Perhaps that's true. But volume doesn't show many people are taking on that rumor. I wish you a good trade and hope I'll buy this stock at an higher price, when we have strong momentum and volume backing the move.

(altough I believe this stock has a lot of bagholders in it, hard to take off - only with very strong fundamental reason I believe)
Title: ATML
Post by: David Randolph on October 04, 2005, 08:08:13 AM
I believe we're at the final stages of the bull market that started on March 2003 and took the S&P 500 from a low of 780 to 1247 points. I don't know if it will take days or weeks or even months but there are several signs that a long term bear market could unfold again.

I've seen (or at least studied) many bull and bear markets since stock market history began and they all have pretty much the same behaviour when they come to an end. At the final stages of a bull market investors pick up the forgotten stocks, those that were left in the ground as others rose immensely.

Those stocks deserve their place in the sun too, but there's not much time now. So they will rise fast before everything falls appart and the general market starts trending down.

I'm not particularly interested on the specifics of each stock, since they are acting as a group and will continue to do so, based almost exclusively on mass behaviour.

You see, now everything's gone up, the energy bubble is now completely unfolding and getting to an end too, so big and small speculators as a mob will jump on these liquid and low priced stocks. I see 20 to 100% upside potential in each one of them in a few weeks time.

ATML fully qualifies, it is one of those abandoned angels. I will buy ATML for the 3 Stocks on Fire Portfolio at today's open.

For semi stocks, I am not sure if ATML is a good pick or not. But the downside risk is small ($2.00 is always its strong support).

I prefer to wait until semi stocks announced their 3rd qt earnings. That is in the middle or second half of October.

Other bottom-fishing garbage semi stocks are:

AMCC ($2.50)
BRCDE ($4.00) - at this price for 5 months.
VTSS ($1.68) new year low
TXCC ($1.50)
LTXX ($3.50)
KLIC  ($7.00)
...

I like AMD, SSTI, FLSH, SNDK, TRID, CAMD.

AMD may see at least $30 by year-end and double it in one year. Its technology is 2 years ahead of INTC and is taking INTC's market share every qt recently.

CAMD has its own unique semi products and no competitors in this fiend - put a lot of passive components into one chip (capacitors, inductors, resistors etc).

SSTI - NOR memory chip price firmed and inventory problem solved; FLASH CONTROLLER used in APPL iPod nano. $7-$8 by year end and $10 in one year.

Another semi stock you may want to consider:

ACLS - high $9.25 and right now is just above year low.

It is profitable and may see $9 again by end of year.

Thanks for your input Shaw Fund, I appreciate it  :)

But I have to be honest with you. You're telling me something new saying ATML is a semiconductor stock. I didn't know that (well, I actually knew, but that wasn't a factor, at all, on my decision to buy). So, I'm not looking for semiconductor stocks, I'm looking for stocks that were market darlings of the bubble era and now were almost forgoten for the entire bull market that started in March 2003 (a medium term bull market inside a longer term bear market if you ask me).

ATML had an impressive session today, considering the general market weakness (which was expected, I'm quite bearish on the general market). The stock closed above the $2.19 resistance level. I will continue holding it for the short term, I believe in the next couple of weeks all my 4 low price/big volume stocks will advance in the face of a falling market.

It always happens this way when a bull market is near it's end, my reasoning for these trades is stock market history and mass behaviour.
Title: Re: Time to pick up the liquid garbage: ATML

A second close above $2.19 confirms the technical breakout. The technical target of the breakout is $2.43, so I think at least that is warranted for ATML.

I will continue holding the stock whatever happens today, I usually need some trading days to define a trading plan.
Title: Re: Time to pick up the liquid garbage: ATML
Post by: David Randolph on October 06, 2005, 07:53:13 PM
I really like the market action on ATML. I'll continue holding it, the technical target of the $2.19 resistance level is $2.43.
Title: Re: Time to pick up the liquid garbage: ATML
Post by: David Randolph on October 10, 2005, 06:41:26 AM
Friday was the fourth close above $2.19 for ATML, so the resistance is definitely broken. The technical target of that breakout is $2.43, and one has to believe on the target for as long as the  technical signal is still valid. It would turn not valid if ATML were to close below $2.19 again.

So here's my trading plan:

1) Sell with a profit at the $2.43 technical target.
2) Sell with a small loss if the stock is set to close below $2.19.

I know the profit potential isn't much, but hey, we've just entered a bear market.

Yes, I always do what is previously planned. Sold ATML at $2.17 before the close, for a negligible 1.4% loss.

The planned stated:

QuoteSo here's my trading plan:

1) Sell with a profit at the $2.43 technical target.
2) Sell with a small loss if the stock is set to close below $2.19.

The bear market is haunting nearly every group. ATML couldn't hold the selling pressure on the general market and the semiconductor group.

I was wrong on my analysis, took my small loss (the normal speculation risk). Now it is time to move on.

ATML rise just turned more serious after the stock was able to close above a long term resistance level on Friday.

The previous rise can't be defined as a «rebound» anymore, technically it is all blue skies for ATML from this point.

