Amkor Technology Posts Fourth-Quarter Profit of $54 Million As Sales Surge 42 Percent

CHANDLER, Ariz. (AP) -- Amkor Technology Inc., a maker of semiconductor packaging, on Wednesday said it swung to a fourth-quarter profit, as sales surged 42 percent.
Shares of Amkor surged after-hours by $1.13, or about 20 percent, to $6.89. They closed the regular Nasdaq session down 11 cents, or about 2 percent, to $5.76.

Net income was $54 million, or 30 cents per share, reversing a year-earlier loss of $36.1 million, or 21 cents per share.

Results in the latest quarter included a tax benefit of $9.9 million, a gain of $4.4 million on a unit sale, and restructuring costs of $3.3 million, Amkor said.

Revenue was $643.5 million up from $453.3 million in the year-earlier quarter.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial were looking for per-share profit of 12 cents per share on sales of $624.8 million.

"Our fourth-quarter results reflect solid unit growth in strategic product areas, a richer product mix, a firmer pricing environment, and enhanced operating leverage in our newer factories," said Chairman and Chief Executive James Kim.

Amkor's losses totaled $136.9 million, or 78 cents per share, in 2005, compared with a loss of $37.5 million, or 21 cents per share, in 2004. Revenue rose to $2.1 billion from $1.9 billion.

For the first quarter, Amkor expects revenue to decline 3 percent to 5 percent from the fourth quarter -- which would suggest a range of $611.3 million to $624.2 million -- with net income of 10 cents to 14 cents per share. Analysts are projecting a loss for the period of a penny per share on revenue of $583.5 million.

Amkor Reports Record First Quarter Sales

CHANDLER, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 26, 2006--Amkor Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMKR) reported record first quarter 2006 sales of $645 million, up 55% from the first quarter of 2005 and up slightly from the fourth quarter of 2005. Amkor's first quarter 2006 net income was $36 million, or $0.20 per diluted share. For the first quarter of 2005 Amkor's net loss was $119 million, or ($0.68) per share, and included a provision for legal settlements of $50 million, or ($0.28) per share.

"I am pleased with our results this quarter and believe that the firm business conditions in Q1 have created a platform for Amkor to achieve measured, profitable growth in 2006," said James Kim, Amkor's Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "We expect that tight supply throughout the semiconductor industry, coupled with what we see as more disciplined behavior toward capacity expansion, will restrain upside production and dampen the amplitude of industry cyclicality. We believe a less volatile business environment will better enable Amkor to enrich our product mix, improve asset productivity, and increase profitability and cash flow."

"During the first quarter we saw seasonally robust demand across a broad range of end markets, with upsides for advanced packages, such as MicroLeadFrame(R), System-in-Package and 3D packages for wireless communications and consumer applications," said Kim. "Our strategic alliance with IBM continues to develop very well."

"In February we announced a strategic expansion of our electroplated wafer bumping operations in collaboration with Chartered Semiconductor Manufacturing and other customers who operate in Singapore," said Kim. "This initiative recognizes the increased adoption of flip chip packaging and the leadership position in wafer bumping technology we have gained through our Unitive subsidiary. In conjunction with our existing test operations in Singapore, Amkor will provide turnkey wafer bump and wafer probe services for leading edge applications on 300mm wafers at advanced process nodes. We believe there is strong market demand for our advanced bump and probe capabilities, and expect our wafer bumping production build-out to be largely supported by long-term supply agreements."

"First quarter sales of $645 million and gross margin of 24% exceeded our guidance as customer demand remained firm during what is typically a seasonally slow period," said Ken Joyce, Amkor's Chief Financial Officer. "We are benefiting from a focused effort on optimizing our asset allocation, improving labor and asset productivity, disciplined capacity expansion and enriching our product mix."

"First quarter gross profit includes a $4 million impairment charge primarily related to our decision to close down a camera module production line in Korea, where we have not achieved targeted returns and associated cash flows," said Joyce.

"First quarter SG&A expenses were higher than previously planned, principally attributable to greater than anticipated professional fees and increased IT-related expenses," said Joyce. "In light of stronger business conditions, we have decided to invest a portion of our increased earnings to enhance our worldwide IT systems capabilities. We are moving forward with a broad-based ERP implementation designed to ensure that Amkor has the systems infrastructure necessary to accommodate planned growth while managing an increasingly complex supply chain."

Another one that's been down for several months.  Looks like it has reached a turning point.  I will look for a bounce off a huge resistance level it has just hammered off of on above average volume.  Going against my usual MACD tells but the RSI looks solid enough to warrant a hard look if there is some bounce here from the 6.75 level.  A few positive days and a close around or above 7.25 by Thursday would warrant a very solid look and a good pick.  I will post a chart and more analysis and targets on Sunday and then follow this thing Monday and Tuesday to determine a course of action.  Very good, strong support at 6 so if this thing continues to fall, could be a great buy point there.

Coming tomorrow night, 6 month and 18 month daily charts with analysis.  Hope y'all can wait until then  ;D

Amkor Receives Nasdaq Delisting Notice Regarding Delayed Filing of Form 10-Q and Notices of Default on Debt
Tuesday August 15, 1:51 am ET

CHANDLER, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 2006--Amkor Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq:AMKR - News) today announced that it has received a Nasdaq Staff Determination notice stating that the company is not in compliance with Nasdaq Marketplace Rule 4310(c)(14) because it has not timely filed its Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q for the period ended June 30, 2006. The Nasdaq Staff Determination notice indicated that Amkor's securities will be delisted from the Nasdaq Stock Market unless Amkor requests a hearing before a Nasdaq Listing Qualifications Panel. Accordingly, Amkor will request a hearing to review the Nasdaq Staff Determination, and pending a decision by the hearing panel, Amkor's common stock will remain listed on The Nasdaq National Market. However, there can be no assurance that the hearing panel will grant the company's request for continued listing.
In addition, the Company has received letters from U.S. Bank National Association as trustee and Wells Fargo Bank, National Association as trustee alleging that the failure of Amkor to file its Quarterly Report constitutes a default under the indentures governing each of the following series of notes:

5% Convertible Subordinated Notes due 2007
10.5% Senior Subordinated Notes due 2009
9.25% Senior Notes due 2008
9.25% Senior Notes due 2016
6.25% Convertible Subordinated Notes Due 2013
7.75% Senior Notes due 2013
7 1/8% Senior Notes due 2011
2.5% Convertible Senior Subordinated Notes due 2011
The letters also allege that the failure by Amkor to cure the purported default within 60 days from the date of notice will result in the occurrence of an "Event of Default" under the indentures.

If an "Event of Default" were to occur under the indentures governing the notes described above, the trustee or holders of at least 25% in aggregate principal amount of such series of notes then outstanding could attempt to declare all related unpaid principal and premium, if any, and accrued interest on such series of notes then outstanding to be immediately due and payable. As of the date hereof, there is approximately $1.62 billion of aggregate unpaid principal outstanding of the above mentioned notes.

On July 26, 2006, Amkor announced that its board of directors has established a special committee of independent directors to review the company's historical stock option practices. The special committee is being assisted by independent legal counsel. Amkor is focusing significant effort on completing its options review in order to file its Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q on or before October 9, 2006 and thereby avoid any purported Event of Default.

Amkor Tech says 2 banks notify of potential default on notes

AMKR The Chandler, Ariz., provider of semiconductor-assembly and -test services, said it was notified by Nasdaq that its stock could be delisted. That's because it did not file its quarterly report on Securities and Exchange Commission Form 10-Q for the period ended June 30 on time. Amkor will request a hearing on the matter, and meantime its stock will continue to trade on the National Market, Amkor said. Amkor also said that U.S. Bank and Wells Fargo Bank notified the company that the failure to file the 10-Q constitutes a default under several series of notes totaling $1.62 billion. Amkor said it is currently reviewing its stock-option practices and hopes to complete that review and file its 10-Q by Oct. 9 to avoid an event of default under the notes. An event of default could entitle the holders to declare the notes due and payable, Amkor said.

Nice little gain there terliso  ;). To bad you couldnt pocket that 12% gain but it looks like you swinging on the long side so you might come out with even more. TARR reminds me alot of AMKR. I covered TARR for like a 6% profit as well and it had the same situation with TARR delaying filings sinking to low 9s and then bouncing back over 10.

Amkor Tech Up on Strong Forecast
Thursday November 9, 12:45 pm ET
By Rob Curran, Dow Jones Newswires
Amkor Technology Stock Up; Earnings, View Unexpectedly Strong

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Amkor Technology Inc. climbed Thursday, after the semiconductor-testing company posted an unexpectedly high third-quarter profit with help from strong demand.
The Chandler, Ariz.-based company also indicated a slowdown in fourth-quarter sales wouldn't be as severe as expected.

Amkor's stock rose $1.05, or 14 percent, to $8.54 in early afternoon trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Thursday's strongest level, on heavy volume, was $8.69. On a 52-week basis, there was a high of $13.09 on April 27 and a low of $4.61 on Sept. 27.

Late Wednesday, Amkor said it moved to a third-quarter profit of $52.8 million, or 27 cents a share, from a loss of $19.5 million, or 11 cents a share, a year earlier. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial had forecast, on average, earnings of about 24 cents a share.

Revenue surged 30 percent to $713.8 million from $549.6 million, amid seasonal demand from makers of wireless and mobile devices, gaming consoles and other products.

For the fourth quarter, the company expects to post per-share earnings of 20 cents to 24 cents, as compared to the 21 cents that had been expected by Wall Street.

The company also expects sales of $678.1 million to $692.4 million -- still topping the roughly $676.9 million expected by analysts.

In a research note, Lehman Brothers analyst David Egan said he expected a fourth-quarter downturn for semiconductor subcontractors after several quarters of growth because of the cyclical nature of the business. He said the assembly and testing companies were avoiding price increases that hurt business during cyclical troughs in the past.

"Looking forward, we currently believe that there is reason to think that this improved financial performance is sustainable into the downturn and over the next cycle," Egan said.

