Title: MSPD - G spot breakout?
Post by: basonista on August 16, 2005, 09:48:43 PM
From what I understand of G-spots, it looks like we had a breakout today.

MSPD has been looked at on it's other spikes and David even considered it for the 3sof portfolio.  May be a good one to look at again....

I need to think fast and write this recommendation fast, because my time is running out before the opening bell. I will justify this trade better on my first update, after the close.

Basically, I have these motives to buy the stock at today's open:

1) Fundamentals are improving rapidly and the stock is undervalued: Mindspeed(R) Reports Fiscal 2005 Third Quarter Results; Delivers Revenues of $27.7 Million, Achieving High End of Company's Expectations (http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/newsarticle.asp?dist=&param=archive&siteid=mktw&guid=%7BEF04C4F2%2D5F90%2D4B90%2D9FA0%2DFBA3277E20BB%7D)

2) New brokerage firms are covering the company with buy ratings, and their clients will be attracted to the stock, as soon as it starts rising, as it's happening now: News Headlines about Mindspeed Technologies Inc (MSPD) (http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/news.asp?siteid=mktw&sid=1483859&property=sid&value=1483859&symb=mspd&doctype=2006)

3) The stock rose sharply on the earnings news but it wasn't technically ready to advance, came down a bit and consolidated those gains, and now it shot up to new short term highs (a G-Pattern, well, not a pure one but I guess eliteG won't mind me using his pattern in a distorted way  ;))

4) There's an important resistance at $1.81. In fact, very important. If the stock blows out that resistance you'll see a lot of technical guys jumping in. I believe the stock will achieve that in the upcoming days (possibly today), fundamentals and recommendations from brokerage houses will ensure that. Perhaps the real deal in terms of resistances was the one on the long term semi-log scale chart, which was broken on the upside yesterday !  8)

So I'm buying MSPD at today's open for the 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio, as usual, 6.66% of capital. Here are the short and long term charts:

I actually bought some of this stock a couple weeks ago at $1.52 on its first pop.  Saw it go up to high 1.60's, then was disappoined to see it trade in the low 1.40's for the next couple weeks.  Something told me to keep holding it, and I'm glad I did!  I hope this goes up higher for all of us.

Hi, Dav:

   Any update on this one?

Title: Re: Think fast: MSPD (MindSpeed)
Post by: David Randolph on August 18, 2005, 07:03:14 AM
Sure, here's the update on MSPD  :)

The $1.81 resistance level is probably going to break, but not without a fight as we saw yesterday. This still isn't the update where I'll go deep into the financials of this company, but just reading the last earnings report you get a good feeling about the turnaround in fundamentals that's taking place at MSPD.

If we get a close above $1.81, as I expect, the sky will clear for MSPD and a short term run to $2.14 will be granted. But then we'll see, the stock still needs to break $1.81, yesterday's session, with a recovery from the lows of the day was a good sign.

I bought in today at 1.66 thru  1.68...  I like the chart. The Elec-Semiconductor Mfg sector is in favor with investors, always a big positive. Cash flow turning positive. 2 Year High over $10. Institutions have been adding to positions. All a good sign!  We have a few more consolidation days and looking to see the uptrend continue.

We shall see!!!!

This is beginning to hurt. Under $1.60 I might have to exercise my mental stop.
Nothing wrong with this stock. Its just kind of risky buying at resistence and hoping it goes through it like I did.

Often the low volume pullbacks will revers near the 9-day EMA

This one is at $1.57 so if it gets there may be a good point to buy - watch for it black line

In general I don't like to buy break-out.

Instead, buying pull back at key support level is what I prefer.

VPHM ($9.8), BCON, RITA ($3.30), ELN ($8.20), CTTY ($9.00) etc are the ones bought at the right time and at the right price (key support level).

For break-out buy, once the price did not act as expected, exit quickly with small loss and re-enter it later on pull back. Otherwise, you have to take the pain even in short term for the losses.

Thanks for your posts  :)

I wasn't expecting this sell off on MDSP.

MindSpeed is such a beautiful name for a company to have that I'm starting to wonder about Peter Lynch's theory of not buying stocks with attractive names, instead look for company's with horrible names, that's where you'll find the bargains  :D

I was going to study the fundamentals of the company a bit deeply, but with this ugly reaction I won't do it anymore. You see, I'm a dangerous kind of trader, an idealist. To know the markets you need to know yourself, and sometimes protect your portfolio from yourself like it is needed now.

Suppose I read the financials of the company and find them terrific. Then it would be harder to sell at a reasonable loss if the stock turns south like it's turning, right? I prefer not to know, because one never knows, the reports and news might be great, but behind the scenes, at this time, bad things can be happening with the company and there's no way of knowing it, only in the next quarterly result presentation.

That's why there's only one thing I trust in the market: the market itself. The market always knows better and he's always right.

Ok, coming back to MSPD, this short term bearish move can be just a pullback to the original descending trendline breakout. But I'm afraid it isn't, I'm afraid my loss widens. I see a support just beneath today's close, which is $1.54. I don't want to see MSPD closing below that level or I'll be forced to sell. That would mean the $1.81 resistance level was more important than the descending trendline (though this was more subtle, and those usually are the most significant).

Thinking like this, I trust the market but I'm in control of the situation. I am able to stop playing when I please. I only play to win, so when losing, I walk away ... courage doesn't pay in the stock market, and besides, it takes a lot more courage and confidence to sell at a loss than to hold one.

