Innovative Telephone Cooperative Selects Extreme Networks to Support Triple Play Ethernet Services

Farmers Telephone Cooperative Sets Foundation for Video, Data and Voice Services Using Extreme Networks' Award-winning Metro Ethernet Solutions

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Nov. 30 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR - News), the leader in open converged networks, has been selected to provide the network foundation for triple play services including video, voice and data by Farmers Telephone Cooperative (FTC). By supplying the Metro Ethernet network infrastructure for 17 FTC central offices, Extreme Networks® will be delivering the critical availability and performance features that are essential to telecom services.

Founded in 1951, FTC is a multi-faceted telecommunications company serving over 60,000 customers within a coverage area spanning 3,000 square miles in South Carolina. FTC required a new network infrastructure that would match the availability and reliability of a circuit-based telephone network. The new network has to be capable of supporting emerging IPTV services using wire speed Layer 2 Ethernet with non-stop forwarding, traffic prioritization and device redundancy.

"We are building a new IP network with the carrier-grade reliability that we are accustomed to with traditional circuit networks as we establish the foundation for emerging video and voice applications," said Gene Failmezger, IP video engineer for FTC. "Not only does Extreme Networks deliver availability with fast failover as well as switching performance requirements suited for IPTV, but also we have experienced a simple and fast installation of devices that went beyond our expectation."

FTC chose Extreme Networks BlackDiamond® modular switching platform for robust Quality of Service (QoS) that allows bandwidth to be prioritized for voice applications and to provide network level availability with scalability. Extreme Networks' 10 Gigabit bandwidth enables the aggregation of thousands of ADSL connections from the customer premises and supports future television applications based on MPEG4-AVC technology.

"Our work with FTC demonstrates the depth of our Metro Ethernet switching solutions, providing service providers the flexibility and high availability to deliver many types of emerging services over a single network," said Suresh Gopalakrishnan, vice president of marketing for Extreme Networks.

WOW........EXTR is UP on heavy volume  :D.
It took longer than expected but finally moving north.... ;D

The stock has now hit the next patch of resistance between $5.20 to $5.25. If it can pass that, there is a good chance it will trade up to $5.50 soon. Looking for $5.15 to provide support.

Update after the closing bell :

It went through 3 different resistance points - $5.00, $5.14, and $5.25 in one day  :o. After hitting the high for the day, the stock consolidated around the $5.25 and closed relatively strong.

I'm happy to see days like today  :).

I'm sure we all want to be at his place - sold 80K shares @ $4.85 ($4.83 - $4.89) and then (or before) exercised the right to buy 40K @ $0.01  ;).

BTW that might be the reason why the price declined yesterday even with the news release  ???

Thank you  setravis. Nice work as usual  :)

BTW I spent some time after dinner thinking of what tomorrow's play might be. Since I'm new to trading it is kinda interesting to develop a trading plan and then watch it throughout the next day for its accuracy.

My take for tomorrow is:

  • play #1 - a healthy pullback, maybe to $5.14, and then some more consolidation in the $5.20's, ending with a close around $5.20
  • play #2 - the up move continues and the stock go to $5.50ish

Either way the stock is going up  ;)

Some recent news......

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct 03, 2006 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- The Boston Red Sox have established fast wireless LAN connectivity at its facilities, including the legendary Fenway Park, with the help of Extreme Networks, Inc. (EXTR, Trade) and expert integrator Carousel Industries. Extreme Networks wireless offering has resulted in a more efficient method for capturing and communicating information throughout the entire facility with a high performance, standards-based system.

The Red Sox have implemented wireless LAN connectivity to improve the reliability of its ticket scanning system, to provide in-seat Internet service in select areas and deliver consistent and high-speed access to players, the media, maintenance crews and service staff. For example, food servers are now be able to take orders via wireless PDAs, storing and relaying valuable information on the fly.

