AVI BioPharma Releases Neugene Data Showing Resistance Against Lethal Toxins in Animals
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- AVI BioPharma Inc. said Friday that its antisense drugs showed positive results against four lethal agents in preclinical studies conducted with Army researchers.
Shares of AVI BioPharma Inc. rose 40 cents, or 14.8 percent, to $3.10 on the Nasdaq. Company shares have traded over the past 52 weeks in a range of $1.98 to $4.24.
In four separate programs with the Army's Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Md., AVI found that combinations of its Neugene antisense technology combatted the Ebola and Marburg viruses and the potential bioterror weapons of anthrax and ricin in animal tests. The company said that it is also studying how antisense drugs can combat the avian flu H5N1.
Antisense drugs are a class of compounds that interfere with genetic material that gets translated into harmful proteins.
Results showed that the most effective drug combinations produced 100 percent survival rates against Ebola genes in mice and guinea pigs one to two days after they had been infected.
In another guinea pig study, the Neugene drugs produced a "high survival rate" in animals infected with the Marburg virus, which killed all untreated animals.
Almost all mice infected with anthrax and treated with antisense drugs survived, the company said. Also, in cell culture studies, researchers found that 75 percent of cells remained viable after a 100 percent lethal dose of ricin, an enzymatic toxin made from caster beans.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- AVI BioPharma Inc. shares rose as much as 20% to trade at $3.25 early Friday after the company released positive study results for its Neugene antisense agents. The animal studies, which were partially funded by Department of Defense, found that Neugene agents were successful in combatting both the Ebola and Marburg viruses. They were also found to interrupt the cellular mechanism that ricin and anthrax toxins employ to induce lethal toxicity. Portland, Ore.-based AVI also said it's using its technology to address the avian flu H5N1.

AVI BIOPHARMA UPDATES RESULTS FROM DEPARTMENT OF DEFENSE FUNDED COLLABORATIVE PROGRAMS; NEUGENE ANTISENSE AGENTS EFFECTIVE AT COMBATING EBOLA AND MARBURG VIRUSES AND RICIN AND ANTHRAX TOXINS
AVI BioPharma, Inc. (Nasdaq:AVII - News) today announced results from four programs partially funded by The United States Department of Defense (DoD) and in collaboration with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick, Md. AVI has successfully used its NEUGENE® antisense technology to combat the Ebola and Marburg viruses and to interrupt the cellular mechanism that ricin and anthrax toxins employ to induce lethal toxicity.
Ebola and Marburg Virus Results
Ebola virus studies in three animal species have been conducted at USAMRIID. The studies provided evidence of robust efficacy in multiple experiments conducted on mice, guinea pigs and nonhuman primates. Previous attempts by USAMRIID to treat Ebola virus with other technologies have demonstrated few successes in treating all three species.
Using Ebola virus mouse and guinea pig models, AVI targeted six of the seven Ebola virus genes with multiple compounds. The compounds were used as single agents and in combinations in prophylactic and therapeutic models. Among these studies, the most effective protocols, where 100 percent survival was observed at low doses of drug, were three-drug combinations targeting different Ebola genes when administered 24-48 hours after virus challenge.
Several of the antisense compounds that were efficacious in the mouse studies were also studied in the guinea pig model as single agents and in combinations. The guinea pig model was employed because it is a more rigorous model for Ebola virus efficacy. Results were similar to what was observed in the mouse studies with therapeutic protocols using combination agents being most effective.
Based on the mouse and guinea pig experience, a three-drug combination was used in initial nonhuman primate studies and also was successful. Consistent with previous preclinical and clinical studies in other disease settings, AVI's NEUGENE compounds were well-tolerated, from a safety perspective, by the NEUGENE-treated nonhuman primates.
In experiments designed to evaluate NEUGENE antisense agents targeting the Marburg virus, the guinea pig animal model was used, and the experimental design was similar to the studies on Ebola virus. More than 20 antisense compounds directed against multiple Marburg genes as single agents have been tested first in vitro, as well as in both prophylactic and therapeutic regimens in a guinea pig model of Marburg virus.
In animals challenged with high doses of the virus that were nearly 100 percent lethal in untreated animals, a high survival rate was observed in single agent protocols targeting distinct Marburg genes. The antisense agents were virus-specific; antisense treatment targeting Ebola virus did not protect animals against Marburg virus. Combination therapeutic studies, such as those that provided the most potent efficacy against Ebola virus, are currently underway for Marburg virus in guinea pigs.
Ricin Toxin Results
Ricin is an enzymatic toxin from the caster bean. It is composed of two peptides, one responsible for cell entry and the other for toxicity. Once inside the cell, the ricin enzyme cuts ribosomal RNA at the crucial initiation site. Without a functional initiation site, the cell cannot produce proteins, and cell death is rapid.
AVI's approach was to use NEUGENE antisense agents designed to block the ricin target site on ribosomal RNA, and therefore interfere with ricin enzymatic activity. Experiments conducted in cell-free systems indicated that ricin activity was inhibited with antisense blocking of the initiation site. In cell culture studies, where ricin was 100 percent lethal, greater than 75 percent cellular viability was achieved with antisense targeting the ricin binding site on ribosomal RNA. These preliminary results indicated that the approach was feasible and proof of principle has been established.
Anthrax Results
Anthrax is caused by toxins produced after infection with Bacillus anthracis. The anthrax lethal toxin (LT) activates host proteins that go on to trigger the apoptotic or cell-death pathway in cells that are infected. The approach that AVI and USAMRIID have taken to counter this cycle was to target host proteins that the anthrax toxin uses. In this manner, if the infected cells are inhibited from expressing the anthrax target, then apoptosis will not be induced and cell death will be reduced or prevented.
Experiments conducted in cell culture indicated that antisense targeting the relevant genes significantly down-regulated its expression, which led to increased cell survival without extensive apoptosis. Preliminary survival experiments in mice showed that almost all antisense-treated mice survived a lethal challenge with anthrax spores. Together, these experiments indicate proof of principal of the approach, and more robust experimentation is planned.
AVI's Partnership with USAMRIID
USAMRIID is the only laboratory in the DoD and one of only a few laboratories in the United States equipped to safely study highly hazardous infectious agents such as Ebola virus. Ebola virus often causes hemorrhagic fever, which historically has killed up to 80 percent of infected humans. As such, Ebola virus requires the maximum biocontainment and security, biosafety level 4 (BSL-4).
"Protecting the military and citizens from a possible bioterror threat remains an urgent and highly critical mission," said Sina Bavari, Ph.D. chief of immunology, target identification, and translational research, USAMRIID. "The results announced today not only represent important progress for the potential treatment of these deadly biothreats, but also evidence of the DoD's ability to rapidly and successfully partner with private industry to enhance our nation's biodefense efforts."
"We believe AVI's technology, which has demonstrated an excellent pharmacokinetic and safety profile in humans, may be directed against a broad range of potential biodefense threats, and we are encouraged by the results we have seen to date," said Denis R. Burger, Ph.D., chief executive officer of AVI. "Our work with the DoD allows us to develop drugs that have an important public health impact, and we are now applying our technology to address the potential emergence of avian influenza H5N1."
About Ebola Zaire and Marburg Viruses
Ebola hemorrhagic fever is a severe, often-fatal disease in humans and nonhuman primates (monkeys, gorillas and chimpanzees) that has appeared sporadically since its initial recognition in 1976. The disease is caused by infection with Ebola virus, named after a river in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) in Africa, where it was first recognized. Ebola virus and Marburg virus are the only two members of a family of RNA viruses called the Filoviridae.
Researchers have hypothesized that the first patient becomes infected through contact with an infected animal. After the first case-patient in an outbreak setting is infected, the virus can be transmitted in several ways. People can be exposed to Ebola virus from direct contact with the blood and/or secretions of an infected person.
The disease is a National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) priority A pathogen and a bioterrorism suspect agent of interest to the Department of Defense and Project BioShield. There are currently no approved treatments for Ebola.
Marburg virus was first recognized in 1967, when outbreaks of hemorrhagic fever occurred simultaneously in laboratories in Marburg and Frankfurt, Germany, and in what is now Serbia. Marburg hemorrhagic fever is a rare, severe type of hemorrhagic fever that affects both humans and nonhuman primates. Caused by a genetically unique animal-borne RNA virus, its recognition led to the creation of this virus family.
The most recent outbreak of Marburg virus started in October 2004 in Angola. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), as of Aug. 23, 2005, the Ministry of Health (MOH) of Angola had reported a total of 374 cases of Marburg hemorrhagic fever with 329 fatalities. The toll far exceeds the previous worst outbreak recorded in Angola's neighbor country, the Democratic Republic of Congo, in 1998, when 123 people died.
About Ricin Toxin
Ricin, a plant toxin from the seeds of the castor bean, is one of the most poisonous naturally occurring substances known and is poisonous to people, animals and insects.
Ricin inhibits protein synthesis by specifically and irreversibly inactivating ribosomes. These ribosome-inactivating proteins are typically monomers. However, to bind to the cell surface and enter the cell to reach the ribosomes, ricin requires a second monomer. Ricin, therefore, is a heterodimeric protein where the ribosome-inactivating enzyme, known as the A chain, is linked to the cell surface binding peptide, called the B chain. The ricin A chain of the heterodimer is the enzyme that binds and inactivates ribosomal RNA. Just a single ricin molecule that enters the cell can inactivate over 1,500 ribosomes per minute and kill the cell.
About Anthrax
Anthrax is an acute infectious disease caused by the spore-forming bacterium Bacillus anthracis. Bacillus anthracis is an encapsulated gram-positive, nonmotile, aerobic, spore-forming bacterial rod. Anthrax is most common in agricultural regions where it occurs in animals. When anthrax affects humans, it is usually due to an occupational exposure to infected animals or their products.
Three virulence factors account for majority of the clinical manifestations of Bacillus anthracis and are edema toxin, lethal toxin and an antiphagocytic capsular antigen. The lethal toxin is the most important in pathogenesis and primarily responsible for the primary clinical manifestations of hemorrhage, edema and necrosis.
In terms of bioterrorism, inhalation anthrax is the greatest concern. Case-fatality rates for inhalation anthrax are high, even with appropriate antibiotics and supportive care. Among the 18 cases of inhalation anthrax in the United States during the 20th century, the overall case fatality was greater than 75 percent. Following the bioterrorist attack in fall 2001, the case-fatality rate among patients with inhalation disease (all of whom received antibiotic therapy) was 45 percent (5/11).

I don't have the time to dig a lot inside this company's information, so I'll write what it comes up on a first glance analysis (after all, we should take the same time to buy a stock than to buy a a new refrigerator, and I don't take more than 5 or 10 minutes buying that ;D)
- In January institutions bought 8 million shares at $3, giving the company $24M in funding.
- The company has a collaborative program withe the Department of Defense
- They never said they're developing a Bird Flu vaccine, but the market is pretty much assure that they are (it is a good thing the company is not talking loud about this)
- Yesterday they had some positive news on their tests on the Ebola virus and anthrax:
AVI BioPharma Updates Results from Department of Defense Funded Collaborative Programs; NEUGENE Antisense Agents Effective at Combating Ebola and Marburg Viruses and Ricin and Anthrax Toxins (http://www.marketwatch.com/tools/quotes/newsarticle.asp?dist=¶m=archive&siteid=mktw&guid=%7B5A7B2713%2DA44E%2D424F%2D9ADF%2D6408DFD8931F%7D)
I went on looking and reading news from the past, and found this:
«"We've not put out anything public on that, but it's right up our alley," said Michael Hubbard, the company's investor relations director. "It would be a logical assumption that we would look at anything that's in our theater."»
Well, I guess «solid» is too much of an adjective for this company, what I meant by «solid» was that it has businesses outside of the Bird Flu speculation, and those businesses are supported by the Department of Defense.

