TryStockOptions.com Stock Profile: Imax Corp. (IMAX)
Price: $3.38 (Short-term strong buy)
IMAX Corporation is one of the world's leading entertainment technology companies and the newest distribution window for Hollywood films. IMAX delivers the world's best cinematic presentations using proprietary IMAX, IMAX(R) 3D, and IMAX DMR technology. IMAX DMR (Digital Re-mastering) makes it possible for virtually any 35mm film to be transformed into the unparalleled image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience.
IMAX reported bad earnings today due to a lack of theater systems being installed and the stock took a big hit.
The stock is now severely oversold and undervalued with an RSI of 17 and a market cap of only 136 million.
Happy Feet, a CGI animated musical-comedy will released on November 17th. We think that Happy Feet will produce some impressive numbers at the box office and when they do it means IMAX will benefit.
Their are some impressive films on the company's 2007 film slate including Spider-Man 3 scheduled for release in May, and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix which will be released in July.
We believe at its current price it creates a great opportunity for a buyout.

Nice move, due in large part to the success of 300's opening weekend no doubt. Couple that with the stellar lineup they will have this summer and we might see that gap around 9.50 get closed. I would definitely be holding IMAX thru the summer. 8)

IMAX Announces 100 Screen Joint Venture Agreement
Imax Corp. (IMAX) and AMC Entertainment announced a joint
venture agreement to convert 100 of AMC's screens into IMAX
projection systems in 33 major US cities.
The agreement is projected
to double IMAX's current commercial theatre footprint in
North America and accelerates the momentum behind IMAX
and AMC's transition to digital projection technology.
According to the conference call, the agreement is based on the premise that IMAX will carry the cost of projectors and their installation which normally cost in the $500,000 range, while AMC will retrofit auditorium seating and screens to accommodate for the IMAX experience.
The rollout of the first 50 IMAX digital projection systems will begin in July 2008 at premier AMC
theatre locations in 24 of the 33 selected markets, with an additional 25 scheduled for rollout in
2009 and 25 more in 2010. The IMAX theatres are slated to be installed in many of AMC's topperforming locations in the United States, including: AMC South Barrington 30, Chicago; AMC
Mesquite 30, Dallas; AMC Gulf Pointe 30, Houston; AMC Century City 15, Los Angeles; AMC
Empire 25, New York; AMC Neshaminy 24, Philadelphia; AMC Eastridge 15, San Francisco;
AMC Hoffman Center 22, Washington D.C.
The Company noted that deal will allow IMAX to receive a percentage of net revenue. It wasn't
completely disclosed exactly what the percentage was, but a cannibalization clause was built into the deal which would protect AMC somewhat. Even so, projections have a payback period of 2.4 years for IMAX with an internal rate of return of 37.5%. With only a $500,000 investment,
IMAX is expecting to receive a total of $1.51M over a 7 year period per screen.
The projectors were noted as being the new digital line the Company had been developing. In
October of this year, IMAX announced that it had moved up the launch date of its digital projection system to mid-2008 from its previously announced anticipated timeframe of the end of 2008 to mid-2009. The highly anticipated IMAX digital projection system will further enhance The IMAX Experience and help to drive profitability for studios, exhibitors and IMAX theatres by virtually eliminating the need for film prints, increasing program flexibility and ultimately increasing the number of movies shown on IMAX screens.
On the financing the maximum amount of cash IMAX would need to complete installation was
noted as $18 million. The Company reported that while more capital would be spent during the
deal, IMAX would only need $18 million to finish the installation because cash flow would begin
following the first installations which would help the cost of subsequent costs. As of the Company's latest quarterly report, cash and cash equivalents totaled $15.98 million while short term investments were $2.192 million. The amounts cause IMAX to need additional financing but the accounts receivable balance was $22.511 million while financing receivables came in at $62.214 million, more than enough to cover the costs of the projector installations.
In addition, IMAX noted the record opening and second week numbers from their release of
Beowulf at their theaters throughout the country. Following the news, shares of IMAX opened
up 48% on strong volume. While the deal could conceivably bring the Company closer to profitability, the legitimacy and recognition the Company could receive might cause a snowball effect with other theaters adding an IMAX screen to their lineup. With that in mind, investors would be wise to watch.