I'll buy ATML for the 3 SOF Fast Portfolio at today's open, $5,000.
Title: Re: ATML is short and long term bullish
Post by: David Randolph on January 10, 2006, 07:32:57 PM
Target is $3.59 - $3.01 = $0.58 + $3.59 = $4.17, or a 15.19% profit potential from my buying price at $3.62.

I set the risk at 5%. If the stock prints $3.44 I'll take my loss and move on.

This is how I want the 3 SOF Fast Portfolio to be from now on. Plain, technical, and above all, simple.

2) Sell with a loss if the stock trades at $3.44.

David,

Quick question. When you say trade, do you still mean at closing. So do you mean still is set to close at. Or do you set a stop loss at that price?

Thanks in advance

I set a stop loss at that price because I'm not willing to lose more than 5%. This is a different type of money management rule, I set a percentage stop level of 5%, regardless of the chart or other matters. This is because I need simplicity on the Fast Portfolio.

I set a larger target than a stop loss level and look for stocks with attractive technical patters, so my win/loss ratio improves. If the win loss ratio is 1 (wins = losses), I'll make good money every month on the Fast Portfolio.

The plan for ATML still is:

1) Sell with a profit at $4.17
2) Sell with a loss if the stock trades at $3.44.

!!!#%&**!!

I had to take a quick biz trip this week.  I felt the need to set a stop at 3.44 (5% off my buy at 3.62).  It opened yesterday at 3.36 and my position was taken out.  Low was 3.32 yesterday and they take it back up to close at 3.49.  Even a 7% stop loss from 3.62 would have been taken out.  This is the reason I hate to use stops.  This has happened way too often to just be fortuitous.  The vultures never miss an opportunity.  When I don't use stops I have to be a hawk and watch the price all day, when I do use them they seem get taken out, unless the pps has moved well above my buy in.

Frustrating...

I totally agree JKN, I was stopped out at $3.36 too  :P This is one of the reasons the 3 SOF Fast Portfolio will end, very short term trading is too hard and time demanding for my needs. It doesn't suit my investment style or the majority of our subscribers, I believe.

Trading with a larger time frame allows for some more freedom of movement of the stock around the initial buy price, so one does not get shaken out of the position by short term and intraday volatility.

Good luck the next time  :)

That is why I hate them too. Luckely my bank does not allow them for the US stockmarket  :) and David's way of trading (watch the opening and the close) have made my life so much more relaxing. I like it and follow it  ;) (Thanks David, my family likes me better too  ;))

Anyway I'm not out of ATML. Believe the whole Japan thing was also of effect on the US like it was on so many other markets the last two days.

I'll continue holding ATML and make a plan hopefully by tomorrow.

One of the reasons I like your strategies is that I don't feel the strong need to be a pps hawk.  I belonged to a service before 3SOF that was very time-consuming.  The service provided constant commentary during the day and involved significant intraday trading.  I made some really good $ but I just can't afford the time, unfortunately, I still have to actually work so I can have some $ to invest.

Keep up the good work.  I appreciate your efforts and sharing of your hard-earned knowledge and experience.

PS.  I'm still smarting over GIGM.  I had a GTC buy order at 2.51 on 12/15/05 that never got filled.  It opened at $2.60 on 12/16, closed at $2.93.  The rest is history....another AAAARGH !

I see it's up a little premarket. It really does not matter, I'm happy with what I've got. I did not want to see it go all the way back to my TL and I did not have the time to make a new plan.

Will definetly hope for those still holding it will still go way higher. Tomorrow is the exiting day.

UPDATE 1-Atmel returns to profitability
Tue Jan 31, 2006 5:21 PM ET
(Recasts, adds details, background)

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 31 (Reuters) - Atmel Corp. (ATML.O: Quote, Profile, Research) on Tuesday posted a quarterly profit as the maker of microchips for cars, airplanes and communication devices streamlined its business and won a large arbitration award.

UPDATE 1-Atmel returns to profitability
Atmel returns to quarterly profit
Atmel said fourth-quarter net profit was $53.8 million, or 11 cents per share, compared with a loss of $7.1 million, or 1 cent per share a year earlier.

Excluding special items, the company had been expected to lose $2.17 million, or 1 cent per share, according to the average forecast of four analysts to Reuters Estimates.

Atmel's profit included a $43.1 million arbitration award from a dispute with Swedish mobile telephone maker Ericsson (ERICb.ST: Quote, Profile, Research), a $5.8 million gain on an investment sale, and $7.5 million from an income tax benefit.

That offset restructuring costs of $28.2 million.

The company did not provide a dollar or per-share profit number excluding all the one-time gains and charges.

Revenue rose 4 percent from a year earlier to $425.2 million, just shy of the average estimate of $428.2 million.

The company also said revenue for its current quarter would be flat to down 2 percent from the fourth quarter, reflecting a seasonal pattern. Gross margins would be between 29 percent and 31 percent.

Atmel's restructuring saw the San Jose, California-based company shed more than 700 jobs, or 8 percent of its workforce, last year as it focused on its microcontroller business and sold a factory in France.

Atmel shares rose 1 percent in extended trading. The stock fell nearly 3 percent to close at $3.95 on Nasdaq.

