Im a new trader so forgive me it this is a dumb question.

When a stock pays a dividend to the shareholders of record on ***** date.  What is considered a share holder of record?  Does the purchase of the stock have to be settled to be considered of record?

Also they will normally say to be paid on ***** date.  Do you still have to own the stock on that date?

Thanks for the help

Yes you need to held that stock by the end of that trading day. Dont know the settlement thing but for this it will be good to give a call to your broker.
