Title: ABLSQ.PK.
Post by: David Randolph on May 26, 2005, 07:20:31 AM
Able Laboratories, Inc. (ABRX). The Group's principal activity is to manufacture and distribute generic drug products.

This company had an enormous gap down because of these news: Able Laboratories, Inc. Suspends Manufacturing Operations, Announces Product Recall  (http://www.ablelabs.com/investors/press/PRFH3038976.htm)

I believe this is a short term event and a year from now the company will probably be worth, again, about $25 a share. But that's not the reason I'm going to buy ABRX this morning. I'm buying it because I'm expecting a short covering rally.

It's now estimated that there is about 20 million shares short of ABRX. I believe the shorts didn't like the action on yesterday's session, when the stock closed 13% higher. I think they will run for cover after today's open.

So I'm going to put some money on ABRX at the open.

Everyday our team scans and filters 11000 stocks to come up with the 3 best stocks to buy on a short term basis. please say something about ABRX regarding afterhours fri 5/27. is it worth doubling down? or time to swallow losses?  normally when there is blood in the streets, it's a good time to move in, but the silence from the co concerns me.  i've got 4000 @ 4.93.

Thanks - great site.

Well you are still in profit as the last trade I see is $5.15! I'm holding as the upside potential is a lot bigger than the downside risk (IMO).  Each news item will cause a big reaction, but the biggest will be when the Co says, production has started again, who knows?? $5 should be good support a stop just below makes sense.

thanks for the support man, it 1am and i can't sleep because of this (BUT YOU DO REALIZE ABRX FELL AFTERHOURS TO $4.40, RIGHT?). too much negativity out there!  But still couldn't discuss this with my wife over dinner.  something gotta give to the upside.  i've been following institutional trading on the nasdaq & thomson finanical sites, and as far as i can tell they are not dumping. :'( ::)

Don't know about $4.40. The last tade I see is at 18:29 for $5.15 and the last bid is at $5.12 And that is aftervthe workforce reduction news release. So hopefully rest a bit easier this weekend ;).

ABRX is down $.97 to 4.31 on after hours trading. Here's a Reuters news item I got from Yahoo.

http://yahoo.reuters.com/financeQuoteCompanyNewsArticle.jhtml?duid=mtfh02494_2005-05-27_22-35-56_wen2468_newsml

Title: I have conflicting info ...
Post by: David Randolph on May 28, 2005, 07:16:53 PM
... about the close on the after hours for ABRX. Some sources say $5.15, other's say $4.31.

I've read the news about the firing of 200 employees but I'm not a news reader and definitely not a news follower.

What I got left in this situation is my strategic approach to stocks - I won't let a profit turn into a loss and my price target for the short term on ABRX is $6.75 (the closing of a gap).

Another thing I think it's worth mentioning: never average down your price. When you buy a stock it is because you think it will go up. If it doesn't, if in fact the price goes down, probably you were wrong in your analysis. Are you going to persist being wrong and buy more or start being right by stop being wrong?
Title: Re: ABRX: strong short covering on the way

David,
Could you tell us where you stand with this (ABRX)?
Title: Where do I stand?
Post by: David Randolph on May 29, 2005, 04:29:10 AM
I believe you're asking at what price did I bought the stock, right? It was @ $4.10 as you can see in the homepage (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/).

200 employees is almost half of the workforce, so the news is very relevant for the company. But I think if things were set to go really bad they wouldn't take the difficult task of firing so many people.

I'm with aussietrader when he says that every negative news item will shake stocks but the biggest one that will probably come out in the future is a bullish one, and that is that the company has started production again.

I don't know about you, but I'm not an investor, I'm a speculator. As a speculator I have 11000 stocks to consider and I definitely don't fall in love for one or a few of them. That said, I will respect my rule of never letting a profit turn into a loss and I will sell the stock if $4.10 or lower is reached.

At Friday's close I had a paper profit of 28%. Perhaps I'll have to let go all of it, but I don't care, the market will always be there, there's always great opportunities and I'm confident that I'll profit month after month.

So you keep following 3 Stocks on Fire and please don't worry too much about one single trade ...  just one more thing, are you diversified? I guess not, and that's a mistake - in order to make money you can't lose a lot of money and that's the first rule a speculator must consider.

