Moving averages are one of the most basic tools used by traders. If a stock is under many or all of the key moving averages (20-, 50-, 100-, 200- and 250-day moving averages), then that stock is probably headed lower - regardless of what the fundamentals look like. There's an old Wall Street saying that cautions, "Don't buy stocks, buy companies." Investors tend to buy companies, while traders tend to buy stocks. However, the very best investors soon realize that both components are required in order to achieve top results. Before you make an investment, it's worth a look to see if it's actually moving in the right direction, or if it's above most of its moving averages.
Combination of these 3 works just fine ;)
1) The 3 moving averages
2) Sudden rise of volume
3) Weekly MACD Bullish Cross -- above zero level, Exactly @ zero level, bounced off at zero level or near @ zero level.
I will post lots examples of 3 magic lines here, so please check back on this thread ;)
Quoted from the book "The Amazing life of Jesse Livermore"[/color]
The big money is made by "the sitting - not the thinking." Once a position is taken the hardest thing to do is to be patient and wait for the move to play out. The temptation is strong to take fast profit or cover your trade solely out of fear of losing the profit on a correction. This error has cost millions of speculators millions of dollars. Be sure you have a good clear reason to enter a trade and be sure you have a good clear reason to close your position. It is the big swing that makes the big money for you.
Let's face it, emotion always kicks in once we enter that trade... ;)

Terliso,
Awesome post ;D, let me be the first to applaud you on all the effort to post all those charts! Between your post and Aussies "STEPS" posts there is some great information being shared on these boards right now.
My question would be how you go about scanning for these stocks? I played around a little in Stock Fetcher, admittedly not long enough, but maybe you could provide some clarification on how you go about finding these stocks to begin with? Thanks!

I use www.stockfetcher.com to look for stocks; my favorite & one and only filter there is the "30 Day – Price – New Highs." Once you click that it will give you about 100 to 500 matches, it all depends on the condition of the market. If the market is down then the results are roughly about 100 stocks to choose from. But from those hundreds of results only several stocks matches with my 1, 2 & 3 strategy, so I guess you get the idea.... (It's time consuming).
Tonight I found several stocks that corresponds to my Strategy:
EGO, PMU, ATRS, AZK, CGR, SKNN, SDRG
OK, I see. no such thing as a free lunch eh? ;) Of course maybe we can ask the guys at stockfetcher for a custom filter. (I tried asking them once for exponential moving average on volume to approximate David's filter, but I dont think they implemented it yet.)
So if I understand correctly then, you look at each stock that made a 30 day high, then plug in the ticker to stockcharts.com, then just look for your criteria, right?

You nailed it tokyopua! ;) .... But I use a simple trick for short-cut, I just click the 30 day & focus myself to below $10 stocks, that makes my job easier. ;)
Hi Terliso...
what do you think about these three magic lines ?

nice strategy! might stockcharts.com stock scans be used for this strategy, they have bullish, bearish scans and stocks listed. guess will check out stockfetcher. and if i see any that might fit the 3 magic line strategy, is it ok to post here or might terliso like to make another thread for that?
lastly, msn at http://moneycentral.msn.com/investor/controls/finderpro.asp and yahoo at http://screener.finance.yahoo.com/newscreener.html have stock screeners we might like to check out. They seem powerful, guess just need to see if they can help us narrow the investment selection a few whether going long or short.
also, another methodology, http://www.trade2win.com/knowledge/articles/general_articles/stage-analysis/page1 , agree, disagree?

