Ascending Triangle (continuation) Pattern
The ascending triangle is a bullish formation that usually forms during an uptrend as a continuation pattern. There are instances when ascending triangles form as reversal patterns at the end of a downtrend, but they are typically continuation patterns. Regardless of where they form, ascending triangles are bullish patterns that indicate accumulation.
Because of its shape, the pattern can also be referred to as a right-angle triangle. Two or more equal highs form a horizontal line at the top. Two or more rising troughs form an ascending trend line that converges on the horizontal line as it rises. If both lines were extended right, the ascending trend line could act as the hypotenuse of a right triangle. If a perpendicular line were drawn extending down from the left end of the horizontal line, a right triangle would form.
In contrast to the symmetrical triangle, an ascending triangle has a definitive bullish bias before the actual breakout. If you will recall, the symmetrical triangle is a neutral formation that relies on the impending breakout to dictate the direction of the next move. On the ascending triangle, the horizontal line represents overhead supply that prevents the security from moving past a certain level. It is as if a large sell order has been placed at this level and it is taking a number of weeks or months to execute, thus preventing the price from rising further. Even though the price cannot rise past this level, the reaction lows continue to rise. It is these higher lows that indicate increased buying pressure and give the ascending triangle its bullish bias.

LJ International's ENZO Retail Unit Exceeds 2006 Goal for Store Count and Meets Fourth Quarter Goal for Positive EBITDA
Monday January 8, 8:00 am ET
HONG KONG and LOS ANGELES, Jan. 8 /Xinhua-PRNewswire/ -- LJ International Inc. (LJI) (Nasdaq: JADE - News), one of the fastest-growing jewelry companies in the world, today announced that its retail division, ENZO, has exceeded its previously-announced 2006 target for store-count growth and has met its goal for earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA).
As of December 31, 2006, ENZO had a total of 42 retail outlets operating in China, Hong Kong and Macau. This exceeds the target of 40 stores that LJI announced most recently in August 2006. LJI continues on track to meet or exceed its goal of opening at least 100 stores by the time of the Beijing Olympics in the summer of 2008.
In terms of financial performance, ENZO has now passed a key milestone, positive EBITDA. Based on preliminary results for the fourth quarter ending December 31, 2006, it is expected to record positive EBITDA and operating profit, following negative EBITDA and operating profit in the prior quarter. This meets the target announced in June 2006 for breakeven EBITDA by the end of 2006.
LJI Chairman and CEO Yu Chuan Yih commented: "This has been a highly successful year for our ENZO retail division, which made the key transition to positive EBITDA and is well on its way to meeting our goal of full profitability on a net, stand-alone basis by the end of 2007. We are pleased, too, that ENZO is not only opening new stores at a rapid pace but is seeing large increases in revenues that point to healthy growth on a same-store basis. The division is on track to meet its 100-store target by the time of the Beijing Olympics and its 2008 revenue goal of $40 million. In the nearer term, the outlook for 2007 is looking better than ever. We expect soon to be providing new guidance for that year, along with the fourth quarter of 2006."

Below are the 6 Month and 3 Year charts.......
This was released afterhours on Friday :
LJ International, Inc. (LJI) (Nasdaq/GM: JADE), one of the fastest-growing jewelry companies in the world and, through its ENZO brand, the largest foreign jewelry retailer in China, today raised its guidance for revenues, net income and earnings per share for its fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2006.
Revenues are now expected to total approximately $40 million for the fourth quarter and $123 million for the full year. Both figures would represent new records for the Company. Fourth quarter revenues are expected to be approximately 27% above the $31.6 million reported in the fourth quarter of 2005. Projected full year revenues are expected to be approximately 30% above the $94.6 million reported in all of 2005.
LJI expects net income for the fourth quarter ended December 31, 2006, to be approximately $3.0 million, exceeding the upper limit of the Company's earlier guidance by 43%. The projected fourth quarter 2006 net income is more than double the $1.4 million reported in the fourth quarter of 2005. For the full year, net income is expected to reach approximately $6 million, or approximately 76% above the $3.4 million reported in 2005.
Earnings per fully diluted share (EPS) also are expected to come in well over earlier guidance and sharply above year-ago levels. EPS is now projected to be approximately $0.16 for the fourth quarter and $0.34 for all of 2006. This quarterly projection represents an increase of approximately 78% over the $0.09 reported in the fourth quarter of 2005. The full year projected EPS represents an approximate 33% increase above the $0.24 reported for all of 2005.
Note: The single analyst was expecting .08 4Q Monday should be interesting.
Sometimes all you need is some grade school math to make a sound and reasonable guess. If the market behaves normally, we'll see $.34 (new EPS) x 35 (old P/E) = $12 in the short run.
Ram
Good estimate. If the market believes the growth rate, might even see some PE expansion over this quarter.

