Just jumped in at .9 after chasing up from .78, new stem cell technology, I honestly dont know much about it just following the momo for the moment.... pretty risky clearly as it was up already 100% at the moment I bought it.

Ooops, I guess I posted a separate thread 2 minutes after you boatguy, and funny enough I got in at exactly the same price.  Hopefully Ramsburgh will forgive me and merge the threads.

Printing 1.44 as I write, this development seems to be like a holy grail of stem cell research.

I heard the news on the radio, googled it and put in a bid at .41 and hads to take a call. When I looked again, it was at .75.  Put in another bid at .67 on ashort pullback and they skipped me on that one too.  I quit chasing it, seems I get burned when I do that. It would have dropped like a rock if I had gotten filled !  And as I write this, its at 1.45.

Volume looks stong enough to break a resistance zone on the daily chart around 1.48 to 1.50.  I think it just keeps going higher today.

Update: broke that, next resistance at 1.6, looks set to break that too...

I keep having to redraw my trend line on my 5 minute chart upward, now I know why they call it parabolic.  Looking at the weekly chart going back to $8 I dont know where there would be any meaningful resistance, maybe the gap at $3.49?

Anyway, sold half just now at 1.86 for the other half free shares like boatguy, will just kick back now and see what happens, first time for me to get 100% profit in about an hour >:D  ;D

Advanced Cell to Host Investor Conference Call to Discuss Breakthrough Technique to Generate Embryonic Stem Cells without Harming Embryo
Wednesday August 23, 4:43 pm ET
Proprietary Method May Remove Ethical and Political Obstacles to Stem Cell Research and Federal Funding

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 23, 2006--Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. (OTCBB:ACTC - News), developers of groundbreaking human embryonic stem cell technologies to create next-generation medical therapies, will hold an investor conference call on Friday, August 25, 2006, at 12 noon Eastern, to discuss its novel technique to generate human embryonic stem cell lines from embryos while fully preserving the embryo's potential for life and development.

The proprietary technique, which was recently published in the scientific journal "Nature," aims to resolve many of the ethical issues currently stunting embryonic stem cell research and may finally open the door to needed funding from the federal government.

During the conference call, William M. Caldwell IV, Chief Executive Officer of Advanced Cell Technology (ACT), and Dr. Michael D. West, Ph.D., President and Chief Scientific Officer of ACT, will discuss the company's scientific advances and business initiatives, and will address investor questions.

Among the primary ethical objections of those who oppose the generation of human embryonic stem cells is that all techniques, until now, have resulted in the destruction of the embryo. The company's newly published proprietary technique may overcome this hurdle, offering the potential to speed the progress of stem cell science from laboratory to bedside.

"We hope that this new technique will allow us to make stem cell lines widely available for researchers around the country," said Mr. Caldwell. "Our goal is to help accelerate basic research and enable the translation of that research into real cures and treatments for many of the world's most devastating diseases."

In the paper in "Nature," ACT scientists described their technique to generate human embryonic stem cells (hES cells) using a method for deriving stem cells from human blastomeres with a single-cell biopsy technique called Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis (PGD). PGD is a widely used practice used at in vitro fertilization (IVF) clinics to assess the genetic health of preimplantation embryos. To date, more than 1,500 healthy children have been born following the procedure, and live with their families today.

Current embryonic stem cell technology is the source of a heated national controversy because it derives hES cells from the inner cell mass of later-stage embryos known as blastocysts, destroying their potential for further development. "What has made ACT's novel approach so groundbreaking is its ability to generate stem cell lines of equal scientific value from a single cell obtained from an 8-cell-stage embryo, while maintaining the embryo's potential to develop normally," said Mr. Caldwell.

Callers within the United States can access the conference call by calling (800) 230-1074, when prompted tell the operator you would like to connect to the 'Advanced Cell Technology conference call.' International callers can dial (612) 332-0228. An online audio web simulcast of the call will also be accessible at http://www.trilogy-capital.com/tcp/advanced_cell/.

ACTC may runaway even tomorrow. Only 17 million float and big momo action. As much as I like it I wont be buying at current levels. I already have few hundred free shares, so I am not putting my neck here. If you can watch the tape then you may make in a day what many would do in a year. But unlike today I can't watch the market. So not my cup of tea.

In addition it reminds me of ISON when it ran all the way from around 70cents to 6.5$ in few days. Likewise I see ACTC train not stopping anytime soon. Be careful.

ACTC traded more shares in the pre market than it did the entire day two days ago.  This is going to be an interesting day!

Update:  though my remaining shares were "free", I sold them at an average of 1.70.  should have sold the gap up in retrospect, but I am not complaining, this was a great ride.  I will watch from the sidelines, but volume started to dry up, and the candle today will probably be dark cloud cover.  maybe a pullback to the 50sma might be buyable.

Congrats all who had success with this one. News this AM regaring repricing of warrants from existing $2.53 and $1.27  down to $0.95 caused the price fall. Might make $0.95 a good entry as the warrants are priced right there? That said this type of fiancing and the super volatility makes this a real crap shoot now.
The conf call starts at 12:00 today so I assume very high volatility leading up to that.

I am watching as only caught this late:

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 25, 2006--Advanced Cell Technology, Inc.
(OTCBB: ACTC) today announced two separate financing transactions.

Advanced Cell received notices on August 23, 2006 from substantially all of the
holders of the Company's currently outstanding amortizing convertible debentures
and common stock purchase warrants issued September 15, 2005, exercising their
existing additional investment option to purchase additional debentures
and warrants. Upon closing, the additional investment option will
generate approximately $8.5 million in new capital. The Company expects
the closing to occur on or about September 7, 2007.

