Oct 16 (Reuters) - Lumera Corp. (LMRA.O: Quote, Profile, Research) on Monday said it successfully tested a wireless system that enables transmission of large amounts of data through high-speed telecommunications networks.
Shares of the company scaled a year-high of $5.49 before closing at $5, up over 200 percent, on the Nasdaq.
In a statement, the nanotechnology company said it expects to complete the development and testing of its multiband, millimeter-wave wireless communication system in mid-November.
The company said potential applications for the technology includes enterprise campus connectivity, local area network extension and distribution of high-definition video.
The technology could be used by government agencies as a high-data-rate wireless bridge for use in disaster recovery applications and by universities to transmit data, Lumera said. (Reporting by Mehul Shah in Bangalore)

Up another 15% today.
Jeez...look at the volume ::)
Applude!!
LMRA keeps going. :o
Another breakout today.
The saga continues. I remember IPIX went from $10 to $27 in two hours back in April 2004. With a low float, huge news, (and crappy fundamentals), LMRA has the potential to repeat that episode.
It went as high as 8.44 and closed at 666 ? ???.
Something looks fishy. looks like a major dump at the end of the day.
Nothing fishy. This is a low-float stock. It's meant to be volatile. Yesterday was a daytraders' day. Accumulation (about 4 million) and price (mid $6) remained the same as Thursday's close. It was essentially a repeat of ACOR last month, or IIJI last summer.
The future of the stock and the company hinge on this new technology, and the insiders have much more to lose than the speculators. So the heavy trading will certainly continue for a while, since story will last at least till mid-November when they have more test results.
LOL
Love the markets, dam if you do jump in and dam if you don't.....
I was dissapointed Friday morning that I didn't pull the trigger at $6.60 only to see it shoot up thru $8+. But I have to admit, that the last half hour only shows how in trouble the shorts are on this and I happily purchased near the close..........
Lets see, in a half hour 3 million shares brought it down $2 bucks..........No way will this last IMHO, look for a sling shot move when the dust settles to the upside.............
If PR comes out, lookout...............
NEW 52 WEEK HIGH TODAY !!!!!!!!!! ;D :D
Still going up in after hours 9.05. Ive been watching this one for awhile and never could figure out which way it was going. its a fast mover.
Short term support was stablized in the last few days at above $6. But the Harvard news was a real surprise to many. Speculators were still digesting the wireless news.
The trend is up. But who knows how high it will go!

Got stopped out yesterday at the mid $9s. The gap down was quite awesome since a lot of longs are trapped. Just bought everything back at the low $8s and set a tight stop in case it craps up some more. But so far so good in the first hour of today's trading.

It's been quite predictable to me in all these days. The most obvious of all is that big monies know that Lumera has something amazing to offer. The question is how important a player Lumera will actually be in the industry.

He wasn't prepared for the questions and he just pulled out random guesstimates on the future sales. It just made him sound unprofessional and not at all serious about the conference call.
But they will have the tri-band wireless test results out in mid-November. That will probably cause another rally.

Here's the news out: Lumera Achieves Multi-Band Millimeter Wave Communications System Milestone with Successful Test of Wireless Bridge at 10Gbps (http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/061213/20061213005348.html?.v=1)
Up 15% on pre-market as we write (although the news doesn't seem to be that significant, short covering, perhaps?). Market cap of about $125 M ... what's the story on this one? It's certainly a big mover.
The news that made it run so much on October 16 was similar, take a look:
Lumera shares jump on successful test of MMW system (http://us.rd.yahoo.com/finance/external/cbsm/SIG=11iiumket/*http://www.marketwatch.com/News/Story/Story.aspx?guid=%7b2E061CAC-6745-4EA8-BB90-2288E624C47F%7d&siteid=yhoo&dist=yhoo)
at MarketWatch (Mon, Oct 16)
Fundamentally it is impossible to justify the current valuation, only by the market size and potential of these apparently new technologies. What's their market size, anybody has a clue? I don't ...
Anyway, the good news seems priced in to me, we're talking about a $125 M market cap with $1 M in sales over Q3 and $2.7 M in losses ... and the share count is probably rising, as it almost always happens after a short term surge in a small cap like this (well, not so small).
This one should have a good January. They are unveiling their Proteomic Processor (biotech drug discovery equipment) on Jan 12th. Each of these sells at half a million bucks with more for supplies. Their main competition in this sector, Biacore, was bought for $438 million by GE Healthcare. In addition to this technology, they have other promising technology in communication (MMW) and satellites.

That is over 1/3 of the traded float. The next positive news event is going to be brutal for the shorts. The only danger is that the shorts might try to short more to protect their position. I think that is what happened with the latest news of the positive multiband test data.
I anticipate 2 important news events this month:
1. Independent third party confirmation of MMW transmission test (which is currently delayed from November)
2. Unveiling of the Proteomic Processor on Jan 12th.
I hope there is some kind of strategic partnership/buyout of one of their divisions, which is going to be insane. A good strategy would be to go long now and sell on top of the short fueled explosion and possibly short some on top before the inevitable return to sanity. I don't think I will short though (as I think my personality is unsuited to assuming that kind of risk).