Thanks LiveLife :)
AVII opened too high, then the stock came down to close the opening gap and recovered some ground by the close. I will continue holding this stock.
Heavy profit taking on AVII, no surprise, this will be a roller coaster ride, but in the end, 2 months from now, I'm positive that I will be selling these stocks much, much higher than I bought them.
The Bird Flu bubble mania is just starting. I'm on that train and won't be thrown out of the window. I see room for immense speculation and since I am a speculator, I must be in. Buy the rumor, sell the fact, even if later nothing happens one should buy now.
I'm not even a bit worried about today's sell off and I'll continue holding AVII.
UGH... cant find anything significant news, but not a fun drop.
It's never fun to see the money value go down but just remember, "the trend is your friend."
It's probably just profit taking as usual after a good run. It will eventually test the trendline support seen in David's previous chart...could be a much higher price or it could happen tomorrow. I'm not that good so I'll stick with the plan.
If it happens tomorrow just look at it as a buying opportunity.
Good luck and happy trading.
Thanks 422fwhp, I unlike dave have not learned the lesson to double down and Ibought more when it hit close resistance today. Why not get it on the bottom? Daves stocks always or atleast the majority of the time have a histroy of bouncing of resistance numerious times. and if it falls thru, Ill be there selling with ya.
Good Morning !
David will not be able to post the regular daily updates today. But he gave me instructions to Hold this position on AVII.
I'll just post an updated chart.
I see rising days with a lot of volume and interest and falling days with much less volume that look like profit taking. Why this assumption? Because if volume is low on the corrective days, it means not everybody that bought on the strong white candles is selling, just some of them taking profits, the majority of investors are buying for longer term purposes.
I'm on that camp and it looks like the corrective phase is getting to an end (not a new low today). Another powerful white marubozu will probably take AVII to new highs over the coming days/weeks.
My safety net is the ascending trendline (tomorrow at $2.90). If the stock ever closes below that line I have to admit the trend is no longer bullish and I don't want stocks in my portfolio that are not rising in value in trend terms.
October 21, 2005 09:00:07 (ET)
PORTLAND, Ore., Oct 21, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- AVI BioPharma, Inc. (AVII, Trade), today provided an update on its NEUGENE(R) antisense drug development program targeting the Influenza A (flu) virus. AVI has targeted genetic regions of the virus that are highly conserved between six viral subtypes that cause human disease. These include three subtypes that caused pandemics in the 20th century -- the 1918 Spanish flu (H1N1), the 1957 Asian flu (H2N2) and the 1968 Hong Kong flu (H3N2) -- and three subtypes of avian flu that have been reported to cause disease in man (H5N1, H7N7 and H9N2).
"Several of these NEUGENE compounds have been efficacious in early experiments and should now be considered for in vivo evaluation against H1N1 and H5N1," said Denis R. Burger, Ph.D., chief executive officer of AVI. "AVI has a successful track record of developing antisense drug candidates against RNA viruses quickly -- what we refer to as our rapid response therapeutic platform. Our antiviral program has shown that we can potentially develop a NEUGENE antisense drug candidate for avian flu in a relatively short time frame, as we did for West Nile virus, SARS coronavirus and Ebola virus."
In initial experiments, eight NEUGENE antisense compounds were developed to target regions of the influenza virus genome believed to be critical to virus survival. AVI also selected regions of the virus that are highly conserved across all six virus subtypes that cause human disease. These candidates have been tested in various viral culture assays with several collaborators, including Professor J. Chen and Quing Ge at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Several agents that were both potent and specific for Influenza A have been identified as suppressing replication of H1N1. One agent was found to inhibit both viral transcription and replication. Moreover, combinations of two agents were routinely twofold to threefold more active than single agents alone, and one combination of two agents exhibited sevenfold to eightfold improvement in viral reduction compared with a single agent.
Additional experiments showed that a single mismatch within the targeted region of the virus caused less than a 10 percent loss of activity of the drug. This provides strong evidence that a single NEUGENE antisense drug could potentially shut down all the flu virus subtypes, including the H5N1 avian flu, even if a mutation occurred in these highly conserved regions.
AVI's Antiviral Program
AVI's proprietary NEUGENE antisense drug candidates have demonstrated efficacy in preclinical studies against SARS coronavirus, West Nile virus (WNV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), dengue virus, Ebola virus, and Marburg virus. AVI has filed Investigational New Drug (IND) applications with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has ongoing clinical trials in WNV and HCV. Additional clinical development efforts targeting dengue virus and Ebola virus are planned for 2006. Compounds targeting SARS, WNV and Ebola virus were developed within days to weeks of obtaining appropriate genetic sequences. AVI has demonstrated that NEUGENE agents were efficacious against all four immunologically distinct subtypes of dengue virus. This was achieved by targeting a highly conserved region of the dengue gene. In collaborative work targeting the Ebola virus, NEUGENE drugs protected three animal species from lethal challenges with this virus.
"Studies that have shown efficacy across the four dengue viral strains demonstrate that NEUGENE antisense agents can target conserved regions of the viral genome even when the strains are immunologically separated, as appears to be the case with influenza," said Patrick L. Iversen, Ph.D., senior vice president of research and development for AVI. "We now have experience with translating effective compounds in cell culture into efficacy in viral challenge studies in animal models including coronaviruses, dengue virus and Ebola virus. This indicates that we are up to the challenge of targeting avian flu."
AVI's Clinical Experience
AVI's NEUGENE antisense platform has a well-defined safety record in human clinical trials. Approximately 250 patients have been dosed with NEUGENE drug candidates targeting host and viral gene targets in 11 clinical studies under multiple INDs. Five different routes of administration have been employed in AVI's clinical studies, and doses up to 450 mg have been administered without a single drug-related, serious adverse event. The combination of AVI's NEUGENE chemistry with conserved viral targets that are not expressed in the human genome makes a strong case for the potential for success in the development of candidates to address the possible emergence of a transmittable avian flu.

AVI BioPharma Believes Antisense Drugs Can Shut Down Replication of Flu Viruses
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- AVI BioPharma Inc. said Friday that certain combinations of its antisense drugs in lab experiments have reduced genetic replication several-fold in the virus that caused the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic that killed up to 40 million people worldwide.
The company said scientists trying several combinations of Neugene antisense drug compounds have reduced viral activity of the H1N1 virus from two- to eight-fold compared to a single agent, leading the company to believe that the compounds, or even a single compound, could be effective in shutting down different flu viruses.
The company is studying the use of antisense drugs in six types of flu virus, three of which are viruses known to cause avian flu in humans.
Antisense drugs are a class of compounds that interfere with genetic material that gets translated into harmful proteins.
AVI BioPharma shares rose 5 cents to $3.21 in midday trading on the Nasdaq.

It's strange this news didn't provide more upside to AVII, possibly the stock wasn't ready in technical terms. Reading the news it is clear that AVII is a valid avian flu play.
I want to keep on holding this stock for as long as the market agrees this is a valid play, and I measure that in an objective way by a comparison between the stock's closing price and the ascending trendline on the chart below.
Therefore, my trading plan on AVII is to hold the stock for as long as it is set to close above the ascending trendline, which for tomorrow will be standing at $2.95.

Results From AVI BioPharma's Antiviral Program Published in Two Virology Journals
Tuesday October 25, 9:00 am ET
PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 25, 2005--AVI BioPharma, Inc. (Nasdaq: AVII - News), today announced publication of preclinical research in the Journal of Virology and the Journal of General Virology. The results detail findings from studies of AVI's NEUGENE® antisense agents in cell models of dengue virus and equine arteritis virus.
"We continue to see robust preclinical data further validating the antiviral applications for our NEUGENE antisense compounds," said Denis R. Burger, Ph.D., chief executive officer of AVI. "Our dengue virus program has generated substantial results thus far, and we are moving toward the initiation of human clinical trials, which are expected to begin next year. Dengue virus is an emerging global health problem and another RNA virus well-suited to our rapid response therapeutic approach."
The first publication, in the November edition of the Journal of Virology (http://jvi.asm.org), is titled "Inhibition of dengue virus translation and RNA synthesis by a morpholino oligomer targeted to the top of the terminal 3' stem-loop structure." AVI's NEUGENE antisense agent inhibited each of the four serotypes of dengue virus. This is an important finding, as each of the four dengue serotypes can lead to separate infection.
Dengue virus is the subject of one of five AVI programs recently allocated preliminary funding from the U.S. Senate Committee on Appropriations as part of the fiscal year 2006 defense spending bill. The other four antiviral programs funded involve development of drugs to treat Ebola and Marburg viruses, and anthrax and ricin toxins.
Appearing in the November edition of the Journal of General Virology, pages 3081-3090, is a publication titled "Antiviral activity of morpholino oligomers designed to block various aspects of equine arteritis virus amplification in cell culture." This research demonstrated that virus replication could be completely inhibited by NEUGENE concentrations in the low micromolar range. An abstract of the publication is available online at http://vir.sgmjournals.org.
About Dengue Virus
Dengue fever/dengue hemorrhagic fever (DF/DHF) is an emerging complex of clinical syndromes caused by dengue viruses. DF/DHF has become a major global health problem over the past 20 years. The World Health Organization estimates that over 50 million human infections occur each year. DF/DHF has become the leading cause of hospitalization and death among children in Southeast Asia, and the incidence of infection and disease are sharply rising in the Americas as well. There is currently no commercially available vaccine or effective therapy. Medical supportive care is the recommended primary treatment to improve the condition of severely infected patients.

"Our dengue virus program has generated substantial results thus far, and we are moving toward the initiation of human clinical trials, which are expected to begin next year." Also, research in the November edition of the Journal of General Virology, titled "Antiviral activity of morpholino oligomers designed to block various aspects of equine arteritis virus amplification in cell culture," demonstrated that virus replication could be completely inhibited by Neugene concentrations in the low micromolar range.
Bingo David!!! The move is on. Let's rock!
I'm with you on this one also.
I also have a thread running on this.

AVII is clearly a Bird Flu play. But it comes in third place after NVAX and HEB.
Volume on AVII wasn't so great, because it was lower than the volume on the previous high. Anyway I think this is a valid holding, one that will see it's share price advance. Perhaps not so fast and with not so much vigour, but advancing still.
Speculation around the Bird Flu small cap group seems to be just starting, I'll let the profits run on AVII.

I knew this was weak. I considered selling to buy back lower (at the ascending trendline, which for today stands at $3.10), but I'm not such a fast trader and I don't think it will go below $3.
I'll continue to hold AVII.
This is from the moderated Yahoo message board, and quoted from a WS analyst some time ago (Richard Macary from LLC Collectibles -clipped from a repost ::) )
... we believe that AVI management has definitely made some major missteps on the partnership front,
they mishandled the expectations of investors and also entered into
some questionable financing transactions from a timing perspective
(particularly their latest PIPE deal, which seemed egregious in its
timing and structure)....
...it is rare that a technology can
eclipse the shortcomings of management, but that is exactly what we
expect to happen during 2005 with AVI...
...we believe positive results, particularly
relating to the Ebola trial, will cause a significant upward move in
the stock price (likely into the $5 to $8 range...
...AVI's success, just in
the area of bio terror agents could easily push the stock to a $500
million to $1 billion market cap by the end of 2005...
...regarding AVI's core
Neugene technology, the ramifications to the medical and biotech
communities will be historic and potentially disruptive. We realize
that such a conclusion and prediction are at odds with the perceived
reality in the industry...
Thanks for the fundamental insight into AVII SmartWrasse :)
For me AVII presents a simple trading plan: hold it for as long as the stock closes above the ascending trendline on the chart below. Today that trendline will be standing at $3.15.
I want to get away from specific stories that did well during the last decline phase from the general market.
AVII is an Avian Flu play and I'm not interested in playing this anymore, because I think the general market will rise to new highs (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?topic=3353.0), and these specific stories will be forgotten over the short term, unless something really serious happens and I don't want to trade expecting that.
So I'll sell AVII around today's open.
Hi.
Do you think that AVII is still interesting today?
I bought it at 3.19 on the 21th, and i didn´t sell it when it wen't to 4.
So, now i'm wondering if its still a good bet...
I would apreciate your opinion.
Thanks.

Finally out, pfff. Did not sell with David on the 31st. Saw his post too late and was also not able to watch the market. Saw it going down :'( :'(.
Held on because of the bird flu still being in play and hoping for some news.
Sold today for $ 4,10, making app. 20% :). Need the money for other plays 8)

Barrons covered this one.
Interesting proprietary technology and they said that the company looked good as an acquisition.
AVII is actually the strongest of the 3 Bird Flu related stocks, because it just made a 50% retracement, while the other two I used to own (NVAX and HEB), had a correction to the 61.8% retracement level.
I'm buying it back again around today's open, 6.66% of the 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio, as always.

Thanks for the info la-onda :) (applaud)
AVII didn't rose as much as the others, I think this was due to less liquidity and less notoriety.
But, as I said, AVII shows relative strength within its peers, so probably it will end up higher than the other two (well, I hope they all rise).
AVII chart seems to be developing an ascending triangle, between an ascending trendline and the recent highs. I'll be looking for a bullish breakout, and use the ascending trendline as a safety net.
The ascending trendline for today stands at $3.25, which is also a short term support, if the stock is set to close below $3.25 I'll take a small loss. If not, I'll continue holding and expecting a bullish breakout above the $4.04 - $4.11 zone.
I really don't know why, but insiders are buying stocks in NVAX, HEB and AVII, which is great. Perhaps they know something for the future we don't.
AVII was up almost 6% yesterday, and as I said, it is the strongest of the three, because its pullback stopped at the 50% retracement level, instead of the 61.8%.
The ascending trendline stands at $3.36 today, I'll continue holding for as long as the stock is set to close above this ascending trendline.
I told you AVII was the strongest of the three :) It was also down on Friday, but not nearly as much as the other two more «momentum» stocks.
Today I'm a little short in time for these updates (some problems at a personal business that I have to take care before lunch), I'll just say that the plan of holding for as long as the stock is set to close above the ascending trendline is to be kept.
Time to do a little update on this one.
Cited in Barron's as big play in the budding flu stock trade,
if Barron's is right on the potential, this could be a very big winner.
Note that the new trend is an ascending channel of higher highs and higher lows since late September.