Hey guys,

Might be a good time to have another look at ATML - very nice bullish chart pattern - after significant gains ATML showed a pull-back throughout december and then resumed its bullish uptrend, peaking just over $5.  Since the middle of Feb, it has been in pullback mode, but may have bottomed at $4.25 (tested this low the last 3 days), and made a small but crucial white candle friday.  Could this be the beginning of the new uptrend?  I see ascending support coming in just below $4.20, and there should be solid long term support at $4 (see 3 yr chart).  50MA also looks to be supporting the uptrend.  If the last 2 up-legs are anything to go by, a possible target for the next up-trending leg could be around $6, but I would watch for resistance at around $4.75 and of course, recent highs just over $5.

P.S.  I'm in at 4.36 on Fri

Another white candle for ATML - not much but does look to be turning around, and hopefully we have found a bottom here.  MACD is starting to flatten and the MACD histo is moving towards the centre line, RSI has ticked up and is approaching 50, and the -DI on the ADX has taken a turn south, indiacing that selling pressure has weakened.  Now all we need is for the4 buying pressure to cick in.

Now all I would like to see is a bit more volume and higher highs.  There is a small open gap at 4.50 which ATML topped out at today, but hopefully this can get taken out shortly.  Next resistance above that is at 4.75, hopefully we will see that level this week.

ATML printed a hanging man today with a tiny white body, so not a doji because open and close were not the same, i don't like it! :-\

I don't know if it's important that our hanging man was white, the one on the picture below is black... Maybe someone can help me out?

The Hanging Man is a bearish reversal pattern that can also mark a top or resistance level. Forming after an advance, a Hanging Man signals that selling pressure is starting to increase. The low of the long lower shadow confirms that sellers pushed prices lower during the session. Even though the bulls regained their footing and drove prices higher by the finish, the appearance of selling pressure raises the yellow flag. As with the Hammer, a Hanging Man requires bearish confirmation before action. Such confirmation can come as a gap down or long black candlestick on heavy volume.

I have nothing to worry about ATML... this stock still in bullish mode. I'll keep ATML as long as the Bull Power is tracing up.  When i see higher price but Bull Power ticks down then that's the signal for me to sell.

Se7en,

Stocks behave so differently, I can't say that there is any "usual" behavior after a target is made.  That's why it's a good idea to take at least some profits when targets are MADE.  That "could be" a high in the stock, or close to it.

ROUSSET, France and ECULLY, France, May 22, 2006 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Atmel(R) Corporation (ATML, Trade), a global leader in the development and fabrication of advanced semiconductor solutions, and Adeneo, a leading software engineering center for real-time embedded developments, announced today the release of the official Windows CE(R) BSP for Atmel's newest ARM(R)-based microcontroller, the AT91SAM9261. This BSP, fully compliant with Atmel's AT91SAM9261-EK development board, is available for Windows CE 5.0, the latest version of the Microsoft(R) embedded operating system. It has been certified by Microsoft, indicating that the AT91SAM9261 officially supports Windows CE.

Jacko Wilbrink, Atmel's Product Marketing Manager for ARM microcontrollers, commented, "With the AT91SAM9261, Atmel has released a powerful solution for high-end consumer products. Combined with Adeneo's Windows CE 5.0 BSP, it gives customers the advantage of an industry-leading OS, enabling them to develop rich-featured products in the best time-to-market."

"Adeneo, thanks to its status of 'Microsoft Gold Level Partner' on Windows(R) Embedded, and with 200 engineers in hardware and software design, brings the best warranty of reliable and competitive Windows CE solutions. With this BSP, released to support Atmel's latest ARM-based microcontroller, Adeneo and Atmel confirm three years of close partnership around ARM solutions," said Olivier Pequet, Adeneo's General Director.

"As a result of its Microsoft certification, our BSP is now on the official list of BSPs supported by Microsoft. Having the BSP included on this list is the best assurance of quality and reliability for OEMs looking for a powerful solution to build their Windows CE-based product," said Yannick Chamming's, Windows Embedded MVP, and Manager of Windows CE activities at Adeneo.

PQOAL compliance for the easiest adaptation to custom designs -- Because of its compliance with Microsoft PQOAL (Production-Quality OEM Adaptation Layer) and new PQD (Production Quality Device) specifications, this BSP is the most cost-effective way to develop custom solutions on the AT91SAM9261 under Windows CE with the minimal redesign. Only the portion of the BSP handling board features needs to be reviewed and redesigned and all code linked to the AT91SAM9261 can be reused without modifications.

Fully-featured to cover all customer applications -- The BSP includes all the drivers for the peripherals integrated in AT91SAM9261. This allows targeting of all types of custom solutions. The BSP covers MMI features (display, keyboard, mouse, touch screen, audio, etc.), communications (serial, Ethernet, USB, SPI, 2-wire, etc.) and storage (NAND and NOR Flash, SDCard, etc.).

Strong reliability to warrant the best quality -- The AT91SAM9261 BSP has been qualified using the CETK (Windows CE official test kit), and has been designed to take full advantage of the advanced features of the AT91SAM9261 such as Multi-Layer AHB, Peripheral DMA Controller, Advanced Interrupt Controller, etc.