Ugh. This stock has been really disappointing over the last few months! Any ideas on what the bottom is on this one? Thanks.
fyi:
Knobias clipreport:
One company deeply ingrained in the research of nanotechnology is Lumera Corporation (LMRA). The Company is concentrated primarily on the development of their proprietary polymer materials and products based on these materials for two primary markets: bioscience and electro-optics. They use their expertise in nanotechnology to design and synthesize these polymer materials at the molecular level. These materials are used in two very specific ways that will enable the Company to enter two vastly different markets but both with huge growth opportunities.
Knobias spoke with investor relations spokesperson for Lumera Corporation, Hélène F. Jaillet, about the Company and some of its opportunities.
"We were founded in October of 2000 and began to work on patents that we licensed from the University of Washington. At the time, the application was aimed towards the telecommunications industry which was experiencing tremendous growth," noted Jaillet. "After the telecommunication sector saw its falling out, our scientists saw that this technology could be employed in the bioscience sector."
The Company is currently developing their ProteomicProcessor(TM) in this sector. This compact device is used for detecting and quantifying binding interactions in a label-free format utilizing Surface Plasmon Resonance
(SPR) technology. The application is in the proteomics arena and used to facilitate drug makers in identifying possible compounds. This arena is specifically called the compound screening market. "The total market for compound screening in 2005 was around $2.3B, which includes instruments and consumable biochips. This market is somewhat like the razor blade market where the real revenue growth comes from selling the razor blades," said Jaillet. One of Lumera's competitors in this market was Biacore.
"They were acquired by GE Healthcare for over $350M last summer," noted Jaillet, "Our photonics approach uses a MEMS scanner which is scalable and allows higher throughput where their approach uses a fixed beam of light."
The Company also has an electro-optics division which focuses on modulators used in fiber optic transmissions that features the fastest switching speeds with the lowest drive voltages and optical losses in the industry.
In October, the Company announced that it had completed successful testing of its millimeter wave wireless bridge that will enable government and commercial entities to transmit vast amounts of data via a variety of high speed telecommunications networks. The test included transmitting 10 Gbps at 94 GHz, through the use of Gigabit Ethernet and other standard protocols.
In December, the Company announced testing of its multi-frequency band prototype, which is designed to transmit data at spectrum frequencies of 35, 94, and 140 GHz. Data rates from 2.5 Gbps to 10 Gbps were successfully tested and Lumera anticipated that the system will have the capacity to operate at a range of up to three miles per data link. In addition to high data rate transmission, the multi-band system offers adaptive frequency switching to provide link resilience by responding to changes in atmospheric conditions.
The amount of data is unmatched in the industry and is the equivalent of downloading six DVDs in one minute. "The speed of transmission is ten times faster than anything else in the industry," noted Jaillet. "We are unrivaled
at the speed of our system."
Fundamentally, the Company's balance sheet is in superb shape. They have no debt and have ample cash in the bank. With everything in place, the only risk now is execution of their marketing plan. Though their fourth quarter earnings (expected to be released on or around March 5th) might not display the ground breaking numbers, the name is certainly one to watch over the coming quarters.
http://www.knobias.com/clipreport/clipreport.pdf
The problem with LMRA is that they are not making any money in the short run. The hype is over and it's gonna be dead until later this year when they start selling their products.
It was quite a run in last October/November though.

LUM broke out of a Falling Wedge (pattern in blue) a week ago, and pulled back to the 50DMA at the end of the week. Falling Wedges often morph into Bullish Inverse H&S patterns (in purple). If that's the case, the neckline is 5.90 and 5.75.
MACD went above zero on Thursday, as the stock began to pull back. It's still above the zero line.
The RSIs have thrusted higher, and are pulling back to Bullish Synchroncity. The 13/21RSIs need to pull back some more, but the 89/144s are at Bullish Synchronicity right now. A print of 5.37 in Monday's trading would be a technical buy signal from that indicator. Stop below Friday's low of 5.12, or below whatever low is made on Monday, prior to the print of 5.37.
I'll post the RSI charts next.
The 13/21RSIs did a nice job of telegraphing a problem during the formation of the Bearish Wolfe Wave last autumn (unfortunately, I just studied this chart this morning!).
At Wave 1, there was a negative divergence. At Wave 3, a DOUBLE negative divergence. At the Wave 5 upside fakeout the day before the release of earnings, a TRIPLE negative divergence.
The Wolfe Wave target at #6 MADE when the 13/21RSIs broke down, and the next rally failed at Trendline 2 (T2), with the 13/21 RSIs at Bearish Synchronicity.
In the current time-frame, the 13RSI has had a nice thrust higher above its shadow, the 21RSI. There isn't always a pullback to Bullish Synchronicity (where the readings are very close), but we can see that this has some room to pull back some more, into synchronicity, then thrust higher again on a breakout above 5.90 - 5.75.
Farther down the Fibonacci sequence, the 89/144 RSIs had a thrust higher on the Falling Wedge breakout in the price chart, and now are at Bullish Synchronicity. Friday's high of 5.36 becomes the "buy pivot." A print of a penny above that, 5.87, on Monday is the buy signal from this particular indicator.
As with any indicator, we have to decide whether or not we like the chart well enough to take the signal, and then structure a favorable risk:reward accordingly.
I'm in at 5.05 today on news...hopefully not too high.
