First thing bought at open. Some might have taken profit from CAFE and thrown the money at SPIR.

Sure looks like it.  However, this news seems like it wasn't even worthy of a PR.  Surprised it got it to run over 50%.  The fundamentals look horrible on SPIR, so I'd be careful on this one unless it gets some kind of news with huge potential like CAFE did.
Title: Re: Gotta love SPIR

BTW, it now has a market cap bigger than CAFE's already...

Low float stocks like SPIR and CAFE are all about the momentum. Nothing else really matters. So technicals before anything else.

Yes, but momentum is much easier to maintain when there is a potentially huge story or good fundamentals that can justify a higher price.  Without those, the momentum fades and such stocks fall back hard.

I agree. I have the tendency to sell a rocket too early, but took profit in SPIR anyway. Greed is my greatest enemy.

Nice trade.  It's sold off from the high, but held relatively strong.  It still might have more to go tomorrow, but the lack of fundamentals make it a high risk play, likely to sell back hard at some point.

Yeah, it looks like the momentum's gone and it fell back hard.  If momentum players move on, it has a long ways to fall back.  Meanwhile, it's been a good daytrader after the fall.

And here we have another breakout with CAFE again. CAFE, CCTY, SPIR... they are all getting difficult to trade at their levels. I'm not in any one of these as of now.

No -- I did trade some this morning after the big drop as day trades, but I wouldn't want to own it now.  It looks like the momentum's gone and it can fall back hard.  The fundamentals will probably take it over and send it back to single digits.

SPIR fillied the Gap and triggered short term buy.

May move up towards $ 12 soon.
But also has the potential for single digits.
Keep stops in place on this one.

Keep an eye on it the next few trading days.

SPIR fillied the Gap and triggered a buy yesterday.

Triggered a buy?  I'm curious as to how it triggered a buy when all it did was sell almost straight down after the gap and initial run.  I've never seen filling a gap that way as bullish.  I traded some yesterday, but it looks way too risky here unless volume buyers come back in.  It looks much more likely to keep selling down to single digits to me.  It still has the gap from the lower 7's.  What do you see that makes it a buy?  Thanks.

Make your own decisions.  These are all high risk plays.

Box your position for a hedge if you prefer.

You are right, Rocket8...they are both into "solar stuff"  :D

SPIR had some trouble earlier this year, and for a short while was called SPIRE and you could buy the shares between $4-$5...

ESLR manufactures solarpanels, it is an US company, and they have gotten together now with highly sucessful Q in Germany, and are building a new production-plant there w. sub. from the German government - Germany is - together with Japan - furthest ahead in the world with installing solar for electricity production.

I guess I should add that I do not have any SPIR, and yes - I do have ESLR  ;)

And BCON, and DSTI and...and... ::)

Somehow I manage to sell off the good ones, and keep the loosers - and it has been serious for a while.

I sell the good ones - thinking that I'll take some profit - and off to the races they go!

The loosers I keep, thinking that: "surely the stock can't stay this low for much longer?" - But then, when they finally are showing an ugly loss, I sell...thinking that I must stop this loss - and guess what happens?  ;D

Maybe I should do everybody a favor and post wich ones I sell, so you guys can buy!

Keep your eyes on SPIR over the next few days --

When it touches back down to that $9.11 - 9.12 - 9.13 level of support it will present an excellent buying opportunity. It should form another small base at that same level and then rise slightly before breaking out in my opinion.

Make a note of this call and *SMITE* me if I'm wrong, but I think the PPS will be trading at near $15.00 within ten trading days.

Title: SPIR may run on Monday, but watch out!
Post by: robt on September 11, 2005, 04:46:11 AM
Associated Press, with hundreds of subscriber newspapers, recently ran an arrticle,
"Alternative fuel stocks skyrocketing," hyping Spire Technology, a firm whose stock price has multiplied 2.5 times in the last three months.

http://www.miami.com/mld/miamiherald/business/national/12612250.htm

In my opinion, there's a good chance that come Monday AM the momo players who created the spikey chart below will return for a quick point or two, and then disappear just as fast.

