Jones Soda Keeps Poppin' ;D
Producing another quarter that was more fizz than flat, alternative-beverage upstart Jones Soda (Nasdaq: JSDA - News) saw its fourth-quarter sales spike 37% higher as it turned a profit of $0.03 a share for the period. It simply broke even a year earlier. The top- and bottom-line results came in better than the lone analyst's expectations.
The bottler of premium sodas with user-submitted labels has picked its distribution partners well. You can find Jones Soda bottles in places like Starbucks (Nasdaq: SBUX - News), Panera Bread (Nasdaq: PNRA - News), and Barnes & Noble (NYSE: BKS - News). Its eclectic sodas in canned form can be bought at Target (NYSE: TGT - News).
Jones Soda is available in several grocery store chains, too, but the non-supermarket retailers provides a good glimpse as to how the company is targeting fast-growing chains that will help the company broaden its reach organically.
Speaking of organic, the company continues to make inroads in the energy-drink market, but it's not alone. Given the success that Hansen Naturals (Nasdaq: HANS - News) has had lately with its Monster beverage, it seems as though most of the industry players want to mash together their own Monsters. Jones Soda mentioned that 400 different energy drinks have been launched in the past six months alone. It's why Jones Soda's flagship sodas should continue to be the real drivers here.
Jones Soda has personality, and that's not something that its larger carbonated-soda rivals like Cadbury Schweppes (NYSE: CSG - News) are likely to inherit anytime soon. Now the challenge will be for Jones Soda to continue to grow without shedding its distinctive spirit along the way. If it survived being canned up at cheap-chic Target, I like its chances in 2006.
Longtime Fool contributor Rick Munarriz actually enjoyed the Jones Soda candy corn, pumpkin, and caramel apple sodas from Target last year during its Halloween promotion. He also owns shares in Jones Soda. The Fool has a disclosure policy. Rick is also part of the Rule Breakers newsletter research team, seeking out tomorrow's ultimate growth stocks a day early.
Looking better..... :D

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 4, 2006--Jones Soda Co. (NASDAQ:JSDA - News; TSX VENTURE:JSDA - News; the "Company" or "Jones"), today announced financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2006.
Revenue for the first quarter of fiscal 2006 increased 27.4% to $8,760,380 compared to $6,874,176 for the first quarter of fiscal 2005. Net income was $2,542 or $0.00 per diluted share, versus $16,928, or $0.00 per diluted share, for the same period last year.
The Company implemented Financial Accounting Standard No. 123 (revised 2004), "Share-Based payments" (FAS 123R), in the first quarter of 2006. As a result, first quarter earnings include $386,703 of stock-related expense, compared to $4,884 of such expense for the first quarter of 2005. Excluding the impact of the stock related compensation, earnings in the first quarter of 2006 were $0.02 per diluted share, compared to $0.00 per diluted share for the first quarter of 2005.
Gross margin for the first quarter increased 310 basis points to 35.6% versus 32.5% in the first quarter of the prior year. Operating expenses as a percentage of sales for the first quarter increased to 36.7% from 33.8% in the corresponding period in the prior year. Excluding the stock options expense, operating expenses as a percentage of sales for the first quarter improved to 32.3% from 33.8% in the first quarter of last year.
Management believes that the presentation of non-GAAP financial measures provides useful information to investors regarding the Company's income from operations and comparisons to prior years' results.
Peter van Stolk, President and CEO stated, "Our first quarter results were fueled by strong demand across the board and represent a solid beginning to fiscal 2006. During the quarter we continued to take advantage of our enhanced sales and marketing platform to drive meaningful top-line growth, while at the same time we experienced a 310 basis point improvement in gross margin. Equally important, our balance sheet is substantially improved compared to a year ago. As we approach the key summer selling season, we are encouraged by the pace of our business and our entire organization remains focused on successfully executing our strategic plan."
Mr. van Stolk continued, "We are very pleased with the recent performances of our Direct Store Distribution (DSD) and Direct to Retail (DTR) business segments. First quarter revenues were also driven by the launch of our inaugural Valentines Day Soda Pack featuring "Love Potion #6" which was a big hit with consumers and surpassed all of our internal expectations."
Mr. van Stolk concluded, "We have accomplished much over the past year and as a result of our efforts our brand awareness is growing and our emotional connection with consumers has never been stronger. Importantly, we recently solidified our management team and board of directors with the addition of several key individuals. Today, we operate a powerful portfolio of products each with multiple long-term prospects and we are confident we have the right systems and people in place to take this company to the next level. We move forward excited about the many opportunities we have created in the marketplace and committed to returning significant value to our shareholders."

JSDA is moving away from their goal to be an up scale designer beverage. K-Mart will do for them what it did to Martha Stewart - bring in some revenue, but soil the name they worked on. They may no longer be cool. What next, will they start selling Panera bread and Starbucks in K-Mart?
12 packs of coke and pepsi products sell 4/$10 (5 on a good sale) at local supermarkets. JSDA goes 3/$8 at Target. Maybe they hope to move on volume.

