Conexant Introduces New Cable Set-Top Box Reference Designs
Monday April 30, 8:00 am ET
HD-AVC/DOCSIS Platforms Targeted at High-Definition PVR Applications

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Conexant Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ:CNXT - News), a worldwide leader in semiconductor solutions for broadband communications and the digital home, today announced the availability of two complete, OpenCable(TM)-compliant cable set-top box (STB) reference designs for high-definition (HD) personal video recording (PVR) applications. The comprehensive reference designs are based on the company's recently announced CX2445X DOCSIS 2.0+ and EuroDOCSIS 2.0+ cable modem integrated circuits, and can be configured with either Conexant's CX24500 single-channel or CX2427X dual-channel HD MPEG-2/H.264/VC-1 video decoder. The highly integrated solutions also include core software and drivers that enable developers to quickly develop middleware and innovative applications for next-generation cable STBs.

"In today's fast-moving marketplace, time-to-market often determines a product's success, particularly in rapidly growing applications such as personal video recording," said Lewis Brewster, executive vice president and general manager of Conexant's Broadband Media Processing business. "Our new reference designs provide manufacturers with the ability to shorten product development cycles, which can provide them with a competitive edge that may translate to greater market share down the road."

The reference designs include support for OpenCable applications platform (OCAP(TM)), a middleware software layer specification that enables manufacturers to develop products that will run on any cable television system in North America, independent of the STB receiver hardware or operating system software. In addition, an embedded processor enables advanced hardware security features, and supports major industry security standards including downloadable conditional access system (DCAS(TM)) and multi-stream CableCARD(TM) (M-Card(TM)). The reference designs also support major operating systems such as Linux®.

Conexant's CX2445X family of DOCSIS 2.0+ front-end cable STB chips feature three demodulators with downstream channel bonding capability, which significantly increases bandwidth capacity. Also included is an integrated out-of-band cable physical layer (PHY), which provides compatibility with legacy U.S. cable systems, and supports Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) standards 55-1 and 55-2.

The reference designs are offered with either Conexant's CX24500 single-channel video decoder for mass market STB devices with PVR capabilities, or the CX2427X dual-channel device which is capable of decoding two HDTV programs simultaneously for picture-in-picture display, and supporting networked PVR for whole-house video solutions. Both of the decoders support key video compression standards including MPEG-2, MPEG-4 advanced video coding (AVC)/H.264, and VC-1.

The CX2427X and CX24500 are the industry's highest performance dual- and single-video decoders, and are based on a powerful ARM® 1176 processor. To further boost performance, the devices include double data rate memory (DDR2) interface with unified memory, an integrated level two (L2) cache, an advanced graphics rendering engine and Jazelle® Java hardware accelerator for improved Java performance, and reduced memory foot print.

The video decoders have several integrated features including three USB ports, audio digital-to-analog converters (DACs), multiple video outputs including HD multimedia interface (HDMI) 1.3 with high-bandwidth digital content protection (HDCP) 1.2, a Broadcast Television Systems Committee (BTSC) stereo encoder and channel 3/4 RF modulator, and two Ethernet media access controllers (MACs) with a media independent interface (MII). This enables future expansion for networking technologies such as MoCA, HomePlug® A/V, or 802.11 wireless networking. The reference designs also have a serial advanced technology attachment (SATA) interface that facilitates the transfer of data to and from hard disks for PVR applications.

Conexant offers a comprehensive suite of digital set-top components and system solutions for worldwide entertainment and broadcasting networks. The company's product offering includes silicon tuners, demodulators, MPEG audio and video decoders, and dial-up and DOCSIS modems.

The HD-AVC/DOCSIS references designs are available to qualifying customers.

13-day MA has crossed over the 50-day

Pennants are short-term continuation patterns that mark a small consolidation before the previous move resumes.

Pennant: A pennant is a small symmetrical triangle that begins wide and converges as the pattern matures (like a cone). The slope is usually neutral. Sometimes there will not be specific reaction highs and lows from which to draw the trend lines and the price action should just be contained within the converging trend lines.

Out of the Gate: Conexant Systems

Conexant Systems Shares Rise on CIBC Analyst Upgrade Citing Management Changes

NEW YORK (AP) -- Conexant Systems Inc., a maker of semiconductors used in broadband communications, rose in early trading Thursday after a CIBC World Markets Corp. analyst raised his rating on the stock, citing recent management changes and a low stock price.

