hey folks,
whoz into soccer here? man, i just saw one of the the most exciting matches of the world cup just now...
Ghana beat Czech Republic 2 - 0 !! What an upset that was...gives USA a chance at going into the 2nd round even if they end up losing to Italy.
Oh by the way...
Elite G - congrats on your home country going into the 2nd round!!! Way to go!
this is just the beginning...I'll be positing more on this topic as the games progress.
Something to cheer about during the bad markets the last few weeks!
Beckham & Co.
Go! Go! Go!
Hey Vic...count me on for futbol.......
What an upset that was. That gives the USA a huge chance at qualifiying for the next stage.
Did you watch Argentina yesterday? That was a good game too with lots of goals and excellent plays.
forza italia! forza azzura!!

come on aussie , come on

bocasva..
was at work during live telcast of the Argentina match...but yes, I caught it on the recording at 5.00 pm...Argentina was a blast. but I don;t think Serbia was a great team yesterday, they pretty much gave in after the first 2 goals. and towards the end of the game...those goals were like giveaways...i mean, serbia was a bunch of dead-men walking on the field towards the end.
i'd like to see the
Argentinia - Nederlands game this week. that should be a ripper! ;)

There's no way Brazil can win the world cup with Ronaldo and Adriano on top. I've never seen players in this level so out of form. Ok both played better today than against Croatia and Adriano scored a goal but Brazil is much better with Fred and Robinho as forwards. They have the best player in the world with the best passing feet but Ronaldinho looks ordinary with these two players just standing still. Robinho at least runs like crazy like a maniac all over the pitch. This gives Kaka and Ronaldinho all the opportunities to do magic.
There's a lot of hype surrounding the team but they're NOT that good with Ronaldo and Adriano. Hope Perreira would realize that.
agreed....here's my take on what Perreira might do. Now that Brazil is a confirmed go for the 2nd round, Perreira is gonna give Ronaldo another shot as a starter against Japan...and he fails then again, Robinho will start in the 2nd round, in place of Ronaldo.
I'd disagree on Adriano, he's shown some deft moves and he definitely knows how to control the ball and keep it in possession.
Don't know much about Fred, although the goal he scored today was really a team effort and didn't really show any particular skills of his.
and yes, Ronaldinho is as dead as a camel in Times Square...all that hype has only put more pressure on everybody...but again, they aren;t new to the hype/pressure/build-up.
I'd still place my bets on Brazil to win the World Cup. ;)
I may be cheering also for Engand but I placed my money on Brazil so I want Brazil to win.
Adriano isn't himself the last six months for Inter. Fred on the other hand is topscorer in
Lyon and number two behind Pauleta in the French League. He just move better than
Ronaldo and Adriano at the moment.
Brazil's second goal is Fred's making. He first turned around from a defender and tried to free
Kaka but when it failed he gave a perfect pass to Robinho. Then he ran in front of the goal
and scored when Robinho's shot rebounded from the post.
Brazil is through so they have a lot of time to improve themselves.
Good thread!
Man that USA/Italy game made me so upset.. the referee was so horrible it is like the game didn't even happen! The coach for USA, Bruce Arena, needed to get off his ass and get thrown out of the game to charge the team up... terrible. I think the US looked better than Italy.. and I dont think that's saying much.
I'm excited about Ghana.. man if they can play like that Thursday against the US it could be a great game. They looked awesome against Czech Rep. South Korea/Switzerland could be good.. also Germany/Ecuador and of course like Vic mentioned Argentina/Netherlands.
Brazil seems to be able to play ok and still win games.. I think they are at a different level and will turn it on when challenged.
Lets see whats tomorrow.. hmm boring matches
Tuesday looks nice ;)

you already saw, for eighths and quarters.