The Long White Candlestick is a signal indicating strong buying pressure.
Important Factors:
The Long White Candlestick is a single candlestick pattern and it is not reliable as such. It reflects only one day's trading. It may show continuation of a trend as well as a possible reversal. The move that took place from the middle of June to the beginning of July thrust the stock to a new all-time high, and it then consolidated in a bullish flag formation before breaking out last Thursday and Friday. The year to date net income for 2006 includes a one-time non-cash income tax benefit of $1,482,934 recorded in the second quarter, related to the reversal of a significant portion of our valuation allowance for net deferred tax assets. Prior to the 2006 second quarter, we maintained a valuation allowance for our deferred tax assets (in accordance with SFAS No. 109, "Accounting for Income taxes") due to the uncertainty regarding the full utilization of our deferred net tax asset.
We implemented Financial Accounting Standard No. 123 (revised 2004), "Share-Based payments" (FAS 123R), in the first quarter of 2006. As a result, third quarter earnings include $187,100 of stock-related expense, compared to no such expense for the third quarter of 2005. Excluding the impact of the stock related compensation, earnings in the third quarter of 2006 were $0.01 per diluted share, compared to $0.04 per diluted share for the third quarter of 2005.
Gross margin for the third quarter increased 70 basis points to 35.5% versus 34.8% in the third quarter of the prior year. Operating expenses as a percentage of sales were 36.9% during the quarter compared to 28.4% for the corresponding period a year ago.
Management believes that the presentation of non-GAAP financial measures provides useful information to investors regarding the Company's income from operations and comparisons to prior years' results.
Peter van Stolk, President and C.E.O stated, "We are pleased with our top line performance for the third quarter which was driven by ongoing strength in our DTR channels of distribution, coupled with revenue growth in our DSD business. We also experienced meaningful gross margin improvement as we continued to benefit from cost efficiencies. However, our earnings were impacted by our strategic decision to focus on the launch of our cans which is slated for the first quarter of 2007. The additional investments in this new operating platform is critical prior to the launch to ensure our future growth plans are achieved."
Mr. van Stolk continued, "During the third quarter we announced a 5-year distribution and manufacturing agreement with National Beverage Corporation for 12-ounce cans of Jones Soda and 16-ounce cans of Jones Energy for the U.S. market beginning in 2007. After a successful 2-year licensing agreement with Target for Jones Soda cans, we now believe it is in the best interests of our company to expand our presence in the $66 billion CSD category. In an effort to maximize our opportunities with our large network of beverage retailers across the country and best prepare for the upcoming launch we are hiring additional personnel, making upgrades to our infrastructure, and increasing our sales and marketing expenditures. We believe these investments will well position us to capitalize on the many prospects we believe exist for this business."
Mr. van Stolk concluded, "We are very pleased with our sales and earnings results for the first nine-months of fiscal 2006 and as we look out to next year, we are very excited about the direction our company is headed. Through our core DSD operating segment and DTR relationships with leading retailers such as Starbucks, Panera Bread, and Barnes & Noble, our brand recognition has grown significantly over the past several years. We now look forward to building on our position with our expansion in the CSD market and taking this company to the next level. We remain committed to delivering long-term profitable growth and returning value to our shareholders."

Cramer pick... On Thursday's edition, Cramer says Jones Soda (JSDA) could be the next Hansen Natural (HANS). Not only do retailers like to sell its products because of high premiums, the company should have 100% EPS growth in a year. In addition, Jones "has an unpenetrated market" and is going regional to national, which typically makes stocks go higher, Cramer said. "It has huge opportunities to expand" and the Jones brand has a "cult-like following," which is only getting bigger. Even though it might not necessarily be the next Hansen Natural, "it deserves to go much higher" and is two or three years away from reaching the top, Cramer said.

Can someone enlighten me as to why this stock is worth $12.30 PPS and guidance for full year 2007 is .12 earnings? I realize Cramer pumped the stock a week ago when in the 10's and stated, "It's still in the growth stage and could be the next HANS, and has 2-3 years more on the growth Cycle and earnings will double in the next year" (summary) Well, that's true, but going from .06 to .12 is hardly enough to justify current valuation, or am I missing something? Please, anyone, what am I missing? Thanks in advance ???

Investors Push Jones Soda to New High
Jones Soda Hits New High As Investors Speculate on Who Will Sell the Pop Company's Cans
The stock has been on the move since the company announced last week that it had signed a five-year contract with National Beverage to distribute the soda in cans for the first time to a host of new retailers.
With the new contract, Jones Soda also said it has secured 25 percent of all retail outlet availability -- a big jump from its previous 2 percent.
The company, though, has said it will not release the names of the retailers until its next conference call with investors and analysts, which is set to take place in March.
The absence of the retailers' names has caused investors to take guesses on where consumers might soon find the flavored sodas, which are being shipped to retailers beginning this week.
Think Equity Partners analyst James Maher called the announcement of the new retailers the "semi-Oscars" to industry watchers.
"We're all looking for who those retailers are," Maher said. "Are they signing up other retailers like Target that sell a great many things?"
The company used to have a contract with Target Corp. to sell its products, but that agreement expired Dec. 31.
Piper Jaffray analyst Nicole Miller said she thinks the retailers will either be large, regional companies or stores with national exposure.
Maher said the stock price may be jumping partly from investors hoping for a "knockout list," possibly including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., the world's largest retailer.
Although Jones Soda Chief Executive Peter van Stolk said he could not say whether Wal-Mart would retail the new cans, he said investors will be pleased with the list.
"I think we've done our job," he said, adding that he has gotten positive responses from both small and large retailers about the product.
Van Stolk attributed the rising stock price -- and retailer enthusiasm -- partially to the changeover from bottles to cans.
"You had Jones playing in a very, very small category," van Stolk said. "When you start to open up and go to cans, that category is much bigger."
He said stores that do not carry glass bottles will now be able to stock the soda, leading to the higher availability.
He said investor enthusiasm could also be coming from the company's new policy of using only cane sugar in its products rather than high fructose corn syrup, which is used in soft drinks made by PepsiCo Inc. and Coca-Cola Co. After March, Jones Soda will only produce soft drinks made with cane sugar.
He added that with the carbonated beverage category declining as consumers look for healthier options, innovation is more appreciated.
"We're coming to retailers with something new," van Stolk said.
Investors, at least, so far have responded well, more than doubling the stock price during the past year.
"It's been on a rocket," Maher said.
The company's earnings have also skyrocketed in the past year. Its profit for the nine months ending Sept. 30 more than tripled from the prior year period. Net income rose to $2.5 million, or 10 cents per share, from $702,781, or 3 cents per share, during the first nine months of 2005. Nine-month revenue rose 17 to $28.9 million.
The company has not yet released its full-year 2006 earnings.
New to this so forgive me if I post incorrectly, INB is in the healthy beverage sector with drinks like acai, noni, mangosteen and pomegranate. They just came out with a new one and placed it in Sams club and walmart. The others are in costco and many drug stores, they sellinternationally, too. Margins are very healthy and have been recording record revenue. Take a look if you like this sector. All thoughts are welcome.

