GOOG
Is it getting close to being a short candidate? I have been wanting to short this pig for months now but thankfully havent pulled the trigger...was wondering your opinoun.
I am looking to take position in this one on Monday.
Check out the chart.
And I expect some wild movements before and after the earnings on Thursday. So need to buckle seat belts :)
Though the chart looks good and I am fundamentally positive about GOOG but I will wait for the earnings before starting any position. This may not give me the best price but it will give me better decision making position. So :) I am holding my buying triggers till Thursday.
However, if GOOG loses some weight before earning I may jump in. I'll post my entry here, right after my buy.
Also there may be opportunity in BIDU, so I have to wait and see how things develop.
GOOG broke out to a new high yesterday, and then Ebay blew out earnings and is up almost 20% premarket. If GOOG earnings are good, they will fly. If GOOG disappoints, there are lots of shorts (and put-holders) to provide bids to ensure the drop won't be too severe.
I wouldn't want to be short GOOG after Ebay's earnings and ahead of GOOG's, and there are lots of shorts in GOOG.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?s=GOOG&t=5d
Yeah yeah, we all know about it. But seriuosly, everyone should have at least ONE share of this in their portfolio. Now is a good time to buy.
Why do I say just one share? They are taking the Berkshire approach. NO SPLITS. This could be a 85,000/share stock in 10-15 years. Seriously.
I'm buying one tomorrow. Just one single little share :)
Sorry for making such an obvious, boring pick. But seriously, it was oversold for no reason. It might go down a bit more, but I wouldn't worry too much about it. Buy and forget.
Is there anyway I can get them to send me the one share? (Ie in paper form??)
Let me clarify!
My reccomendation is ONE share, don't go crazy and dump all your money in this.
I actually think that it will come DOWN QUITE A BITt (maybe to around 250?), but I don't really care. I'll probably buy around 295-300 anyways.
Also, to hear a contrarian advice
http://www.fuckedgoogle.com/
:) Gotta give both sides DD right?
When I first recommended GOOG here I had same reasoning and some more
http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?topic=1598.msg9922#msg9922
But I retracted due to the risk in Earnings and recommended to start a position after earnings. I have turned somewhat bearish on the market in general, due to overly bullish sentiment, OIL and general summer slowdown in trading. So will wait a bit, but if I ever buy I will buy full position.
Another reason for me to put GOOG on hold was 'hold' rec. by Legg Mason. And I think these guys knows more about GOOG then probably any one else on Wall St. So bascially holding GOOG and some other trades. May day trade and keep positiongs nibble.
Though GOOG could be a 1000$ stock in next 365 days. ;) Goodluck if you already own it.
I think GOOG could be setting up nicely for another leg up soon. The short-term GOOG buyers for earnings sold Friday or after hours on Thursday on the incorrect headlines saying they missed EPS by 2 cents (they actually beat by .14). GOOG shares are in much stronger hands now. Many shorts didn't cover, expecting more of a drop Most major brokers upped their EPS estimates and price targets, with Prudentia leading the way byl upping from $284 to $400. They'll probably be getting their clients in on this pullback. Institutions that haven't owned GOOG up to now will be buying the pullback. This combination, along with new Barron's shorts from this weekend's article saying they remain skeptical, creates a perfect formula for a short squeeze, especially if the 300 area holds and they get added to the S&P 500 soon, forcing S&P 500 Index funds to buy it.
There are lots of novice shorters that short GOOG only because the price is over 300. If they had 10 x the shares at a $30 price, they'd be long, even though the valuation would be exactly the same.
GOOG is cheap compared to other internet stocks, especially considering their past performance, enormous growth and premier status. GOOG is trading at a forward PE of under 40 and is the premier internet stock with amazing growth and a (brief) history of blowing away #'s every quarter. Analysts keep having to up their estimates and target prices. I wouldn't want to bet against it continuing this performance, especially with all their new products coming out.
I'll continue to hold some core GOOG shares and will be buying September in-the-money calls on further weakness and selling August out-of-the-money calls on strength against the Septembers to create a calendar spread -- kind of like writing covered calls against my calls. This strategy allows me to participate in GOOG's upside but not risk as much to the downside if it ever gets clobbered, and also requires far less capital outlay.
Fundamentally, it still has one problem: It only has one significant revenue stream. All of its peers are more diversified, but Google gets a VAST majority of it's earnings from one source - online advertising. I still like it long-term because they are an innovative company, they just need to come up with something aside from their current cash cow.
Guys,
I wanted to ask everyone here why we havent picked google ( GOOG) in 3SOF? Its rising everyday now going to 380 - 400... For last 3 months it remained between 290 - 320 as people were not able to judge the future guidance. But results blew the predictions and since then its going north.
David if you could comment, that'll be great.

GOOG is running up without me !!! :-[ :-[
GOOG has a market cap larger than Coca-Cola, larger than McDonalds (3 times larger :o). Even if GOOG could be more valuable than MSFT or Citigroup, that would mean just a 100% rise from current levels.
Unless Google will own the World I don't see all that much potential in the stock, it is too big.
Good luck !
What about short term trading ( Buy and then sell with 20% growth)....
First of all thanks for your reply. I needed it so badly.....( Everyone thinks it to be very big because of stock price) but I think they are in market which is exploding faster than any company can maintain growth in it.
- Dhiraj
its 390 and today they were saying market will be down...