Enough said, if the stock is set to close below $1.54 tomorrow I'll sell without hesitation, I hope the stock rebounds from this pullback to the descending trendline.

I have a 13dma of 1.51 and 50dma of 1.31. The last time the shareprice dipped under the 13dma it popped in two days to the 1.85 level. For it to hit the 13dma would require another down day giving us three in a row. It will either level off there and prepare for another jump continuing its uptrend or get caught consolidating for a longer period of time. Of course the worse case scenario is it will continue to dip on down through the 50dma, which for me is a no brainer. I do not anticipate this happening based on its recent behavior confirming an uptrend along with good fundamental changes in the company and  also the fact the company is in a hot sector.

I plan to hold if it drops through the 13dma,  double down, and see if we are due for another pop over the next couple of days, then make my call. I got in at a lower price than some so i can afford to wait this out a bit.

We shall see!!!!

So i don't mind another down day :) (at least it is followed by a nice white candle on monday)

That would mean the $1.81 resistance level was more important than the descending trendline (though this was more subtle, and those usually are the most significant).

MSPD reacted well to the retest to the descending trendline, with a 4.4% rise on Friday. Now the stock needs to runaway on the upside, because this support is no good, since it goes down a bit everyday. Support could never be broken and an investor in MSPD could keep on losing more and more money. So it's not wise to trust on descending support lines.

Considering this, my threshold needs to be an horizontal support ($1.54), and I use the descending trendline just for indications, not for a hold/sell decision making process.

The game is simple for MSPD: decisively break the $1.81 resistance level, or instead break the $1.54 horizontal support level. I'll hold as long as the stock closes above $1.54 and hope it eventually breaks $1.81 on the upside.

The entry was good as it bounced right at 9-day -- but the volume was tiny. The NASDAQ volume though was the lowest of the year. This stock has a history of consolidating many days on low volume before another volume surge.

The 9-day EMA is rising so it could be used as a stop to keep at least a gain.

If you look at it as a retracement/consolidation towards the opening of the big white candle.. (like it did before) than the volume was good. It's drying out.. like it has to in this pattern :)

I've enjoyed the volume increase yesterday on MSPD, although the candlestick was an undecided doji.

My business with MSPD is to wait for it to decide which way to go. The lower boundary is $1.54, the higher boundary is $1.81. The stock closed at $1.65 yesterday, so it's halfway either way. What's it going to be?

MSPD, with all it's MindSpeed, is the one who has the answer. I'm just a little fish in a shoal following all the other small fishes looking for food. I have no power over the ocean or predators.

It really looked like MSPD was going to break the $1.81 resistance level when it was up 14%, but unfortunately by the end of the session a wave of selling hit the general market and took MSPD with it.

I'm going to take a small loss in MSPD today. The stock failed again, volume is weaker at each long white candle, so less people (or less money) believes in the break of the resistance level.

Also I've turned bearish on the general market (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?topic=2411.0), so I'm willing to unload a good chunk of the 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio today.

with the volume hardly getting above average, the RSI going into oversold territory and the 200MA coming in (1,98 today) I don't think this will go further up without a consolidation period..

I'll wait for the stock to come down towards 1,63 - 1,65 .. if it does so on lowering volume.. i might pick it back up..

This was on 3StocksOnFire with a resistance of $1.81, currently at $2.13.  It looks like a stock which has bottomed and is gaining momentum on the upside.  The outlook has improved.

I researched the Income Statement, Balance Sheet and Statement of Cash Flows and everything looks pretty healthy.  Key note is that R&D is huge and without the R&D they would be very profitable.

Also, recent BOD election of a Time Warner Cable exec. looks very interesting.  Time Warner Cable is among other things a large content provider.

Looks at where the 200 DMA is in relation to the current price.

Press Release:

Mindspeed Raises Fourth-Quarter Outlook

Mindspeed Substantially Hikes Fourth-Quarter Sales Guidance on Increasing Demand

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- Semiconductor maker Mindspeed Technologies Inc. hiked its quarterly sales outlook on Tuesday, saying sales will increase as much as 12 percent from the third quarter because of continuing high demand.

The company's shares jumped 12.6 percent to $2.15 in premarket trading on the report.

For the fiscal fourth quarter ending Sept. 30, Mindspeed predicted sales growth of 8 percent to 12 percent over the third quarter -- significantly above the 5 percent to 10 percent increase the company forecast in July.

Mindspeed posted sales of $27.7 million in the third quarter, putting the new forecast at $29.9 million to $31 million. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial are looking for revenue of $29.8 million.

"The pickup in demand we experienced during our third fiscal quarter continued through July and August across the majority of our product families and we believe conditions are continuing to improve worldwide for the end markets we serve," Chief Executive Raouf Halim said in a statement. "At this point in the fourth quarter, we are on track to exceed $30 million in revenue."

Last week, fellow chipmaker Texas Instruments raised its outlook for the quarter and Intel narrowed its guidance around the same revenue midpoint.

This stock hit 2.38 today already, much higher than I expected this soon.  I will probably sell before earnings, because I expect the stock to run to the mid 2's, perhaps nearing $3 before earnings, then fall back to where it is now right after earnings.

Anyone else agree with that, or am I missing something?

Thanks,

Heavy institutional buying in previous quarter.  Looks like supply is drying up and demand for the stock increasing, as news comes out about the success of it's Comcerto(TM) Processors.

