Al Qaeda reportedly taps Saif al-Adel as successor, potentially signaling a rift
Al Qaeda senior leaders reportedly chose Egyptian militant Saif al-Adel as an interim successor to Osama bin Laden, instead of expected next-in-line Ayman al-Zawahiri.

Al Qaeda has chosen Egyptian Al Qaeda member Saif al-Adel as interim leader while it decides on a more permanent successor to Osama bin Laden, according to independent but unconfirmed reports. While Mr. Adel has long been a senior member of Al Qaeda, his appointment comes as a surprise to many. It may signal a rift in the organization, which many expected would now be led by Mr. bin Laden's longtime No. 2, Ayman al-Zawahiri.

CNN's Peter Bergen attributed his information to former Libyan militant Noman Benotman, who once had ties with Al Qaeda but is now an analyst with British think tank Quilliam Foundation. The Pakistani paper The News based its report on sources it said were in attendance at a recent Al Qaeda meeting when members voted on bin Laden's successor.

Mr. Zawahiri and Adel were both part of the Egyptian militant group Islamic Jihad, which was responsible for the assassination of former Egyptian President Anwar Sadat. Adel, like Zawahiri, is on the FBI's Most Wanted Terrorists list, with rewards of up to $5 million and $25 million, respectively, being offered for information leading to their capture. Adel is wanted for involvement in the 1998 bombings of two US embassies in Africa, and is also believed to have been involved in Somalia and Afghanistan – where he fought the Soviets in the 1980s as well as US-led NATO troops beginning in 2001.

IN PICTURES: Bin Laden's terror legacy

He reportedly fled to Iran early in the war, however, and only recently resurfaced with the publication of five letters that "directly [challenge] the claims to the al-Qa'ida legacy made by the more familiar faces of the post-9/11 al-Qa'ida organization – Ayman al-Zawahiri and Abu Yahya al-Libi in particular," reported Jihadica.com, the online clearinghouse of militant literature, in February.

According to Mr. Benotman, Adel was chosen as an interim leader because members have been clamoring for a formal successor to bin Laden but Al Qaeda is not ready to choose a permanent leader. Several leaders currently in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region made the decision, rather than the full shura council, because Al Qaeda was unable to convene the complete council.

The News reports that a man named Mohammed Mustafa Yamni is likely to be named Al Qaeda's chief once the full council can be convened. Zawahiri will remain in charge of Al Qaeda's military arm and will take over monitoring Al Qaeda's international contacts, Adel's previous responsibility, the paper said.

If it's true that Adel has been chosen over Zawahiri, it would be a major demotion for the more senior Egyptian militant and could signal a "major split within militant ranks," the Guardian reports. The leaders of Al Qaeda affiliates in Iraq and Yemen have already thrown their support behind Zawahiri and may not accept Adel as a leader, even an interim one.

"[Zawahiri] is the right person to take over. All wings of al-Qaida would approve of him and all Jihadist movements trust him greatly," Rashad Mohammed Saeed Ismail, a Yemeni cleric linked to Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), was quoted as saying.

The Christian Science Monitor reported last week that Mr. Zawahiri has been a divisive figure in Al Qaeda who lacks the "charisma" to lead the organization.

... Mr. Zawahiri, a surgeon and the scion of an upper-class Egyptian family, strikes many as haughty and droning with little of the ability Mr. bin Laden had to inspire. Irascible, he is given to fueling obscure ideological conflicts within jihadi ranks; Al Qaeda itself reportedly split into two factions before bin Laden's death, with Zawahiri in charge of the spinoff, according to Pakistani intelligence officials.

Three decades ago, a member of Zawahiri's Islamic Jihad group recognized his lack of leadership, reportedly telling him, "No matter what group you belong to, you cannot be its leader."

According to Reuters, Adel is also suspected of setting up Al Qaeda training camps in Sudan and Afghanistan in the 1990s. US officials believe Adel fled to Iran after 9/11 and was put in Iranian custody, but was freed a year ago and moved to the Afghanistan-Pakistan border region.

A report by the prominent German magazine Der Spiegel a year ago said Adel had been under house arrest for nine years in Iran, and called his release "possibly the biggest break" Al Qaeda had had in a decade.

