$$.
So even if you have to put in twice or even more $$$ to buy the stock outright,
it removes the expiration problem altogether and you can hold on forever.
Any stocks under $10 I'll buy fewer shares and forget the options. It's
a cruel marker with options.

JMHO...Accumulate
This stock is going much higher.
The merger go through.  Possible pop there,
however this would be a long-term position. Call it a 2008 play. A lot of Dec and Jan call interest at 5. Wouldn't be surprised to see those calls expire worthless. Think institutions were selling them to retail. So the stock could have a lid on it till February or at least till 5.