Expansion and Extension of Previous JV Agreement Adds to Regal's
Significant IMAX Presence in North America
New Joint Venture Agreement Calls for Minimum of 16 Theatres,
With Potential for up to 25
NEW YORK and KNOXVILLE, Tenn., Oct. 1, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- IMAX Corporation (IMAX) and Regal Entertainment Group (RGC), today announced an expansion of the companies' joint venture agreement to include installation of an additional 16 to 25 new IMAX(R) theatres in the United States. These theatres, which are part of an amendment to the parties' original 2008 joint venture agreement, are in addition to Regal's previously committed rollout of 39 IMAX joint venture theatres, 34 of which are in currently in operation. As part of the agreement, Regal also plans to upgrade eight of its existing film-based IMAX theatres with IMAX's digital projection technology.
The companies intend to open up the new joint venture theatres by the end of 2012 in U.S. markets including such cities as Albuquerque, NM, Eugene, OR, Charlottesville, VA and Atlanta, GA. Upon completion of the full Regal IMAX theatre rollout, Regal will operate up to 77 IMAX theatres.
"It is with great pleasure that we announce the expansion of our relationship with IMAX," said Amy Miles, CEO, Regal Entertainment. "We take pride in offering our customers a unique, differentiated out-of-home entertainment experience, and we are pleased that IMAX will continue to be a key component of our premium strategy. IMAX theatres deliver an immersive presentation of unparalleled sound and image quality that command a premium price from consumers, and we look forward to bringing that premium experience to more Regal audiences across the country."
"This is an important expansion of our relationship with our long-time partner Regal that builds on the success of our existing joint venture theatres," said Richard L. Gelfond, CEO, IMAX Corporation. "Our operating history together has shown that the combination of IMAX and Regal creates premium movie going experiences that Regal movie-goers crave, and as result, yields substantial returns on investment to our joint venture. This agreement represents a potential 64% increase in our existing JV theatre commitment with Regal, paving the way for more consumers to have The IMAX Experience(R) in new domestic markets."
With today's announcement, IMAX has announced at least 198 theatre systems signings year-to-date, which compares to 35 system signings in all of 2009 and represents a new record for the most signings in a single year.
Included among the terms of the amended agreement is an increase in the length of the joint venture arrangement for all Regal IMAX theatres -- to 10 years from the previous term of seven years. The deal also includes an adjusted allocation of costs to help defray Regal's operating expenses for all of its new and existing joint venture IMAX theatres.

International Growth Is Key for Imax in 2011...
By Brian Newman Rayl
The key to IMAX's (NASDAQ:IMAX) growth outlook for the fourth quarter 2010 and full-year 2011 will be international screen growth, according to a newly issued research note from Martin Pyykkonen, Senior Equity Analyst for Wedge Partners. Box office sales were weak in the fourth quarter of 2010, but screen growth may help to offset that and actually favors IMAX somewhat.
Pyykkonen also pointed out that first quarter 2011 year-over-year comparisons would be tough due to the releases of Alice in Wonderland in Q1 2010 and Avatar released 12/18/2009 but playing through most of Q1 2010. Pyykkonen feels that the current street estimates for IMAX accurately reflect the weakened state of the film industry and tough year-over-year comparisons. These factors are not being accounted for in companies like Regal Entertainment Group (NYSE:RGC) or Cinemark Holdings (NYSE:CNK), where valuations and estimates are still too high.
For the fourth quarter 2010, Pyykkonen estimates $60.5 million in total revenue and $17 million EBITDA, both below the street mean. For Q1 2011, he sees a 14.4% decline in total revenue and $17.7 million EBITDA.
The key swing factors for IMAX in Q4 2010 and Q1 2011 will be how quickly IMAX can put in place the Joint Venture and Sale/Lease Back deals that were signed and not completed during 2010. Each 100 screens deployed can deliver approximately $28 million incremental annual EBITDA as long as they are in place and operating early in the year. Based on their guidance two months ago, IMAX will have ~450 new screens by the end of 2011, representing approximately a 20% increase for the year end 2011 vs. 2010.
The next box office catalyst in the works right now appears to be Disney's (NYSE:DIS) Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides which is due out May 20th. IMAX Box Office has performed twice as well when debuting live action films vs. family animation films since the release of Avatar.
International markets are a key footprint and box office growth driver for IMAX. At the end of the third quarter of 2010, there were about 100 screens installed or backlogged in China and 19 screens operating in Russia by the end of 2010. With low penetration in regions such as Latin America and in major international cities such as Rome, Paris, Hong Kong, and Tokyo, IMAX is still in the early stages of international expansion.
There are currently 16 commercial films scheduled for IMAX in 2011, including Tron: Legacy (released Jan 1), The Green Hornet (released Jan 14), Sanctum (Feb. 4), I Am Number 4 from Disney/DreamWorks (Feb. 18), Mars Needs Moms (March 11), Sucker Punch from Warner Bros. (March 25), Fast Five from Universal (April 29), Pirates of the Caribbean (May 20), Super 8 from Paramount (June 10), Cars 2 (June 24), Transformers 3 (July 1), the final Harry Potter (July 15), Real Steel (Oct.7), Happy Feet 2 (Nov. 18), Mission Impossible 4 (Dec. 16), and the Adventures of Tin Tin from Paramount/Sony (NYSE:SNE) (Dec. 28).
IMAX has also announced that the company intends to move their stock from the Nasdaq exchange (NASDAQ:NDAQ) to the NYSE exchange (NYSE:NYX).