Spiegel, which is known for its investigative reporting, quoted Australian scholar Leah Farrall, who was writing her doctoral dissertation on Al Qaeda's command structures, as saying: "Not only would Saif al-Adel's return to the field greatly bolster al-Qaida's operational capability, and bring a rigour to its external operations, but his longstanding connections to groups whose relations with al-Qaida have been subject to tension could herald a new era in operational cooperation for attacks against the West."

CNN reports that Adel's Egyptian roots could be problematic for some members because some in Al Qaeda insist that the group's leader must come from the Arabian Peninsula, where Islam's two holiest sites are located. Bin Laden was from Saudi Arabia. Benotman speculated that Adel's appointment might be a way for Al Qaeda leadership to test the waters and see if the group's full membership would accept the leadership of the previously expected successor, Zawahiri, who is also Egyptian.

American-born al Qaeda spokesman appears in new video
American my ass! scum bag >:(

American-born al Qaeda spokesman Adam Gadahn appears in a new video purportedly from the organization, calling President Obama "snakelike" and saying he is "running the affairs of a declining and besieged empire."

In the video, posted Sunday on Islamist websites, Gadahn criticizes what he says is the United States' "aggression and interference" in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia, and also criticizes moving his "captive brothers" from detention centers worldwide to "Muslim-only concentration camps in Illinois, Bagram [Airfield, Afghanistan] and elsewhere -- all in the name of protecting the American people from the threat of Muslim retaliation for American crimes."

He is apparently referring to a maximum-security prison in Thomson, Illinois, being considered by the government as a possible venue to house terror suspects.

CNN could not independently verify the authenticity of the 24-minute video, posted on websites known to carry such messages in the past and carrying the name of as-Sahab, al Qaeda's media arm. In it, Gadahn speaks in English; the video features Arabic subtitles.

"Yes, Barack," Gadahn says. "Just as our demands remain the same, the choice America and its allies face also remains the same -- either the possible restoration of your safety and security by ignoring the opposition of your tyrannical corporations and special-interest groups and restoring the rights you have stolen from Muslims and other persecuted and oppressed nations, or guaranteeing for yourselves a future of misery, insecurity and ultimately defeat, should you continue to ravage our countries, interfere in our affairs and trample on our dignity, liberty and sovereignty."

The solution to U.S. security, he says, does not lie in improving intelligence-sharing, "occupation" or supporting "despicable regimes."

Addressing Obama, Gadahn says, "I know that as you slither snakelike into the second year of your reign as a purported president of change, you are fighting, your hands full, with running the affairs of a declining and besieged empire, and in the process proving yourself to be nothing more than another treacherous, bloodthirsty and narrow-minded American war president."

In March, reports of Gadahn's arrest came hours after websites posted a video of him praising the November massacre at Fort Hood, Texas, saying suspect Maj. Nidal Hasan "lit a path" for other Muslim service members to follow. Two senior Pakistani government officials said investigators had arrested Gadahn, but later backed away from those reports.

The U.S. government has offered a $1 million reward for information leading to the capture of Gadahn, the first American charged with treason since 1952.

Anwar al-Awlaki Targeted By U.S. Drones

By MARTHA RADDATZ (@martharaddatz) and LUIS MARTINEZ (@LMartinezABC)
May 6, 2011
Less than a week after Navy SEALs killed Osama bin Laden in a raid in Pakistan, U.S. drones have tried to killed radical cleric Anwar al-Awlaki in Yemen, according to U.S. officials.

Officials say the missile strike did not succeed in killing Awlaki, a U.S.-born cleric who has become a leading voice of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), the Yemeni affiliate of al Qaeda.

Yemeni officials said two al Qaeda operatives were killed in the Thursday strike in a remote area of Yemen.

The attempt to kill Awlaki was the first acknowledged U.S military strike inside Yemen in a year. In May 2010, missiles killed an envoy of Yemeni president Saleh by mistake. Unlike previous strikes in Yemen that have involved Tomahawk cruise missile launched by Navy ships, Thursday's strike involved a predator drone. Until now, drones flying over Yemen had been unarmed.