That's a nice plan, unfortunately the host nation team is playing it's last match Saturday!
If Argentina makes it to the quarter it'll be against another team - Guess who! >:D >:D >:D >:D >:D
dang, dang, dang! was at the NPE 2006 plastics expo in Chicago the last 3 days...missed every match...all I could manage was a sneak at the Germany Ecquador match at "Bayer's" booth...(of course, the Germans!! ;D)
anyway...came a few minutes back and missed the ARG-NED game too...gotta watch the remtach...a 0 - 0 draw?? hmm..some players were rested, but still, that must have been interesting?
glad to see the board kicking while I was gone...as they say, FUSBOL is a beast of it's own.

Hey Vic.. just so you know it is Ramsburg that is Portuguese.. I'm Israeli and have lived in America since I was 4... and I strongly believe that Argentina should be playing some of their bench: http://argentina.worldcupblog.org/1/who-can-beat-us.html
GO USA! 8)
Thanks for the support, Oliver, hope we can do manage without it on Saturday ;) . Nice pic on Mellberg :D
Hey fellows:
We are reserving the players shown in Elite G's picture only for semifinals
and after hours celebration.

Fantastic game Brazil-Japan.
Wild open. 1-1 after the first half.
This is the first time another team scored against Brazil in several matches.
Good. It should wake them up and bring them back to earth.
Or else Germany could demolish them.
And... I lose a thousand bucks.
I'm happy I was wrong about Ronaldo. He's doing great.

thanks for clarifying...my bad!
anyway, the experts are picking Portugal to win against Nederlands this weekend....very interesting.
okay...time for updates:
Today's matches:
1.) Germany is winning against Sweden with less than 10 minutes to go. Congrats La-onda! :)
2.) Argentina is very likely gonna win against Mexico this afternoon
So...Germany vs. Argentina that's gonna be a ripper!!! very very tough to pick. gotta see how Argentian plays this afternoon. The two German forwards Klose and Podolski are clicking so nicely, but the German defense hasn't been tested as much as I'd like to have seen....lots of that will happen in the game against Argentina 8)
Tomorrows' matches :
1.) England vs. Ecquador - I think the Brits will sneak through...they definitely have a lot to prove..but let's see how Owen and Rooney clcik together tomorrow.
2.) Portugal vs. Nederlands - I think I'll pick the Dutch, i think they are better overall with a solid defense to hold off Portugal
So that'll leave us with England vs. Nederlands in the round of 8...and for that, I'll definitely pick Nederlands.
Anyway...can't wait for the game this afternoon.
Happy "soccering" everyone!
nice game ;)
I was impressed by Mexico.. they gave a great game before losing in extra time.
Argentina vs. Germany.. now that is going to be a nice soccer game... Have to give the edge to Germany for homefield and the ease of their last victory.. but if Messi starts for Argentina it evens the odds.
England vs. Ecquador.. man England could shine if their talent comes through.. Gerard, Lampart, Rooney.. this will be a test if they can handle the South American style game.
Portugal vs. Netherlands.. ooh tough call, if Portugal can score early it will be their game they have some stars.
futbol! :o
Well since my daughter has duel citizenship,
Brazilian/American
That makes her a Brazacana..... ;D :D ;)
I will have to pull for her Home Country.......Brazil !

Take a look at some of the Beauty there..... ;D ;)
As I said in message #16 Germany vs. Argentina passed to quarters.
It's going to be a challenge for different football schools (speed vs.
individuall skill).
Ecuador, Brazil and Portugal are going to be outstanding candidates for quarters
Good luck to all

