Title: SMSI
Post by: dan on May 27, 2005, 02:42:15 PM
I've been evaluating SMSI today, which seems to have jumped up on better than average volume.  I think this stock may have potential to go even higher over the next couple of days, ....say around $6.  Does anyone else see it this way?

Looking by the chart, very risky. I think they're much better picks out there with less risk.  That's just my opinion.

I've been wondering how long it would take for one of the members to find this situation. good for you . The ex-wife is a seller of the stock and that keeps a lid on rallies near term. However the fundamentals of this company should be looked at by Michael. I can't post specifics until Dec . However, I can say that recent corporate events need to be examined by some members who can post specifics. I know that a good look will open some eyes ,this is more than a quick trade. 3rd and 4th quaters will be of great interest to the long term future of this stock.

I'm limited in my posting ability until Dec because of licensing restrictions, not insider knowledge. But I can respond to a direct question. Near term the Chairman's ex-wife can continue her disposition of her stock. I believe that this challenges any short term trading plan. However, as an investor, one needs to look at the underlying fundamentals of this company and consider where this stock will be 12 months from now. I suggest you look at the business partnerships with verizon and vodafone, the recent acquisition of allume, the projections for 3rd and fourth quarter earnings, cash in the bank, no debt, small float, and past stock trading activity. Currently, I see Macd-bullish,RS-bullish, Up-down volume-accumulation,10d and 50dma uptrends. However the ex-wife has been an undisciplined seller leading to hard sell-offs. I am long this stock and my comments are my opinion only. Hope this helps you in your dd.

SMSI was my stock for the second contest ended up 14%. Fridays move to 8.43 may indicate that this will take on dec 04 high of 11.03. Verizon's business is screaming and I think SMSI is looking at a couple of great quarters. This stock is thin and can move big time if the buyers show up. One caveat, former wife of Ceo is a known seller and can show up at any time. One day she be done

Go to the second contest final results and pull up my post on this one>it will give you my background thoughts. Back in Sept Saffeysite1 and I brought this up at 5.60 and I indicated I was long term on this one.
Here are the Street's consensus numbers for 4Q05. 7.7 mil & .10 eps. This is Vs 3Q05 revs of 6.9mil & .08 EPS. Merriman's looking for 80% rev growth for 06. I am waiting to see if this quarter comes home. If it does then I think you can expect them to meet future quidance and the street will trust the outlook. Reporting date expected to be Feb 21. Good luck

Just wanted to be sure you saw this news. 11 is a double for me but I won't be a seller.

I'm going to bring this up again because earnings are due 2/21 after hours. Read this entire thread because I don't have time to go into detail. The street is looking for revs of 7.5 mil and eps of .10 cents. I believe this company is just getting started but this quarter must prove it to me. Should they hit these numbers and give guidance higher then I will trust this management and add to my position. 06 and 07 could be very good yr on yr growth. No major broker covers this stock and that will change as the rev sources expand . I'm long the stock and if they hit these numbers I think this stock should be in the long term portfolio David. Look at the shares outstanding, the institutional ownership, the rev expansion, the product line, the product development potential, the 6 mo. chart, and the EPS growth. Can the management team deliver? We'll find out. That's the last piece of the puzzle. I've put my money in play and hope I get to double up a winning hand.

I have posted on SMSI since the stock was 5.50. If you haven't looked at it you should. I put the stock in contest 2 and posted in Jan that I thought the 11.03 high was in play. This company has long term potential. It's up 100% from my 1st post but for you fundamentalist I think you can build a strong case from here.

This stock continues to impress me. Up over 100% since I first started talking about it. Take a good look at the fundamentals of this company and I think you'll see a company that has only begun to show its potential. This could be a bigger story in 06-07 than it has been in 05.

I'm still on this horse and will soon attain my 17 target I called on April 1. What has impressed me the most is the great work this stock did in May and June. The company's fundamentals continue to improve and the street following has dramatically increased. I see this company in the mid 20s. I have been amazed that the SOF team didn't pick up on this one months ago> I quit posting on it because I felt I was wasting my time. Stick with this one it's got a great toehold in its sector and IMO has big opportunities over the next 12 months.

KEY POINTS:
Channel checks indicate very strong Music Essentials Kit sales at Verizon
during August. We believe September quarter tracking at least in line with
our estimates and maintain Outperform rating.

* Based on our monthly handset channel checks (see our note entitled
"Monthly Channel Checks: New Products Gaining Traction"), we believe
Verizon accelerated sales of music enabled handsets and Music Essentials
Kits (MEKs) due to the recent launch of LG's Chocolate phone and
promotion of the CDM 8945 music enabled handset from UTStarcom for only
$30 with a free Music Essentials Kit.
* Further, with the back-to-school season, it was clear Verizon store
managers were strongly promoting its V CAST music service and enjoying
strong sales of music-enabled handsets such as the LG Chocolate phone
and the LG VX 8300.
* Our checks indicate Verizon currently offers seven V CAST Music phones
with five of these models launched during Q306, and we expect this
number to continue to grow throughout the remainder of 2006.
* Each phone Verizon offers for its V CAST music service requires its own
unique Smith Micro MEKs, and Smith Micro recognizes revenue on sales of
the kits into the market. While selling MEKs into the channel to support
phone launches could potentially create a future inventory correction,
we believe the Verizon service is in the early stages of strong growth
and do not foresee any near-term inventory issues given our expectations
of ramping music phone models and sales for the remainder of 2006.
* In fact, with our August checks indicating strong sell-through trends
for music enabled handsets, we believe our Smith Micro September quarter
estimates may prove conservative. Please see our August 30 initiation
note entitled "Addressing Wireless Data Growth Areas: Initiating With
Outperform Rating" for more details on our positive investment thesis.

Yesterday a Doji was formed. This shows indecision about the direction of the market and it represents a tug-of-war between buyers and sellers.

The last two candlesticks formed a Bearish (Doji) Star Pattern . This is a bearish reversal pattern that marks a potential change in trend.

Gap of breakaway has been tested and it not filled...Today is a decisive day ! Buyers or sellers ? :) It is a game
Title: Shorting SMSI in the short-term
Post by: vic666 on September 15, 2006, 10:33:21 PM
well...i did short the stock today at $12.85 today afternoon. it broke thru 20 MA..and closed below it.

1.) seems to be heading to 50MA of 12.48 (1st target)

2.) also, the trendline joining the highs from the recent past (see chart), i.e 16.70 and 15.34, should offer a support level right about where it closed today...$12.75 ish...but I think it will be broken on monday, atleast thats where I'm placing my bets on...and it;s no blind bet, coz I see my 2 fav. indicators, the MACD and stochastics, poinitng to a short term downtrend...

3.) also, volume has increased today compared to the last few days...pointing to a build up of gradual selling pressure. also, the market was up today, but SMSI was pretty much in RED all day long. it's time for a breather IMO.

3.) break of the 50 MA at $12.48 should make this retest $11.40 (recent low formed on Aug 24th)..so that's my next target.

4.) if it breaks $11.40, next targte is the 200 MA...should offer strong support at $11.00

ok...my trade has been executed...it's time to stop asking the "WHY" questions, and start lookin at "WHAT" happens with the stock.

no questions once u enter the battlefield. i'll just wait and see WHAT the stock does.  ;)

I haven't posted anything for some time but do stop by to see how all you folks are doing. IMHO this stock should be a long only bias. The fundamentals will drive this stock much higher in the next 12 months. I added to my original position 4 times in august and believe that although shorts can make money those trades will cloud what should be a buy on dips discipline. I bought this stock in the 5's and added twice. Ended up with a three bagger and lost half my position on 14 stop. Hated my self until I had the opportunity to add in Aug again. My point is that had I had a trading mentality with this one I would have not been adding again in the 9's. Yesterday this stock shook off news that has buried some of 3sof stocks. Why? I think it's the fundamentals. Think about how you can get long this for the long term there are 1000's of other great stocks to short. Food for thought. Good trading to you all.

Smith Micro Software "buy"

Wednesday, September 20, 2006 2:26:12 AM ET
Lazard Capital Markets

NEW YORK, September 20 (newratings.com) - Analysts at Lazard Capital reiterate their "buy" rating on Smith Micro Software Inc (ticker: SMSI). The target price is set to $24.

In a research note published yesterday, the analysts mention that QuickLink Mobile is expected to contribute to the company's revenues in 3Q. Smith Micro Software is expected to generate robust revenue growth and healthy gross margins going forward on account of the beginning of a renewal cycle for the Allume consume software products, the analysts say. The company has filed a shelf offering with the SEC, which would enable it to raise capital more quickly in the future, Lazard Capital adds.