If you scrolled up, these are the stocks I have posted in this thread that fits in my 1,2 & 3 Strategy.... and there are lots more I'll post it later on:
VPHM, CHINA, GIGM, STEC, PTSC, AOB, BCON, AVII, CHDT, CHTR, IIJI, HSOAIf you noticed & research some of these stocks, they also the ones that reported good numbers or will report good numbers... Just like CHINA, CHINA was already in the bullish mode in the beginning of august & just 2 weeks ago the company reported good numbers...
My point is, you can actually use this 1,2,3 strat as a signal for "good earnings ahead" even though I don't know how to do a Fundamental Analysis that simple technique tells me that earnings will be good... It's kind of funny huh? but that what I noticed. ;)
CHINA showed up in my stockfetcher filter this august:

Terliso, so just to clarify:
To check charts to see if they have the 3 magic lines, do u use the daily or weekly. Because the the weekly and daily charts will reflect the 3 lines in difffernt positions and with different pps's?
As seen with APPI below.
In APPI Daily chart, we see the 3 magics running below the current price.
In APPI Weekly, the lines are in very differnent positions.
Also, u prefer to view the MACD on the weekly and not the daily? Why is this? Dont u just want to be able to see the MACD "above, exactly, bounced off of or near the zero level", at the point of the uptrending pps that has occured above the 3 magic lines? Isnt it still sufficient to use the daily chart to see this, provided these events took place within a shorter time frame and therefore not requiring the lenthy view of a consolidated MACD? As some of these stocks have all these requirements happening within less then a month, a couple of weeks even, so the weekly chart wont really be anymore useful here...or is it? Like in APPI. Or is APPI not a good representative of the 3 magic lines because they are only seen in the daily chart.
Ok..i think i completely confused myself..and most likely u too :)
thanks.

Sweet, thanks for that feedback, because I realize now that I didnt read your post correctly and was looking for the weekly MACD
historgram to be above zero lol, not the weekly MACD signal lines and their bullish cross. But while on the subject, do you mind elaborating though on why its important to you that they be above zero when they first crossed? For example, with GOAM they are now above zero, just didnt cross there...
Also, now I will add your accumulation/distribution plot with the 80 dma just so that I am follwing the same charts exactly. BTW, is there anything in particular you are looking at with the A/D lines there?
Let me answer first these questions...Julia, don't be confused ;) :D

Julia,
1) I use the daily chart to see if the 3 moving averages is grouping together there & the price should be above the 3 moving averages and the 50sma must come from below like a Golden Cross (see daily chart of SIGA below).
2) The volume should be high also
3) Then I go to weekly chart to see if there is a Bullish MACD Crossover happening, if there is,then the 1, 2 & 3 strategy is complete then I'll trade that stock. for the record, I actually trade SIGA & made 160% profit from it. ;) good trade! ;D

Multiple applauds Terliso. I think 3 Magic Lines ROCKS!!
So to celebrate I am adding one for you. Check VLNC. Whilst is doesn't quite get all the ticks (weekly MACD has crossed zero line but not signal line cross) we do have big volume and cross through closely clustered 3 magics (with the 50 positioned to cross from below) on a lovely white candle today. A break of $2.25 and $3 area would be the target.
Thanks again for Terliso for the vauable contribution
Thanks Aussie... I hope everybody find this information useful.... your VLNC looks like a 3 magic candidate too ;)
Well, let me add some too.... TSYS, CRNT, PMU & CALD I have these in the stock picking board

Huh? Not sure why u r asking me this? I see the MACD lines and the histogram together on my chart, ur charts show the same thing. Am i misunderstanding something?
In regards the MACD lines, does the signal line and the MACD line both have, above, near or the 0 line? I understand that the MACD line does, but the signal line as well?
Again to clarify ad nauseum; So, the 50 ma should be just below the 200ma, approaching a cross. But, does the 200ema position matter in relation to the other 2 lines ? Can it be below or above or even inbetween the 50 &200ma's? is latter even possible? lol

Yes... I think that's the best set-up ;) ....& the price should be on top of the 3 moving averages already while the 50sma still approaching a cross.

cross.
** You have to focus on the 50MA not the 200EMA, because obviously 50sma moves faster than the other 2. **
Look at the chart of ANGN below:
--- Sometimes the 50sma can even come from the top & meet the 200ema & 200ma there, we called this a "Bounced off" & the price should be on top of them. (see ANGN chart below)
--- Sometimes the 50sma also from the top & goes in between the 200ema & 200ma, meeting again the 2's & again
price should be on top of them. (See daily chart of BGO below).

