First, I want you to carefully read this news article:
Bush summons drugmakers to ramp up flu vaccine (http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story.asp?guid=%7BAB1F3A84%2D71AB%2D4AE2%2D845D%2D7D7CDA12BE05%7D&siteid=mktw&dist=)
This is important for HEB and NVAX: «The meeting will also discuss product liability issues surrounding experimental vaccines, McClellan said.»
Now, look at the companies mentioned on the article, there are 7 of them: Wyeth (WYE), Chiron (CHIR), GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), Merck (MRK), Sanofi-Aventis (SNY), MedImmune (MEDI) and Vical (VICL).
Considering their market cap, we have WYE with $61.79B, CHIR with $8.13B, GSK with $149.8B, MRK with $58.91B, SNY with $117.29B, MEDI with 8.25B and finally, VICL with $104.89M !!!
Now, what in the world is VICL doing on that league? It says:
«To date, three drugmakers have been given federal grants to develop vaccines against H5N1: Sanofi-Aventis, MedImmune and niche vaccine maker Vical»
Of course, revenue coming from sales of a Bird Flu vaccine will have much more impact on a small cap than on a large or giant cap.
Reading some more about VICL, we find this:
Vical Receives Grant From NIH for Development of Human Vaccine Against Pandemic Avian Flu (http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/newsarticle.asp?dist=¶m=archive&siteid=mktw&guid=%7B9DDCBD01%2DF25C%2D4025%2DA457%2DAEA170A86E97%7D)
I guess all barriers to entry on this market will be diminished because of political pressure and real danger. Like someone said: «who cares if it is FDA approved or not if it can save your life?»
Technically the stock is practically dead but I bet it will get a lot of attention after this article and a nice rally tomorrow. I'm buying it at tomorrow's open for the 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio, I have to place several bets because I don't want to miss the big winner, and there will always be underlying demand each time a news item gets released about the Avian Flu.
David,
Based on strong fundamentals, combined with tonight's news on their cervical cancer drug:
http://biz.yahoo.com/rb/051006/merck_cervical.html?.v=5
in addition to the White House invitation, wouldn't MRK also be a good play for this group?
VICL broke the descending resistance line this morning, but failed to hold. To confirm a breakout of the pattern, we need to close above 5.07, as far as I can tell.
My only concern is Volume is higher, but not as high as I would expect it to be ???
If we don't get the breakout today, it may pull back a little before testing again. I may wait and see on this one for now.
Good luck all who went in this morning ;)
Seems that the OnFire list is becoming very undiversified. Stocks like HEB and NVAX ... and now VICL (the other two are unknown to me, I have tracked VICL for a couple of years and it is a snoozer). SVA too. Gotta question that logic ??? - bird flu is a popular thing to talk about this week ... but I cannot fathom owning all of these stocks with a large portion of the portfolio, especially since another chunk is in "garbage" stocks (the crap that no one would buy during the bull run like JDSU). What is the logic given that diversification is good at some level?
According to that stockta.com site, resistance was at 4.78. But it looks more like Scottishtrader said closer to 5 for support resistance line?
I've owned Crucell for some years. If you want to own a good biotech stock, that's the one to have. (IMHO) Several whackoid VICL pumpers regulaly post messages on the yaloo CRCL board, and to tell the truth they sound like morons. It may be unfair to judge a stock by its holders, but I'd be very wary of this one. Chedck out CRCL

Drug stocks mixed, Merck slides on trial setback
By Val Brickates Kennedy, MarketWatch
Last Update: 5:13 PM ET Oct. 7, 2005
BOSTON (MarketWatch) -Drug stocks finished the session mixed on Friday as Merck slid on reports that its first defense witness had been struck in its on-going Vioxx liability trial.
The Amex Pharmaceutical Index slipped 0.4% to close 317.94, dragged down by index component Merck in late afternoon trade.
Biotechnology issues fared slightly better, with the Amex Biotechnology Index creeping up 0.3% to 618.03.
Shares of Merck skidded 4% to $25.85 on Friday afternoon. According to reports, the testimony of Merck's first witness in its on-going personal injury case in New Jersey was struck by the presiding judge for giving misleading testimony. Merck is being sued by a former user of its now-recalled drug Vioxx who claims he suffered a heart attack after taking the pain reliever.
The N.J. case is Merck's second Vioxx suit to come to trial. In August, a Texas jury awarded the widow of a Vioxx user $253 million in damages. Merck faces over 4,500 lawsuits relating to Vioxx.