Extreme Networks' wireless LAN (WLAN) technology enables critical security features and reliable coverage, and complements the Red Sox previously- established converged IP network. The Boston Red Sox telecommunications staff and Carousel's dedicated implementation team tested, then selected Extreme Networks' Summit(R) WM 1000 wireless LAN switch and the Altitude 350-2 Access Points (APs) for their reliability, performance and ease-of-use.

Additionally, Extreme Networks is a member of Avaya's DeveloperConnection program and the Summit WM switch is an Avaya-certified solution, complementing the park's existing IP telephony and network foundation.

With the Summit WM, the Boston Red Sox now have a responsive, Layer 3 voice-grade roaming network with mobile Quality of Service (QoS), making the new wireless network more stable, reliable and simple to manage and maintain. The Summit WM wireless controller also provides a controller-less remote site capability, allowing the Red Sox to cost-effectively extend wireless LAN connectivity to its facilities in the Dominican Republic by simply connecting Altitude APs to the remote network.

"Adding wireless connectivity has been a homerun this season as it adds new levels of convenience, access and security to our network," said Steve Conley, Chief Information Officer for the Boston Red Sox. "The media and our players are pleased with ease and reliability resulting from Extreme Networks' Summit WM solution, serving as a beneficial extension of our converged network platform."

"We're very pleased with the results of this upgrade," said Bob Harkins, vice president of sales for Carousel Industries. "Extreme Networks' best-of- breed products were integrated seamlessly with the Avaya infrastructure installed at Fenway Park. The result is a powerful system providing the Red Sox organization with improved services and capabilities, ones that greatly enhance the network."

"The expanded use of wireless Ethernet for simple, reliable connectivity is now showcased prominently for the Red Sox at Fenway Park with the help of our partner, Carousel Industries," said Dan Sibille, senior director of North American Channels for Extreme Networks. "Working with the Boston Red Sox to meet their converged networking needs has been a true success and demonstrates our ability to make complex technology both simple and effective."

RESTON, Va., Oct 06, 2006 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Isocore, the technology validation leader in next generation IP and optical networking, services and applications, today announced the successful completion of its fall 2006 Leading Edge Code (LEC) Testing. The event included participation from a broad range of industry-leading network equipment vendors. The results of this successful testing will be demonstrated live at Isocore Internetworking Lab on October 19th following 9th MPLS International Conference (MPLS 2006) (www.mpls2006.com).

Vendors participating in the Isocore LEC testing included Agilent Technologies (A, Trade), Alcatel (ALA, Trade), Anue Systems, Avici Systems (AVCI, Trade), Cisco Systems (CSCO, Trade), IXIA (XXIA, Trade), Extreme Networks (EXTR, Trade), Foundry Networks (FDRY, Trade), IPInfusion (An ACCESS Company), Juniper Networks (JNPR, Trade), Redback Networks (RBAK, Trade). Vendors participating in the Hybrid Optical LEC testing included Agilent Technologies (A, Trade), Cisco Systems (CSCO, Trade), Juniper Networks (JNPR, Trade), Keio, NTT-AT, and Sycamore Networks (SCMR, Trade), and on-site participation and support by NTT.

During this testing, multiservice interworking of ATM-Ethernet was verified for the first time within the context of hierarchical Virtual Private LAN Services (VPLS) supporting delivery of high and standard definition Video on Demand (VoD) services. In addition, real time MDI (Media Delivery Index), measurements were made for MPEG encoded video Streams carried over MPLS P2MP LSP in carrier Ethernet environment. As part of Isocore's commitment to the integration of Ethernet services evaluation, the MPLS 2006 demonstration will showcase, for the first time, two flavors of implementing VPLS based services, one using LDP based signaling, and other using BGP based signaling.

The fall LEC testing also featured verification of the functionality of carrying T1 services across MPLS core network using structure-Agnostic Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) over Packet (SAToP) using pseudowire emulation as defined by IETF. Also during the testing Diff-serve aware traffic engineering, a critical component required for QoS based voice delivery across MPLS enabled networks was tested. Bi-directional Forwarding Detection (BFD), and Fast Reroute techniques were evaluated to support fast recovery from network failures. The testing also included successful verification of the ability of the participating vendor equipment to support IPv6 extensions for L3 BGP-based VPNs in a multi-vendor environment.