Whats going on with GOOG? haulted after earnings - profits grow over 85%

1st support 350
2nd support 320
Chart below shows both horizontal and upsloping support....price by volume bars included

Yes , Calven.
I think you are correct, I predict that Google shares can fell sharply tomorrow until 360 or 345, or more........
I know everyone probably doesnt believe me but please STAY OUT of GOOG for a while. I strongly believe its headed to the 350 area...
So many bag holders at 420-430...its going to take something big to push GOOG through those HUGE RESISTANCE bars on the side of the chart below. (price by volume bars).
Furthermore I see a declining wedge pattern forming. Time will tell but I dont think the risk taken on justifies the reward at current levels.
I will be covering GOOG with the Exhausted Selling Model under the Technical Analysis section of the forum if anyone is interested.

Got to 354 yesterday, in the middle of your range. Applause.

Good call, Calven. Applause.
I just noticed the Bearish Wolfe Wave. What a nice short that would have been on the takeout of the little Doji Star low of 469 (January 11) with that Bearish Engulfing candlestick the next day. Target was about 403, which made easily on January 20.
Yesterday's Doji Star Hammer reversal looks like GOOG wants to rally back at least to the February 2 gap and to the Wave 1-4 bisect, call it 394-396.
Great work Melf - Applaud
GOOG certainly bounced off that 1-4 support line, however massive selling pressure (earnings) were too much for a second retest of the support line and it broke as shown on your chart above....
Now, here is the new pattern/chart I see with GOOG - Falling Wedge for starters, followed by 2 other support lines hitting the apex of that wedge. Basically what Im saying is that I think its a good time to start creating a long position...maybe a series of 2 buys. One around 350 and the other in future days, when we know more about GOOG on a technical basis. I am saying "start to test the water..."
* 344 is the lowest I see GOOG going short term, possibly a fill of the gap to 300 if something drastic happens.
* GOOG should soon LAUNCH (GPay) a rival to PAYPAL!
http://www.onlinepaymentwatch.com/
Here is the chart I am taking my findings off of...dont forget that with the recent downturn there will be a huge jump in short interest.... I predict about 8-10% of the float. Lots of fuel for a short term whipsaw swing.
Happy Trading.

you guys are doing a great job here. I'm starting to like TA. :)
There was a negative article on barrons over this weekend. has anyone an opinion how this article could impact GOOG next week? ???
Google insiders are selling like crazy-
They are getting their money out while the getting is good, why buy when insiders are selling?
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/it?s=GOOG
Barron's had an article this weekend which explained the insider selling.
"......most of the sales were part of pre-arranged selling programs that Google asked these executives to establish at the time of the IPO."
Barron's is available online for free this week. You can access the article at
http://online.barrons.com/article/SB113961805110771361.html?mod=9_0002_b_this_weeks_magazine_home
sold puts for a nice profit last week but with all this negatives, it could fill the gap to 300 in the next days.
cjm-
The whole paragraph-
"Granted these folks all continue to have substantial holdings in the company, and most of the sales were part of pre-arranged selling programs that Google asked these executives to establish at the time of the IPO. Still, it's notable that none have purchased shares in the wake of the recent stock pullback. Investors might be wise to follow what they do and not what they say."
So according to the article 44% of Googles revenue comes from click ads and "possibly" 25% of this is fraudulent activity.
What a mess!
Well it would be little premature to say but may be I have mistimed my buy of GOOG. Baron's Effect as some traders call it can't be overlooked. At the same time when every Joe and Jane is bearish on GOOG I think it would be interesting to see the 'support'. May be bears will have fields day on Monday but I would hold, atleast for Monday.
Goodluck all and healthy eating.
I think it will re-test $300 :)
I have a question.
GOOG's 200 dma is around 334.50. How strong could the support there be? The next support I see is around 320$.
Any opinions? :-\
TIA
As promised...GOOG hit support and bounced up as shorts covered their positions. The downsloping wedge was also broken. Should see another 8-10% before resistance at 390
Once again Cal applaud !
I thought it would go down to 320. All because of Barrons article last weekend ::)
but opened a long position after watching trading at the open yesterday.
I hope GOOG will have another good day.
GOOG is taking a big hit after CFO spoke about growth slowing down.

Google hits new high ;)
1. Introduction
Today I made two analysis that were a bit boring, AVT and ARW, so I wanted to do something with a bit more sex appeal. So I chose Google :-*
What I find interesting about Google (beside giving a nice paycheck each month to www.3stocksonfire.org ;D) is that, since it is such a high priced stock, many people rush to short it. But, of course, a high price doesn't mean anything about valuation, such as a low priced stock doesn't mean it's cheap. I bet that if GOOG did a 1/100 stock split, and the stock was trading at $4.72, many people that are shorting now would be buying it, even though the market cap would be exactly the same. It's a psychological trap.
I know that in the past I considered GOOG to be of little interest as an investment, since I was focused on small caps, and GOOG already had a $100 B plus market cap. But now mega caps are outperforming, so one needs to adapt. I thought I should give an in depth look at Google again.