In early 2010, the Obama administration authorized the CIA and the U.S. military to kill Awlaki even though he is a U.S. citizen. Born in New Mexico, Awlaki moved to Yemen in 2004. Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad said he was inspired by Awlaki, and accused Ft. Hood shooter Maj. Nidal Hasan exchanged emails with Awlaki. In January 2010, Awlaki said he had had contact with Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the would-be "underwear bomber" accused of trying to blow up Northwest flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit on Christmas Day 2009.

In September, the Yemeni government said it had surrounded Awlaki in the village of Houta, but then said it had instead captured two-dozen al Qaeda fighters and a "vital terror headquarters."

In a statement, the Yemeni government said the military was still "combing the area, searching for militants before declaring the area safe for its residents to return." The military says the battle began after a failed attack by AQAP on a pipeline. Thousands of civilians fled their homes in the wake of the fighting.

Yemeni officials said they believed Awlaki was near the village with a group of suspected al Qaeda militants. But a Yemeni diplomat who had spoken to military commanders on the scene told ABC News there was no confirmation that Awlaki was at the location.

A U.S. drone strike in Yemen on May 5, 2011, was aimed at killing Anwar al-Awlaki. According to Yemeni and U.S. officials, the American-born radical cleric who is suspected of orchestrating terrorist attacks on the U.S, escaped unharmed.

Bin Laden raid intel yields leads on al Qaeda No. 2 al Zawahiri

The intelligence community has obtained "positive intelligence" from the materials taken from Osama bin Laden's compound which is helping narrow down the locations of core al Qaeda leadership including the whereabouts of Ayman al Zawahiri, al Qaeda's former No. 2 man and a candidate to succeed bin Laden.

The intelligence source said that there are "numerous" leads giving them locations but cautioned that they are fluid as al Qaeda leaders may be on the run, changing their locations.

"It's not as easy as going to an address. They may not be there anymore but it helps a point of reference," the source said.

Another Al Qaeda Chief Taken Out?  8)
Official Says Top Al Qaeda Operative Killed in Pakistan  ;D

In what may be biggest blow to Al Qaeda since Usama bin Laden's death, top Al Qaeda operative and possible bin Laden replacement Ilyas Kashmiri (right) is reportedly killed in American drone strike.

DERA ISMAIL KHAN, Pakistan –  A top Al Qaeda commander and possible replacement for Usama bin Laden was killed in an American drone-fired missile strike close to the Afghan border, the militant group he heads and a Pakistani intelligence official said Saturday.

Ilyas Kashmiri's death is another blow to Al Qaeda just over a month after bin Laden was killed by American commandos in a northwest Pakistani army town. Described by U.S. officials as Al Qaeda's military operations chief in Pakistan, he was one of five most-wanted militant leaders in the country, accused in a string of bloody attacks, including the 2008 Mumbai massacre.

His death was not confirmed publicly by the United States or Pakistani officials.

Verifying who has been killed in the drone strikes is difficult. Initial reports have turned out to be wrong in the past, or are never formally denied or confirmed by authorities here or in the United States.

But a fax from the militant group he was heading -- Harakat-ul-Jihad al-Islami's feared "313 Brigade" -- confirmed Kashmiri was "martyred" in the strike at 11:15 p.m. Friday in South Waziristan tribal region. It vowed revenge against America.

The Pakistani official also said Kashmiri was among nine militants killed in the strike. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with his agency's policy.

Kashmiri's name was on a list of militants that the United States and Pakistan recently agreed to jointly target, officials have said. The successful strike could help repair ties between the two countries that were badly damaged by the unilateral American raid, especially if Islamabad helped provide intelligence leading up to the attack.

The 47-year-old Pakistani, said to be blind in one eye and missing a finger, was one of the country's most accomplished -- and vicious -- militants. He was so close to Al Qaeda's central command that he had been mentioned as a contender for replacing bin Laden.

Indian officials have alleged he was involved in the 2008 Mumbai siege that killed more than 160 people. He has also been named a defendant in an American court over a planned attack on a Danish newspaper that published cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad in 2005.

