I don't own this TG. Does anyone know why the damage? They had earnings yesterday, but that can't be the total story??
Along with steady influx of class action suit against them, this happened as well.

MADRID, Spain, May 09, 2006 (AP Worldstream via COMTEX) -- Spanish police arrested nine people and raided the offices of two leading stamp collection companies as part of an investigation into alleged stamp investment fraud that could affect as many as 350,000 small investors, authorities said Tuesday.
Some 300 National Police officers took part in raids in five towns across the country directed against Forum Filatelico and Afinsa Bienes Tangibles, a major collectibles and auction firm. Afinsa is also the majority owner of NASDAQ-traded Escala Group with a 67 percent stake, or 18.2 million shares as of March 2006.
The Afinsa investigation sent Escala stock tumbling in pre-market trading on INET Tuesday. At 1258 GMT, Escala shares were down 45.4 percent at ?13.67 (US$17.46). Escala was previously known as Greg Manning Auctions, based in the U.S. state of New Jersey.
The operation forms part of a joint investigation launched by the National Court, tax authorities, financial crime prosecutors and the National Police over an alleged pyramid-type scheme based on overpriced stamps and other collectibles...

Afinsa and Forum Filatelico Stamp Fraud
Dear Sirs, Madams, Club's members and users,
You almost certainly know about the Afinsa and Forum Filatelico Scam, that have been shut down by the authorities. This companies sold investments plans in stamps for 1000x the real value on the market with the promise to buy back in future (ten years latter) at the sale price more 7% of interest at year. This interest is the double what a client could get at any commercial bank. If the business was clear good I am sure the banks was available to invest too. But, the banks and the smart people don't invest in this Ponzi schemes because every smart guy knows is impossible a company (with good rating) pay for the money 2x the the current interest in the market to finance their activate. In this case investment in stamps.
The stamps market are depending, like any other market, from the offer and demand. And for this anyone can't to guarantee the price of the stamps in the future. Naturally, what this companies were doing is paying the annual interest to older clients with their own money and with the money invested by the new clients. If an investiture give a 1.000USD, they can pay 8% for year for ten years with their own money and take 20% for the companies more interest in the bank. After the ten years a new fool will be pay the older.
The Afinsa and Forum Filatelico are financially insolvent. And none of the investments were insured by the government or central bank, as bank deposits are. This kind of activity doesn't have regulation and for this was easy stay twenty-five years open to public.
One of the first signal of troubles was when the GMI change this ticker and name to ESCL, Escala Group. In this time some people was talk about the possible Ponzi Pyramid in this kind of investment.
The Think Finance - Investor Intelligence worked since 2003 to expose those Ponzi scheme. They send a lot of information to the authorities and we believe they are the setup up for the beginning of the end of this scam. This website is well known for the good articles about the stock market trading and having denounced the PIPS scam and helped hasten the demise of the fraud, other Ponzi scheme with origin in Malaysia.
With this stamp fraud is possible the consumer confidence takes a major hit, with some of the victims completed wiped out. If this scam could continue for some more years know is impossible. The "bank" run of the investors to this companies will be finish them leaving this companies without liquidity to fulfil the commitments with all investors. When all clients wanted their money back at the same time the result is the bankrupt. In this case I think few investors will be waiting to the maturity of the contracts to take their money back.
For know other similar schemes continue operating, out there selling some more "tangible goods", like the Afinworld or the Arte Y Naturaleza.
This scam can be interest to the trades who want speculate with the bankrupt of this two companies. Special Afinsa trough Escala Group.
Escala Group is a US company listed in Nasdaq (ESCL:Nasdaq) and controlled at 68% by Afinsa. The important here is not Afinsa be the owner of Escala Group but be the best client. Afinsa has been the best client of the stamps and coins of Escala Group since 2003. So, the Escala Group depends their financial activity on Afinsa.
I think the Escala Group will be to the bankrupt too, and it is a long term good short for sure, but the only problem on this days is the bad news are deducted in the price and any good news (or not bad) can make the stock rise a lot, because the short of free float is 75.69% (4.859.221 shares short), with a short ratio (days to cover) of 29.3, can to provoke a strong short squeeze.
I am following this scheme and the price movements of Escala Group and in the development of the news or a trading opportunity a will post here.
Sincerely,
Orson Vaughan