The terms and conditions of the additional debentures and warrants will be
substantially the same as the existing debentures and warrants, with the
exception that the conversion price for the debentures and the exercise price
for the warrants will be established based upon average closing prices for the
five days preceding the notice of exercise in accordance with the terms of the
existing investment option.

In addition, the Company has agreed to reduce the exercise price of its
currently outstanding $2.53 warrants and $1.27 warrants to $0.95 per share,
provided that a minimum of 85% of the holders of the $2.53 warrants exercise the
warrants as repriced. In connection with the repricing, the Company will issue a
replacement warrant to each warrant holder exercising the repriced warrant on
the same terms and conditions as the existing warrant at a price of $1.60. The
Company anticipates receiving funds from the exercise of the repriced
warrants in the amount of approximately $5,000,000. The shares underlying
the $1.27 warrants are not subject to a current registration statement.

In light of the exercise of the additional investment option and the warrant
transaction, the Company has terminated the private placement financing
announced August 22, 2006, as the need for that capital has been satisfied.

Additional details regarding both of the financings will be included in a
Current Report on Form 8-K to be filed by the Company with the Securities and
Exchange Commission. The additional investment option will be a private
placement made only to accredited buyers in accordance with Section 4(2) of the
Securities Act. The Securities will not be registered under the Securities Act
and may not be offered or sold without registration unless an exemption from
such registration is available. This notice is issued pursuant to Rule 135c of
the Securities Act, and does not constitute an offer to sell the Securities, nor
a solicitation for an offer to purchase the Securities.

With the huge volume in this stock it is hard to get an order filled.  I had to chase the first time 2 days ago from .78 to .9 and it was worth it then, but I was trying to get in around 1.00 this morning and gave up as I found myself chasing it to 1.08.

I gave up in part because I didnt want to chase, and in part because I saw the news about the dilution.  Until then I just thought that the drop was a natural drop to midway on the big white candle, but dilution is not good.

Of course all that being said it is at 1.13 right now, may run into the conference call.

Advanced Cell Provides Corporate Update
Friday January 23, 11:25 am ET
Company Anticipates Funding to File IND for Retinal Pigment Epithelium (RPE) Cells Program During Summer of 2009

WORCESTER, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. ("ACT") (OTC: ACTC) provided a corporate update today. The Company announced that it has accelerated its efforts to file an IND for its retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells program for the treatment of diseases of the eye in light of today's decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to grant clearance for a stem cell company to begin trials for the world's first study of a human embryonic stem cell-based therapy for people. The Company is close to securing the necessary funding which would allow it to make the requisite filings during the summer of this year. An IND filing is required in order to commence clinical trials in humans.

"We believe the recent administration change has increased funding opportunities for technologies such as ours," said William M. Caldwell, CEO and Chairman of ACTC. "Today's decision to allow the world's first study of a human embryonic stem cell-based therapy for people perhaps reflects a new view towards stem cell-based therapies on the part of the FDA and government."

Advanced Cell Technology is currently focused on using its proprietary technologies to generate stable cell lines including retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells for the treatment of diseases of the eye, including macular degeneration, which represents a $28 billion dollar market. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects more than 30 million people worldwide and is the leading cause of blindness in people over 60 years of age in the United States. AMD is a disorder that affects the macula of the eye that causes decreased visual acuity and possible loss of central vision. The prevalence of AMD begins to increase after the age of 50. Approximately 15% of people over 75 years of age have the condition.

ACT demonstrated the ability to rescue visual function in rats through implantations of RPE cells derived from human embryonic stem cells. In collaboration with Raymond Lund then at the Moran Eye Institute at the University of Utah and currently working at the Casey Eye Institute at the Oregon Health and Science University, the Company performed RPE transplantation into sub-retinal space of rats that naturally become blind in several weeks due to RPE degeneration and photoreceptor death. In the experiments conducted by the Company, the rats were injected with embryonic stem-RPE cells into the sub-retinal space of the eye at 21 days after their birth — an age at which photoreceptor degeneration has not yet occurred. As control measures, some rats received injections of cell culture medium alone or were not injected at all. Subsequently, tests for visual function were performed at 60 and 90 days after birth — times at which loss of photoreceptor cell has produced characteristic vision deficits. The results represented a major breakthrough. The injected RPE cells grew normally without forming teratomas. Soon, the rats were able to follow lights with their eyes and attained approximately 70% of the spatial acuity of a normal, healthy rat. Necropsy revealed that the eyes had grown layers of the retinal cells. The experiment demonstrated that animals receiving the human embryonic stem cell-derived RPE cells performed significantly better than medium-only treated (50% improvement), or untreated (100% improvement) controls in visual performance. In addition, the human embryonic stem cell-derived RPE cells did not appear to cause any side effects in the animals. The research was published in Cloning and Stem Cells and was also referenced in Scientific American.

US company finds "safer" way to make stem-like cells
Thu May 28, 2009 5:01pm EDT

*Method could move quickly to human trials, company says
*Bypasses cancer-causing methods to make human stem cells

By Maggie Fox, Health and Science Editor

WASHINGTON, May 28 (Reuters) - U.S. researchers said on Thursday they had come up with the safest way yet to make stem-like cells using a patient's ordinary skin cells, this time by using pure human proteins.

The team at Harvard University and Massachusetts-based Advanced Cell Technology Inc(ACTC.PK) said their technique involves soaking cells in human proteins that turn back the clock biologically, making the cells behave like powerful embryonic stem cells.