It seems «only the strong survive and prosper». Remember to think of relative strength when you're about selecting stocks in a group, because the stronger ones usually outperform, not the ones that are down the most.
There are no news, no talk, and the stock just keeps on climbing. The highs at $4.11 are close, volume is above average, I'll keep on holding.
AVII's and NVAX's numbers in terms of revenues, losses and cash are pretty similar. There was also some recent insider buying in these two companies.
I don't know why AVII is rising, but I welcome it. Perhaps it has something to do with the $6.7B package the government is preparing for 2006 delivery to this kind of companies (http://finance.messages.yahoo.com/bbs?.mm=FN&action=m&board=7077111&tid=nox&sid=7077111&mid=89394&thr=89394&cur=89394&dir=d).
I'll continue holding AVII.
AVII's bull run persists. Probably it will break $4 when NVAX does it too, and I expect that today.
No reason to take profits here, I'll continue holding AVII.
NVAX broke out higher, but AVII didn't, it sold off 3% without any news. I would say this was profit taking. It looks like the stock is developing an ascending triangle pattern. For today the ascending trendline stands at $3.38.
I'll continue holding AVII for as long as it is set to close above this ascending trendline.
Nothing new on AVII, I'll continue holding for as long as the stock closes above the ascending trendline on the chart below, which for today stands at $3.40.
AVII declined 1.88% yesterday, looking at the chart I'm surprised that I still have a 9% profit. There was no new technical or fundamental information yesterday, I'll continue holding for as long as the stock is set to close above the ascending trendline on the chart below.
For today that trendline stands at $3.43.
AVII came down to test support and investors took the opportunity to upload some shares. Volume was pretty significant, 1.7 million shares changed hands.
The candlestick left on the chart is a bullish reversal candlestick. If this trend reversal to short term bullish confirms itself today AVII might have a shot to new highs soon.
I'll continue with my trading plan of holding AVII for as long as it is set to close above the ascending trendline on the chart below. Today that trendline sits at $3.57.
There's a long time since AVII doesn't issue a press release or an SEC filing, but since the stock is doing all right, I don't complaint.
The chart seems to be forming an ascending triangle, I hope the stock breaks it on the upside, but I don't have a clue. I took a position and now I'm managing it the way I can.
I have a hard time trying to evaluate biotech stocks, I don't know enough to value them. I already ordered two books on the subject, but still didn't have time to study them. But I will.
AVII has an ascending trendline that must continue to respect on a closing basis or I'll have to sell it. That trendline today stands at $3.50.
I wonder if AVII will get any traction from the Avian Flu bill that passed Congress this weekend (read NVAX's thread for details).
I'll continue with my plan of holding for as long as the stock is set to close above the ascending trendline on the chart below, today sitting at $3.52.
AVII came dangerously close to support levels. I'll continue with the plan of selling if the stock is set to close below the ascending trendline on the chart below.
For today that trendline stands at $3.53.
QuoteFor today that trendline stands at $3.53.
The trendline was at $3.53, the stock opened at that level and it never looked back, rising about 5%. Volume was weak, though.
AVII is quite close to it's near term highs. I'll continue holding the stock for as long as it is set to close above the ascending trendline on the chart below, looking for a bullish breakout. For tomorrow the trendline stands at $3.58.
I have about a 10% profit in AVII and I fear the stock just heads down with NVAX. I have to take whatever profits I have to secure most of this year's gains, the market is getting dangerously bearish.
I'll sell AVII around tomorrow's open.

Increased Defense-Related Funding of AVI BioPharma Approved
Wednesday January 4, 9:00 am ET
$11 Million Allocated for Development of Therapeutics for Ebola, Marburg and Dengue Viruses, and for Countermeasures for Anthrax and Ricin Toxins
PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 4, 2006--AVI BioPharma, Inc. (Nasdaq:AVII - News), today announced that President Bush has approved the final version of the 2006 defense appropriations act, which includes an allocation of $11 million to fund AVI's ongoing defense-related programs. AVI's NEUGENE® technology is being used to develop therapeutic agents against Ebola, Marburg and dengue viruses, as well as to develop countermeasures for anthrax exposure and antidotes for ricin toxin.
"This funding allocation is evidence of the success of our antiviral and biodefense programs," said Alan P. Timmins, president and COO of AVI. "We're pleased that the government has increased the funding of our programs so substantially over last year's allocation. While this allocation is less than the Senate Appropriations Committee announced in early October, the difference is understandable given the huge financial impact of Hurricane Katrina. Still, this final funding level more than doubles the funding we received through the congressional defense spending bill for FY2005, and thus demonstrates the ongoing commitment to our programs."
In 2004, AVI received a $5 million allocation for fiscal year 2005 through the Department of Defense. The funds were used to evaluate AVI's NEUGENE antisense agents against Ebola and Marburg viruses and anthrax and ricin toxins in collaboration with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID). AVI also signed a collaborative research agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) last year to test the company's NEUGENE antisense agents against all four serotypes of the dengue virus. This successful program will continue under the funding allocation for 2006.
NEUGENE antisense compounds are synthetic polymers that mirror a critical portion of a disease-causing organism's genetic code, which bind to specific portions of the target genetic sequence. Like a key in a lock, NEUGENE compounds are designed to match up perfectly with a specific gene or viral sequence, blocking the function of the target gene or virus.
About Ebola Zaire and Marburg Viruses
Ebola hemorrhagic fever is a severe, often-fatal disease in humans and nonhuman primates (monkeys, gorillas and chimpanzees) that has appeared sporadically since its initial recognition in 1976. The disease is caused by infection with Ebola virus, named after a river in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) in Africa, where it was first recognized. Ebola virus and Marburg virus are the only two members of a family of RNA viruses called the Filoviridae.
Researchers have hypothesized that the first patient becomes infected through contact with an infected animal. After the first patient in an outbreak setting is infected, the virus can be transmitted in several ways.
It is caused by a genetically unique animal-borne RNA virus, whose recognition led to the creation of this virus family.
The toll far exceeds the previous worst outbreak recorded in Angola's neighbor, the Democratic Republic of Congo, in 1998, when 123 died.
However, in order to bind to the cell surface and enter the cell to reach the ribosomes, ricin requires a second monomer. Ricin, therefore, is a heterodimeric protein where the ribosome-inactivating enzyme, known as the A chain, is linked to the cell-surface-binding peptide, called the B chain.
Anthrax is most common in agricultural regions, where it occurs in animals. When anthrax affects humans, it is usually due to an occupational exposure to infected animals or their products.
Three virulence factors account for majority of the clinical manifestations of B. anthracis: edema toxin, lethal toxin, and an antiphagocytic capsular antigen. The lethal toxin is the most important in pathogenesis and is primarily responsible for the primary clinical manifestations of hemorrhage, edema and necrosis.
In terms of bioterrorism, inhalation anthrax is the greatest concern. Case-fatality rates for inhalation anthrax are high, even with appropriate antibiotics and supportive care. Among the 18 cases of inhalation anthrax in the United States during the 20th century, the overall case fatality was greater than 75%. Following the bioterrorist attack in fall 2001, the case-fatality rate among patients with inhalation disease (all of whom received antibiotic therapy) was 45% (five of 11).
About AVI BioPharma
AVI BioPharma develops therapeutic products for the treatment of life-threatening diseases using third-generation NEUGENE antisense drugs. AVI's lead NEUGENE antisense compound is designed to target cell proliferation disorders, including cardiovascular restenosis, cancer and polycystic kidney disease. In addition to targeting specific genes in the body, AVI's antiviral program uses NEUGENE antisense compounds to combat disease by targeting single-stranded RNA viruses, including West Nile virus, hepatitis C virus, dengue virus and Ebola virus. AVI has introduced a NEUGENE-based exon-skipping technology called ESPRIT therapy. More information about AVI is available on the company's Web site at http://www.avibio.com.

AVI BioPharma Gets $11 Million of Defense Funding for Virus, Anthrax Treatments
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- AVI BioPharma Inc. on Wednesday said it has received $11 million of government funding for its ongoing development of therapeutic agents against Ebola, Marburg and dengue viruses.
The company said the funding, which follows last year's $5 million award, will also be used to produce countermeasures for anthrax exposure and antidotes for ricin toxin. The allocation was part of recently approved defense appropriations act.
Shares of AVI jumped on the news, climbing 31 cents, or 9.1 percent, to $3.70 during premarket trading on the INET electronic exchange. The stock has been moving around a 52-week range of $1.99 to $4.24 and closed at $3.39 on the Nasdaq Tuesday.

AVI BioPharma Posts Good Study Results
Tuesday January 10, 10:36 am ET
AVI BioPharma Says Its Hepatitis C Drug Proved Safe and Active in First Phase of Study
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Drug developer AVI BioPharma Inc. said Tuesday that its experimental hepatitis C treatment appeared active and safe in the first stage of a study.
The company said similar drugs developed by other companies have often been limited by serious side effects at higher doses.
AVI's shares jumped 28 cents, or 7 percent, to $4.33 in morning trading on the Nasdaq.
The drug firm tested the treatment, called Neugene, on 30 healthy volunteers at three dosage levels. AVI said there were no serious side effects, adding that the drug reached its heaviest blood concentration in about four hours after injection.
AVI said it plans to continue the study with a target dose between 100 milligrams and 300 milligrams. The company tested doses of 50 milligrams, 100 milligrams and 300 milligrams.
The second phase of the study will include up to 40 patients with chronic, active hepatitis C. The disease is characterized by liver inflammation and can eventually lead to liver cancer or failure.

AVI BioPharma Reports Favorable Safety and Pharmacokinetic Data From Its Clinical Trial Targeting Hepatitis C Virus
Tuesday January 10, 9:00 am ET
NEUGENE Antisense Compound Was Well-Tolerated and Exhibited Favorable Pharmacokinetic Parameters
PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 10, 2006--AVI BioPharma, Inc. (Nasdaq:AVII - News), today announced favorable safety and pharmacokinetic results from the first phase of its clinical trial for chronic active hepatitis C virus (HCV). The multicenter study is designed to assess the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics (PK) and viral response to daily subcutaneous administration of its proprietary NEUGENE® antisense compound AVI-4065 among healthy volunteers and patients with HCV.
"There is a large, unmet medical need for effective HCV treatments, as the current therapy is successful in less than half of the patients infected with genotype 1 HCV, the most common form of the virus in the U.S.," said Denis R. Burger, Ph.D., chief executive officer of AVI. "In addition, the current treatment regimen with interferon and ribavirin is expensive, has a plethora of side effects, and is not well-tolerated by many patients. The favorable safety and PK data reported today provide further evidence for the large potential therapeutic window for NEUGENE antisense drugs. This is in sharp contrast to previous antisense failures by other companies with other antisense chemistries, which have been primarily due to dose-limiting toxicity."
The first phase of this study has been completed by enrolling and evaluating approximately 30 healthy volunteers at three dosage levels of AVI-4065. Trial participants have received 50 mg, 100 mg or 300 mg of study drug by subcutaneous injection daily for 14 days, with each dose level evaluated for safety and tolerability, and a PK analysis conducted.
No serious drug-related adverse events occurred at any dosage level. All dosages were well-tolerated with no injection site reactions or events that required intervention. The apparent plasma elimination half-life ranged from 10 hours to 12 hours with a peak concentration at about four hours after subcutaneous injection. The PK profile suggests that the target dosage for efficacy phase of this trial will fall between the 100 mg and 300 mg dosages.
Dr. Mark Holodniy, FACP, professor of medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine and director of the Department of Veterans Affairs Public Health Research & Consultation Program in Palo Alto, Calif., principal investigator for the trial, said, "I am pleased to participate as an investigator at one of many study sites in the rigorous clinical testing of AVI's lead compound targeted to the HCV virus. The study should provide a better understanding of the compound's safety, pharmacokinetics and potential biological effects against HCV."
In addition to this clinical trial, a supporting safety and PK study has been completed in nonhuman primates. Groups of primates received daily injections of up to 40 mg/kg AVI-4065 for 28 days or about 15 times the largest human dose used, and for twice the duration. No serious adverse events, toxicities or tolerability issues were observed. Importantly, the liver accumulation of AVI-4065 was found to be approximately three times the plasma concentration. These data allowed for a direct calculation of the potential liver concentration of drug in humans from the clinical cohorts.
Together with the primate data, calculations from the first phase of the clinical study provide the basis for a dosage regimen for the second efficacy phase. The second phase will include up to 40 patients with chronic active HCV, stratified into two cohorts, one composed of patients who have not received previous treatment and the other composed of patients who have failed conventional interferon and ribavirin treatment.
The study will continue to assess the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics in addition to efficacy, as measured by HCV virological responses over a minimum of 14 days of treatment. Patients will also be monitored following treatment to assess the duration of the HCV virological response to AVI-4065. Preliminary data from the second phase of this program are expected in the first quarter of 2006.
HCV is a single-stranded RNA virus. Because HCV and other single-stranded RNA viruses have relatively simple genetic structures, they are attractive targets for AVI's NEUGENE antisense, which is designed to target conserved portions of the viral genetic code that are not likely to mutate over time.
About Hepatitis C Infection
Chronic HCV infection causes an inflammation of the liver that can result in the development of cirrhosis, liver cancer or liver failure. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 170 million people worldwide are chronically infected with HCV. It is the most common chronic blood-borne infection in the developed world and the leading cause of liver transplants in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control estimates that approximately 3.9 million Americans have been infected with HCV, of whom 2.7 million are chronically infected.
The Hepatitis Foundation International estimates that between 8,000 and 10,000 people die annually in the U.S. from HCV-related cirrhosis or liver cancer. The current treatment for HCV, 24 to 48 weeks of therapy with pegylated interferon alpha and ribavirin, is successful in less than half of the patients infected with genotype 1 HCV, the most common form of the virus in the U.S. Furthermore, this treatment has numerous side effects, some of them severe, which make it difficult for nearly half of initially treated patients to tolerate the recommended dosages and duration of treatment.