Have a nice holiday tommyt, even if things go bad this time that has led you to the right place, 3 Stocks on Fire  :)

Post by: tommyt on May 29, 2005, 08:38:23 PM
Thanks David, great site, and a lot of good information.  However, your price didn't concern me, it was more your conviction. I totally understand what is paramount in your approach, and I think it is good and you have the results to be satisfied with it.
It is as hard for me, as well as anyone to turn a profit into a loss, despite diversification. But, as you know, I am new to this site and I was interested in how strongly you felt or stood behind your picks.
I believe you told me, I just don't know if I want to bail on this one so quickly. It seems so way oversold, and as far as I can see institutional have only bought more.
I respect your speculator insights though, and have gained much from your site.
Title: Re: ABRX: strong short covering on the way
Post by: wheezledick on May 29, 2005, 11:26:00 PM
What caught my eye in the news article I posted the link for yesterday was this part:

>>Able said it can give no assurance as to when it will be able to resume manufacturing operations, or if does, whether it will be able to hire, train and retain the manufacturing and other operating personnel necessary to operate effectively.<<

It was the "or if it does" part that concerned me, the air of "finality" to it. I'm new to this, and must confess a dangerous optimism at times, when I see huge gains in stocks. I have about 15K in two stocks acquired thru a former employer, and have been wanting to try to do better with it. I haven't done anything with it yet, I've just been reading everything I can get my hands on, watching, studying, and setting up "mock trades" to test myself. I've seen so many "approaches" to this, and have yet to find what works for, and is comfortable to me. Mr. Randolph's attitude to this "news" at first concerned me, but after considering his method, made more sense. I'm sure I'm not the only newbie out there that wants to jump on that one BIG gainer. That's why I've hung back and just observed up to this point. Things like the discipline of having no more than 6.6% of my money in any one position and sticking to a game plan are just prime examples of what I need to embrace to get anywhere with this. When I'm ready, I'll jump into the mix.

I'd like to compliment those involved with this site. The discourse is honest, polite, and to me, helpfull. I've experienced the free-for-all that called the Yahoo boards, and have got more usefull information here in a few days, than I ever got from the other site in MONTHS. I'm not just talking about "hot picks", I'm talking about philosophy and method. I beg everyone's patience with a neophyte, and wish all success. You all have something here that I haven't found anywhere else.  Keep up the great work.

Thanks!

Good luck with your future potential trades Wheezledick. Just a small piece of advice get the 'One big gainer' out your head, you won't last long chasing that.
Playing the market is all about a strategy and plan for entry, exit, money management, position size, stop parameters etc. Once you find an approach that you are comfortable with (and there are plenty of them)  make sure you write down a set of trade rules that outline what your approach is all about, keep it handy and then apply those rules in all your trades thus making everything as mechanical as possible and leaving the emotions somewhere else.

I don't like the rumors that are out there. Locking in a 12% profit, there's nothing I can do for this stock. I have 11000 stocks to consider, don't want to be in one that has so much risk. If a bullish news comes out I can't imagine the short covering rally, but while it doesn't ... it's risky, some people are talking about bankruptcy, and we can't control people, no matter how irrational they are.

How can a profitable company be bankrupt?
Any input? ???

I've made a good trade on ABRX stock about a month ago: ABRX: strong short covering on the way (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?topic=245.msg837#msg837)

At this moment the chart looks even more promising for a big short covering rally than before. All the bad news is out I believe. Now we have a support in place, so there's plenty of technical motive to rebound (I don't know about fundamentals):

Look at the white candle coming out of support and volume increase. I'm buying ABRX at today's open, as always, 6.66% of global portfolio.

If you want to know more about the company and it's current troubles, please check their website (http://www.ablelabs.com/)

Everyday I will analyze ABRX after the market close until I sell the stock. I always tell I'm going to sell before I actually take action. You just have to follow the answers to this post.

Hi David,

Really like what you are doing on the site.  Question, when you are buying on the open, are you going in MKT or is there a limit?  What price should we be going in??
Thanks
Title: Re: Back into ABRX
Post by: David Randolph on June 23, 2005, 09:04:03 AM
I usually buy at the market, I just don't like to buy on a big gap up at the open (when the open is higher than the previous day's high), only when I have strong reasons to do it, like it happened with the IIJI trade where I bought the stock rising more than 11% in the pre-market.

