If I put someone on my Buddy List, what does it allow me to do? I thought it might make it so there'd be a list of my buddies somewhere, maybe on my Profile page, and the names on the list would link to their latest posts. Does this functionality exist? The only thing I've seen so far is when I want to send a personal message I can choose a buddy's name. Is that the only functionality?

Yep... is a poor funcionality ;)
I've installed this buddy list mod because of that (pvt message). You can also find your list members on a different color on the online list.