Jones Soda Shares Soar on 4Q Results, Launch of Canned Version at Major Retailers
NEW YORK (AP) -- Investors Friday sweetened shares of Jones Soda Co. after it reported a big profit boost and disclosed new retailers who would carry its cans of pop made with pure cane sugar.
Shares climbed 24.4 percent after the market opened to reach a 52-week high of $17.36. By midday, the shares were up about $2.82, or 20 percent, to $16.77 in volume more than four times its average. The stock has traded between $6.51 and $15.28 during the past year.
The price push came after the Seattle company released its fourth quarter earnings in which profit more than tripled and sales rose 15 percent. Following the release, Jones Soda Chief Executive Peter van Stolk unveiled the company's list of new retailers that would sell its premium pop -- a list that included retailing giants Wal-Mart, Kroger, Kmart and Safeway, among others.
Investors and analysts had been speculating for months about which stores would make the cut. The product is being sold for the first time in cans, which makes it more accessible to retailers and consumers who are wary of glass bottles.
The shift to cans coincides with the move to a concentrate model. Technically, Jones Soda makes the concentrated flavor for the drinks and another company adds the carbonated water and packaging.
Stifel Nicolaus analyst Mark Swartzberg upgraded the shares to "Buy" from "Hold" and established a $20 price target, saying the shift to the concentrate model will improve the company's financials.
"The shift to a concentrate model, driven by the can launch of Jones Pure Cane Soda, increases gross margins due to the comparatively low cost of producing concentrate and the relatively high selling price per case," Swartzberg said in a note to investors.
The analyst said he estimates that revenue per case for the new can product will be $1.20 and the cost to Jones to make the concentrate for the soda is 20 cents per case.
Longbow Research analyst Alton Stump also upgraded the shares to "Buy" from "Neutral" based on the concentrate can launch.
Stump noted the company's successful sales at Target, which sold the cans under a contract that expired Dec. 31. Target will still sell the cans, but the expiration of the contract gave Jones the opening to enlist other major retailers.
"The impressive results seen from the company's can sales in Target during 2005 and 2006, which we believe stemmed largely from the attractive retailer margins offered by Jones Soda, give us confidence the can launch will likely succeed with other retailers in 2007 and beyond," Stump said in an analyst note.
Piper Jaffray analyst Nicole Miller Regan, meanwhile, upped her price target to $18 from $12. ThinkEquity Partners analyst James Maher also raised his price target to $17 from $15 on the news.

Don't look like the Southwest Bear Plane will take off the ground today.
Out to fill the gap.
Jones Soda has a hearty following as an alternative soft drink, but a big reason for the company's success has been the placement of its bottled beverages within the Starbucks chain.
Pay more attention to timing. I think that this stock will drop back down a little, then rebound.
When Cramer asked Peter van Stolk to account for Jone's great quarter, van Stolk credited his team's hard work, strong sales and the introduction of the 12 ounce can; "I think the conversion to pure cane sugar is what's really taken it by the storm." Van Stolk said another advantage is "I can put [a photo] of your loved ones on a bottle of Jones Soda." Competitors Coca-Cola and Pepsi lack the patent.

Jones Soda Shares Rise As Company Launches Pure Cane Sugar Soda, Hires Executive
NEW YORK (AP) -- Jones Soda Co. shares soared Monday after the premium soft drink company announced a new hire and the official launch its pure cane sugar soda in bottles.
Jones Soda previously said it would change over all its soda to be sweetened with pure cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup, the sweetener Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. use in their carbonated soft drinks.
The company also recently announced it had received commitments from major retailers like Wal-Mart and Safeway to sell its new 12-ounce cans of sugar-sweetened soda. The commitments were part of a new distribution deal with National Beverage Corp.
The commitments from the retailers have helped the stock to surge about 48 percent since the retailers' names were announced March 8.
Monday's launch helped move the shares up another $1.82, or 9 percent, to $22.04 in heavy midday trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
The company also announced the hiring of Peter Burns as senior vice president of sales and marketing. Burns previously worked in a similar position at Izze Beverage Co., a private premium soda company that was acquired by PepsiCo in September. At Izze, Burns helped push sales to $20 million in less than two years, Jones Soda said.
Stifel Nicolaus & co. analyst Mark Swartzberg said the Burns hire will help move Jones Soda into its next phase.
"We believe that Mr. Burns' experience with Izze Beverage Company, a fast-growing, premium beverage company, will benefit Jones Soda as the company builds upon its sales and distribution capabilities," he wrote in a note to investors.
A little sizzle with your fizzle....... ;D
This small company is starting to get wider distribution.
They will grow as a result and get even more distribution.