Microsoft certification obtained -- The AT91SAM9261 BSP has passed all Microsoft certification tests. Consequently, Microsoft recognizes the AT91SAM9261 as officially supporting Windows CE. This award is a quality assurance for an OEM thinking of using Windows CE with the AT91SAM9261. The BSP is listed on the Microsoft website at http://msdn.microsoft.com/embedded/usewinemb/ce/bsp/supbsps/default.aspx.

Atmel shares surge 12% on restructuring plans

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Atmel Corp. (ATML : Atmel Corp
Last: 5.89+0.61+11.55%

11:49am 12/13/2006

5.89, +0.61, +11.6%) shares surged 12% early Wednesday after the chipmaker said it plans to restructure its operations, which includes the sale of two factories in Europe and job cuts. "This is the restructuring announcement that investors have been patiently awaiting," wrote Wedbush Morgan analyst Craig Berger, who lifted his price target on Atmel shares to $8 and reiterated his buy rating. Atmel, in an announcement Tuesday evening, said the restructuring will slash costs by $70 million to $80 million in 2007. Approximately 1,300 employees will cut from its 8,000-person workforce worldwide. Atmel, of San Jose, Calif., makes microcontroller and radio-frequency chips used in cell phones, disk drives, car alarms, camcorders and other applications. In recent trading, shares of Atmel rose 62 cents to $5.90.

Hi,

do you like Zacks.com ? yes...here a good stock.
You select your stocks by fundamental analysis (or help like zacks.com  ;D) but you define your strategy by using techncal analysis. I believe this a great strategy for traders.

What about ATML :
bearish stock said zacks.com

Technical analysis :
it is time..
1. Fibonacci retracement > 50% and not crosses over 6.18
2. Candelstick : several dojis
3. good resistance at the 5.25-5.40 level
4. MA50 < MA200
5. volume is still low despite a bull correction

Our strategy :
sell at 5.30
stop-loss at 5.47
target at 4.45
reaward/risk ratio of 19.10 / 3.20 = 5.96 !!! EXCELLENT STOCK OF THE DAY and if we are wrong loss is limited (risk of 3.20%)

good trades... and don't forget the further rules :
1. protect your capital (2% of risk by operation)
2. never listen news or rumors or this topic ! if you like my analysis, then sell this stock otherwise search another one ! ;)

Atmel, Amkor post better-than-expected profits
Wed Apr 30, 2008 4:56pm EDT

SAN FRANCISCO, April 30 (Reuters) - Chipmakers Atmel Corp (ATML) and Amkor Technology Inc (AMKR) on Wednesday posted better-than-expected profits, giving shares of both companies an initial boost in extended trading.

Atmel cited record shipments of microcontrollers for its strong results and Amkor called its results "solid," reflecting a seasonal slowdown after an exceptionally strong fourth quarter.

Atmel reported first-quarter results of $6.79 million, or 2 cents a share, down from $28.9 million, or 6 cents a share, a year ago, pulled down in part by restructuring charges. Revenue climbed to $411.2 million from $391.3 million.

Analysts, on average, had expected Atmel to earn 1 cent a share on revenue of $403.9 million, according to Reuters Estimates.

Amkor posted a first-quarter profit of $72.0 million, or 36 cents a share, up from $34.6 million, or 18 cents a share, a year ago. Revenue rose to $699.5 million from $651 million.

Amkor, a microchip packaging and testing company based in Chandler, Arizona, bested analysts' average estimate of 26 cents a share in earnings on revenue of $685.2 million.

In after-hours trading, shares of Amkor jumped 10 percent to $10.50 while Atmel initially advanced 1 percent before settling back unchanged, at $3.72.

For the current, second quarter, San Jose, California-based Atmel said it expects revenue to be little changed to up as much as 3 percent versus the first quarter, in line with seasonality and what it said were general market trends.

Atmel did not give a per-share profit forecast.
Amkor issued a similar revenue forecast for the current, second, quarter, noting it expected revenue to increase 1 percent to 3 percent from the first quarter.

It also forecast a gross margin of about 25 percent and net income of 32 cents to 36 cents a share.

Amkor said its net income forecast includes an estimated $9.7 million, with no net tax effect, from a real estate transaction that closed in April.

Atmel Should Outperform...
top-line growth continues to accelerate, driven by solid growth in 8-bit and 32-bit micron rollers and touch-sensing products.
There are a number of positives associated with Atmel's ongoing restructuring. The program includes selling four noncore wafer fabrication operations, consolidating or eliminating fourteen product lines and reducing the workforce by nearly 35%. We expect meaningful results from these actions later this year.

Atmel has a growing microcontrollers business that should contribute to the company's top-line growth going forward. In anticipation of strong results in 2010, we raise our estimates and reiterate our Outperform rating on the stock.

Stock-based compensation expense was $13.2 million in the third quarter of 2010, compared with $21.7 million in the second quarter of 2010 and $7.6 million in the third quarter of 2009.

Income tax benefit of $136.6 million in the third quarter of 2010 included a $150.4 million, or $0.32 per diluted share, tax benefit from the settlement of an IRS tax audit resulting from the release of tax reserves of approximately $102.0 million, plus a $48.4 million tax refund. This compares to an income tax benefit of $39.7 million in the second quarter of 2010 and an income tax provision of $0.4 million in the third quarter of 2009.

