Jones Soda has a hearty following as an alternative soft drink, but a big reason for the company's success has been the placement of its bottled beverages within the Starbucks chain.
Pay more attention to timing. I think that this stock will drop back down a little, then rebound.

When Cramer asked Peter van Stolk to account for Jone's great quarter, van Stolk credited his team's hard work, strong sales and the introduction of the 12 ounce can; "I think the conversion to pure cane sugar is what's really taken it by the storm." Van Stolk said another advantage is "I can put [a photo] of your loved ones on a bottle of Jones Soda." Competitors Coca-Cola and Pepsi lack the patent.

Jones Soda Shares Soar on Launch, Hire
Monday April 2, 2:30 pm ET
Jones Soda Shares Rise As Company Launches Pure Cane Sugar Soda, Hires Executive

NEW YORK (AP) -- Jones Soda Co. shares soared Monday after the premium soft drink company announced a new hire and the official launch its pure cane sugar soda in bottles.
Jones Soda previously said it would change over all its soda to be sweetened with pure cane sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup, the sweetener Coca-Cola Co. and PepsiCo Inc. use in their carbonated soft drinks.

The company also recently announced it had received commitments from major retailers like Wal-Mart and Safeway to sell its new 12-ounce cans of sugar-sweetened soda. The commitments were part of a new distribution deal with National Beverage Corp.

The commitments from the retailers have helped the stock to surge about 48 percent since the retailers' names were announced March 8.

Monday's launch helped move the shares up another $1.82, or 9 percent, to $22.04 in heavy midday trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

The company also announced the hiring of Peter Burns as senior vice president of sales and marketing. Burns previously worked in a similar position at Izze Beverage Co., a private premium soda company that was acquired by PepsiCo in September. At Izze, Burns helped push sales to $20 million in less than two years, Jones Soda said.

Stifel Nicolaus & co. analyst Mark Swartzberg said the Burns hire will help move Jones Soda into its next phase.

"We believe that Mr. Burns' experience with Izze Beverage Company, a fast-growing, premium beverage company, will benefit Jones Soda as the company builds upon its sales and distribution capabilities," he wrote in a note to investors.

One of the smallest companies in the bottled beverage business was one of the biggest winners on Wall Street Monday.

Jones Soda announced on Monday a new 12 ounce bottled soda sweetened with pure cane sugar. The company reaffirmed its goal to convert the sweetener in all of its products to pure cane sugar from high fructose corn syrup.

The company also announced on Monday the appointment of Peter Burns, who comes from the Izze Beverage, as the new senior executive vice president of sales and marketing.

The next Coke of the 21st century!!

www.beanie11111.blogspot.com

---

- Piper Jaffray is increasing their tgt on Jones Soda (NASDAQ:JSDA) to $31 from $18 saying margin expansion is driving the model as the company potentially achieves 30% ACV in FY07 and 50% in FY08 of its premium private label brand. Firm believes that the initial pipeline fill is shipping and being shelved (targeted goal of Memorial Day) as expected.

The potential 2H07 "risk" remains as a sell-through period versus the 1H07 channel fill, which may be offset by marketing initiatives. The company continues to invest in human capital, most recently hiring Mr. Peter Burns as SVP of Sales/Marketing.

Piper expects Jones Soda to also invest in its brand through product line launches or extensions, over time.

They are maintaining their FY07 EPS estimate of $0.21. They are also increasing their FY08 EPS estimate by $0.10 to $0.45 based on total revenue growth of 40.8% to $69.4 million versus $63.0 million prior (and conservatively flat gross margin). Reiterates Outperform.

snowcat

In the tradition of their "Turkey and Giblets" flavored soda for Thanksgiving, they had a big hit when they offered "Matzo and Brisket" flavored soda for Passover!

This stock is more HANS than Coke.  Coke is a monster and besides , the facination in this company is its small size and potential - based on its clever marketing and innovative flavors.

A small company is adaptable to the market and can try many new things - like putting photos of drinkers on the bottles (the series of potential father's of Anna Nicole Smith's baby sounds like a winner) and using pure sugar are the type of ideas that attract attention from Wall St. and are hip (at least until I found out).

With rising corn prices, it may be economical now for a small co to look into sugar instead of corn syrup, but for Coke, it would have a massive impact on the markets (sugar tariffs make it prohibitively expensive to import enough - and we grow corn, not sugar).