Important to remember: Spire Technology has been around for 30 years, losing money nearly the whole time. They have survived by taking government research grants, and occasionally licensing out the technology developed. Their recent profitable quarter was due to a couple of large, non-recurring payments for the licensing of technology (only one of which was for solar technology, the other was for medical catheter technology), and their next earnings report is certain to be dismal unless more non-recurring events arise.

I've made more money shorting Spire at its peaks than from investing long.

One statement made in the article, "the company makes a profit and has solid sales," is incredibly misleading. Reading the quarterlies does not foster that impression at all. In fact, a related party transaction with CEO Roger Little has brought him millions in lease payments for the company's facilities, while the company has stacked up losses.

I'm mainly posting this because I think the chart is very interesting, and would like to know what others more well-versed in TA make of it. At the leftt of the chart is a 20-day "bull flag", then the next 40 days show two more bull flags attempted, but lacking a proper "flagpost."

SPIR is a tricky one, and I think people forget that it was way down because of delinquency (spelling?) earlier in the year.

Title: Re: SPIR may run on Monday, but watch out!
Post by: robt on September 11, 2005, 08:33:01 AM
yipes...guess with both AP and the Times on the case there will be action in all four stocks.

The reason I like SPIR better than the others is that I've already ridden it up and down enough to feel fairly confident in calling its tops and bottoms, so I've been able to make out on both the long and the short side. The other companies are better businesses, so I can't rely on them taking a dive, as I can with SPIR.

Interesting NY Times quote from Spire's chairman: "Roger G. Little, Spire's chairman and chief executive, says he sees the Chicago venture as a harbinger of Spire's future."

Spire Solar Chicago was initially described, back in 1999-2001, as a flagship for Spire's plan to create multiple local solar businesses. The remnants of that plan are still on the web:

http://www.spiresolarchicago.com

http://www.spiresolarflorida.com

Visiting these sites are like visiting a ghost town. Spir's most recent quarterlies no longer make any mention of either of the localized Spire outfits.

as near as I can determine, Spire Chicago was a government-funded fiasco. The initial deal was for $6 million from the local utility and $2 million from the city:

============================================
Spire Receives $6 Million from Utility for Solar Power
BEDFORD, Mass., Aug. 23, 1999 -- Spire Corp. has entered into an agreement to provide $6 million worth of solar electric (photovoltaic) systems to Commonwealth Edison Co. of Chicago over the next 30 months. ComEd has agreed to give Spire right of first refusal through 2004 to supply systems beyond this initial commitment. This agreement is in addition to a commitment from the city of Chicago to purchase $2 million in systems from a Spire-formed, Chicago-based business.

The systems supplied under the Spire-ComEd agreement will be manufactured at a new Chicago manufacturing plant to be called Spire Solar Chicago. The formation of this business comes as the result of a collaborative effort between Spire, ComEd, the city of Chicago, and the US Department of Energy.

=======================================

In fall of 2002, Berkley Labs had this to say about the Chicago solar program:

In 1999, the City of Chicago and ComEd used a $2 million and $6 million purchase commitment, respectively, to lure Spire Corporation -- a Massachusetts-based manufacturer of PV assembly line equipment -- to build a PV manufacturing facility on a redeveloped brownfield site on the west side of Chicago.

Additional incentives are provided by the state's Renewable Energy Resources Program (RERP), which funds 60% of installed PV system costs, as well as anadditional $6 million from ComEd notspecifically earmarked for Spire systems, but nonetheless available for PV in general. This "brightfield" initiative" -- the first of its kind -- resulted in a new company called Spire Solar Chicago, and a new collaborative called the Chicago Solar Partnership.