And here we are one and a half-month later and we have a full-blown short squeeze.
There is news out in Spain and Escala just reported monthly US record auctions: http://home.businesswire.com/portal/site/google/index.jsp?ndmViewId=news_view&newsId=20060706005463&newsLang=en
- and the shorts are running for cover.
But the story is even better now because the short position was 6.5 million in June and probably much higher now.
Today was the first day of a very long and painful short squeeze and the stock is already up 44% (wish I knew how to post these fancy charts!)
Can't wait for the trading to start tomorrow. This one will run faster than the shorts can cover.
GLTA
shorts will start covering ;D

Escala Makes Regulation SHO List, Spurs Shorts
Escala Group Inc. (Nasdaq: ESCL) made the Regulation SHO List yesterday. The list, which is published each business day well after the end of trading could have convinced short sellers to cover their shorts before it got too late. According to SEC regulation, a stock that has met the threshold security requirements for five consecutive trading days, must have their short positions cleared below the requirements before thirteen days after being on the list. If the short position is not cleared now, then a forced buyout could be initiated at that time. With that being said, short sellers must be nervous as there are 6.41 million shares short with the public trading float of Escala at just 6.43 million shares. Additionally urging the shorts to cover was an article circulated this afternoon, reporting that the European Commission had decided it would not investigate two cases of fraud linked to stamp-trading company Alfinsa. Hence, there was a spike in afternoon trading by $.92 to $6.14 on heavy volume of 1.6 million shares.

The European Commission has said that it will not be investigating the two cases of fraud linked to the stamp-trading companies. Forum Filatélico and Afinsa in Spain, said that the responsibilities are entirely national. This is because neither company is thought to have broken European stock trading law.

If it doesn't pull back tomorrow, this could have something to it... a move above 6.50 should give it some legs. Symmetrical triangle breakout that measures 6.50-4.20 = 2.30 + 5.21 = 7.51 target. After that next solid resistance looks to be around 9.20.
Will keep an eye on it ;)

I almost bought this stock at $4, and as I was deliberating, it got halted. It opened around 7 on good news, and I bought it as per my post in this thread, wound up making a little money holding it about a day. Would like to make some real money on it though, so I will be watching too. If enough people like us jump back in, shorts will fry and prices will rise!
I just noticed that Yahoo doesnt have any confirmation of the good news in this stock yet, and instead Motely Fool published one of their stock sinker articles about the stock tonight.

Probably the founders are short or something, I never trust those guys, but their articles do move stocks as I have found out to my detriment in the past with stocks like NVAX, etc.
The chart is shoeing strength.%@ wk high was35 now it is sitting at 5.16.10 dma just crossed over 20 dema. Also the stock was side tracking since middle oct.It is breaking that chanel. Good luck
ESCL is so on fire. :o

kslifka,
It sure is on fire, I almost pulled the trigger when it retraced to 6.50...but I chicken out because of the general market acting bearish today.
Congrats to anyone holding this one, nice gain so far.
I got in at 8.06 and it took off to 8.90 so I just place a stop order in at 8.40.
This is a 10 on the risk factor...but huge momentum going north. If it is true about the huge short position...they will have to buy back at some point. I would feel more confident if they would have also restated earnings, etc. and they were positive.
Now the fun part is when to sell at 3:55pm...after hours it will move in one direction or the other? Or wait to see if Wednesday brings more action to the upside.

ESCL just put in a new high even after going parabolic and pulling back. :o
As far as longer term. There is a good chance (better than 50%) of this pulling back tomorrow....but you just never know. I will look for an entry tomorrow or the next. ;D
Good luck
I read between the lines and sold .85 profit...being greedy can backfire for sure. I will also look for a better entry point to get back in...it might happen after hours.
I have been reading that amature investors buy at the open...and most professionals buy at the end of the day? Not much info available about after hours trading....except it is dangerous.