Title: AMKR catching up with the fundamentals
Post by: David Randolph on November 14, 2006, 10:31:03 AM
1. Introduction

I just want to know the reason behind the latest two enormous gaps on AMKR. I also never understood this semiconductor testing industry very well, why are they needed so much and how come they have such high revenue numbers?

If I listened to Peter Lynch or Warren Buffet, I would stay away from these things, since I don't understand the business. But I'll study the stock anyway.

2. Profile

Amkor Technology, Inc. provides advanced semiconductor assembly and test services in the United States and internationally. (complete profile here (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/pr?s=AMKR))

3. Technical Analysis
3.1. All History Chart

Another fallen angel from the tech bubble. Even on this very long term chart we can see the recent gaps AMKR had.

3.2. Medium Term Chart

As you can see on the chart above, when there's a gap at AMKR, usually the gap is left open for some time and the stock goes in the direction of the gap.

3.3. Short Term Chart

Technically the stock looks bullish. I know one needs to have a lot of courage to buy after such big gaps, but courage and doing the hard thing usually pays in the stock market.

Let's check the fundamentals ...

4. Fundamental Analysis
4.1. Number of Shares Outstanding

The company lost some of its appetite for issuing shares in about 2003, which is a positive development. The current market cap is 178,109,034*$8.85 = $1.58 B.

4.2. Liquidity

Not a great balance sheet, but acceptable.

4.3. Revenues

2006 is going to be the best year ever for AMKR in terms of revenues. Sales are picking up steam. The Price to Sales Ratio is $1.58 B/$2.73 B = 0.58. The industry average is 2.29, so AMKR indeed looks cheap.

4.4. Profits

It's easy to understand those two gaps now, AMKR is completely turning the corner and showing record revenues and strong profits. 2006 EPS is expected to come in at $0.95, so the earnings multiple is $8.90/$0.95 = 9.36. The average earnings multiple for the industry is 28.82  :o

5. General Overview

Although I'm not familiar with the semiconductor business, I can clearly see that AMKR is massively undervalued. It needs to rise 3 or 4 fold to have the same multiples as its competitors. There can be a cyclical slowdown in the future, but I don't think there's a valid reason for AMKR to be this undervalued.

The market is catching up to the rapid change in fundamentals, and not the other way around. It doesn't get much closer to a sure thing than this.

AMKR had such an incredible turn in fundamentals that the rise in the share price needs to be made in big gaps to keep up. Still way undervalued in my opinion. I want to add this stock to the 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio.

It doesn't get much closer to a sure thing than this.»

6. Trading Plan

The recommendation is to buy a portion of your capital (in the 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio's case, it is always 6.66% of equity) in AMKR shares today, below $9.27.

Well, it closed at $9.34 (the trading plan said
Quotebuy ... below $9.27
), a bit off the highs. I'm not expecting this stock to go up everyday, but I do expect it to double in 6 months or so. There were no news or any other fundamental information out yesterday, I'll continue holding AMKR whatever happens.

More volume and more upside action for AMKR. Every intraday dip is met with more and more demand. When the market tells you're right, don't rush to take profits, let the stock reward you for being right.

I've listened to the 3Q conference call and all big institutional investors, like Bank of America, Merril Lynch, Deutsch Bank, Goldman Sachs and others were there, asking many questions.

One of them was:

«Your company is valued at such a deep discount when compared to your industry peers, why do you think is that?»

The answer from the CEO was: «I think we've just lost credibility. Now we need to gain back our credibility by getting results, not by promising them».

I like this talk. And I think that, after 4 consecutive quarters that were profitable and with revenue growing, they are showing those results. And the market is responding.

AMKR would need to be a $36 stock to have the same revenue multiple as its industry average. It would need to be a $27 stock to have the Semiconductor - Industry Circuits average earnings multiple.

So, if this "credibility recovery" continues, and from what I listened on the CC, it will, AMKR will be a, say $30 stock.

There will be corrections along the way, but there's no doubt that I want to continue holding AMKR.

While AMKR has been running well lately, and continues to look strong, I am thinking that we may see a reversal and pull-back from this level.  AMKR has been hitting against key resistance at 9.70, and the 30 minute shows an ascending triangle forming that would suggest a break to the upside.  However, the MACD histo looks to be topping right now, RSI is heavily overbought, and the CCI is pulling back towards 100.  If you look at the last few times the CCI broke back down below 100 after being significantly above (green vertical lines) it preceded as substantial drop.  If it does pull back, we could see some support around 9.10-9.20, but it could also pull all the way back to the low $8 range.  I like David's longer term analysis and outlook on AMKR, but we got into this stock at relatively high levels, after it has made almost a double from lows at the end of september, which makes me concerned about letting a small profit turn into a loss here.

Yesterday's candle, and the 30-minute chart both lead me to believe tht 9.43 is key short term support.  If this gets broken, it will more than likely initialte a significant pull-back.  So, my updated trading plan on AMKR is to raise my stop to 9.40, in order to protect my position and make sure I come out with at least some gain from this.  If it does pullback, I would most certainly be a buyer at the 8.20-8.50 range.

I agree with you ScottishTrader, the short term action on AMKR looks a bit shaky. The candlestick left on Friday showed some indecision, and indecision many times leads to a reversal in short term trend.

But, thinking this way, you'll never be able to catch a meaningful move out a stock, say a 50% profit. Because, there are no 50% moves on any stock without some kind of short term weakness in between (at least not on $1B plus market cap stocks).

Remember AAPL, you were right when you bought at $40, but then you cut your profits too early because of thinking too much on the short term. Did you make more money by letting go of AAPL and start trading for short term profits?

I think AMKR is going to $30 (long term) and I'm not willing to lose my position just because of possible short term weakness - I know I can't beat the market making many short term trades on stocks, over the long run. I may beat it occasionally when I'm very precise, but unfortunately those strings don't last long.

Good luck Scottish Trader, but remember your lessons, it's more important to trade right than to make money on any particular trade !

AMKR just doesn't stop rising, to take a breather, because it is too much undervalued. Anything less than $15 is an insult after the fundamental turnaround this company had. That candlestick on Friday left some people a bit shaky on the short term (myself included), but I know you can't trust the candlesticks if you want to grab a medium term trend. Candlesticks are very short term oriented and many times they're wrong.

There's nothing else to do on AMKR than to sit tight and let the profits run.

At $8? I don't think so. My advice is for you to buy the stock and forget about short term activity. This may be your "triple of the year stock"  :)

The semiconductor sector was down 1.1% today, and AMKR was down 0.7% in sympathy. Again, the candlestick suggests there can be some red day on the chart, but I can't bet on that, since the trend is my ally in the stock market. And the trend says: «AMKR goes north».

Well David, you most certainly were right.  I raised my stop again today to 9.65, as AMKR broke down through first trendline support (light blue).  I figured I had 2 levels of horizontal support at 9.73 and 9.69 between me and my stop, but wanted to protect my profits.  And whaddya know, AMKR broke through all of those, hitting my stop and making a LOD of 9.65, again!!!  (sorry this keeps happening to me).  In fact, because I was looking at it in such a short term perspective (5-15min intraday charts)  I didn't even see that it made a perfect tag of two longer term ascending support lines (both dark blue).

But its ok, I'm not bitter (mainly because we made LOADS on CHINA today, oh and INSM too).  In fact it is clear case in point about what I need to rectify in my trading style and philosophy.  Otherwise, embrace it and go for those regluar 5% gains in stocks, but that is also a fairly high stress game with a lot of trading.  I think I need to learn the art of making my plans and then not looking at the action intra-day for a bit and getting on with all the other stuff i gotta do.  Just let things evolve.

I got a gain of 3.7% on AMKR this time, which I really don't mind, and I will be waiting for re-entry, either on a pullback if it fails again around $10, which I still think is possible, or maybe as soon as tomorrow, if it looks like these patterns are going to resolve themselves with a significant upside breakout above $10.  Today's candle looks a lot like fridays, and look what happened on Monday after that!  If AMKR breaks $10 this week, I am going to promise myself that I will sit on it and let things develop, because if it does break $10, I think you could well be right on this one.  ;)

It looks like AMKR is consolidating the recent gains without any meaningful move down. Volume is down and the price is almost steady. Usually a violent move follows this kind of narrow activity.

Since the trend is up I expect this move to be up, although an inexperienced trader could think it should be down when looking at the chart. Of course, even inexperienced traders are sometimes right on the market ;D

I'm thinking, these updates are getting too short term oriented, because, after all, I'm here to comment on 1 day's trading action. But is there anything to comment, really?

I should do these updates differently, I'll try to remember this tomorrow. For now I'll just say I'll continue holding AMKR.

Above $10 now after another white marubozu with 1.9 million shares changing hands. The SOX went down 0.61% on Friday, yet AMKR was up 4.45%.

This is called relative strength.

AMKR is so easy from a fundamental standpoint ... EPS for full year 2006 is estimated at $0.95 and for 2007 estimates are for $0.98. But, the stock is trading at $10.33, so the earnings multiple is absurd (since the industry's earnings multiple is 31).

The stock is catching up with the fundamentals, but of course, it doesn't go up in a straight line, from one point to another. Fundamentally, AMKR is worth $30.

Excellent breakout for AMKR  above key $10 resistance  ;D  As I mentioned before, I was somewhat foolish to get stopped out of this one, but corrected this and got back in.

Was just having a look at the long term weekly (semi-log) charts and it looks like next key resistance in this move should come in at 10.80, so keep an eye on the action when we get to that level.  Beyond that there should be significant resistance at $13 and $16-16.30.  My long term target for this move would be the top of the channel, which currently comes in around $18, but more than likely would be substantially higher if we actually touch this trendline.  I also like the strong uptick in the Acc/Dist (bottom).

Volume was low this week relative to the previous 2, as AMKR churned its way through the $9 level (and we only had 3.5 trading days).  I would expect volume to pick up again next week, as this comes up on hot $10+ trading radars, and with the possibility of further institutional exposure.  I am now planning to let this run for a bit and see how it goes.  I'm not going to yet, but I think it shold soon be safe to raise stops to close to $10 for this trade.

