Cupertino, Calif., pharmaceutical company Durect Corp. gained after it said it signed a joint development contract for a pain treatment with Danish drug maker Nycomed. The company will receive an upfront fee of $14 million, more than twice the revenue it reported earlier this month for its full third quarter, and future milestone payments of up to $188 million.

Durect gained $1.50, or 39.5 percent, to $5.30 in aftermarket trading, from their close on Nasdaq at $3.80.

Durect Shares Rise Sharply As Painkiller Safety Trial Shows Drug Well-Tolerated


CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) -- Shares of Durect Corp. soared Thursday morning after the specialty drug maker said an early stage clinical trial testing its second abuse-resistant painkiller showed the drug was safe and well-tolerated.
Shares of Durect jumped $1.37, or 36.1 percent, to $5.17 in early morning trading on the Nasdaq on heavy volume. Shares have traded between $2.56 and $6.40 over the past 52 weeks.

The Phase I clinical trial tested an opioid painkiller based on Oradur, the company's sustained release oral gel-cap technology. Healthy patients taking the drug did not experience any adverse events in the trial, and the drug appeared well-suited for chronic pain patients, the company said.

Oradur makes drugs a sticky, highly viscous mass that is difficult to snort or inject, lowering the chances the drug can be abused.