Let's hope so!  I'm still holding this stock, but was tempted to sell it a couple times earlier this week.  I'm glad I didn't!  My emotions told me to sell, but the charts and indicators told me to hold, so I did.  I'm trying to break the bad habit of trading on emotions, but rather on charts and technicals.  Emotions will get you every time.

I'm out at 2.27 today.  Stock is acting a little bearish.  High volume, down 8% on no news.  Looks like someone knows something, but I can't be sure of that.  But I enjoyed the run from 1.52.  No one ever got hurt taking a profit!

October 24, 2005 16:30:01 (ET)

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Oct 24, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Mindspeed Technologies Inc. (MSPD, Trade), a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, today announced revenues of $31.1 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005, which ended Sept. 30, 2005, up 12 percent over the $27.7 million reported in the third quarter of fiscal 2005, achieving the high end of its revised expectations of approximately 8-to-12 percent sequential quarterly revenue growth.

Revenues from multiservice access voice-over-IP (VoIP) solutions declined 1 percent sequentially over the prior quarter, contributing 28 percent of total fourth quarter revenues. Revenues from high-performance analog devices grew 3 percent sequentially and represented 23 percent of total quarterly revenues. Revenues from WAN communications products, including T/E carrier transmission devices and ATM/MPLS network processor solutions, increased 27 percent sequentially to 49 percent of total quarterly revenues.

"We are very pleased to have achieved the high end of our revenue expectations in the fourth fiscal quarter of 2005," said Raouf Halim, Mindspeed's chief executive officer. "Most important, we made significant progress on our path to profitability, reducing our pro forma operating loss by 44 percent to $4.5 million. Our book-to-bill ratio improved over the prior quarter and conditions continued to strengthen worldwide for our end markets."

Gross margin for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005 was $21.9 million, or 70 percent of revenues. Mindspeed's pro forma operating loss for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005 was $4.5 million, a reduction of 44 percent from the pro forma operating loss of $8 million reported in the third quarter of fiscal 2005. Presented on a GAAP basis, Mindspeed's operating loss for the fourth quarter was $4.6 million, as compared to $8.7 million in the prior quarter.

Mindspeed's pro forma net loss for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005 was $4.1 million, or $0.04 per share, based on approximately 103.2 million average shares outstanding, compared to the pro forma net loss of $8.8 million, or $0.09 per share, in the prior quarter based on approximately 102.7 million average shares outstanding. Presented on a GAAP basis, the net loss for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005 was $4.3 million, or $0.04 per share, compared to $9.5 million, or $0.09 per share in the prior quarter. Combined cash and marketable securities totaled $56.3 million at Sept. 30, 2005.

As described below, the pro forma results, which are a supplement to financial results based on generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), exclude amortization of intangible assets and special items. Mindspeed uses pro forma information to evaluate its operating performance and believes this presentation provides investors with additional insight into underlying operating results by excluding amortization of intangible assets and the effects of special items which include restructuring charges, asset impairments and other significant discrete items that may not be indicative of Mindspeed's core operating results. Cash consumption is the net increase (decrease) in cash and cash equivalents excluding the sale of convertible senior notes, deferred financing costs and purchases and sales of marketable securities. These measures provide an operating perspective not immediately apparent from GAAP operating loss or net loss. In addition, Mindspeed has historically reported similar financial measures and believes that the inclusion of comparative numbers provides consistency in its financial reporting. These measures of earnings and cash flows are not in accordance with, or an alternative for, GAAP and may be different from pro forma measures used by other companies. A reconciliation of the pro forma and GAAP results is included in the accompanying financial data.

Outlook

"Looking ahead to our current first quarter of fiscal 2006, we believe that our voice-over-IP and high-performance analog businesses are both poised to drive our growth this quarter. In fact, our current backlog for these businesses is significantly higher than what it was at this point in the fourth quarter," Halim said.

Mindspeed expects first-quarter fiscal 2006 revenues to be up approximately 5-to-8 percent sequentially. The company expects overall gross margin to be approximately 69 percent and expects quarterly pro forma operating expenses to be approximately $26 million. As a result, Mindspeed expects its fiscal 2006 first quarter pro forma operating loss to be approximately $3 million, an improvement of 30 percent sequentially over the fourth quarter of fiscal 2005, and to reduce its cash consumption.

Nice run - I missed it this time - several times had it near 2 and it failed at 2.20ish so I sold then would buy back but forgot about it this last week..

Oh well with so many stocks breaking out there is not enough money to play them all anyway. That VTSS was in the same group in the past and it is great this week and today ZIXI that had bounced form trend shot up 20% on news and BTUI took off and SUNW broke out as well as DIET. GBVS which has been super up about 10 days finally today pulled back and got to 1.25 then reversed and there was time to get in and it ran up 45% then on second test only went to maybe 1.30ish and ran to 1.70 so amazing action. Things breaking out all over. Should be some pullbacks but hopefully this action will bring the bears for the sidelines for some spike high in the indexes as the major ones are already at all time highs so they will at some point make a top. While it lasts is is sure great.

Title: Semiconductor Earnings Run #1: MSPD
Post by: eliteG on April 07, 2006, 12:22:39 AM
MSPD - Mindspeed Technologies Inc.