One of the smallest companies in the bottled beverage business was one of the biggest winners on Wall Street Monday.
Jones Soda announced on Monday a new 12 ounce bottled soda sweetened with pure cane sugar. The company reaffirmed its goal to convert the sweetener in all of its products to pure cane sugar from high fructose corn syrup.
The company also announced on Monday the appointment of Peter Burns, who comes from the Izze Beverage, as the new senior executive vice president of sales and marketing.

The next Coke of the 21st century!!
www.beanie11111.blogspot.com
---
- Piper Jaffray is increasing their tgt on Jones Soda (NASDAQ:JSDA) to $31 from $18 saying margin expansion is driving the model as the company potentially achieves 30% ACV in FY07 and 50% in FY08 of its premium private label brand. Firm believes that the initial pipeline fill is shipping and being shelved (targeted goal of Memorial Day) as expected.
The potential 2H07 "risk" remains as a sell-through period versus the 1H07 channel fill, which may be offset by marketing initiatives. The company continues to invest in human capital, most recently hiring Mr. Peter Burns as SVP of Sales/Marketing.
Piper expects Jones Soda to also invest in its brand through product line launches or extensions, over time.
They are maintaining their FY07 EPS estimate of $0.21. They are also increasing their FY08 EPS estimate by $0.10 to $0.45 based on total revenue growth of 40.8% to $69.4 million versus $63.0 million prior (and conservatively flat gross margin). Reiterates Outperform.
In the tradition of their "Turkey and Giblets" flavored soda for Thanksgiving, they had a big hit when they offered "Matzo and Brisket" flavored soda for Passover!
This stock is more HANS than Coke. Coke is a monster and besides , the facination in this company is its small size and potential - based on its clever marketing and innovative flavors.
A small company is adaptable to the market and can try many new things - like putting photos of drinkers on the bottles (the series of potential father's of Anna Nicole Smith's baby sounds like a winner) and using pure sugar are the type of ideas that attract attention from Wall St. and are hip (at least until I found out).
With rising corn prices, it may be economical now for a small co to look into sugar instead of corn syrup, but for Coke, it would have a massive impact on the markets (sugar tariffs make it prohibitively expensive to import enough - and we grow corn, not sugar).
The company looks like it is sticking to its plan. Gee - I once owned this co at $2 and sold it at $3 - thought I was a genius. I also think I owned it at $8 and sold it at $5, but I forgot to tell my wife about that time.
In the meantime, the chart and the mo look like they will elevate this company further - and btw, if you are waiting for a base or a pullback, there were not too many on the HANS rocket.
This is no Coke - and hopefully not a Bravo either, but it looks like it is good for a few more points.