Spire Solar Chicago has installed roughly 550kW since January 2000, mostly on public buildings such as museums and schools within Chicago city limits. While price reductions were built into the $8 million purchase commitments, Spire Solar Chicago has thus far had difficulty meeting them due to a number of factors, including construction delays, incomplete production lines and low production volume, a requirement to use expensive union labor, and strict building codes that have caused some installation delays. These factors have reportedly made itdifficult to beat $10 per installed watt. The new manufacturing facility was only recentlycompleted in February 2002, well behind schedule. In the interim, Spire Solar Chicago was operating out of temporary facilities withincomplete production lines and sub-optimal working conditions. Furthermore, the price reductions were based at least partially on a500 kW PV installation at another brownfield site, which has not yet happened. While Spire Solar Chicago has faced its share of difficulties, the company remains optimistic that prices will begin to decline now that it has settled into its new production facility and ramped up to full production capacity.

==========================================

The long list of excuses doesn't mitigate the failure.

By this time, SPIR's "optimism" was pointless, as the $8 million and the 30 month period were both gone. Despite SPIR's right of first refusal for city contracts through 2004, no major solar projects were announced after the above report was released in Sept, 2002. In mid-2004, Spire sold the production equipment in the Chicago location to BP Solar.

Here, as in a lot of writing about the solar business, Spire is getting the benefit of an effect I call "the solar glow" -- kind treatment by good people everywhere, who wish to find good and avoid criticism in every solar effort. This has allowed Spire to completely gloss over their stupendous failure in Chicago.

SPIR running now !
Title: Re: SPIR may run on Monday, but watch out!
Post by: robt on September 15, 2005, 08:48:49 AM
Yep, and I think it'll pick up more momentum today. But watch it -- as the chart shows, it lost 70-80% of its gains on the last two big rallies. "Letting the profits run" won't work here. Better to pick a top early than late.

Cumulina, the delisting issue with SPIR was due to stockholder equity falling below NASDAQ's 10 million requirement. The recent quarter brought it up to 11 million, but without the one-time events that filled their coffers last quarter, the issue is bound to rise again after next earnings.

The company seemed to acknowledge that this is still an issue in their last press release regarding the delisting:

Quote
"Although the Company believes it has regained compliance with the Rule as of June 30, 2005, in order to avoid future listing problems with respect to the Nasdaq National Market, the Company may still decide to apply to transfer the listing of its common stock to the Nasdaq SmallCap Market. "

CEO Roger Little didn't mention the move to the small cap index to Associated Press:

Quote
Since June, however, Spire's stock has doubled. It's now in compliance with listings requirements, said Roger Little, Spire's CEO. "The issue's gone away," he said. A Nasdaq spokeswoman did not return calls for this report.

SPIR is running again, based on a press release about a solar installation in a Connecticutt office building.

http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/050928/285156.html?.v=1

As is customary with Spire's "smoke and mirrors" PR, no financial details are disclosed, but spire's past pricing policies indicate that this deal adds maybe 100k to their top line.

This latest Spire pump is on a collission course with certainly dismal earnings scheduled for mid-November. Even if the 100k were to be included in the current quarter, it won't help.

Based on this pump (and an earlier PR about a photovoltaic production line Spire has sold to Unison of Korea), insiders have been selling like crazy since the stock rose above 10

I am doing the same -- initiated a short position which I expect to hold right up to and through earnings. Its size is modest, but I will add as Spire climbs, with intentions of holding a significant piece of SPIR at earnings.

Syndicated columnist Malcolm Berko recently had these apt comments for SPIR:

Dear Mr. Berko: Would you buy Spire and why or why not?

B.W.
Galesburg

Spire Corp. (SPIR-$11.18) is a $17 million revenue company that develops, makes and markets solar equipment, solar systems, optoelectronics and biomedical products. SPIR also makes and sells hemodialysis catheters and other related devices to treat chronic kidney diseases. However, SPIR's future strength may derive from its design and manufacture of special equipment to produce photovoltaic modules from solar cells and its application of biophotonic technologies.

Woof — that's a mouthful of polysyllabic words!

Higher second-quarter profits of 67 cents a share in mid-August ran the stock up from $7.88 to $13.37 on news of a 73 percent increase in revenues. Higher revenues resulted from the sale of two of SPIR's photovoltaic module assembly lines, a huge solar installation in Chicago and I think those big sales may be an anomaly.