Sector:    Technology
Industry:    Semiconductor Equipment & Materials
Mkt Cap:       444.80 Million

Profile: Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. engages in the design, development, and sale of semiconductor networking solutions for communications applications in enterprise, access, metropolitan, and wide-area networks (WANs).

website: http://www.mindspeed.com/web/home.jsp

Reason for the trade:

- Technical breakout with volume(charts below).
- Support close by.. able to place tight stop.
- Earnings Run Trend(April 24)
- Semiconductor sector may be getting strong again.
- Qtr revenue growth seems strong.
- Company has a cool name.

So the main reason this trade even popped up into the possibility of being in 3SOF is that it had a technical breakout.  The reason we have selected it is because we are 2.5 weeks out from earnings and there is a trend called "Earnings Run" where a stock will run into its earnings 2-3 weeks out.  We are smack dab in the middle with 2.5 weeks out and the semiconductors are looking strong(although this is a semi/networking play).  There is some gap resistance above but we are willing to bet MSPD can deal with that.  We will not be holding through earnings!  Also affecting my decision here was that the company has a cool name and I want to be able to say I own Mindspeed Technologies.  :D

We will buy MSPD @ market open.

Tuesday 4/4/06 Cramer's quote:
"I WOULD GO INTO CNXT OR MSPD.  WHY CNXT?  BECAUSE MERRILL RECOMMENDED IT TODAY.  WHY MSPD?  BECAUSE OF PCMS' ACQUISITION AFTER THE CLOSE.  THAT'S A LOT OF INFO!

BUT I AM GOING TO REFERENCE THE PREVIOUS TWO JEWELS OF CNXT AND MSPD.  I THINK THAT, RIGHT NOW, THEY'RE MORE VALUABLE THAN FNSR AND AVNX, BUT I LIKE THE WHOLE LOT - YOU'VE GOT FOUR OF A KIND - FOUR ACES!"

Totally agreed that semi and tech will have a run in April during earning release.

Look at our previous picks:

ASTSF - $10.21 already break-ouit big ($9.80 and next resistance $15 is far away)
ATML - $5.20 break-out big yesterday ($5.00)
SUNW - about to break-out (previous highs $5.50 - $5.75)
CNXT - broke-out $3.60 few days ago
TMTA - about to break-out at $2.20

TRAD - correction finished and will start the run again.

.......

I can say that DAVID picks are most good but the timming happened to be wrong - after big run and need to have a correction.

You are absolutely right Setravis... Sometimes this is my problem too, getting out from a stock so early & missing the BIG chunks of profits... & i'm happy i'm learning now, I'm following & combining some indicators that will make me stay in the trade in the first place & not to get out too soon & this is the "13 day EMA WEEKLY" .... the most important of this Trend Following Indicator (EMA13) is the slope, it pays to go LONG when this slope is up & go Short/or take profits when this slope is turning down. But you have to analyze the 13 EMA in the weekly charts, In this way your perspective will be five times greater than that of your competitors.

Goodluck!! ;)
Title: Re: MSPD

ATML is another example of this, I bought ATML the time David made a call in the 3Fast Portfolio @ around 2.30 if i'm not mistaken.

As you can see the 13 day EMA still rising on the WEEKLY Chart... that was a very LOUD call to hold ATML ;)

I have to put this one in my head, the most important of the 13 Day EMA is the SLOPE (it is a very simple indeed)...TRADE with THE DIRECTION OF THE SLOPE... & Hold until not turning down ;)
Title: Re: MSPD

Another one example is NVAX... I first bought NVAX around $1.50 but then sold again too early...a mistake that I needed to learn.

You see.. NVAX weekly EMA13 still pointing up this baby will rally soon again & will beat the latest high ;)

Again, weekly MACD-Histogram (this is an Indicator that i'm using with weekly EMA13) managed to stay @ positive side.

update MSPD:

Impressive.  Holding a gain on the market and semi sell off Friday is most impressive.  Support is in place now for MSPD to continue this rise.  Lets make sure we have an exit plan if things dont go our way.

We will hold MSPD unless it closes below 3.8.

------
Position: bought MSPD @ 4.28 on 4/07/2006
Order: Hold
Exit: on close below 3.8
Target: n/a

I guess on these ones where we sell on close I should not set a stop loss. :'(

I just got back home and saw the notification. I was also stopeed out at 3.80. :-\.

I know the order was "sell if closes below 3.80"

Some of us cannot be in monitoring the position all day long and cannot get to it until after the close. Then we might need to set a wider stop loss with an additional instructions to sell in case we close below a certain price. Just a thought.
thanks,

Also I would prefer a standard stop recommendation rather than "hold, unless it is set to close below..." or "hold, unless it closes below..."

Wasn't 3SOF supposed to work in way that you could read the daily update in the morning, place and modify your orders and triggers as necessary, and then be free for the rest of day? That's what attracted me to 3SOF in the first place and I believe it used to be like that in the past, until eliteG joined the team.

Of the 10 open trades with stop recommendations, 3 are moderated by Ramsburg and all 3 have a standard stop recommendation. The other 7 are moderated by eliteG and they all have the "unless it is set to close below..." or "unless it closes below..." recommendation.

I do hope that G will give this some thought. If 3SOF was able to make 195% in less than a year with standard stops, it should hopefully not be necessary to complicate our trading procedures.

3SOF did not have standard stops. David also used the term if it is set to close...

I've read G's instruction 'sell after close below...' as if it closes below the mentioned price they will sell in the morning.

