Earnings lift Knight Capital 10%

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Knight Capital shares rallied more than 10% Thursday after the company posted a fourth-quarter profit that was almost four times what analysts had expected.

NITE10.70, +1.06, +11.0%) reported income of $41.9 million, or 41 cents a share, compared with $108.4 million, or 84 cents a share, in the fourth quarter of 2004. The year-ago quarter included $86 million in income from discontinued operations.

Analysts polled by Thomson First Call expected Knight to earn 11 cents a share, on average.

"A strong quarter pretty much any way you slice it," said Richard Repetto, an analyst at Sandler O'Neill, in a note to clients. He expected Knight to earn 12 cents a share.

He pointed to the company's equity-markets business and its investment in the Deephaven funds as drivers behind Knight's successful quarter.

"Of all the factors leading to the favorable results, our decision to dramatically boost automation in our broker-dealer operations mid-2005 had the greatest impact on profitability," said Thomas Joyce, chairman and CEO of Knight, in a statement.

Revenue improved to $201.3 million, compared with $185.6 million a year ago.

The equity-markets unit brought in $134.8 million of revenue, an increase of 6.5% from the fourth quarter of 2004. Operating earnings climbed to $23 million from $15.6 million a year ago.

Fees from asset management declined to $21.3 million, compared with $48.8 million a year ago. Earnings were $6.6 million, down from $22.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2004.

"We believe year-end redemptions drove a 10% decline in average assets under management to $3 billion," Repetto said.

The corporate segment reported a loss of $2.5 million. A year ago, it earned $258,000. The Deephaven funds helped temper the loss by contributing 3 cents a share to the corporate operation, Repetto noted. Without Deephaven, the segment would have lost 4 cents a share, he said.

Also Thursday, Knight reported a 10.3% decline in December average daily trades to 843,000 from 940,000 in December 2004. The average daily dollar value traded was $7.91 billion, which represents a 0.9% decline from $7.98 billion a year earlier. There was one less trading day in December 2005 than in December 2004.

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- Shares of Knight Capital Group Inc. rose as much as 20% in early trading Thursday, a rally touched off after the equity trade execution company announced better-than-expected first-quarter financial results.

NITE17.16, +2.78, +19.3%) gained $2.71 to stand at $17.06, setting a 52-week high at $17.23 shortly after the opening bell.
Knight Capital said first-quarter net income jumped to $49.1 million, or 47 cents a share, from $5.8 million, in the year-earlier period. Revenue for the latest quarter more than doubled to $276.5 million from $137.6 million.
The company said its profit was after charges of 5 cents a share related to real estate costs.
Analysts polled by Thomson First Call had, on average, been expecting earnings of 30 cents a share on revenue of $194 million.
The company said the results were partly due to increased automation in its broker-dealer operations since mid-2005, combined with good market conditions in the quarter.
Knight Capital added its board of directors has approved a $150 million increase in its share-buyback program, to $495 million.
Separately, the company said average dollar value traded in March was $8.29 billion, up about 9% from a year ago but off 7.1% from February 2006.

Lots of Cash........
This company is a top market maker in equities and seems poised for rapid growth.
Blow out revenue and earnings increase... At this clip they might do $1.88 or better for a year.NITE is way too cheap here regardless of what other brokerage stocks do. With earnings like NITE just posted

Knight Capital Group Inc. one of the largest traders of Nasdaq-listed shares, first-quarter profit surged, helped by increased automation and a strong market environment.
The New Jersey-based company, which last year changed its name from Knight Trading Group Inc., reported net income of $49.1 million, or 47 cents a share, up from $5.8 million, or 5 cents a share, a year earlier.

Excluding a charge of 5 cents a share related to costs associated with excess real estate capacity, earnings for the quarter were 52 cents a share. Analysts polled by Reuters Estimates, on average, expected 29 cents a share excluding one-time items.
Revenue more than doubled to $276.5 million.

Knight Capital Group to Acquire ValuBond Fixed Income Electronic Platform
Monday July 10, 6:15 am ET
All-cash acquisition expands Knight's fee-based electronic access solutions into the fixed income asset class

JERSEY CITY, N.J. and ATLANTA, July 10 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Knight Capital Group, Inc. (Nasdaq: NITE - News) today announced that it has agreed to acquire ValuBond, Inc., a privately held firm that provides electronic access and trade execution products for the fixed income market.

