The WiMAX market is heating up quickly, with worldwide sales of fixed and mobile WiMAX equipment up 6% in 3Q07 to $206 million following a 14% jump in 2Q07, says Infonetics Research in its latest report (November, 2007).

Worldwide unit shipments of fixed and mobile WiMAX equipment are up 16% in 3Q07, driven by continued rollout of new fixed and mobile WiMAX networks, and further expansion of those already in operation, the report shows.

"In addition to Sprint-Nextel's much-publicized roll-out, carriers including Vodafone, Brasil Telecom, Telmex, SK Telecom, Wateen, and NTT, amongst many others, have made a commitment to WiMAX, demonstrating that adoption is reaching all corners of the globe. Also this quarter, the ITU added mobile WiMAX as an approved 3G technology into its official IMT-2000 set of standards, consolidating WiMAX's position as a technology with a long-term future and posing a more serious challenge to W-CDMA and CDMA2000 1xEV-DO network deployments.

*** On a surprising recent announcement, PRXM decided to repurchase a total of over 3.5M shares at $1.7. These repurchases are expected to be completed during the current quarter. When completed these trasactions will reduce Proxim's outstanding shares by approximately 9.0% and its fully-diluted capitalization by approximately 11.3%.

PRXM announced last month that it had jumped up to 3rd place in Dell'Oro's Mesh market Share Report.

According to the Dell'Oro Group's 2Q07 Wireless LAN report, Proxim was third in unit market share in the Service Provider (i.e., mesh) segment, behind Nortel and Tropos. The report also listed Proxim as fourth in radios shipped and fifth in revenue.

"For Proxim to come from nowhere to third in the market in one quarter is a phenomenal accomplishment," said Robert Fitzgerald, CEO of Proxim Wireless. "The rapid growth of our mesh products is a testament to both the dynamic nature of the market, quality of our products, and the dedication of the Proxim team."

Proxim's Wi-Fi, WiMax, mesh technology for Municipal Wireless Networks for global, metropolitan, local, and rural markets is right in the middle of a booming sector of the global economy

Demand for Municipal networks is exploding as highlighted in USA Today's October 18 article "WiMax Rides New Wave If Surfing Technology".

MuniWireless com predicts that spending by U.S. municipalities for public Wi-Fi could cross $3 Billion from a few hundred million in four years.

Around the globe, Proxim Wireless (Nasdaq: PRXM...formerly TRBM) is a proven premiere manufacturer/provider of broadband wireless systems to carriers, municipalities and enterprises. Proxim pioneered WLAN, Carrier Class Point-to-Point and Millimeter Wave.

Proxim offers end-to-end solutions including WiMAX, Wi-Fi Mesh, Wi-Fi and Point-to-Point with a significant installed base – over 235,000 customers in deployments across the Americas, Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific.

Wireless Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) Wins Award for Saving LA County $7 Million

Proxim and Systems Integrated Selected by Los Angeles County to Provide Wireless Communications to 1,000 Traffic Signals; Wireless ITS Used to Reduce Traffic Congestion and Improve Commute Times

Tuesday November 17, 2009

SILICON VALLEY, CA--(Marketwire - 11/17/09) - Proxim Wireless Corporation (OTCQX: PRXM) (Pinksheets:PRXM - News), a leading provider of end-to-end broadband wireless systems, and Systems Integrated (SI) announced today that their deployment of the County of Los Angeles Department of Public Works' wireless communication system earned a 2009 National Association of Counties Achievement Award.

This honor is presented each year to county officials, their employees and the counties themselves to recognize the creativity and imagination of counties across the nation.

Wireless radio installation reduced both the set up and operating costs for signal communication while also assisting the County's goal to reduce traffic problems for the travelling public. The County of LA estimated that utilization of Proxim's wireless technology to connect the 1,000 traffic intersections saved the County's ITS program $7 million in costs over traditional copper or fiber optic installations. Additionally, the County of LA estimated that the use of Proxim's radios will save the County $708,000 annually versus the cost of leased telephone lines.

"The ability to deploy a wireless communications network for monitoring the operation of 1,000 traffic signals is a huge enabler of productivity for LA County, and will go a long way towards the County's goal to reduce congestion and enable real-time traffic signal monitoring," said John Holbrook, General Manager of SI. "We've found that Proxim's broadband wireless technology not only provides the best performance for delivering bandwidth intensive applications like video, but it is also the most cost-effective solution on the market. As a result, we have used Proxim's equipment exclusively throughout this deployment."

"More cities and counties are realizing that wireless technology can save them a lot of money in both up front and recurring costs, and in the case of LA County, wireless technology was able to help save $7 million in costs up front, and an additional $708,000 annually -- money which can now be reallocated to education, healthcare and other endeavours," said Pankaj Manglik, CEO of Proxim. "Especially in these economic times, the ability for cities and counties to save money on IT costs enables them to put that money where it's truly needed. And as we've seen with LA County and others, wireless technology not only saves the county money, but it is a great enabler for Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), which increases the quality of life for citizens by reducing smog and their commute times."

Well Known Technology Analyst says:

Proxim May Benefit From Wireless Backhaul Growth

By Rich Teherani, CEO TMCnet

Wireless backhaul is one of the fastest-growing areas of the tech space as it seems almost no matter how poor the global economy does, consumers and businesses need more broadband on the go. And as the devices get more powerful and do more like download podcasts and watch videos, existing wireless infrastructure just can't keep up and as a result base stations need to be added and reinforced with more connectivity. It is difficult to predict anything slowing this trend down for at least five years.

One company playing in the space is Proxim Wireless and they recently debuted a 4G backhaul product line consisting of the Tsunami QB-8100 point-to-point and the Tsunami MP-8100 point-to-multipoint - solutions with throughput of up to 600Mbps.

I spent some time at the Proxim Wireless office in Milpitas, CA where I met with Robb Henshaw the Director of Marketing & Communications. We talked for a bit about how the company was focusing resources on municipal WiFi in past years and eventually found this market did not have the opportunity they believed.

Proxim's current focus is on ensuring more bandwidth over more distance and Robb commented that the iPhone shows carriers that that they were unprepared for the onslaught of wireless traffic which continues to come.

The backhaul market was already on a solid trajectory before broadband stimulus funds were to be rolled out. It seems apparent that vendors in this space are in a pretty solid position as the US government and demand for consumer electronics drives the need for ever-increasing broadband capacity.

The challenge for Proxim is the company's market cap is low at under $6 million which means they have little margin for error. But they are entering a rapidly growing space which could become a cash-cow rather quickly.

Although a speculative investment, Proxim could be a play on broadband stimulus funds and the need for ever-faster data pipes at cell towers. A lot of this company's future success depends on execution which is difficult to predict. What is known is that the tide is rising and Proxim's boat could rise as a result.