I think that's also what he explained.

If there has been an explanation, I haven't seen it but I am a recent subscriber.

However, I have not yet seen a "sell after close below..." recommendation. What I have seen is "hold, unless it closes below...". You may say that this is exactly the same, but see how another member interprets it, in the XRTX thread:

Quote from: netfishmademerich on April 11, 2006, 04:15:53 PMstop on close is the best strategy because irratic intraday price movements can throw you out of a stock unnecessarily.

Also you can't wait until tomorrow to sell because sometimes the stock will gap down next day, then you'd have to guess if the price will come up to the gap for you to bail, or not.

"Unless it is set to close below..." and "unless it closes below..." are not very precise recommendations and it can make quite some difference in your selling price, i.e. your loss, whether you sell at 3.48 p.m., at 3.58 p.m., or at the open the following trading day.

Quote from: Amarens on April 11, 2006, 03:50:47 PM3SOF did not have standard stops.

I am quite new here and all I know is that all of Ramsburg's currently open trades, including those he took over from David, have standard stop recommendations:

"Hold EZM with a stop @ $1.52"
"Hold GNA with a stop @ $8.80"
"Hold XING with a stop @ $8.35"

Recommendations of this type allow me to enter what Ameritrade calls a "stop market" order at the indicated price, and then I can forget about it except to update the stop when recommended.

I haven't reviewed many of David's recommendations but from what I have seen he used to post, after the close, recommendations like "sell GIGM at today's open" after a price had fallen. With such recommendation, one can enter a sell order at market, which will then be filled at the open.

Amarens, just now I realised that you are right. My apologies.

I now see, using MSPD as an example, that if the stock closes below 3.80 on any day, then on the following morning I should place a sell order at market, which will then be filled at the open. No need for me to sit in front of the computer and watch the price movement toward the close. And, of course, I need to read the daily updates to see if there is a recommendation to adjust the on-close stop.

The chip market in general has been a mess the last few days with negative sentiment coming from some big inst's, i have lost my ass here buying some $70,000 worth of shares between MSPD and  TQNT, I didn't sell as it didn't close below $3.80.

We need some very carefull guidence right now from 3sof considering the market move in general wth semi's today. is the downtrend going to continue or will we see an end to this blood bath tomorrow

Hello,

I also misunderstood the selling procedures. My mistake!!!

Concerning MSPD, I should've had a wider stop below the 50 MA this way I would have protected my position in case of a retracement like the one we had today and G's recommendation.

I also hold a position in CNXT which had a similar retracement. My stop below the 50 MA kept my position alive. Hopefully tomorrow it will bounce back up.

Oh well, we learn something new everyday.

Aaren's, just now I realised that you are right. My apologies.

Thanks  :) , but I don't think I was either  :D.

The misunderstanding comes from before. G in the meantime changed his wording into 'unless it is set to close below...'. In case of MSPD $ 3,80. In that case I think we can differ is $ 3,82 set to close below... 3SOF decided not and kept MSPD so did I. Today we'll know whether that was a good decision  :-\

G used to word instructions also as 'unless it closes below...' That meant selling the next day at the open. That's not used anymore.

Anyway it's hard to give instructions when it's so close to a critical price. A stop (which Ramsburg indeed uses. David hardly ever did in the past) is clear, but can have you being stopped out during the day when you did not want to based on the close. Not being able to watch 15 min. before the close is hard with these instructions. Maybe 3SOF together with all of us can think of a solution  ??? ???

G, maybe 3SOF can answer how you look at "set to close below..." Sometimes it just bounces down in the last minute and one can't sell anymore. What is your trigger. This might help some of us.

Maestro, great trading.

Hey guys.. I've been reading this but I'm confused as to where the confusion is?  We have a:

We will hold MSPD unless it closes below 3.8.

This condition was not fulfilled?  The only way to evaluate this condition is after market close.. the idea would be to sell the next morning  ;) but we would always update our order if we are selling first anyway.. so this sell condition is really <<hold but evaluate a sell on close data>>.

Of course not everyone follows this and feels safer with a stop.  Thats ok but we trade the way we plan  :)  I hope this answers your questions.  We do not set a <<sell if set to close>> anymore.. so no issue there.

G,

Confusion comes from you email instruction letter. I just found out. I was sure I read what you just said but that is on the thread. In the email letter (also one from today) it says:

MSPD - HOLD, unless it is set to close below $3.80

That's where the confusion is from...wording needs to be changed there still. I knew it meant selling the next day b/c of another thread where we had this confusion before.

Hope this helps  ;)

I am happy about that and, having recognised and cleared up my earlier confusion, this makes my life easier. It's not that I am lazy – most days I would be free to watch the close at 4 p.m. ET (9 p.m. my time when I am in England, 10 p.m. when in Switzerland, 4 a.m. when in Thailand) – but I am completely hopeless at stock analysis, technical, fundamental or otherwise, and I got burnt far too often in the past because of my inability to choose a suitable exit point.

Therefore, I have to rely on others and for this year I have chosen 3SOF, accepting that all information posted are merely recommendations and the decisions will remain my responsibility alone, win or lose.

MSPD, the semis and the market all moved heavily downward.  It is time to sell.  The timing on this earnings run was off.  I tried to catch a semiconductor rally before there was one  :-X.. lesson learned(price = ow).  At this point MSPD can very well break its 50ma and move lower.