Title: Re: SMSI

just FYI (from MyVillage)

Subject:   Nollenberger Capital Partners analyst comments
Sentiment:

We believe that Smith Micro Software offers investors one of the best opportunities to capitalize on the accelerating demand for multimedia mobile data applications. Its software products enable next-generation mobile carriers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and subscribers to leverage the full capabilities of the widening gamut of multimedia communications services.

Key Points

* Despite some volatility in Smith Micro Software's share price over the past
few months, checks with a variety of our industry sources suggest that,
with a little over a week remaining in the quarter, the September quarter
may be tracking somewhat ahead of our original expectations.
* Again, it appears that the business gained momentum across the gamut of the
company's product portfolio throughout 3Q06. With an intra-quarter upgrade
in technology from several of the company's partners, we expect that the
core QuickLink Mobile business has regained its more sustainable growth
path.
* Several of our sources indicate that demand for the company's music
products has been particularly strong during the quarter. We feel that the
catalyst for accelerating demand may be due to several factors, including:
1) a wider array of handset partners with music-capable phones available
for shipment, 2) increased customer marketing of Smith Micro's music
products, and 3) expanding customer and end-user awareness of the value
proposition of leveraging the power of the company's music-focused
software.
* With last week's announced availability of QuickLink Music in conjunction
with CTIA Wireless IT & Entertainment 2006, we expect the company to
experience improving gross margins over the next several quarters as the
music product mix increasingly shifts to include a larger percentage of
QuickLink Music.
* Our checks further suggest that the demand for QuickLink Mobile Enterprise
continues to accelerate. With an already solid base, we expect management
to add new meaningful enterprise customers over the next few quarters. We
believe that sales of the Enterprise product may provide increased
visibility while expanding the global presence of Smith Micro's business.
* Over the next several quarters, we expect to see additional product
enhancements, especially in Smith Micro's compression portfolio. We also
expect that the company may add additional partners to further accelerate
sales of its music products. Earlier this week, management reiterated their
expectation to have multiple music customers by the end of FY06.
* With significant upside opportunities and shares trading at 25x and 18x our
FY06 and FY07 estimates, we reiterate our Buy rating and $20 per share
price target on Smith Micro.

Valuation Our price target of $20 per share is approximately 36x our FY06 EPS estimate. In deriving our price target, we have conservatively used a formula of our FY06 EPS estimate of $0.54 multiplied by approximately 1.0x our somewhat slower 37% earnings growth rate estimate for 2007. Risks to Valuation

* One of the primary risks to the company's growth is the non-linear pattern
sometimes experienced with the deployment of new communications services.
Although we expect there could be some changes in growth rate during the
deployment cycles of some customers, continued customer and product
diversification may mitigate this risk.
* A second potential risk is that the company has maintained significant, but
improving, customer concentration over the past two years. During 2004 and
2005, sales to Verizon Wireless accounted for approximately 68.4% and
57.1%, respectively. We expect that as several of the company's other
customers accelerate their deployments and as new customers are announced
throughout the next 12"18 months, we will see this concentration steadily
decline.
* A final concern that investors may share is the viability of demand for
mobile data applications. We feel that the deployment of high-margin mobile
enhanced services is a necessity for all wireless carriers seeking
profitable growth; consequently, the market's growth will likely continue
to be supported for these carriers' "need to exceed beyond speeds and
feeds."

Zacks update:
Special Situations Rated Strong Buys
With Ian T. Gilson
Oct 02, 2006
As the market appears to reach the top of its current cycle, we went looking for stocks we still felt had room to move up from current levels. In our recent discussion with senior analyst Ian Gilson, Ph.D, CFA, we found two such companies within his "special situation" coverage.

We wanted to speak directly about a couple of Buy-recommended small-cap stocks on which you've recently published reports.

Yes, Amerco (UHAL) and Smith Micro Software (SMSI). These are both "special situation" companies that I cover. I have a good relationship with both companies, and do indeed feel they are good Buy prospects.

......
What are your thoughts on your other company, Smith Micro?
Smith Micro has a long history, going back to the early days of personal computers. It provided to companies – particularly Apple Computer (AAPL) – fax software that allowed you to send faxes from your PC. This software, called QuickLink, reached universal status: it was included in every version of U.S. Robotics' modem and every Apple.
The main issue for Smith Micro over the years was that it always had good research, but unfortunately its products were too early for the market up until a year, year and a half ago. What the company's main product does is allows a cell phone to be used as a modem with a laptop and connect to the Internet or any other service where you get cell phone reception. As the technology in the market has improved, the speed goes up. In the past the market was too slow and expensive, but now there are major self-service providers offering high-speed data service.
Smith Micro has a unique and good relationship with Verizon Wireless, which is 53% owned by Verizon Communications (VZ). Smith Micro supplies a PC phone card – basically just a regular cell phone without a keypad or screen – that plugs into a laptop. Its relationship with Verizon expanded once Verizon offered customers music downloads to cell phones, which is now very popular.
As a result, Smith Micro now has two services to offer clients and potential clients, buttressed by two acquisitions. The first acquisition is quite important: Stuffit, which supplies a compression algorithm. Without getting too technical, basically what a compression algorithm does is take a picture, a JPEG – or an MPEG if it is a movie, normally a huge file if it is not compressed – that can be software loaded or embedded in a cell phone. The Stuffit technology is also 30% more efficient than JPEG compression, so what normally would take 10 minutes to download now only takes seven minutes. Basically, this product makes it realistic to use cell phone linkage to download very large files.

Is this offered just through Verizon, or does the company have many partners?

There are a number of relationships Smith Micro has established, not just with Verizon. One other notable company is Dobson Communications (DCEL), the fourth-largest cellular company, which has a very strong presence in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska. Smith Micro has also struck a deal with the largest independent distributor of Sprint (S) – which has its own product, but it's not that good – so Smith Micro has found a way to attack Sprint's large market through its top independent distributor. So from the use of regular files using QuickLink software, the company has now added music downloads, and through compression algorithms it will now be able to add other products with large files in 2007 and beyond.

Why is this company considered a "special situation"?

Because there is no company similar to it. None of the companies that compete in that space have products as good, and all are parts of larger companies. Smith Micro is unique in that it stands by itself, the only independent in this group. Our Buy recommendation comes with a six-month price target of $18.

In summation, then, what should investors look for from these companies going forward?

In Smith Micro's case, look for new products which will add to revenue growth going forward. Existing products have been fantastic, with growth in excess of 100% in early quarters. Music is very important and will only become more so; I see continuation of 35-40% growth year-over-year in a market that is still growing. I expect at least a five-year growth phase.

In a research note published this morning, the analysts mention that the company's line-up includes Nokia's 63215i and Motorola's KRZR. Smith Micro Shares Jump to Year High
Monday October 30, 2:59 pm ET
Smith Micro Shares Climb to 52-Week High Following Solid Results From Verizon Wireless

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of Smith Micro Software Inc. climbed to their highest level in a year Monday, following solid third-quarter results released by Verizon Wireless, which accounts for a big chunk of the company's sales.
Smith Micro develops and markets wireless communication software and services for uses such as roaming between wireless wide area networks and Wi-Fi hot spots, videoconferencing and sending and getting faxes. Earlier on Monday, Verizon Communications Inc. posted third-quarter earnings above Wall Street's expectations, largely due to outstanding results from its wireless business, which it co-owns with Vodafone Group PLC.
Verizon Wireless added 1.9 million customers during the quarter to a total of 56.7 million, and its sales grew 18 percent to $9.87 billion.
Verizon's wireless data revenue tracks closely with Smith Micro's performance, since it accounts for more than 70 percent of Smith Micro's revenue, wrote Rodman & Renshaw analyst Amit Dayal in a note to investors. Monday's results, he added, "give us confidence that the outlook for SMSI remains positive."
Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based Smith Micro's shares rose $1.44, or 8.5 percent, to $18.33 in afternoon trading on the Nasdaq. Earlier in the session, shares traded as high as $18.60, eclipsing a previous 52-week high of $17.48 set Oct. 16. The stock has tripled since the beginning of the year.