Gilead is the developer of antiviral drug Tamiflu, marketed by European drug conglomerate Roche, which the government has been stockpiling as a hedge against a major outbreak of the avian flu.
Biotech index component Gilead jumped 4% to close at $47.51.
Vical, meanwhile, has been working an avian flu vaccine under a grant from the National Institutes of Health. Vical shares hopped 9% to $4.88.

It really doesn't look like KCScott ! The stock broke badly to new lows on that news, I hope you didn't buy it, if you did you should probably get rid of it quickly (when a stock goes down on bullish news that tells you it will continue to go down).
MRK's market cap is too big to be a Bird Flu play, the sales from any medicine related to Bird Flu probably wouldn't impact the overall revenue and profit numbers all that much.

I agree ScottishTrader :) But volume was high indeed, volume must be seen on a relative, not absolute basis. I hope VICL gives you a reason to buy in the near future.

Diversification is wise, but on a bear market pretty much everything will head down, except for specific stories or themes. That's what I'm looking for here. Risk is controlled since I have just 53% of the Portfolio invested, remember that, 47% is still in cash.

David, did you buy this stock Friday ?? I did not see it in the open trades. Thanks !
Yes I did, as planned, at the open, price $4.64. You can see it now on the 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio. Because I've received some personal messages and e-mails from some subscribers complaining about the information provided on the 3 Stocks on Fire (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/3stocksonfire.php) link, now I will wait at least 24 hours before I put the trades on the portfolio, what do you think about this?
Thank you !
Well, now let's go to the update on VICL. I bought the stock, now, as usual, I will let the market tell me if this was a good move or not.
We have a simple technical setup on the chart, an ascending trendline and a descending one, so the pattern is a triangle. A stockholder doesn't want to see the stock break the ascending trendline, which for today is standing at $4.24. Resistance is at $5.06.
I will continue holding VICL for as long as it closes above the ascending trendline.
David, another good call! ;)
When the bearish market trend started last week, I sold all of my positions to cash. I was going to sit out and research a group of stocks to buy when the market rebounded, but got your alerts on HEB, NVAX and now VICL.
Sold HEB on a nice trade and bought more NVAX with a really nice gain today.
As you stated, we now sit and wait for the market on VICL too.
By the way, as long as I am watching the market closely, I don't have too much problem being not as diversified as before. I now watch my precious basket of a few stocks really closely!
I used to split my positions 5-8 ways, only to see my daily gains negated by losses. I now trade with 1-3, up to 4 positions daily. I don't daytrade, I buy on dips and sell as stock price peaks on limit sells (for someone who has a full-time day job, limit buy/sell has been working well for me).
Thanks to all the supporters of 3StocksOnFire and David/Frederick, keep up the great work!
Thanks for your support LiveLife :) And good luck on your trading, you know you need to have tight stops if you're not diversified enough.
VICL shot up 10% today, on volume above average, breaking through a resistance zone. The technical target of today's breakout is $6.88 :o
With the market going down I'm very pleased to own these specific theme stocks, and I will continue holding them without a doubt.
Sorry for all the typos the other day when writing about Crucell. I was using somebody else's fingers. Anyway, the symbol is CRXL (not crcl as I had mistakenly written). They made a big deal with Merck today. Their technology is leased to many companies to aid in the manufacture of vaccines.
Good call on the breakout today, David ;D
I expected it to happen, but was fully invested, so didn't want to break one of my other plays to get in, which is a shame, as it was a very good run today and should go higher. Perhaps I will have the opportunity to buy in on profit taking in the next few days, as I am sure it is likely to happen. However, I doubt it will retrace back to resistance now support again in the short term.
Congrats to all holding this one, it certainly looks like its bird flu season stock-wise ;)
the Scotsman
VICL is a low float stock and depending on the bird flu hype, this stock could really take off. Look at IPIX back in March/April of 2004. It ran from $2.00 to $27.00 on hype of security cameras!! :D
David,
Did you sell today? I see it hit $6.98 and and passed your target. I didn't put in my limit order to sell cause I thought I had a few days before it would get there. Wish I would have caught it on the upswing. Maybe we'll get another pop tomorrow.
Wow, you sure know how to pick'em David!
Nice gain today with matching volume.
With such a large gain, should we look out for profit taking tomorrow?
Keep up the great work!
I said this:
QuoteVICL shot up 10% today, on volume above average, breaking through a resistance zone. The technical target of today's breakout is $6.88 :o
But unfortunately I wasn't counting on this moving up so fast ... like basanlas said:

... the same happened to me, since the target was so far away, I didn't said to sell at the target, so I didn't put any sell order on the market.
We've had pretty impressive news and volume yesterday. The news were:
Vical DNA Vaccine Technology Enters Phase 2 Clinical Trial for HIV (http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/newsarticle.asp?siteid=mktw&sid=10090&guid=%7B552696EA%2DEBEC%2D431E%2D9C30%2DF0F5E6A0EBD2%7D&symb=)
If we go a bit deeper we find that VICL is not alone in the pursuit of a vaccine for HIV, it has a lot of competitors, some of them giants.
I wasn't counting on this news and I should have sold at the $6.88 target. I didn't. But I will sell around today's open, taking a 30% plus profit in a couple of days. What I need now is to take profits and have cash available.
The Bird Flu play was nice while it was last, but now people will start to judge stocks a bit better and separating the companies that really have a chance of making profits from the disease (like SVA and bigger names), and those that are not ready.
I think VICL is not ready and probably won't be ready in time. I will sell the stock today.
VICL down 1$ in pre-market!

We're going to get bruised in this one today... :(
This is ridiculous!
-19.17%
Instead of selling with a loss - then I added to my position.
We'll see how crazy that was... ::)
Anybody else still sitting with this one?
Bought in today at $4.899. :) My stop will be a close below the 61.8% fib retracement at about $4.80 which coincidentally is almost exactly the stock offering price. The offering of 4.7 million shares is not good but it will still keep the O/S below 30 million and that's not so bad. I was expecting some profit taking at some point but am now hoping that VICL stays in the news on Avian Flu so that people don't forget about it. ;)
Concerning VICL and MEMY:
Here is the trick the companies played when they want additional funding through private placement:
step 1. Company which needed the money was in talk with hedge fund;
step 2. Hedge fund bought the company's shares and bought big;
step 3. Company announced good news so the share price was pushed up;
step 4. Hedge fund sold it with big profit;
step 5. Company announced private placement and shares tunked;
step 6. Hedge fund gave the money (part of its profit) to the company.
As a result, the small investors provided the money not the hedge fund.
I have seen this kind of tricks many many times. MEMY is one of them.
Thanks for the info, Shawfund. I thought it seemed peculiar how both MEMY and VICL announced a private palcement after some good news. (I kind of remember CPSTdoing it too.) Do you know if there are SEC regulations against this practice?
And does the private placement hurt the stock price most at the announcement or at the tiime when the placement happens?
I'm still holding some MEMY and watching VICL.
VICL is right back to it's breakout level...
true - solid movement the last few days - looking to ride with the rest of the bird flu plays. I don't think its ready to pull back quite just yet, will keep an eye on it at the open
;)
I am holding several of the "bird-flu plays" - and off course hope that this is a "play", and not a necessity!
There is talk of licence for making "Tamiflu" will be given out, and if that happens then it'll be very interesting to see if one (or more) of the companys mentioned here on 3sof will be chosen...
With so many of us members alert to this, it should benefit us all ;)
The concern of the avian flu is getting more intense here in Europe, and great efforts are being made to calm down the population.
Yesterdays movement of the different "Flu-play" stock, I hope was only profit-taking.
I'm currently holding: BCRX, HEB, NVAX, SVA and VICL.
Hey cumulina,
I'm with you on this one - currently holding HEB and SVA, just bought VICL this morning at 5.60 - to high of course (I'll never learn, but then it always seems like stocks you buy dip down as soon as you buy them... are they just waiting for you to make your order???)
I think the key to getting an edge on this one is to figure out which company will lead in Europe where the threat is most intense at present. Of course there is concern in the US, but the US is an island in so many ways, and until cases show up there, the general public will not take it too seriously - saying that, if it does, we all know how much the American public like to panic buy drugs for any occasion!!
My question is that if all supplies of Tamiflu are selling out all over Europe, why isn't Roche doing better/on everyone's radar as they are the drug makers - are they simply too big???
SAN DIEGO, Oct. 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Vical Incorporated (NASDAQ:VICL) today announced that the company will report financial results for third quarter 2005 before the opening of trading on Tuesday, November 1, and conduct a conference call and webcast to discuss the financial results and provide a company update at noon Eastern Time on Tuesday, November 1. The call is open on a listen-only basis to any interested parties. The company will provide details on independent and partnered development programs in the conference call and webcast.
Definitely worth keeping an eye on as it is mid-day tuesday 8)
VICL seeing some solid action today, along with all the other bird flu plays (with the notable exception of SVA ???) Up over 4% right now, has been pushing 5.50 earlier - hopefully should see a run into earnings...
Hmm... hbaven't posted here in a while, and strange to see no-one else is. Not sure if anyone else is following VICL, but it broke ou late yesterday after earnings (which were not particularly stellar) and followed through with a big move this morning. It might well be VICL's turn in the bird flu limelight - their DNA technology is getting some good press.
Been holding this since last failed spike (bad buy again) and glad I didn't get rid of it. big move this morning and currently forming a nice consolidating pennant on the 15min chart - should move any minute.
I'll post the intraday and 3 month charts right now and come back in a bit
Go VICL ;D ;D
Made nice profits the first run and got back in on a good dip. Now, I'm looking to get out again, probably today...depends on the market. I'd love to see a third soldier today but then again who wouldn't.
Good luck...Jody
Well unfortunately after yesterdays nice jump, the pennant I drew turned into a descending resistance line - quite possibly just due to profit-taking, but considering VICL's previous pattern of spiking and retracing, I didn't want to take that chance. Sold out at 5.70, lower than I wanted to, but glad I did, just not comfortable with the intraday chart.
Having said that, it'll probably spike again tomorrow ::)
You never can tell, but my main goal was to get out without a loss above all else, which I achieved :)
Here's the recent intraday (15min) chart
Might be ready to bounce off support here, got a reversal candlestick(Bullish Piercing) on good volume last session.
It's still technically in a downtrend. By definition, a downtrend is when the stock is consistently making lower lows and lower highs from day to day. I'd wait to see if the stock tests $3.50 before making a decision to buy any.
Leaira
If it does bounce, would we have a triple bottom here?