Dr. Robert Lanza of Advanced Cell sees almost immediate commercial applications.

"After a few more flight tests -- in order to assure everything is working properly -- it should be ready for commercial use," Lanza said by e-mail.

He said the company would seek Food and Drug Administration permission to test the cells in people by next year -- a process unlikely to be quick, especially with a brand-new technology such as this one.

Stem cells are the body's master cells, giving rise to all the tissues, organs and blood. Embryonic stem cells are considered the most powerful kind, as each one is pluripotent, with the potential to morph into any type of tissue.

Doctors hope to someday use them to transform medicine, for instance, by regenerating the cells destroyed in type 1 diabetes or regrowing eye cells to reverse blindness.

But embryonic cells require the use of an embryo or cloning technology, and several countries, including the United States, limit funding for such experiments.

Several teams of scientists have homed in on four genes that can turn back the clock in ordinary cells, making them look and act like embryonic stem cells. These so-called induced pluripotent stem cells, or iPS cells, could in theory be made using a patient's own skin, allowing grow-your-own transplants with no risk of rejection.

DIFFICULT WORK

Getting these genes into the cells is not easy, however.

The first attempts used retroviruses, which integrate their own genetic material into the cells they infect. Others used loops of genetic material called plasmids or other genetically engineered molecules to reformat the cells.

And another team used the proteins made by the four genes and valproic acid to reprogram cells, but Lanza said these methods all have drawbacks.

His team, working with Kwang-Soo Kim of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute and a team at CHA Stem Cell Institute in South Korea used a peptide, a protein fragment, to drag the human proteins into the cells.

"These have been around for a long time," Lanza said. "The AIDS virus uses the peptide to get into the cells it infects," he said.

Using cells from the foreskins of newborn boys -- a common laboratory technique -- they showed they could transform the cells into iPS cells. They regrew them into a variety of mature new cell types, they reported in the journal Cell Stem Cell.

"This method eliminates the risks associated with genetic and chemical manipulation, and provides for the first time a potentially safe source of iPS cells for translation into the clinic," Lanza said.

"This is the ultimate stem cell solution -- you just add some proteins to a few skin cells and voila! Patient-specific stem cells!"

One question that is not clear is who owns the technology. Lanza said many groups have tried to patent the various steps in the process and it is not yet clear whose patents will prevail.

Symmetrical Triangle (Continuation) Pattern
BreakOUT!

The symmetrical triangle, which can also be referred to as a coil, usually forms during a trend as a continuation pattern. The pattern contains at least two lower highs and two higher lows. When these points are connected, the lines converge as they are extended and the symmetrical triangle takes shape. You could also think of it as a contracting wedge, wide at the beginning and narrowing over time.

While there are instances when symmetrical triangles mark important trend reversals, they more often mark a continuation of the current trend. Regardless of the nature of the pattern, continuation or reversal, the direction of the next major move can only be determined after a valid breakout.

Edwards and Magee suggest that roughly 75% of symmetrical triangles are continuation patterns and the rest mark reversals. The reversal patterns can be especially difficult to analyze and often have false breakouts. Even so, we should not anticipate the direction of the breakout, but rather wait for it to happen. Further analysis should be applied to the breakout by looking for gaps, accelerated price movements, and volume for confirmation. Confirmation is especially important for upside breakouts.

Prices sometimes return to the breakout point of apex on a reaction move before resuming in the direction of the breakout. This return can offer a second chance to participate with a better reward to risk ratio. Potential reward price targets found by measurement and parallel trend line extension are only meant to act as rough guidelines. Technical analysis is dynamic and ongoing assessment is required. In the first example above, SUNW may have fulfilled its target (42) in a few months, but the stock gave no sign of slowing down and advanced above 100 in the following months.

ACTC Advanced Cell Technology Receives FDA Clearance For the Firs...

MARLBOROUGH, Mass., Nov 22, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. ("ACT"; OTCBB:ACTC) announced today that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the Company's Investigational New Drug (IND) application to immediately initiate a Phase I/II multicenter clinical trial using retinal cells derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs) to treat patients with Stargardt's Macular Dystrophy (SMD), one of the most common forms of juvenile macular degeneration in the world. The decision removes the clinical hold that the FDA had placed on the trial.

Stargardt's Macular Dystrophy causes progressive vision loss, usually starting in children between 10 to 20 years of age. Eventually, blindness results from photoreceptor loss associated with degeneration in the pigmented layer of the retina, called the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). . "There is currently no treatment for Stargardt's disease," said Dr. Robert Lanza, ACT's Chief Scientific Officer. "Using stem cells, we can generate a virtually unlimited supply of healthy RPE cells, which are the first cells to die off in SMD and other forms of macular degeneration. We've tested these cells in animal models of eye disease. In rats, we've seen 100% improvement in visual performance over untreated animals without any adverse effects. Our studies showed that the cells were capable of extensive rescue of photoreceptors in animals that otherwise would have gone blind. Near-normal function was also achieved in a mouse model of Stargardt's disease. We hope to see a similar benefit in patients with various forms of macular degeneration."

The Phase I/II trial will be a prospective, open-label study that is designed to determine the safety and tolerability of the RPE cells following sub-retinal transplantation to patients with advanced SMD. A total of twelve patients will be enrolled in the study at multiple clinical sites. The sites which are currently under consideration are the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA (headed by Dr. Steven Schwartz); the Casey Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon (headed by Dr. Peter Francis of the Oregon Health Sciences University); the University of Massachusetts Memorial Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts (headed by Dr. Shalesh Kaushal, Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology); the UMDNJ -- New Jersey Medical School in Newark, New Jersey (headed by Dr. Marco Zarbin, Chair, Institute of Ophthalmology and Visual Science); additional sites may be considered.