Good luck !

Post by: David Randolph on June 23, 2005, 10:10:20 AM
I bought at $4, the open price. Since the open was so high it is natural for the stock to pullback a little.

But I can't tell how to put orders or the specific price, that just comes with practice I guess ... when I say «I'll buy at the open» it is because I'm going to buy at the open, with a limit order but above the expected open price given by the pre-market.

I am a little confused, what happened to the guidance.  I feel the premise behind this site is to isolate stocks on the move, with that being the focus in temultous times we need to know what is going on.  Dave, not here to argue your success but a lot of questions went unanswered today.  emails?, OPWV, did you buy it, why is it not shown on the homepage?  Open positions, what you are doing, where support is, what is the sell discipline.  The majority of the people on this site are investing money on your reccomendations, all I can say is you can't disappear when the times get tough.  It' quite counter productive to the recent success you had before this string of losses.  The emails have been supportive in your corner, but not responding to important questions in tough times I feel is a responsibility you take on when you are making reccomendations.  Would greatly appreciate if Mr. Randolph would respond.  Thanks

Adam, Though I can't speak for dave and Ram but would like to throw some light. And all is my own assumptions/opinions [I may be wrong big time :)].

You have to know the limitations:

1. There are like 1500+ members and growing everyday.

2. Two part time guys supporting as much as possible. And the questions that you asked have been most probably answered at other places.

3. They are not telling us to invest in their 'picks'. Read the disclaimer at the bottom of the page.

4. Dave always tells when to sell, for all 'picks'. But it will be difficult for him to emotionally support each one of us whenever 3SF stock takes an interday dive. And I fully understand what it means when your portfolio is in deep red.

5. We are the ones who decides when to push the button. And we are responsible for it. Its up to us if we dont feel like selling or buying any 3SF 'mentioned stock'. Take e.g. I did not even consider buying TZOO, not my style. Some other guys did not sell BRVO, its their style. Everyone is free here. Blindly following others may not be the best strategy, no matter how much we like the person or his track record. Bottomline: 'Always decide yourself, though you can use other ppl info as input to your decision'.

6. These guys are telling that they will upgrade the server [which surely need resources] and fix the email problem. Need to be little patient about that.

Hope it helps. As Ram says, this is T2T. We are here to help each other.

VERY well put, stocky! (Applaud)

What we get here on 3stocksonfire are examples of how trading can be done, with good educational comments and encouraging help.

The decision to buy and sell is our own.
For example: I sold VPHM before 3sof.
I held on to LSI a bit longer than 3sof.
And I never got in on BRVO (Thinking that it was a one-day-wonder!) (Stupid!)

And I can't blame anyone but myself for whatever...

One have to do a little research oneself on the stocks, too.... ;)

The friendlyness and helpfulness of this whole group is very special.
The work the guys running this site is putting in, is awesome.

I'm learning a bit every day, and I'm very grateful!

This friday was indeed a sad one for most of us.
But also a learning experience.

Hang in there, all stocks don't go down (hopefully!) at the same time.

Cheers!

Very well put, Stocky and Cumulina.  I give you both applause.

I have been a member here since June 17.  I decided to join only because of the high caliber of posts I had read, and only because I didn't see any touting of stocks and bashing of other posters, like most other message boards.  I am very, very impressed with this site, and with the willingness of others to talk T2T (trader to trader) in a helpful manner.

Let's please not expect too much of David.  Imagine if 1500 people were watching you trade, hanging on your every word, and waiting for your next post with baited breath!  That's far too much pressure on David, or on any human being.  Let's be fair to him.