Good Luck with your trade on AVII....
Thanks for the chart work update on AVII.
There is more to AVII than meets the eye, bird flu stocks are pretty much flat on their back now.AVII is in phase I and II trials on their hepatitis C drug and finishing phase I on a cancer drug. The results of those tests are expected anytime now. IMHO, I think that a lot of this runup is because of the expected release of trials news very soon. If the trials are successful, AVII could jump again Only MHO of course.
AVII is pulling in substantial revenues and revenue growth has increased several hundred % over the last year. This is not a fly-by-night company, but a solid growth company.

Some news for AVII today:
PORTLAND, Ore., Jan 13, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- AVI BioPharma, Inc. AVII, today announced publication of significant research carried out in collaboration with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID). The report, published today in Public Library of Science (PLoS) Pathogens, a peer-reviewed monthly journal published by the Public Library of Science, demonstrates success using AVI's proprietary NEUGENE(R) antisense technology as a countermeasure to Ebola virus infection.
"Gene-Specific Countermeasures against Ebola Virus Based on Antisense Phosphorodiamidate Morpholino Oligomers" is publicly available and can be accessed from the PLoS Pathogens Web site at http://pathogens.plosjournals.org.
The extensive study results showed that a combination of Ebola-specific NEUGENE agents protected rodents in both pre- and post-exposure therapeutic regimens. In addition, in a proof-of-principle trial the investigators showed that administration of Ebola-specific NEUGENE agents before lethal exposure to the Ebola virus protected 75 percent of rhesus macaque monkeys in the trial.
"This is the first successful antiviral intervention against this class of viruses in nonhuman primates," said Patrick L. Iversen, Ph.D., senior vice president of research and development at AVI. "These findings serve as the basis for development of a whole class of gene-specific drugs that can be quickly produced in response to known, emerging or genetically engineered bioterrorism threats."
Earlier this month, AVI announced that President Bush has approved the final version of the 2006 Department of Defense Appropriations Act, which includes an allocation of $11 million to fund AVI's ongoing defense-related programs. AVI's NEUGENE technology is being used to develop therapeutic agents against Ebola, Marburg and dengue viruses, as well as to develop countermeasures for anthrax exposure and antidotes for ricin toxin.
"We are making great strides in building the credibility for our third-generation NEUGENE antisense as a highly specific gene-targeting therapy," said Alan P. Timmins, president and COO of AVI. "Today's report shows not only how effective this approach can be, but it is also encouraging for our work in treating additional viral diseases, such as chronic hepatitis C infection, which currently affects an estimated 170 million people worldwide."
NEUGENE antisense compounds are synthetic polymers designed to mirror a critical portion of a disease-causing organism's genetic code and bind to specific portions of the target genetic sequence. Like a key in a lock, NEUGENE compounds are designed to match up perfectly with a specific gene or viral sequence, blocking the function of the target gene or virus.
About Ebola Zaire
Ebola hemorrhagic fever is a severe, often-fatal disease in humans and nonhuman primates (monkeys, gorillas and chimpanzees) that has appeared sporadically since its initial recognition in 1976. The disease is caused by infection with Ebola virus, named after a river in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) in Africa, where it was first recognized. Ebola virus and Marburg virus are the only two members of a family of RNA viruses called the Filoviridae.
Ebola Zaire is a National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Disease (NIAID) priority A pathogen and a bioterrorism suspect agent of interest to the Department of Defense and Project BioShield. There are currently no approved treatments for Ebola infection.

AVI BioPharma Reports Confirmation of Efficacy against Influenza Strains
Friday January 20, 9:00 am ET
NEUGENE Antisense Efficacy against Influenza Strains, Including Avian Influenza, to Lead to IND Filing with the FDA
PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 20, 2006--AVI BioPharma, Inc. (Nasdaq:AVII - News) today announced confirmation from three independent laboratories of NEUGENE® antisense efficacy in preclinical experiments against multiple strains of influenza, including avian influenza strain H5N1.
Dr. P. Puthavathana at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand, confirmed NEUGENE antisense efficacy against an H5N1 viral isolate in her assay system.
Dr. Darwyn Kobasa at the Public Health Agency of Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba, completed an initial dose-response study in cell culture demonstrating NEUGENE efficacy against both the H1N1 and H3N2 strains.
Dr. Manoj Pastey at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore., confirmed efficacy using the same NEUGENE antisense agents against the H7N7 and H3N8 strains.
Taken together, these data confirm efficacy observed with the H1N1 strain previously reported from Drs. Jianzhu and Chen Qin Ge at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston and now represent positive reports from four laboratories using different endpoints and methodologies.
"These confirmations validate our approach to blocking replication of influenza viruses. We now believe that a single NEUGENE drug could be effective against most influenza subtypes, including the H5N1 avian strain," said Patrick L. Iversen, Ph.D., senior vice president of research and development at AVI. "By targeting regions of the viral genetic code that are common to all influenza A subtypes, we expect that our NEUGENE drugs will be effective against avian flu and the far more common influenza A viruses, which kill an average of 35,000 Americans every year."
AVI is also conducting collaborative animal studies evaluating NEUGENE efficacy against influenza strains at Tulane University in New Orleans and at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease (USAMRIID) in Frederick, Maryland.
"Based on these recent findings and other results from additional studies, AVI now plans to file an Investigative New Drug (IND) application with the FDA for the treatment of influenza A virus with NEUGENE antisense drugs," said Denis R Burger, Ph.D., chief executive officer of AVI. "We feel confident in the safety, efficacy and potency of our NEUGENE drugs targeting influenza and plan to move forward into the clinical trial process later this year."
AVI's NEUGENE antisense drug development program against the influenza A virus specifically targets genetic regions of the virus that are highly conserved between six viral subtypes that cause human disease. These include three subtypes that caused pandemics in the 20th century -- the 1918 Spanish flu (H1N1), the 1957 Asian flu (H2N2) and the 1968 Hong Kong flu (H3N2) -- and three subtypes of avian flu that have been reported to cause disease in humans (H5N1, H7N7 and H9N2).
AVI's Antiviral Program
AVI's proprietary NEUGENE antisense drug candidates have demonstrated efficacy in preclinical studies against SARS coronavirus, West Nile virus (WNV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), dengue virus, Ebola virus, and Marburg virus. AVI has filed IND applications with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and has ongoing clinical trials in WNV and HCV.
Showing how versatile NEUGENE drugs can be across viral subtypes, AVI demonstrated in its collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that NEUGENE agents are efficacious against all four immunologically distinct subtypes of the dengue virus. This outcome was achieved by targeting a highly conserved region of the dengue viral genetic code. In collaborative work with the USAMRIID targeting the Ebola virus, NEUGENE drugs protected three animal species from lethal challenges with this virus (see PloS Pathog 2(1): e1). Additional clinical development efforts targeting dengue virus and Ebola virus are planned for 2006.
The speed with which effective NEUGENE drugs can be designed and manufactured exceeds any other modern drug development timeframe. For example, NEUGENE compounds targeting SARS, WNV and Ebola were developed within days to weeks of obtaining the appropriate genetic sequences for the viruses.
AVI's Clinical Experience
AVI's NEUGENE antisense drugs have a well-defined safety record in human clinical trials. Approximately 300 patients have been dosed with NEUGENE drug candidates targeting host and viral gene targets in 12 clinical studies under multiple INDs. Five routes of administration have been employed in AVI's clinical studies, and doses up to 450 mg have been administered without a single drug-related, serious adverse event. The combination of AVI's NEUGENE chemistry with conserved viral targets that are not expressed in the human genome makes a strong case for the potential for success in the development of candidates to address influenza, including the possible emergence of a transmittable avian flu.
About Influenza A Viruses
Influenza, or flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. On average 5 percent to 20 percent of the U.S. population is infected with the flu each year. Influenza A virus is an enveloped negative-strand RNA virus, with eight genome segments that code for 10 proteins. Influenza strains are subtyped according to the antigenic and genetic nature of their surface glycoproteins: hemagglutinin (HA or H) and neuraminidase (NA or N). Fifteen H and nine N subtypes have been identified, with three associated with widespread human disease (H1N1, H2N2 and H3N2). In addition, several subtypes of avian influenza virus -- H5N1, H7N7 and H9N2 -- can infect and cause disease in humans.
The current influenza pandemic in birds throughout Asia, Eastern Europe and Turkey is caused by the H5N1 subtype. It is thought that co-infection of humans or certain animals (such as pigs) with both H1N1 and H5N1 can lead to a reassortment or recombination of viral particles, resulting in the emergence of a virus with dangerous public health properties, namely one to which the human population has no natural immunity and which has the ability to spread easily from person to person. It is believed that emergence of avian flu by this general mechanism may have led to the worldwide pandemics of 1918, 1957 and 1968.

hi,
after getting in and out of avii already twice with a profit i made a stupid mistake this morning , getting in on the open,
usually i wait to see the way the day is heading with a gap up like that . got in at 8.60 and it proceeded to go down
i could see once it went below the open it had faded the gap. now i have to decide wether to cut my loss in the morning or hold . seems like it is heading down for a few days .
oh well , there is always tomorrow ;D

Not to mention that AVII is listed one the one week and one month high volume gainer lists on MSN Power Searches. I think this stock still has ways to go. The volume spike recently is just the first wave...