Dayal rates Smith Micro "Market Outperform" with a target price of $20.
Reginal King, an analyst with Nollenberger Capital Partners, expects the company to report a solid third quarter on Wednesday.
"Throughout the quarter, several of our sources indicated that demand for the company's music products were particularly strong," the analyst wrote.
Analysts polled by Thoson Financial, on average, expect earnings of 14 cents per share on sales of $13.4 millio

Hopefully I've helped you longs today. I've been long this stock for a long time and added alot in Aug. Today, acting like an overweighted long I put a stop in on 1/2 my position at 17.24 never thinking I could get wacked. Well I did! I believe I will hate what I've done and am sure that the market will spank me tomorrow with a strong recovery. For those of you who are long I want you to know each time I left my fundamental view for a technical trade on this stock I have been wrong. You'll see that long ago my targets were up at the 18 to 20 levels and I still think this company has great long term prospects. Tomorrow I'll be the one chasing a new long position.

    Third Quarter Financial Discussion:

"Our business continues to prosper across all of our platforms and in our OEM business division we saw a return to a more normalized growth trend for our broadband QuickLink Mobile connectivity product, which helped drive the increase in gross margins for the quarter. We also experienced significant growth with our Music Essential kit, specifically with Verizon Wireless, where we benefited from a strong marketing push and launch of the LG VX8500 Chocolate phone."

Mr. Smith continued, "We launched our QuickLink Music product during the quarter, our new music suite which offers a robust experience allowing wireless carriers the ability to brand their multimedia service offerings from online stores to mobile handsets. It also gives the end users a streamlined installation process, and the seamless operability to integrate music capable phones with a PC. We believe this is a strong launching pad, as we look to expand our wireless carrier customer base with this product in the coming months."

"Our StuffIt Wireless program continues progress on track, with several ongoing prototypes in testing with large handset manufacturers, and a wireless carrier. We see this solution becoming more relevant to the market place as the market continues to evolve every day, with more data moving through the spectrum including music, video, and photos. Specifically, we anticipate video becoming more prominent player as we look to 2007." Mr. Smith continued, "We believe we have positioned the Company very well to benefit from these additional services being offered by the wireless carriers."

Mr. Smith concluded, "In conclusion we remain optimistic about our business outlook, we expect to see a continuation of growth, and believe our recent music success can continue to grow with the launch of QuickLink Music. We believe the company is positioned well as we strive to be a leader in the wireless software space."

Fully diluted shares outstanding as of September 30, 2006 were 25.8 million versus the 23.2 million shares outstanding in the third quarter of 2005.

On a GAAP basis, the company earned $0.09 per fully diluted share for the third quarter of 2006 that compared to $0.08 per fully diluted share in the third quarter of 2005.

Miller Johnson Steichen Kin.

NEW YORK, November 3 (newratings.com) - Analyst Chad Bennett of Miller Johnson Steichen Kinnard downgrades Smith Micro Software Inc (ticker: SMSI) to "market perform," while raising his estimates for the company. The target price has been raised from $17.50 to $18.50.

In a research note published yesterday, the analyst mentions that the downgrade in rating is based on valuation, following the recent appreciation in the company's share price. Smith Micro Software's share price reflects the company's robust 3Q results and raised EPS estimates for FY07 and does not reflect the near-term concerns related to the Connectivity and MEK businesses, the analyst says. The company has reported its 3Q results ahead of the estimates. The EPS estimates for 2006 and 2007 have been raised from $0.54 to $0.61 and from $0.70 to $0.77, respectively.[/color]

Cell-phone gadgetry is just getting started

Wireless providers are stepping up to make your phone an MP3 player, a TV and a full-fledged computer in a new round of phone wars. Three tech providers should be among the big winners.
By Michael Brush

Can you see me now?

Verizon Wireless better be ready to update its "hear me now" catchphrase: Giving folks audio-only cell phones (even with cameras) won't cut it for long. The next round of winners in the cellular world will be the ones offering music and video along with the latest round of whiz-bang new phone functions.

Sorting out the winners will be no easy task, as the competition will be fierce. For investors, figuring out which companies will come out on top could be as lucrative as the last round of cell-phone wars, when companies such as Nokia (NOK, news, msgs) and Qualcomm (QCOM, news, msgs) saw their stock prices as much as double between 2002 and 2004. In a minute, I'll give you my three picks. But first, a little background.

In a minute, I'll give you my three picks. But first, a little background.

Generation next
Verizon Wireless, a joint venture of Verizon Communications (VZ, news, msgs) and Vodafone Group (VOD, news, msgs), got the jump in this latest round of competition by adding YouTube video to its V Cast media service this month. It also signed a deal with Revver, another video-sharing Web site that hosts user-generated content.
The main wireless providers in the U.S. -- Sprint Nextel (S, news, msgs), Cingular Wireless and Verizon Wireless -- all are bumping up cell-phone bandwidth to long-awaited "3G," as in third-generation, technology that can provide video and data transmission at speeds close to that of DSL.
Sprint is rolling out a more sophisticated version of its technology called EV-DO Revision A. It can provide download speeds of up to 800 kilobits per second, compared with speeds of about 500 kilobits per second now.
But the real improvement comes in upload speeds -- a change that will pave the way for two-way video conferencing. Upload speeds should increase to 300 to 400 kilobits per second, from around 50 kilobits per second now. Verizon Wireless is making similar upgrades.
Meanwhile, Cingular is bringing out an improvement to its service called "high-speed downlink packet access." This will increase download speeds to 400 to 700 kilobits per second and upload speeds to 400 to 600 kilobits per second by the end of 2007.
In addition to faster speeds, these upgrades will also bring better-quality service because fewer data packets will drop out.
Cell-phone companies will put in even wider pipes over the next two years, in the form of Wi-Fi and WiMAX. These will support blazing speeds, similar to what you get with cable connections. These higher speeds will bring features such as interactive gaming to cell phones. Embedded wireless connections might let you stream live video straight from your camcorder to relatives who couldn't make it back for the holidays.
"The general message is you start to get a very good broadband capacity either from those two cellular roots or from Wi-Fi and WiMAX," says Nigel Rundstrom, who heads the North American multimedia group at Nokia. "Then many of the services that consumers would like to use become more viable."

But do consumers really want to watch "Gone With the Wind" on their cell phones?

David Owens, the director of product marketing at Sprint, concedes that few people will go for a two-hour movie on a small cell-phone screen. But he thinks most people these days are "video-centric," meaning they prefer to get information through video. And they like short bursts of information in videos lasting a minute or two. "Our belief is there is a tremendous appetite for the one-and-a-half-minute clip on handset," Owens says.
More intriguing is the YouTube phenomenon, says Nokia's Rundstrom. "A lot of the traffic from social-networking sites, whether it is MySpace or Flickr or YouTube, will migrate to mobile phones," he says.
Another popular service will be live broadcast video. Chris White, the director of multimedia-products strategy at Motorola (MOT, news, msgs), thinks that will take about 18 months.
Then there's music. Cell-phone service providers hadn't anticipated the popularity, and profitability, of ring tones, which generated $4 billion for carriers worldwide in 2004.
Now they're hoping for a repeat in music. "We believe that full-song music has a similar, if not a more promising, outlook for the carriers," says Lazard Capital Markets analyst Christin Armacost.
Cell-phone providers aren't waiting for Steve Jobs to release an "iPhone." They already offer several phones that double as music players. Users pay extra for a memory card that can store 500 to 1,000 songs, similar to the capacity of the iPod nano from Apple Computer (AAPL, news, msgs).
Carriers offer music through online shops similar to the Apple's popular iTunes service. But cell-phone users typically buy songs using their desktop computers and then load them into their cell phones. With high-speed cell service, more users will likely download straight to their phones.
What's the best way to play this trend? The cleanest 3G plays are the "arms suppliers" (forgive the tech-bubble speak), the companies selling the technology to make it happen. Lazard Capital Markets' Armacost prefers Qualcomm and two smaller companies, Radvision (RVSN, news, msgs) and Smith Micro Software (SMSI, news, msgs).