I am not putting blame on stocks oing down.  taht happens everywhere, however a day like yesterday where there were a lot of questions i just feel there could have been better direction.  I think by posting percentage returns to some degree you are taking credit for well deserved performance, the flip side is to be there as those returns are coming down.  OPWV says bought but not on the performance?  I think this group, and site is quality, no reason for Dave or others to be on the defensive.  Just some answers to people's questions is all.  Let's make some $$$

Good luck

adam....looking for directions or advice from this site is not what makes this site great..for me... it's the charts that dave and the members bring to this site...charts that are ready for a breakout or not...start eduacating yourself with charts....read william o'neil's ...the sucessful investor...it's only 10 bucks...i have been a member for about a week and a half and i ALONE read the chart for bravo...i bought at 10000 shares at 35 cents...it's up to a buck now...bought qoil...made wrong moves...could have made a killing on qoil on pull backs alone...but that in itself is a learning lesson for me...i did not lose a penny on qoil because i got out at what i bought it at two days later...the markets had 5 straight losing sessions and i am way up in profits.....when you blame others..you are really blaming yourself..imo...you won't find a better site than this....just educate yourself with charts and you'll be ok. hope that helps....

Good luck

Fair enough, Adam, and I give you applause for expressing your concerns in a polite, reasonable manner.  If any of us appear to be defensive, and I will speak only for myself, it is because I think that some members appear to have some very unrealistic expections of David, and I would like to help dispel any notions that David has any obligations to us beyond what he is offering: trades that we can choose take or not take.

I am a member only since June 17, but I know what David has said to us a number of times: he tries not to be too overly concerned with the intraday gyrations of his picks.  He generally looks at his portfolio when the market closes to make his determinations.

When his successful picks went up, David was not on the site, constantly commenting about it.   Why should he be expected to be on site to comment, just because the market is having some sharp down days?  He's busy.

Let's be fair with David.  I don't agree that David's posting his results publicly in any way obligates him to be here when the market is having a bad day,  answering people's questions.   That's far too much to ask of David, or of anyone.  David has a life beyond the stock market.

I hope that I don't sound harsh, Adam, or that I'm singling you out.  I'd just luck to see David be able to do what he does best, "Stocks On Fire," so that his generous effort doesn't turn into "Stock Burnout" for him.

Good luck with your trading, Adam.

Question to the forum, I want to best be able to use the site. Are the members generating the ideas from the site coordinators or the other members.  i assume it is both, but to those that have had success with the site how have you best utilized?
Thanks for the responses, again my posts are not to stir controversy, i merely want to make gobs of money like everyone else.   ;D

In my opinion, this site is a community center for traders...well maybe more like a cafe...sometimes a buffet ;).

The guys who put this site up are Frederick Ramsburg and David Randolph.  Both of them are seasoned traders.

David Randolph runs this particular portfolio out in the open.  It is called 3stocksonfire.  Every move he makes in this "personal" portfolio is out in the open.  His reasons for opening and closing his trades are out in the open too.  He even tries to answer questions about this portfolio with anyone who asks.

This is a free site.  And it is stated by the founders that donations should only be made if this site has really helped you out.

There are other boards where any trader(newbie - Jesse Livermore) can interact with each other on their various plays or even topics such as best broker, market direction and money management.

You can send personal messages to members, rate posting quality(applauding or smiting) and most importantly talk with people who do what you do.

The structure of this website is top-notch but what makes this place amazing in the end is the community(international).  I think you will find there is much to learn here.

Perhaps if one is to see 3stockonfire.com from this perspective it would assist one's "expectations" of the members.

Now lets hit next week hard.   :o

Thought I'd throw in my 2 cents. Although I'm a newbie here (about 2+ weeks I think), I've been trading fairly successfully for a goodly number of years. What I truly like about this site is the different approaches to trading that are on display. You have your purely technical traders, your fundamental guys, and a few guys like myself that do a little of both. If there is ONE thing that I have learned down through the years that is of paramount importance , it is this: NEVER STOP LEARNING. Just when you think you've got this game down pat, it will bite you right in the butt and you'll reel off a string of losers. So what do you do when that happens? You try to correct your mistakes and move on. If you do that, you will develop your own style and success will find you. As Ramsburg says, Plan the trade and Trade the plan. That is very good advice and so is this: Pay attention to what the traders on this site are saying. They know what they are talking about. All The Best
The Irishman

Just an idea, but maybe on a certain time of the day say at ..(3 pm EST) for example that ppl that would be interested use the chat room to discuss the the 3 picks that are posted and to evaluate how they are doing..instead of waiting till sombody answers the post on board. This would be done on a daily basis and maybe solve some issues and concerns that anybody would have concerning the picks.I have not used the chat room myself so forgive me,if this already being done just i thought this might be a good idea.I dont mean to complicate things just trying to help  :)

Hello fellows, thanks for the support  :)

On Friday I had absolutely no time to be posting here on 3SF. I didn't even got time to analyze ABRX, so I said «no time to analyze, keeping the stock». The problem is that I own a small business and there were some issues I had to deal (go to the bank, meet with some clients).

