Microvision Signs Agreement with Motorola to Develop Pico Projector Display for Mobile Applications
Tuesday July 24, 6:01 am ET

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Microvision (Nasdaq: MVIS - News) today announced that it has signed an agreement with Motorola to develop pico projector display solutions for mobile applications leveraging Microvision's ultra-miniature laser based display engine, called PicoP(TM).

Tiny laser-based projectors are expected to enable a "big screen" viewing experience from mobile devices. By projecting content displayed on the device screen onto a wall, object or even a curved surface, mobile users could easily share Websites or multimedia applications such as movies, personal videos, mobile TV, photographs and presentations with friends or business colleagues.

"Motorola is committed to driving technology innovation that will enable the next generation of great consumer experiences," said Rob Shaddock, CTO, Motorola Mobile Devices business. "Working together with Microvision, we are pursuing ways that projection technology can redefine how mobile consumers view and interact with the media they take with them."

"With its slim form factor and low power requirements, Microvision's PicoP projector is optimized for the mobile environment," stated Alexander Tokman, President and CEO of Microvision. "We believe that our unique display technology, combined with Motorola's focus on delivering cool experiences, would allow mobile users to enhance their viewing of information and entertainment."

Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, however the companies revealed they will work together initially to integrate Microvision's latest PicoP projector inside a functioning mobile device for demonstration purposes. This prototype handset will utilize Microvision's new, WVGA (854 x 480 color pixels) wide angle scanner, first demonstrated in May 2007 at the Society of Information Display annual conference.

About Microvision: www.microvision.com

Microvision provides the PicoP display technology platform designed to enable next generation display and imaging products for pico projectors, vehicles displays, and wearable displays that interface to mobile devices. The company also manufactures and sells its bar code scanner product line which features the company's proprietary MEMS technology.

Ready to go again ?
Great Technology...
One of my favorite small cap technology companies.
The firms products are extremely cool and likely to be integrated into the mainstream eventually....the concepts at least, if not MVIS products.

Goodbye to Squinting at Mobile Phone Displays, Hello to...Pocket-sized Laser Projectors

REDMOND, Wash., Mar 28, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Microvision (MVIS, Trade) invites attendees of CTIA Wireless 2008 to test-drive its palm-sized, ultra-thin mobile laser projector prototype, code named SHOW(TM), at Booth 4411, from April 1-3 in Las Vegas.

Based on the company's PicoP display engine technology, SHOW has already attracted the interest and joint development initiatives of mobile handset device manufactures, carriers and content providers. As either a mobile device accessory--or embedded module in a handset--mobile devices that integrate Microvision's PicoP display engine into their products will be able to project any kind of digital content in a large, full-color, high-resolution format onto any surface.

"No more squinting at images and text on small mobile device screens. Consumers want a great big display that lets them project and share TV, digital photos, movies, and games--as well as browse the web--directly from their cell phones and other mobile devices. We invite CTIA attendees to experience the difference that a pocket-sized projector can make," says Alexander Tokman, president and CEO of Microvision.

Microvision will also demo at CTIA another laser-based product--its pocket scanner called ROV. An affordable Bluetooth-enabled barcode scanner for mobile workers, the ROV scanner delivers data directly into business applications on users' laptops, mobile phones, and PDAs.

AP
Projectors to Magnify Cell-Phone Cinema
Thursday April 3, 2:38 pm ET
By Peter Svensson, AP Technology Writer
Beam It Up: Tiny Projectors to Magnify Cell-Phone Cinema

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Recognizing that it's not much fun to watch movies on a tiny cell phone, a number of companies are racing to develop gadgets that project what's playing on the small screen onto walls, table cloths and other handy surfaces.

"Pico projectors" that are small enough to carry around in a shirt pocket are expected on the market later this year. Eventually, the technology will be tiny enough to be built into phones and portable media players, the companies say.

Microvision Inc., a small Redmond, Wash., company, was at the CTIA Wireless industry show this week to demonstrate a prototype of its projector. It's about the size of two full-size iPods, but by the time it goes on sale later this year, it should be about 30 percent smaller, said Russell Hannigan, the company's director of projector product management.

In a darkened room, the prototype beamed out surprisingly bright, crisp and large video from a connected iPod Nano: With the projector held 6 feet away from the wall, the image measured 6 feet diagonally and was as sharp as a DVD.

On the brightly lit showroom floor, the image was less impressive, but projected on a piece of paper held a foot away, it still made for a nice alternative to the iPod Nano's screen, which is slightly larger than a stamp.

The technology differs substantially from standard projectors: Microvision's unit shines red, green and blue lasers on a rapidly moving, 1-millimeter square mirror, which "paints" the picture line by line, so fast that it blends into one image.

Hannigan said it's highly energy-efficient and allows the company to dispense with the fans and vents that standard projectors have. The goal for the first projector is a 2.5-hour battery life.

Microvision Chief Executive Alexander Tokman expects the projector to sell for $300 to $400 through its partners, of which Motorola Inc. is the only one he was allowed to identify.

