gharknes,
See the existing DROOY file on the Previous 3SOF Picks Board.
DROOY is coming back to life with high volume coming in, backed by bullish Ascending Broadening Bottom Pattern ;)
Goodluck guys!! ;)
anyone have any thoughts on this one? hit 52 week low of $1.07 today. my order didn't fill.
"DROOY" Threads have been Merged.
Please use the search before starting new threads on a Stock Pick.
Chances are a thread already exist.
So why not post whatever you have to comment about on that pick to that thread.

All history on a stock pick in 1 thread is awesome. ;)
Thank You....and good luck with all your trades....make some $$$ 8)
setravis, can you merge this thread with David's previous thread?

Between Sep 05 - Feb 06, as 3SOF recommended, DROOY went from $1 to $2 (2001-2002 run went from $1 to $5).
Historically, DROOY has rebounded off $0.625 in 2000, $0.62 in 2005, and most recently $0.62 in March of 2007.
http://finance.yahoo.com/charts#chart5:symbol=drooy;range=my;indicator=volume;charttype=line;crosshair=on;logscale=on;source=undefined
Current initial rebound went from $0.62 in March 12 to $0.92 in May 14 with confirming RSI 14 rebound/peak (MACD stayed in positive territory) with distinctive channel of 4 "saw tooth" peaks.
I was anticipating that RSI 14 dip to previous rebounding point below 30, but it appears that it may be rebounding above 30. 10 MA hasn't rebounded and if RSI 14 rebound continues, I am looking to buy for another run to at least $2. ;)
No, those threads do not get merged with anything on this site.
That is a history of 3SOF Portfolio Previous Trades.......Although you can go there and post updates to those threads.
But you did get merged with this thread that already existed on the Stock Picking Board
Thanks. :D
Continuing to watch DROOY. ;)
Continuing to watch for 10 MA bottom and RSI 2 rebound.
RSI 2 approaching SELL signal.
Continue watching for RSI fall below 30 and look for rebound BUY entry point.
RSI 2 signaled brief BUY but MACD approaching positive.
Once MACD turns positive and remains positive, gain should continue, but I would like to see rebound signs of 10 MA.

Comment:
DROOY has a difficult long term chart, with a clear downtrend, but a lot of volatility and interesting moves in the middle… With the recent Gold rally into new highs, DROOY is already up almost $4 since August lows, breaking out a strong descending resistance, then consolidating a few days below the EMA-200 and now up again into new relative highs with increasing volume, the overall pattern looked like a Bump and Run Reversal Bottom, which is a very strong technical pattern...
The stock has a resistance slightly ahead at $9.40, but after that there is only one price reference at $13.30… This is a dangerous speculative stock, with poor fundamentals but this chart is quite interesting at least for the short term…
Regards ;)
It took me a couple of hours to fully understand what's going on with DROOY and now I don't have much time to pass the information on to you, so I'll try to summarize why I'll add DROOY to the Main around today's open:
1 - DROOY sold off its Australasian operations, which were losing money ever since they started. This strengthened the balance sheet and put management's focus in the company's South African core mines.
2 - DROOY is an unhedged South African gold producer. The company wasn't particularly efficient and has been losing money over the years, because it's total cost to produce an ounce of gold has been around $600 oz. It was $584 per oz in Q3 2007. So, with $GOLD around $600, DROOY was at about breakeven, so the business wasn't worth much.
But with gold at $900 oz the company will be very profitable, earning $300 plus per oz of gold produced in gross profits.
I need to send today's newsletter quickly, so let me just tell you this: I made some calculus and considered all the company's various costs and with gold at $900 I see 2008 EPS of $1.71. This estimate puts DROOY trading at 6 times forward EPS while the Gold group trades at 46 times EPS (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/co?s=DROOY).
- Production at the company's South African mines has been increasing lately, as you can see in the latest earnings release (http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1023512/000120561307000142/0001205613-07-000142-index.htm).
DROOY has been rising rapidly and today it is already up about 5% in the pre-market and that looks like a breakaway gap to me.
The Trading Plan is: BUY DROOY, 6.66% of capital.
This one i like. Thanks for the insight.
David,
How does DROOY's cost of mining gold per ounce compare with its peers? The reason I am asking is that if it's higher production cost can limit its competitiveness, what will happen if the gold prices decline from present values?
Thanks,
Berloga.
Although i still have a lot to learn,I have to ask. With all the futures way down premarket, what was the big hurry to buy this one?