so, about today;s games...man was that Argentina/Mexico game a thriller...no way I though Mexico would challenge Argentinians that much, they deserved to be in the round of 8 - it;s a shame that they have gone thru' this 4 world cups in a row - knocked out in round of 16, really hearbreaking for our southern neighbors.
I'm glad the golden goal rule was squashed for this world cup, I hated that rule and the new one (30 min. extra playing time before going to penalty kicks) is a lot fairer on teams that bust their asses for 90 min. non stop.
tomorrow's games will be excellente, to say the least..let's see who wins them - I'd place my bets on England and Nederlands.
happy
Fusballing! ;)
I, too, am glad Golden Goal was scratched in these games.
Sad that Owen is out for the rest of the World Cup. I like to see the best players in this championship no matter which country they play but unfortunately injuries couldn't be avoided.
I once travelled to London just to see a soccer match yeeeeears ago so there's no question I'll be rooting for England.
Portugal - Netherlands should be a great match. Two of the best wingers you can find. Ronaldo is always very pleasant to the eye everytime he has the ball, a dribbling phenomena. Robben, on the other hand, creates a lot of chances because of his speed and must be the most important player for the Dutch. So watch for these two exciting players! I give the + sign to Portugal though because I have a feeling Deco would dominate the midfield.
For the record:
Since after Brazil won in Sweden in 1958 it had been a European country that lifted the trophy everytime the World Cup was held in europe. So there's a pattern in there. Just like in the stock market. But again who wins in the stock market?
Go England!
Go Brazil!
the winners so far: ;D ;D
Go Portugal GO ;)
yes; Portugal has won ;D
nice English team :-X
Vomit for your country :o Beckham is a HERO ;)
Pity for Ramsburg and Randolph that Portugal will be beaten by England in the quarter finals >:D >:D
Ok, I am Aussietrader, but I am English by birth, Oh yeh Australia may even beat Italy tonight ;)

Grrrrrrr, Bloody referee. Was he Italian :o :o :o
The referee was Medina Cantalejo (Spain), a real pain in the neck.
This is not the first time Italy is "helped" by referees.
These guys will probably go to semifinals.

Referees always favor the big soccer nations.
What happened today was very unfair.
Today's Swiss/Ucr match was the worst of this World Cup. :'( :-[
Another gift for ITALY. :o

Go Brazil ! ;)
Brazil 3 Ghana 0...... ;D
Tuesday, 27 June : After beating Ghana 3-0, Brazil presses forward to the quarter-finals. Although they won convincingly, the highlight of the match was Ronaldo's opening goal that earned him a place in World Cup history.
In a much anticipated match, Ghana, the lone African nation in the Round of 16, had the worst start possible when Brazil took the lead in the opening minutes. In the 5th minute, Ronaldo's sublime strike was met with euphoria, as not only did it put Brazil ahead, but it was his 15th goal in the FIFA World Cup, making him the highest scorer ever in the history of the tournament – an honor that was held up to this point by German striker, Gerd Muller.
After the euphoria of the 5th minute goal subsided, Ghana stepped up their game, pressing forward aggressively. However, once again, Ghana was caught flat-footed in the back and could only watch in horror as Adriano broke free to challenge Kingston. Save for Adriano's deliberate dive in the box, under a challenge from the keeper, Ghana would have found themselves down 2-0 in the first 13 minutes of the match.
Unfortunately Ghana's reprieve did not last long, as before the final whistle in the first-half they were caught on the offside trap, yet again, and this time there was no hesitation on Adriano's part as he delivered the ball into the net.
Down 2-0 at the beginning of the second half, Ghana had little hope left. They were out-classed and out-played by the defending World Cup champions. Brazil was relentless, and in the 84th minute Ricardinho sailed a clever pass over Ghana's once again flat-footed backline to find Ze Roberto who was more than ready to neatly tuck the ball into the net.
In conclusion, Ghana's fate was sealed in the opening minutes of the match. After Ronaldo recorded his historical 15th FIFA World Cup goal, Ghana fell apart, never quite recovering from the shock. Nevertheless, for their first ever World Cup appearance, they surpassed expectations and for that they can be proud.
such a sick goal argentina had on win against mexico
i love this game
Brazil= the best soccer dynasty of our time,
best club we may ever see in our lifetime ;D
ARGENTINA ARGENTINA ARGENTINA
What a match tomorrow!
11amEST Germany vs. Argentina
Forget trading! :o
Go Brazil !!!!!!! ;)
>:D >:D >:D
The England dream team :o
(Go Portugal!!!)
>:D >:D >:D
why didn´t Messi play??
That was my question! Why didn't Messi play? Argentina coach made a huge mistake... Germany should make it to the finals now.. it was a great game.. but why no Messi? I want to see stars like that play!
The argentine coach perhaps made some tactical mistakes according to people
that were impressed by Messi but (in my opinion) he is very young, cannot
stand permanent running and rudeness, fighting against much taller players.
Unfortunately Riquelme was neutralized in the middle field and Cambiasso
did not solve the problem.
Germany played a good second half of the game and the referee was an
unfair judge as was confirmed in several replays that I dont know if everybody
was able to see in the original TV transmission that we saw through the
additional camaras of local channels. :o >:(
Anyway the deficient execution of penalties was unacceptable and all the
previous effort went to the gutter.
Now we will cheer for Brazil. ;)
jorgegr
a perfect weekend ;D
1)
Portugals keeper = awesome
congratulation Frederic!
2)
France much better than Brasil; ZIDANE >:D
cheers Oliver
Brazil knocked out by France >:D :(
Know I pull for Portugal ;D
Leve a xícara ! Boa Sorte... ;)
2 of the 3 teams i was rooting for lost...argentina lost a heartbreaker to germany (if only they did not slack off after their first goal). and today, Brazil played so bad...they were a ghost of a team that I knew about....I thought they were gonna get better with each game in the world cup...the opposite happened, and they "deserved to lose" both for their poor quality of game, and for France's superior play today....not a big fan of France...but kudos to their play.
Finally...am real glad with Portugal...they were solid, and guess what, with Deco playing in the semis. they have a good chance of going all the way. :)
Thanks guys ;)
It was a difficult afternoon here in Portugal.... especially when I have a British girlfriend with me watching the game ;) >:D
England was a hard opponent to beat (just like Euro2004)... it was really unbreakable even with less 1 player (although I believe the red card was fair)...
After the match, the country just went crazy ;) Party everywhere ;)
I was expecting to see Brazil on the semi-finals... but we have a little business to deal with France anyway, maybe its payback time ;)
URRA ! ;)
Congratulations, I also think the red card was right.
The referee which I know very well because he's Argentine, always has been
very strict but also fair and uncorruptible (so far). >:D
Hope your team goes through the next difficult game. Lots of luck
By the way, is CB around?? Hasn't posted since June 22nd.??