Cash provided from operations totaled approximately $95.3 million in the third quarter of 2010, compared with $49.2 million in the second quarter of 2010, and $59.4 million in the third quarter of 2009. Combined cash balances (cash and cash equivalents plus short-term investments) totaled $597.4 million at the end of the third quarter of 2010, an increase of $45.1 million from the end of the prior quarter, and the company had a record net cash balance (cash balances less the current and long-term debt) of $513.3 million at the end of third quarter 2010.

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Atmel® Corporation (Nasdaq:ATML - News), a leader in microcontroller and touch solutions, today announced the maXTouch™ E Series of single-chip capacitive touchscreen controllers for touchscreens from 2 to 12 inches. The mXT224E, mXT384E, mXT540E and mXT768E devices offer enhanced analog sensing with a third generation capacitive touch engine and Atmel's advanced AVR® architecture optimized for capacitive sensing. Offering 224 to 768 nodes, the new series enables system designers to select the industry's most advanced single-chip solution for their touchscreen size and application.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20110207/SF43116 )

Since system noise poses the greatest challenge to touchscreen performance, all devices in the maXTouch E Series offer enhanced analog sensing with improvements to maXTouch's industry-leading noise immunity. The enhancements enable system designers to use lower-cost, shieldless touch sensors, or to take advantage of thinner touchscreen configurations with higher levels of integration. These include "touch-on-lens" and "on-cell" configurations, where the touch sensor is patterned on the protective cover lens or on the display panel, respectively. The enhancements also allow the use of noisy, lower-cost displays and chargers for additional system cost savings.

The benefits of the maXTouch E Series extend beyond system designers and on to consumers. With enhanced noise immunity, these devices are the industry's first to allow consumers to simultaneously use a 2mm passive conductive stylus while continuing to support multi-touch. As with the original maXTouch family, the new series offers consumers support of unlimited touches, fast response times, high accuracy, low power, and superior sensitivity to enable the detection of a fingernail or a user with gloves.

Devices in the maXTouch E Series include the mXT224E – the new generation of the best-selling mXT224 device – offering the enhanced E Series touch engine and Atmel's 8-bit AVR architecture optimized for smartphones and other handheld devices.

The mXT768E is the industry's first 32-bit single-chip touch controller for tablets and other large screen applications up to 12-inches. Based on Atmel's ultra-low-power 32-bit AVR architecture, the mXT768E meets the increased demand on signal processing needed for rejecting unintended touches and maintaining responsiveness on large screens. The mXT540E and mXT384E devices, also based on the advanced 32-bit AVR architecture, offer system designers the right price-to-performance selection for their touchscreen designs, and are appropriate for smaller tablets, e-book readers and high- performance smartphones.

"Single-chip touchscreen controller ICs will simplify the device design, reduce cost and reduce power consumption. These are important factors for mobile phones, and even more critical for slate/tablet PCs," said Dr. Jennifer Colegrove, vice president, emerging display technologies at DisplaySearch. "The worldwide market value of touchscreen modules will reach about $14 billion in 2016, from $4.3 billion in 2009."

"Atmel's maXTouch is the leading solution in the smartphone market today," said Peter Jones, vice president of microcontroller and touch business unit, Atmel Corporation. "The success will continue in 2011 with maXTouch powering several tablet touchscreens recently unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show."

"With the launch of the maXTouch E Series, Atmel shows its continued leadership in the touchscreen market by delivering solutions that set a new standard for touchscreen performance," said Jones.

Atmel offers the industry's most comprehensive portfolio of capacitive touchscreen solutions on the market today. The new maXTouch E Series gives manufacturers more single-chip options to design thinner, sleeker, more cost-effective touchscreen devices, while offering consumers the best touch performance possible. Complete solutions are available with the Atmel maXTouch E Series from a variety of ITO partners, LCD suppliers and touch module vendors. Atmel maXTouch solutions are compatible with a number of operating systems including Android™, Linux and Microsoft® Windows®.

Revenues for the fourth quarter of 2010 were $457.8 million, a 3% increase compared to $444.3 million for the third quarter of 2010, and a 33% increase compared to $343.6 million for the fourth quarter of 2009. Fourth quarter results for 2010 exclude the Smart Card business which was divested at the end of the third quarter of 2010.  Adjusting for the Smart Card divestiture, fourth quarter revenues increased 10% sequentially and 44% from the fourth quarter of the prior year. For the full year 2010, revenues increased 35% to $1.64 billion, compared to $1.22 billion for 2009.

Net income, on a GAAP basis, totaled $223.1 million or $0.47 per diluted share for the fourth quarter of 2010.  Included in fourth quarter 2010 results was a tax benefit of $133.1 million, which included $118.1 million, or $0.25 per diluted share, primarily from releasing reserves for certain deferred tax assets. The fourth quarter 2010 net income compares to net income of $219.8 million or $0.47 per diluted share for the third quarter of 2010, which included a $150.4 million, or $0.32 per diluted share tax benefit related to the resolution of an IRS tax audit, and a net loss of $83.3 million or $0.18 per diluted share for the year-ago quarter, including one-time charges. For the full year 2010, income tax benefit was $306.7 million which compares to an income tax benefit of $26.5 million for the full year of 2009.  During 2010, the company favorably settled tax audits and released reserves for certain deferred tax assets which contributed $247.9 million of the total tax benefit recorded for the year.

