MARLBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) -- Shares of a company that makes a colon cancer screening test that doesn't involve a colonoscopy have soared after the American Cancer Society recommended the test.
Shares of Marlborough, Massachusetts-based Exact Sciences Corp. were up 65 percent to $3.44 in midday trading Thursday.

Exact Sciences makes a noninvasive test in which a patient collects a stool sample at home and ships it to a lab for testing. The lab analyzes DNA from the sample to see whether mutations are present that could indicate colon cancer.

After markets closed Wednesday, the American Cancer Society recommended the test join the arsenal of screening mechanisms for colon cancer.

COLORECTAL CANCER SCREEN ADDED BY MA DEPT OF PUBLIC HEALTH: EXACT Sciences
Corporation (EXAS) announced that stool-based DNA (sDNA) screening for colorectal
cancer has been added as an approved colorectal cancer screening option to the Massachusetts
Care Coordination Program (MA-CCP) of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The
MA-CCP is a state and federally funded program for low-income men and women over age 40
seeking healthcare in Massachusetts. The program will be implemented in the first quarter of
calendar 2009 as part of a state-wide effort, by over 30 community health centers across Massachusetts,
to increase colorectal cancer screening among the approximately 12,000 MA-CCP
participants 50 years of age and older.

Sequenom offers $41 million for Exact

Sequenom offers $41 million to buy Exact Sciences in unsolicited offer


SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Sequenom Inc., which makes genetic analysis products, said Friday it is offering Exact Sciences Corp. $41 million in a move that would expand its testing products.
Marlborough, Mass.-based Exact makes a colon cancer screening test. The all-stock deal for $1.50 in Sequenom shares represents a 68.5 percent premium to Exact's closing price of 89 cents on Thursday. Sequenom made the offering public after the market closed.

Representatives at Exact could not be reached for comment late Friday.

Sequenom said the offer would be subject to a floating exchange rate within a 15 percent collar, in which the price of Sequenom's common stock is between $20.74 and $28.06 per share.

Shares of Sequenom fell 22 cents to $22.80 in after-hours trading, after falling $1.38, or 5.7 percent, to close at $23.02 during the regular session.

Meanwhile, shares of Exact rose 10 cents, or 11.2 percent, to close at 99 cents.

Company making cancer-screening tool moves to Wis.
Massachusetts company developing cancer-screening technology will move to Wisconsin

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- A company developing new technology to screen for colorectal cancer is moving from Massachusetts to Madison.

The Wisconsin Department of Commerce awarded the Exact Sciences Corp. a $1 million loan to help with the move.

The Marlboro, Mass.-based firm is developing molecular-screening technology to detect the disease, the second-leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the U.S.

Company President Kevin Conroy says the state aid is a critical part of the decision to relocate. As the former president of Third Wave Technologies in Madison, he says he knows the area is "a great place to build a biotechnology company."

State officials say the company is expected to create up to 150 jobs over five years.

American Cancer Society released its first consensus guidelines on cancer screening for those people at average risk for cancer and also for those without any specific symptoms. Only EXACT Sciences has a stool DNA test on the market.