A key objective in this event was to verify the ability of the optical transport network to recover from control plane failures using Graceful restart mechanisms as defined for IETF-based Generalized MPLS (GMPLS) signaling. It was successfully demonstrated that services carried across GMPLS Label Switched Paths (LSP) were not affected by control plane failures, and implementations were interoperable. Additionally, this was the first time that graceful recovery mechanisms were verified for dynamically signaled 10 Gigabit Ethernet over SONET LSPs. The event also verified GMPLS UNI models and MPLS to GMPLS migration strategies that are critical in the realization of Layer 1 VPNs.

Extreme Networks Modular Operating System Now Provides Hardened, DHCP-Based Edge Security
Monday January 29, 7:30 am ET
Latest Version of ExtremeXOS Strengthens NAC Policy Enforcement at the Switch Without Hardware Upgrades or Complex Network Changes

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Jan. 29 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Extreme Networks, Inc. (Nasdaq: EXTR - News), today introduced the latest version of its innovative modular operating system, ExtremeXOS(TM) version 11.6, featuring new enhancements for securing networks using Network Access Control (NAC) technologies. ExtremeXOS now strengthens policy enforcement to help keep the network free from attacks through switch-based enforcement that allows network administrators to securely deploy NAC using DHCP or 802.1x.

Until today, many enterprises deploying NAC to protect the network perimeter have used DHCP servers, which left vulnerabilities. Users that were denied access could simply configure a static IP address to gain entry into the network and get out of quarantine. Extreme Networks® removes this NAC exploit with ExtremeXOS, as the switch enforces all endpoints to only allow devices with valid DHCP assigned IP addresses into the network. Users that attempt to bypass NAC solutions will be automatically blocked by the switch and alert the administrator of the attempted breach.

ExtremeXOS has also introduced enhancements to 802.1x through the innovative Universal Port framework. Universal Port simplifies network operations by automatically provisioning network resources when new users and devices connect. When combined with 802.1x, Universal Port provides more granular policy enforcement including per-user Quality of Service (QoS), rate limiting of bandwidth, and dynamic ACLs.

Both of these enhancements in the latest ExtremeXOS release can be used in conjunction with Sentriant® AG, Extreme Networks NAC solution, to lock down the edge of the network and help ensure endpoints are free from threats and in compliance with company security policies before gaining access. Sentriant AG provides deep endpoint testing without requiring an agent and supports both DHCP and 802.1x enforcement modes allowing it to easily integrate with any network environment.

"By strengthening policy enforcement at the switch, Extreme Networks is taking another critical step to delivering edge security that is open and more cost-effective," said Suresh Gopalakrishnan, vice president and general manager for Extreme Networks emerging technologies business unit. "When evaluating edge security approaches customers truly want a NAC solution with the flexibility to operate with both DCHP and 802.1x. With this software release, customers can choose their best security approach regardless of the enforcement mode."

Extreme Networks is also furthering its support for Microsoft's NAP initiative. ExtremeXOS switches will allow for the deployment of NAP, when it is released, with no hardware upgrades using standards-based 802.1x. ExtremeXOS 11.6 contains several NAP-related enhancements including the ability for the switch to automatically quarantine endpoints while still allowing access to valid remediation servers based on information provided by the NAP policy server.

Introduced December 2003, ExtremeXOS is the industry's first modular operating system with an extensible foundation for converged networks running voice and video services. Along with built-in security capabilities that provide network access control integrated with end point integrity checking, ExtremeXOS has been designed from the ground up to support the next-generation Internet Protocol, IPv6.

ExtremeXOS version 11.6 Availability

ExtremeXOS version 11.6 is available now to customers to use on products under a valid service contract, and is included in all new Blackdiamond® core switches and Summit® edge switches. To learn more about ExtremeXOS please visit www.extremenetworks.com.