AVI BioPharma and Cook Group Enter Into License Agreement to Develop NEUGENE Drugs for Vascular Diseases
Monday March 13, 9:00 am ET
Cook to Fund All Clinical Development of Three Products for Cardiovascular Restenosis and Develop Products for Peripheral Vascular Diseases
PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 13, 2006--AVI BioPharma, Inc. (Nasdaq: AVII - News), today announced that it has entered into agreements with Cook Group Inc. (Cook) for Cook's development and commercialization of products for vascular diseases. Cook has specifically licensed AVI's NEUGENE® antisense technology for down-regulating c-myc gene expression in the field of cardiovascular disease. Cook will take over clinical development of AVI's device-related programs for cardiovascular restenosis, including its Resten-NG® drug-eluting stent (DES) program, Resten-MP(TM) microparticle delivery program and its new program for catheter delivery of Resten-NG.
Cook will fully fund the development, clinical and regulatory costs of these programs in the U.S. and Europe leading to commercialization. This funding is expected to result in expenditures by Cook that could reach $100 million.
Cook has also entered into a supply agreement to purchase the drugs for development, clinical studies and commercialization from AVI. Because of the drugs' established Phase II clinical efficacy, AVI has forgone certain near-term milestone payments in favor of a double-digit royalty on worldwide product sales and a commercialization milestone. Cook will purchase 692,003 shares of AVI common stock for $5 million under a stock purchase agreement. Cook will take over AVI's facilities and personnel at its Colorado site. Additional terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
"Based upon promising Phase II clinical data in combating cardiovascular restenosis and progress in our drug-eluting stent and Resten-MP programs, AVI has now partnered its device-related cardiovascular programs with one of the pre-eminent vascular device companies in the world," said Denis R. Burger, Ph.D., chief executive officer of AVI. "Together, Cook's device expertise and AVI's antisense technology become a formidable combination to address vascular diseases on many fronts."
AVI will narrow its internal cardiovascular focus exclusively to its coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) program, which is moving into Phase II clinical trials later this year. This agreement also enables AVI to apply resources more aggressively toward the company's infectious disease program, focusing on hepatitis C and influenza A, including avian influenza type H5N1.
Resten-NG (AVI-4126) is a third-generation antisense agent that targets the key regulatory gene involved in cardiovascular restenosis, the transcription factor referred to as c-myc. It is believed that it regulates the many downstream genes which produce the pathology of restenosis, namely cell migration and adhesion, collagen formation, secretion of extra-cellular matrix, and cell proliferation, among others. The c-myc gene expression is immediately activated by the injury to the vascular lining during angioplasty and stent placement and peaks at 24 to 48 hours before subsiding. NEUGENE antisense drugs are particularly suited to prevent this process because they can be delivered immediately following injury to the angioplasty site by a variety of means including catheter and stent elution, or by systemic delivery using AVI's microparticle delivery system, Resten-MP.
"Based upon our preliminary investigation, we believe that Resten-NG (AVI-4126) has great potential for use on drug-eluting stents to reduce restenosis of stented vessels," said Bill Cook, CEO of Cook Group Inc. "AVI's NEUGENE antisense drug therapies also have potential to treat stenotic vessels systematically via catheter. Our company is honored to be a partner with AVI in the exploration of new, antisense vascular therapies."
Joseph B. Horn, AVI's vice president of cardiology who recently joined AVI from Cook, will be rejoining Cook to advance these programs through clinical development and into commercialization. While at Cook, Horn was responsible for the introduction of Cook cardiology products worldwide. In addition, Horn worked with Cook medical researchers and physicians in the management of clinical studies of new medical devices. Previously, Horn spent eight years as president and CEO for Global Therapeutics, a medical device company that he founded and which was acquired by Cook in 1998.
"I'm thrilled to be rejoining Cook with the team I've assembled to complete the mission that I started at AVI in the field of cardiology in the near term, and in all areas of vascular medicine in the longer term," Horn said. "Moving AVI's cardiovascular program forward in both Europe and the United States will be my initial priority, and I'm pleased to be surrounded by a talented team of professionals with cutting-edge technology to apply clinically. I believe this is a win-win scenario for both companies"

Investors Buy Into Bird Flu
Monday March 20, 4:48 pm ET
Bird Flu Vaccine Maker Shares Jump on Heightened Fears
NEW YORK (AP) -- As U.S. health and government officials nervously wait for the bird flu to land on U.S. soil, investors wasted no time in buying up shares of companies working on avian flu vaccines and treatments.
Shares of companies such as Novavax and Generex Biotechnology Corp., both of which hit new year-highs, must have seemed particularly attractive investments given the FDA's announcement on Monday that it has prohibited the use of human antiviral drugs on animals.
Hemispherx Biopharma Inc. shares, which have traded between $1.25 and $4.05 over the last year, closed up 44 cents, or 13 percent, at $3.87 on the American Stock Exchange. AVI Biopharma Inc. shares, which have traded between $2.05 and $9.20 over the last year, closed up 48 cents or nearly 8 percent, at $6.82.
Meanwhile, Generex shares rose 39 cents to close at $3.33 on the Nasdaq. Earlier in the session, they set a new 52-week high of $3.33.
Carrington Laboratories Inc. shares surged up 56 cents, or 8.5 percent, to close at $7.18 on the Nasdaq.
Novavax Inc. shares, which have traded between 70 cents and $7.55 over the last year, soared 95 cents, or 13 percent, to close at $8.31 on the Nasdaq.
Poultry producers as well traded higher, albeit much more modestly. Tyson Foods Inc. shares closed up 19 cents at $13.55 on the New York Stock Exchange, while Smithfield Foods Inc. shares rose 59 cents, to $28.70, also on the NYSE. Pilgrim's Pride Corp. shares were up 16 cents, at $22.32 also on the Big Board.
Another big beneficiary from the bird flu scare was pork producer Premium Standard Farms Inc., which saw its shares shoot up $1.48, or 8.5 percent, to $18.93 on the Nasdaq.
Over the weekend, avian flu infections were found in Israel, and another suspected case of avian flu was found in Egypt.
Health officials have warned that it may only be a matter of time before the avian flu hits the U.S.
A great vehicle to use as a speculative investment in a rally.
Looks like a pullback opportunity in this speculative stock, IMHO... ;D

AVI BioPharma Reports Successful Inhibition of Multiple Subtypes of Influenza A Using NEUGENE Antisense Therapeutic
Thursday March 30, 9:00 am ET
Preclinical Results by Four Independent Laboratories Summarized and Presented at Keystone Symposia: Advances in Influenza Research
PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 30, 2006--AVI BioPharma, Inc. (Nasdaq:AVII - News), today announced the presentation of research results titled "Inhibition of Multiple Subtypes of Influenza A Virus in Cell Culture with Morpholino Oligomers" at the Keystone Symposia conference "Advances in Influenza Research: From Birds to Bench to Bedside." The symposium will be held March 28 to April 2, 2006, in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
"Our presentation summarizes the results from AVI's collaborations with four independent research laboratories from around the world," said Patrick L. Iversen, Ph.D., senior vice president of research and development at AVI. "The key finding here is that our NEUGENE® therapeutics continue to show efficacy against all strains of influenza A, including H5N1, the avian influenza strain that is currently causing global concern as a potential pandemic pathogen."
The poster presentation includes results generated by researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Mass.; Mahidol University, Bangkok, Thailand; the Public Health Agency of Canada, Winnipeg, Manitoba; and Oregon State University, Corvallis, Ore.
The summary results show that AVI's NEUGENE agents targeting a highly conserved region in the genetic start-site of influenza A viruses were highly effective in inhibiting replication of multiple influenza A subtypes, including H1N1, H3N2, H3N8, H5N1 and H7N7. This suggests that a single NEUGENE agent could be developed to inhibit replication of multiple strains of Influenza A virus.
Based on these findings, as well as the results generated by additional studies in other viruses, AVI plans to file an IND application with the FDA later this year for the treatment of influenza A virus using NEUGENE antisense drugs.
About Influenza A Viruses
Influenza, or flu, is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. On average 5 percent to 20 percent of the U.S. population are infected with the flu each year, resulting in 36,000 deaths.
The current influenza pandemic in birds throughout Asia and in Eastern Europe is caused by the H5N1 subtype. It is thought that co-infection of man or certain animals (such as pigs) with both H1N1 and H5N1 can lead to a reassortment or recombination of viral particles, resulting in the emergence of virus with dangerous public health properties, namely new antigens to which the human population does not have immunity and which have the ability to spread from person to person. It is believed that emergence of avian flu by this general mechanism may have led to the worldwide pandemics of 1918, 1957 and 1968.

AVI BIOPHARMA ANNOUNCES FIRST QUARTER FINANCIAL RESULTS
PORTLAND, Ore. (May 5, 2006) – AVI BioPharma, Inc. (Nasdaq: AVII) today reported financial results for the three months ended March 31, 2006.
For the first quarter of 2006, AVI reported a net loss of $9.1 million, or $0.18 per share, compared with a net loss of $5.5 million, or $0.13 per share, for the first quarter of 2005. Results for the first quarter of 2006 include stock-based compensation expenses of approximately $1.9 million, of which approximately $1.1 million was upon adoption of SFAS 123R and approximately $830,000 related to the acceleration of the vesting of certain stock options. Results for the first quarter of 2005 do not include SFAS 123R compensation expenses since the adoption occurred at the beginning of January 1, 2006. Revenues for the first quarter of 2006 were $66,000, compared with $45,000 for the first quarter of 2005, reflecting higher grant revenues.
Research and development (R&D) expenses were $6.8 million in the first quarter of 2006, compared with $4.1 million in the first quarter of 2005. This increase was due primarily to an additional $1.1 million in employee costs, including approximately $540,000 upon adoption of SFAS 123R and approximately $430,000 related to the acceleration of the vesting of certain stock options. The increase in R&D expense also reflects $500,000 in AVI common stock issued to Chiron Corporation as the first milestone payment due under a license agreement granting AVI a nonexclusive license to Chiron's patents and patent applications for the research, development and commercialization of antisense therapeutics against hepatitis C virus, and $400,000 in contracting costs for the production of GMP subunits, which are used by AVI to manufacture compounds for future clinical trials. The remaining R&D increase was due to higher clinical trial and consultant costs.
General and administrative (G&A) expenses were $2.8 million in the first quarter of 2006, compared with $1.4 million in the first quarter of 2005. This increase was due primarily to an additional $1.2 million in employee costs, including approximately $510,000 upon adoption of SFAS 123R and approximately $400,000 related to the acceleration of the vesting of certain stock options. The remaining increase in G&A was due to higher accounting and legal costs.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AVI had cash, cash equivalents and short-term securities of $49.4 million as of March 31, 2006, an increase of $2.4 million from December 31, 2005. This increase was due primarily to the receipt of $5.0 million in net proceeds from a stock purchase agreement with Cook Group Inc. and $3.0 million from the exercise of warrants and options during the first quarter of 2006, offset by $5.3 million used in operations and approximately $290,000 used for purchases of property and equipment and patent-related costs.
In January 2006 AVI announced that the final version of the 2006 defense appropriations act had been approved, which included an allocation of $11.0 million to fund AVI's ongoing defense-related programs. AVI's NEUGENE ® technology is being used to develop therapeutic agents against Ebola, Marburg and dengue viruses, as well as to develop countermeasures for anthrax exposure and antidotes for ricin toxin. This additional funding for 2006 has not been received and has not been reflected in AVI's 2006 first quarter financial statements.
"We believe that our third-generation NEUGENE antisense technology has proven potential in many unmet and underserved medical needs, some of which represent large market opportunities. Based on our robust development pipeline, we have the strategic option to out-license development for certain indications, while using our internal resources to pursue the development of others," said Denis R. Burger, Ph.D., chief executive officer of AVI BioPharma. "Our decision to license the device-delivery of AVI-4126 targeting a single gene in the field of vascular disease to one of the pre-eminent vascular device companies in the world, Cook Group, represents our ability to execute on this strategy.
"The strategic importance of the agreement with Cook Group is several fold," he continued. "Cook has both the resources and the experience to run drug-development programs targeting vascular disease, which typically are large and expensive undertakings. Cook also has the sales and marketing resources for product commercialization. Further, with this agreement in place we are now able to more fully focus on other promising opportunities, including hepatitis C, influenza A and coronary bypass artery graphing, among other programs."
Product Pipeline Update
Technology Overview
AVI has developed proprietary third-generation NEUGENE antisense technology, which is characterized by a novel synthetic backbone. NEUGENE antisense compounds are designed to bind to specific disease-causing gene sequences to disable or inactivate the disease process. AVI believes that this chemistry allows NEUGENE antisense agents to be more stable, specific, efficacious and safer than second-generation antisense compounds in clinical development by others.
AVI's clinical development is focused in two disease categories: cardiovascular disease and infectious disease. In addition, AVI applies its technology to certain other clinical applications that it believes are particularly amenable to antisense drug development, namely, genetic disorders, inflammatory diseases and oncology.
In September 2005 the company announced a new application of its proprietary NEUGENE technology, called ESPRIT (Exon Skipping Pre-RNA Interference Technology). ESPRIT therapeutics allow for fine genetic surgery at the RNA processing level that enables the deletion of disease-causing genetic sequences or the skipping of functional sequences that are over-expressed or harmful in certain diseases. In February 2006 the company announced publication of an article in Nature Medicine indicating that AVI's ESPRIT technology
2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
may hold significant potential to bypass faulty dystrophin gene expression in patients with muscular dystrophy. The company is applying the ESPRIT therapeutic approach in genetic disorders, including a potential collaborative program in muscular dystrophy, as well as to diseases with an immunologic component, such as diabetes and multiple sclerosis.
Cardiovascular Disease Program
Resten-NG (AVI-4126) is a NEUGENE antisense drug for treating cardiovascular restenosis, the re-narrowing of a coronary artery following angioplasty. Resten-NG inhibits the expression of the c-myc gene, which plays a key role in the development of the pathology leading to restenosis. In a completed Phase II study, AVI demonstrated that Resten-NG prevented restenosis at the site of balloon angioplasty as measured by angiography and intravascular ultrasound at six months. In March 2006, AVI announced a development and commercialization agreement with Cook Group Inc., in which Cook licensed AVI-4126 for the down-regulation of c-myc gene expression in vascular diseases. This agreement covers device-delivery of Resten-NG as well as Resten-MP™, the microparticle formulation of AVI-4126, for treating cardiovascular restenosis. As part of this agreement, Cook has assumed control of the ongoing APPRAISAL Phase II clinical study, in which Resten-MP is being evaluated in the prevention of cardiovascular restenosis when delivered intravenously in conjunction with the placement of one or more bare-metal stents. In preclinical studies, Resten-MP was as effective as AVI-4126 delivered by catheters or stents in preventing cardiovascular restenosis.
AVI is focusing in house efforts on developing AVI-5126 for the treatment of coronary artery bypass grafting based on strong preclinical data. The company plans to enter Phase Ib/II development with this program during 2006.
Infectious Disease Program
AVI's infectious disease program is extensive, and encompasses research on more than 50 different viruses representing most viral families and involves collaborations with investigators worldwide. Results from these studies have enhanced AVI's ability to design effective agents for emerging as well as for engineered pathogens. AVI's antiviral research program has produced antisense drugs shown to be active in preclinical studies against a wide range of RNA viruses, including HCV, influenza A virus, West Nile virus (WNV), dengue virus, SARS coronavirus, Ebola virus and Marburg virus. AVI has confirmation through independent laboratories of NEUGENE antisense efficacy in preclinical experiments against multiple strains of influenza, including avian influenza strain H5N1, a potential worldwide public health threat.
AVI plans to focus its antiviral drug development program on infectious diseases that represent large market opportunities. The company announced in June 2005 the acceptance of an Investigational New Drug (IND) application by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of HCV using the company's NEUGENE compound AVI-4065. In September 2005 AVI announced the initiation of an HCV clinical trial to assess the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics and viral response to treatment with AVI-4065 in healthy volunteers and patients with chronic active HCV. The company reported favorable safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetic results in January 2006 from the first phase of its HCV program. AVI is currently in the second phase of the study involving patients with chronic HCV infection.
To address the large influenza commercial market, AVI has developed NEUGENE antisense drug candidates that target genetic regions of the influenza A virus that are highly conserved between the six viral subtypes that cause human disease. These include three subtypes that caused pandemics in the 20 th century – the 1918 Spanish flu (H1N1), the 1957 Asian flu (H2N2) and the 1968 Hong Kong flu (H3N2) – and three subtypes of avian flu that have been reported to cause disease in humans (H5N1, H7N7 and H9N2). Collaborators have
3
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
confirmed that a single NEUGENE drug was effective in preclinical studies against most influenza subtypes, including the emerging H5N1 avian strain. AVI plans to file an IND later this year for its NEUGENE drug for avian flu that is also efficacious against the far more common influenza A viruses, which kill an average of 35,000 Americans every year.
The company is collaborating with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in its dengue virus program, and expects dengue fever/dengue hemorrhagic fever to be the next viral program to move into clinical development.
Bio-Defense Program
AVI has an active collaborative program with the Department of Defense in the area of bio-threats and emerging diseases. In 2005 and early 2006, AVI received approximately $4.6 million for ongoing programs in drug development for the highly lethal Ebola and Marburg viruses, and countermeasures for ricin and anthrax toxins. In January 2006, the final version of the 2006 defense appropriations act was approved, which included an allocation of $11.0 million to fund AVI's ongoing defense-related programs.