Earlier this year the FDA also granted Orphan Drug designation for the company's RPE cells. As a result, the company is eligible to receive a number of benefits, including tax credits, access to grant funding for clinical trials such as this one, accelerated FDA approval, and allowance for marketing exclusivity after drug approval for a period of as long as seven years.

Raymond Lund, Ph.D., a scientific collaborator with ACT, and considered one of the world's foremost experts in retinal cell physiology and vision restoration, commented, "The study results of ACT's RPE cells implanted in the various animal models of macular degeneration was phenomenal. If ACT observes even a fraction of that benefit in humans, it will be nothing short of a home run."

"Initiating our macular degeneration clinical trial represents a significant milestone in the progress of developing human embryonic stem cell-based therapies aimed at large worldwide markets," said William M. Caldwell IV, ACT's Chairman and CEO. "I think generations will look back at this time as one of the most exciting in the history of medicine. With the initiation of this clinical trial, and that of Geron's earlier this fall, the field of regenerative medicine is poised to take embryonic stem cell therapies from the realm of nebulous potential to that of tangible and real treatments that will make a significant difference in the lives of millions of people worldwide. This is truly a 'game changer' for the medical community."

Among the most common causes of untreatable blindness in the world are degenerative diseases of the retina. As many as thirty million people in the United States and Europe suffer from macular degeneration, which represents a $25-30 billion worldwide market that has yet to be effectively addressed. Approximately 10% of people ages 66 to 74 will have symptoms of macular degeneration, the vast majority the "dry" form of AMD -- which is currently untreatable. The prevalence increases to 30% in patients 75 to 85 years of age.

"These patient numbers are staggering in size," stated Edmund Mickunas, ACT's Vice President of Regulatory, "and when the impact on health and quality-of-life is considered in that context, macular degeneration represents one of the more significant unmet medical needs in our society. With the momentum of this Stargardt's trial, and the unique experience we have gained as one of the few companies in the world having succeeded in taking an hESC program into the clinic, we are preparing to extend our lead with an IND in the use for treating age-related macular degeneration, as well as filing to begin clinical trials in Europe, in the very near future."

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. ("ACT"; OTCBB:ACTC) announced today that it has strengthened its balance sheet through the elimination of approximately $3 million in debt over the past several weeks. The conversion of senior and subordinated debentures to equity has reduced the Company's outstanding convertible debentures to approximately $890,000. Since September 2009, Advanced Cell has eliminated approximately $33 million in indebtedness.

"We are pleased that we have taken these important steps to create long-term value for shareholders," said William M. Caldwell IV, Chairman and CEO of ACT. "For the past three years, the monthly amortization of certain debentures and conversion to equity of other indebtedness has contributed to a regular supply of stock that has adversely impacted trading. We hope that with the elimination of most of that debt that our stock will begin to reflect the Company's significant recent accomplishments and the potential for our technology platform in the future."

ACTC rumors....... ;D ;) :D

Is a European partnership in the works for embryonic stem cell derived treatment?
Posted by Patrick On Monday, December 13, 2010 0 comments
Thought I would share this with everyone. Story just hit.
"Rumors have surfaced that a European pharma partnership may be in the works for Advanced Cell Technology (OTCBB:ACTC).

The chatter centers around the same patented embryonic stem cell technology that the FDA granted orphan drug status to and recently cleared to begin a multi-centre clinical trial.

The move to allow the phase I/II clinical trial will make the company the second in the US to test a human stem cell type of treatment. The study will use retinal cells, which will be derived from human stem cells, to transplant in 12 patients in the advanced stages of Stargardt's disease. The company hopes to treat specific forms of Macular Degeneration and blindness by injecting embryonic stem cell derived RPE cells into the eyes of human patients."

Closer Look: Advanced Cell Technology Among Stem Cell Sector Stocks That Have Recently Set Themselves Apart From the Pack

Press Release Source: BioMedReports On Tuesday December 14, 2010, 9:40 am EST
LOS ANGELES, CA--(Marketwire - 12/14/10) - Failing to understand the implications of cashing in too quickly may be a problem that continues to plague uninformed traders in stocks that rise as quickly as some of today's emerging stem cell companies have.

The volume and news interest in Advanced Cell Technology (OTC.BB:ACTC - News) is still there, for example, but after yesterday's session it has become apparent that those only interested in fast money have begun to take profits. Just as they did when the stock doubled to $.09 on December first, short sighted profiteers handed over their shares to investors who gladly took the stock back up to an intra-day high of $.20 a few days later.

While taking profits is never a bad thing, taking them too quickly has a way of haunting impatient market players. Especially when they trade stocks that have risen -- on real news and science events.

On Monday, those who purchased discounted shares of ACTC stock from traders who headed to the exits were met with new rumors about potential European pharma partners for the company's embryonic stem cell derived therapies. Shares began to bounce off session lows, as the unconfirmed rumors and reports spread late in the day. It would not be surprising to see them continue climbing, just as they have after previous profit taking sessions during the past two weeks since ACTC has positioned itself near the front of the stem cell stocks pack.

The market saw the same type of action from traders at Aastrom Biosciences, Inc. late last month. Even after some headed to the exits with a few pennies in their pockets, others clearly recognized that these two companies have much more in store for investors. Aastrom shares have continued to climb each time traders cashed out. Even in the face of a recent dilutive financing, which had been anticipated by ASTM investors, forward-looking news events and milestones have proven far too intriguing to keep shares down.