Qualcomm
Qualcomm is in the "enviable" position of owning much of the intellectual property behind CDMA, one of the dominant standards in wireless communications, says Morningstar (MORN, news, msgs) analyst John Slack. Qualcomm makes money by designing chips used in CDMA phones and by collecting royalties on other companies' sales of handsets that use CDMA technology.
Qualcomm also recently won a supply contract with Motorola, a deal that means Qualcomm will see a healthy gain in its share of the 3G chip market, says Goldman Sachs (GS, news, msgs) analyst Brantley Thompson.
The transition to 3G technology is a big boost for Qualcomm. The switch will boost demand for both CDMA chips and new 3G-capable handsets.
Next, Qualcomm offers one of two leading technologies supporting mobile video broadcasting, called MediaFLO. Qualcomm scored a victory this year when Verizon Wireless adopted MediaFLO as the platform for its video service. "We believe this high-profile partnership will provide a meaningful catalyst for drawing in other service providers to the MediaFLO platform," says Prudential Equity Group's Inder Singh.
Qualcomm is locked in battle with Nokia, which believes Qualcomm's royalties are too high. Qualcomm is also suing Nokia, claiming patent infringement. Uncertainty about the quagmire has probably shaved $5 off Qualcomm's stock price, says Lazard Capital Markets' Armacost. But she thinks Qualcomm will ultimately prevail -- one reason she has a $58 price target on the stock.

Radvision
Based in Tel Aviv, Israel, Radvision develops and markets components for networking gear used to support video communications over the Internet. For years, Radvision has focused on offering equipment for traditional videoconferences.
This year, the company has seen rapid growth in sales of network gateways that support videoconferencing through 3G mobile phones and on desktop computers. These segments account for about a third of Radvision revenue, and they will grow by about 85% and 50% next year, Armacost says. "As we move into 2007, we expect to see some larger-scale 3G video deployments in Europe and Asia and a number of initial trials in North America," she says.
Radvision boasts an impressive list of partners, including Alcatel Lucent (ALU, news, msgs), Nokia, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ, news, msgs) and Siemens (SI, news, msgs). Radvision, whose stock trades for about $20, has around $4 per share in cash and no debt. It produced healthy operating cash flow of $3.7 million in third quarter, and it is buying back stock.

Smith Micro Software
Smith Micro sells software that helps manage the flow of digital content to wireless devices such handsets and laptops connected to carrier networks. Its software is used on wireless modem cards. But Smith Micro also has several stand-alone software products that help manage digital content on your cell phone.
One is called Music Essentials Kit. It's a system for downloading music from online stores to your desktop, managing play lists and transferring music to handsets. Another is a line of compression technology offerings called StuffIt that help reduce the size of digital files such as photos. Smith Micro's largest customer is Verizon Wireless -- both a blessing and a curse. Verizon's success with V Cast and its rollout of 3G mobile phone service is a plus. But Smith Micro gets about 70% of its revenue from Verizon Wireless. That's risky because you don't want companies you invest in to be too dependent on any single customer.
But Armacost thinks Smith Micro will widen its customer base and continue to grow earnings at a double-digit pace for several years. So she has a $24 price target on the stock, which recently traded for $16.

fyI:

Greetings,

The Fool one-on-one with Bill Smith, et. al. was overcome by events. I was able to attend his briefing, participate in a breakout session with six other analysts, and spend about five minutes with him in the hallway. I also talked briefly with a couple of the analysts. I also met the Think Equities analyst that covers them and am instigating an e-mail discussion of the company with him. I'll post periodically when new info warrants an update. Bubba Tom has been following these guys for awhile and I've often relied on his fine posts to educate myself on the company. Now that I've heard the story first hand and live, I figured I'd give everyone my impressions. Some of this is inferred impression, so please take it as it is intended.

If you invest in this company beyond the numbers they release, you are betting on Bill Smith. He has his story and he is sticking with it. He is very tight lipped beyond what he wants to say and gets obstinate when someone insists on drilling down any further. The CFO seemed a little more forthcoming in the breakout session but Mr. Smith would cut him off and say, "This is what we are saying about that". This stance didn't particularly bother me, but it clearly didn't set well with some of the analysts. At one point they were repeatedly asking questions to determine unit pricing on Music Essentials and Mr. Smith finally just told them the calculation they should use to estimate this based on numbers that had been released. There is definitely some tension here. I think this is a high risk / high reward call for these analysts and they really want to get it right. He's making them work for it. This was probably the most animated of any of the breakout sessions I attended and clearly Quicklink Music was the issue on everyone's mind. I finally broke in and asked about StuffIt Wireless with about three minutes left on the clock. This got Bill Smith back on track and he laid out the situation a little. I'll expound on this a little more in a minute. After the breakout, he came up to me and thanked me for letting him end on a high note. I guess I'm brown nosing already. I talked to him a few minutes and I'll include that in what follows. I can guarantee that all those sophisticated questions about future Stuff-It applications that some of you posted on the board were not in the cards. I asked him about licensing to content providers or other application providers and it was clear that any of that is quite away down the road.

Like many growth stories, it is easy to get anxious and get way ahead of any realistic adoption curve. These things take time and rollouts will be measured in years. That doesn't mean that the company won't continue to grow extremely fast, it just means that calculating the yearly royalties on 1B handsets and determining that SMSI should be priced at $200 is jumping way ahead of ourselves. Just so you know what I mean, SMSI will get about $0.25 per handset for StuffIt. At 1B handsets per year, this is $250M in royalties or $10/share. At a multiple of 20, this puts the SMSI share price at $200 neglecting all of their other products. Let's dial it back and look at where they actually are today.

Let me talk about their source of revenue today. Their consumer software business contributes 20%. This consists of desktop applications such as StuffIt, Spring Cleaning, Internet Cleanup, and FAXstf. Most of this came to the company through the Allume acquisition. Another 70-75% of their revenue comes from Verizon. This is for Music Essentials and QuickLink Mobile. The final 5-10% comes from other carriers for QuickLink Mobile and a smattering of revenue from QuickLink Mobile Enterprise, which is just now getting off the ground. In the most recent quarter, Music Essentials became their largest revenue-producing product and Verizon is currently the sole customer in this area.

QuickLink Mobile is their data connectivity product. It is sold in three ways. First as a handset application, second as a WiFi plug-in application for laptops, and thirdly as an embedded application in WiFi ready PCs. Verizon uses SMSI and I believe this partnership is secure because of the enormous costs and hassle that Verizon would encounter if they decided to switch horses in mid-stream. Sprint/Nextel uses their own home-brewed software and Cingular uses a competing product from PCTel. SMSI also has agreements with seven or eight smaller carriers throughout the world.

QuickLink Mobile Enterprise is a server-based application that allows companies to data-enable their entire work force. It covers both wireless LAN and WiFi scenarios and has built-in security features that allow employees to access their corporate networks wirelessly from anywhere via cell phone or laptop. They have six customers signed up and are actively selling this product. They focus their in-house sales force on large customers needing thousands of seats and use OEMs selling managed mobility to reach smaller customers. They take revenue on sales on a pro-rated 12 month basis going forward following a sale, so revenues will build gradually. We should watch the deferred revenue account on the balance sheet to measure the volume of business here going forward.

Music Essentials is a connectivity product that allows the user to organize playlists on their computer for download to their music-enabled Verizon V-cast cell phones. This product is their hottest property currently. There is also a good chance that other carriers will pick up this product, as there isn't any real competition currently. There will be eventually. Analysts expect cell phones to surpass iPods and other standalone devices for mobile music by the middle of 2009. There is a lot that can happen between now and then, but this area looks really good for SMSI currently. The application uses a version of Windows Media for the PC interface. It does the job but could be better. This is where QuickLink Music comes in.

QuickLink Music is the hot topic of the day. This product was made possible by the PhoTags acquisition and is what all the analysts are watching. This product runs on a PC and allows the carrier to take full control of their users' multimedia experience. It has a new interface and is reportedly, every bit as functional and easy to use as iTunes. This will allow the carriers to set up their own Music Store and gain the revenue from the original download that currently goes to Apple or some other provider. It has utilities for organizing, storing, and manipulating songs on the computer. It also has a "quick-look" feature that tells you how many more songs your phone can store. It looks pretty slick from the screenshots I saw. They have no current customers. Bill Smith has been saying they will have a customer by the end of September and multiple customers by the end of the year. He stood by those statements, but allowed that the first signing might end up being in early October. This will be very important to watch play out as it will validate the company's assertions that the carriers are very interested. Most of the breakout session was taken up by analysts trying to pin SMSI down on pricing for this product and expected ramp rates. This is where Mr. Smith refused to give any information and it got a little heated. This area should be monitored closely by those interested in SMSI.

StuffIt Wireless and StuffIt Image are products that have resulted from the Allume acquisition. This is the 900-pound gorilla in the room and will be a 2007 and beyond story. They can losslessly compress JPEG by a further 30% and it is envisioned that this will become a standard in digital cameras and camera-enabled cell phones in the future. One can imagine all sorts of other applications, but this is all putting the cart before the horse. When they went to the handset manufacturers, the Holy Grail was being able to compress all the native phone resources, cramming more services into a smaller memory profile. They are currently trialing this concept with a couple of companies according to Mr. Smith. I think they have a tiger by the tail here, but we have to wait and see if they can monetize it.