"Knight is excited to provide electronic access in the fixed income market for our clients through ValuBond," said Thomas M. Joyce, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Knight Capital Group. "Fixed income is a vast and growing asset class still largely untouched by automation within the broker-dealer space. However, multi-asset class diversification and technology trends are fueling demands by investors for the same fast, efficient trade execution in fixed income that they have come to expect in the equities market. We believe our clients will increasingly want to provide electronic access to fixed income, from the same platform that they can access other asset classes like equities and foreign exchange."

"Knight is the ideal partner for ValuBond," said John W. Pigott, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of ValuBond. "We look forward to uniting ValuBond's robust front-end trading applications and ECN with Knight's world- class trading infrastructure, broad footprint in the broker-dealer space, and similar unconflicted and client-centered strategy. Our clients will immediately benefit from our increased ability to offer real-time electronic trading. With Knight's support, ValuBond can better execute on its strategy of bringing electronic trading solutions to the fixed income market."

Atlanta-based ValuBond provides an electronic trading platform and trader and broker workstations for fixed income securities, as well as advanced trading technologies and infrastructure through its wholly owned subsidiary, ValuBond Securities, Inc. The firm's comprehensive fixed income technology helps streamline trading processes, increase efficiency, automate workflows and strengthen client relationships. ValuBond's technology solution includes live secondary trading of treasury, corporate, agency and municipal bonds, and it enables access to new issues, news, commentary and tools which may be privately labeled and fully integrated into a client's website.

"ValuBond, like Knight, has grown its business by focusing on client needs -- in ValuBond's case, customization, workflow efficiency and price transparency," said James P. Smyth, Senior Managing Director and Head of Knight's Broker-Dealer Client Group. "Furthermore, ValuBond's broker-dealer client base complements Knight's and opens up natural cross-selling opportunities which will propel both ValuBond's fixed income business and our current offering."

Knight agreed to acquire ValuBond in an all-cash deal for $18.2 million. The close of the transaction is subject to receipt of appropriate regulatory approvals and is expected to be completed within six months. Upon the close of the acquisition, ValuBond will operate as a separate subsidiary of Knight, and Mr. Pigott will report to Mr. Smyth. ValuBond has 18 employees. The acquisition is expected to be cash flow positive in 2007.

The advisers to Knight on the transaction are Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP. Advisors to ValuBond are Sparring Partners and Paul, Hastings, Janofsky & Walker LLP.

Very near taking out shelf of resistance from reverse head and shoulders in late April. Once we move above that level at the mid high 17's. I think this one will go straight to 19.50/22.50

Deephaven gains will boost Knight profit: analyst
Hedge fund firm had 'stellar' fourth quarter, Sandler O"Neill's Miller says

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- A "stellar" fourth quarter by Deephaven Capital Management will likely boost earnings of broker Knight Capital Group, which owns the $4 billion hedge fund firm, according to a report Wednesday by Sandler O'Neill analyst Betsy Miller.
Deephaven's event driven fund, its largest, returned roughly 2% in December, while its market neutral fund gained 2.7%, the analyst noted. That probably left Deephaven's hedge funds up roughly 6.5% overall during the fourth quarter.
In addition to annual management fees, hedge funds charge performance fees, which are usually 20% or more of annual portfolio gains. When returns are strong, that generates big profits for hedge fund owners.

21.48, +0.62, +3.0%) has contracts with Deephaven executives Colin Smith, Shailesh Vasundhra and Matthew Nunn that allow the broker to share roughly half to a quarter of the hedge fund firm's pre-tax earnings before profit sharing.
Fourth-quarter gains by Deephaven should add between 20 cents a share and 22 cents a share to Knight's earnings from that period, Sandler O'Neill's Miller said. During the third quarter, Deephaven's net return of 4.9% generated earnings per share of approximately 13 cents, she noted.
Miller lifted her quarterly profit estimate for Knight to 38 cents a share from 32 cents a share and her full-year estimate to $1.40 a share from $1.34 a share.
She reiterated her buy rating and increased her price target to $23 from $22 due to the effect of higher assets at Deephaven on her sum-of-the-parts valuation of Knight.
Knight is scheduled to release earnings on Jan. 18.
Knight shares slid 10 cents to $20.42 during afternoon trading on Wednesday.