JADE looking interesting for a move up soon. JADE's been consolidating for a while and it looks like the Chinese market is holding up well while the U.S. markets are not so much.
MHJ (sells jewlery like JADE) by the way has been doing well the last 2 sessions.
I wonder if JADE will "bang up" against the 50 dma and then pop. Or will it pop sooner??
I will wait a few days to see...but I'm pretty sure this one will have a good run soon. ;)

Dutton Associates Announces Investment Opinion: LJ International Maintained at Speculative Buy (Possible Near Term Upgrade) Rating by Dutton Associates
Tuesday April 17, 12:00 pm ET
EL DORADO HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dutton Associates continues its coverage of LJ International Inc. (Nasdaq:JADE - News) with an update report maintaining its rating at Speculative Buy (subject to upgrade) and a $16.00 target price. The updated report by Dutton senior analyst Sally L. Wallick, CFA is available at www.jmdutton.com as well as from First Call, Bloomberg, Zacks, Reuters, Knobias, and other leading financial portals.
LJ International has not yet reported fourth quarter and full year 2006 results. However, in mid February, the Company announced sharply higher revenue and earnings guidance for both periods. It projects fourth quarter revenue of $40 million, up 27% from $31.6 million a year earlier, and diluted earnings of $0.16 per share, 78% above the 2005 fourth quarter's earnings of $0.09 per share. For the full year, its projections are revenue of $123 million, up 30% year over year, and diluted earnings of $0.34 per share versus $0.24 per share in 2005. ENZO achieved positive earnings before interest, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) for the first time in the fourth quarter of 2006 and appears to be on track to turn profitable some time in 2007. In light of ENZO's better-than-expected 2006 performance, the Company plans to accelerate the chain's expansion. We reiterate our Speculative Buy rating on LJI's shares. Based on our target price and Dutton Associates rating parameters, a rating of Strong Speculative Buy could be justified. However, we are maintaining our Speculative Buy rating for now pending the 2006 earnings report and will review this rating again following that release.
This is a Monster Move with big volume.
MACD turning North off the center line....nice deal... ;)
Looking for a retest of its previous high around $12.64.......
Keep an eye on volume at that point. But this will at least retest that area.
JADE currently trades at 37.24 times earnings, and an average long term growth rate of 36.0% and 56.0% short term growth rate. Actual P/E for Trailing Four Quarters is 43.5, and Forward Four Quarters Estimate is 32.4.
LJ International: Best Play Off Chinese Volatility?
A jewelry company that through its ENZO brand, has become the largest foreign jewelry retailer in China, could be the best way to play the recent volatility created by the Chinese market. The stock has had the wildest price movements in all of the Chinese related companies.
While the fundamentals are bright now, investors should still remain cautious because a change in China's economy will affect LJ International's earnings picture.
Flag, Pennant (Continuation) Patterns:
Flags and Pennants are short-term continuation patterns that mark a small consolidation before the previous move resumes. These patterns are usually preceded by a sharp advance or decline with heavy volume, and mark a mid-point of the move.
Even though flags and pennants are common formations, identification guidelines should not be taken lightly. It is important that flags and pennants are preceded by a sharp advance or decline. Without a sharp move, the reliability of the formation becomes questionable and trading could carry added risk. Look for volume confirmation on the initial move, consolidation and resumption to augment the robustness of pattern identification.
Flag: A flag is a small rectangle pattern that slopes against the previous trend. If the previous move was up, then the flag would slope down. If the move was down, then the flag would slope up. Because flags are usually too short in duration to actually have reaction highs and lows, the price action just needs to be contained within two parallel trend lines.
Pennant: A pennant is a small symmetrical triangle that begins wide and converges as the pattern matures (like a cone). The slope is usually neutral. Sometimes there will not be specific reaction highs and lows from which to draw the trend lines and the price action should just be contained within the converging trend lines.
Still positive.