After the open I was so tired that I picked my family and went away for the weekend ... you see 3SF growth was so fast that I'm still not used to the new tasks I have, not yet organized enough.

But me and Ramsburg are going to do everything we can for this project (he's my partner on the small business too - it is a swimming school), we've hired one more clerk and this weekend we're buying a machine that will unload some of our work.

I've been sleeping just 4 to 5 hours a day, moving between the two «jobs» ... so on Friday I couldn't take it anymore, picked up my family and went to the countryside, where my family has a country house, to rest for the weekend.

When I got home yesterday I saw the market and particularly ABRX didn't behave well. I'm reading your posts now and I'm very pleased with your comprehension. The problem is that we're not machines, just human beings with their natural weaknesses and necessities, where as markets don't really are concerned with that, the market doesn't even know we exist and never forgives.

The e-mails were not sent because I didn't had time. What I can say is that I'm organizing my life to embrace completely this new and exciting project.

Our service consists of managing an open portfolio. We disclose our trades, explaining what we're buying and selling and why we do it. You can read and learn from our successes and mistakes. Know about our strategy and use the part of it that fits your trading personality.

But I believe it's not a good idea to follow the portfolio ... for people interested we probably should open an hedge fund in the US (who knows, in the future?)

Oooppsss, my 2 year old son just woke up, one more time I have to delay my analysis of ABRX, these humans ...  ;)

First of all hats off.  Your doing a great job.  The site is quality, and the picks based on the performance returns are top notch.  Human nature simply is when things get cloudy asthe market did last week, that is where the hand holding is most needed.  Possible suggestions...when putting out a stock, and it does not nessarily have to be first thing in the morning as you are cruising charts but at some point issue support, resistance, target, and stop.  this way we have the tools to implement in times that you can't be there.
Again great site, seems like a great group of people on the site.  Enjoy Sunday...we need you tomorrow. ;D

My two cents worth as posted in the GLGS thread.

David & Frederick,
You guys had a great ideal when you came up with 3StocksOnFire.I'm proud to be a member.Thank you.
Thank you...starfire,for your comment.Let's do be civil. We are not here to bash each other. As Frederick Ramsburgh has said,T2T.I would hope that we all could learn from each other. There are good stock heads here.I know I have learned things already from other members.I welcome the opportunity.
If I make a decision to follow another member's recommendation and buy a stock, that is my decision. If the trade goes sour and it becomes evedent that this trade is going to be a loss. Then I am not going to come back on you and bash you with foul words. It was your decision to make your buy, and it was my decision to make my buy.The other member did not twist my arm and say here you must buy.We must accept the outcome on any given trade, win or loose.
I hear talk on the topic boards about the business of average down in your buying.I would never take this approach in buying stocks, and never would advise any trader to do so.I am 50 years old,no need to hide my age.I have been interested in the stock market since I was a young teenager.I have been trading in stocks since the age of 20,I have built a nice portfolio over those years.I say ,I have learned things from other members here.It is true, I have.We never are to old to learn new tricks.I have read a number of business and investment books over the years. The best one IMHO was called "How to Trade in Stocks"by J.Livermore.From this book I adopted his method of averaging up,or pyramiding.I always in my trading average up...."not down"..
This is a great website with some very knowledgeable stock pickers. So if a trade goes red, let's not take to the underhanded tactics of those other message boards. We all can learn from each other and extend help to our fellow member,I know we each have a little to offer.
So let's be civil and make 3StocksOnFire even better than it is.
Best Regards....and good luck in all your trades.

Thanks a lot for your great support guys !

I can see that most of our members have already understood the truth spirit of this project, and the «T2T» philosophy that we are trying to implement!

We are really proud of this community!