Terliso, what do you think?
Automatic scan for 3 magic lines.
Hey guys,
I have constructed a very simple scan that basically says:
If the following is true:
• Daily Close for today crosses above 50-day Simple Moving Average of Close for today
• Daily Close for today crosses above 200-day Simple Moving Average of Close for today
• Daily Close for today crosses above 200-day Exponential Moving Average of Close for today
Then display results of US stocks with average daily vol >60K.
Results for today are:
BFLY
CDCOR
EGLF
TAGS
Note: This does not include the MACD weekly cross check (looking at how to do that), that will have to be done manually for now. I am also cross checking how results are affected by changing the number of days look back. Anyway.
I am thinking to add this as a daily scan into the trading sytems board http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?board=37.0 it would be under a sub thread called trading signals.
Feel free to let me know if that is of value to create such a daily scan.
Cheers
I think it would be a wonderful idea.

Hi Terliso
Came across your thread yesterday, very interesting concept. I'm not a day trader or short term trader, I'm more of a swing trader usually for several weeks to months or years. Although I will accumulate & reduce as required according to the chart action.
Anyway I was so interested I spent last night going through all the posts on this thread, also went thru half a bottle of single malt scotch while reading them all. In the past I've seen some of these types but was always reluctant to chase it after that big initial jump, often a healthy gap up. All the examples here look very good and probably worked out just fine, I guess you just have faith in the system and jump in with appropriate hard or soft stops in place. But I have to wonder how often you get failures of the pattern and what do you look out for to signal that something may not be quite right?
I also like the tie in with AussieT's steps method for entry, looking at that thread tonight and maybe the other half of that scotch bottle.
Your method of scanning for prospects seems like a lot of work, where do you find the time. Do you do it every day or just once a week or so ??
I think I read that AussieT was working on a scan, I will also try to develop a custom scan using Stockcharts advanced scan engine and see what I can come up with. Hopefully I can contribute something useful to your effort.
Great work thanks, if I could applaud you I would, but will have to wait until I get a few more posts under my belt so as to qualify.
happy trading / investing

NP says AGF does well unloading its First Quantum
2006-12-14 09:34 ET - In the News
See In the News (C-FM) First Quantum Minerals Ltd
The National Post reports in its Thursday, Dec. 14, edition the Canadian materials industry was on a tear in 2006. The Post's Sonita Horvitch writes in the Buy & Sell Roundtable the question now is whether the group will continue to prosper in 2007. Materials stocks are up 38 per cent this year to November. AGF Management chief investment officer Martin Hubbes says: "If you are a long-term thinker, China and India will be a factor. FDMLQ looks like a candidate for the T3ML, these q stocks keep popping..wiating for this one to possibly do the same.
Any thoughts?

Hi Terliso,
Been doing a little more work on my idea of a scan to help look for possible stocks for your strategy. I know Aussie Trader has also done some work on this to, so I hope we can collaborate a bit and get a good working scan. I've put a copy and a detailed explanation of my scan over on Deadb440's TA advanced scan interface board, so if you're interested you can see the details, link as follows;
http://www.3stocksonfire.org/trading/index.php?topic=4755.msg81368#msg81368
Terliso, basically I'm just trying to follow your basic rules,
1) The 3 moving averages
2) Sudden rise of volume
3) Weekly MACD Bullish Cross -- above zero level, Exactly @ zero level, bounced off at zero level or near @ zero level.
and I added a few other qualifiers like, price between $0.5 and $15, min 20 day ave liquidity at greater than $500K, 3 ma's within +/- 5% of each other.
I just ran the scan tonight and these are the ones it picked up, WBTO, TTP, LSCC, DOCC, DFC, CF/UN.TO.
Now I will throw out DOCC as they just got a buy out offer, and I won't talk about Canadian stocks right now, the other four have some possibilities. I know TTP has already been mentioned on this board so I was very happy that the scan picked it up. For convenience I've included a couple of charts here.
Let me know what you think about the scan and if you have any other ideas, I haven't looked up anything on the following companies which I would have to do before any decision you know standard DD.
Happy trading / investing