Friday , July 20, 2007 07:50ET
LJ International Inc. (JADE) received a letter from The Nasdaq Stock Market indicating that as a result of the Company's failure to file its Annual Report on Form 20-F for the fiscal year ended December 31, 2006 with the SEC by July 17, 2007 (the deadline for filing its Form 20-F after having requested a 15-day extension from the original due date), the Company is not in compliance with the Nasdaq requirements for continued listing, and its securities are, therefore, subject to delisting from The Nasdaq Global Market.

Seeking Alpha:
LJ International Worth the Wait?
Thursday July 19, 4:24 am ET
Ant & Sons submits: Another delay is hitting shares of LJ International Inc. (NasdaqGM: JADE - News) hard. The company announced that investors will have to wait even longer to see financial results. This follows a similar announcement that came in June when the company extended its filing date.
The talk
With assurances over the past few weeks that the company would meet the deadline, the stock was bid up and was trading just under its 52-week high of $13.15 after a long period of consolidation. Hence, the disappointment is being reflected again today with LJ International shares gapping lower. Just a few days ago, the stock was trading at a very reasonable 17x 2007 EPS and 12x 2008 EPS estimates and after the drop would be considered a bargain. Based on past guidance, the company is looking to continue to achieve double-digit annual growth while also widening its gross and net margins and is planning on opening new stores ahead of the 2008 Olympics in China. The results will be good but audited financials are lacking.
The technicals
Holding steady above the 50-day moving average and consolidating, shares were setting up for a new high but have now cracked below $10.
The takeaway
While the first quarter of this year saw a lot of institutional activity in this name, bringing total institutional ownership to roughly 24% of the common stock, the short interest is also at an all-time high with 2.3 million shares short in the latest month, much higher from the 27,080 shares short this time last year. Shorts are betting on a delisting and continued lack of financial statements that will trip up the stock price. In the short term, that strategy has worked as frustrated longs have sold out and moved their money elsewhere. But if you decide to sweat it out, the company's strong jewelry business should ultimately inspire a comeback.

Wow, what a falling knife! Anyone still following this? Is it worth some speculative dollars to start a position? Maybe about $4.60? Don't care about the technicals right now, just like to bottom fish if there's a really big one down there. :-\
Sully-
I wouldn't touch it, the market obviously knows something.
Sometimes you just cant trust the fundamentals.
cpne.ob, hsoa, etc. They have great PEs, but the cash can only come in for so long. JADE, I suppose has a more legit business, but I feel like you just have to trust the market here. Dropping about 2/3 of value...hard to imagine it'll come back much. Unless you're playing for a bounce or something..
I agree, bjc. I would never put much into it without first seeing audited financials, but I would gamble just a bit if it falls around $4.60.
Is it free-falling because the market knows something or is it just fear of the unknown?
That's the question...
I suppose that's the question a lot of the time. My strategy lately has been buying high quality companies on big time correcetions. I used to ignore fundamentals, but it's pretty much all I use now.
I like to use TA when picking buy targets and such. Support/resistance, emas, adx, macd I think are all very useful, but I only use TA in addition to fundamental analysis. I refuse to buy based solely on a chart now. I think weekly MACD is incredibly useful. Once I see it start to curve in for a bullish cross on a stock that's been in the dumps, that's my buy time. I also like to have seen the 20 ema broken to the upside.
Maybe you're on to something here and you've found a quality company trading at a significant discount. I'm sure there will be some kind of buzz at some point because of the olympics that could fuel the share price...

I know your fundamental strategy, bjc. That's one reason I seek out and highly respect your posts while ignoring many others.

I think you were probably right the first time-JADE should be avoided unless just gambling/guessing. Can't say whether they are a quality company without the financials.
Thanks for your responses bjc and applaud.
getting a BIG bounce today.
JADE's Turn ;D
I picked some up at $5.70 and it's up to $7 now
Edit: Watching a nearly 25% gain turning into a loss. :'(
I don't think this news was posted, all this started the big down turn the
stock took......
Also.......JADE is delinquent in its regulatory filings !