I think I've probably gone on for long enough. I really like this company and what they are doing. I can see them at much higher prices in the future. The problem is that with all current information, they are fully priced and assuming that things go pretty well. These kinds of companies tend toward the more highly speculative end of the spectrum. I'm in, but I'm not buying more at these prices until I see more material contracts signed. This is a company, which if successful, will never have appeared to have been a deal. If you are following along, watch for new customer deals, and ride the wave if you have the courage.

Regards,
Stan

Smith Micro to Acquire Ecutel Systems, Inc. Bringing Seamless Network Roaming and Secure Connectivity to Enterprise Customers
Tuesday February 6, 9:00 am ET
Smith Micro's QuickLink Mobile in Combination With Ecutel's IPRoam Will Deliver a New Class of Connection Manager Solutions for PCs and Smart Devices

ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Feb. 6 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Smith Micro Software, Inc. (Nasdaq: SMSI - News), a developer and marketer of a wide range of software and services for the wireless market, today announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire privately held Ecutel Systems, Inc., a pioneering developer of standards-based, secure enterprise mobility software solutions. Ecutel's industry leading products, IPRoam and Viatores, provide seamless mobile security to all facets of the enterprise mobile workforce.

The integration of IPRoam and Viatores with Smith Micro's QuickLink Mobile Enterprise connection manager, will allow for a unique connectivity solution that will offer the IT marketplace always-on and secure WWAN (Wireless Wide Area Network) and Wi-Fi (Wireless Local Area Network) connections for mobile users.

"Ecutel's technology is the perfect compliment to our enterprise connectivity strategy and demonstrates our continuous commitment to increasing our business in the enterprise market and providing our existing customers with next-generation connectivity solutions," said William W. Smith, Jr., Smith Micro's President and CEO. "In addition to strengthening our enterprise product offering, we believe this acquisition will broaden our product footprint into the security and device management sectors, allowing us to deliver products that appeal to customers in this high-growth market."

In addition to integrating IPRoam functionality, Smith Micro plans to integrate into its QuickLink Mobile Enterprise product features from Ecutel's IC2 -- a remote enterprise system management solution that enables IT professionals to securely manage their network appliances, servers, and users from any handheld device using any available network. Organizations will now gain full control of their wireless network management functions, and reduce the costs associated with maintaining high levels of system and network uptime.

IPRoam is a client-server software solution that enables seamless network roaming and session persistence, providing mobile workers with always-on, secure wireless access to their enterprise resources, thus solving the critical problems that have long hindered the adoption of true workforce mobility in the enterprise. IPRoam enables roaming and session persistence by using Mobile IP, and additionally adds VPN security for laptops and handheld mobile devices.

Ecutel's EASi agent and policy server is integrated with IPRoam to add borderless endpoint security for mobile devices. Enterprise network administrators can establish, manage and enforce policies for security, access control and device management -- ensuring mobile computing devices are protected and network access policies are continuously enforced for mobile devices connecting to the corporate network.

Pursuant to the terms of the agreement, Smith Micro will purchase Ecutel for $8 million in cash. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions and is expected to close in February 2007.

Smith Micro has extensive experience in developing innovative software solutions for the wireless industry. Its leading-edge products simplify communications access over both Wireless Wide Area Networks (WWANs) and Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs). Over 5 million licenses of Smith Micro's QuickLink Mobile technology have been shipped in just the last several years, making QuickLink Mobile the preferred choice of carriers and end-users alike.

Investor's Business Daily
Software Maker Rings Up Music For Cell Phones, Taking On Apple
Wednesday March 7, 7:00 pm ET
Marilyn Alva

The volume is turning up for Smith Micro Software's wireless music business.

Since January 2006, when it launched its Music Essentials kit, Smith's (NasdaqGM:SMSI - News) wireless music business has become its No. 1 sales line. It got a boost in late November when prime customer Verizon Wireless made available Smith's new add-on feature, QuickLink Music Manager.
Music Essentials includes software and hardware and allows users to connect their handsets with their personal computers. The new QuickLink manager is all high-margin software. It lets handset users build and manage their music files.
"Smith provides a user interface for managing music in a similar fashion to iTunes, the 800-pound gorilla" said Anton Wahlman, an analyst with ThinkEquity Partners. His firm co-managed a secondary offering for Smith in December.

ITunes Competitor

"As far as I can see, the Smith Micro product is the first to seriously compete against Apple's (NasdaqGS:AAPL - News) iTunes," Wahlman said.
QuickLink kicked in only about a month or so of revenue in Smith's fourth quarter. But it was a factor in Smith's 169% jump in revenue vs. the year-earlier quarter. Of the $17.2 million in fourth-quarter revenue, music from handsets chimed in to the tune of $8.6 million. That was up from $3.9 million in the first quarter. Much of the rest comes from cable kits and data connectivity products.
Music's in the air. Apple recently said it would bring out the music handset iPhone with partner Cingular Wireless.
Rather than harm Smith, industry watchers say Apple's entry would likely help it. "It would be healthy for the industry as a whole," said James Alexander, an analyst with Jefferies & Co.
Smith execs don't seem too alarmed. "In our minds, the iPhone is just validating the music side of the handset business," said Bruce Quigley, vice president of investor relations. "We welcome that." Smith would also welcome more customers. Other than an Israeli carrier, Verizon Wireless is Smith's only music customer. Verizon also buys Smith's PC connectivity cable kits. Verizon Wireless made up 74% of Smith's revenue in the fourth quarter.
While such a high concentration of sales in one customer is always a risk, analysts say Verizon Wireless isn't likely to leave Smith in the lurch anytime soon.  It's not a bad customer to have. "Verizon is very serious about its music initiative," Alexander said. "It has a lot of advertising spending behind it and Smith Micro is benefiting from that." It's only a matter of time before other customers sign on, some say. Smith's music applications "have unlimited appeal," writes analyst Kevin Dede of Merriman Curhan Ford. "Carrier interest is very high in light of device convergence." Smith execs say they are working to broaden their customer base to include other carriers as well as handset operators. New-customer announcements are in the future, they promise.
In Smith's fourth-quarter earnings report Feb. 28, CEO William Smith said, "We have only begun to touch the surface of the opportunity that lies ahead of us."
Smith's purchase in early February of Ecutel, a security software firm, and its pending buy of Insignia Solutions' assets mean cross-selling opportunities, analysts say. Though Insignia has been struggling to stay afloat, it will bring new wireless data services to Smith's product mix and sales reps in South Korea and Sweden.

Opportunity

Those new selling opportunities wouldn't likely end on a music note. Insignia's ties with 25 wireless operators could translate into sales for Smith's music, image and data applications, writes analyst Dede. In addition, Smith is working to retool its image-compression technology for the wireless market. Known as StuffIt, it hasn't generated much if any revenue. But the company is working to change that. In the recent conference call, CEO Smith said the firm is in "deep discussions" with handset makers to design StuffIt compression solutions into their mobile phones. "They have a number of technologies in the background that have the potential to be a game changer," said Alexander, of Jefferies & Co. He noted that Smith has a trial under way with one handset operator to further compress JPEG files for picture messaging.

Not Just Music

"Smith will make software for other stuff besides music, like pictures and video," analyst Wahlman said. "They're working on it, and they will have something this year." And with $60 million in hand from the December offering, Smith execs are on the prowl to buy new technology and businesses -- especially in wireless.
"We are very focused on becoming, without a doubt, the absolute dominant player in the worldwide wireless software business," CEO Smith said in the call. "And anybody (who) doubts this, they are fooling themselves."
If and when that will happen is still an open question. After nearly tripling last year, Smith's earnings are estimated to rise 26% this year to 87 cents a share, according to a poll by Thomson Financial.

Analysts expect earnings to grow 20% in 2008.

Smith Micro Bags Sprint
By Scott Moritz
Senior Writer
3/9/2007 2:50 PM EST
URL: http://www.thestreet.com/newsanalysis/businessnews/10343567.html

Smith Micro (SMSI) has bagged another big wireless telco customer.

The Aliso Viejo, Calif., maker of devices that transfer media like music between computers and mobile phones is in the final stages of signing a supply agreement with Sprint Nextel (S) , say people familiar with the deal.

Representatives from Smith Micro and Sprint declined to comment.