Volume is picking up steam again on AMKR, with 5.3 million shares traded today. It's on its way up to $30 !

hehe, I shouldn't say these things, because nobody knows if something happens and I'll be forced to sell with a loss. It will be easier to get out in that case if I didn't say anything about the long term.

On the other hand, if I don't say "attention, $30", I guess some of you guys will sell with a 15% or 20% profit and miss the whole ride. I need to transmit confidence when I feel it. And I'm very confident on AMKR, just buy and hold this one.

Perhaps this news explains a bit of the "lack of credibility" the CEO talked about on the latest conference call: Former Amkor counsel charged with insider trading (http://biz.yahoo.com/bizj/061201/1384427.html?.v=1)

But this is past now.

Nice washout on Friday, with the stock down 7.6% intraday. It closed down 3.5%, above the $9.78 short term support and with volume above average of 6.7 million shares.

Nothing technical will make me sell AMKR, only fundamental. Fundamentals are extremely attractive, I'll continue holding AMKR.

I certainly welcome today's rally on AMKR, especially after Friday's tough sell off. It sure looks like the stock had its shake out day and is ready to climb above the $10.47 short term resistance level soon.

I believe they got 1 or 2 points out of 20. I want the twenty points, because I can both be right and sit tight.

The stock traded above the short term resistance level of $10.50, but it couldn't sustain those levels due to the general market weakness.

Longer term these fluctuations are meaningless and I'm in for the big pull. Overtime $10.50 will look like a cheap spot to be long, at least this is my expectation.
Title: Re: Nevermind the gaps: AMKR
Post by: David Randolph on December 09, 2006, 06:41:43 AM
AMKR is still trading within the $9.78 - $10.50 consolidation range. Bears took it down more than 3% intraday, but it recovered all the losses for a positive close. I like that.

Anyway, it doesn't mean much. AMKR needs to rise 200% to be fairly valued by the market, in comparison with its peers, not counting on general market rises and possible multiple expansions going forward.

I'm still making just 11.7% on AMKR, but I expect this number to double before the end of the year ... because all those institutional investors holding the stock that I heard on the conference call have the tendency to push their stocks near the end of the year, to present an even rosier picture on their annual reports to investors.
Title: Re: Nevermind the gaps: AMKR
Post by: David Randolph on December 12, 2006, 02:13:53 AM
AMKR showed relative weakness yesterday, going down 3.19% while the general market rose 0.23%. This would be a concern if I were a short term trader. But being a long term investor, I have to see it as normal, because no stock ever makes a big move without some periods of weakness along the way.

Technically the stock is still stuck on the $9.78 - $10.50 trading range. I expect it to break this range on the upside and I'll continue holding it.

Nope. It closed at $9.72. But perhaps $9.45 is an even more important short term support for AMKR.

I know I bought the stock after a big short term rise, so some consolidation was to be expected. But fundamentals say the stock is worth $30 (the company made EPS of $0.59 in the 9 months so far in 2006, analysts (and I) expect it to deliver EPS of $0.95 for the full year), and technicals are still supportive, so I'll continue holding AMKR.
Title: Re: Nevermind the gaps: AMKR

AMKR is a different play than CHINA, completely different. CHINA was a long term growth story (but, as we've seen on my last update to the stock, I made two today, please notice that, growth isn't strong enough to justify the current valuation) and AMKR is a market inefficiency story.

Just looking at the competitor's table below you'll see that AMKR is undervalued:

Technically the stock hit the $9.45 horizontal support level, if that goes it may meet the 50 days SMA, but I'll continue holding AMKR whatever happens over the short term.

AMKR didn't release any news over the past couple of weeks and the stock continues to trade within the $9.45 - $10.5 range.

I'll continue holding this way undervalued (as you can see on the rest of this thread) Semiconductor company.

Title: Re: Nevermind the gaps: AMKR
Post by: David Randolph on December 19, 2006, 04:16:38 PM
AMKR is doing its best to shake all weak hands out of it before resuming its bullish trend. Today was symptomatic, with the stock breaking the $9.45 support on an intraday basis and then clawing back up to close 1.6% higher on the session.

Volume ticked up to more than 3 million shares. There was this positive press release out, but at first sight it doesn't look all that much significant:

• Amkor Licenses Lead-Free Wafer Bumping Technology to AMD (http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/061219/20061219005315.html?.v=1)
Business Wire (Tue 7:30am)

What is significant is the recent turnaround in fundamentals, from big losses to big profits. The company already made an EPS of $0.59 this year and analysts expect $0.95 for the full 2006. If this materializes it will put the stock trading with an earnings multiple of 10.3, and the Semiconductor - Integrated Circuits average is 29.

There are some discrepancies on estimates, for example, 4th quarter estimates are for $0.22 EPS only, and that would put fiscal 2006 EPS at $0.81, instead of $0.95. Yet, even if the company only makes $0.81, the earnings multiple would then be 12, still way below the industry average of 29.

This company is making all the right steps, moving operations to China and Singapore:

«During the quarter we commenced operations in our new Singapore wafer bump factory and our new factory in Shanghai. Fixed costs associated with these new factories should be absorbed as we build revenue over the next several quarters.»

More from their latest 10-Q form:

«Our third quarter net income was $52.8 million, or $0.27 per diluted share, versus a net loss in the third quarter of 2005 of $(19.5) million, or ($0.11) per share. In the three months ended September 30, 2006, sales increased $164.2 million or 29.9% to $713.8 million from $549.6 million in the three months ended September 30, 2005. The sales growth was driven by strong demand for high performance applications, cell phones and other portable devices. During the third quarter of 2006, we experienced strong growth in flip chip and 3D packaging services and test services which is consistent with the investments we made in these areas over the past two years.»

This is an undervalued company benefiting from strong world economic growth. I think it is worth $30 a share with the current fundamentals, as you can see on the rest of this thread.

I'll keep on studying and holding AMKR.

AMKR closed a touch below the $9.45 support level. You know how I think the stock is undervalued, so I believe the current correction is just a normal consolidation phase.

I compare this consolidation with the previous one, as you can see on the chart below. They're pretty similar (even more if I use semi-log scale, but I prefer normal scale). My fundamental assessment of the stock, as you can read on the initial analysis, is bullish, so I continue to expect a similar outcome as the one that happened after zone 1 on the chart.

Despite the recent share price weakness, the chart is still bullish and there wasn't any change in the fundamentals. The current correction is healthy and to be expected. I'll continue holding AMKR.

AMKR had a small day, both in terms of intraday range and volume. But still, a 1.06% rise on the day, which I welcome. We have the 10 days SMA providing a bit of a short term resistance, perhaps waiting for the 50 days SMA to catch up.

Fundamental analysis (please read the initial analysis (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?topic=7302.msg77071#msg77071)) tells me the stock will make a move above $12 when this consolidation phase is over.

The graph below partially explains why AMKR is undervalued and bound to go higher after the current consolidation phase ends:

You can see how revenues have been growing on a quarterly basis (3Q was the best quarter in the company's history) and gross margin has been kept stable around 35%. This means growth has been well handled by AMKR's management.

Comparing AMKR's growth with its industry (Semiconductor - Integrated Circuits) average, it's hard, if not impossible, to explain the discount the stock is trading, when considering the Price to Sales Ratio differential.

The stock doubled over the last three months. So, given the fundamentals, I believe the current share price weakness is just due to short term profit taking. When this consolidation is over, perhaps when the stock touches its ascending 50 days simple moving average, I see it running to $12 or more.

I'll continue holding AMKR.

Finally, the long awaited AMKR's bull phase seems to have started. If the stock is able to close above $10.50 the sky will be clear for a run to $12 - $13 over the short/medium term.

I believe, given the fundamentals, this will be outcome.

You did well La-Onda, congrats :)

I think the time to be bearish is when the market starts heading down on good news for the US economy, not when, as it has been happening, the market is going up in the face of negative expectations for consumer spending.

Economist's expectations are for a soft landing as the best case scenario. I believe people will be positively surprised going forward. The market has been telling that since the July lows.

Of course, corrections, small and big, may occur, but we're in a bull market as any long term chart of the S&P 500 shows. I guess Americans are a little puzzled to see the rest of the world (mainly China), coming up as a very relevant player in the global economy. They feel they will lose their leadership role. But the global economy isn't an industry, everybody gains when another country joins the development road.

In short, the bull case is: there are 3 billion new consumers and investors showing up in the global economy. This is the first time this happens in the world history, until now, the Chinese, the Indians, the Russians and the South Americans were relatively incipient in economic terms. Not anymore. This is a huge breakthrough in the world economic history, and every country in the world will benefit (some more than others, but the sum of parts is bigger than the parts). I believe the US economy, especially US businesses which have this natural capitalistic tendency to go global, will be big gainers of the current global development process.

I wouldn't want to miss what can be an even bigger bull market than the last one, that lasted from 1982 to 2000, by being "somewhat" bearish. But of course I respect and like to listen to other's views.

AMKR chart looks great. Fundamentals too. Analysts are expecting EPS of $0.95 for 2006, so the trailing earnings multiple is something like 10.7. The Semiconductor - Integrated Circuits industry earnings multiple average is 30. It couldn't be easier, I guess, AMKR stock should triple to be valued at average.

I'll continue holding AMKR.

AMKR scheduled the date for its earnings release:

• Amkor Technology Announces Date of Fourth Quarter Earnings Conference Call (http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/070109/20070109005367.html?.v=1)
Business Wire (Tue 9:30am)

It's just on February the 7th, so there's plenty of time to think about those quarterly results.

In the meantime the stock should continue discounting what has been a remarkable fundamental turnaround within the company (Q3 was the best quarter ever, both in revenue and net income terms).

Analysts expect full year EPS of $0.95, so the PER is just 11. The Semiconductor - Integrated Circuits industry average is 30.

Technically the stock reached $10.50 again today. Everything is set for a bullish breakout. I'll continue holding AMKR.