SPIR has no debt, just 7 million shares out, a fair cash position and a $1.65 book value . I feel the company is light on management and light on reputation, its product line is no better than that of its competitors but it's a timely product and that's the major reason the stock ran so far so fast. SPIR is just a nice, dinky firm that is mired in mediocrity. The four top bananas at this 107-employee Bedford, Mass., firm are underpaid and they may be worth it. The stock is speculative and not even a good speculation at that. Don't buy it.

SPIR closed today at 10.74

It is so much better to see the history of a pick all on one thread. It does not matter to me one way or the other,if you made the pick or I made the pick, just as long as we make some profits. As is this stock has 4 different threads.
The history of a stock pick being in one place is what is most important to me.
What about you all ? Try it, you will see the advantages of this simplified process.

This is the thread that I first posted to when this pick was made,so this is the thread I will continue to post to.

I've been selling SPIR short the last few days.

SPIR cannot hold a gain, espcially at this juncture; even a modest amount of DD will reveal that its recent profitable quarter ws due to an influx of cash from two non-recurring license sales. Next earnings are very likely to be dismal.

The current pump was sparked by a press release concerning a complete non-event -- a single solar installation in an office building that will add, at most, $100K to the top line, and not even in the currrent quarter.

More details on the short argument appear here:

Today was a losing day for me in SPIR, congrats to longs! I still plan to win long-term, though, and have added to my short position.

I have to admit the chart is looking very strong!

When SPIR rises, iit's important to take profits early! Despite yesterday's strong-looking chart, and some positive premarket trading, SPIR was in decline throughout the day, closing at 10.63, which puts my short position just barely in the green

More negative progress, good for shorts. The precipitous oil drop not yet reflected in the chart.

Now we can see the oil drop, and the market's aversion to everything that has to do with energy.

Today I covered a third of the shares, at 9.30. This will allow me to short more if there is an AM run-up tomorrow.

A small-volume bull day. Not enough ooomph in the action to justify shorting further.

The pattern of this stock is to trade sideways for about two weeks, to spike up, and then to drop. I suspect it will be sideways for a while, so no more updates from me unless there's a concrete development.

No particularly new developments, but with all the recent disappointments in my long positions, let's look again at the pride of my portfolio, Spire Technology.

After taking profits, I've been hoping for a spike up, that would allow me to sell more shares short, but no such luck. Normally, at these levels solar bargain hunters would at least try to stage a rally, but the current sentiment against all energy stocks is preventing that.

But little matter -- without the spike, SPIR is bringing in profits every day. I wish I could say the same for my long positions!

Earnings are due within a few days.

They are certain to be dismal; they'll provide a sharp jolt to the many "buy and holders" who have mistaken SPIR for an investment.

There has been no sign from SPIR of any significant solar business this quarter. They recently moved their production equipment out of their Chicago location; this was released as news celebrating their increased production capacity in New Bedford, when it was actually an admission of failure in Chicago.

Back in March of this year, local government in Taos, NM budgeted $150,000 as a handout to SPIR to build solar production facilities there. Spir has issued no press on these plans, but newspapers in NM report that SPIR has failed to live up to the deal because of a lack of orders for the solar panels that would be produced there.

SPIR's two most recent press releases:

-- They received a $150k government grant to research dental implant technology.

-- CEO Roger Little placed fourth in his age division (65 to 70) in a Triathlon in Hawaii. (The PR failed to mention that Little, 65, was beaten by a 69 year old and a 67 year old in a field of thirty competitors.)

As stated above, SPIR's current valuation is as yet unaffected by the end of revenue from Bard Systems, which has been putting about $3 million a year into SPIR's coffers for licensed medical technology.

Also likely to be missing from this quarter is a payment similar to the $3.6 million paid last quarter by Japanese outfit Nisshinbo. The Nisshinbo deal, a ten-year solar technology licensing arrangement, for undisclosed financial terms covering an undisclosed region, may eventually bring SPIR royalties, but this quarter seems unlikely. No indication of any solar business can be found at the Nisshinbo website:

http://www.nisshinbo.co.jp/english/

I expect the delisting issue to re-emerge with the next earnings; the key figure in their financials will be "Stockholders Equity."