Though shares sold off Friday, Smith Micro's stock has surged in the past month. Driving the rally have been stronger-than-expected fourth-quarter numbers and the growing assumption that the company's music kits will gain popularity as phone companies try to answer the looming threat of the Apple (AAPL) iPhone, which AT&T's (T) Cingular is planning to sell. The company's Music Essentials product has been popular in recent months with Verizon Wireless, a joint venture between Verizon (VZ) and Vodafone (VOD) . In fact, last quarter's blowout numbers had a lot to do with Verizon. Sales to the No. 2 wireless giant accounted for $12.7 million, or 74% of total revenue in the fourth quarter for Smith Micro, executives said on an earnings conference call last month. Smith Micro's music kit is seen by some industry observers as one of the leading alternatives to Apple's iTunes application. Like iTunes, Smith Micro's kit attempts to be a seamless music management program that allows users to download things like songs and ringtones wirelessly from phone company as well as move playlists back and forth between phones and computers.

Gadget fans say the success of Apple's iPod was built on its simple and effective music management software. This is an area where cell phones have suffered and outfits like Apple stand to make considerable improvements.
"Sprint and Verizon are going to get more aggressive to compete with AT&T's iPhone," says Rich Church, referring to the June arrival of Apple's iPod-inspired mobile phone. To date, most of the phone companies have required customers to handle most of these tasks using the phone companies' software. But critics say the services have been lacking. Verizon Wireless, for example, runs VCast, a media store accessible by PC or cell phone. Songs can be downloaded to phones for $2. But users have to download the song again if they want it on their PCs. Now, with the Music Essentials kit, users can sync songs on both devices. Analysts say Smith Micro gives telcos a music tool to tune up for the competition.

On a conference call with analysts, Smith Micro CEO Bill Smith said Apple's influence on the market would be good for his company.
"It has been very intriguing to watch some of the comments coming out of Sprint with regard to how they view the iPhone and Cingular's launch," Smith said. "Obviously it's going to create a buzz, and that's very, very good for us."

Smith Micro shares were down $1.02, or 6%, to $16.77 Friday.

Near Term Upside Appears Limited - Downgrading To Hold

Investment Summary
We believe Verizon is working down inventory of Windows XP SMSI products before launching its Vista supported products. Combined with a recent lull in new music devices at Verizon, near term revenue upside appears limited; a scenario that we believe could also limit upside to the stock from current levels.

Full UBS report

1.Verizon Wireless moving to Vista-enabled Music Essentials Kits
With the roll out of the vista operating system, Verizon Wireless is transitioning to vista-compatible kits. While we believe SMSI software is ready, software from a few of its partners and then testing is likely to be required.

2.Verizon likely incentivized in 2Q07; Still comfortable with 1Q07 estimates.
We believe VZW is incentivized to push for timely delivery particularly with the upcoming launch of Apple's Iphone at cingular. While VZW was likely working through existing windows xp compatible music essentials kits stock in 1Q07, we remain comfortable with our1Q07 revenue and EPS estimate of $17.4mn & .17cents respectively.

3. 2Q07 impact dependent upon timely delivery; comfortable with full year
We believe 2Q07 could be impacted if the kits are not ready in a timely manner. By our estimates, .4-1millin in VZW music revenue (current forcast is 8.7milln) would impact EPS by .01, all else equal (opex, estimated kit gross margin of 50%) We remain comfortable with our 2007 est of 84.2mill in revs and .86 in EPS, with potential for upside from sprint and sybase, particularly in 2008.

4. Valuation: reiterate Buy 2 and $23 target
While this could pose an overhang, we believe this issue should be limited to the near term. SMSI reports on may 2. Our $23 target is based on 22x our 2008 pro-forma EPS estimate (ex. options) of $1.04.

Great analysis La-onda and coverage.

Do you think that the fall was purely short attack after Jeffries or do you think earnings may be light in future as inventory worked down?

I thought that with Smith Micxro having VIsta related products they are covered in the future.

I have seen before Smith Micro played even when the earnings have been huge. This is one stock that is always played. Interested about your take.

Agreed - great analysis la-onda.  I'm new to the idea of shorting and how to use that information to understand market interest.  If by saying the shorts need to cover in about 4 days, does that mean they're speculating that the price will drop prior to the 1Q earnings but that it won't necessarily drop after May 2?  Clearly the short interest and your analysis of how long they need to cover are related, but I'm too dumb to understand why.
Title: Re: SMSI

Short Interest Definition:

The total number of shares of a security that have been sold short and not yet repurchased. Some investors consider rising short interest a near term bullish indicator, since those shares represent imminent buy orders.

Days To Cover Definition:
A measurement of a company's issued shares that are currently shorted, expressed as the number of days required to close out all of the short positions. The number is calculated by dividing the aggregate short interest on a stock for the month by the average daily share volume for the same period. Also referred to as the "short-interest ratio". If a stock's price begins to rise significantly, investors who have short sold the stock will quickly begin to close out their positions (by purchasing shares off the open market), thus creating buying pressure for the stock and driving the price up even further. If a previously lagging stock turns very bullish, the buying action of short sellers can result in extra upward momentum for a stock and increased losses for short sellers who are slow to close out their positions. The longer the days to cover, the more pronounced this effect can be.

hope this helps  ;)

la-onda - I see.  So your statement was just that - a statement.  I was hoping for your own personal commentary on the matter, but what it amounts to is, that increasing short interest is still speculation on the part of longs AND shorts.  If the earnings call comes out positive, the momentum from shorts guessing wrong could make the stock go way up.  If the stock turns down, then they'll benefit from longs selling their shares.

"The first quarter was marked by continued execution on many key objectives for the Company," said William W. Smith, Jr., President and CEO of Smith Micro Software, Inc. "We made significant progress with our business case within our Multimedia business segment by signing both IUSACELL, one of Mexico's leading technology mobile operators, and one of the largest domestic wireless carriers, Sprint, for our solution to drive its new music data plan. We see these new relationships as a significant step in the Company's commitment to broaden and diversify our customer base.

We believe our solution is uniquely attractive as it provides the handset manufacturer a strong return on investment, while providing the end users an enhanced experience. We continue to have discussions with several other large handset manufacturers and look to announce additional wins in the future."

Mr. Smith concluded, "We are pleased that our QuickLink Mobile solution had another strong quarter, and we see market trends favoring continued growth in this area as the CDMA carriers roll out the EVDO-REV A service, and the GSM carriers move to HSDPA. We expect to expand and diversify our customer base, pursue new markets opportunities, and continue to build upon our leadership position in the wireless software space."

Issuer: Smith Micro Software, Incorporated (NasdaqNM: SMSI)
Analyst Firm:  Rodman & Renshaw
Ratings Action: DOWNGRADE
Current Rating: Mkt Perform (from Outperform)
Analyst Comments: In the firm's opinion, Verizon's demands for Vista compatible offerings from SMSI pressured Q1 results and may lead to weaker 2007 performance.
Smith Micro Software downgraded to "market perform" - update
In a research note published this morning, the analyst mentions that the company has reported its 1Q07 revenues short and pro-forma EPS ahead of the estimates. The revenue shortfall is due to a decline in revenues towards the end of the quarter due to Vista-related compatibility issues, the analyst says. Smith Micro Software's share price has declined in the recent past due to concerns surrounding Vista compatibility issues, a trend which is expected to continue in the near term, Rodman & Renshaw adds.

Analyst Comments: Key capabilities and partnerships uniquely position Smith Micro with wireless network operators, OEMs, and enterprises, in the firm's view. They noted Smith's great experience in data connectivity has translated to other applications, such as music and enterprise connectivity over wireless networks. Strong 3G wireless subscriber growth and acceptance of 3G related applications provide the backdrop for continued growth. The firm believes Wall Street's opinion of Smith Micro is wrongfully embroiled over the Vista issue. Earlier this year, not all handsets had the drivers necessary to communicate with Microsoft's new operating system, critical for sharing files between the PC and the handset. Now resolved, they believe Smith shares should trade toward their $20 price target based on 20x their $1.00 FY08 EPS estimate.

UBS Investment Research
Smith Micro Software Inc.

Believe Music Essentials Kit Testing Complete; Expect Builds to Start & Ship

Believe Music Essentials Kit approvals granted
We believe Verizon Wireless (VZW) has finished testing for Music Essentials Kits for most handsets, which should now give the green light for builds to start and ship. Software could potentially be available online before retail boxes hit store shelves (kits are likely shipped to distribution centers first, similar to handsets, and then distributed to stores). SMSI records revenue on transfer to title.