The Rosen Law Firm Files Securities Class Action Charging LJ International, Inc. With Securities Fraud and Seeks to Recover Investors' Losses -- JADE
Friday September 28, 6:00 pm ET
NEW YORK, NY--(MARKET WIRE)--Sep 28, 2007 -- The Rosen Law Firm (http://www.rosenlegal.com) announced today it has filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of purchasers of LJ International, Inc. ("LJI") (NasdaqGM:JADE - News) common stock during the period from February 15, 2007 through September 6, 2007, inclusive (the "Class Period").
To join the LJI securities litigation as a plaintiff or for further information, please call Laurence Rosen, Esq. or Phillip Kim, Esq. toll-free at 866-767-3653 or email
[email protected] or
[email protected].
You can join the class action online at http://www.rosenlegal.com.
The complaint charges LJI and certain of its officers and directors with violations of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 for allegedly issuing false and misleading statements about its business prospects, financial condition, and its statements of revenues and net income. In particular, the Complaint asserts that throughout the Class Period, the Company issued false and misleading reports overstating the Company's fiscal 2005 and 2006 financial results.
On July 16, 2007, LJI announced that it was delaying the release of its fourth quarter 2006 through second quarter 2007 financial results because the Company's new auditors were unable to sign off on the Company's financial statements. On September 6, 2007, LJI revealed that it had failed to achieve the projected fourth quarter and fiscal 2006 financial results LJI had previously issued on January 8, 2007 -- and later upgraded on February 15, 2007 -- due to a potential tax provision, and that its fiscal 2006 earnings report of $3 million would "likely be adversely impacted." As a result of these and other adverse disclosures, the Company's stock price fell dramatically and caused investors losses.
A class action lawsuit has already been filed on behalf of LJI shareholders. If you wish to serve as lead plaintiff, you must move the Court no later than November 19, 2007. If you wish to join the litigation or to discuss your rights or interests regarding this class action, please contact plaintiff's counsel, Laurence Rosen, Esq. or Phillip Kim Esq. of The Rosen Law Firm toll free at 866-767-3653 or via e-mail at

The market sell-off was uncomfortable...but not totally expected after such a run up. The so-called "experts" are saying the market sold off after an analyst Lowered price target for BIDU. Well that to me doesn't justify a market sell-off. Maybe it was a reason for people to lock in profits. :-\
I personally don't like big red candles after putting in a new high. But I think the markets will continue a bull-run. But there will be down days in the near future no doubt.

LJ International Announces First Half Fiscal 2007 Financial Results
Friday December 28, 4:40 pm ET
HONG KONG & LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--LJ International Inc. (LJI) (Nasdaq/GM:JADE), a leading jewelry manufacturer and retailer, today announced financial results for the Company's first six months ended June 30, 2007.
Revenues for the first six months ended June 30, 2007 totaled $67.16 million, up 34% from $50.10 million in the first six months of 2006. Net income for the first six months ended June 30, 2007 was $1.83 million, or $0.08 per fully diluted share, up 60% on a per-share basis from $0.95 million, or $0.05 per fully diluted share, in the first six months of 2006. The majority of the rise in revenues for the first half of 2007 was primarily due to the growth of LJI's ENZO retail division, which currently has 93 retail stores in operation across Greater China.
LJI's overall gross profit in the first six months of 2007 rose to $19.32 million, or 29% of revenues, from $13.10 million, or 26% of revenues, in 2006 primarily as a result of the Company's higher-margin ENZO revenue mix.
Selling, general and administrative (SG&A) expenses for the first six months of 2007 totaled $15.06 million, up from $10.90 million in the first six months of 2006. The increase was due to increased advertising, rental, staffing and other costs stemming from ENZO's increased store count as well as higher corporate-level expenses, including legal and professional advisory services.

Congrats Jody on the profit. Be careful...remember JADE was down because of the delay in financial reports.
The market was looking for JADE to report...and now that they did...I think JADE will go higher in the days to come. ;)
Actually that $6.27 comment above shoulda read, "BOUGHT TO COVER!" but it just didn't have the same effect.... ;)