AVI BioPharma Reports Preclinical Data Against Multiple Strains of Influenza
Tuesday May 9, 9:00 am ET
NEUGENE Antisense Efficacy Against Influenza Strains Reported at the International Conference on Antiviral Research
PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 9, 2006--AVI BioPharma, Inc. (Nasdaq:AVII - News), today presented positive preclinical data, resulting from preclinical experiments targeting multiple strains of influenza with NEUGENE® antisense compounds, at the 19th International Conference on Antiviral Research. The presentation, titled "Inhibition of Multiple Influenza A Subtypes with Antisense Phosphorodiamidate Morpholino Oligomers," detailed confirmatory studies by three independent laboratories, as reported previously, and presented new toxicology, pharmacokinetic and preliminary animal efficacy data.
Efficacy data observed in cell culture with the H1N1 strain, previously reported by Drs. Jianzhu and Chen Qin Ge at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has been confirmed by Dr. P. Puthavathana at Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand, against an H5N1 viral isolate; by Dr. Darwyn Kobasa at the Public Health Agency of Canada in Winnipeg, Manitoba, against both the H1N1 and H3N2 strains; and by Dr. Manoj Pastey at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Ore., against the H7N7 and H3N8 strains.
These researchers have now completed toxicology and pharmacokinetic (PK) studies in rats, as well as preliminary efficacy studies in the first of several planned animal models. The toxicology and PK studies exhibited both a favorable safety profile and plasma clearance half-life, boding well for a possible future IND filing and clinical trial. In the initial animal studies using the fertilized egg model, low doses of a single NEUGENE antisense agent protected approximately half the animals from a lethal challenge with H1N1. Additional dose escalation studies with NEUGENE antisense agents are underway, and studies to evaluate protection of mice and ferrets against both H1N1 and H5N1 strains are planned to support an Investigational New Drug (IND) application.
"We believe that a single NEUGENE drug could be effective against most influenza subtypes," said Patrick L.
AVI's NEUGENE antisense drug development program against the influenza A virus targets genetic regions of the virus that are highly conserved across six viral subtypes that cause human disease.
AVI's proprietary NEUGENE antisense drug candidates have demonstrated efficacy in preclinical studies against SARS coronavirus, West Nile virus (WNV), hepatitis C virus (HCV), dengue virus, Ebola virus and Marburg virus.
In collaborative work with the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) targeting the Ebola virus, NEUGENE drugs protected three animal species from lethal challenges with this virus (see PloS Pathog 2(1): e1). Additional clinical development efforts targeting dengue virus and Ebola virus are planned for 2006.
The speed with which effective NEUGENE drugs can be designed and manufactured exceeds any other modern drug development time frame.
More than 300 patients have been dosed with NEUGENE drug candidates targeting host and viral gene targets in 12 clinical studies under multiple INDs. Five routes of administration have been employed in AVI's clinical studies, and doses up to 450 mg have been administered without a single drug-related serious adverse event.

AVI Biopharma Drug Data Stands Up to Peer Review, Company Moves Toward Application for Flu Drug
PORTLANE, Ore. (AP) -- AVI BioPharma Inc. on Tuesday said preclinical data showing its Neugene compounds are effective in targeting flu strains stood up to peer review in independent studies, moving AVI closer to filing an investigational new drug application.
Preclinical data comes from tests on animals, not humans. The investigational new drug application would clear the way for clinical trials of Neugene to treat various flu strains.
Data showing the compounds, which target specific genes, were effective in treating the H1N1 strain of influenza were confirmed as also being effective in three separate tests on other strains of the flu.
The strains H1N1, H2N2 and H3N2 are associated with the widespread human disease that infects millions each year. The strain that has spread in bird flocks from Southeast Asia through Turkey and into Europe is H5N1; other strains of avian flus include H7N7 and H9N2.
"We believe that a single Neugene drug could be effective against most influenza subtypes," said Patrick Iversen, AVI senior vice president of research and development.
Data from 300 patients who took AVI's Neugene drugs in clinical trials to treat other viruses showed the drug to be safe, with no instances of a serious adverse event.
AVI shares rose 16 cents, or 2.4 percent, to $6.88 in recent trading on the Nasdaq. In the past year, the stock has traded between $2.05 and $9.20.

Oliver,
AVII broke out of a Symmetrical Triangle to the upside on May 9, and closed at 7.26. The next session, it had a crash opening at 5.89, breaking the Symmetrical Triangle pattern at 6.11 to the downside, putting a target of 2.84 IN PLAY. Math is on the chart.
May 26, a few days after it was announced that AVII would be included in the Biotech Index, AVII closed at 4.77, and MACD crossed above its signal line.
AVII had formed a little base over the prior two weeks, and the crash gap overhead was unfilled. Should we have taken the MACD crossover as a buy signal?
See next post.
Oliver,
The 4.77 close on May 26, the day of the MACD crossover above its signal line, was as high as AVII got. It gapped down the next day, and the 2.84 target MADE, and more.
In bearish charts like AVII and ESLR, MACD crossovers, particularly from well below zero, tend to be false "buy" signals, and they produce short-term rallies, or even occur at an exact top, as it did in AVII on May 26.
Bullish signals from indicators in charts that are bearish are suspect.
For AVII to succeed , New management is so much needed.
May have found a bottom.

Hi Melf,
Thanks for your analysis on charts like these and SVA, etc. I was wondering if the same thing is going on over at GNBT? I am basically even in it, and it looks like it may have hit a triple bottom, but I am curious about your take on it (I posted in a previous 3SOF thread called Catching the Falling Knife, btw, dont mean to derail this thread, sorry).

Dutton Associates Announces Investment Opinion: AVI BioPharma Raised To Strong Speculative Buy Rating In Update Coverage By Dutton Associates
Friday August 18, 12:00 pm ET
EL DORADO HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 18, 2006--Dutton Associates updates its coverage of AVI BioPharma (Nasdaq:AVII - News), raising its rating to Strong Speculative Buy and lowering its 12-month price target to $6.00. The 13-page report by Dutton senior analyst Stephen L. Handley is available at www.jmdutton.com, and at First Call, Bloomberg, Knobias, Zacks, Reuters, and other leading financial portals.
We continue to be impressed with the broad applicability and promise of AVI's differentiated technology in the treatment of many diseases. The stock has been quite volatile since we initiated research coverage last November, as investors have variously focused on the positive or negative implications of the news associated with one or more of AVI's products. For example, at one point there was a surge of investor interest in AVI and other companies developing products to combat avian flu, and later there was downward pressure on the stock because of a perceived setback in the development of a drug to treat hepatitis C. Indeed, it remains difficult to predict the near-term price movement for AVI as well as for most development stage healthcare companies. Nevertheless, we judge that the Company has many programs that, individually, could eventually generate significant earnings. So even though we have a near-term price target well above the current market price, we are in fact more confident about the likelihood that this stock will prove very rewarding to the long-term investor. We are raising our Speculative Buy rating to Strong Speculative Buy, while our price target, which had been raised during a period of strength in the stock reflecting our long-term optimism, is now back to our original $6.00 per share.

AVI Shares Surge on Positive Outlook

AVI Biopharma Shares Rise, Dutton Associates Analyst Points to Company's Promising Pipeline
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of biopharmaceutical company AVI Biopharma Inc. surged Tuesday, as investors agreed with a Dutton Associates report citing the company's strong pipeline of programs.
The stock gained 79 cents, or 22 percent, to reach $4.37 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq as trading volume jumped to more than four times the average. Until recently, the stock had been on a several-month decline from its 52-week high of $9.20, reached in early February. A year ago, the stock traded at a low of $2.05.
On Friday, Dutton Associates analyst Stephen Handley upgraded AVI shares to "Strong Speculative Buy" from "Speculative Buy," citing the company's breadth of programs in development. He lowered his 12-month price target to $6 from $10, however, noting the stock's price volatility and difficulty in predicting near-term pricing.
"Indeed, it remains difficult to predict the near-term price movement for AVI as well as for most development-stage health care companies," he wrote in a note to investors. "Nevertheless, we judge that the company has many programs that, individually, could eventually generate significant earnings."
AVI develops treatments for life-threatening diseases based on antisense compounds called NeuGenes. The compounds are part of a movement in gene-targeted therapy, in which the drug will target only specific gene codes for a disease. By locking onto the target, the goal is to prevent the virus from replicating and taking on genetic material from its host to replicate itself.
"The reason there's no cure for viral infections is because they borrow host genetic material," said Michael Hubbard, director of investor relations at AVI. "That's why this shift is important, we feel it's where medicine is ultimately going to go."
The company's most advanced projects deal with cardiovascular drugs to prevent restinosis, which can occur after angioplasty and threatens to close the artery. The drug candidate, called Resten, is aimed at being delivered after a stent is inserted, through microparticles. It is currently in Phase II clinical trials.
AVI is also working with the Department of Defense to develop biodefense agents for anthrax, ebola and ricin. In addition, it is working with the DOD and the Centers for Disease Control to develop a treatment for dengue fever based on its technology. While the fever isn't a domestic threat, it does represent a concern to soldiers serving overseas in developing nations.
Other treatments in either preclinical or early-stage development include those focused on hepatitis C, West Nile Virus, SARS and influenza.