Jones Soda Tries To Go Mainstream With Its Boutique Soft Drinks
Wednesday April 11, 7:00 pm ET
Marilyn Alva
It took pride in being "the little guy," but now Jones Soda aims to go up against the big soft-drink guys.
Jones-branded canned carbonated drinks are now being placed on store shelves of 25 major retail chains, including Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT - News) supercenters, Safeway (NYSE:SWY - News), Kroger (NYSE:KR - News), Kmart, a unit of Sears Holdings (NasdaqGS:SHLD - News), Costco (NasdaqGS:COST - News) in Southern California and Albertsons' Intermountain, Florida and Denver divisions.
It's a major shift meant to put the $40 million drink firm into a much larger market. From the $500 million premium beverage category, it'll now play in the $66 billion soft-drink market.
Until its recent initiative, Jones Soda (NasdaqCM:JSDA - News) had specialized mostly in premium, bottled carbonated soft drinks with different flavors and unique labels.
Jones supplied Target (NYSE:TGT - News) with canned sodas in an exclusive two-year deal that ended in December. Target will still buy the canned sodas, along with other retailers.
Potential
"Simply by placing the product where more people shop, it will dramatically expand the distribution and sales potential," said James Maher, analyst with ThinkEquity Partners.
Target accounts for about 2% of U.S. soda volume in the U.S. But the 25 retailers Jones signed up account for 25% of the soda market.
By selling only the concentrate, which is relatively cheap to make and comes with higher margins, more dollars will likely pour down to the bottom line.
Analysts polled by Thomson Financial estimate Jones' earnings will jump 69% this year to 22 cents a share and move up another 77% the next year.
Maher figures that concentrate sales to National Beverage Corp. (AMEX:FIZ - News) will over time make up more than half of the company's case sales.
National Beverage has agreed to produce and distribute more than 35 million cases a year of Jones' canned sodas for the U.S. market.
Jones already got a boost from early concentrate shipments to National Beverage in the fourth quarter, when margins jumped to 47.4% from 36.6% the year earlier. Net income rose 256% to $2.1 million, while per-share earnings grew 167% to 8 cents a share.
Case sales in 2006 about doubled from 2005 due in part to concentrate sales in the fourth quarter. Revenue for the full year rose 16.5% to $39 million.
Jones' share price bolted March 9 after the company disclosed the names of the 25 new retailers signed on for its new canned sodas.
Those retailers are expected to have the sodas on store shelves by Memorial Day.
The new canned soda line goes by the name Jones Pure Cane Soda to stress that the drinks are sweetened with pure cane sugar rather than the high fructose corn syrup used in most other soft drinks.
Chief Executive Peter Van Stolk told analysts in a conference call that the use of pure cane sugar -- which is perceived by some consumers as a tad better than high fructose corn syrup -- will help Jones "stand out from the other players in this space." He was unavailable for comment.
At the same time, Jones plans to sweeten all its bottled soft drinks with cane sugar. But the cane sugar might not be a point 15f distinction for too long.
"There are a number of companies now experimenting or beginning to use pure-cane sugar," said John Sicher, editor and publisher of Beverage Digest.
He says Cadbury-Schweppes (NYSE:CSG - News) just began a test in the Midwest using cane sugar in Dr Pepper. And he notes that PepsiCo (NYSE:PEP - News) plans to introduce a "Pepsi Natural" version later this year using cane sugar.
"Companies are always looking for ways to differentiate their products and attract new consumer attention," Sicher said.
The canned sodas come in various flavors such as green apple and lemon drop. "Their flavors are different, so they have a good opportunity to compete with the other colas," Maher said.
Still, it's too early to draw conclusions since the rollout is not yet complete. "That's the piece of the puzzle that has yet to be demonstrated," Maher said.
To help get the word out, Jones is launching its first TV ad campaign this spring, touting its "better soda."
The company has no intention of phasing out its hallmark long-neck glass bottles, which feature photo labels submitted by customers. But it recently expanded into plastic bottles with a noncarbonated multivitamin enhanced drink called 24C. A broad launch is set for the second quarter.
Mainstream
"There's no doubt Jones is becoming mainstream, but in a premium sense," said Piper Jaffray analyst Nicole Miller. While the new canned soda program is a big deal for Jones, it's not "the end game," she says.
"The reason this model works is because it's a portfolio of branded products. We expect product extensions and new product launches over time," Miller said.
Jones Soda's drink portfolio also includes organic teas, natural juices and a Whoop Ass-branded energy drink. The firm licenses its name for a line of hard candies sold by Big Sky Brands.

$$ Jones Soda Still Has Fizz.......
Jones Soda won't quit. Why should it? One of the big knocks against the company is that carbonation, as a category, is awful and no company in the category can buck it. But this week we have analysts talking about how carbonated beverages could be getting some life. If that's the case, you could have Jones going up off the category growth or from the possibility that the larger soda companies want to bulk up and add more product lines (don't forget private equity and Cott are talking about buying Cadbury's beverages. This group is hot.) All of this works because Jones has just gone with the business model -- sell the syrup nationally in unusual venues rather than bottle for Target only -- and the margins could explode. This is a stock that will remain in the news positively until it becomes a billion-dollar company too big to acquire.

CHICAGO, Apr 10, 2007 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Zacks.com announces the latest list of top performing Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks. The stocks on the prestigious list with the highest returns last week were Jones Soda Co. (JSDA), U.S. Physical Therapy, Inc. (USPH), Acorda Therapeutics, Inc. (ACOR), Crocs, Inc. (CROX) and DryShips Inc. (DRYS). Each of these stocks easily outperformed the S&P 500.
Stocks ranked #1 (Strong Buy) by Zacks have produced an average annual return of +31.8% since inception in 1988. During the 2000-2002 bear market, Zacks #1 Rank stocks gained 43.8% while the S&P 500 tumbled 37.6%. To learn more about the Zacks Rank, go to http://at.zacks.com/?id=3172.
Here is a synopsis of the last week's best performing Zacks #1 Rank stocks.
Jones Soda Co. (JSDA) led all other Zacks #1 Rank companies last week with a gain of 26.3%. On Apr 2, shares for the premium soda company jumped after launching its 12 ounce bottled soda sweetened with pure cane sugar. The company believes that the transition to pure cane sugar will further solidify its leadership position as a result of the better taste, enhanced health benefits and positive perception of the new beverage line.
Jones Soda has displayed positive momentum of late. The company was featured as a top-performing Zacks #1 Rank company on Mar 16 as well, after reporting a 700% positive earnings surprise in its fourth quarter. In addition, revenue during the period advanced 15%. Earnings estimates for this year are now at 19 cents, up 46.1% from 13 cents 30 days ago.
U.S. Physical Therapy, Inc. (USPH) is a national operator of physical and occupational therapy outpatient clinics, which gained 12.14% last week. The earnings estimate for this year from the one analyst covering this company has improved six cents, or approximately 8.6%, over the past month.
Last month, U.S. Physical Therapy announced fourth-quarter earnings, after discontinued operations, of 18 cents per share, compared to 14 cents a year earlier. Revenue improved to $33.9 million from $32.3 million, thanks to a 5.7% increase in patient visits and an advance of 19 cents in average net patient revenue per visit to $96.09.
Acorda Therapeutics, Inc. (ACOR) is still expected to post a loss for this year, but the expectation has narrowed by 10 cents over the past two months to a loss of $1.28. The biotechnology company gained 10.4% last week to become one of the top-performing Zacks #1 Rank companies. In its fourth-quarter report from late February, Acordia Therapeutics announced a loss of 30 cents per share, marking a significant narrowing from the previous year's loss of approximately $75. The result also bettered the consensus by almost 12%.
Shares of Crocs, Inc. (CROX) advanced 9.55% last week, making the innovative footwear retailer one of the top-performing Zacks #1 Rank companies. Earnings estimates for this year increased 15% over the past two months to $2.39 from $2.07.
The company made big news in late February with a strong fourth-quarter performance. Earnings per share of 51 cents surged year over year from 12 cents, and also topped the consensus by approximately 18.6%. Revenues jumped 236% to $112.9 million from $33.6 million in the fourth-quarter of 2005. For the full year, EPS and revenues advanced 215.7% and 226.6% respectively. Crocs also raised its fiscal 2007 EPS and revenue growth targets. The company has come back to earth from its all-time high in early February, but its performance last week suggests that the retailer's future remains bright.
DryShips Inc. (DRYS), an international provider of drybulk carriers, announced on Apr 4 its eighth consecutive quarterly cash dividend of 20 cents per share since its listing on the NASDAQ Global Market in February 2005. In late March, the company continued with its strategy of fleet expansion and renewal. Through the purchase of two vessels and the disposal of another pair, the company will have a fleet of 34 vessels with an average of 9.3 years, which is well below the industry average of 12.6 years.
In its fourth quarter, DryShips announced earnings per share, excluding a gain, of 77 cents, which bettered the consensus by approximately 2.7%. Revenue also improved on a year-over-year basis. Shares for this Zacks #1 Rank company advanced 8.34% last week. Earnings estimates for this year are up 8.2% over the past two months, including an advance of 2.5% in the past 30 trading days.