LJ International Reports Sharp Growth in Retail Sales and Income for First Quarter of 2009
Company's China-Based ENZO Retail Chain Boosts Company-Wide Results as Wholesale Operations Decline from Global Recession
HONG KONG, May 15, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- LJ International Inc. (LJI) a leading jewelry manufacturer and retailer, today reported financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2009.
First Quarter 2009 Highlights:
-- Combined revenues for retail and wholesale divisions decreased 25% year-over-year.
-- Retail revenues increased 40%, surpassing wholesale revenues for first time.
-- Retail sales growth raises Company's gross margin; operating results swing from loss to profit.
-- Company remains profitable on net basis, with EPS of $0.01 on a fully-diluted basis.
-- Cash position remains strong, rising to over $0.64 cents per share.
-- Company to continue to focus on retail growth in China while maintaining position in its wholesale operations during global recession.
Retail Revenues Take Lead for First Time
For the first quarter ended March 31, 2009, LJI revenues totaled $22.7 million, down 25% from $30.4 million in the first quarter of 2008. The decrease was due to a 51% drop in sales of LJI's wholesale operations, to $10.8 million in the first quarter of 2009 from $21.9 million a year earlier. This decrease was partially offset by a 40% increase in sales from its ENZO retail chain in China, to $11.9 million in the first quarter of 2009 from $8.5 million a year earlier.
This latest quarter was the first time in the Company's history in which LJI's retail operations, consisting of its chain of ENZO stores across China, accounted for a larger share of revenue than its wholesale operations. The decline in wholesale revenue was due largely to the slowdown in the global economy and consumer spending. The recession in the U.S., which accounts for the majority of LJI's wholesale revenues, had an especially sharp impact on sales. The growth in retail revenues was due to the continued, albeit slowing, growth in the Chinese economy and to the ongoing productivity gains from the Company's ENZO retail chain of jewelry stores. As of March 31, 2009, a total of 92 ENZO stores were in operation.
Retail Growth Raises Margins, Improves Operating Results
Overall gross profit in the first quarter of 2009 fell 10%, to $8.7 million from $9.6 million a year earlier. As a percentage of overall sales, gross margin rose to 39% from 32%, reflecting the much higher margins of retail revenues compared to wholesale revenue. Retail gross margin in the first quarter of 2009 was 54%, compared to a wholesale margin of 21%.
Selling, general and administrative (SG&A) and other operating expenses for the first quarter of 2009 totaled $8.4 million, down from $10.2 million in the first quarter of 2008. The reduced operating expenses during the first quarter of 2009 were due to management's cost-containment and corporate restructuring efforts in response to the global recession. Broken down by division (corporate, retail and wholesale), these expenses dropped sharply at the corporate level, to $0.3 million from $1.2 million a year earlier and also fell substantially in wholesale, to $2.7 million from $4.4 million. Expenses rose by a smaller amount in retail, to $5.3 million in 2009 from $5.2 million in 2008, reflecting a substantial increase in contingent rental expenses in line with the increase in retail revenue while other expenses dropped sharply also.
Operating income for the first quarter of 2009 totaled $0.4 million, compared to an operating loss of ($1.1 million) in the first quarter of 2008. The improvement was due to the drop in corporate operating expenses and an operating profit of $1.1 million in the retail division, up from a retail operating loss of ($0.4 million) in the first quarter of 2008. The wholesale division reported an operating loss of ($0.4 million) in the first quarter of 2009, compared to operating income of $0.5 million a year earlier.
Company Maintains Profitability, Improves Cash Position
Net income for the first quarter of 2009 was $0.1 million, or $0.01 per fully diluted share, down from $1.1 million, or $0.05 per fully diluted share, in the first quarter of 2008. Net income for 2008 included a $2.2 million gain on the sale of property held for lease. Excluding that item, it would have shifted to a loss of ($1.2 million), or ($0.05) per fully diluted share.
On the balance sheet, LJI's cash and cash equivalents totaled $14.8 million as of March 31, 2009, or $0.64 cents per share, up from $13.3 million on December 31, 2008. Long-term liabilities totaled $3.8 million on March 31, 2009, up from $2.2 million at the end of 2008.
CEO to Focus on ENZO's Continued Growth While Preparing for Wholesale Recovery
LJI Chairman and CEO Yu Chuan Yih commented, "The mixed record of the results for our first quarter is a direct reflection of a very challenging global environment, offset by continued good news from the retail market in China. The steep drop in wholesale revenues reflects the situation in North America, especially where consumers have dramatically curtailed purchases of luxury items such as jewelry. The continued rise across our ENZO retail stores reflects the more robust consumer market in China, where the economy is growing more slowly than in recent years but has not slipped into a deep recession comparable to the rest of the world. The over-arching good news here, we believe, is that ENZO's retail growth in China should continue and that once the global recession ends, we will be positioned to improve our wholesale results and further enhance an already bright outlook for retail."
Mr. Yih continued, "The latest quarter was historic for us, in that it was the first in which retail sales, entirely from our ENZO retail chain, overtook wholesale as our principal source of revenues. Recovering wholesale revenue might tip the balance away from retail in the near future, but the long-term trend is clear: LJI's future growth lies with the continued expansion of our ENZO retail stores across China while further solidifying our position in our wholesale business."