Shares added 12 cents, or 10.5 percent, to $1.26.

Allan Mishan, in a client note, upgraded the stock to "Sector Outperformer" from "Sector Performer" with a $2 target price. The analyst noted shares fell recently -- the stock is down about 39 percent in the past six months.

The Newport Beach, Calif., company on Wednesday named Karen Roscher as chief financial officer, replacing J. Scott Blouin, who resigned to take another job.

"With a new CFO announced yesterday to join recently installed CEO Dan Artusi, we believe significant change including real restructuring is likely," wrote Mishan. Artusi became president and chief executive July 9.

A restructuring could generate cost savings of up to 10 percent to 15 percent, added Mishan.

1. Profile

Conexant Systems, Inc. (CNXT) designs, develops, and sells semiconductor system solutions for broadband communications worldwide. It offers semiconductor devices, software, and reference designs for use in broadband communications applications that enable high-speed transmission, processing, and distribution of audio, video, voice, and data to homes and business enterprises. The company's broadband access products include digital subscriber line products comprising digital signal processors, network or communication processors, integrated software on silicon, analog front-end chips, line drivers, and reference design guides. Its broadband media processing products comprise various broadcast audio and video decoder and encoder devices, as well as front-end communications components that capture, display, storage, playback, and transfer of audio and video content in digital home and small office products, such as personal computers, television set-top boxes, gaming consoles, personal video recorders, and digital versatile disk applications. The company offers universal access products, including analog modem chipsets that connects users to the Internet through their desktop and notebook personal computers; and dial-up modem chipset, which include mixed-signal intensive, controllerless modem chipsets, and software modem solutions. Its wireless networking products comprise radio frequency transceivers, analog base-band integrated circuits, digital base-band and media access controller chips, and reference design guides. The company sells its semiconductor products and system solutions directly to original equipment manufacturers of communication electronics products; indirectly through electronic components distributors; and to third-party electronic manufacturing service providers. It operates in North America, South America, Europe, Africa, the Asia-Pacific region, and the Middle East. The company was founded in 1996 and is headquartered in Newport Beach, California.

2. Stock price history

Nobody would thought, from just reading the profile of the company, that the chart since the IPO would look like the above.

I identify two major phases in CNXT, the run up of the technology bubble and the subsequent collapse. This is one of those stocks that never recovered ...

Fundamentally the company had $2.1 B in revenues in 2000 and just $970 M in 2006, so business declined over the years (even though it was up from a 2003 low of $599 M in revenues).

The company lost $2.4 B over the last five years, gee :o

2.1. Short term chart

Phase 1 happened because CNXT posted three quarters in a row of positive EBITDA (starting in Q2 2006) and even managed to show a very small positive net income number in Q4 2006.

It looked like the company was turning profitable ... but this was a turnaround that failed and Q1 and Q2 in 2007 showed sharp losses, again. So the stock came off to where it was before the run up.

Analysts expect revenues to decline and more losses in 2007 and 2008:

And who am I to say it's going to be different? Or, putting it in another way, what do I know about the company that gives me confidence that analysts' negative outlook is wrong? I know nothing.

The stock recently got a boost because the company changed its CFO to one which previously worked with FSL, which was acquired by BlackStone, so I guess that fueled some speculation she'll come to work on a sale of the company. This is hardly a sound fundamental reason to start an advance phase.

3. Conclusion

CNXT is currently a $670 M market cap company which lost $2.4 B over the past five years. Revenues are expected to shrink after a rebound in 2005 and 2006, to about 35% of what they were back in 2000, so this company isn't able to grow.

Even if it somehow turns profitable, I believe its margins will always be slim.

I guess shappyfish88 owns the stock, or is interested in it, so I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see anything that attracts me in CNXT.

Still holding and hoping for a good report next week for earnings. Chart is showing an uptrend forming and a good report will continue that trend.
Hope it will off the support it's now on and hold till report. If it can gain some good ground before earnings I'll probably get rid of it,,if not then I might hold till after earnings and hope for the best.

I guess shappyfish88 owns the stock, or is interested in it, so I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see anything that attracts me in CNXT.

Tomorrow I'll write about DUK on soxguy's request.

A closer look at the daily chart it displays a downtrend line broken to the upside with a respectable volume. From here we can expect a run to the $0.57 area and from there we could see an explosive upsurge to $0.78 and better. Stay tuned.