Short- term Double Top at 4.48.
Double Top Target: 3.88 MADE.
The 4.48 Double Top was a failure at the down trendline off the 9.20 high (purple line). There were a couple more attempts at/above that trendline, that failed. AVII sold off 25.2% from the 4.48 high, to a low of 3.35, near its 50DMA.
That's often what occurs in charts like this, that are bearish. Quick rallies to resistance, that fail. In this case, Dutton upgraded AVII to a Strong Speculative Buy, but lowered their target from $10 to $6.
A call like that always confuses me.
??? ::) ???
It was only a speculative buy with a chance of a big gain to $10, but now it's a STRONG speculative buy, with a chance of a much smaller gain to $6.
??? ::) ???
At any rate, the recent low of 3.35 in AVII was a couple of pennies above its 50DMA, and within a couple of pennies of the 3.37 "W"-Bottom breakout. Yesterday's candle was a Bullish Engulfer on higher volume than the prior day's volume. I like that.
On Monday, the 34/55 RSIs came into Bullish Synchroncity. Yesterday's print of 3.52 around noon, a penny above Monday's 3.51 high, was a "buy pivot." I like that.
Yesterday's Bullish Engulfer was a re-test and bounce off the top of the Kumo (Cloud). I like that. (See next chart).
As awful as this chart has looked from the 9.20 top to the 2.55 low, the rally to 4.48 was a gain of 91.4%. Bear market rallies can be like that. Very sharp rallies to some level of resistance (the purple down trendline, in this case), and very nice gains.
But, what we want to see after that kind of rally, is whether "it was just a bear market rally," or if the stock can find some level of support, and if it has begun a change in trend, to bullish.
Next, we'll look at the Ichimoku Kinko Hyo chart.
Looking at the Ichimoku Kinko Hyo chart, we can see "at a glance...the table of balance" that since AVII broke below the Kumo (Cloud) in April, then left an Abandoned Baby stuck in the Kumo (Cloud), the table of balance has favored The Bears.
That changed on August 22, which was the first close above the Kumo (Cloud) since February. The 4.48 high was a Double Top basis the intraday charts, but it also was the top of a flagpole of a "possible" Bull Flag here.
Once stocks break out above the Kumo (Cloud), the top or the bottom of it "should" act as support. Thus far, yesterday's Bull Engulfer was a bounce near the top of the Kumo (Cloud) and it also was a fourth data point of the "possible" Bull Flag (pattern in blue).

AVII has been trading in this Bull Flag/Bull Channel, on either side of the big purple down trendline. A print of

AVI BioPharma Presents Positive Preclinical Data Evaluating NEUGENE Antisense Compounds Against Influenza A Virus and the E. coli Bacteria
Friday September 29, 9:00 am ET
Posters Presented at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy
PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AVI BioPharma, Inc. (Nasdaq:AVII - News), today presented preclinical data regarding the use of its NEUGENE® antisense technology against influenza A and E. coli infection. The data was presented in two posters at the 46th Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy (ICAAC) meetings held in San Francisco.
The first presentation, titled "Inhibition of Several Subtypes of Influenza A Virus with Antisense Morpholino Oligomers," was presented by AVI collaborators from Oregon State University and included data from collaborators at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology; the Public Health Agency of Canada in Winnipeg; and Mahidol University in Bangkok, Thailand. The data showed that two AVI antisense compounds inhibited several strains of influenza A, including the avian strain H5N1 in cell culture as previously reported. Experiments in mice are ongoing.
The second presentation, titled "Antisense Phosphorodiamidate Morpholino Oligomer-Peptide Conjugate: Dose-Response in Mice Infected with Escherichia Coli," was presented by AVI scientist Bruce Geller, Ph.D. The data showed that the AVI antisense compounds promoted survival in mice infected with E. coli. These antisense compounds, referred to as NeuBiotics, reduced bacteremia in mice by three orders of magnitude compared with controls.
"We believe that the diverse applications of our NEUGENE antisense technology exhibited by these presentations suggest that our technology holds promise for broad utility in battling infectious diseases," said Patrick L. Iversen, Ph.D., senior vice president of research and development at AVI. "By targeting regions of the viral genetic code that are common to all influenza A subtypes, we expect that our NEUGENE drugs will be effective against avian flu and the far more common seasonal influenza viruses. Owing to the events of the past several weeks, we are acutely aware of the importance of developing new strategies for combating troublesome bacterial infections like E. coli."

Oliver,
Yes, the gap is filled, and AVII closed about three cents above the top of the Bull Flag/Channel. These last three candles since the breakout are black, so the stock isn't holding the gains, and the breakout looks suspect.
If this is simply a gap-fill, and a re-test of the top of the channel, that's fine. But, very much more on the downside here is going to look like more weakness after the breakout, especially if the September 11 and September 25 lows of 3.35 and 3.39 get taken out.

AVI BioPharma Reports Results on Hepatitis C Virus Clinical Trial
Wednesday October 4, 9:00 am ET
PORTLAND, Ore.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AVI BioPharma, Inc. (Nasdaq:AVII - News) reported results today from the second phase of its multicenter study in patients with chronic active hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. The second phase of this exploratory trial was designed to assess the safety, tolerability, pharmacokinetics (PK), and viral and clinical response to treatment with AVI's proprietary NEUGENE® antisense compound, AVI-4065, in HCV patients. Preliminary results from this study were presented in May at the International Conference on Antiviral Research (ICAR).
AVI-4065 exhibited favorable safety and tolerability profiles in the 12 patients completing the clinical treatment phase of the protocol, with no serious drug-related adverse events or tolerability issues observed during treatment or follow-up. Consistent with the preliminary results, the therapeutic threshold required for efficacy of the drug was not achieved at the treatment dose used in this protocol.
Significant differences were observed in the plasma PK in patients compared with what was noted in healthy volunteers: notably, a longer plasma half-life (approximately 26 hours compared with 13 hours), a lower peak plasma concentration (initially 1.2 compared with 1.6 ug/ml), and a slower plasma clearance (approximately 15 compared with 40 ml/min). These observations demonstrate a direct pharmacodynamic response to HCV infection.
The peak plasma concentration (Cmax) was expected to reach the predicted therapeutic threshold of approximately 3.5 ug/ml during the treatment protocol, but rose to only 2.0 ug/ml after 14 days of therapy. With an initial Cmax of 1.2 ug/ml and final Cmax of 2.0 ug/ml, the therapeutic threshold predicted from preclinical models to be required for efficacy was not achieved.
Based on these observations, AVI does not expect a clinically relevant reduction in viral titer at the treatment dose used in this protocol; nor was one observed in the 12 treated HCV patients analyzed as a group. The trend in viral responses in HCV patients dosed subcutaneously at 100 mg twice a day for 14 days was similar to that reported in preliminary data in May, ranging from 0 to 0.8 log reduction. Of the two ways to increase Cmax to reach the predicted therapeutic threshold (increase treatment duration or increase dose), the data appear to support a significant increase in dose in order to exceed the 3.5 ug/ml predicted therapeutic threshold for efficacy.
"Although it is always disappointing not to achieve clear clinical success on an initial trial targeting a new disease, it is encouraging that we observed a significant pharmacodynamic effect that we believe can be fine-tuned to provide a clinical benefit," said Denis R. Burger, Ph.D., AVI chief executive officer. "We are fortunate that NEUGENE antisense technology provides flexibility for clinical protocol modification."
Based on these data, AVI has initiated a protocol modification to increase treatment duration. The company is also in the process of planning an additional protocol to significantly increase the treatment dose in order to exceed the therapeutic threshold predicted from preclinical models. Preclinical studies to support increasing the dose by more than tenfold have already been completed.
The first phase of this study, completed in March 2006, evaluated 31 healthy volunteers who received 14 consecutive days of treatment with AVI-4065 at three dosage levels. In the second phase of this clinical trial, patients with HCV were stratified into two cohorts, one composed of patients who had not received previous treatment and the other composed of patients who failed conventional interferon and ribavirin treatment. In addition to efficacy as measured by HCV virological responses to treatment with AVI-4065, the study assessed the safety, tolerability and pharmacokinetics of the compound.
HCV is a single-stranded RNA virus. Because HCV and other single-stranded RNA viruses have relatively simple genetic structures, they are attractive targets for AVI's NEUGENE antisense, which is designed to target conserved portions of the viral genetic code that are not likely to mutate over time.

AVI Drug Slows Pharmaceutical Breakdown
Thursday October 19, 10:51 am ET
AVI BioPharma Study Shows Neugene Could Slow Breakdown of Other Drugs in the Body
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Drug developer AVI BioPharma Inc. said Thursday a clinical trial of drug candidate Neugene may control the rate at which pharmaceuticals breakdown in the body.
The results from the study were presented at the annual meeting of the Oligonucleotide Therapeutics Society at Rockefeller University in New York.
Specifically, the study showed Neugene inhibited a metabolic enzyme responsible for the breakdown of about half of all currently marketed drugs. The findings mean the compound has the potential to reduce the amount of a drug needed for therapeutic results. Potential applications include treatments for HIV and hepatitis C, the company said.
Study results were taken from four clinical trials involving 128 people.
Shares of AVI rose 17 cents, or 4.5 percent, to $3.91 in the morning session on the Nasdaq.
**************************************************************
PORTLAND, Ore., Oct 19, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- AVI BioPharma, Inc. (AVII, Trade), today presented data and analysis from four NEUGENE(R) antisense clinical studies at the second annual meeting of the Oligonucleotide Therapeutics Society at Rockefeller University in New York. The studies showed that AVI-4557 inhibited the metabolic enzyme cytochrome P450 (CYP), a liver enzyme responsible for the metabolism or breakdown of approximately half of currently marketed drugs.
The clinical briefing, titled "Human Clinical Trials With AVI-4557 Targeting Cytochrome P450 3A4," will be presented by Patrick L. Iversen, Ph.D., senior vice president of research and development at AVI.
"This is an important collection of clinical studies that demonstrate NEUGENE AVI-4557 predictably alters the pharmacokinetic profile (PK) of two drugs in humans when administered via different routes, including oral administration," said Dr. Iversen. "Controlling the rate of drug metabolism and reducing its variability among patients has the potential to reduce the amount of drug needed to improve therapeutic results. Among the many potential applications of this approach is the treatment of HIV and HCV patients with protease inhibitors, which are primarily metabolized by CYP, the gene silenced by AVI-4557."
Cytochrome P450 comprises a family of enzymes that break down thousands of compounds in the body. CYP3A4, a subset of P450, is perhaps the most important and widely implicated enzyme in the arena of drug metabolism and disposition. AVI-4557 is a NEUGENE antisense drug designed to silence the expression of CYP3A4.
In a series of four human clinical trials involving 128 subjects, AVI showed inhibition of CYP3A4 using doses of AVI-4557 ranging from 10 mg to 300 mg as either single or repeated daily doses by intravenous, subcutaneous or oral routes of administration.
The study design included eight patients per cohort. Six patients received AVI-4557, while two received a placebo in each group. All patients were dosed with one of two well-known drugs that are metabolized by CYP3A4: buspirone (an anti-anxiety drug) or midazolam (an anesthetic drug). The PK profiles of each drug were determined before administration of AVI-4557 and again 24 hours and 72 hours after administration.
The efficacy endpoint of the study was the change in the PK of the two test drugs as measured by changes in the maximum concentration (Cmax), total concentration over time (AUC) and half-life. Significant changes in Cmax, AUC and half-life of the test drugs were observed following silencing of CYP3A4 with AVI-4557. An additional key endpoint of the studies was safety and tolerability of AVI-4557. No serious adverse events were seen in the study, and the drug's bioavailability was shown to be excellent.

A study Reference for you on the pattern.
Symmetrical Triangle (Continuation)
The symmetrical triangle, which can also be referred to as a coil, usually forms during a trend as a continuation pattern. The pattern contains at least two lower highs and two higher lows. When these points are connected, the lines converge as they are extended and the symmetrical triangle takes shape. You could also think of it as a contracting wedge, wide at the beginning and narrowing over time
While there are instances when symmetrical triangles mark important trend reversals, they more often mark a continuation of the current trend. Regardless of the nature of the pattern, continuation or reversal, the direction of the next major move can only be determined after a valid breakout.
Edwards and Magee suggest that roughly 75% of symmetrical triangles are continuation patterns and the rest mark reversals. The reversal patterns can be especially difficult to analyze and often have false breakouts. Even so, we should not anticipate the direction of the breakout, but rather wait for it to happen. Further analysis should be applied to the breakout by looking for gaps, accelerated price movements, and volume for confirmation. Confirmation is especially important for upside breakouts.
Prices sometimes return to the breakout point of apex on a reaction move before resuming in the direction of the breakout. This return can offer a second chance to participate with a better reward to risk ratio. Potential reward price targets found by measurement and parallel trend line extension are only meant to act as rough guidelines. Technical analysis is dynamic and ongoing assessment is required

Down a nice 8.3% today, but no chance to execute my short at 5.03, below 5.07 DOUBLE resistance, for a low-risk trade, at a very nice risk:reward.
5.07 is the post-Crash reaction high
5.07 also is the 200DMA
Most brokers won't allow us to get off a short on a stock that trades under 5.00. Neither of mine will. We also need an uptick to short, thus the plan to short 5.03, on a trip to 5.07, to allow some room to get filled.
The Bulls likely cottoned to the idea of a "Bear Raid" in the stock at DOUBLE resistance for a quick trade, and sold it off from well below 5.07 DOUBLE resistance, to protect profits, and to defend against it.
The high only got to 4.89 yesterday, before today's selloff.
Curses! >:D >:D >:D

Bought AVII at 3.71 . Stop: A close or late day tank below 3.56. Risk: a loss of about 5%
This morning's low is 3.72, so given the channel breakout, I'm raising my stop to a print of 3.71, which also is my entry, so that would give me a break even on the trade.
The 34/55 RSIs came into Bullish Synchronicity on Thursday, so a print of 3.83, above Thursday's 3.82 high, was a Buy Signal. Some kind of low "should be" in, at last Thurday's 3.65 low.
If this morning's low gets broken, I'm not interested in a ride back into the channel, or possibly lower. >:D

tok,
There's our Ascending Triangle breakout, on the print of 3.89. Target: 4.11 is IN PLAY.
Math:
3.88 - Highs of the Ascending Triangle
3.65 - Low of the Ascending Triangle
3.88 - 3.65 = 0.23 Points + 3.88 = Target: 4.11
I'll sell at least ½ my position at/near there, if we get it.
Good luck!