Should quell investor concerns regarding further potential delays
We view recent share weakness as a reflection of investor concern over the potential impact of delayed shipments on Q2 revenue as well as fears of further delays. We believe completion of testing should now alleviate these fears and believe most Street estimate for Q2 adequately reflect the potential impact.

With better visibility to shipment timing, adjusting estimates
We are adjusting our Q2 revenue estimate to $15.5mn from $17.5mn and pro forma EPS to $0.15 from $0.18. We are adjusting our pro forma 2007 EPS estimate to $0.95 from $0.98 but still remain above Consensus of $0.85.

$23 target based on ~22x 2008 pro-forma EPS (ex. Options) of $1.02

Reiterate Buy-2 particularly w/VZW issue nearing completion & potential upside to Street Consensus given our expectation for strong Q3 guidance.

Out of the Gate: Smith Micro Rises
Friday , June 22, 2007 11:37ET
By Staff Reporter

NEW YORK, Jun 22, 2007 (AP via COMTEX) -- Shares of Smith Micro Software Inc., which makes wireless communication software products, soared in Friday morning trading, after a ThinkEquity Partners analyst said he expected the share price to double over the next year.

Analyst Anton Wahlman expects Smith Micro to gain as cellular carriers roll out new products around the time Apple Inc. lauches its highly anticipated iPhone on June 29 in the U.S.
"We continue to believe Verizon Wireless would like to have an immediate response to the iPhone by AT&T, and that Smith Micro will be a major beneficiary of this competitive effort," Wahlman wrote. Wahlman said Smith Micro shares are undervalued and expects the share price to double over the next 12 months, with material gains during the balance of 2007.

Wahlman has a "Buy" rating on the shares and a $25 price target.

Shares jumped $1.57, or 12.5 percent, to $14.17 in morning trading.

Smith Micro Software (NASDAQ: SMSI)
The Vista MEK Issue Appears to Be Over - Upgrading
to Buy.
Investment Summary
Verizon appears to have softened its stance on the XP/Vista issue.
We also believe SMSI should directly benefit from Sprint and Verizon's competitive response to Apple's iPhone. While the QCOM patent issue remains unresolved, we believe SMSI's risk/reward profile is compelling at 15x 2008 earnings.
Event
Upgrading SMSI to Buy from Hold and raising price target to $20 from $14. We are raising our estimates slightly to reflect a softer approach to the XP/Vista issue by Verizon. We now believe SMSI will report Q2'07 results that are in line to slightly above our estimates.
Key Points
• Checks indicate Verizon has completed MEK Vista testing for several high volume handsets. With testing completed on these handsets, shipments should begin any day now. With only 6 days remaining in Q2'07, the impact to the quarter will likely be modest with revenue in line to slightly better than our $14.7MM estimate.
• We believe Verizon has softened its overall stance on the XP/Vista issue. Testing has not been completed for all handsets and in some cases Vista drivers are still not available. Given low MEK channel inventory levels, we believe Verizon will now accept normalized shipment levels of legacy XP MEK units.
• New Vista MEKs could include a bundled copy of QL Music. We think Verizon could take the opportunity to bundle the QL Music Manager inside Vista compatible MEKs. This could  significantly improve the activation attach rate vs. the current download method.
• We believe Verizon and Sprint are developing a strong response to the iPhone. Our checks indicate Verizon and Sprint have lined up an impressive portfolio of new music-enabled
handsets slated for launch in time for the Q4 holiday season.
• A prolonged patent dispute between Qualcomm and Broadcom could delay new music handsets. While this is a clear risk for SMSI, we don't believe these delays should dramatically impact Sprint and Verizon's music marketing efforts.
• Raising estimates slightly. Our Q2'07 estimates remain unchanged at $14.7MM/14c. Our 2007 estimates move up to $77MM/84c, from $76MM/83c. Our 2008 estimates move up to
$109MM/$1.00, from $107MM/98c previously.
Valuation/Risks
Our $20 price target is based on 20x our 2008 pfEPS estimate of $1.00. Risks include: 74% revenue concentration at Verizon, fluctuating margins, possibly dilutive acquisitions and potential for new handset delays from a prolonged QCOM (Buy, $42.99) / BRCM (Buy, $30.52) patent dispute.

SMSI: Device Day Uncovers One Who Will Sing the Last Tune
Friday , June 29, 2007 17:55ET

Friday's action was dominated with news regarding hand held devices. The session, termed 'Device Day' by many saw the introduction of Apple's iPhone and Research in Motion's superb earnings release. Both stocks performed well while Palm Inc.'s Treo was the loser.
RIMM noted Thursday that its fiscal first-quarter earnings grew 73% due to increased sales and subscriber additions. The Company also announced a 3 for 1 stock split while rival Palm reported a 43% plunge in fiscal fourth-quarter profit amid sharply rising costs.
The new entrant has some worried, namely Palm, but they've noted that they won't dwell on Apple iPhone sales figures. Reasearch in Motion's Blackberry is more of a corporate device rather than a consumer product and is available in a multitude of countries under many carriers. The iPhone will only be available in the U.S. for now and has a 5 year exclusive agreement with AT&T. It will certainly allow for the carrier to take customers from others, but Blackberry users aren't expected to switch to the iPhone at a rate as high as other smartphone users.
The initial response from consumers could be to raise awareness of music capable phones. The awareness will evolve into other phone makers developing music solutions for wireless handsets.

The real winner from the introduction of the iPhone could be a different company all together. Smith Micro Software, Incorporated (SMSI) is a developer of innovative communications software for the wireless industry. Their leading-edge mobility products simplify communications access over both Wireless Wide Area Networks (WWANs) and Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), and their compression technologies such as StuffIt have been established as industry standards. One of the Company's main products is software that sounds familiar to anyone who has ever heard of the iPod. The Music Essentials program allows people to download music from the Internet onto their PCs and then zip those tunes over to a handheld device. The difference is that the device is a phone and not an iPod.

The Company already has a deal with Verizon Wireless with the company being the first to release phones with SMSI software. Following that deal in November, the Music Essentials product became the largest for SMSI. The Company has a multitude of analysts covering the name with 8 having a buy or strong buy rating. The latest, JP Morgan, noted that the iPhone would spur Verizon and Sprint to release competitive phones and ramp up orders for the Company's media solutions. With the huge amount of attention the iPhone has received, other carriers are expected to release more phones with the music playing capability in the second half of the year. With that in mind following the Company's second earnings in the latter part of July, the Company could become a name to follow with the product offering of cellular makers expanding. Investors would be wise to watch.

"We are very pleased with the overall results for the third quarter, including record revenues," said William W. Smith Jr., President and CEO of Smith Micro Software, Inc. "As expected, our Multimedia division, which was slightly impacted in Q2, bounced back with a strong performance for the quarter."

Mr. Smith continued, "We are also pleased with the continued progress that we have made with our growth strategies for our Connectivity & Security product solution, where we added two new wireless carriers recently, giving us a strong indicator of a healthy data connectivity market as more wireless carriers seek to introduce wireless data connectivity services for their customers in the United States. In addition, contributions from the Compression & Consumer business unit remain strong and the demand for our exclusive republishing products, especially the launch of VMware Fusion contributed to our record Q3 performance. As we announced at the beginning of Q3, we have expanded our multimedia product line with the development of Revue, our newest multimedia product designed for Smartphones running Windows Mobile, one of the fastest growing segments of the Smartphone marketplace. We view this new Smith Micro branded product as an exciting opportunity to reach and significantly expand our customer base in our consumer and OEM segments."Mr. Smith concluded, "Continued strong performance from our diversified business units led to our record quarter results, and we believe that Smith Micro is uniquely positioned to continue to build upon our leadership role in the fast growing wireless software marketplace, leveraging the strength of our technological capability, and capitalize on our retail marketing expertise."

Financial Discussion:

Smith Micro reported net revenues of $20.4 million for the third quarter ended September 30, 2007, a 38% increase when compared to the $14.8 million reported in the third quarter of 2006. On a GAAP basis, the Company earned $0.02 per diluted share for the third quarter of 2007, compared to $0.09 per diluted share for the third quarter of 2006. Non-GAAP net income (which excludes amortization of intangible assets from acquisitions, stock-based compensation expenses and non-cash tax expense) for the third quarter was $6.7 million, or $0.21 per diluted share, compared net income of $4.3 million or $0.17 per diluted share for the third quarter of 2006. Diluted shares outstanding as of September 30, 2007 increased to 31.4 million as compared to 25.8 million shares outstanding as of September 30, 2006.