QuoteTechnically the stock reached $10.50 again today. Everything is set for a bullish breakout.

Indeed, AMKR had the expected bullish breakout, closing above $10.5, as you can check on the chart below.

There's some controversy about Q4 numbers, because the average estimate for that quarter is EPS of $0.22, but the full year 2006 estimate is $0.95 (you can find these estimates here (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ae?s=AMKR))

The problem is AMKR made just $0.59 for the nine months until September. So, if Q4 EPS is $0.22, the full year number will be $0.81, below the $0.95 full year estimate.

I still don't know why this happens (but I'll find out before earnings). I wasn't much worried about this issue because both numbers are great.

If AMKR makes $0.81 the PER is 14, so the stock is trading with a 52% discount (it needs to rise more than 100% to get to the industry earnings multiple average).

If it makes $0.95, the discount to the industry average would be even bigger, at 59%, so AMKR share price would need to increase by 145% to get to an average valuation.

100% or 145% on top of my current 14% profit are both fine by me :)

But I want to know why the discrepancy and what to expect for the quarters after Q4 2006.

For now my patience is being compensated, with the stock breaking out to new highs.

Things look strong for Q1 & Q2.
Fundamentals show positive improvements.
Support is around $9.86
Stock looks like it will test $13's and head higher by summer.
The balance sheet looks like its improving since they invested $200 million in new facility in 2005.
Semi stocks are improving and sector looks like its poised. INTC and MOT will rally by summer, even after they dipped last week.
I like the Chart on INTC..... ;D Just had to mention it here.... ;)

Now isn't the time to study or think anymore, it is time to sit tight and let the market reward the men who thought right and bought this stock.

It is starting to reward, but we want full pay. I'll continue holding AMKR.

J.P. Morgan Raises Ests On Semi Consumables Stocks WFR, AMKR, ENTG, FORM, CCMP

Posted by Eric Savitz
J.P. Morgan's Christopher Blansett today raised earnings estimates on a bunch of companies that supply consumables to the semiconductor industry, includiing MEMC Electronics Materials (MEMC), Amkor (AMKR), Entergis (ENTG), FormFactor (FORM) and Cabot Microelectronics (CCMP). In a research note on the consumables companies, he reports that he sees a 13% increase in wafer starts in 2007, similar to the growth in 2006, driven mainly by memory chip demand.

Here are some of his comments on the individual companies.

MEMC: We expect MEMC to sequentially raise gross margins throughout the year in conjunction with its non-vertically integrated semi wafer competitors, Shin-Etsu and SUMCO, which are likely to pass on their increased polysilicon costs to their customers. We expect polysiliconcosts may increase as much as 20% [year-over-year] due to the continued supply/demand imbalance. He raised his 2007 estimate to $2.85 a share, from $2.70.

Amkor: Raising 2007 EPS to $1.34 from $1.19, "to reflect our improved 2007 outlook."

QuoteAmkor: Raising 2007 EPS to $1.34 from $1.19, "to reflect our improved 2007 outlook."

That's great la-onda, average estimates for 2007 were just $0.98, but rose to $1 because of this upgrade from JP Morgan.

If JP Morgan is right AMKR would then be trading with a forward earnings multiple of 8.35, and the Semiconductor - Integrated Circuits industry average is 30.

But as importantly, this takes out a bit of concern about a 2007 slowdown. After the latest conference call some analysts expressed concerns about 2007.

Hopefully this upgrade will give a boost to AMKR shares, the trend is certainly bullish, I'll continue holding the stock.

It didn't, but I don't care. I've been holding AMKR through the ups and downs because it is massively undervalued when compared to its industry peers and I'm quite positive that valuation gap will be closed in the future. The stock has been going up, but of course it doesn't go up everyday, just in trend terms.

Unfortunately AMKR is back below $10.50, due to a general market and especially semiconductor slump today, with the $SOX down 3.9%.

Expected EPS for 2007 is $1, which gives AMKR an earnings yield of 9.67%. This is attractive by all means.

The technical trend, given by the 50 and 200 days moving averages, remains bullish.

I'll continue holding AMKR.

The small doji on Friday's session might be indicative that the very short term declining trend on AMKR is coming to an end.

Earnings will be released on February 7th. Analysts expect $0.22 EPS and $683.75 M revenues for the 4th quarter. That will put full year EPS at $0.81 for fiscal 2006.

For fiscal 2007, analysts estimates are for $1.

So, the trailing earnings multiple is 12.7 and the forward earnings multiple is 10.3. The Semiconductor - Integrated Circuits industry average earnings multiple is 28.

My take is AMKR is this undervalued because its fundamental picture turned too fast and unexpectedly, so the share price now needs to catch up. It is doing that, sometimes with big gaps, but of course, it doesn't go up everyday or every week, as the new information gets assimilated in waves.

I'll keep holding AMKR.

Back below $10.50 by a touch, so the $10.5 technical level is losing significance.

AMKR is a company trading at just 10 times 2007 estimated earnings and its industry, the Semiconductor - Integrated Circuits, trades at 26 times earnings. I don't see a valid reason for such a deep discount (the only one being that fundamentals turned too fast and unexpectedly, so the stock, although being up about 100% over the last 3 months, is still catching up to the dramatic change in fundamentals).

I'll keep holding AMKR.

Nice volume of 3.2 million shares changing hands on AMKR this Friday. The stock is back above $11.

But I think it is worth something like $30, as you can read on the rest of this thread. I wonder if it will make another gap up above $12 when it reports 4th quarter results this Wednesday.

Hi la-onda, those upgrades usually don't work on AMKR, remember when JP Morgan upgraded the stock?

But perhaps the upgrades come from the company whispering that 4th quarter results will beat expectations, we'll know about that today after the close.

Estimates are calling for 22 cents EPS on $683.75 M in revenues.

I see AMKR as trading at a deep discount relative to its industry peers and I'll hold through earnings. I expect it to gap up over the $12 resistance level at tomorrow's open, that would be the perfect technical development.

Amkor Reports Fourth Quarter Sales and Record Full Year 2006 Sales and Net Income
Wednesday February 7, 4:10 pm ET

CHANDLER, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Amkor Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMKR - News) reported fourth quarter 2006 sales of $683 million, up 6% from the fourth quarter of 2005 and down 4% sequentially from the third quarter of 2006. Amkor's fourth quarter 2006 net income was $59 million, or $0.30 per diluted share, compared with net income of $54 million, or $0.30 per diluted share, in the fourth quarter of 2005 which included a $9.9 million tax benefit.

For the full year 2006, Amkor's net sales were a record $2.7 billion, up 30% over 2005. Amkor's full year 2006 net income was a record $170 million, or $0.90 per diluted share. For 2005, Amkor had a net loss of $137 million, or ($0.78) per share, which included a charge of $50 million for legal settlements.

"One year ago we commenced a process of refocusing Amkor for long-term success, with a commitment to streamline our corporate organization, enhance operational effectiveness, improve profitability and strengthen our cash flow," said James Kim, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. "During the past year our management team kept a sharp focus on these objectives. We maintained a disciplined approach to capital spending; we enriched our product mix; we leveraged our technological leadership; we significantly increased our Flip Chip related business; we successfully expanded our test and bumping capabilities in Singapore; we are building scale in China; we improved gross and operating margins; and we continued to reposition our capital structure and reduce debt.

"I am pleased with the operating performance we achieved in 2006 and the corresponding improvement in our financial results. We have made excellent progress in reaching our objectives and I believe we have established a solid foundation for long-term profitable growth," said Kim.

"Our fourth quarter saw continued strong demand in 3D package solutions and Flip Chip packages for high performance applications, including all three major game consoles, networking and communications modules, offset by a decline in demand for packages supporting wireless and other mobile devices," said Kim. "Our test business strengthened during the fourth quarter as we continued to build scale in Singapore and increase our capabilities in Korea."

"Following an extended period of exceptionally strong growth, we expect to experience a seasonal decline in the first quarter of 2007," said Kim. "As we go through 2007, we will continue to exercise discipline in our capital investments, with an ongoing focus on improving our productivity, building our capabilities in technology and key growth areas, and strengthening our IT systems. I believe this will position Amkor to achieve sustainable profitability and generate positive free cash flow, which should allow us to further de-lever our capital structure."

"While fourth quarter sales were in the mid range of guidance, our gross margin of 25.3% was better than expected, principally as a result of a change in product mix," said Ken Joyce, Amkor's Chief Financial Officer.

"Our growth in Flip Chip business during the quarter was partially masked by a mix-shift, as a greater proportion of substrates were consigned by customers, instead of procured by Amkor. The associated reduction in materials reduced the average selling price for Flip Chip packages but increased gross margin."

"SG&A expenses for professional fees associated with the investigations of our historical stock options granting practices were approximately $2.5 million in the fourth quarter, compared with $10.2 million in the third quarter," said Joyce. "During the fourth quarter, we also increased our employee bonus and profit sharing accruals in recognition of our improved financial performance. Excluding the impact of these adjustments, fourth quarter SG&A was up slightly from the third quarter."

"Capital additions totaled $55 million in the fourth quarter and $299 million for the full year. Our capacity expansion has been focused on strategic growth areas, including wafer bump, wafer level packaging, Flip Chip and test," said Joyce. "We are currently targeting first quarter 2007 capital additions of $70 million and full year capital additions in the range of $250 - $300 million. We are prepared to adjust these figures depending on business conditions."

"We have achieved positive free cash flow for the past five quarters, and given our current view of business conditions, we anticipate this trend should continue throughout 2007," said Joyce. "We plan to use existing cash resources to retire the remaining $142 million in 5% convertible notes at maturity in March 2007."

For 2007, we anticipate an effective tax rate of 10% which reflects the utilization of U.S. and foreign net operating loss carryforwards and tax holidays in certain of our foreign jurisdictions. At December 31, 2006, Amkor had U.S. net operating losses available for carryforward totaling $363 million expiring through 2025. Additionally, at December 31, 2006, we had $51 million of non-U.S. operating losses available for carryforward, expiring through 2011.