After the 4.11 target MADE, in seconds we got 4.12...4.13, then that was hit. They pulled the plug on it.

Sector Snap: Avian Flu Vaccines.......
Influenza Vaccine Makers Move After Positive Preclinical Data From Novavax
Positive preclinical results from a bird flu vaccine helped boost several companies working to develop similar technology as fears over a possible pandemic linger.
Rockville, Md.-based Novavax Inc. said Monday its virus-like particle vaccine, which mimics a virus, was effective in evoking an immune response in ferrets and protecting against the H9N2 strain. The vaccine has previously been tested in mice with the H9N2 strain of avian influenza, or bird flu.
Bird flu has now traveled through large swaths of the globe and has been reported in Asia, Africa and Europe, often resulting in large bird culls. Several other companies developing flu vaccines and listed on the Nasdaq gained during the trading session.
AVI Biopharma Inc. is working on developing Neugene to target various strains of the disease, including those that primarily affect humans, such as H1N1, H2N2 and H3N2, as well as those that have spread to bird flocks and have scientists worried they could mutate and cause a pandemic.

Analyst Firm: J.M. Dutton & Associates, LLC
Ratings Action: DOWNGRADE
Current Rating: Speculative Buy (from Strong Speculative Buy)
Target Price Action: INITIATE
Target Price: $6.00
Analyst Comments: According to the firm, AVII stock has been relatively flat thus far in 2007 and its near term price movement remains difficult to predict - as is the case for most development-stage healthcare companies. Nevertheless, they continue to be impressed with the broad applicability and promise of AVII's differentiated technology in the treatment of many diseases, and judge that the Company has many programs that, individually, could eventually generate significant earnings. However, in part because the firm has lowered their near term financial expectations and do not yet have estimates for 2008, they have extended their price target of $6.00 per share by a year, to the end of 2008.

AVI BioPharma Receives Major Research and Development Grant From Charley's Fund for Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
Monday October 15, 9:00 am ET
$2.45 Million Will Fund Research and Product Development Program
PORTLAND, Ore., & SOUTH EGREMONT, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--AVI BioPharma, Inc. (Nasdaq:AVII - News), and Charley's Fund, Inc., today announced that AVI has been awarded a $2.45 million research grant from Charley's Fund, a nonprofit organization that funds drug development and discovery initiatives specific to Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). This award, the largest grant ever made by Charley's Fund and the largest received by AVI from a nonprofit foundation, will support a new product development program using proprietary exon skipping technologies developed by AVI and its partner, Ercole Biotech, Inc., to overcome the effects of certain genetic errors in the dystrophin gene. The award will allow AVI to accelerate its development of new therapeutics for DMD, a top priority for the company.
"The technologies developed by AVI and its collaborators have incredible promise in addressing the fundamental cause of DMD: the lack of functioning dystrophin protein," said Benjamin Seckler, M.D., president of Charley's Fund. "Exon skipping offers the greatest hope for thousands of boys whose futures are in question because of this aggressive disease. We are optimistic that this research collaboration will lead to a human clinical trial in the United States to treat this generation of children with DMD."
DMD is a devastating and incurable muscle-wasting disease associated with specific in-born errors in the gene that expresses dystrophin. Dystrophin is a protein that plays an important structural role in muscle fibers. When dystrophin is missing or nonfunctional due to a mutation in the dystrophin gene, as it is in DMD, the result is membrane leakage and fiber damage, ultimately leading to degeneration and death of the muscle fiber. In two-thirds of DMD cases, the genetic mistake is hereditary, but one-third of cases arise spontaneously.
"The directors of Charley's Fund take their mission to find a cure for DMD very seriously. We at AVI are also passionate about this goal and are extremely honored by their recognition of AVI's progress with exon skipping technology," said K. Michael Forrest, interim chief executive officer of AVI. "With excellent preclinical data in hand, we believe our ESPRIT exon skipping technology holds great promise for developing products to treat this devastating disease. We look forward to getting started on the research and product development program immediately."
The focus of the funded program will be to select and develop a lead molecule, based on AVI's proprietary NEUGENE® chemistry, that is designed to skip dystrophin exon 50 to restore the proper RNA reading frame and production of functional dystrophin in patients with a particular type of mutation. This therapeutic approach is similar to that of AVI-4658, in development to potentially treat DMD patients with mutations that could benefit from skipping exon 51 of the dystrophin gene.
Funding under the Charley's Fund grant is anticipated over the next several quarters. The exon 50 candidate will be developed by AVI and its cross-licensing and collaboration partner, Ercole Biotech, under an agreement signed by the two companies in May 2007. The program brings together experts on exon skipping from around the world in a significant collaboration that may benefit the DMD population worldwide.
The technologies developed by Ercole and AVI allow manipulation of the RNA splicing process and the production by cells of clinically desirable variants of relevant proteins. AVI refers to its therapeutic approach as ESPRIT (Exon Skipping Pre-RNA Interference Technology). Ercole uses the term Splice Switching Oligonucleotide (SSO) in referring to its drug discovery platform to redirect mRNA splicing. AVI believes that its NEUGENE chemistry is particularly well-suited to modify RNA splicing.
About Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy
DMD is the most common fatal genetic disorder to affect children around the world. Children with DMD cannot produce dystrophin, a protein necessary for muscle strength and function. As a result, every skeletal muscle in the body deteriorates. There is no cure or effective treatment for DMD. Approximately one in 3,500 boys is born with DMD, and an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 children are afflicted in the United States alone.
About Charley's Fund
Charley's Fund is a not-for-profit foundation that finances therapeutics development for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The foundation's mission is to expedite a treatment or cure in time to help this generation of children who suffer from DMD. Charley's Fund targets translational research--research that moves science from the lab into human clinical trials. The 501 (c)(3) public charity was co-founded in 2004 by Benjamin Seckler, M.D. and Tracy Kramer Seckler, whose 6-year-old son Charley has Duchenne muscular dystrophy. To learn more about Charley's Fund, visit www.charleysfund.org.
About Ercole Biotech
Ercole Biotech creates and develops oligonucleotide-based RNA therapeutics that direct alternative splicing of messenger RNA, an essential cellular mechanism responsible for control of gene expression. Splice switching oligonucleotide drugs promise to become a major new class of pharmaceuticals, capable of inducing production of therapeutic proteins by the patient's own body, as well as silencing the expression of undesired proteins. Ercole's SSO technology is based on pioneering discoveries and inventions related to oligonucleotide-induced modulation of alternative splicing and RNA repair originating from the laboratory of Professor Ryszard Kole, Ph.D., at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine. See www.ercolebiotech.com for more information about the company and its drug discovery platform.
About AVI BioPharma
AVI BioPharma develops therapeutic products for the treatment of life-threatening diseases using third-generation NEUGENE antisense drugs and ESPRIT exon skipping technology. AVI's ESPRIT technology is initially being applied to potential treatments for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. AVI's lead NEUGENE compound is designed to target cell proliferation disorders, including cardiovascular restenosis. In addition to targeting specific genes in the body, AVI's antiviral program uses NEUGENE antisense compounds to combat disease by targeting single-stranded RNA viruses, including dengue virus, Ebola virus and H5N1 avian influenza virus. More information about AVI is available on the company's Web site at http://www.avibio.com.

AVI BioPharma gets Defense Dept. swine flu pact
AVI BioPharma says it will get up to $5.1M from government to work on swine flu treatments
CORVALLIS, Ore. (AP) -- AVI BioPharma Inc. says it will receive up to $5.1 million under a contract with the U.S. government to develop swine flu drugs.
AVI disclosed May 5 that it entered into the contract with the U.S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency, a section of the Department of Defense that focuses on chemical, biological, nuclear and other weapons. Under the contract, AVI will conduct preclinical development of at least one drug candidate and demonstrate it is effective by testing it on animals.
The company said it will analyze the swine flu to determine the most promising potential drugs, and make enough material to perform its tests.
AVI BioPharma Joining Russell 3000 Index...
AVI BioPharma, Inc. (NASDAQ:AVII - News), a developer of RNA-based drugs, today announced that immediately following the close of the U.S. markets today it will join the broad-market Russell 3000 Index following Russell Investments' annual reconstitution of its comprehensive set of U.S. and global equity indexes.
The annual reconstitution of Russell's U.S. indexes captures the 4,000 largest U.S. stocks as of the end of May, ranking them by total market capitalization. Membership in the Russell 3000, which remains in place for one year, means automatic inclusion in the large-cap Russell 1000 Index or small-cap Russell 2000 Index as well as the appropriate growth and value style indexes. Russell determines membership for its equity indexes primarily by objective, market-capitalization rankings and style attributes. The Russell 3000 also serves as the U.S. component to the Russell Global Index, which Russell launched in 2007.
Russell indexes are widely used by investment managers and institutional investors for index funds and as benchmarks for both passive and active investment strategies.
About AVI BioPharma
AVI BioPharma is focused on the discovery and development of RNA-based drugs utilizing proprietary derivatives of its antisense chemistry (morpholino-modified phosphorodiamidate oligomers or PMOs) that can be applied to a wide range of diseases and genetic disorders through several distinct mechanisms of action. Unlike other RNA therapeutic approaches, AVI's antisense technology has been used to directly target both messenger RNA (mRNA) and its precursor (pre-mRNA), allowing for both up- and down-regulation of targeted genes and proteins. AVI's RNA-based drug programs are being evaluated for the treatment of Duchenne muscular dystrophy as well as for the treatment of cardiovascular restenosis through our partner Global Therapeutics, a Cook Group Company. AVI's antiviral programs have demonstrated promising outcomes in Ebola Zaire and Marburg Musoke virus infections and may prove applicable to other viral targets such as HCV or Dengue viruses. Is Your Portfolio Ready for Second-Half Swine Flu Hysteria?
The death count is trending upwards and tensions over vaccines are growing - we could be in for a flu-crazed second half.
In an unnerving report today, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced that it will stop counting the individual cases of swine flu. The institution, composed of health officials from 193 nations across the globe, explained that the virus is spreading too rapidly in some areas of the world to count. According to the Centers for Disease Control's website, as of July 10, 37,246 cases have led to 211 deaths in the United States. Britain, meanwhile, estimates that its own case count escalated by 55,000 in the last week, according to the Associated Press. As warned by WHO head Dr. Margaret Chan back in May, a mutated, more dangerous form of the virus could break out this fall.
So what does all this mean for your portfolio? An Oxford Economics report released today suggests that the pandemic, made official on June 11, could lead to a -5% drop in the U.K.'s GDP over the next six months. Yesterday, President Obama committed $1.8 billion taxpayer dollars to an H1N1 emergency fund, to be used on vaccine ingredients and immunization campaigns.
Investors can follow vaccine related market-moves with the Swine Flu and Bird Flu Stocks Index. The Index is composed of vaccine-specific small-caps like Hemispherx BioPharma (AMEX: HEB - News) and Novavax (NASDAQ: NVAX - News), as well as diversified pharmaceutical giants GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK - News) and Novartis (NYSE: NVS - News). All 19 components have operations devoted specifically to the treatment, immunization, or prevention of the H1N1 virus.
An Associated Press article published yesterday warns that the fight over vaccines could get ugly when governments face the moral obligation of immunizing their own citizens before honoring international contracts. U.S. based Baxter International (NYSE: BAX - News) currently has orders from five countries for 80 million doses. According to a Reuters report yesterday, the Illinois-based company said it will have the H1N1 vaccine ready to ship by late-July or early-August, but it has stopped taking orders.
Elsewhere on the home front, Alabama-based BioCryst Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: BCRX - News) announced today that the intravenous form of its peramivir drug is not inferior to well-known Tamiflu, made by Roche (OTC: RHHBY - News). BioCryst stock is now up by 190% in the last three months, one of six in the Index that have more than doubled over the period.
Other North American players, AVI Biopharma (NASDAQ: AVII - News) and Alpha Pro Tech (AMEX: APT - News) have shot up by over 120% in the last 90 days.
As of this writing, the Swine Flu and Bird Flu Stocks Index is in the top-100 performing tickerspy Indexes over the last month, gaining 5%.