3. Technical Analysis
3.1. All History Chart
(http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=27719;image)
I clearly remember when GOOG made it's IPO, which was priced at $80, every "guru" on this planet said the valuation was "insane". Yet, here we are, at $471 :o. I guess fundamentals improved a lot since the IPO. We'll check that soon on this analysis. Just note that ascending trendline on the chart, nice buying point.
3.2. Medium Term Chart
(http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=27720;image)
You can see GOOG is a "gapper". It reacts violently to news ... no, it just has a very high price, those gaps are not big percentage moves. It's a lot easier to gap when you're a $450 stock, when $10 is just 2.2%. Anyway, the medium term chart shows a lateral trend. GOOG stands at the top of the range now, but note that volume is a lot lower on this breakout attempt.
3.3. Short Term Chart
(http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=27721;image)
Will GOOG continue to move higher or will it come back down to close the gap and touch its long term ascending supports before resuming the uptrend? I don't know, I need to make some fundamentals tests to get more confident on the outlook. The chart alone isn't good enough.
4. Fundamental Analysis
4.1. Number of Shares Outstanding
(http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=27722;image)
Hey, who would say GOOG has been diluting shareholder value? What a shame ! The current market cap is $145 B.
4.2. Liquidity
(http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=27724;image)
GOOG has a strong balance sheet, as the current ratio is a very healthy 9.75.
4.3. Revenues
(http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=27725;image)
Revenues for 2006 will come in around $10.29 B. This is a 68% growth rate from 2005. The Price to Sales Ratio is 14.1, compared with 5.81 for YHOO, which is growing revenues 19% from last year levels.
4.4. Profits
(http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?action=dlattach;attach=27726;image)
According to estimates, GOOG will earn $9.52 in fiscal 2006, which ends in December 06. But I find estimates for the 4th quarter too high, at $2.88, considering GOOG made $2.36 in Q3 and $2.33 in Q2.
There's room for disappointment and a new gap, this time a down one. The Price Earnings Ratio is $472/$9.72 = 50, which seems to be very high. But the EPS growth rate is 90% YoY, so the earnings multiple may be justified or even cheap if the current growth rate continues.
5. General Overview
I actually think GOOG has a lot to grow over the years, and maybe even be the first company in the history of the world to reach the mythical mark of $1 trillion market cap. The risk to this scenario is the competition, possibly being attracted to GOOG's high margin business.
I also have some short term concerns: there has been some increase in the number of shares outstanding and Q4 earnings estimates of $2.88 per share seem hard to beat. The weak volume confirms this suspicion I have that GOOG won't hold current levels for long.
6. Trading Plan
My trading plan for GOOG is to wait for a correction to get in, maybe after the short fall of the 4Q numbers. I'll keep monitoring the stock and waiting for an entry point closer to the long term ascending trendline, which now stands at $399 (it rises $0.55 each trading day, so in 40 trading days it will be at $421).
I'm preparing to manage the 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio, and in doing so I'm analyzing 3 stocks a day. If you would like to receive my analysis and stock market thoughts on your mailbox, please register (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?action=register).
I have to applaud you Randy Boy >:D
I share your thoughts on GOOG by 100%, if there is a company out there capable of reaching the $1 trillion market cap somewhere in the future, that company is Google...
But from a trading perspective, we may find a better spot to get on this one.
Excellent analysis !
GOOG has broken out downtrend line on good volume during this week. In the daily charts Indicators are showing that stock is now in a Bull Market with MACD back again above 0 and stock is trading again above 50 dma and 200 dma.
GOOG reports after market close tomorrow 1/31/07. I'm very bullish on GOOG. I think they will stomp estimates.
QuoteAccording to estimates, GOOG will earn $9.52 in fiscal 2006, which ends in December 06. But I find estimates for the 4th quarter too high, at $2.88, considering GOOG made $2.36 in Q3 and $2.33 in Q2.
The Q2 and Q3 EPS figures David cites are the GAAP numbers, while the Q4 $2.88 estimate (has since risen a few cents) I believe is non-GAAP (before stock-based compensation). So its a bit apples to oranges. Reuters shows Q2 EPS $2.49 and Q3 $2.62 (which were the non-GAAP numbers)and Q4 estimate of 2.91, and it stands to reason that number would also be non-GAAP. So that's just an 11% increase from Q3 to Q4.
Link to Reuters data...
http://tinyurl.com/2cfu6f
The chart shows a nice bullish wedge. I'd like to see a great earnings release followed by a gap up above the $511 double-top.
Just watched GOOG strategies on Fast Money, their "safe" play is to buy on the breakout of the $513 double top, or buy on a drop to support at $450. The lotery ticket is the Feb $450 puts lol. The options action expects volatility of 8% either way. I think that as long as the market is tame tomorrow, a buy in the morning will be a good trade by EOD as more people probably expect GOOG to outperform.
I am a bit undecided myself as to whether I will play it, but dont care so much since I have been making bank with David's 3 Stocks on Fire picks anyway, I am more excited to see what tomorrow brings with that porfolio lol >:D
Google is an amazing company and I love it, but the company basically relies in one source for its revenue and profits: online advertising.
As you've probably noticed, our website has "some" google ads, and we receive money when you click them. Even though the site has been having more traffic lately (especially in February) and the number of clicks is rising, we're getting less and less money for each click.
This tells me one of two things:
1) There's less people joining the Google ad words program, or they're paying less for each click, on average. That means we get less, and obviously Google gets less money;
2) Google is squeezing content providers like us, and is getting a bigger and bigger share of the pie (they don't disclose what their share is).
I believe the first hypothesis is the correct one. As I said previously, advertising is the first thing to go down when the economy softens, especially advertising done by small companies like the ones that join Google ad words.
GOOG is trading at 13 times revenues and 45 times earnings. Investors won't forgive any earnings or revenue miss.
Technically GOOG made a perfect double top pattern, with confirmation after Tuesday's gap down. The stock is set for a good (good no, bad ???) $100 move to the downside.
Trading plan:
Sell GOOG stock short, 6.66% of capital as always.
Jesus, I had to almost double my usual exposure to one stock to sell 100 shares short of GOOG.