Shares of Premium Soda Makers Climb on Consolidation Speculation
NEW YORK (AP) -- Speculation on possible consolidation in the beverage industry helped shares of premium soda makers climb Monday.
The stocks began their climb Friday after private-label soda maker Cott Corp. confirmed it was considering a merger with the beverage arm of Cadbury Schweppes PLC. Cadbury has said it plans to break apart its beverage business from its core confectionary division.
Here is how some key beverage stocks did on Monday:
Natural Beverage Corp., up 43 cents, or 2.5 percent, to $17.57
Cott Corp., up 83 cents, or 5.2 percent, to $16.93
Jones Soda Co., up $3.32, or 11.8 percent, to $31.54
Cadbury Schweppes PLC, up 44 cents to $54.49
Hansen Natural Corp., down 55 cents to $38.04
Okay a nice rally in JSDA - At what point to we flip position and short/put JSDA?
My thoughts:
Cramer calls for a fair valuation on JSDA of 1 billion (market cap)
Current Market Cap - 809 million
Target Market Cap - 1 billion
=191 million or another 19% more up from here
1.19 (% increase expected - 19%) x $31.50 (current price)
= A target share price of 37.50
Being the fact that this stock has a large short position and momentum I would say this could go to 39-40 in a heartbeat...before being sold for profits.
We have to remember folks that this is a soda/drink company with a P/E of 170!
What do you guys think JSDA will top out at?
This sure looks like a blowoff top to me, as in "short squeeze". The chart has gone parabolic and no matter how strong the stock, it cannot be sustained. Having said that, these things can go on for much longer than expected. Sometimes short sellers can be a stock's best friend as they keep trying to call the top while the stock continues to move upward, exceeding their pain threshold, forcing them to cover their shorts and propelling the stock higher.
Cramer isn't helping by hysterically hyping this stock but there's nothing we can do about that. I wouldn't be surprised if he's reducing his position by selling into the rally. I wish I had a TV show where I could also do the old "pump n dump".......
As I stated in my first post, JSDA has a Good product...Small company
Long term nice hold !!!
Shorts may suffer a thrashing.......and most likely have so.

Jones Soda Shares Rise on Seahawks Deal
Wednesday May 23, 11:49 am ET
Jones Soda Shares Climb on Seattle Seahawks Exclusive Sponsorship Agreement
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Jones Soda Co. climbed Wednesday after the premium soda maker said it signed an exclusive sponsorship agreement with the Seattle Seahawks National Football League team.
In a regulatory filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Jones said it entered into the agreement Tuesday with Football Northwest LLC and First & Goal Inc., the owners and operators of the Seahawks.
Under the agreement, Jones will be a sponsor of the team, which means the company can use the team's trademark on its products. Also, Jones now has exclusive soft-drink and non-alcoholic beverage availability rights at the team's stadium, Qwest Field and Events Center.
The agreement begins July 1 and ends Feb. 28, 2012.
Jones, which is headquartered in Seattle, has garnered national attention in recent months for switching its sweetener to pure cane sugar from high fructose corn syrup. The company also recently signed deals with several major retailers, including Wal-Mart Stores Inc., to offer its new 12-ounce cans through its distribution agreement with National Beverage Corp.
Since the company announced earlier this year its list of new retailers, shares had consistently hit new highs. But earlier this month, the company suffered a setback when its first quarter profit failed to meet Wall Street's expectations due to costs associated with its expansion plans.
Shares have fallen 21 percent since then.
On Wednesday, the shares gained a bit back, rising 98 cents, or 4.9 percent, to $20.97 in midday trading.
A matter of interpretation.......JMHO of course...
I see this as a buy opportunity. Their expenses went up because of the huge expansion which will ultimately lead to huge earnings. If you are not in...I would venture to get in now.
I Don't anticipate it to go down any further.