NEW YORK, Dec 19, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Escala Group (ESCL, Trade) announced today that the Company will restate its previously reported financial statements for its fiscal years ended June 30, 2003; June 30, 2004; June 30, 2005; and for the first three quarters of the fiscal year ended June 30, 2006.
The Company previously reported that its Board of Directors had directed the Audit Committee to review the transactions between the Company and the Company's majority shareholder, Afinsa Bienes Tangibles, S.A. ("Afinsa").
The Audit Committee's investigation is complete, and based on the findings of that investigation and after consultation with the acting Chief Executive Officer, the Company's Board of Directors and Audit Committee have determined to restate the Company's financial statements. The Company is considering the precise extent of the restatement, but expects that the restatement will relate primarily to the reporting of certain of the transactions between the Company and Afinsa, the totality of which had been reported in its financial statements as "related-party sales" and which are now part of the Company's discontinued operations, as described below. Specifically, certain archival sales for which the cash consideration received from Afinsa was recognized entirely as revenue from a related party should have been recorded as a combination of revenue from a related party and additional paid-in capital. Archival sales refer to cash sales to Afinsa of large and unique collections of archival material for which, in most cases, there was no substantial sales history. These sales represented a significant portion of the Company's previously reported revenues for the years ended June 30, 2006, 2005 and 2004. The Company currently estimates that such archival sales comprised approximately $73 million of the $417 million in total sales to Afinsa over the time period in question, but such sales accounted for a larger percentage contribution to the gross profits recorded during the period.
As previously disclosed, the Company has ceased its global stamp and supply operations with designated sales to Afinsa. The Company has identified its separable and material business operations that were affected (and subsequently shut down as a result), and has classified them as discontinued operations in accordance with Statement of Financial Accounting Standard No. 144. As a result of this reclassification of the Company's global supply operations as discontinued operations, any restatement is not expected to materially affect the results from continuing operations. Rather, the Company believes that any such restatement will be largely contained within discontinued operations and would be evidenced by decreased revenues from discontinued operations, decreased net income and decreased retained earnings, the latter of which would be offset by an identical increase in additional paid-in capital, with the net result being no overall change to the Company's total stockholders' equity and cash position, when viewed cumulatively over the time period in question.
Although it is possible that other aspects of the Company's previously reported financial statements will be restated, the Company is not currently aware of any other issues that would necessitate restatement. The Company has discussed the matters described above with its independent outside auditors, Amper, Politziner & Mattia, P.C., and is filing a Form 8-K with the SEC in connection with its restatement decision. This 8-K will address, among other things, the impact of the restatement on the Company's assessments of the effectiveness of its internal control over financial reporting as of the applicable periods.
Results of Audit Committee Investigation
On December 15, 2006, the Audit Committee presented to the Company's Board of Directors the results of its investigation into the Company's transactions with Afinsa.
During the course of its investigation, the Audit Committee retained the independent law firm of Kirkland & Ellis LLP, which in turn engaged independent accounting consultants, to investigate and report to the Audit Committee. With its advisors, the Committee examined the business transactions that the Company had entered into with Afinsa between June 2003 (the time of the first significant sale to Afinsa) and May 2006 (when Spanish authorities closed Afinsa's operations), including various major sales of inventory to Afinsa.
The Audit Committee's conclusions presented to the Board included the following:
-- Based on the evidence available to it, the Committee found no evidence that the Company had attempted either to defraud Afinsa or to collude with Afinsa in attempting to defraud Afinsa's customers or the Company's investors.
-- Based on the evidence available to it, the Committee concluded that the transactions between the Company and Afinsa were valid; in other words, the Company delivered to Afinsa authentic philatelic materials and Afinsa made payment to the Company in accordance with the terms of the documents that described the transactions.
-- Based on the evidence available to it, the Committee concluded that certain of the historical disclosures regarding certain aspects of the transactions between the Company and Afinsa were inaccurate or incomplete. The Audit Committee also concluded that any such disclosure inadequacies were unintentional and were not made with any intent to mislead Escala's investors. As a result, the Committee recommended that it be left to the Company to consider what, if any, additional action needs to be taken with respect to those disclosures.
-- Based on the evidence and professional advice available to it, the Committee concluded that the Company should restate certain of its historical financial statements with respect to its reporting of certain transactions with Afinsa, and recommended that the Company consider and determine the scope of such restatement.
The Audit Committee also made certain recommendations to the Board, which are designed to strengthen the Company's internal controls and provide for an increased review of related party transactions. The Board has adopted these recommendations and is in the process of implementing them.
Matthew Walsh, President, CFO and acting CEO commented, "Our Board of Directors was committed to ensuring that the Audit Committee investigation was thorough, complete and conducted with the utmost integrity. The Committee was given complete freedom to consider any matters it felt were appropriate, and the Committee and its counsel received the full cooperation of the Company. I am pleased to report that no present or former employees declined to cooperate with the investigation. In addition, we continue to cooperate fully with the SEC formal investigation."
Mr. Walsh continued, "Our goal now is to move quickly to completing the accounting review and restatement process, file our 10-K for the period ended June 30, 2006 and 10-Q for the quarter ended September 30, 2006, and refocus our efforts towards our core operations with a view towards maximizing shareholder value. We intend to implement the remedial measures recommended by the Audit Committee as promptly as possible, and we will continue to look for other ways to ensure that our operations are conducted with complete transparency and adherence to the highest standards."
Greg Roberts, President of the Numismatics and Precious Metals Trading Divisions, stated, "We are grateful to our customers, shareholders and valued employees for their commitment to the Company during this challenging time. Our company has significant continuing operations in collectibles -- stamps, coins, arms, armor and militaria -- and precious metals trading that we are committed to growing. Speaking for myself and for everyone at Escala and its Group Companies, we are eager to pursue the growth plans that we have developed for our core businesses."