LOL, with GOOG that is true! I bought 100 shares back in 2005, luckily profited on them back then, but it was a big chunk of change for me lol.
Anyway, maybe there is something here for me to learn. Is a "lot" defined as a multiple of 100, and is there some advantage to trading in lots vs. say in this case just 50 shares? Or is it more psychological for you?
Shorting Google .....
Why do I fear so much on shorting? Even when I have a winning position, I still feel differently. When I am sitting on a winning long position, I feel happy and hopeful, yet when I am sitting on a winning short position, I feel happy yet nervous. Am I the type that should just stay long or in cash...
Sorry for the the irrelavance, I just want to see if anyone else has the same feeling and maybe I can figure out how to stay more comfortably in "shorts". :-[
Realcoolhead I would just look at a short position as a short to medium term long position. Once you are up on a short position you are already on the winning side of the trade so no need to worry.
I think $100 a share profit is there for shorts who entered near the $510 high. I believe $410 can happen, but below $400 GOOG would seem really really cheap. It's trading at less than 24x forward earnings with growth that's a lot higher than 24%. Revenue growth from Q405 - Q406 was 67%. Bottom line growth was much higher. I kind of think GOOG right now might be where MSFT was in the late 80's or early 90's. Great companies usually get to enjoy more than 2 years of stock price success. In the short-term though, GOOG will go where the overall market goes. Markets continue down, so will GOOG.
QuoteAnyway, maybe there is something here for me to learn. Is a "lot" defined as a multiple of 100, and is there some advantage to trading in lots vs. say in this case just 50 shares? Or is it more psychological for you?
Yes, a lot is a multiple of 100. There's advantage in trading in lots, some brokers charge a higher commission if you don't buy lots (multiples of 100 shares) and in some stocks you get a worst price than the current market price, like you're trading in another market (market makers are even more entitled to rip you off when you trade in odd quantities).
But in GOOG that problem doesn't exist, as many people trade in fractions of a lot and it is a very high priced and liquid stock.

It is unnatural to be short, since an investor is someone that buys stocks. In being short we're not investors, we're traders. In my view, we're traders that still want to have a profitable year, even though a bear market is probably unfolding.
But being a trader doesn't mean one has to be a short term trader. You can't look to intraday quotes, especially on a stock like GOOG, that changes a lot during the day (in $ terms, not in % terms).
You're already winning, so calm down. If you want to, decide you won't lose money on this trade and put a buy to cover stop at your entry price (but that's not my recommendation).
Anyway, I see GOOG going down $50 next week (starting Monday), so I guess there won't be a problem with your stop ;)

Hi Lucas Scott, so nice to read things from you, thanks :)
GOOG's analyst estimates on Yahoo (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/ae?s=goog) point to EPS of $14.25 in 2007. So the forward earnings multiple is 30.8, not 24 as you wrote (unless you're considering 2008 numbers).
The problem is the company will probably miss those estimates, I believe, by a lot, because as the economy slows down, GOOG's business will slow down a lot more, as it relies almost solely on advertising revenues.
QuoteI kind of think GOOG right now might be where MSFT was in the late 80's or early 90's. Great companies usually get to enjoy more than 2 years of stock price success.
There's just a problem with your thinking Lucas Scott. The market cap comparison. In 1990 MSFT was about a $4 B market cap. GOOG's market cap is already $136 B, that is, 34 times larger than what MSFT's was.
If GOOG were to rise the same amount as MSFT did since 1990, it would be a $4.6 trillion market cap in 2024 or so. $4.6 T is about 40% of the size of the entire US economy, so you can pretty much guess that is absolutely impossible.
QuoteIn the short-term though, GOOG will go where the overall market goes. Markets continue down, so will GOOG.
Yep, I agree.
On the title of this analysis I talk about $100 profit, but that doesn't mean I'll get out there, because, if GOOG goes down 50% in this bear market, which for me would be a natural thing to happen, it will go down not $100, but $223.
I want to see how the economic slowdown plays on GOOG's revenues and profits. Here at www.3stocksonfire.org we're already feeling the effect of a sharp slowdown in Google ads revenue, which were cut by more than 50% from a few months ago, even as the website got more traffic and clicks on the ads ???
I'll continue holding GOOG short, as the stock technically broke down below a very important long term ascending trendline.
Thanks nullzero and David. I think I just have to work on adjusting my mental problem with short positions --- thinking they are just trading positions not investments.
David, it looks Google is not very transparent about sharing revenues? Do they not tell you the "formula" of how you get paid? Sounds like dishonest business from Google side...