Gold stocks are on fire these days and heading north .. Gold reached $900 or the first time
I realize gold is the place to be right now. My point is this morning,if you want to cross the street and big truck is hurtling towards you, maybe it's better to let it pass before you cross, that's all.
Theme for 2008 is pretty clear:
1. Long GOLD (miners)
2. Short OIL (DUG)
3. Short CHINA (FXP)
And maybe short Solar / alt energy
Rest in cash.
Good luck all..its been brutal out there.

I don't have time for the exact numbers now Berloga, but it compares poorly. This is why DROOY has a price to sales ratio of 1.46 while a low cost producer like GG has a price to sales ratio of 15.
If the gold price declines from the current $900 oz to, say, $300 oz in a couple of years time DROOY will lose money and the share price will go down.

You're right, I shouldn't be in a hurry, but not because of futures, since DROOY was up 50% in a couple of weeks while the general market went down sharply, so the two actives are not positively correlated. The stock could very well go up 10% yesterday while the SPY fell 2.5%.

Indeed, instead of a breakway gap DROOY reacted badly to the $10.3 resistance level. But I thought it would happen differently and the S&P futures aren't a factor, since the two things aren't correlated. I was wrong.

I disagree with these themes or shorting any stock in general. If you want to win when stocks in general go down go trade futures ... stocks have too much company specific risk to be shorted and shorting stocks is a losing money proposition over the long term, in my view.
But I respect your view and welcome that you share it with us, thanks :)
With all this I have 6 minutes to send today's newsletter and don't have time to explain how come I see $1.71 EPS in 2008 for DROOY if gold averages $900 oz.
I'll just send the newsletter now, have a coffee and then I'll come back to write the explanation with more time while the market is open.
I'll keep holding DROOY for the long term.
David,
I was suggesting shorting via Proshares..DUG is the ultrashort OIL & FXP is the ultrashort China..probably stating the obvious.
Picked up some DROOY sub 9 today :)
Nick
QuotePicked up some DROOY sub 9 today :)
Nice entry Nick :)
Ok, let me explain how I got to the $1.71 EPS for DROOY in 2008.
DROOY has three mines in South Africa (the continuing operations) which are Blyvoor, Crown and ERPM. In Q3 2007 the three mines produced 89,157 oz of gold which was sold at an average price of $693 an ounce. The cash operating cost of producing an ounce of gold, on average, was $584.
I consider that:
- Production will stay the same, at 89,157 oz per quarter;
- Cash operating cost stays at $584 oz;
- Other costs will remain at around $9 M a quarter;
- Price of Gold will average $900 oz in 2008.
((((89,157*$900) - (89,157*$584) - $9,000,000))/37,520,000)*4 = $2.04 EPS in 2008.
Ok, I forgot taxes, this is why I get an higher than the $1.71 EPS I talked about earlier. This is because I don't know about South African law and to what extent DROOY won't have tax benefits in 2008 for all the losses it had over the years.
So I figure that with $GOLD averaging $900 oz, DROOY will earn about $0.5 per quarter, if everything stays basically the same.
But there are some clues that the future can be better than the recent past:
«
Looking AheadContinuing improvement in the performance of our existing South African operations (covered in greater detail later in this report) points to the success of our ongoing programme to stabilise these operations. Further, it reinforces our decision to exit from our Australasian interests and to 'come home', so to speak, and focus all of our resources here.
Work on our Ergo Mining Joint Venture with Mintails SA ("the Ergo JV") continues apace, with recovery of slimes from the Elsburg Tailings Complex and retreatment through the refurbished Brakpan plant at an initial rate of 1.25 million tons a month expected to yield some 200kg of gold a month when the project gets underway. The boards of the partners in the Ergo JV have approved a capital investment of R400 million, with excellent prospects for further growth from gold, uranium and sulphuric acid production.
On the matter of uranium, we report elsewhere in this document on our declaration of a 17.5 million lbs uranium resource for our Blyvoor tailings dams, coupled with a 0.8 million tons sulphur resource and a 236% increase in the mine's surface gold resource to 1.69 million oz, and on additional exploration programmes under way at our other operations to further define and quantify our uranium potential. Encouraging updates are also provided on our underground exploration activities and project developments. With the Australasian exit now complete, I am confident we have all of the resources – a good mix of assets above and below ground, enthusiastic executive and management teams and a robust balance sheet – to position us well to establish a solid home base.