Jones Soda Shares Rise on Upgrade

Jones Soda Shares Climb After ThinkEquity Partners Analyst Upgrade
NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of premium soda maker Jones Soda Co. rose Monday after a ThinkEquity Partners analyst upgraded his rating on the stock, saying the recent drop in the share price has created a buying opportunity for investors.
Analyst James Maher raised his rating to "Buy" from "Accumulate," saying last week's announcement by coffee chain Starbucks Corp. that it would stop selling the company's drinks has turned the stock into a good deal.
The stock price has dropped nearly 10 percent since Starbucks made the announcement Wednesday, leading Maher to say investors may be overreacting.
"We believe the loss of Starbucks as a distributor is not as negative as it may appear," the analyst said in a client note. "Those stores offering Jones Soda typically carried only two or three flavors and, we think, did not sell high in volumes as most customers came to Starbucks for coffee, not soda."
Starbucks, which has been selling Jones Soda bottles since 2004, said it would discontinue the product in its company-owned U.S. stores to make room for more sandwiches and food products.
Jones Soda has said the Starbucks sales are now less than 1 percent of the company's total revenue since it began distributing its sodas in cans for the first time to a much larger number of retailers, including Wal-Mart, Safeway and Albertson's, earlier this year.
"We believe the very small share of revenue Starbucks represented can be replaced by higher-margin sales, such as cans or fountain drinks," Maher said.
Maher said the Seattle-based company's deal to be the exclusive premier branded soft drink at Qwest Field -- the home of National Football League team the Seattle Seahawks -- will give the company more exposure and add to sales.
Jones Soda shares rose 41 cents, or 2.8 percent, to $15.25 in midday trading.

Ok, I'm out at 17.52. I'll take my 23% gain in a little over a week, it probably goes higher still but this stock has a history of 3 bullish days followed by a sell off. Good Luck.
I think JSDA is going to run again on the upside. It seems like the 50SMA moving average is supporting the price in the weekly chart, like it did in the past.