There's no transparency at all, nobody knows the formula how revenue gets split. Most people think it is about 50/50, others think it is 60% for Google and 40% for content providers. They can change the formula whenever they want.
Our Google ad sense revenues declined to 1/3 of what they were and that can be because companies on the ad words program are paying less and less per click, or because Google dramatically increased its share of the pie. I think it is the first hypothesis (or both combined), but either way, not good for the company over the long term (for example, we're already considering taking the ads off, they're not worth it).
The fact is Google had 2006 revenues of $10.6 B and net income of $3.08 B, almost all of it coming from advertising from small and mid size companies. Advertising is the first thing companies cut in times of economic uncertainty. If the company fails to meet 2007 projections, inflated expectations will need to come down to earth. This scenario means the share price will be cut in half to me.
Have a nice Sunday :)
Instead of collapsing to the downside on Monday, GOOG actually recovered a bit of ground.
As I see it, this move was a normal pullback to the broken support line, after that gap down at the open. What was support is now an important resistance level.
As of today, that trendline stands at $444, and I wouldn't like to see GOOG closing above that level, just from a short term technical point of view.
Over the medium term, fundamental analysis tells me the stock is quite expensive in the face of what I expect to be an economic recession in late 2007, early 2008.
I'll continue holding GOOG short.

Good point David. Yeah a stock price expansion like that would be impossible. I still see GOOG as being like MSFT circa 1990 in terms of where the company is in its development. MSFT in 1990 was known for one thing -- the desktop operating system (DOS then Win3.0). It wasn't until later in the decade that they penetrated the server software market, Microsoft Office became a standard, Internet Explorer was developed, and MSN was built. GOOG right now is all about search. But with the amount of cash they have on hand and the cash flow they generate, in 5 years they might be just as well-known for things other than search, and be raking in crazy amounts of cash from it.
I agree Lucas Scott, Google still has a lot to give to the World, it is in its early stages of development.
But, at this moment it is a $142 B company relying almost exclusively on online advertising for its revenues and profits. My take is those revenues are going down this quarter, and will go down even more for the next couple of quarters.
If we consider the chart, the stock made a perfect double top pattern, with a downside target of $391. Yesterday the stock had a strong rally, but that seems like a throwback to the broken neckline.
My plan is to hold GOOG short for as long as it closes below the descending trendline on the chart, currently at $470.
Looks like GOOG is up pre-market from an analyst upgrade.
---------------
NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Google Inc. (GOOG) shares rose 1% to $461.90 before the
opening bell Wednesday after UBS upgraded the Internet search giant to buy from
neutral, saying the stock has reached a price that makes valuation
"compelling."
Analyst Benjamin Schachter also said in a research note that while returns in
longer-term initiatives - such as payments, mobile, video, display and other
forms of advertising - could take more time to develop, "the fundamentals in
the company's keyword search business justify a buy recommendation at current
levels."
Schachter kept his 12-month stock price target at $560.
Shares of rival Yahoo Inc. (YHOO) were also up, rising 20 cents to $31,
following a report saying the recent upgrade of its search-marketing system,
known as "Panama," appears to have stabilized the company's previously
declining share of spending on search advertising and improved the performance
of ads for large advertisers.
According to a report scheduled for release Wednesday by search-marketing
technology company SearchIgnite and RBC Capital Markets, Yahoo's share of
spending hit a low of 17% in January during its transition to the new system
but then held steady and rose to 18.1% recently.
During 2006, Yahoo's share of search dollars declined steadily from 46% at
the start of the year, as spending shifted dramatically to rival Google, the
report shows.
Thanks for reporting the "news" Tokyopua, as usually people that bought based on that recommendation are losing, at least for the short term.
GOOG ended up closing below the neckline I have on my chart. That is bearish, but since it will probably open higher today, perhaps it will have the power to meet the descending trendline at $468.78. I'm not willing to let go of this GOOG short all that easily, as I believe the economic slowdown will have a greater impact on GOOG's revenues than anyone can imagine at this stage. As I've repeatedly said we're already feeling such effect here at 3 Stocks.
I would like to own GOOG short until it releases 1Q results (probably before April 15), and maybe I will. For now the plan is to hold GOOG short whatever happens.
GOOG closed a gap it had opened yesterday and again, it closed below the neckline of the double top pattern. I see its fundamental trends deteriorating throughout 2007, not just because of Yahoo's Panama competition, but because a slowing US economy will feel its effects first on advertising.
I'm losing 1.96% on this GOOG short sale, but I plan to hold it for at least a couple of months, since I speculate 1Q results will be well below estimates.
My GOOG short sale is more fundamentally based than other short picks currently in the Main Portfolio (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/3stocksonfire.php). From GOOG's latest 10-K form:
«Advertising revenues made up 99% of our revenues in 2004, 2005 and 2006.»
Advertising is usually the first sector to feel the effects of a slowing economy. 3Stocks is already feeling this slowdown, as its advertising revenues from being a Google content provider fell to 1/3 of what they used to be.
Competition is also appearing from Yahoo and its Panama technology, as Yahoo looks to have an increasing role in this high profit margin area.
I'll continue holding GOOG short, probably until mid April or so.
I forgot the hour changed again so I'm in a hurry to make these updates. Nothing changed at GOOG, not technically or fundamentally, I'll keep holding the stock short.
Interesting.........
Viacom Sues Google,YouTube For Alleged Copyright InfringementLast update: 3/13/2007 9:21:18 AMDOW JONES NEWSWIRES Viacom Inc. (VIA) sued Google Inc. (GOOG) and its YouTube unit for alleged intentional copyright infringement of almost 160,000 entertainment clips. Viacom, New York, said Tuesday it seeks more than $1 billion in damages and an injunction prohibiting further infringement. Google and YouTube officials weren't immediately available to comment on the complaint, which is before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Viacom said it filed the complaint after unproductive negotiations
Thanks for the info Aussie :)
GOOG is a different short than the others on the Main Portfolio (http://www.3stocksonfire.org/3stocksonfire.php), I believe I have more motives to be bearish this stock than others, due to my "inside information" lol
My take is Google Ad Words is experiencing a slowdown and Q1 numbers will be bellow expectations. I'll continue holding the stock short until the bad news is out, which should be about mid April when GOOG reports results.
I'll continue holding GOOG short.
I'm not willing to let go of GOOG short all that easily, due to fundamental reasons. GOOG is a $140 B market cap company with 99% of its revenues coming from advertising, which I believe will go down over the next 12 months or so.
Also, competition from Yahoo will start biting on those fat margins.
I'll continue holding GOOG short.
Forgetting the fundamentals for today's update, GOOG has a perfect and confirmed double top on the chart. It even made a throwback to the pattern's neckline, which only reinforces the bearishness of the pattern.
The technical target of this breakdown is $397, which seems like a nice place to cover my shorts when the stock gets there after posting disappointing results for Q1 2007.
This is my expectation and I'll keep holding for that outcome. GOOG's results will probably be out before April 15.

