Britesmile Rejects Acquisition Bid From Futuredontics, Shares Soar in Pre-Market Trading


NEW YORK (AP) -- Shares of tooth whitening operation Britesmile Inc. surged in pre-market trading Monday on news that the company rejected an acquisition offer from dental referral service Futuredontics Inc.
Shares rose $1.11 or 52 percent to $3.26 in electronic pre-market activity. The stock has traded in a 52-week range of 27 cents to $4.25, and closed the regular Friday Nasdaq SmallCap session at $2.15.

Privately held Futuredontics, which operates the hotline 1-800-DENTIST, offered Britesmile stockholders $4 per share in cash and stock on June 5.

Britesmile said Sunday it rejected the offer after Futuredontics said it couldn't afford the deal and because shareholders with a 55 percent stake in the company opposed the plan.

BriteSmile is headquartered in Walnut Creek, Calif. and operates a chain of 17 tooth-whitening clinics.