SPIR is being monitored by NASDAQ for compliance with their requirement that this figure remain above $10 million.

SPIR addressed this issue in an 8/5 release prior to last quarter's earnings:

Nasdaq will continue to monitor the Company's ongoing compliance with the Rule. If the Company fails to evidence compliance with the Rule upon filing its next periodic report with the SEC, the Company may be subject to delisting. If the Company were to receive a written notification of delisting from Nasdaq, it could appeal the decision to a Nasdaq Listing Qualifications Panel. If such an appeal were unsuccessful, the Company could apply to list the Company's common stock on the Nasdaq SmallCap Market.

Although the Company believes it has regained compliance with the Rule as of June 30, 2005, in order to avoid future listing problems with respect to the Nasdaq National Market, the Company may still decide to apply to transfer the listing of its common stock to the Nasdaq SmallCap Market.

In plain English, Spire EXPECTS the delisting issue to resurface, and will voluntarily leave the NASDAQ National Market and go to their small cap index.

Other companies have made this transition; according to my research on a stock by stock basis, it invariably comes with a significant haircut.

One other issue: in September of this year, CEO Roger Little told a reporter for the Associated Press that the delisting issue has "gone away." This was a month after the plan to voluntarily delist was published.

If SPIR does indeed move to the small cap, and long investors are hurt by the move, they could not have a clearer case for an investor lawsuit -- especially considering the huge volume of insider sales that followed the AP article.

Spire Corporation Reports Record Third Quarter 2007 Results
Monday November 19, 4:52 pm ET
Revenues Increase 70 Percent on Turnkey Solar Factory Demand
Sales of Turnkey Solar Factories and Capital Equipment Increase by 268 Percent

BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Spire Corporation, (Nasdaq: SPIR - News), a global solar company providing turnkey solar factories and capital equipment to manufacture photovoltaic modules worldwide, today announced that revenues increased 70 percent in the third quarter of 2007 on strong sales of solar photovoltaic production equipment.

The Company reported revenues of $9,845,000 for the three months ended September 30, 2007, compared to $5,794,000 for the same period in 2006. In addition, the Company recorded a gain of $2,707,000 from the sale of rights to utilize its trademark, income tax benefit of $884,000 and an extraordinary gain of $1,311,000, net of tax, on its equity investment in its joint venture, Gloria Spire Solar. Net income after extraordinary gain was $2,755,000, or $0.33 per basic share for the three months ended September 30, 2007, compared with a net loss of $1,941,000, or $0.24 per basic share, for the same period in 2006.

Revenues for the nine months ended September 30, 2007 were $25,421,000, compared to $15,062,000 for the nine month period in 2006. In addition, the Company recorded a gain of $2,707,000 from the sale of rights to utilize its trademark, income tax benefit of $884,000 and an extraordinary gain of $1,311,000 net of tax on its equity investment in the joint venture. Net loss after extraordinary gain was $856,000, or $0.10 per basic share, for the nine months ended September 30, 2007, compared with a net loss of $6,026,000, or $0.77 per basic share, for the same period in 2006.

Roger G. Little, Chairman and CEO of Spire, said, "We have now achieved three consecutive quarters of record revenues. During the third quarter, we have solidified our position as the worldwide leader in developing and providing turnkey factories for solar energy manufacturing and we continue to see strong growth in solar capital equipment sales going forward. Sales of our turnkey factories and manufacturing equipment increased by 268 percent over the comparable quarter last year. In addition to the strong current sales levels, we are also encouraged by the continued level of sales backlog in the pipeline. Margins increased compared to last year, and we expect to see continued improvement as we complete our extensive manufacturing expansion, become more efficient and integrate our growing workforce. Part of the gain from the improved margins was offset by higher selling expenses as a result of increased sales and marketing activity.