Anything under 100 shares is an "odd lot." Back when I was a youngster and playing the market (I got started when I was 11 -- my grandfather, who lived in Canada, taught me the market and I cut my teeth on Toronto Exchange uranium penny stocks) there were "odd lot" traders who would execute these smaller buys and sells for a $2.00 fee.

I agree with MorningStar, GOOG is overvalued, but I have somewhat different motives to think that way. They're afraid Google won't be able to transfer its dominance in search to other areas and competition. I'm more worried (or in this case hopeful) about a general advertising market slowdown, as it usually happens when the economy softens.

It's really cool to read about your experiences on trading stocks 50 years ago rudynostalgia :)
Tell me one thing, when you have some time. Of all the small caps you've bought over the years, how many are still in business and are publicly traded companies today and how many just disappeared? If you please give me just a rough estimate on a % basis.
I'm curious about this, because it is hard to know about those losers, since they just fade away and disappear from more common statistics. Someday I'll make a study on this subject.
As for GOOG, the chart says "going down" after a perfect and confirmed double top. My read of the fundamental situation tells me GOOG will disappoint when it posts 1Q 2007 results, which will probably be out in less than a month.
I'll continue holding GOOG short.
It's a sure thing that this isn't going to be my best trade ever, but I still think I'll buy to cover GOOG around $400 in less than a month, when the company reports Q1 2007 results.
I'll continue holding GOOG short.
The market went up, yet GOOG went down a bit. I'm going to hold this short position until Q1 2007 results are released since my short sale is based on my expectation of a weaker than expected quarter for GOOG, as one can read on this thread.
I'll keep holding GOOG short.
Sorry for the oversized chart but its my 1.5 year setting. I was looking at last year at this time vs where it was when Q1 was released, and as a GOOG-long I really hope it goes the same way this time (sorry David, I hope you are right about every other play just not this one ;). Last year it sank after Q4 earnings released and on Mar-21 it was around its short-term lows, but by Q1 earnings four weeks later it had rallied 32%. Earnings were not as grand as expected and it sold off. But I'd be happy with a 30% rally and then sell before earnings. C'mon Googie!
Also per the chart it seems that when the stock price is down near the 200 ema it's been a good time to buy.
GOOG rallied yesterday with the general market and I'm losing 2.36% in this short sale. Since it will probably be my last short sale and I have this expectation of lower than expected Q1 results, I'll keep holding GOOG short, as a micro, not macro play.
The chart below isn't a nice one to be short of. Even though I expect GOOG to disappoint when it reports its 1Q results, that may happen only in the second week of May, and who knows what will happen in between.
My hand is weak on this short sale (as in any other, I don't plan to sell any stock short ever again), I'll take my 3.5% loss and move on without glory.
I am glad you made this decision. I feel even if you are right about GOOG's disappointing quarter, there will be specularive running up towards the quarterly report which won't happen for at least 3 weeks.
FYI, Bob Brinker's Marketimer, the only newsletter I am paying for, sent out this special message on March 19th:
"We are very pleased with the stock market correction process that has unfolded in recent weeks. As a result, we now rate the stock market as attractive for purchase on any weakness that may occur in the vicinity of the S&P 500 Index 1380 level or lower. "
Bob made several critical calls which turned out to be correct: like in Jannury of 2000, he called to move 60% out of equity market; and in March of 2003, he returned to be fully invested in stocks. Last summer, he also correctly called a buying opportunity for S&P 500 below 1250.
The thing I like about his newsletter is his focus on long-term trend and very fundamental oriented approach.