Future events, risks and uncertainties, individually or in the aggregate, could cause actual results to differ materially from those expressed or implied in these statements. In particular, any statement related to Escala Group's expected revenues or earnings or Escala Group's being well positioned for future profitability and growth are forward-looking statements.
In addition, the Company faces substantial uncertainty as a result of recent events surrounding Afinsa. In particular, readers should note the following: (1) Since May 9, 2006, Afinsa and certain of its executives have been the subject of a criminal investigation in Spain. While the Company has not been notified that either it or any of its current directors, officers or employees is a target of this inquiry, there can be no assurance that the Company or such persons will not be named in the future. (2) The nature, scope and estimated impact of expected restatements is preliminary and may change based upon additional analysis by the Company or its auditors. (3) Although, as of the present time, the Audit Committee has concluded its investigation of the matters described above, the Audit Committee, the Company's Board of Directors, or other committees of the Board of Directors may reconsider these matters, or consider additional matters, or make additional findings, if they receive additional information or if they deem such a review to be appropriate in light of future developments, including the Company's cooperation with governmental authorities; (4) the Company continues to cooperate with an SEC inquiry, which may lead to changes in the Company's accounting policies and practices, restatement of financial statements, and/or otherwise be adverse to the Company. (5) Afinsa is currently involved in insolvency proceedings before a commercial court in Madrid. The court has appointed three trustees to oversee the operations of Afinsa. The effect of this action on the Company, approximately 67% of whose stock is owned collectively by Afinsa and its wholly owned subsidiary, Auctentia, S.L., cannot be determined at this time. (6) Central de Compras Coleccionables S.L., the Company's Spanish subsidiary, is the subject of separate customs and tax inspections in Spain. The outcome of these proceedings cannot be determined at this time. (7) As a result of the events of May 9, 2006, Escala and certain of its officers and directors have been named in eight putative class action lawsuits (now consolidated) and two derivative lawsuits (now consolidated) relating to the Company's affiliation and dealings with Afinsa. The outcome of these lawsuits cannot be determined at this time. (8) The Company is expected to incur significant expenses in connection with the SEC inquiry and the class actions and derivative lawsuits. (9) The Company faces substantial business and financial risks and uncertainties as a result of the loss of Afinsa as its major customer. (10) As a result of the failure to file its 10-K for the year ended June 30, 2006 and its 10-Q for the quarter ended September 30, 2006, the Company is not in compliance with the continued listing requirements of the Nasdaq Stock Market and has received delisting determination letters from Nasdaq. A hearing was held before the Nasdaq Hearing Panel on November 16, 2006, at which time the Company requested a conditional extension to remain listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. There can be no assurance that the Panel will grant the Company's request for an extension or, if an extension is granted by the Panel, that the Company will be able to file its requisite reports by such date. If the Company is not granted an extension of time to file its reports, or fails to file its reports prior to any additional deadline, the Company's securities would be subject to delisting.

I seem to have the magic touch this week... the bad kind. It seems like whenever I start posting on the board about a certain stock, it tops out either that day or the next. :-\
Nice to see ESCL close on top of the 200dma today on very high volume but the candlestick complicates things and then the price action wasn't great either. Should make for an interesting day tomorrow. AH is up about 3%.