I'm still not aware of what's the story with DROOY and Uranium, besides knowing that uranium has been hot in the market.
But even without all this "new activity", just the increase in the $gold price from around $600 to around $900 completely changes the profit outlook for DROOY, and hence, its share price.
With $2 EPS, if DROOY were to trade at 20 times earnings (which would still be less than half of its peers), it would then be a $40 stock.
I'll hold DROOY.

I can't find any news nicknite20 ... and $GOLD is up again today, to $917.5. Could it be that, as the stock rose 17.5% yesterday, people are taking profits today and hence selling it down 11% in the pre-market?
I'll keep looking for any news, maybe something out in South Africa, or related to the Rand?
I don't know, but with $gold at $900 plus I see DROOY's 2008 EPS at $2 plus, so if I'm right the stock is incredibly cheap and can only go up.
South Africa turns off power to miners, sending gold rallying
9:14a ET January 25, 2008 (MarketWatch)
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- South Africa's leading miners halted operations on Friday, sending gold futures into uncharted territory, after the companies agreed to curtail use of electricity as the state-run utility struggles to generate enough power to meet the country's needs.
Is this a buying opportunity maybe? As the disruption would probably be temporary??
Talk abt sovereign risk affecting investments !!!
Nick
Placed a $10.4 order yesterday and was going to upgrade it today, but came in the morning and found it filled! Will ride it with David now. I guees, it's a good sign that in the face of the turmoil in the market, DROOY actually held up pretty well.
Spoke to a South African colleague of mine..he feels that mining industry will be least affected by power shortages as they're key to revenue of the state. So i think the reaction is overdone. There may be some profit taking though due to the huge surge yday.
I think gold & gold miners is a good space to be in for now.
We've had this news affecting South Africa's stocks, as nicknite20 posted:
South Africa's power shortages threaten growth (http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/south-africa-turns-off-power/story.aspx?guid=%7B5255614E-8D87-4564-A2E3-5680181725B6%7D&siteid=yhoof)
I think this certainly will have an adverse impact on DROOY's operations, but it won't be a material one.
DROOY has been outperforming its South African peers:

GFI is a $9.8 B market cap company and HMY is a $4.3 B. DROOY is just $0.4 B.
In my $1.5 - $2.5 EPS estimate for DROOY in 2008 I've considered that the company just maintains its gold production levels (which I think is highly achievable, even with the power shortages) and that $gold averages $900 throughout the year. Gold closed at $910.7 on Friday.
I'll keep holding DROOY for the long term.

QuoteDavid,

I think the stock should close 2008 around $40, if $GOLD remains above $900 or rises towards $1,000 (it closed yesterday at $927), but if I get $20 - $30 in six months I'll probably take it.
DROOY is a medium term investment, not a long term one.
QuoteOnce again..nice pick & happy bday.