I see this trash hyped on various message boards. Is there some kind of paid promotional campaign for this dog?
The fundamentals are horrible.
Nice warm welcome from equity to a new board member.VICL got a small mention on Friday and is technically poised for further gains this week as investors are warming to biotech related stocks.

This will set the stock on fire....
(RTTNews) - Vical Inc. (VICL) announced its lead three-component influenza DNA
vaccine candidate provided 100% protection in mice and ferrets against lethal
challenges with a highly virulent (Vietnam/1203/2004) H5N1 avian influenza
virus.
Additionally, Vical's vaccine candidate using only two of the three components
provided high levels of protection against multiple human flu strains and
against the H5N1 avian flu strain.
Based on the results, the company is continuing to advance toward human testing
of the pandemic flu DNA vaccine candidate.
It looks like it's time to pick up some VICL. Looking for some follow through today and a positive PR on the HIV results next week.

VICL Vical Announces Encouraging H1N1 Pandemic Influenza Vaccine ... by GlobeNewswire Apr 27 2011 6:30AM
SAN DIEGO, Apr 27, 2011 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- Vical Incorporated (VICL) announced today that more than half of the subjects in the Phase 1 trial of the company's Vaxfectin(R)-formulated vaccine for H1N1 pandemic influenza generated neutralizing antibodies of the type expected to provide protection against the disease. The vaccine was well-tolerated. Vical was the first company to manufacture a vaccine against the H1N1 influenza virus and the first to conduct animal testing during the 2009 outbreaks, and these latest results demonstrated the safety and immunogenicity of that same vaccine in humans.
The trial was supported by U.S. government funding from the Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the U.S. Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC), and was conducted in collaboration with NMRC. Vical announced in February that it had extended its relationship with NMRC to develop the company's platform technology for the rapid development and production of vaccines against emerging infectious diseases. With additional funding under the extended relationship, Vical will work with NMRC under this contract to establish systems and procedures for the application of Vical's DNA delivery technology, with the goal of protecting military personnel from the threat of new pathogens in the early stages of outbreaks.
"We clearly demonstrated the speed and safety of our approach during the 2009 H1N1 pandemic influenza outbreaks," said Larry R. Smith, Ph.D., Vical's Vice President of Vaccine Research. "The encouraging results of our Phase 1 clinical testing of our H1N1 vaccine, coupled with the successful Phase 1 clinical testing of our H5N1 avian-origin influenza vaccine, provide further validation for both our vaccine platform and our Vaxfectin(R) adjuvant. Through our collaboration with NMRC, we are working toward establishing an emerging disease vaccine platform to provide rapid protection against novel pathogens, initially for military personnel and eventually for the broader population."
About Vical
Vical researches and develops biopharmaceutical products based on its patented DNA delivery technologies for the prevention and treatment of serious or life-threatening diseases. Potential applications of the company's DNA delivery technology include DNA vaccines for infectious diseases or cancer, in which the expressed protein is an immunogen; cancer immunotherapeutics, in which the expressed protein is an immune system stimulant; and cardiovascular therapies, in which the expressed protein is an angiogenic growth factor. The company is developing certain infectious disease vaccines and cancer therapeutics internally. In addition, the company collaborates with major pharmaceutical companies and biotechnology companies that give it access to complementary technologies or greater resources. These strategic partnerships provide the company with mutually beneficial opportunities to expand its product pipeline and address significant unmet medical needs.