Cash provided from operations totaled approximately $84.6 million for the fourth quarter of 2010, compared to $95.3 million for the third quarter of 2010 and $55.2 million for the fourth quarter of 2009.  Combined cash balances (cash and cash equivalents plus short-term investments) totaled $521.0 million at the end of the fourth quarter of 2010, a decrease of $76.4 million from the end of the prior quarter.  During the fourth quarter of 2010, the company repaid $80 million of its revolving credit facility and repurchased $48 million of common stock.  Net cash balance (cash balances less current and long-term debt) was the highest in the company's history at $517.0 million at December 31, 2010.

Notes to Non-GAAP Financial Measures

To supplement its consolidated financial results presented in accordance with GAAP, Atmel uses non-GAAP financial measures, including non-GAAP net income (loss) and non-GAAP net income per diluted share, which are adjusted from the most directly comparable GAAP financial measures to exclude certain items, as shown above and described below. Management believes that these non-GAAP financial measures reflect an additional and useful way of viewing aspects of Atmel's operations that, when viewed in conjunction with Atmel's GAAP results, provide a more comprehensive understanding of the various factors and trends affecting Atmel's business and operations.

Atmel uses each of these non-GAAP financial measures for internal purposes and believes that these non-GAAP measures provide meaningful supplemental information regarding operational and financial performance. Management uses these non-GAAP measures for strategic and business decision making, internal budgeting, forecasting and resource allocation processes. Atmel may, in the future, determine to present non-GAAP financial measures other than those presented in this release, which it believes may be useful to investors. Any such determinations will be made with the intention of providing the most useful information to investors and will reflect information used by the company's management in assessing its business, which may change from time to time.

Atmel believes that providing these non-GAAP financial measures, in addition to the GAAP financial results, is useful to investors because the non-GAAP financial measures allow investors to see Atmel's results "through the eyes" of management as these non-GAAP financial measures reflect Atmel's internal measurement processes. Management believes that these non-GAAP financial measures enable investors to better assess changes in each key element of Atmel's operating results across different reporting periods on a consistent basis. Thus, management believes that each of these non-GAAP financial measures provides investors with another method for assessing Atmel's operating results in a manner that is focused on the performance of its ongoing operations. In addition, these non-GAAP financial measures may facilitate comparisons to Atmel's historical operating results and to competitors' operating results.

There are limitations in using non-GAAP financial measures because they are not prepared in accordance with GAAP and may be different from non-GAAP financial measures used by other companies. In addition, non-GAAP financial measures may be limited in value because they exclude certain items that may have a material impact upon Atmel's reported financial results. Management compensates for these limitations by providing investors with reconciliations of the non-GAAP financial measures to the most directly comparable GAAP financial measures. The presentation of non-GAAP financial information is not meant to be considered in isolation or as a substitute for or superior to the most directly comparable GAAP financial measures. The non-GAAP financial measures supplement, and should be viewed in conjunction with, GAAP financial measures. Investors should review the reconciliations of the non-GAAP financial measures to their most directly comparable GAAP financial measures as provided in above.

As presented in the "Reconciliation of GAAP Net Income (Loss) to Non-GAAP Net Income" tables above, each of the non-GAAP financial measures excludes one or more of the following items:

Stock-based compensation expense.

Stock-based compensation expense relates primarily to equity awards such as stock options and restricted stock units.  This includes stock-based compensation expense related to performance-based restricted stock units for which Atmel recognizes stock-based compensation expense to the extent management believes it probable that Atmel will achieve the performance criteria which occurs before these awards actually vest. If the performance goals are unlikely to be met, no compensation expense is recognized and any previously recognized compensation expense is reversed.  Stock-based compensation is a non-cash expense that varies in amount from period to period and is dependent on market forces that are often beyond Atmel's control. As a result, management excludes this item from Atmel's internal operating forecasts and models. Management believes that non-GAAP measures adjusted for stock-based compensation provide investors with a basis to measure Atmel's core performance against the performance of other companies without the variability created by stock-based compensation as a result of the variety of equity awards used by other companies and the varying methodologies and assumptions used.

Acquisition-related charges.

Acquisition-related charges include: (1) amortization of intangibles, which include acquired intangibles such as customer relationships, backlog, core developed technology, trade names and non-compete agreements and (2) contingent compensation expense, which include compensation resulting from the employment retention of certain key employees established in accordance with the terms of the acquisitions. In most cases, these acquisition-related charges are not factored into management's evaluation of potential acquisitions or Atmel's performance after completion of acquisitions, because they are not related to Atmel's core operating performance. In addition, the frequency and amount of such charges can vary significantly based on the size and timing of acquisitions and the maturities of the businesses being acquired. Excluding acquisition-related charges from non-GAAP measures provides investors with a basis to compare Atmel against the performance of other companies without the variability caused by purchase accounting.