Like David said, we are trying to organize ourselves right now (we are partners in other business) in order to get the time we need for running this great project on a more professional way. This all 3SF idea came up very quickly, and we never thought that this could turn into this great venture in such a short period of time... We never though that we could gather 1560 stock enthusiastics in less the 2 months and so much market knowledge together on the same web space. Of course this changes a lot of our first thoughts about this project, and we need to adapt our private lives to it (that's what we are doing right now).

But we still have a lot of work ahead... Technical problems must be solved (we thought this server could be enough. but it doesn't), our concept must be upgraded and re organized, we must create some sort of rules for our messages boards and some disclaimers to help members to understand how this all works, so we can all paddle on the same directions....

Let's work together and make some greens ;) !!!

Best regards !

PS: And I must improve my english LOL  ;)

As a newbie to stocks, and still just an observer, it's pretty obvious to me that this isn't a site about stock picks, but a site about stock pickING. I'm starting to zero in on the type of trader I'm going to be, and I must say, it won't be exactly like David. It won't be exactly like ANYONE on this site, for that matter. I will develop and use MY OWN method, based in no small part on what I learn from everyone here. People, David's no stock "guru". He's a bright, experienced young man with lots of ambition and generosity. He's sharing his KNOWLEDGE, not stock tips. His site has attracted some other very talented traders to the forum. I learn just as much from them as the site owners. Shoot, I even learn from folks that try to mimic every move made on 3SF and lose money. You can read the desperation in their posts, and I understand how that upsets David and Frederick. To tell you the truth, it HELPS me. I see it as learning valuable lessons at no expense to me. I'm not here for the stock picks, I'm here because I want to be a successful trader.

Thanks.

Nice posts here on ABRX. Too bad I have nothing pleasant to say about the stock. This was a technical speculative play but it didn't work out.

From now on I'll pick less stocks, trying to trade less, and better stocks. When I sell this stock my number of losing trades will equal the number of winning, although the 3 Stocks on Fire portfolio has a 120% plus profit over the last two months. That's because I had a few big winners and some small losses. 4 stocks I've sold with more than 100% profits and none showed a loss of more than 30%.

That's it to stock trading: cut the losses, let the profits run.

Of course, if it wasn't for the pressure to keep recommending stocks everyday perhaps my win/loss ratio could be better than 50%. You see, I was bearish on the entire market (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?topic=871.0) but I kept on buying stocks ... and that's no good business. But I sure have lowered my exposure, from 100% invested to just 40% today.

Cut the losses, let the profits run is truly a winning strategy, since stocks generally move in trends. So I'll stick to that strategy and sell ABRX today with a small loss, keeping my cash balance high for the time where there will be plenty of opportunities.

Strange...stock plunges, nobody mentions it? $2.70 in AH. Oh well, I didn't get in last time.  How much more bad news can it take?
The "blood in the streets" almost makes me want to get in for a quick pop reversal. Say...3.50 or so? Of coarse this would be after Tuesdays am sell-off.

TommyT,

I did not mention it cause I lost 1k selling it in after hours. My biggest flaw in this game is an unwillingness to take reasonable losses , resulting in bigger losses in the end.  Got me in glgs as well or almost as much.   Worked in my favor not selling brvo when I bought at .94 and watched the sell off, or should I say walked away from the monitor during the sell off.  Also worked on ipix, but overall it has been a losing strategy of mine.

This co is one of the most amazing crashes I have ever seen. They wait until afterhours closes to release bad news...., they don't feel as if they own any explaination to shareholders.  I 'm am truely stunned....and thank God I am not a bagholder.

Added more Call Options.

Willing to take the chance on a buyout or restructure at this level.

Always the risk of bankruptcy.  Love buying with horrible outlook and news.
Options limits the investment and give huge potential gains.

Good Luck !

The saying "Buy when there is Blood if the Streets" would certainly fit. I would join you, but I have just too much stress on my back right now. If not, it's definately my cup of tea with a small % of portifiolo.  Good Luck, and watch out for after afterhours closes, this company loves to dump bad news then, especially on holiday weekends. They really couldn't give a rat's ass about shareholders.

Dec. 05 Calls.  Different Strike Prices.
Would not mind going out even further than December when possible.

High risk as they have turned over 2 CEO's.

But it worked well for me with DECK and OVTI in the past.

Bankruptcy is not always bad.

Restructuring is the key.

Moving higher today, IMO.

The options are going to be up huge near term.