Selected operating data for the fourth quarter 2006 is included in a section before the financial tables.

Business Outlook

On the basis of our customers' forecasts, we have the following expectations for the first quarter of 2007:

Sales down 4% to 8% from the fourth quarter of 2006
Gross margin of approximately 22% to 23%
Net income in the range of $0.13 to $0.18 per diluted share

Thanks for posting AMKR results basonista :)

QuoteBut perhaps the upgrades come from the company whispering that 4th quarter results will beat expectations, we'll know about that today after the close.

Estimates are calling for 22 cents EPS on $683.75 M in revenues.

The company beat estimates for EPS, which were $0.22 and the reported numbers were $0.30. Sales were just a touch below estimates, at $683 M vs $683.75 M expected.

Full year EPS was $0.90, so the stock's trailing earnings multiple is 13.3 versus the industry average of 29.

The stock was down 3.43% in after hours trading due to guidance for the 1Q 2007:

«Business Outlook

On the basis of our customers' forecasts, we have the following expectations for the first quarter of 2007:

--  Sales down 4% to 8% from the fourth quarter of 2006

--  Gross margin of approximately 22% to 23%

--  Net income in the range of $0.13 to $0.18 per diluted share»

But, analyst's average forecast was already calling for this slowdown in Q1, since revenues were expected to come in at $638.37 and EPS average estimate for that quarter was $0.15. If we consider the midpoint of the numbers the company is giving us now, we get $642 M in revenues and EPS of $0.155, so, a bit higher than expectations.

Overall, I think the company is on track to meet or beat the $1 EPS estimate for full year 2007, so the forward earnings multiple is about 11.5.

That's too cheap, the stock should at least double from current levels.

I'll continue holding AMKR.

Absolutely. It may go down some more, I'm not sure about the short term, but in a couple of months I see the stock trading above $12. People selling today don't know what they're doing, they just read "lower guidance, sequential revenue and earnings drop" and sell, but this outcome was already priced in. After profit taking and misinformed selling, the stock will be up again.

That has been the trend, and trends usually persist.

Yesterday's decline was due to selling because of the headline saying AMKR expected a sequential 4 - 8% revenue drop and EPS of $0.13 - $0.18 for Q1 2007, below the $0.30 reported in Q4 2006.

But this was actually slightly above expectations (if we consider the midpoint of guidance), which were for a 6.6% revenue decline and EPS of $0.15 for the quarter.

Revenue Expectation = $638.67 M ------> Midpoint of guidance = $642 M
EPS expectation = $0.15 ------------------> Midpoint of guidance = $0.155

The company is on track to meet or beat the 2007 revenue and EPS estimate, and that makes it, in my opinion, about 60% undervalued.

I'll keep holding AMKR, expecting it to breakout above the $12 resistance level.

AMKR's 2006 results were the best since 2000, when the stock was trading at $65 .

For the fiscal 2007 analyst's estimates are calling for EPS of $1.01 and for fiscal 2008 of $1.25. Since AMKR closed on Friday at $11.17, the 2007 earnings multiple is 11.06 and the 2008 earnings multiple is 8.94.

This is too cheap in my opinion. The stock should at least double to the low 20's to reflect the recent change in fundamentals and prospects. Well, it has been trending higher.

I'll keep holding AMKR.

AMKR is still building its ascending triangle pattern. I believe in a month from now AMKR will be clearly trading above $12.

Please quote this message on the 13th of March if I'm wrong, because I want to know if I'm wrong.

Thanks. In the meantime, to keep on holding AMKR is the right thing to do.

Friday was a non event for AMKR, as the stock closed practically unchanged on below average volume.

Fundamentally, the people that sold after the earnings release due to "lower guidance" were wrong and should pay the price (or at least not get the reward) as the stock breaks out above $12.

But AMKR is already a $2.11 B market cap company, so it doesn't move all that fast, one need to be patient with it. I'll be patient and I'll keep on holding AMKR.

AMKR is about to breakout above the $12 resistance level. The technical target of such breakout is ($12-$9.64)+$12 = $14.36 (doesn't mean much).

Fundamentally I believe AMKR is worth something like $30 and I'll continue holding the stock.

AMKR continues to play with the $12 resistance level on low volume. My take is it will breakout on the bullish side, due to the ascending triangle pattern and the quite attractive fundamentals.

Yes, closed at $12.07. Hopefully this will drive people to buy/cover shorts, because this stock is way too undervalued, as you can read on the rest of this thread. I'll continue holding AMKR.

David AMKR is a better pick then IMOS for the semiconductors in your opinion?

I work for a semiconductor company that utilizes Amkor for assembly of packaged microchips. Amkor has been quite responsive, precise and diligent. They compete with Ambit and ASE, all in Taiwan, I believe. Amkor builds for large volume customers, like RFMD (if you own Nokia phone or Motorola Sliver, it most likely comes with a front-end RF device from RFMD). I can see Amkor business grow a lot as, for instance, my employer can potentially have a large win at Intel in 2007 that smells millions of packaged parts built at Amkor. I just bought the stock at $12... didn't have the money earlier, unfortunately.

I believe AMKR has less risk and less upside potential than IMOS. Overall I believe AMKR is a superior pick for the Main Portfolio in the semiconductor space, because it is almost as cheap and has the comfort of being a US company reporting all the necessary SEC files for me to make a fair evaluation of the business. But IMOS has more potential, because it is a much smaller company and it is growing faster.

Good luck on both :)

The stock closed for the second day above the $12 resistance level on volume above average, further confirming the technical breakout. Fundamentally the company is on track to meet or exceed the 2007 EPS estimate, which stands at $1.01.

Amkor Tech's billionaire boss might be worth still more if he treated public shareholders with more respect.

Grand theory: you should own stocks of companies with big insider positions. The managers can make themselves rich only by making you better off, too. The prime example is Berkshire Hathaway (nyse: BRKA - news - people ), run by Warren Buffett, number two on our world rich list.

Exception to the rule: Amkor Technology (nasdaq: AMKR - news - people ). This should be a winner. It's the world's second-largest (2006 sales: $2.7 billion) semiconductor assembly and test firm, and it has a big insider stake. Chief Executive James Kim, 71, along with his family and related trusts, owned 46% of the common stock as of July 2006. That stake represents half of the Kim family's $2 billion estimated net worth, putting them at number 488 on our list of the world's richest people.

The Kims are extracting a nice stream of cash from Amkor. But the public shareholders are faring badly. The shares have fallen 13% since they were first offered to the public nine years ago, a period when the Nasdaq climbed 29%.

Here's the perverse result: Putting the family's interests ahead of those of public shareholders seems to have made the Kims poorer, not richer. The bad vibes on Wall Street have kept shares of Amkor to 12 times this year's expected earnings, versus an average multiple of 20 for its rivals. The difference now equates to $700 million in Kim family net worth.

Kim started Amkor in 1968 as the American sales and design partner of Anam Industrial (now Anam Semiconductor), a Korean semiconductor manufacturing services outfit founded by his father. In 1998 tech was hot and Amkor had $1.6 billion in sales, with earnings growing at a 26% annual clip. In the public offering in May of that year Kim unloaded 5 million shares for a gain of $55 million.

In 1999 Anam Semiconductor was in financial trouble. Amkor bailed it out by buying a factory in South Korea from Anam for $582 million. A year later Amkor spent $1.4 billion, most of it borrowed, in purchasing three more of Anam's factories, increasing its equity stake in Anam to 42% from 18%. Borrowing left Amkor in a weak position to deal with the downturn that hit the semiconductor business in 2001. Over the next few years Amkor divested its equity stake in Anam at a loss of $172 million and wrote down the value of its factories by $190 million.

In some ways Amkor behaves more like a private financing vehicle for the Kim family than like a public company. In 2005 it spent $19 million on contracts with members of the Kim family and companies owned in part or whole by Kim himself. That year Amkor handed out a $6 million contract to Kim's brother for catering services and a $500,000 engineering deal to another brother.

Kim installed his 37-year-old son, John T. Kim, Amkor's onetime investor relations boss, on the company's board in 2005. JooHo Kim, James' brother, is corporate vice president of the systems group. Until last year JooHo Kim and his family owned 58% of Anam Information Technology, which in 2004 sold $1.2 million of computer components to Amkor.

Last October Amkor announced it took a $106 million hit to earnings to make up for backdated stock options. In December federal prosecutors charged Amkor's former general counsel with making $290,000 in avoided losses and earnings by trading with inside information. (The lawyer has pleaded not guilty and is awaiting trial.)

In 2005 the lucky James Kim was permitted to buy $100 million in convertible notes paying 6.25% from Amkor. He can swap the notes at any time until 2013 for 13.4 million shares, currently worth $160 million. There were few other financing options available, says an Amkor spokesman. (Kim declined to be interviewed for the story.)

"Executives owning this much stock puts too much power in one set of hands," says Paul Hodgson, senior research associate at the Corporate Library, which gives Amkor a grade of D for corporate governance. "It makes it very difficult for the board to act independently." And, it seems, unbridled power can be a mixed blessing for insiders trying to build wealth.

AMKR looks like it still wants to break out of that ascending triangle formation, despite a nervy day on friday, it managed to rally well into the close.  Clear resistance at 12.15, the target of this pattern, should it break out would put 14.50 in play.

Math: 12.15 - 9.75 (base of the triangle) = 2.40 =+ breakout target 14.55.

ScottishTrader? This thing really looks like it wants to break out. Range today from 11.88 to 12.20 and closes .2 higher than previous close. You still looking at 12.15 as the resistence? Amkor Technology initiated with "neutral"

NEW YORK, March 13 (newratings.com) - Analysts at Credit Suisse initiate coverage of Amkor Technology Inc (AMKR.NAS) with a "neutral" rating. The target price is set to $12.75.

In a research note published yesterday, the analysts mention that the company has a unique business model, as compared to that of its peers in the back-end equipment market. The higher level of buyout activity is expected to boost the multiples of sub-contract manufacturers going forward, the analysts say. The unit cycle is likely to be bottoming in 1Q, Credit Suisse adds.