Goodbye England.
Goodbye Brazil.
The referee had no choice but to give the red card. Rooney should have held his temper. Poor Ronaldo. He had to come back to Manchester United next season. Guess he had to win the World Cup to dampen the heat against him.
What can i say about Brazil? As I wrote earlier, Fred and Robinho should have started. It was only after Robinho came in near the end that their movement began flowing.
Both my teams lost and it was heartbreaking. But something unimaginable happened at the Tour d' France prologue. Saved my day.
Congratulations for Portugal, Rooney was foolish and that side of his character is a major flaw for such an international player.
You have to know that as soon as it went to penalties I knew England would lose. They always are bad at penalties.
Portugal!!.. now with Deco back and rested.. they could go..all..the...way! :o I am rooting for the only team left without a worldcup trophy and the smallest country left too.
Damn it, Italy do not deserve to be in the final >:( It should be Australia ;) (joke) they must of bribed another referee, Italy domestic game is full of corruption and crime.
COME ON PORTUGAL OR FRANCE
[/b][/color]
unfortunaltely the best game from Italy during World Cup, congratulations
It looked like it would end with penalty kicks for sure. That was a great bender to win it in the last minute. I'm still not converted to being a soccer fan. I hate the way one mistake, one lucky shot, or one bad call by the refs decides so many games. Or that you can run errands for an hour and a half and come back and not have missed anything. Or leave for one minute and miss everything (everything being the one and only goal that gets scored). The thing I love about World Cup are pictures like this one ;) ;D

I always liked Deco since he led Porto to the Champions League triumph 3 years ago. And he was instrumental to Barcelona's success the last couple of years; of course together with Eto'o, Messi and Ronaldinho. He outplayed Zidane during the Barcelona-Real Madrid matches so todays' game should be interesting because Zidane is in top form.
Just like many others here, I'm rooting for Portugal.