Below are the 6 month and 3 year charts.......
The Next Big Beverage Stock?
Jones Soda (Nasdaq: JSDA) has been quite a ride over the past 24 months. And while the stock has fallen recently, CEO Peter van Stolk believes that the company's increased distribution presence means the company is positioned better now than ever before.
When I talked to van Stolk last week, he told me why Jones is ready to step up in the marketplace and ramp up its marketing. Here are some excerpts from our conversation:
Tim Hanson: One thing that has really been interesting in the beverage space, from my perspective, is the difficulty giants like Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) and Pepsico (NYSE: PEP) have had coming up with innovative products to spur growth. We saw Glaceau taken out at a big premium. Hansen Natural (Nasdaq: HANS) has been a big story the last couple of years. Jones stock has been successful. What is going on in the development cycle at the big companies that give small operators like you such a big opportunity?
Peter van Stolk: Well I think there is, first of all, there are a lot of things going on, and as a smaller company, like most of these small companies that you follow, we have the ability to react to consumer trends on a fairly quick basis. ... [Small companies like Jones] can bring in new items and new products that react to the consumers' trends, and we are not trying to stay just to the party line that says, "This brand isn't right for the future." As things change, consumers' tastes change.
Hanson: Is the variety of flavors that Jones has a real advantage in terms of creating a big brand?
van Stolk: You can say what I think, but you can also look at Snapple. You don't have to look at me. You can look at Snapple. You can look at Arizona Iced Tea. You can look at Glaceau, which sold for $4.2 billion; they have 24 SKUs. It has nothing to do with Jones sort of making, defending, or discussing it; it is a reality of [how] to get to be a big player, because you have to have a share of mind.
Now this share of mind is three people [for whom] you have to have share of mind [to] be successful in the beverage industry. First is obviously the distributor in the DSD [direct store delivery] network; second is the retailer; and the third is the consumer. Those are the share of mind.
So how do you build share of mind? [First,] you build it by creating ... enough product distributors that they have the auctions that sell to different retailers. Two, you have enough product on the shelf, the holding power, so you can actually be seen when a consumer walks down the shelf, because of the competition that you are fighting for within the category. And third, the consumer has to be able to see, "Oh, that is the Jones set." They may pick the green apple, they may pick the cream soda, and they may pick the sugar-free black cherry. I really don't care, but I need to hold that space.
Hanson: Now, in terms of sort of building out the distribution, you lost the deal with Starbucks (Nasdaq: SBUX), but I have seen you popping up at Panera (Nasdaq: PNRA), and you got the deal at the stadium out there in Seattle. Is there more of that premium retailer stuff in the pipeline, or what about places like Whole Foods (Nasdaq: WFMI), or even liquor stores?
van Stolk: [It] is all relevant to how big you are. So that thing, we have been in Panera for a long time. I think one of the things that we are very comfortable about with Jones is that we are geared up right now to [expand our] premium retailers and ... food service accounts. [Regarding the Seahawks:] ... One of the things that we wanted to do, and the reason why we went into the Seahawks, is very important for you to understand. It is the first time we have a premium, pure-can soda on fountain. So if we are going to expand our distribution in what is called premium food service, or QSRs [quick-serve restaurants], it is an important part of our component to have a fountain piece.
Hanson: Sure.
van Stolk: We are not talking about going to 7-Eleven, or not going to the Big Gulps and getting that stuff. We are talking about a premium QSR, which is the ideal fit in place. So what we wanted to do is by going into the Seahawk stadium, you have 67,000 people in there on a weekend, and how does Jones soda perform in that type of forum? So it is a closed test environment where we can test our ability to provide fountains. We can test our ability to deliver to the QSR, [which] is our goal.
We want it to be really important for us, so that is where we are looking at. We are expanding our distribution in these restaurants, Ruby Tuesday [and] Panera. We are in Barnes & Noble. We are in tons and tons of places, so Starbucks is a great account and you may be surprised to see [energy drink and Jones acquisition] 24C in Starbucks in Canada, so that is reality, you know?
Hanson: Now those QSRs, those are all bottles, correct? Not fountain yet.
van Stolk: That is correct, it is all bottles. That is one of the things, if you can offer a program to a retailer, right? Then again it comes back to this whole conversation about SKUs, and that is why I am so adamant that ... as yet, it maybe looks great for you or for whomever is talking about it, but it doesn't look great for a retailer, because a retailer wants to have one customer that is providing him, because let's just think of this [in terms of] common sense.
I am just going to talk common sense for two seconds. You own a restaurant ... the more checks you are writing to different vendors costs you more money. That is a reality. So if you as a QSR restaurant, with 40 or 50 or 100 accounts, can be serviced by one beverage company, your costs are cheaper, you are better [in] negotiations, you have a whole bunch of advantages, better distribution, better freight, better all the things that nobody looks at from the front page. All the things that are really important to the customer. Those things are what we have to do.
So if you think that a retailer is going to love to sell one product from here, one SKU from there, one SKU from there, one SKU from there, think about how many checks they are writing to different players. So when you can come in and sort of provide a retailer with all their requirements, you have a competitive advantage.
Hanson: Yeah, so you can act big, kind of.
van Stolk: Right ... So if you look at Panera, let's take Panera. They have our bottles, they have our organic teas, and they have our naturals. Now, if they didn't have our teas, they would have somebody else's teas, and so right there is a pure example of Jones saying, "We want to be a player with Panera. We want to meet their requirements, and we are going to listen to them, and we are not going to just sell them one flavor of soda and say how great our SKUs are in one SKU."
Hanson: Now speaking of different tastes, Jones is sort of notorious for coming out with some wacky flavors. I know before I came in here, my colleagues wanted to make sure you were going to bring back the turkey soda.
van Stolk: This year is going to be better.
Hanson: Better?
van Stolk: Better; I will say it right now. This year we are doing something different we have never done. We wanted to show that we could think outside the box and prove to you and some other people that we just don't rest on our laurels with turkeys, so turkey is off the table this year, and we are doing something completely different for everybody this year. I am sure that when you get it, you will enjoy the humor on it, and you will also enjoy where the [proceeds to] charities go, and hopefully we can continue to provide resources for Toys for Tots ... because that is important.
Hanson: The last earnings report from Jones disappointed the market a little bit. Just for people who maybe own the stock or who are thinking about buying the stock, what are some key indicators that you look at, or things that the company measures, that can give outside shareholders some perspective on whether things are improving? What are you looking at to tell you that the business is working?
van Stolk: I think first and foremost ... what I am looking at is different than what anybody else is looking at. I am looking at that Dec. 31 of 2006. We were in 1,400 stores with cans, right? That is a reality. Now we are in over 15,700 stores. We have done that in a relatively short period of time, and we have done that in a relatively low cost to our shareholders. So I don't know; that is what I have, because if I don't get into the stores, I can't sell.
So there is no magic to this conversation. No CEO should say there is magic to it. ... [You] first have to get into the stores, how much did you spend to get in those stores? If you look at, in some cases, how much did we spend to market? So if you look at Jones Soda from my perspective, I [see] that I have achieved distribution with our cans within 25%-plus on the [all commodity volume]. I have not spent a lot of money doing it, because you can see that. ... The balance sheet is strong, and now that I am on the shelves, I can market [what] allows us to do the next [step].
The silliest thing that people do, in my opinion ... is they market before the product is on the shelf. It feels good and everybody gets excited, so I do a marketing campaign before I am on the shelf. I spend a lot of money, get people all buzzed about it, and then consumers go to find it, and they can't see it. And then I don't have any revenues to justify doing it again, and I look like a complete moron. That is real.
... [So] this year we had some hurdles and challenges and hiccups getting on the shelves within the premium selling season of the summer months. I understand that, and that has punched me in the stomach, and I feel that is not cool. I am not happy about it, but we are working hard on it. But we didn't blow our investment to do that. So we didn't spend all the money, if you look at our balance sheet, we didn't spend. We lowered our investment spending to get on the shelves, so our investment spending to get on [shelves was] some of the lowest in the industry.
So what people like about Jones is hey, we got on the shelf. We now have an opportunity to really move forward. I am disappointed that we didn't get on the shelf earlier. Some of those decisions I cannot control [such as] when the retailer is set. I wish we would have had more people set up earlier to do the open. I can't take that back, but we are now feeling comfortable where we are going.