Those familiar with the technology platforms presented by ASTM and ACTC understand the implications and tend to be real investors in these companies. They see that the science these companies have spent tens of millions of dollars developing for years is getting closer to moving out of the lab and into spaces filled with patients eagerly awaiting life-changing treatments. These are markets with vast unmet medical needs that potentially represent billions of dollars in profits.

As reported during last year's 4th Annual Stem Cell Summit in New York City, industry experts estimate that there are up to 300 firms worldwide engaged in some aspect of stem cell research and commercialization. Of that number perhaps 75 - 100 are creating stem cell therapies and of those a mere handful are toiling in the garden of embryonic stem cell research. And while the vast majority of stem cell companies are focused on developing drugs that can address up to 70 different clinical indications only two have ever gotten the green light from the FDA to proceed into clinical trials. ACTC, a stock trading its shares for less than the price of a stick of gum is one of those two companies. Geron Corporation, whose shares now trade near the $5 mark following their recent financing, is the other.

Forget the new rumors involving interest from large European pharma players who have reportedly taken notice of ACTC, and the fact that just last week, biotech behemoth Cephalon purchased a 20% stake of an Australian stem-cell therapy company in a deal that could prove to be worth $2 billion.

As everyone who read the report from London in last week's Wall Street Journal knows, rising pressure to find new products is prompting big pharmaceutical companies to license or acquire biotechnology companies' experimental medicines when they've barely been tested in human trials.

"Traditionally, the sector's big players preferred drugs with solid clinical evidence to show they work," writes Jason Douglas, who covers the health industry for Dow Jones. "But faced with the loss of patents on some big sellers, an overhaul of its own research-and development-priorities, and demand for more innovative medicines, Big Pharma is gambling more of its deal dollars on riskier bets in an effort to replenish its pipeline with new technologies."

Traders live for these types of rumors and hopes, but what baffles is why anyone would sell their shares in the face of short-term milestones and upcoming news events. Both ACTC and ASTM have those. In fact, management at both those companies have gone on record and explained what some of those milestones are. Candid comments from William M. Caldwell IV, Chairman and CEO of Advanced Cell Technology to BioMedReports in recent days have even made it clear that the recent good news flow from the company is likely to continue in the very short term.

Chances are, speculators will continue to rush in to these stocks in days ahead, but chances are only real investors who take the time to research and understand the implications of recent and future announcements from these companies will see multi-bag profits here. Rest assured, also, that regardless of the latest rumors, profits will come as those milestones and news events continue to unfold.

Obama's Secret Nod To Stem Cell Research
Did President Obama give his secret blessing to the stem cell industry despite religious opposition? It certainly seems that this is the case.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

PRLog (Press Release) – Dec 06, 2010 – Did President Obama give his secret blessing to the stem cell industry despite religious opposition?  It certainly seems that this is the case.  In the last few months, the FDA willingly approved human clinical trials two to leading stem cell research firms; Geron and Advanced Cell Technologies.

President Obama made it clear on his campaign trail that he would back stem cell research and allocate federal funding and grants to innovative stem cell research firms to further advance the industry.  To date, multiple companies have received millions of dollars in grants to find cures ranging from diabetes, spinal cord injuries, and blindness.

One company of note, Advanced Cell Technologies, has won the second FDA approval in US history for Stem Cell human clinical trials.  (The first approved human trial was awarded to Geron, however they are tackling a very complicated medical issue which may take years to prove successful.)

Advanced Cell Technologies, currently trading at 10 cents at the time of writing this article,  and is well on its way to find a cure for Macular Degeneration, age-related blindness, which affects over 30 million Americans alone.  If their clinical trials are successful, this will leave them with a clear monopoly on this untapped market.

There is no shortage of stem cell opposition in many religious sects, however, the tides seemed to have changed under the Obama Administration.  The stem cell industry has struggled greatly for the past decade under the Bush Administration.

Top stem cell research analysts are in agreement that Advanced Cell Technologies is well positioned to be the first US FDA approved Stem Cell Therapy.  Their human clinical trials are expected to start in the first quarter of 2011, and can potentially take only a few weeks to show positive results.  This is most likely the reason why investors have been buying up shares on the open market the past few weeks pushing up the companies stock over 100%.

Advanced Cell Technology Files in Europe for Orphan Drug Designation For Its RPE Cells for Treatment of Stargardt's Disease
Builds on FDA's Granting of First-Ever Orphan Status for ACT's Treatment Using Embryonic Stem Cells

Press Release Source: Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. On Thursday December 23, 2010, 9:27 am EST

MARLBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. ("ACT"; OTCBB: ACTC), a leader in the field of regenerative medicine, announced today that, working with the European regulatory consulting firm TMC Pharma Services, it has filed for Orphan Drug Designation with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for its Retinal Pigment Epithelial (RPE) Cells for use in treatment of Stargardt's Macular Dystrophy (SMD), also known as Stargardt's Disease. Orphan drug designation may provide ACT with several advantages, including ten years of marketing exclusivity for embryonic stem cell derived RPE cells upon market authorization for the indication, financial incentives such as fee reductions or waivers, provide free scientific advice during the drug development process, and access to a centralized review process for all 27 member states.