"During the quarter, we closed several major sales, including our first fully automated turnkey 50-megawatt (MW) module production line for Martifer Solar S.A., a division of Martifer Group, located in Oliverira de Frades, Portugal. And shortly after the close of the quarter, we provided a turnkey, 12-MW module manufacturing line to a customer in Russia, making them the largest module manufacturer in that country. These sales are a testament to the strength of Spire as a global equipment supplier and our dominance as the recognized leader for turnkey solar factory solutions."

"We also successfully restructured our solar systems operation with the formation of a joint venture with Gloria Solar, a leading manufacturer in Taiwan. We exchanged our existing building integrated Photovoltaics (PV) systems business for a 45 percent interest in the new venture, Gloria Spire Solar, LLC, which was capitalized by Gloria. In addition, we sold a 50-MW module production line to Gloria's existing operations in China, along with the right to mark their PV modules with the Spire trademark. This will enable Spire's management to better concentrate on our equipment business while continuing to extend the Spire brand in the marketplace. The joint venture is focused on the high-growth domestic systems market and we believe this new structure will allow Gloria Spire Solar to become a major player."

Mr. Little, concluded, "Our Bandwidth Semiconductor and Spire Biomedical operations continued to make progress towards profitability. Bandwidth Semiconductor increased its revenues while qualifying its two new commercial reactors with a key customer. We also are starting a new program to develop high-efficiency gallium arsenide solar concentrator cells and we are seeing strong customer interest in partnering with Bandwidth in this exciting new market. And our Biomedical operation reported revenue growth in both services and products."

SPIR's been holding a pretty steep trend-line since November.  It may have made a bigger move today if the market didn't sell off late this afternoon.  Good volume today ;)

Small solar Market cap of around $210 million. With revenues of $9.8 million.  Also was profitable last quarter.

I'm still bag holding a little bit of SPIR... :-\

SPIR did give an update on 2008 production capacity and revenues.  Market cap only $166 million...and expecting revenues of at least $80 million in 2008.  :)

So hopefully Solar is just in consolidation mode.

Spire Corporation Provides Strategic Update on Solar Expansion
Thursday January 10, 5:00 pm ET
Expanded Manufacturing Facility Provides Annual Revenue Potential of $200 Million; Company Projects Approximately $80 Million in Total Revenues for 2008

BEDFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Spire Corporation (Nasdaq: SPIR - News), a global solar company providing turnkey solar factories and capital equipment to manufacture photovoltaic modules worldwide, today announced that its recent 53,000 square foot solar manufacturing facility expansion, together with its refocused Spire Semiconductor solar-cell concentrator operations, are on track to significantly grow the company's revenues in the solar energy and solar capital equipment markets.

The company estimates that at full capacity, its Bedford headquarters facility can produce solar capital equipment valued at approximately $200 million in annual revenues. Based upon currently contracted backlog and anticipated delivery schedules for equipment, the company projects total revenues for 2008 to be approximately $80 million, primarily generated from the sale of solar capital equipment and turnkey solar factories.

"We're in the midst of a historic expansion of capacity in the solar field, with manufacturers around the globe scrambling to bring factories on line to take advantage of the coming availability of silicon solar feedstocks," said Roger Little, Spire Corporation's Chairman and CEO. "We've undertaken a dramatic increase in our facility to meet this demand, nearly doubling our manufacturing square footage and more than doubling our headcount in the past year. This expansion is progressing well and we're on track to generate roughly $80 million in total revenues for 2008, largely on the strength of our unique ability to provide a one-stop-shop for manufacturers wanting to enter the global solar market."

"Our newly refocused Spire Semiconductor facility also will participate in this expansion by servicing the fast-growing gallium arsenide (GaAs) concentrator solar cell market," continued Little. "This facility alone has the capacity to produce the equivalent of approximately 50 megawatts (MW) of 500-sun concentration, high efficiency multiple-junction concentrator cells. With nearly 30 years of experience in GaAs concentrators, we expect robust growth from this operation going forward."