So ENER would not qualify yet for the 3 magic lines because it has not had a bullish cross yet... From the looks of the ENER chart its at 0 MACD again and ready to retry for a bullish cross over. So if ENER makes a bullish cross this time around that would qualify it as a 3 magic lines pick?
EDIT: NM I see the price needs to be above the 3 magic lines.

T3ML ----> NWACQ is definitely fits here.... strong resistance @ $6.00 that could be the top ;)
NWACQ hit the resistance @ $6.00... fantastic run! ;)
Too much resistance, NWACQ is tanking...

Yes Terliso, interesting chart, but have to agree.
Pretty bad looking three candles thru the 18th and a little bounce of $3.50 today , but I don't see alot of strength and I think $3.50 will also ultimately fail. That last run to $6.50 was on lower volume and with neg divergence on a few indicators.
I always a little scared of getting involved with these companies operating under chapter 11 bankruptcy, they can be very volatile and have some great runs. But as an unsecured common shareholder its a bit like playing musical chairs, you never know when after hours they will announce some deal to emerge from bankruptcy protection. Usually this involves new financing and new shareholders and new stock. Now most of the time the old stock just stops trading and the new shareholders get the new stock, old shareholders end up with wallpaper.
On a different note, I've been taking a look at the charts on BFLY and they seem to be similar to your T3ML system. But I didn't pick it up with my scan, had to do a little massaging of settings as the daily traded $ setting was a little too high to catch this one, also had to widen the band a little for MACD coming from a little farther below zero.
I'm gonna be very busy over the next couple of weeks with Christmas family reunion stuff, but will try to find some time to make some updates to the scan.

Well maybe that was a mistake, I've also been concentrating in other areas. This morning they received a buyout offer. Charts below as of thismorning.
Anyway would have been nice for a day or so. I would say it is dead money now as a buyout, unless you wanna start a bidding war. If I owned it today I would just take it and move on.
happy holidays

Modified the scan slightly to open things up a bit, will put new copy on the ASI board. Basically lowered the liquidity requirement to $200K and allowed the macd to be slightly more negative. These mods will pick up more possibilities but will also let in more trash which will have to be sorted out by reviewing the charts.
Below are the one which I got today, with charts of the more interesting ones below.
AXM.V BCGI BFLY GMST PGRI SDIX TTP WBTO ZAP LSCC

Don't forget ONT ;D
OKME
Not a lot of volume
Any thoughts on PYTO?
Volume always helps.
PYTO looks like the right news could set it off.
Looks like everyone sold the news on Dec. 4 although it may have kept going if the company said the FDA had approved fast track status.
Tough call on pharma, you can wake up with a double or wake up like NFLD and jump out the window ;)
Watching to see how this plays out, could get interesting above .69
Julia's DSNY is looking interesting- on watch!!
May have some more downside short term but I think this could really go.
Gonna dig a little deeper into this one ;)
apologies if someone already posted this. TSTC is a value stock compared with other stocks in the space (GRRF). It is also on IBD's stocks under $10 list. I think it is also fits T3ML, which I am just get to know.