For the nine months ended September 30, 2007, the Company reported record net revenues of $53.4 million; a 43% increase over the $37.2 million reported for the nine months ended September 30, 2006. GAAP net income for the nine months ended was $2.5 million, or $0.08 per diluted share, compared to $5.3 million or $0.21 per diluted share.

Non-GAAP net income for the nine months ended September 30, 2007 was $18.1 million, an increase of 73% when compared to the Non-GAAP net income of $10.4 million, or $0.42 per share, reported for the nine months ended September 30, 2006.

Total cash and cash equivalents at September 30, 2007 increased to $83.0 million, compared to $34.9 million for the 2006 third quarter ended September 30, 2006.

The Company uses a non-GAAP reconciliation of net income and earnings per share in the presentation of financial results in this press release. Management believes that this presentation may be more meaningful in analyzing our income generation, since amortization of intangibles from acquisitions, stock-based compensation, and non-cash tax expense are excluded from the non-GAAP earnings calculation. This presentation may be considered more indicative of our ongoing operational performance. The tables below present the differences between non-GAAP earnings and net income on an absolute and per share basis. Non-GAAP financial measures should not be considered in isolation from, or as a substitute for, financial information presented in compliance with GAAP, and the non-financial measures as reported by Smith Micro Software may not be comparable to similarly titled amounts reported by other companies.

In a research note published this morning, the analysts mention that the company has posted robust 3Q results, with revenues and EPS ahead of the estimates. Although the rebound of the company's multimedia business is a good sign, product transition challenges at Verizon could exert pressure on Smith Micro Software's top-line growth in 2008, the analysts say. The company appears poised to benefit from the ongoing expansion of wireless data, music and multimedia, although there is lack of clarity regarding the rate at which this might take place, Montgomery & Co adds. The EPS estimates for 2007 and 2008 have been reduced from $0.82 to $0.80 and from $0.73 to $0.69, respectively.

Ratings Action: DOWNGRADE
Current Rating: Neutral (from Buy)
Analyst Comments: The firm is downgrading the rating on SMSI shares based on their belief that the changing industry dynamics, customer concentration and potential dilutive acquisition/integration risk outweighs the company's in-line 3Q07. Trading at an EV-to-revenue multiple of 4x (FY08), they believe that the market has priced in Smith Micro's leading edge wireless application prospects. They recommend that investors remain on the sidelines until the company's acquisition strategy becomes clear given the changing wireless industry fundamentals and reliance on basically one carrier for the majority of revenue.

Motley Fool:
Despite such support, Smith Micro's stock has fallen by half since it released a weak earnings report at the end of last month, in which costs rose even as revenue increased. It's got a strong relationship with Verizon  (NYSE: VZ). However, since Verizon brings in some 67% of the company's revenue, the wireless provider poses potential risks should it slow or halt spending. But with Smith Micro's new multimedia software being introduced for smartphones, Fools are looking for the company to rebound.

More than 700 CAPS investors have rated Smith Micro, with 97% believing it will ultimately outperform the market. CAPS player aprato64 believes the sell-off has been overplayed and that the company, with a strong balance sheet, should be able to prosper:
Stock has been ridiculously beaten down since Q3 '07 earnings. They have no debt, millions in cash which they can use to acquire complementary companies without financing. Strong relationship with Verizon. Music is not the future of this company ... it's the software, particularly StuffIt Wireless. Good [acquisition] strategy. I really believe this will be an earnings monster. Disclosure: I own shares of SMSI.

Another CAPS player, Ebbs23, sees Smith Micro's multimedia capabilities as the cornerstone of driving future technology:
Cell phones aren't just for talking anymore. New technology/gadgetry is constantly evolving and being added to phones. Technology such as MP3 capability, cameras, video, [hard drive] storage etc. SMSI helps make all of that happen.

UBS

NEW YORK, November 1 (newratings.com) - Analyst Maynard J Um of UBS maintains his "buy" rating on Smith Micro Software Inc (ticker: SMSI), while revising his estimates for the company. The 12-month target price has been reduced from $23 to $20.
In a research note published this morning, the analyst mentions that the company has posted its 3Q revenues and EPS in-line with expectations. Robustness in Smith Micro Software's other divisions is likely to help offset the multimedia weakness in 4Q, the analyst says. The pro forma EPS estimate for 2007 has been reduced from $0.87 to $0.84 to reflect higher opex in 4Q. The EPS estimate for 2008 has been raised from $0.78 to $0.78 to reflect a lower tax rate.

Smith Micro Posts Record Net Revenues of $73.4 Million for 2007

ALISO VIEJO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Smith Micro Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: SMSI), a leading developer and marketer of software solutions and services for the wireless market, today reported its 2007 fourth quarter and full year 2007 financial results.

"I am pleased to announce our fiscal 2007 results, the best revenue performance in the history of the Company, with record revenues of $73.4 million for the year," said William W. Smith Jr., President and CEO of Smith Micro Software, Inc. "During fiscal 2007 we were very aggressive in pursuing strategic acquisitions, closing four transactions in 2007 and a fifth in early January with our purchase of the PCTEL Mobility Solutions Group, the largest competitor in our Connectivity & Security business segment. With these acquisitions we have added strategic assets in the form of new technologies, products, customers, and geographic market expansion for our future growth."

Mr. Smith continued, "During the fiscal year I was very pleased to see our Connectivity & Security business segment show tremendous revenue growth of 100% over 2006. This is a core technology for Smith Micro and a strong contributor to our organic growth. In 2007, we grew our wireless customer carrier base from 3 to 14 of the premier wireless carriers throughout the world, and see this market continuing to perform well in 2008, as wireless carriers offer new products to broaden their customer reach, and as enterprise level customers begin deploying wireless solutions. We also saw solid revenues in the Multimedia Group and a strong contribution from our Consumer business lines. The recent acquisition of e frontier, Inc.'s assets has expanded our market reach into the fast growing consumer and prosumer graphic marketplace. We expect to see continued growth throughout 2008 in all these markets."

Mr. Smith concluded, "Throughout the fiscal year we made significant strides to expand our portfolio of wireless solutions, expand our overall customer base, and build upon our leadership as the premier wireless software solutions company. For the first time in the Company's history we are adopting a policy of providing annual revenue guidance, and expect our net revenues for fiscal 2008 to be between $95 million and $105 million. We believe this guidance will better ensure that cohesive and consistent expectations can be developed within the investment community. As we look to 2008 and beyond, we remain extremely excited about the opportunities ahead, as we have positioned the Company for long term growth and profitability."

For the fiscal year ended December 31, 2007, the Company reported record net revenues of $73.4 million; a 35% increase over the $54.5 million reported for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2006. Accompanying significant revenue growth, gross margins also improved significantly year on year, from 63% in 2006 to 72% in 2007 on a GAAP basis. Diluted earnings per share were $0.10 for 2007 versus $0.35 for 2006, due primarily to large non-cash GAAP tax charges in 2007, amortization related to acquisitions closed during the year and stock compensation related expenses. Non-GAAP diluted earnings per share, adjusted for such items, were $0.84 for 2007 compared to $0.69 for 2006, an increase of 22%.

Total cash and cash equivalents at December 31, 2007 was $87.5 million, compared to $92.5 million at December 31, 2006. Diluted shares outstanding as of December 31, 2007 increased to 31.0 million as compared to 25.3 million shares outstanding as of December 31, 2006.

Smith Micro reported net revenues of $20.0 million for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2007, a 16% increase when compared to the $17.2 million reported in the fourth quarter of 2006. Complementing the increase in revenues, gross margins increased from 68% to 77% on a GAAP basis. Diluted EPS for the fourth quarter were $0.02 for 2007 as compared to $0.14 for 2006, which was impacted by non-cash tax charges, amortization related to acquisitions completed during the year and stock compensation related expense. Netting out such items to provide a comparable view, non-GAAP earnings per share for the fourth quarter were $0.25 for 2007 as compared to $0.26 for the same period in 2006.

The tables below present the differences between non-GAAP earnings and net income on an absolute and per-share basis. Non-GAAP financial measures should not be considered in isolation from, or as a substitute for, financial information presented in compliance with GAAP, and the non-financial measures as reported by Smith Micro Software may not be comparable to similarly titled amounts reported by other companies.

Financial Guidance:

Smith Micro is providing fiscal year 2008 net revenues guidance of $95 million to $105 million.