No complaints from me. I signed up to the premium service on 20 March this year and after today's sale of MSPD and NMKT my portfolio, including cash balance, is at the moment still up 2.6%. As time passes and more stocks get into my 3SOF portfolio, the increase will probably get higher. If it goes down, I blame nobody, if it goes up, I give credit to the lads of the 3SOF team.

Another portfolio, handled by a professional investment consultant, increased 17.1 % last year, while this web site reports a gain of 194% for the 3SOF portfolio since 28 April 2005. My conclusion: I could do worse than paying heed to the recommendations given on the 3SOF board.

You know it's your own plan you should follow. On avarage I'm happy. Love this community and all I'm learning. If I could I would applaud all right now  :).

I've decided to step out of TQNT didn't like the charts anymore. Stil undecided on MSPD. The chart (mine  ;)) shows that as long as MSPD closes above the TL, which stands at $ 3,67 today, it's okay in my opinion. So I'm going to sit today out and look 30 min. before closing.

I got out of MSPD a few days back and I posted it to the board.  I think the stock is okay at this level but for the portfolio the entry was not too good.  With an entry of $4.28 it will be a while before it can break even, especially now that it will encounter a few resistence points before that price.  Keep an eye on the weekly candle.

I think for TQNT, if you decide to hold watch for close under $5, similarly with CPST which the 3SOF portfolio will still be holding, I'd be wary with a close under $4.  These are supposd to be mo-stocks, so watch the mo.

Just a comment. I can understand selling MSPD according to plan (close below 3.80), but the rationale for selling TQNT before it either went up or reached the stop of $4.80 is inexplicable to me, especially in the light of today's action. Both stocks moved up. What happened to plan the trade, trade the plan?

I pay to get advice that I could not give myself. Otherwise, why be a member. So I rely on it to be well-considered. I am not certain it was. So, please don't come down too hard on someone, who lost alot of money on today's advice. I did not sell, by the way. Probably dumb luck, but.......

Question: What is the level of sophistication that is required to use the recommendations on this site with some independence?

Bobbi - I understand your concern.

A reason for a sell in the portfolio is always given.  In this case check the TQNT thread: http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?topic=5113.0

The original reason for the buy was compromised(A semiconductor rally) therefore the plan must be adjusted to compensate.  Managing a portfolio(one with 15 hot positions) is like working in a garden.  We try to sow the best seeds(picks) but can not control the sun and rain(the market).  We try to give our flourishing plants room to grow and must always take out the weeds.

The 3SOF team have been successful gardeners for quite some time.  This does not mean we are always right but we usually have a good harvest.

We consider it our #1 job to find the members here opportunity(great stock picks).  The portfolio trading strategy is designed for a portfolio divided into 15 slots(taking on 6.66% risk of capital max).  We know that our members may trade differently than we do.. but our results speak for themselves.  Last I checked we are over 230%.

So to sum up.. the 3SOF team is proud of our performance.  Much work, experience and deliberation goes into making our selections and decisions.  It hurts to hear members losing money on a pick but of course that is part of the stock market.  Please take the time to browse through our closed trades and look at our current winners.

Thanks, G, for your kind reply. I really appreciate it. Both the content, the metaphor and the civility. Just what I've come to expect from 3stocks.

One thing I've noticed is that occasionally a choice will be made, doesn't appear to pan out, a sell recommendation given, and soon that stock moves up. So, the choice was good, the timing off. For example, I have been trading Canwest Pete (CWPT) for months. It was one of David Randolph's choice.

In any case, from a trader's point of view, (or a baby trader like me), do I just let it go and go on to the next thing, putting it on a watch list?

Thank you again for your response!

This is one of the most toughest things to learn.  It's important to be able to let stocks go because your timing is off.. no matter how great they are.  Just keep them on your list and you will be able to pick them up when they do move.  Bottom line:  Your analysis is only right if the market agrees with you..period.

BULL FLAG BREAKOUT:

MSPD had a Bull Flag breakout on March 21, putting Target: 4.55 IN PLAY unless/until the stock closes back below the breakout, or unless/until the stock completes a bearish chart pattern.

MSPD got only to 4.37, at which time (April 6, 7 and 10) it put in a 3-day Bearish Evening Star candlestick pattern.  That wasn't a bearish chart pattern, but it was a bearish candlestick pattern, and a warning.

BEARISH HEAD AND SHOULDERS TOP:

April 17, MSPD closed below the neckline (3.74 - 3.75) of a H&S Top.  As a result:

1. The bearishness of the April 6, 7 and 10 Evening Star Pattern is confirmed.

2. The Bull Flag target of 4.55 is CANCELLED because a bearish pattern completed, which put a bearish target of 3.13 IN PLAY.

3. It would appear, in Elliott Wave parlance, that the rally to the high of 4.37, might have been a "truncated" Wave 5 rally, "truncated" meaning that the rally got "cut off" prior to achieving the target of 4.55 that was IN PLAY.

BULL TRAP RALLY:

Once the neckline (3.74 - 3.75) was broken and closed below, on April 17, MSPD "shouldn't" have been able to get back above the high of the Right Shoulder, which was 3.95.  A print of 3.96, and especially a close above 3.96, would suggest that the breakdown of the H&S Top was a "false breakdown."

MSPD did just that.

It not only rallied above 3.95, it closed at 3.96 on April 19.  That put the H&S Top target: 3.13 ON HOLD because that looked bullish for MSPD to be able to close above the Right Shoulder.