Here's a table with the stocks I've sold in 02-28-2007 and didn't buy back, with the respective change since then:

You can see there are winners and losers. It could be perceived as natural that I should now go after the stocks that are below my selling price, since that would confirm the rightness of the selling decision, but no, I want the winners, because those are the stocks the market is rewarding. I'm not worried about being right in the past, what I want is to be right in the future, and the stocks that are up are the one's that give me more confidence of continuing to go up, as trends persist and fundamental prospects are probably better on those stocks.

I also made a video analysis yesterday confirming AMKR is a sound long term investment, with an expected average annual return on investment of 20%:

The trading plan is:

Buy AMKR, 6.66% of capital as always.

Thanks for the information. I view this as a significant limiting factor to AMKR's stock price. For a worst case scenario, go back and look at the history of Adelphia, which was a cable company which the owner family took public and then continued to use as a personal bank. the owners went to jail, the company went bankrupt and was eventually bought out. The situation laid out in the article can place a big drag on the stock price, inspite company growth.   Distrust of self serving owners/managers is currently very strong and is likely to remain so for a long time to come.
I bought AMKR this morning but will rethink the postion after further study.

Trade relaxed, trade happy, trade well

Hold Your Nose And Buy It.......

Bernie Schaeffer, chairman and CEO of Schaeffer's Investment Research and editor of the Option Advisor newsletter, recommends taking a long position in semiconductor packaging and test services company Amkor Technology

AMKR's testing procedures verify semiconductor function, current, timing and voltage. Some of the company's customers include Altera (nasdaq: ALTR), Freescale Semiconductor (nyse: FSL), Intel (nasdaq: INTC), IBM (nyse: IBM) and Texas Instruments (nyse: TXN).

Last month, the Chandler, Ariz.-based company reported a 9.5% rise in fourth-quarter earnings to $59 million on a 6.1% increase in revenue to $683 million. For all of 2006, net income was $170.1 million, or 90 cents per share, compared to a loss of $137.2 million, or 78 cents per share, in 2005. Revenue grew 6% to $2.73 billion.

Amkor has provided a bumpy ride for shareholders, peaking above $65 nearly seven years ago on March 24, 2000, then trading as low as $1.13 on Sept. 24, 2002, during the bear market. It recovered to $21.87 on Jan. 21, 2004, but by May 2005, it had retreated 86% to $3. It rallied again to $13 last spring, but dropped to $5 in early October. In the past five months, however, AMKR is up nearly 150%, closing Tuesday at $11.55.

Even though founder and billionaire James Kim has hardly run the company with an eye toward exemplary corporate governance. Amkor has been destructive of shareholder value since coming public in 1998--Schaeffer believes that there are catalysts to drive the stock higher.

"A combination of positive earnings surprises and strong technical momentum in the shares could attract momentum players," he says, "while its price-to-earnings ratio of less than 13 may attract valuation players, who might see value in the security when comparing AMKR's P/E ratio to the industry average of 30."

He points out that the shares leaped higher on the firm's positive earnings news and continued to rally along the support of their 10-day moving average. Short sellers are also trying to call a top to the security's rally. The number of AMKR shares sold short increased by more than 3% in February, to 12.6 million.

"This accumulation of bearish bets accounts for roughly 10% of the security's float and is almost four times the stock's average daily trading volume," he says. "An unwinding of these pessimistic positions could fuel additional gains in the equity."

"Even Wall Street has its doubts about the firm. Zacks reports that four of the five brokerage firms following AMKR rate it a 'hold' or worse," says Schaeffer. "This bearish configuration leaves ample room for potential upgrades and/or positive initiations from other brokerage firms."

That sure is a great and insightful article, thanks eggman11.

La-onda had posted it before and I read it before recommending buying back AMKR. As the article says, James Kim would be much richer if he had more respect for AMKR's minority shareholders, and from what I've heard over the latest conference call, the old man said he learned from past mistakes and the company is now working to build shareholder's value, above all.

The company just had its best year ever in revenue terms, with $2.728 B in revenues, growing 30% from 2005 levels (my long term estimate calls for just 15% average annual growth). The chart confirms things are getting better. I'll continue holding AMKR.

AMKR keeps moving nicely to be upside, definitely leaving the $12 resistance level behind.

I believe the worries that make AMKR undervalued (in terms of revenue and EPS multiples) will unwind over the following quarters, as I see strong demand and not so bad corporate governance. I'll continue holding AMKR.

Analysts are slowly but surely raising their estimates for AMKR, and the future looks brighter than ever for this company:

Look how the 2008 EPS estimate rose from $0.96 to $1.25, recognizing the probable earnings growth trend going forward. As people build more confidence in AMKR's management ability to deliver strong results, the more the stock will close the valuation gap between AMKR and its industry peers in terms of earnings and revenue multiples:

Amkor Refinances $300 Million Term Loan
Monday April 2, 5:47 pm ET
CHANDLER, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Amkor Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMKR - News) today announced that it's wholly owned Korean subsidiary, Amkor Technology Korea, Inc., has entered into a $300 million, 7-year secured credit facility with Woori Bank, a member of Woori Financial Group (NYSE:WF - News), one of the largest financial institutions in Korea. The loan will be guaranteed on an unsecured basis by Amkor Technology, Inc. The loan bears interest at Woori's base rate plus 50 bps (currently 6.6%, or approximately LIBOR + 125 bps) and amortizes in 28 equal quarterly payments through April 2014. The Woori loan remains subject to the approval of the Bank of Korea. Proceeds of the Woori loan, together with prepayment fees and accrued and unpaid interest, will be used to repay Amkor's existing $300 million second lien term loan, due October 2010, which bears interest at a rate of LIBOR + 450 basis points (currently 9.9%). This transaction will fully discharge all of Amkor's obligations under the second lien term loan and fully discharge subsidiary guarantees and collateral securitizing the second lien term loan. "In commencing this relationship with Woori Financial Group, we are expanding our banking relationships to include a strong financial partner in Asia," said Joanne Solomon, Amkor's Senior Vice President, Finance. "We are pleased with the structure and terms of this facility, which should allow us to substantially reduce our annual interest expense."
In connection with the early repayment of the second lien term loan, Amkor expects to record a charge of approximately $16 million in the second quarter of 2007, including $9 million in prepayment fees and $7 million to write off unamortized deferred debt issuance costs. We expect to incur approximately $2 million in debt issuance costs in connection with the Woori loan, which amount will be funded from existing cash.

Good morning La-onda, it seems JP Morgan knew about today's news:

QuoteJP Morgan raised its 2007 GAAP earnings estimates on the company to $1.27 from $1.23 and for 2008 to $1.67 from $1.61 on the expectation that Amkor will reduce its debt payments through additional capital structure improvement.

And the news today:

• Amkor Refinances $300 Million Term Loan (http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/070402/20070402006383.html?.v=1)
Business Wire (Mon 5:47pm)

One of AMKR's weak spots is the balance sheet, since the current ratio is just 1.35 and there are $1.82 B in long term debt. This news helps to ease the debt burden for this company. Without the debt AMKR would be extremely profitable, for example, in 2006, instead of $0.9 EPS, it would have earned more than double that, $1.85 EPS.

But of course, debt is there and it won't go away, it must be refinanced and paid back to increase profitability. Today's news is another step in that direction.

I'll keep holding AMKR.

It looks like JP Morgan provided some help in showing investors how AMKR is undervalued here, trading at just 10.7 times JPM's EPS estimates for 2007. The stock finally responded, up 5.7% on volume of 5.4 million shares traded.

First AMKR will close its valuation gap. And then we'll see how it grows from there. But there's no doubt AMKR is a HOLD here.

AMKR broke through key resistance at $13.10 as can be seen on the 2 year weekly chart, is now making new 2 year highs!!  And it just seems like it goes from strength to strength here....

Awesome ;D

As you know I've been working on a valuation model, and I've applied that model to AMKR. Here are the results:

Basically what this thing tells me is that with the current fundamental information I estimate AMKR will rise 36.5% a year, on average, for the next three years.

If line "share price CAGR" says a number above 16%, the stock is attractive, if it is below that, the stock is unattractive. The white lines are our working variables, that is, the things that can change going forward. The yellow lines are automatically calculated or already known facts.

So, for example, if we manipulate the first line, the "initial share price", with the rest constant, we see that AMKR goes from "YES" to "NO" (as a reply to the question "Attractive?") when the stock crosses $22.40. That would be my selling point according to this model.

As it is now, AMKR is very attractive and I'll keep holding it.

(now I'm thinking, I could have a line with that "$22.40" optimal selling point, and the percent gain from where we are today to that point - still working on this ;))

David, applying an exit analysis is a fantastic idea.  It's said that a professional trader thinks as much about his exit strategy as his entry.  I love the direction 3SOF is taking.  Keep it up and don't forget us if you ever start your own fund! :)

Thanks Dory99, yes, I feel this is a great development to the strategy, instead of buying stocks looking for an above average long term return, the strategy shifted to a fundamentally based method of finding inefficiencies in the market place that ultimately lead to profits.

Lol, that hedge fund is still at least four years away, but I'll let you know.

Warren Buffet would disagree with that idea for an exit strategy, as for him, the ideal stock holding should never be sold.

He looks to buy good companies that increase in value year after year, and that value increase is what he gets as a return on investment. I'm looking to buy stocks that are inefficiently priced, given a change in fundamentals, and then sell them when that inefficiency window closes.

My strategy is only possible because of the relatively small size of the Main Portfolio (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/3stocksonfire.php), when compared to a mutual fund size.

Let's run the model for AMKR again:

Wow, with Dory99's help on another thread, I was able to make the calculus for the optimal selling price automatically, I just needed to insert the following formula:

final estimated share price/(1.16^3) = optimal selling price

Thanks a lot :)

We can see from the model that AMKR isn't a spectacular pick, but still delivering a share price CAGR of 35.4%, way above the 16% minimum threshold.