Time to do a little bottom fishing in Google? ???
Target $600-900, stop $430.
I am finding that as soon as the analysts down grade something and it has already dropped, its time to buy. ;D
They will also upgrade something and it has already run up, its time to short it. ;) ;D

Deals of the day -- mergers and acquisitions
Google Inc (GOOG) said it has completed the $3.1 billion acquisition of DoubleClick Inc, just hours after receiving antitrust clearance from the European Commission.

Google gets DoubleClick, shareholders applaud
Tuesday March 11, 8:16 pm ET
By David Lawsky and Eric Auchard
BRUSSELS/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Google Inc (NasdaqGS:GOOG - News) won approval on Tuesday from the European Commission of its planned acquisition of DoubleClick Inc and promptly closed the deal, sending its stock 6 percent higher.
The move will allow the Web search and advertising leader to accelerate its move into the market for corporate banner and display ads, where it has little business, and fulfill an expansion plan that has been on hold for a year.
Separately, a New York federal judge capped possible damages media conglomerate Viacom Inc (NYSE:VIA-B - News) can seek in its $1 billion lawsuit alleging Google was negligent allowing pirated programs on its YouTube online video sharing service.
The raft of favorable news, coming on a buoyant day for U.S. stock markets when the Dow Jones index closed up 3.6 percent, countered a string of bad news that has had Wall Street debating whether Google's rapid growth is slowing.
Google shares enjoyed a minor rally, gaining 6.3 percent to $440, as the stock began to reverse a sharp decline since the start of 2008, when it stood near $700.
Shares hit 17-month lows on Monday and remain off 36 percent so far this year after jumping 50 percent in 2007.
The Web search leader has been hampered in moves to expand into the market for corporate brand ads through its 2007 merger with DoubleClick and into the emerging video advertising market through its acquisition of YouTube in 2006.
"Google has kind of languished strategically over the past year," Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Jeffrey Lindsay said. "The strategy for 2007 was really put on ice for quite some time."
"It looks like Google is starting to make headway," the Wall Street analyst said. "They are coming back on something of a roll -- the wait-and-see period is coming to an end."
The EU approval of the $3.1 billion DoubleClick deal came despite objections from rivals and privacy advocates and followed an in-depth investigation by European competition officials. The merger, announced a year ago, was given a go-ahead by U.S. antitrust authorities late last year.
Software giant Microsoft (NasdaqGS:MSFT - News), Internet rival Yahoo (NasdaqGS:YHOO - News) and AT&T Inc (NYSE:T - News), the largest U.S. telephone company, had pressed regulators to block the Google-DoubleClick deal, arguing it gave Google too much power in online ad markets.
Within hours of the European Commission's approval of the DoubleClick deal, Google announced it had sealed the deal.
Google says it has been limited by law from making detailed integration plans with DoubleClick, but by early April it expects to have a plan to cut an unspecified number of jobs in DoubleClick's U.S. operations and, potentially, overseas.
"As with most mergers, there may be reductions in headcount. We expect these to take place in the U.S. and possibly in other regions as well," Google said in a statement.
DoubleClick has 1,500 employees. Google had 16,805 employees at the end of 2007.
LOOKING AHEAD AGAIN
On the legal front, U.S. District Judge Louis Stanton denied a Viacom request to add punitive damages to its suit against Google, saying common law damages cannot be recovered under the Copyright Act.
A Viacom representative said the company had no comment.
The European Commission, the European Union's executive arm, said Google and DoubleClick operate in different parts of the online advertising world and their deal was not a marriage of rivals.
Google attracts nearly two-thirds of Web searches in the United States and dominates the European Web search market with a share upward of 80 percent, according to industry data.
That gives it an edge on the simple ads it sells, which appear on its search pages. DoubleClick deals with fancy display ads that it delivers to many kinds of Web sites.
But last month, a report by Web traffic researcher comScore Inc raised fears among investors that Google may be having trouble converting its search-market leadership into paid advertising, from which it derives 99 percent of its revenue.
Many analysts countered by saying Google management's own moves to improve the effectiveness of ads by paring back the number it delivers on each Web page explain the decline.
Bernstein's Lindsay says investors are now focused on whether comScore's February data for Web search advertising, due out later this month, will show a continued slump or a rebound in the number of advertisements Web visitors viewed.
The Wall Street analyst believes the data will show improvements in Google ad viewership.
"That would confirm that Google has not been damaged by the economic downturn," said Lindsay, who recommends investors buy Google shares because they will outperform the market. He said positive news at this juncture would lead him to change his rating to "strong buy" on the stock.
GOOG up $76 or 17% in aftermarket on ER.