"In the past month, we announced significant milestones in our macular degeneration program," said Gary Rabin, ACT's Interim Chairman and CEO. "We have been approved to begin our first clinical trial in the United States for the treatment of SMD using stem-cell derived RPE cells. We have also filed an investigational new drug application with the FDA for treating dry age-related macular degeneration, or Dry AMD, which represents a $25-30 billion market in the US and Europe alone, with no treatments currently available. Earlier this year, we received orphan drug designation from the U.S. Food and Drug (FDA) Administration for our SMD program, which grants the Company seven years of marketing exclusivity in the U.S., among other benefits. Building on this momentum, ACT has now taken the next important step in expanding our global efforts by filing for Orphan drug status in Europe, identifying clinical trial sites and establishing our European operations."

"The sheer numbers of people suffering from these diseases are truly astounding," stated Robert Lanza, MD, ACT's Chief Scientific Officer. "Although the initial studies are designed to evaluate the safety and tolerability of this therapy, in picking Stargardt's as our leading indication for macular degenerations, we made the determination that based on the patient population to be enrolled during the Phase I and II studies, Stargardt's was the disease with the highest likelihood for the clinicians to see incorporation of RPE and early signals of efficacy. Degenerative diseases of the retina, which includes Stargardt's Disease, are among the most common causes of untreatable blindness in the world. As many as thirty million people in the United States and Europe suffer from macular degeneration. Through a culmination of years of innovation and hard work by ACT's scientific team, we believe we are finally in a position to offer treatment."

Dr. Lanza added, "While everyone at ACT is profoundly saddened by the tragic loss of our close friend and leader Bill Caldwell, we are, to a person, committed to realizing his dream for ACT and the transforming role that he saw for stem cell therapies in potentially improving the lives of millions of people. Not too long ago, in accepting the responsibility for the hopes of macular degeneration patients, Bill boldly asserted, 'We do not intend to let them down.' We will do everything in our power to honor that promise. ACT is uniquely positioned within the regenerative medicine field. We have the technology and a wonderful scientific and development team. We have a number of very promising programs in our pipeline, and I have no doubt that these will result in the legacy to regenerative medicine, and to medicine as a whole, that Bill Caldwell envisioned."

BioTime, Inc. and the University of California System Sign Cell Transfer Agreement for Human Embryonic Stem Cell Lines

Press Release Source: BioTime, Inc. On Wednesday December 22, 2010, 9:00 am EST

ALAMEDA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- BioTime, Inc. (NYSE Amex: BTX) today announced a material transfer agreement (MTA) with the University of California (UC) system to make five research-grade human embryonic stem (hES) cell lines available to UC system researchers. These lines are genetically identical to a bank of GMP-compliant hES cell lines that will be made available to California-based researchers under a recent agreement between BioTime and the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM). Institutions covered by the MTA include: University of California, Berkeley (Berkeley Stem Cell Center) , University of California, Davis (UC Davis Institute for Regenerative Cures), University of California, Irvine (Sue and Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center), University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA Broad Stem Cell Research Center), University of California, Merced (UC Merced Stem Cell Consortium), University of California, Riverside (UC Riverside Stem Cell Center) University of California, San Diego (UCSD Stem Cell Research Program), University of California, San Francisco (The Eli and Edythe Broad Center of Regeneration Medicine and Stem Cell Research at UCSF), University of California, Santa Barbara (Center for Stem Cell Biology & Engineering), University of California, Santa Cruz (Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering), Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, UC Davis Medical Center, UC Irvine Medical Center, UCLA Medical Center, Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center, UCSD Medical Center, and UCSF Medical Center. Employees of UC-system institutions who are interested in obtaining these cell lines for preclinical research are directed to BioTime's web site http://www.biotimeinc.com/CIRM2.htm for the relevant MTA containing an Implementing Letter.

This agreement follows a previously announced agreement with CIRM, the stem cell agency created when California voters supported a $3 billion funding measure for stem cell-related research and clinical translation. Through October 21, 2010, CIRM had approved more than 180 grants totaling more than $540,000,000 for projects being conducted in the UC system.

Under BioTime's agreement with CIRM, BioTime will initially provide research grade cell lines, and within one year, if requested, BioTime will also make available GMP-grade cell lines along with certain documentation and complete genomic DNA sequence information. The use of the GMP grade cell lines may streamline the translation of basic science to human therapies. Should the users of the cell lines and BioTime eventually sign definitive license agreements for commercial use of the cell lines, it is anticipated that BioTime will receive a royalty on net sales. Today's announced MTA with the University of California System relates to the initial research-grade cell lines and is intended to simplify the distribution of researchers in the UC system.

Background

Human embryonic stem cells are readily expanded cell lines with the potential to generate all human cell types. However, there are many scientific and technological steps that are necessary in order to turn this potential into a reality. In recent years, numerous disease model trials conducted worldwide have shown promising results for hES cell-based therapies. But to develop effective therapies for use in humans that will meet the regulatory standards of the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and other regulators, the cell lines that are used to develop those therapies must comply fully with current Good Manufacturing Practice (cGMP) standards that apply to all drugs and devices. The creation of clinical-grade cell lines is a substantial undertaking.

BioTime's Singapore-based subsidiary ES Cell International Pte Ltd. (ESI) has been at the forefront of advances in hES technology since 2000 and created the first cell bank of clinical-grade hES cell lines derived following cGMP principles (Crook et al, 2007 The Generation of Six Clinical-Grade Human Embryonic Stem Cell Lines Cell Stem Cell 1(5):490-4). These cell lines were created under conditions compliant with international standards of egg procurement and embryo donation. In addition, derivation protocols were used in the derivation of the cell lines that would conform to regulations controlling clinical-grade cell and tissue product development, including compliance with current good tissue and manufacturing practices (cGTPs and cGMPs). BioTime has agreed to make the following cell lines available to CIRM grantees and California-based researchers: ESI-014, ESI-017, ESI-035, ESI-051 and ESI-053 (described in greater detail in the above-mentioned article). Research grade versions of the cell lines will be provided to CIRM grantees and California-based institutions free of charge until April 30, 2011.