Thanks Nick :)
Sounds good David..i took 25% off the table today though. Given my cost basis of low 9s..i thought its prudent to book some profits.
I'll let the rest ride for now.
I also have a position in AUY..so my exposure to gold miners is quite significant for now.

It looks like South Africa's miners can resume production now, using 90% of their previous electricity capacity:
South African Gold, Platinum Mines Can Raise Power (Update2) (http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601116&sid=an55.TnOERAw&refer=africa)
(thanks for posting this in PAL's thread pinoleropuro)
DROOY's share price wasn't negatively affected by the power failures (as other South African miners were), but I sure expect it to get an additional boost with this positive news.
I'll hold DROOY for the long term.
If one compares DROOY chart with other South African miners (like GFI and HMSY, for example), one clearly sees that DROOY is the best pick of the group, almost not affected by the electricity crisis in South Africa.
With $GOLD at $920 plus DROOY is at least a $20 stock.
DROOY reported results for the October-December quarter yesterday before the open and they were quite bad: DROOY quarterly report (http://www.sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/1023512/000120561308000033/drd_report.htm)
The bad results were mostly attributed to temporary factors in management's comments.
Despite the bad news, the stock shot up 7.4% to a new 52 week high. I think this happened because investors are looking into 2008 results already and with $GOLD standing at $950 an ounce it is clear that DROOY will have a fat profit, something not seen in several years at that company.
Also the company has some new mining operations set to start in 2008, which can increase gold production, as you can read on the earnings release.
I'll keep holding DROOY for the long term.
DROOY rose 9% to a new high yesterday, with $GOLD at $962. No, I'm not selling DROOY, because I think that with $GOLD around $900 the stock is worth at least $20 and I'm not bearish on gold, just not extremely enthusiastic.
$GOLD may very well go to $1,200 rapidly, I certainly wouldn't short it. That would put DROOY in the $40 level.
I'll keep holding DROOY for the long term.

I just wanted to say that I'm bullish in DROOY but not in gold stocks in general. Of course, $GOLD closed yesterday at a new all time high just a bit shy of $1,000, but I believe most gold mining stocks have anticipated and discounted this surge in the precious metal. This explains gold mining companies extremely rich valuations even when $GOLD was around $500.
Stocks "knew" this was coming and now the Gold industry trades at 48 times earnings and 12 times annual revenues (http://finance.yahoo.com/q/co?s=GG).
But not DROOY. DROOY's market cap doesn't reflect $GOLD's advance, not yet.
With $GOLD at $1,000 I expect DROOY to profit no less than $2 per share in 2008, which puts it trading at 6.5 times earnings. I'm positive that DROOY will move up to at least $20 over the next 6 months. If $GOLD breaks out through $1,000 on its way to $1,200, then I say DROOY's fair value is something between $30 and $40.
At the current market price of $13 DROOY is an absolute buy in my view.

Retain a Hold on DRDGOLD
Tuesday March 4, 2:22 pm ET
By Paul Raman, CFA
DRDGOLD Limited (NasdaqCM: DROOY) is an unhedged gold-producing company with operations in South Africa and Australasia [Australia + Asia]. The company has separated its South African and Australasian operations, thus becoming a more focused entity.
With minimal debt on its balance sheet, DROOY is well positioned to undertake expansion activities. However, there are some challenges faced by the company with respect to its aging assets, environmental laws, currency risks and power shortages. Thus, we rate the stock a Hold with a six-month target price of $14.50.
Currently, DROOY shares are trading at a 27.1x 2008 EPS estimate of $0.48, which is well below the industry multiple. DRDGOLD has low debt, strong liquidity, and a no-hedging policy. Although it has faced challenging times with its South African operations in the past, the company is recovering and is ready for a turnaround.
With its unhedged policy, the company is benefiting from the strong gold prices. However, the currency exposure to the Rand and aging assets in South Africa pose some risks for the stock.
QuoteCurrently, DROOY shares are trading at a 27.1x 2008 EPS estimate of $0.48, which is well below the industry multiple.
Considering DROOY's average costs and the current price of $GOLD, I think DROOY will make something more like $2 EPS in 2008, instead of the $0.48 EPS estimated by Zacks.
Therefore I'll keep holding DROOY.
Pay attention to this one. Gold still in sell off mode.