Shorts are inclined to cover on a close like that, and longs feel more confident about their long postions, so BOTH groups take bullish action: cover shorts, and take long positions.  Obviously, neither group wants to see MSPD close back below the 3.74 - 3.75  neckline.

MSPD did just that.

BULL TRAP IS SPRUNG:

Yesterday, April 24, MSPD closed back below the neckline (3.74 - 3.75) of the H&S Top on fairly heavy volume.

BOTH shorts, who covered the print or close of 3.96, and longs who took new positions at 3.96 are "trapped" there, because they thought it was bullish to close at 3.96.  As the chart stands,  it wasn't.

Thus, a "bull trap."

The H&S Top target: 3.13 is back IN PLAY unless/until MSPD closes back above the neckline (3.74 - 3.75) of the H&S Top.

If MSPD can close above 4.01, the Bull Trap scenario is negated.

Mindspeed Narrows 2Q Loss
Monday April 24, 5:35 pm ET
Mindspeed Narrows Second-Quarter Loss; Sees Third-Quarter Operating Profit

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. (AP) -- Mindspeed Technologies Inc., a maker of network processors and routers, said on Monday it narrowed its second-quarter loss, and it expects to achieve an operating profit in the third quarter.

Net loss for the quarter was $7.1 million, or 7 cents per share, narrowed from a loss of $18.4 million, or 18 cents per share, last year. Excluding expenses, the second-quarter loss was $4.3 million, or 4 cents per share. Revenue for the quarter was $34.6 million, up 30 percent from $26.6 million last year.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected the company to report, on average, a loss of 3 cents per share on $34.57 million in revenue.

Looking forward, the company said it expects a 2 percent to 5 percent sequential increase in revenue -- implying third-quarter sales of $35.3 million to $36.3 million. Analysts expect the company to report $36.9 million in revenue.

Mindspeed also said it expects to achieve an operating profit, excluding unusual charges and expenses, for the third quarter.

"We believe that we will achieve operating profitability on a non-GAAP basis in our current third fiscal quarter. This is based on expected strong revenue growth from our VoIP products combined with operating expense reductions, including a modest restructuring as well as several nonrecurring cost-saving measures," Raouf Halim, chief executive, said in a prepared statement.

Shares of Mindspeed were trading at $3.40 in the extended session, down 25 cents, or 3.40 percent, from Monday's closing price of $3.65 on the Nasdaq.

MSPD: WR Hambrecht Cuts to Hold from Buy; Analyst Notes
Tuesday , April 25, 2006 09:23 ET
Issuer: Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (NasdaqNM: MSPD)
Analyst Firm:  WR Hambrecht
Ratings Action: DOWNGRADE

Current Rating: Hold (from Buy)
Analyst Comments: MSPD has reported disappointing CQ1 EPS of a loss of (4c) vs. the firm's estimate and the Street of (2c) on revenue of $34.6M (4.2% Q/Q growth) vs. their estimate and the Street of $35M. The company provided a disappointing outlook of 2-5% revenue growth, below the firm's estimate of 6%. They are downgrading the stock for the following reasons: 1) in the near-term, they believe there is a lack of catalyst due to the disappointing revenue guidance; 2) while the inventory issue is related to one major customer, they recommend investors take a cautious approach until we see further visibility with regards to the channel; 3) despite that the back-end test and packaging issues are under control, they believe this could lead to limited upside revenue guidance in the H2 and 4) the stock is fairly close to previous $4.00 price target and with the reduced annual revenue estimates following the earning release, they believe the stock is fairly valued at these levels.

Indeed Setravis, I suppose I shoud be happy with that kinda volume, just as long as it continues ;)

Things look to be lining up nicely for MSPD, with the break out from the descending channel, but got stopped on Monday just below 2.00.  Actually I thought MSPD held up pretty well yesterday in spite of the general market sell off and I like the look of this setup and since I didn't buy on Monday, I took yesterday's small pullback as an opportunity to open a position.

Obviously, 2.00 is immediate resistance, and it may need a bit of power to break through there, but I like how both the 50SMA and 13EMA are turning up, and the BBs are widening with price pushing outside the envelope - often suggestive of the beginning of a powerful move.  I am looking for a short term target (1 week) of next resistance at 2.25, provided it breaks above 2.00.  Stop (mental) will be a close below 1.80, which would have represented a much nicer risk/reward had I bough Monday, but I can live with it for now.

Good trading!

MSPD, Mindspeed (NAS), trading above 2, has broken out of a 5 month base. The volume is not impressive, though the MACD has been indicating an impending rally.

However, keep in mind that the company is not growing its top line, it is still losing a great deal of money and it is knee-deep in debt. I bring it up for those who are more risk-tolerant than me.

In the interest of full disclosure, I decided not to play the breakout, for the reasons stated above. I don't know how far it can move but I didn't think it was worth rolling the dice.

What I WAS buying until yesterday (now it's 10c higher) was GRSR (The Dutch Girasolar, soon moving to the BB from the pinks), one of the most intriguing solar micro plays out there.

MSPD $0.6 will be a big gainer next week . It will report record earnings AH tomorrow 4/21 AH

The recent pre-announcement below lifted the stock 25%. The stock is back down to prior pre-announcement levels. I expect an even larger and more sustained increase when the official numbers are announced on 4/21/2008.