Charges for grant repayments.

Grant repayments primarily relate to contractual obligations to repay incentive amounts received from various government entities recorded in prior periods (including interest) as a result of restructuring activity.  Atmel excludes these amounts from non-GAAP financial measures primarily because grant repayments occur infrequently, and excluding ongoing related interest charges enhances the ability of investors to compare Atmel's period-over-period operating results from continuing operations.

Restructuring charges.

Restructuring charges primarily relate to expenses necessary to make infrastructure-related changes to Atmel's operating costs.  Restructuring charges are excluded from non-GAAP financial measures because they are not considered core operating activities. Although Atmel has engaged in various restructuring activities in recent years, each has been a discrete event based on a unique set of business objectives. Atmel believes that it is appropriate to exclude restructuring charges from Atmel's non-GAAP financial measures, as it enhances the ability of investors to compare Atmel's period-over-period operating results from continuing operations.

Asset impairment charges.

When certain criteria are met, Atmel records an impairment charge for the difference between the fair value and the carrying value of the assets.  Atmel believes that is it is appropriate to exclude these non-cash charges from Atmel's non-GAAP financial measures, as it enhances the ability of investors to compare Atmel's period-over-period operating results from continuing operations.

Loss (gain) on sale of assets.

Atmel recognizes losses (gains) resulting from the sale of certain non-strategic assets that no longer align with Atmel's long-term operating plan. Atmel excludes these items from its non-GAAP financial measures primarily because these losses (gains) are individually discrete events and generally not reflective of the ongoing operating performance of Atmel's business and can distort the period-over-period comparison.

Pension charge related to fab sale.

Pension charge related to fab sale relates to pension charges associated with the release of related accumulated other comprehensive loss as a result of Atmel's sale of its manufacturing operations in Rousset, France and the transfer of employees to the fab buyer. Atmel believes that it is appropriate to exclude this adjustment from Atmel's non-GAAP financial measures, as it enhances the ability of investors to compare Atmel's period-over-period operating results from continuing operations.

Distributor bad debt recovery.

Distributor bad debt recovery relates to a reserve and subsequent partial collection for receivables from an Asian distributor whose business was extraordinarily impacted following their addition to the US government's Entity List which prohibits the company from shipping products to the distributor.   Management believes that it is appropriate to exclude this recovery from Atmel's non-GAAP financial measures, as it enhances the ability of investors to compare Atmel's period-over-period operating results from continuing operations.

Unsolicited M&A expense.

The company incurred certain expenses for corporate advisors related to the 2009 take-over bid from Microchip Technology, Inc. and ON Semiconductor Corporation.  Management believes that it is appropriate to exclude these expenses from Atmel's non-GAAP financial measures, as it enhances the ability of investors to compare Atmel's period-over-period operating results from continuing operations.

Income tax effect of non-GAAP items.

Atmel adjusts for the income tax effect resulting from the non-GAAP adjustments as described above.

Non-GAAP tax adjustments

Atmel adjusts for unusual or one-time tax items such as significant tax audit settlements and valuation reserve adjustments on deferred tax assets. Management believes that it is appropriate to exclude these items from Atmel's non-GAAP financial measures, as it enhances the ability of investors to compare Atmel's period-over-period operating results from continuing operations.

Very nice!
The Atmel® maXTouch™ mXT768E has generated much buzz in the tech industry as personal tablets look to be the next big thing. Tablet sales are estimated to reach 24 million by the end of this year, which will increasingly put pressure on the personal laptop market that is already struggling. Netbooks took off a few years ago, but personal tablets are luring potential netbook customers away and towards the future. With many tablets prices only $100 more than a typical netbook, netbook manufactures may have an increasingly difficult time in an already cutthroat and low margin market.

ATML  Chip Path Design Systems Unveils Semiconductor IP Centric...  by Business Wire  May 25 2011 9:29AM

CUPERTINO, Calif., May 25, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Chip Path Design Systems today announced details of its Semiconductor IP Chip Design approach. The new approach centers on one common Semantic-IC Specification with the ability to map to multiple implementation styles and understanding of complete project costs. For the first time, visibility of implementation timelines and costs become visible across ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit), FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array), and production-ready ASSP (Application Specific Standard Product) devices. This System Level Design paradigm stands to revolutionize how designs are implemented and IC economics are visualized.

Semiconductor IP Design distills into just three main design components: I/O Channels, Subsystems, and NoC (Network-On-Chip). Semiconductor IP (IP) components are then chosen based on requirements and implementation. Specifications can run through a RFQ Compiler (Request-for-Quote) mapping architecture onto ASIC technology choices as well as FPGA devices from various vendors like Xilinx, Altera, Lattice, etc. Finally, the specification can be evaluated against existing ASSP products such as TIs OMAP, Atmel's microcontrollers, etc. Chip Path's approach enables tradeoff analysis like never before.

Design projects have volume, time-to-market and cost requirements creating the need for a profitability analysis in any implementation. Chip Path's approach is the first step in rolling up Electronic Design Automation (EDA) and Semiconductor IP into one project-centric design paradigm, removing barriers between final implementation choices.