The company is also working on a projector so small that it can be built into cell phones, at least the more bulky models. That could be available in the second half of 2009. Because a cell phone already contains a battery and some of the other electronics that are necessary, this unit can be simpler and cheaper -- Tokman estimates it would increase the price of a cell phone by $100.

"The two things people are buying now are cell phones and big-screen TVs," Hannigan said. "This brings those two together."

3M Co. and Texas Instruments Inc. also have prototypes of pico projectors, and may be bringing them to market soon.

Another competitor is Alcatel-Lucent. Randy Giles, director of optical subsystems at the company's Bell Labs research arm, was at CTIA demonstrating a small projector that showed Disney's "Fantasia" from a Nokia N95 phone. The image was smaller and appeared dimmer than Microvision's, but Giles said a prototype that's 14 times brighter is in the lab. He too expects projectors to be built into handsets next year.

Alcatel-Lucent's projector uses lasers, like Microvision, but is otherwise more conventional, using a technology that's similar to liquid-crystal displays to block or let the light through to the screen.

So who would buy a pico projector? Microvision's Tokman said its research indicated that teenagers would be the big market.

"They would rather shut themselves in a dark room and project movies on the walls," he said. "They prefer this to spending time with their parents."

Microvision Reports First Quarter 2009 Results

Financial Results

For the three months ended March 31, 2009, the company reported revenue of $951,000 compared to $1.5 million in the fourth quarter of 2008 and $2.6 million for the first quarter of 2008. As of March 31, 2009, the backlog totaled $617,000 compared to $1.2 million at December 31, 2008 and $1.8 million at March 31, 2008. The decrease in revenue is primarily attributed to lower backlog at the beginning of 2009, which is a result of the company's strategy to focus most of its resources on commercializing PicoP products and decreased purchasing volume as a result of global economic conditions.

The company reported an operating loss for the quarter ended March 31, 2009 of $9.1 million compared to $10.2 million in the fourth quarter of 2008 and $7.1 million for the first quarter of 2008. The year-over-year increase is primarily attributable to lower revenue in 2009 and increased headcount and other research and development costs associated with the company's preparation for initial commercial introduction of its PicoP accessory product. The company took a number of steps to reduce its operational expenses and cash usage in the first quarter of 2009 and expects to see additional impact from those reductions in the second quarter of 2009 and beyond.

The company reported a net loss of $8.9 million, or $0.13 per share, for the quarter ended March 31, 2009 compared to $9.9 million, or $0.15 per share for the quarter ended December 31, 2008 and $5.0 million, or $0.09 per share, for the first quarter of 2008.

Net cash used in operating activities was $8.8 million for the quarter ended March 31, 2009 compared to $8.9 million for the fourth quarter of 2008 and $5.3 million for the first quarter of 2008. The company ended the quarter with $19.1 million in cash, cash equivalents, and investment securities.

PRINCETON, N.J., Aug 05, 2009 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Next Inning Technology Research ( http://www.nextinning.com ), an online investment newsletter focused on semiconductor and technology stocks, announced it has updated outlooks for Microvision (MVIS, Trade ), Diodes, Inc. (DIOD), Maxim Integrated Products (MXIM) and Microchip Technology (MCHP).

Editor Paul McWilliams has helped his subscribers generate huge returns on undervalued tech stocks in 2009. Out of the 80 stocks highlighted in his Undervalued Tech Stocks reports, 23 have produced returns greater than 70% and 12 have more than doubled year to date. All of these were ranked as either good "strategic" or "speculative" buys. The average return for all stocks ranked as either "speculative" or "strategic" buys was 66%, more than ten times the meager 6% return realized on stocks he suggested that investors avoid.

When asked what he saw differently, McWilliams said, "Picking the trend change was easy; there were very clear indicators we would see a rally start the week of March 9(th). However, picking the best stocks to own and those that should be avoided requires knowing not only the companies and the quality of their management teams, but understanding trends in technology well enough to explain them in simple terms."

Keeping things simple and direct is precisely what McWilliams does for Next Inning readers. To enjoy a free 21-day, no-risk sample of McWilliams picks and pans, please visit the following link:

McWilliams covers these topics and more in his earnings preview:

--  Does McWilliams think this is the year that things come together for
Microvision?  With the stock up 80% from when McWilliams alerted Next
Inning readers that at least one of the final pieces of the Microvision
story would come into play later in 2009, does he think it's time
to take some profits or that there is plenty more to come?

--  Diodes Inc. is up more than 330% from where McWilliams called it a buy
in a December 1st special report.  Has Diodes run too far too fast or
does McWilliams see the stock continuing to move higher?

--  Maxim has moved up 60% since December when McWilliams called it his
"favorite tech sector dividend play."  Does McWilliams
continue to see Maxim's dividend as a safe, steady payout?  Is the
        stock poised for further appreciation?

--  With near-term expectations set very low, is there a good chance that
Microchip will beat its calendar Q2 consensus and guide above the Q3
        consensus?

Founded in September 2002, Next Inning's model portfolio has returned 204% since its inception versus 11% for the S&P 500.