The GMP grade versions of these cell lines along with a letter of cross-reference to a biologics master file containing manufacturing, controls information, additional documentation needed to establish GMP compliance, and the complete genomic DNA sequence information of the cell lines will be available from BioTime, at the cost of producing and supplying the cell lines, to CIRM grantees and California-based institutions, by November 22, 2011. Upon signing commercialization agreements acceptable to BioTime, BioTime will receive a royalty on net sales pre-negotiated by CIRM and BioTime such that no royalty will be owed to BioTime for research use. For commercial use, a maximum 2.0 percent royalty on net sales (1.5 percent if other royalties would be owed by the CIRM Grantee/California researcher) will be paid to BioTime. In addition, the form of a material transfer agreement has been agreed to by CIRM and BioTime for research use by California-based researchers other than those in the UC system. The pre-negotiation of terms will serve to help accelerate research by eliminating protracted negotiations. UC system researchers are covered by the system-wide MTA described above.

A sixth cell line designated ESI-049 is currently being evaluated by a large pharmaceutical company for exclusive use and was therefore not included in the collaborative agreement with CIRM. BioTime will retain the rights to manufacture its own research and therapeutic products from the cell lines. Additional information on the agreement is available on BioTime's website at www.biotimeinc.com.

ACTC Advanced Cell Technology Secures $25 Million Funding Commitm...  by Business Wire  Dec 31 2010 9:40AM

MARLBOROUGH, Mass., Dec 31, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. ("ACT"; OTCBB: ACTC), a leader in the field of regenerative medicine, announced today that it has entered into a $25 million non-convertible stock purchase agreement with Socius CG II, Ltd. , a subsidiary of Socius Capital Group ("Socius"). Socius, based in New York and Los Angeles, has an impressive record of making investments in emerging life sciences companies. Under the agreement, ACT may sell up to 2,500 shares of non-convertible Series C Preferred Stock to Socius over a two-year period. On closing, Socius purchased 400 shares of Series C Preferred for an aggregate purchase price of $4 million. Proceeds will be used for clinical activities, including the Phase I/II trial for Stargardt's Disease, a potential clinical trial for Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration and general corporate purposes.

ACT expects to end the year with approximately $15 million in cash and equivalents, and less than $1 million of debt. The Company recently strengthened its balance sheet by selling 750 shares of non-convertible Series B Preferred Stock to Optimus Life Sciences Capital Partners, LLC under a previously announced $10 million Preferred Stock transaction. ACT also eliminated more than $10 million of indebtedness through conversions and settled more than $10 million of other liabilities.

"The Company enters 2011 in its strongest financial position ever," said Gary Rabin, ACT's Interim Chairman and CEO. "Through a combination of the cash on hand and ability to sell Socius additional Preferred Stock, we believe we have the financial resources to take our lead program in Stargardt's Disease, a form of juvenile macular degeneration, well into clinical development and to move our program for treating Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration through the clinic if we receive FDA clearance. Less than one year ago, the Company was significantly in debt and lacked the financial resources to take even one program through the clinic. Today, we are essentially debt-free and have the financial ability to move both of our promising programs through the clinic. We believe 2011 will be a year filled with exciting developments as we begin to get data from these programs."

The Company intends to file a Registration Statement covering the resale of the common stock issuable upon the exercise of the warrants and Additional Investment Right in connection with the offering. Additional details regarding the financing are included in a Current Report on Form 8-K filed on December 30, 2010 by the Company with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

ACTC  Advanced Cell Technology and The Roslin Institute Announce...  by Business Wire  Dec 27 2010 9:02AM

MARLBOROUGH, Mass., Dec 27, 2010 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. ("ACT"; OTCBB: ACTC), a leader in the field of regenerative medicine, announced today that it has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with Roslin Cells LTD ("Roslin Cells") of Scotland, in which the two companies contemplate a definitive collaboration agreement in the near future. They will work together to establish a bank of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)-grade human embryonic stem cell (hESC) lines using ACT's proprietary "single-ceblastomere" technique for deriving embryonic stem cells without damage to the embryo.

The collaboration contemplates that the hESC lines will be created and stored using protocols that meet the regulatory standards of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Roslin Cells will be responsible for maintaining the banked hESC lines, which will be made available for both research and commercial purposes. By utilizing GMP and careful characterization and documentation of the resulting hESC lines, it is intended that the banked hESC lines will be suitable to move readily from laboratory settings into clinic programs, thereby speeding translation research into human treatments. Predictability in price and commercialization terms is a key feature of the goals of the collaboration. Roslin Cells will promote access to the hESC lines from the bank as research reagents to both academic and commercial entities. In addition, ACT and Roslin Cells will publish a commercialization license so that third parties will have a reasonable and predictable path to commercialization of products using the same hESC lines that they may use in animal model studies for preclinical data. Commercialization licenses will also provide access to the cell lines biologics master file in order to establish regulatory compliance. Proceeds from commercialization licenses, including milestone and royalty payments, will be shared between ACT and Roslin Cells.