One single mappable architectural Semantic-IC Specification defines the design. As 28nm FPGAs enter the market, ASIC and FPGA capabilities are merging but large differences in time-to-market and cost remain. Because of this, designers need to consider choices carefully, understanding all hidden costs. Prior to Chip Path's approach, it has been difficult to determine the tradeoffs between part cost, time-to-market, design conversion, free versus pay IP, and millions of dollars in up-front NRE costs against each other. The evaluation of thousands of FPGA devices and thirteen SoCs (Systems-on-Chip), made possible by Chip Path, is set to forever revolutionize how designs are planned, integrated, and implemented.

Chip Path has aggregated extensive databases of models for Semiconductor IP with over 14,000 entries, IC-Technologies from 14nm to 0.35um (13 nodes), and over 9,000 FPGA devices. These databases are at the heart of a very rapid and accurate compilation methodology. Chip Path's benefit also extends to shortening implementation time with seamless transition to the design phase. Choosing Semiconductor IP is but one aspect; more important is the integration and realization of a product.

"Semiconductor IP is used in all chip designs today," said CEO George Janac. "We are creating a Cut-and-Paste design methodology based on it. Chip-to-chip I/O Channels, Subsystems, and NoC (Network-on-Chip or Fabrics) are the best implementation abstractions. Design Planning (Floorplanning) is entering the Semiconductor IP level with a dramatic shortening of implementation time and superior results."

Chip level integration is simplified by moving up to an I/O Channel level of abstraction. Off-chip interfaces are modeled as connectors (PCIe, DDR3, CAN, Interlaken, and about 80 others). Channels are simply collections of IP that go from I/O Connectors to one or more, on-chip bus connectors. Chip Path's design knowledge is a key component in helping to make IP-based floorplanning a reality.

Chip Path's on-chip connector based assembly approach enables rapid integration of ASIC and FPGA. Each IP has one or more connectors using protocols like AMBA, AXI4, OCP-IP, Wishbone, Avalon, and only about 8 others. The full Semiconductor IP Methodology defines an IPCN (IP Connection Network) integrating the entire chip. The IPCN has multiple levels, including clock, reset, test, interrupt, point-to-point networks, with the NoC (Network-on-Chip) or Bus-Fabric remaining the central connectivity paradigm. Connectors allow Memory Mapped (MM) or Streamed (ST) interfaces along with point-to-point hookup. Chip Path's catalog today contains over 1,200 IP with NoC connectors. With these, chip assembly is simply a process of defining how various connectors talk to each other. Writing machine readable specifications allows automatic connectivity generation. A CPU centric approach helps bring information from each Semiconductor IP to the processors, via the NoC, for creation of address maps driving software development.

Chip Path is making a methodology datasheet available on its website. Registered users can find the datasheet at: http://www.chippath.com/approach/IPCentricDesign . Additionally, tools will be on display at the Design Automation Conference (DAC) from June 5-10 in San Diego, CA.

Shortening time-to-market and cost reduction are major benefits of the Chip Path approach. Semiconductor IP Chip Design gives users visibility like never before. The company has been working with major vendors and key partners to qualify its approach.

Atmel Corp (ATML): Zacks Rank Buy

On Wednesday May 25, 2011, 1:00 am EDT
Atmel, Corp (NasdaqGS: ATML - News) posted a record high revenue level last quarter and estimates are on the rise. With shares holding a Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) the stock is poised for a great 2011.

Additionally, management is expected to update guidance in June. If they move the outlook higher shares could really take off.

Company Description

Atmel makes microcontrollers, capacitive touch solutions, advanced logic and other highly technical products. The company's offerings are used in industrial, consumer, communications, computing and automotive applications.

Revenue Hit Record High

Atmel said its first quarter revenue grew 32% since last year to a record-high $461 million, over $8 million more than analysts expected. Quarterly results came out on May 4 and included results from the a divestiture. If that is adjusted the revenues rose 43%.

Net income was $74.6 million, up dramatically from $16.6 million a year ago. That works out to $0.16 per share and was a penny better than expected. Not a huge surprise but enough to give Atmel its third consecutive beat.

The company continues to buy back shares, repurchasing 5.7 million last quarter and authorizing another $300 million worth.

Cloudy Outlook

Atmel said that it revenue to land between $466 and $480 million this quarter, a 1-4% increase. That lead to shares opening lower on the new as analysts were expecting $473 million and in this market, guiding in-line with expectations is just not enough.

But, that could change next month. Atmel alluded to updating guidance in June at a Barclays conference. Of course that could go either way, but for now estimates are up.

Full-year estimates are averaging $0.77 for this year, up 6 cents on the earnings results. Next year's Zacks Consensus Estimate rose 8 cents, to $0.95 per share. Last year Atmel earned $0.48, so expected growth rates are now 60% and 24%, respectively.

Valuations

Shares of ATML are exchanging hands at about 18 times that 2011 estimate, not too bad. But factor in the almost 19% expected long-term growth rate and you get a PEG of 1.0 and a solid value.

The Chart

ATML is no stranger to volatility, but after taking a look at the long-term earnings trend it looks like that risk may be worth taking. Solid year-over-year growth and consistent rising throughout the year are both great signs.