Kashmiri has most recently been linked to last month's 18-hour assault on a naval base in Karachi. He is also accused of masterminding several bloody raids on Pakistan police and intelligence buildings in 2009 and 2010, as well as a failed assassination attempt against then-President Pervez Musharraf in 2003.

The U.S Department of State says he organized a 2006 suicide bombing against the U.S. consulate in Karachi that killed four people, including an American diplomat.

In September 2009, officials said Kashmiri was believed to have been killed in a drone strike. The report turned out to be wrong. The United States does not acknowledge firing the missiles, though its officials have confirmed the death of high-value targets before.

Senior al Qaeda operative Kashmiri, regarded as one of the most dangerous militants in the world, was killed by a U.S. drone aircraft missile strike in Pakistan, an intelligence official and local media said.

Al Qaeda Urges American Muslims to Buy Guns for Terror Attacks
Published June 04, 2011
FoxNews.com

Al Qaeda has released a video urging Muslims who live in the U.S. to take advantage of the easy access to firearms and buy guns to kill Americans.

In the two-hour video released Friday, Adam Gadahn, an American-born spokesman for the terror network, cited America as an example where Muslims in the West have tools at their disposal for a holy war against "the enemies of Islam."

"America is absolutely awash with easily obtainable firearms," said Gadahn, who is known as Azzam al-Amriki. "You can go down to a gun show at the local convention center and come away with a fully automatic assault rifle without a background check and most likely without having to show an identification card.

"So what are you waiting for?" he asked in a matter-of-fact tone.

The extended video reportedly shows the logos of Exxon, Merrily Lynch and Bank of America. Gadahn seeks to assure would-be terrorists that striking these targets isn't difficult.

"Getting to these criminals isn't as hard as you might think," he said. "I mean, we've seen how a woman knocked the Pope to the floor during Christmas mass, and how Italian leader Berlusconi's face was smashed during a public appearance. So it's just a matter of entrusting the matter to Allah and choosing the right place, the right time and the right method."

The video comes one month after Navy SEALs shot and killed Usama bin Laden in Pakistan.

Complaints about domestic spying dropped after Nidal Hasan's shooting spree at Fort Hood

WASHINGTON - After an Army officer rampaged at Fort Hood last year, Capitol Hill eased its criticism of the government's domestic spying on U.S. citizens, a top official said Wednesday.

"A whole lot fewer were complaining about me spying on Americans," said Michael Leiter, director of the National Counterterrorism Center.

"A whole lot more" members of Congress then began to demand to know why U.S. counterterror agencies weren't spying on Americans, Leiter added at a Washington conference.

Leiter acknowledged he's "not going to hit 10 for 10" on thwarting every terror plot, such as Maj. Nidal Hasan's shooting spree that killed a dozen - particularly as Al Qaeda turns to its regional franchises to carry out smaller strikes.

"Americans have to understand that," he stressed.

Al Qaeda subway plotter Najibullah Zazi, the failed Christmas underwear bomber and bungling Times Square bomber Faisal Shahzad all escaped detection before their plots were fully operational.

Ex-NSA and CIA Director Michael Hayden lamented that intelligence operatives have become risk-averse because they're often encouraged to push the rules to stop attacks, only to get slammed for it later.

"I spent two years after 9/11 explaining why I'd done too little, and five years explaining why I did too much," he said.

Lockerbie bomber attends pro-Kadhafi meeting...  >:D

Ailing Libyan agent Abdelbaset Ali Mohmet al-Megrahi, convicted for life over the 1988 Lockerbie bombing, made his first public appearance in nearly two years at a meeting in support of strongman Moamer Kadhafi.

Megrahi, 59, who has terminal cancer, was released from a Scottish jail on compassionate grounds in August 2009. He is the only man convicted over the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 which killed 270 people, mostly US nationals.

Television images showed an emaciated Megrahi on Tuesday, sitting on a wheelchair, at a meeting of his tribe in support of the embattled Kadhafi's regime.

His last public appearance was a September 2009 meeting with African lawmakers at a Tripoli hospital.

The fact that he has survived several months after his liberation has provoked indignation in Britain and the United States. Tripoli meanwhile maintains a news blackout on the state of his health.