"The relationship with Roslin Cells has grown out of our initiatives in Europe over the past year, and comes as part of our close efforts with the Scottish Development agency. Along with the recent announcement of our European Orphan drug designation filing in our Stargardt's disease treatment program, the relationship with Roslin Cells signals the expansion of our commercial initiatives in Europe, and, more broadly, markets around the world," said ACT's Interim Chairman and CEO, Gary Rabin. "Roslin Cells is already one of the leading organizations in GMP manufacturing of stem cells. Through the creation of hESC lines derived using our proprietary 'embryo-safe' technique, we fully expect Roslin Cells to quickly become a leading hESC bank for Europe, North America and Asia. We foresee major demand for these embryonic stem cells from both researchers and commercial interests across the globe."

"Until we developed our single blastomere technology, embryonic stem cell research had been synonymous with the destruction of human embryos," stated Robert Lanza, MD, Chief Scientific Officer at ACT. "In stark contrast to embryonic stem cells lines currently available for research, such as those on the NIH registry, our single blastomere technique does not destroy the embryo. One of the benefits to an ability to create new hESC lines without destroying embryos is that it addresses ethical concerns of certain researchers."

The Company's single blastomere technique relies on isolating a single cell from a 4 to 8 cell embryo utilizing a one-cell biopsy approach similar to that used in pre-implantation genetic diagnostics (PGD). According to recent literature, one-cell biopsy as part of PGD is carried out routinely around the world, and one to two thousand children are born every year in the United States and Europe after being conceived by in vitro fertilization using one-cell biopsy and PGD.

"The availability of our 'embryo safe' hESC lines has sparked interest in many quarters, including at institutions that have been opposed to conducting embryonic stem cell research in the past," continued Dr. Lanza. "We are exploring opportunities to provide our cells to those institutions.

ACTC  Advanced Cell Technology Receives FDA Clearance For...  by Business Wire  Jan 3 2011 8:00AM

MARLBOROUGH, Mass., Jan 03, 2011 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Advanced Cell Technology, Inc. ("ACT"; OTCBB:ACTC), a leader in the field of regenerative medicine, announced today that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cleared the Company's Investigational New Drug (IND) application to treat Dry Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) using retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells derived from human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). ACT is now permitted to initiate a Phase I/II multicenter clinical trial to treat patients with Dry AMD, the most common form of macular degeneration in the world. There are currently no treatments available for this prevalent disease of an aging global population. Dry AMD, representing a substantial global market opportunity and afflicts between 10-15 million Americans.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration has two predominant forms, wet and dry. Dry AMD is the most common form, accounting for almost 90% of all cases. The progress of Dry AMD includes a breakdown or thinning of the layer of RPE cells in the patient's macula, the region at the center of the retina responsible for high acuity vision. Over time, the progressive loss of RPE cells and accompanying loss of photoreceptors can cause severe vision loss and even blindness.

"ACT is now the first company to receive FDA clearance for two hESC trials, and is now a true translational leader in the field of regenerative medicine," said Gary Rabin, Interim Chairman and CEO of ACT. "It marks a major step forward, not just within the stem cell sector, but, potentially for modern healthcare techniques. We plan to proceed into the clinic with both of our hESC-based programs as quickly as possible. ."

The Phase I/II trial will be a prospective, open-label study that is designed to determine the safety and tolerability of the RPE cells following sub-retinal transplantation into patients with Dry AMD. Twelve patients will be enrolled in the study at multiple clinical sites. Sites currently under consideration are the Jules Stein Eye Institute at UCLA, and the Ophthalmology Department at Stanford University School of Medicine. Additional sites may be considered.

"Dry AMD is the leading cause of blindness in individuals over the age of 55," stated Robert Lanza, MD, ACT's Chief Scientific Officer. "As the population ages, the incidence of AMD is expected to double over the next 20 years, further exacerbating this unmet medical need. Using our clinical-grade hESC lines, we are able to generate a virtually unlimited and reproducible supply of healthy RPE cells. Because only a small number of cells (50-200K) are needed to treat each patient, manufacturing and distribution of the therapeutic product is scalable with many similarities to the drug businesses that pharmaceutical companies understand well. Based on our animal model studies, we are very excited about the opportunity to treat patients. In a rat model of macular degeneration, we have seen a remarkable improvement in visual performance over untreated animals, without any adverse effects. We have also maintained near-normal function in a mouse model of Stargardt's Disease, a form of juvenile macular degeneration. In addition to this trial, we plan to concurrently use our RPE cells in our Phase I/II Clinical Trial for Stargardt's Disease, which received the green light from the FDA in November. We hope to see a similar benefit in both Stargardt's Disease and Dry AMD patients."

ACT's Dry AMD therapeutic program uses RPE cells derived from hESCs to replace the lost RPE cells in the patient's eyes. ACT's proprietary RPE cell manufacturing process is protected by a number of broad patents, as is the use of hESC-derived RPE cells for treating macular degeneration. While the initial portion of the clinical trial will focus on safety, in subsequent clinical trials the Company hopes to demonstrate that the RPE cells injected into the retinal space will be capable of slowing or halting progression of the disease, and potentially even restoring some visual acuity to patients.

"It is estimated that over ten million Europeans suffer from Age-Related Macular Degeneration, representing a vast unmet need and a significant market opportunity," commented Edmund Mickunas, ACT's Vice President of Regulatory Affairs. "We are moving ahead aggressively to seek regulatory clearance from the European Medicines Agency to conduct clinical trials in Europe."

Specific inclusion and exclusion requirements and Investigator contact information will be posted shortly at http://clinicaltrials.gov . Patients and their caregivers should refer to this source rather than contacting ACT or its representatives.
