Anthracite Capital, Inc. operates as a real estate investment trust. The company, through its subsidiaries, engages in investing in commercial real estate securities, loans, and equity. It focuses on acquiring pools of performing loans in the form of commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS), issuing secured debt backed by CMBS, and providing strategic capital for the commercial real estate industry in the form of mezzanine loan financing and equity. The company has elected to be taxed as a REIT. It would not be subject to federal income tax, provided it distributes at least 90% of its taxable income to its shareholders. Anthracite Capital was founded in 1997 and is based in New York, New York.