Porto ;), I have born there so its my home team ;)
My favourite players are Maniche and Deco, not because they used to play on Porto, but because of their great skils.... the match just started, and so far I'm optimistic... we have a good team, Ricardo has been working great, Ronaldo looks to be in 100% shape, and Figo has some insights about Zidane style ;) So the technical outlook of Portugal is bullish, just ready for a major buy signal ;) >:D (btw, the betting odds are giving 3.75 to Portugal against 2.30 to France... I expect the betting agents to lose a lot of money today ;))
Over and out... ;) 8)
Gee Rams! You're a lucky guy with such a home team.
Deco just came out from injury so he's just doing this one touch football. Anyway he's good at it.
45 minutes to go.
Shocker. Another 1-0 game decided by a lame penalty call. :(
Congrats to France.
well, also on the edge, congrats to France; sorry for Portugal

I don't think Klinsmann (Germany's coach) would mind about Ronaldo's tactics. He was once on the same shoe. In fact he dove in front of Tottenham fans everytime he scored a goal to show his exceptional diving techniques.
It's part of the game. The referee should give them yellow cards.
finally, nice party again in Germany 8)
wow...it's penalty time in the finals....sad to see the champions being decided this way...but oh well! it was one heck of a game...and Zidane...what a disappointment! (especially after that glorious header only to be saved the keeper). he deserved the red card nevertheless.
i have my bets on italy. >:D
:'( as exprected but until the red card, France was the better team
Can't believe what Zidane had done. Of all the great things he had done for football he will be remembered by his last act. His last game and he had to bow out this way.
He was constantly mentioned in the same league as Maradona and Pele. World Champion, European Champion, Champions League winner, three times voted as best player in the world...
Maradona made his "Hand of God" thing and the fans forgave him (unless of course if your British). I hope Zidane will be forgiven.
The referees, at least for once, had the game under control.
Congratulations to Italy.
Good thing none of the French players perpetuated the stereotype that the French are arogant..... and quitters.........
I couldn't imagine what that player said to Zindane to make him behave like that.
"I bet you don't have the balls to head butt me in the chest and get thrown out of the game"?
BTW.....The Italians invented futbol.
The reason the French lost the World Cup of Soccer was because they were waiting for the US to bail them out in overtime.
I just checked my French dictionary, and Zinedine Zidane means 'Bill Buckner' in English' -
Mike Martino, Glen Cove
Of course he was provoked, but nevertheless...
Materazzi: 'Zidane deserves Golden Ball'
http://football.guardian.co.uk/News_Story/0,,1819481,00.html
I still can't believe what Zidane did...I was disgusted by his act. He is a top paid professional soccer player, playing his last game ever and in the final moments of a World Cup game he decides to act like a little child on playground. How could he do that to his country and his fans? He could have possibly lost the cup for his country and has now ended his illustrious carreer with this big black mark on it rather then as a complete hero, applauded by all. Did it not cross his mind to perhaps just retaliate verbally or even perhaps confront the refs with Materrazzi's remark if it was so intolerable? Could he not have waited until after this most important game has ended to challenge Materazzi on his remark? It doesn't even matter what Matterazzi said, he was just trying to rile Zidane...and boy did it work. Not to defend Materazzi, but thats part of the game, pyschology warfare is a big part of the game and one has to know how handle it so that it doesn't end up costing u and ur team. Wow...he handled that in the most retarded and unprofessional way...if I was a French fan or teammate of his, I would be totatally pissed at his reckless reaction.
And he admits he does not regret what he did? Really....wow..I regret what he did...and I'm of Italian background and of course am thrilled that Italy won. But, I would have preferred that Zidane did not react stupidly and was able to end his carreer proudly fighting it out on the field playing soccer and chosing not to succumb to his machismo.
He deserved that red card and he should be ashamed of his action...what a terrible example he has set for young people who want to play this game. Well, hopefully at least they have a learned a lesson as what not to do and can see the consequences of actions like that.
But, I have to say...all though I think he was a complete idiot for doing what he did...he sure is a hottie! ;) ;)
Yay Italy! ;D
Maybe he was just bored, like I was. It was a sloppy game.
the best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
