GigaMedia Partners with EA and Tencent in China for NBA STREET Online
Thursday , July 17, 2008 03:54ET

HONG KONG, July 17 /Xinhua-PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- GigaMedia Limited (Nasdaq: GIGM) announced today that it has secured an exclusive license to offer in China the highly anticipated EA SPORTS(TM) title NBA STREET Online, an exciting new sports game from Electronic Arts Inc. (Nasdaq: ERTS), the world's leading developer and publisher of interactive entertainment.

In addition, GigaMedia and EA have entered into a strategic marketing partnership with Tencent Holdings Limited ("Tencent"), a leading provider of Internet, mobile and telecommunications value-added services in China.

"No one delivers sports action like EA and no one has a larger or more active community than Tencent," stated GigaMedia CEO Arthur Wang. "The partnership of Giga -- the leading online sports game provider -- with EA and Tencent is truly the Dream Team of online games in China."

NBA STREET Online is a real-time, multi-player online version of EA's phenomenally popular NBA games series, featuring fast-paced street basketball action with today's biggest NBA superstars, all in true-to-life detail.

NBA STREET Online addresses a huge fan base in China, which already represents the largest NBA market outside the United States with an estimated 300 million Chinese playing basketball -- making it the favorite sports game among China's youth, according to the NBA. NBA.com / China has rapidly become one of the most popular sports sites in China and NBA is consistently the most searched sports term on Baidu.com, the top search engine in the nation.

"We are honored to partner with EA, the NBA and Tencent to bring the incomparable action, style, and excitement of NBA basketball to China in EA's brilliant new game," stated GigaMedia President Thomas Hui. "For the 300 million basketball players and millions of gamers in China, EA's NBA STREET Online is a monster slam dunk."

"We are very pleased to have top game provider GigaMedia and top Internet company Tencent as our partners for NBA STREET Online in China," said Jon Niermann, President of EA Asia. "Basketball is one of the most popular sports in China and with this powerful partnership, we are confident we have a winning formula for NBA STREET Online in the market."

GigaMedia's leadership in online sports games and entertainment and Tencent's position as China's largest Internet service provider provide this partnership with unprecedented market understanding and resources to launch NBA STREET Online in China and drive strong growth. The partnership will enjoy the unmatched reach of the Tencent community, with over 318 million active user accounts on its QQ instant messaging platform as of March 31, 2008.

"We are pleased to join GigaMedia and EA to promote this exciting, world- class product. We believe this game will provide a wonderful sports gaming experience for our users, complementing the large collection of games we already have on our gaming platform. This is a great example of our effort to explore various partnership models with other successful online game companies in providing the best gaming experience to users on our gaming platform," stated Tencent President Martin Lau.

GigaMedia has exclusive rights to offer NBA STREET Online in China for three years.

GigaMedia shares rise after 2nd-quarter profit beats analyst expectations

NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of GigaMedia Ltd. rose Tuesday after the Taiwan-based online gaming and online gaming software company reported second-quarter profit above analyst expectations.
GigaMedia shares climbed $1.11, or 9.5 percent, to $12.80 in afternoon trading. The stock has ranged from $10.16 to $25.42 over the past year.

The company said that for the quarter ending June 30 it earned $11.2 million, or 19 cents per share, compared with $10.1 million, or 17 cents per share, in the year-ago period. Excluding certain items, the company earned 20 cents per share in the latest quarter.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial expected a profit of 17 cents per share.

GigaMedia's revenue rose 31 percent to $52.5 million from $40.1 million.

The company's overall revenue was bolstered by increased gaming software and service revenue, which rose 26.2 percent to $36.9 million. GigaMedia also reported growth in online game and service revenue.

GigaMedia did not give specific guidance, but predicted revenue from its gaming software business will be a bit lower in the third quarter than in the second quarter due to a seasonal industry slowdown.

For the year, GigaMedia predicted strong gaming software growth.

The company also expects its online games business to report revenue growth in the second half of 2008.

Ahrens also likes GigaMedia a Hong Kong-based firm that trades on the Nasdaq.
"This company is the best of both worlds in both online gambling and online video gaming," he said, with the bulk of its revenue coming from Europe, Asia and Canada.
The shares fetch the same low multiple as many online gambling stocks, Ahrens pointed out, but that valuation is undeserved since "it has never operated in the U.S. and has no plans to" -- thus avoiding the legislative risks that torpedoed the sector following the passage of new laws Stateside and some high-profile prosecutions of operators.
The company, he added, also does "great business in non-gambling online gaming, and recently licensed EA Sports NBA game in China, where the NBA is just huge."
Shares of GigaMedia closed Thursday down 20 cents at $11.59. The stock was as high as $25.42 last November and scraped as low as $10.16 in July

HONG KONG, Sept. 25 /Xinhua-PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- GigaMedia Limited (Nasdaq: GIGM) announced today the successful completion of the sale of its legacy cable and corporate Internet service provider ("ISP") business, consistent with GigaMedia's focus on the high-margin, high-growth online entertainment sector.

GigaMedia expects the transaction to be EPS neutral in 2009. It seems to me to be a great buying opportunity  :)

When the just announced Everest deal goes through they will have around $3.5 in cash per share.

With a POS of $3.23 you basically get their Chinese Online gaming business and 40% of their European gaming business free of charge (The European business alone is valued at $66 million or $1.2 per share based on the deal)

You now have a company that are focused on taking advantage of the Greater Chinese online gaming market and I think that long term this is the right strategic positioning of the company.

The Q3 earnings release was disappointing but I still really like the management and the way they continue to position the company for long term  shareholder value.

The stock is in a sever downtrend but I do think this is a perfect entry point for a long term investor.