Yes, big sell off in $GOLD, down more than $100 an ounce in just four days. DROOY fell 23% from the top.
In my view of the fundamentals, if $GOLD remains between $850 and $950 DROOY is worth more than $20 a share. That will only be evident when the company reports 1st quarter and especially 2nd quarter 2008 results.
I guess that over the short term DROOY may go down to close the gap at $9.79 ... or it may react positively to the $10.3 horizontal support. I don't know.
I'll hold DROOY.

Indeed, DROOY came down to fill the gap at $9.79. Fundamentally nothing has changed.
If this was the Technimental Portfolio probably I would be buying back the stock now that the gap was filled. But I remain confident that with $GOLD above $900 DROOY should be valued at $20 a share.
4Q results were disappointing, or else we would be north of $15 ... I expect 1st quarter results to be better.
Nothing new at DROOY, just fluctuating with the gold price. I expect Q1 results to show a nice profit. They should be released over the next couple of weeks.
$GOLD closed at $926.8 and DROOY continues to be 50% undervalued.

With minimal debt on its balance sheet, DROOY is well positioned to undertake expansion activities.
However, there are some challenges faced by the company with respect to its aging assets, environmental laws and currency risks. Further, as most of the production cost is in Rands while gold is generally sold in dollars, the company is exposed to currency risk by an appreciation in the value of the Rand. DROOY has been disappointing, despite being "cheap":
QuoteCurrently, DROOY shares are trading at a 13.1x 2008 EPS estimate of $0.69, which is well below the industry multiple.
Hopefully the stock will bounce from the 200 days SMA area, like it happened in late December. 4th quarter 2007 results were quite bad, but I expect 1st quarter 2008 results to be much better, since $GOLD was about $200 higher, on average.
But still, a bad play. I'll hold DROOY some more time, though.

berloga, it is a downgrade from March ??
cheers
O.
Oliver, oops, yes, it was March 28. Yesterday was April 28 so I mistakingly posted the downgrade. Nothing happened to DROOY yesterday. David, what is your estimate for this stock based on gold prices and prospected growth?
QuoteOliver, oops, yes, it was March 28. Yesterday was April 28 so I mistakingly posted the downgrade. Nothing happened to DROOY yesterday.
Oh yes it did :(
It seems like you were guessing, the stock was downgraded yesterday and fell 12.2%.
I'm really sorry but DROOY seems to be another "it looks cheap so I'll buy it" mistake of my own.
As it happens most of the times, stocks are cheap for a reason and if one doesn't know that reason, he really doesn't know what he's doing. Acknowledging the stock is cheap is easy and not an edge over other investors. I thought I knew a great deal about stocks, but now I must be humble and recognize I knew little in comparison to what is needed to prosper in this business.
So, it seems, DROOY has "aging assets", meaning there isn't much long term sustainability to its long term business prospects. In more simplistic terms, it appears to me that DROOY's mines are running out of gold and it has been costing more and more to extract the gold that still exists. This is the cause for the discounted price versus other gold miners.
The research report attached below doesn't say this, and it still rates DROOY a BUY, but it cuts estimates and price target severely. But I can read between the lines.
I once had a 25% plus profit in DROOY and now will exit with a 28% or so loss. Anyone just following the chart could have avoided this outcome.
The lesson learned is: if you're going to use a tool, like fundamental analysis for example, make sure you're a master at it. Make sure you know all the available information. Or else you are, like I was, firing shots in the dark.
Again, I apologize for this loss. It has been painful to realize I knew little (and still don't know much).
The trading plan for DROOY is: SELL.
;)