The $36.2M that will be reported next week will be 16% higher than the same quarter last year and the bottom line significantly better with non-GAAP profitability and positive cash flow. Guidance is expected to be strong because of the several contracts recently won by the company. Ironically, the stock is a lot stronger than at this time last year when it was trading above $2.

The average analysts' target price is $2.04

Here is the April 8, pre-announcement:

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif., Apr 08, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Mindspeed Technologies, Inc. (MSPD, Trade ), a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, today announced the world's first 288x288 asynchronous non-blocking crosspoint switch. The M21170 switch provides an unprecedented 82,944 unique switching paths in a single, monolithic integrated circuit (IC), and will enable a new generation of significantly larger serial data switches such as those used by broadcast video and optical transport networks.

Mindspeed(R) will be demonstrating its M21170 crosspoint switch at the NAB Show in Las Vegas, Nev., April 12 through April 15, 2010, in the company's booth, #N408, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

The most common switching devices used in large routers to date have been 144x144 crosspoint switches. Mindspeed's M21170 uses a single chip to create a 288x288 non-blocking matrix for a router's switching core, replacing four cascaded 144x144 crosspoints required to achieve the same number of inputs and outputs. This method significantly reduces the size, cost and complexity of today's largest switchers. Mindspeed's quadrupling of the core matrix will double this available switching capacity, enabling users to route significantly higher numbers of serial data streams.

Crosspoint Switches used in Video Broadcast Industry

In recent years, the technological advances in the delivery of streaming live and pre-recorded video through a variety of media has allowed consumers to access video programming of their choice anywhere and anytime. This has sharply increased the demand for more content, which must be generated, routed and distributed within a television station, and requires larger and more complex switchers capable of routing very large numbers of video signals. Achieving such large routing switcher sizes was previously impossible, as legacy solutions required an unmanageable number of cascaded 144x144 crosspoints. The M21170 will enable equipment manufacturers to meet this growing market demand by simplifying the design of very large matrix video broadcast routing switchers used by networks, local broadcasters, cable and telecommunications service providers, mobile production companies and other organizations.

"Having used Mindspeed's broad line of industry-leading crosspoints in many of our products, we are very excited to see Mindspeed's continued investment and innovation in providing switching solutions for the broadcast market," said Rakesh Patel, chief technology officer at Evertz Microsystems Ltd. "The new 288x288 device, the first of its kind, has the potential to dramatically improve equipment design while enabling a new generation of flexible, large scale, high performance routers. As total functional density continues to increase, technologies such as the new 288x288 device are essential for allowing us to improve performance, increase per RU port count, and equally as important: Reduce Power Consumption. We are excited at being able to harness this technology to provide the broadcast market with new and innovative routing solutions."

"This is a major milestone for the video broadcast industry, on the road to significantly larger, more capable multi-format SD and HD switchers," said Kurt Busch, senior vice president and general manager of Mindspeed's high-performance analog business unit. "A few years ago, a 256x256 routing switcher was considered very large; now, 512x512 and 576x576 switchers are in hot demand, and broadcasters are asking for even larger switches. The size of these large routers is limited only by the size of the switching core, and now manufacturers can replace up to four cascaded 144x144 crosspoints with a single 288x288 solution. With this introduction, Mindspeed offers the industry's broadest crosspoint portfolio, all the way from 2x2 devices to the world's largest non-blocking switch."

According to WinterGreen Research, the markets for crosspoint switches are expected to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 27 percent to $2.98 billion by 2015. "Some applications are relatively recession-proof, including high-speed video applications," said Susan Eustis, president, WinterGreen Research. "The video segment is expected to remain strong even in the global downturn, and drive demand for crosspoint switches."

Crosspoint Switches used in Optical Transport and Switching

Crosspoint switches offer a very efficient foundation on which to implement circuit switched backplanes. These backplanes are composed of hundreds of high speed serial links such as those found in today's highest performance Optical Transport Networks (OTN) / Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (DWDM) systems.

On a per channel basis, circuit switch implementations typically cost about one third of packet switched ones. According to Infonetics Research, WDM bandwidth is expected to double by 2013, thereby greatly increasing the demand for larger crosspoint switches used in that segment. By using Mindspeed crosspoint switches, system manufactures can design products that are not only cost effective, but also deliver high performance and scalable solutions to meet the requirements of the most demanding service provider.

Technical Details

Each switching path in the M21170 can operate independently at any data rate of up to 3.2 Gbps, allowing for multi-rate routing and switching in a single device. The crosspoint also uses Mindspeed's proven signal-conditioning technology to compensate for signal losses that typically accumulate across the extended trace lengths of very large systems. Mindspeed's signal-conditioning technology provides a robust, easy-to-implement solution that includes input equalization for multiple data rates and various trace lengths up to 40 inches, as well as output pre-emphasis. These and other M21170 features ideally suit the crosspoint device for a broad range of switching applications, including SD/HD/3G-SDI routers for broadcast video and OTN switches for telecom service provider networks, both of which require very robust operation.

The M21170 joins a comprehensive family of Mindspeed crosspoints, cable equalizers, reclockers, and cable drivers and signal conditioners that enable the development of highly sophisticated video broadcast equipment and OTN switches.

The M21170 crosspoint is sampling now, with volume production scheduled to begin in the fourth quarter of 2010. It is packaged in a 50mmx50mm ball grid array (BGA) package and priced at $2,900 in volumes of 1,000.