AMKR today announced that its subsidiary Amkor Technology Korea, Inc. received approval from the Bank of Korea with respect to its $300 million 7-year secured credit facility with Woori Bank. The proceeds of this loan have been drawn and were used to refinance and refund the outstanding principal on Amkor's $300 million second lien term loan due October 2010. Together with an additional $12.1 million in prepayment fees and accrued interest funded by Amkor, this transaction fully discharges all of Amkor's obligations under the second lien term loan as well as the subsidiary guarantees and collateral securing the second lien term loan.
As previously announced, in connection with the early repayment of the second lien term loan, Amkor expects to record a charge of approximately $16 million in the second quarter of 2007, including $9 million in prepayment fees and $7 million to write off unamortized deferred debt issuance costs.

Thanks for posting the news JKN, those figures were already known. AMKR had a little pullback today, fundamentally nothing changed, I'll keep holding the stock, since the optimal selling price for AMKR, given by my new valuation model, is $22.39.
Title: Re: Nevermind the gaps: AMKR
Post by: David Randolph on April 11, 2007, 05:48:46 AM
AMKR opened down because of the news JKN posted but naturally it came back up as the news was already known and the market only cares about the future, not the immediate charges and penalties for paying back that $300 M loan with another loan on more favorable terms. This will increase long term profitability and that's what investors look for when they buy a stock.

According to my estimates the optimal selling price for AMKR is $22.39, I'll keep holding the stock as it closed at $13.91.

AMKR has been making stellar progresses recently, in terms of negotiating its debt on better terms, the substantial reduction in historical dilution rates, the revenue growth and the net profit margin expansion.

This fundamental improvement has been so significant that I've decided to change the 4th variable of the valuation model, the EPS multiple estimate, from 20 to the Semiconductor - Integrated Circuits industry average of 25.45.

Results are as follows:

The estimated share price CAGR is 44.3% and the optimal selling price today is $26.84 (that would be the price where, with the current fundamental trends, AMKR would be expected to start returning less than 16% a year).

I'll keep holding AMKR.

People keep on taking profits and suspecting AMKR's ability to rise, and the stock keeps coming back by the end of the session, as the trend, that good old friend of ours, is bullish and it will remain bullish, because the stock is fundamentally attractive:

According to my estimates, the expected share price compound annual growth rate for the next 3 years will be 44.6% and given this the optimal selling price today is $26.84.

I'll keep on holding AMKR.

AMKR is warming up to push to new highs above $14.3.

My valuation model says AMKR should only be sold at $27.51, given current and expected fundamental trends:

Charges Filed Against Ex-Amkor Exec

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The executive who was responsible for prohibiting insider trading by Amkor Technology Inc. employees has been charged with repeatedly engaging in the practice himself.
The Securities and Exchange Commission on Wednesday accused Amkor's former general counsel, Kevin Heron, of trading in Amkor securities based on inside information about the company's business. Regulators said Heron made about $290,000 in profits, representing both money earned and losses avoided.

Heron was general counsel, chief insider trading compliance officer, and corporate secretary for Amkor. He was fired in September 2005 from the Chandler, Arizona-based technology company. Heron's attorney couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Thanks for posting the news superpippo, AMKR always had poor corporate governance. But things seem different now. And look at the press release just out, there's huge growth in some of the company's products:

Business Wire (Wed 4:30pm)

AMKR has 45% of a market that is expected to double in 2007 and almost double again in 2008. I don't know the size of this POP cork market, let me investigate that ... I couldn't find the size of the market.

But this might be a clue for me to revise my revenue CAGR estimate to more than the current 15% (the number on the model is 1.15 (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/fundamental.model.php?ticker=AMKR&portfolio=main)).

Anyway, even leaving it the way it is, AMKR is very attractive with an optimal selling price of $28.13, that is, 106% more than yesterday's closing price. I'll keep holding AMKR.

Here are some nice words for AMKR on Business Week (but the article isn't new, it is 4 month old):

The Amkor Story

Growth, of course, is not a given. And these companies demonstrated a combination of innovation, specialization, and good old-fashioned financial responsibility. Consider the case of Amkor Technology (AMKR), a Chandler (Ariz.)-based semiconductor manufacturing services company that wound up at the top of the list.

Amkor's job is turning silicon wafers into finished chips, then testing them to make sure they work. It's a necessary but costly bit of silicon toil that companies such as Intel and IBM, among others, have for years seen fit to outsource to companies like Amkor, Tawian's ASE Test (ASTSF) and SiliconWare Precision Industries (SPIL). And Amkor's business, says analyst Bill Ong with American Technology Research in San Francisco, is an indicator of the wider semiconductor industry, and its success in the last year owes much to plain old financial discipline.

For years, Ong says, Amkor would plan its capital expenditures around chip demand forecasts from chipmakers. But in recent years, with chip demand becoming more difficult to predict reliably, its customers have been required to pay up front. It has also declined to compete on price. "If they're competing against someone else with a lower price, they will walk away from low profit-margin business," he says. That has helped the company turn a $137 million loss for its fiscal year 2005 into a $165 million profit for the 12 months ended Sept. 30. Meanwhile, sales surged 41%, to $2.7 billion.

Amkor was one of several companies that were affected by the surge in demand for memory chips that started in late 2005 and continued through the first half of 2006 before tapering off. Demand for NAND-type flash memory—the type of flash chip used primarily to store data—surged dramatically in 2005, around the same time that Apple launched its iPod nano music player, which uses NAND flash chips instead of a hard drive to store music.»

I especially enjoyed the following two parts:

1) 41% revenue growth, and I have just 15% expected in my valuation model (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/fundamental.model.php?ticker=AMKR&portfolio=main)

2) Walking away from competition on price will make the net profit margin grow fat. It was 6.3% in 2006 and I'm expecting just 7.5% going forward, but it is possible that actual results come in better.

I'll keep holding AMKR.

I believe there's some upside potential to my AMKR estimates (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/fundamental.model.php?ticker=AMKR&portfolio=main), but even if they stay the way they are now, AMKR will deliver 46% share price CAGR and the optimal selling price today is $28.13, so I'll continue holding AMKR.

AMKR closed at a new 52 week high of $14.17, even though the candlestick on the chart looks somewhat bearish (I don't care about candlesticks, they're too short term oriented). Volume was quite high, at 6.4 million shares.

My valuation model says the stock will be worth $43.91 (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/fundamental.model.php?ticker=AMKR&portfolio=main) by the end of 2009, and with that information the optimal selling price today is $28.13 (at that price the stock would start returning less than 16% a year, according to my estimates).

I'll keep holding AMKR.

AMKR's results will also be out next Tuesday. Expectations are pretty low for this quarter, so probably the company will beat estimates. My valuation model says the stock is getting even more attractive, because the Semiconductor - Integrated Circuits industry average earnings multiple has been rising.

Zack's also like AMKR:

«Amkor Technology, Inc. (Nasdaq: AMKR), a Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) company, posted fourth-quarter results in early February. Earnings per share totaled 30 cents, outpacing the consensus by 36%. AMKR said its fourth quarter saw continued strong demand in 3D package solutions and Flip Chip packages for high performance applications, including all three major game consoles, networking and communications modules, offset by a decline in demand for packages supporting wireless and other mobile devices. The company's price-to-sales ratio stands at 0.95, and it experienced earnings per share profitability of $1.04 over the past 12 months. Results for the second quarter will available on May 1, 2007.»

Results will be out tomorrow after the close, and the company's guidance is:

A relatively slow quarter is priced in, so I guess there's room for a positive surprise. The one time charge relative to the $300 M debt refinance will only hit in Q2 2007.

I'll keep holding AMKR.

AMKR had a 4.3% sell off today, on average volume of 3.7 million shares changing hands. I guess people are afraid of the earnings report that will be out tomorrow after the close. Obviously I'm not afraid of earnings news, since I need them to profit over the long term.

Due to immaterial changes to the 2006 10-K report filed with the SEC at February 26, 2007 we got a brand new share count today of 179,424,027 shares outstanding, which is consistent with the 2% dilution factor I have on my valuation model, since the share count rose about 0.7% in Q1 2007 from Q4 2006 (well, probably a 3% dilution factor suits better after all, let me make that change).

There was also a multiple contraction at the Semiconductor - Integrated Circuits industry, as the Nasdaq went down today. Still, the valuation model results (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/fundamental.model.php?ticker=AMKR&portfolio=main) paint a very rosy picture for AMKR.

I'll hold the stock through the Q1 earnings release, I'm particularly interested in earing about guidance for the next quarter and hopefully for the full year (they usually just talk about the next quarter).

Q1 results for AMKR were out after the close:

• Amkor Reports First Quarter Sales (http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/070501/20070501006438.html?.v=1)
Business Wire (Tue 4:05pm)

Revenue and sales came in above the Street estimates, with sales of $651 M against estimates of $640.5 M. And EPS was $0.18 against the $0.15 consensus estimate.

Let me analyze the results in light of variables I need to estimate in my valuation model:

1) Dilution factor

One thing caught my attention and I sure didn't like it:

The # of shares outstanding on a fully diluted basis increased 15,776,000, or 8.27% since Q1 2006. This will make me increase my dilution factor from 1.03 to 1.083. Management continues not to work in the best interests of the company's shareholders.

2) Revenue CAGR

As you know I had 15% (or 1.15 in the valuation model) as a revenue CAGR estimate for AMKR. But sales were up just 1% in Q1 2007 from Q1 2006 levels. And, according to the company's guidance for Q2, revenue is expected to be down 1.8% from Q2 2006.

So I can't maintain a revenue CAGR estimate of 15%. Well, considering the second half probably will be stronger than the 1st half, let's put it at 5% (or 1.05).

3) Net Profit Margin estimate

Net profit margin in Q1 was 5.3%. Considering the second half of the year will show stronger sales I believe I'm able to maintain my 7.5% net profit margin estimate.