FTC's antitrust inquiry turns up heat on Google
Google reaches critical juncture as Federal Trade Commission probes into heart of its business
Friday June 24
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Google may be entering a make-or-break phase in its colorful history now that U.S. regulators have opened an investigation into whether the company has been abusing its dominance of Internet search and advertising to stifle competition.
The probe by the Federal Trade Commission, confirmed by the company Friday, will require Google to convince regulators that its closely guarded recipe for search results is designed to give people the best recommendations, not bury links to its rivals.
If you search for a local business, for example, Google might highlight its own listing, from a service called Google Places, instead of one on Yelp, a popular review site and Google competitor.
Requests for directions may turn up Google Maps, and queries for a video might point to the company's own site, YouTube. Or if you type "mortgage" in Google's main search box, the top ad might be for Google Advisor, which lists the lowest interest rates.
The inquiry also is expected to peer into Google's financial engine: the advertising links tied to the subject of each search request. Some of these commercial messages appear, shaded in color, at the top of the results page, while others are stacked in the right-hand column.
Even as Google has expanded into video, mobile phones and television, the text advertising that pops up alongside search results and other Web content generates most of Google's revenue -- an amount expected to exceed $35 billion this year.
Some websites contend Google has rigged its system in a way that drives up the ad prices, even though Google says the rate is determined by bids submitted in an auction. Others say Google purposely blocks their ads from appearing because the company views them as competitive threats. A coalition of Internet travel companies, including Expedia, Hotwire and Kayak, have welcomed the investigation.
The FTC is following the lead of European regulators who launched a similar investigation last November. The Texas attorney general has been looking into Google's business practices, too.
The search engines for Microsoft and Yahoo also sometimes feature their own services in search results. The big difference: Google processes about two-thirds of all search requests in the U.S. and handles an even larger volume of advertising. Microsoft's Bing and Yahoo combined have less than 30 percent of the market.
Danny Sullivan, who follows the industry closely as editor-in-chief of the trade journal Search Engine Land, said what Google is doing is not unlike a newspaper running an ad to promote one of its products.
"From what I have seen so far," he says, "Google doesn't seem to be doing anything wrong."
Melissa Maxman, an antitrust attorney in Washington, said the FTC wouldn't have opened its inquiry unless it thought the complaints were credible.
"There is smoke if not fire," she said.
The FTC's investigation threatens to put Google on the same course as nemesis Microsoft, which was the target of a Justice Department lawsuit that began in the 1990s and dragged into the next decade. That case alleged that Microsoft used its dominant Windows operating system to kill competing software makers.
"It's right out of the same playbook," Maxman said of the FTC's probe into Google.
Although Microsoft thwarted an attempt to break up the company, it was distracted for years, and the company has never been quite the same. The investigation may have made Microsoft more vulnerable to companies such as Google during the late 1990s as the Internet emerged as an important new platform on computers.
Now, Google faces some of the same threats as it tries to figure out how to counter the rising popularity of services such as Facebook.
In an extreme scenario, the FTC's inquiry could be the first step in a long process that ends with Google having to spin off YouTube and some of the other pieces of the empire it has built for 13 years. Although it doesn't have to, the FTC could hand its case off to the Justice Department, as it did in the Microsoft inquiry.
"Inevitably, if we get to the point where Google is found to have abused its power, we are going to be talking about divestiture because divestitures are always a better way to go than trying to regulate something like this," said Gary Reback, an antitrust lawyer in Silicon Valley who is representing some of the companies complaining about Google's practices.
Other antitrust attorneys think the investigation could result in less radical solutions, such as prohibiting Google from featuring its own services at the top of its search results. Google could also agree to periodic audits of how it programs its search engine, much as did earlier this year in a settlement of an FTC investigation into its privacy practices.
Google is expected to put up a fierce fight. The investigation is aimed at the heart of its business, its formula for ranking the quality of websites and ads, which has evolved since Google co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin began working on it at Stanford University. The company views the recommendations that it produces as a matter of opinion protected by the First Amendment.
"It's still unclear exactly what the FTC's concerns are, but we're clear about where we stand," one of Google's top search engineers, Amit Singhal, wrote Friday on the company's blog. "Since the beginning, we have been guided by the idea that, if we focus on the user, all else will follow."
Google has been preparing for this battle since it was almost sued by the Justice Department over a proposed Internet search partnership two and a half years ago. The Justice Department drew up a complaint alleging Google had built a monopoly in Internet search, but never filed it because Google scuttled its agreement with Yahoo to avoid going to court.
Google has been under increasing government scrutiny since then. It has prevailed in the key confrontations and won regulatory approval for several key acquisitions, including its $3.2 billion purchase of online ad service DoubleClick in 2008, last year's $681 million purchase of mobile ad service AdMob and a $700 million purchase of airline fare tracker ITA Software in April.
To prove Google abused its dominance, regulators will have to get it to turn over sensitive documents that it has resisted sharing in the past. And Google probably won't be shy about fighting for the right to adjust its search formula to deliver more useful results to its audience.
The company says it needs to fine-tune search results to weed out the sites that try to game its system and win a high ranking even though they have little to do with whatever a person was searching for.