Good pick :D
I've had it on my list for a few days but never had the chance to post a chart here or any in depth analysis. TSTC just keeps pushing higher and higher with another 52 week high today. Applaud Zib and hope you'll take a look at my watchlist as well. I'm very open for suggestions as I'm working with limited resources right now. :-[ Cheers and happy New Year's!
You like Golf? ;) ......Magic on the move ;)
PESI ;)
Does HRCT and PAYD qualify?
How do you time an entry? TIA
Terliso,
Are ZL.TO and PFSW qualified for 3TL? Thanks.
what about SABA?
Saba Announces Record Second Quarter Fiscal 2007 Results
Revenues and Earnings Exceed Guidance; GAAP Revenues Grow 61% from the Prior Year
REDWOOD SHORES, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 4, 2007--Saba (NASDAQ:SABA), the premier provider of human capital management (HCM) solutions, today reported financial results for its second quarter of fiscal year 2007 ended November 30, 2006.
"We delivered strong financial results and significantly improved operating margins," said Bobby Yazdani, Saba's Chairman and CEO. "Our product offerings continue to lead the industry; as a result we continued to win deals with new blue-chip customers for global deployments as well as with existing customers for expansion."
Second Quarter Results
Total GAAP revenues in the second quarter of fiscal 2007 were $26.2 million, representing a 61% increase compared to $16.2 million in the same quarter last year. License revenue in the second quarter of fiscal 2007 was $6.9 million, representing a 36% increase compared to $5.1 million in the same quarter last year and OnDemand revenue in the second quarter of fiscal 2007 was $3.8 million, representing a 371% increase compared to $804,000 in the same quarter last year. Net loss was $1.0 million, or $0.04 per share on a basic and diluted basis, in the second quarter of fiscal 2007 compared to a net profit of $131,000, or $0.01 per share, in the same quarter last year.
On a non-GAAP basis, total revenues increased 67% to $27.8 million from $16.6 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2006. Non-GAAP net income in the quarter was $2.0 million, or $0.07 per share on a basic and diluted basis, compared to non-GAAP net income of $694,000, or $0.04 per share on a basic and diluted basis, in the second quarter of fiscal 2006.
Deferred revenue at November 30, 2006 grew to $27.6 million.
Cash generated from operations was $3.1 million during the quarter. In the quarter, Saba made acquisition related payments of approximately $1.5 million. Excluding these acquisition related payments, Saba generated $4.6 million from operating activities.
Non-GAAP results are computed by adjusting GAAP results to exclude the amortization of acquisition-related intangibles, stock-based compensation expenses and the write-down of acquired deferred revenue to fair value. A reconciliation of GAAP to non-GAAP results is included in the financial statements accompanying this press release.
Key Customer Wins and Significant Developments in the Second Quarter
During the quarter, Saba's momentum continued as it signed deals for a number of large enterprise and government customers, including: AT&T, Cemex, CVRD, Deloitte, Deutsche Telekom, Ericsson, Novartis, Rhodia, Rockwell Automation, Royal Mail, Schering-Plough and Sentara Healthcare.
Saba's second quarter results reflect strength across a number of key verticals, including the public sector, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, financial services and the oil and gas industries.
Business Outlook
The following statements are based on current expectations as of the date of this release. These statements are forward-looking, and actual results may differ materially. Saba does not undertake to update these targets in any way or for any reason.
-- For its third quarter of fiscal 2007 (February 28, 2007), Saba
anticipates total revenues to range from $26.5 million to
$27.5 million on a GAAP basis and from $27.0 million to $28.0
million on a non-GAAP basis.
-- Saba anticipates net earnings per share for its third quarter
of fiscal 2007 (February 28, 2007) to range from breakeven to
earnings of $0.03 on a GAAP basis and earnings of $0.07 to
$0.10 on a non-GAAP basis.
The non-GAAP outlook excludes the estimated non-cash amortization of purchased intangibles ($929,000), charges related to stock-based compensation expenses ($500,000 to $600,000) and the write-down of acquired deferred revenue to fair value and amortization of acquired backlog ($480,000).
Hey Terliso,
I know we have been quiet on the 3ML setups lately, but check this one out: CRDM.OB (cheers Setravis) This is a 3 magic lines play ready to rock and roll!!! we just had the cross, explosive volume, MACD bounce, everything is in place for an explosive move....
gotta love it ;D ;D ;D
OK OK, after about 2 minutes of DD a HUGE red flag came up on CRDM:

Terliso, may I kindly ask for your ASTI opinion?