4) EPS multiple estimate

The Semiconductor - Integrated Circuits industry (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/co?s=AMKR) is trading at an average EPS multiple of 28.25. That's going to be my EPS multiple estimate for AMKR.

Let's roll the model:

Brrrr, expectations were considerably cut. I'm starting to wonder if I shouldn't look for at least 35% expected share price CAGR, since I'm looking for a 30 - 40% long term annual return on my investment. The way the optimal selling price is calculated, it considers I'm interested in 16 - 25% returns, which I'm not.

This strategic change would make AMKR not attractive, and probably I'm going to make it, because it makes sense to me.

Therefore the trading plan for AMKR is SELL, I need to look for more attractive holdings.

• Amkor Reports Strong Fourth Quarter 2007 Results (http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/080213/20080213006285.html?.v=1)
Business Wire (Wed, Feb 13)

This stock went down from $16 to $6 while fundamentals kept improving ... the market works in strange ways, sometimes discounting totally wrong scenarios. This is why one is better off trusting is own judgment than the market's judgment, thinking with his own head instead of following the crowd. Of course, one needs to be objective and not fall into hoping and wishing. He also needs to be humble and recognize when he made a mistake, a mistake that needs to be corrected.

Coming back to AMKR, $0.46 quarterly EPS was the highest in the company's history, going back to 1997.

Now analysts estimate AMKR (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ae?s=AMKR) will earn $1.22 in 2008 (up from $1.11 in 2007) and $1.39 in 2009. The growth rate expected for 2009 is about 14% and the forward EPS multiple is 8.1. This is cheap.

I guess the multiple will equal the growth rate in the current bull run, this would mean AMKR would run to a value of $19.46 a share.

I feel like buying it back (I sold it at $13.71 in the past - it's a pity I didn't buy it back in the $6-$8 range) now ... but I'm fully invested and not thinking of selling anything for now.

Good luck if you own AMKR :)

It's funny reading what I wrote just above, in the days of my ignorance (which unfortunately persist, hopefully a little less).

AMKR is "cheap", if "cheap" means valued at a discount relative to its peers. Even yesterday AMKR reported higher than expected results:

Amkor Technology 1Q profit more than doubles on sales (http://biz.yahoo.com/ap/080430/earns_amkor.html?.v=1)
AP (Wed 5:44pm)

The stock was up 10% in after hours trading.

AMKR is cheap, most people can see that through simple calculus and comparisons. But why?

It is cheap because of the following:

(sorry for the scroll)

Ok, you see there are 7 analysts providing estimates for 2008 ($1.17 EPS), 6 analysts with estimates for 2009 ($1.36 EPS), but just one single analyst providing estimates for 2010, and he's calling for a drop in EPS to $0.13.

The guy making this 2010 call is Timothy Arcuri, from Citigroup:

Actually, yesterday, due to stronger than expected results, he raised his 2010 EPS estimate from $0.13 to $0.14 (wow) and maintained his SELL rating (you have the full report attached below).

On March 18th, 2008, the referred analyst wrote a report called:

Why AMKR Can Go Back to $8; Reiterate Sell

(you also have this one below)

His calls and predictions are the main reason why AMKR is valued at a discount versus its peers. Now, two things may happen: other analysts risk more and also make calls for 2010, potentially raising the 2010 EPS estimate or else, this Citigroup analyst changes his mind. I guess one of these would be really strong catalysts for AMKR to correct its discount and potentially trade at a premium. While none of these happens, every rally will probably be met with selling pressure, as AMKR trades between, say, $8 and $12.

Provides a wide portfolio of packaging and test technologies and services; Maintains a primary role in the design and development of new package and test technologies; Cultivates long-standing relationships with customers, including many of the world's foremost semiconductor companies; Develops expertise in high-volume manufacturing processes to provide services; and Provides a broadly diversified operational scope, with production capabilities in China, Korea, Japan, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and the United States U.S. Packaging and test are integral parts of the process of manufacturing semiconductor devices. This process begins with silicon wafers and involves the fabrication of electronic circuitry into complex patterns, thus creating large numbers of individual chips on the wafers. The fabricated wafers are probed to ensure the individual devices meet design specifications. The packaging process creates an electrical interconnect between the semiconductor chip and the system board through wire bonding or bumping technologies. In packaging, individual chips are separated from the fabricated semiconductor wafers, attached to a substrate and then encased in a protective material to provide optimal electrical connectivity and thermal performance. The packaged chips are then tested using sophisticated equipment to ensure that each packaged chip meets its design specifications. The principal materials used in its packaging process are leadframes or laminate substrates, gold wire and mold compound. The semiconductor packaging process uses chemicals and gases and generates byproducts that are subject to governmental regulations. As of December 31, 2005, Amkor had 24,000 full-time employees.

Amkor Technology upgraded to buy from neutral at American Technology Research
Monday , June 16, 2008 21:50ET

SAN FRANCISCO, Jun 17, 2008 (Thomson Financial via COMTEX) -- Shares of Amkor Technology Inc. rallied Monday after American Technology Research upgraded the stock to buy from neutral, citing demand strength for high-end handsets that will likely require increased stacked die assembly and packaging through the second half of 2008.

The Chandler, Ariz.-based company provides semiconductor packaging and test services.

A recent enterprise resource planning system disruption at Amkor's Philippines facility in early May also appears to be contained and is well understood by investors, the broker said.

"Amkor has strong customer exposure in the communications segment from most of the major handset and communications related chip customers," analyst Bill Ong said in a note to clients.

He raised per-share profit estimates for 2008 and 2009 to $1.38 and $1.45, respectively. The mean estimates of analysts polled by Thomson Reuters were per-share profits of $1.33 in 2008 and $1.36 in 2009. Ong has a price target of $14 on the stock.

Amkor shares were trading up 11% at $11.75. Brigid Gaffikin bg/pc

CHANDLER, Ariz., Feb 10, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- In the news release, Amkor Reports Fourth Quarter and Full Year 2009 Results, issued February 10, 2010 by Amkor Technology, Inc., in the section titled "Business Outlook," the third bullet should read "Net income - in the range of $0.17 to $0.22 per diluted share" rather than "Net income - in the range of $0.19 to $0.28 per diluted share" as originally issued.

The corrected release reads:

AMKOR REPORTS FOURTH QUARTER AND FULL YEAR 2009 RESULTS

Amkor Technology, Inc. (AMKR, Trade ), a leading provider of semiconductor assembly and test services, today reported its financial results for the quarter and year ended December 31, 2009.

Fourth quarter net sales of $668 million were up 8% sequentially from the third quarter of 2009 and up 22% from the fourth quarter of 2008. Gross margin improved to 26% for the fourth quarter, compared to 25% for the third quarter of 2009 and 18% for the fourth quarter of 2008. Fourth quarter net income was $88 million or $0.33 per diluted share, compared to $81 million or $0.31 per diluted share in the third quarter of 2009 and a net loss of $623 million, or $3.40 loss per share, in the fourth quarter of 2008. Net income for the third quarter of 2009 included income tax benefits of $34 million or $0.12 per diluted share, primarily from the release of a tax valuation allowance at a subsidiary in Korea. The net loss for the fourth quarter of 2008 included a $671 million goodwill impairment charge, or $3.67 per share.

Full year 2009 net sales were $2.2 billion, down 18% from $2.7 billion for 2008. Gross margin was 22% for 2009, compared to 21% for 2008. Net income for the full year 2009 was $156 million or $0.67 per diluted share compared to a net loss of $457 million for 2008 or $2.50 loss per share, which included the goodwill impairment charge noted above.

"Customer demand remained strong in the fourth quarter as we delivered our best quarterly results in 2009. Our net sales of $668 million were better than expected, representing an 8% improvement from the third quarter," said Ken Joyce, Amkor's president and chief executive officer. "Our disciplined spending and cost control efforts, together with strong operating leverage in the second half of the year, have driven solid profitability and free cash flow generation during the worst industry downturn in many years," added Joyce.

"We began the year with an unprecedented drop in sales as the electronics industry significantly cut inventories in response to the global recession. The markets have rebounded more quickly than most people anticipated at the start of the year, and the current outlook is positive as we enter 2010. Looking ahead to the first quarter of 2010, we expect net sales to be down between 2% and 6% from a strong fourth quarter of 2009, with gross margin of 22% to 24%," said Joyce.

"We are currently operating at or near capacity in many of our product lines," noted Joyce. "In order to support improved customer demand, we expect to invest at higher levels in 2010 compared with 2009, with spending weighted more towards the first half of the year. Our overall capital intensity is expected to be around 14%."

"Unit shipments of 2.4 billion during the fourth quarter were up 4% from the third quarter, principally driven by the strength of leadframe wire bond packaging services," said Joanne Solomon, Amkor's chief financial officer. "Revenue growth of 8% was more than the unit growth of 4% reflecting strong demand for flip chip and wire bond chip scale and ball grid array packaging services with higher average sales prices. We saw broad demand across our product lines during the fourth quarter, including our services for the communications and consumer end markets, with notable sequential growth in networking."

"We generated $88 million in free cash flow in the full year 2009, our fourth consecutive year of positive free cash flow, despite paying $148 million to reduce our Korean severance obligations and to resolve a patent license dispute," noted Solomon. "During the fourth quarter, we repurchased $23 million of our 7.125% senior notes due 2011 and $15 million of our 7.75% senior notes due 2013 and we ended the quarter with a cash balance of $395 million and total debt of $1.4 billion."

"Capital additions for the fourth quarter of 2009 were $69 million and $198 million for the full year 2009 with full year capital intensity of 9%. We expect capital additions for the first quarter of 2010 to be approximately $100 to $125 million. Our planned capital additions are focused on expanding capacity in support of customer demand for a number of advanced packaging and test areas, including flip chip and wire bond chip scale packaging and wafer bumping," said Solomon.

Selected operating data for the fourth quarter and full year of 2009 is included in a section before the financial tables.

Business Outlook

Based upon the latest available information, we have the following expectations for the first quarter of 2010:

-- Net sales down 2% to 6% from the fourth quarter of 2009