The company looks like it is sticking to its plan.  Gee - I once owned this co at $2 and sold it at $3 - thought I was a genius.  I also think I owned it at $8 and sold it at $5, but I forgot to tell my wife about that time.

In the meantime, the chart and the mo look like they will elevate this company further - and btw, if you are waiting for a base or a pullback, there were not too many on the HANS rocket.

This is no Coke - and hopefully not a Bravo either, but it looks like it is good for a few more points.

Jones Soda Tries To Go Mainstream With Its Boutique Soft Drinks
Wednesday April 11, 7:00 pm ET
Marilyn Alva

It took pride in being "the little guy," but now Jones Soda aims to go up against the big soft-drink guys.
Jones-branded canned carbonated drinks are now being placed on store shelves of 25 major retail chains, including Wal-Mart (NYSE:WMT - News) supercenters, Safeway (NYSE:SWY - News), Kroger (NYSE:KR - News), Kmart, a unit of Sears Holdings (NasdaqGS:SHLD - News), Costco (NasdaqGS:COST - News) in Southern California and Albertsons' Intermountain, Florida and Denver divisions.

It's a major shift meant to put the $40 million drink firm into a much larger market. From the $500 million premium beverage category, it'll now play in the $66 billion soft-drink market.

Until its recent initiative, Jones Soda (NasdaqCM:JSDA - News) had specialized mostly in premium, bottled carbonated soft drinks with different flavors and unique labels.

Jones supplied Target (NYSE:TGT - News) with canned sodas in an exclusive two-year deal that ended in December. Target will still buy the canned sodas, along with other retailers.

Potential

"Simply by placing the product where more people shop, it will dramatically expand the distribution and sales potential," said James Maher, analyst with ThinkEquity Partners.

Target accounts for about 2% of U.S. soda volume in the U.S. But the 25 retailers Jones signed up account for 25% of the soda market.

By selling only the concentrate, which is relatively cheap to make and comes with higher margins, more dollars will likely pour down to the bottom line.

Analysts polled by Thomson Financial estimate Jones' earnings will jump 69% this year to 22 cents a share and move up another 77% the next year.

Maher figures that concentrate sales to National Beverage Corp. (AMEX:FIZ - News) will over time make up more than half of the company's case sales.

National Beverage has agreed to produce and distribute more than 35 million cases a year of Jones' canned sodas for the U.S. market.

Jones already got a boost from early concentrate shipments to National Beverage in the fourth quarter, when margins jumped to 47.4% from 36.6% the year earlier. Net income rose 256% to $2.1 million, while per-share earnings grew 167% to 8 cents a share.

Case sales in 2006 about doubled from 2005 due in part to concentrate sales in the fourth quarter. Revenue for the full year rose 16.5% to $39 million.

Jones' share price bolted March 9 after the company disclosed the names of the 25 new retailers signed on for its new canned sodas.

Those retailers are expected to have the sodas on store shelves by Memorial Day.

The new canned soda line goes by the name Jones Pure Cane Soda to stress that the drinks are sweetened with pure cane sugar rather than the high fructose corn syrup used in most other soft drinks.

Chief Executive Peter Van Stolk told analysts in a conference call that the use of pure cane sugar -- which is perceived by some consumers as a tad better than high fructose corn syrup -- will help Jones "stand out from the other players in this space." He was unavailable for comment.

At the same time, Jones plans to sweeten all its bottled soft drinks with cane sugar. But the cane sugar might not be a point 15f distinction for too long.

"There are a number of companies now experimenting or beginning to use pure-cane sugar," said John Sicher, editor and publisher of Beverage Digest.

He says Cadbury-Schweppes (NYSE:CSG - News) just began a test in the Midwest using cane sugar in Dr Pepper. And he notes that PepsiCo (NYSE:PEP - News) plans to introduce a "Pepsi Natural" version later this year using cane sugar.

"Companies are always looking for ways to differentiate their products and attract new consumer attention," Sicher said.

The canned sodas come in various flavors such as green apple and lemon drop. "Their flavors are different, so they have a good opportunity to compete with the other colas," Maher said.

Still, it's too early to draw conclusions since the rollout is not yet complete. "That's the piece of the puzzle that has yet to be demonstrated," Maher said.

To help get the word out, Jones is launching its first TV ad campaign this spring, touting its "better soda."

The company has no intention of phasing out its hallmark long-neck glass bottles, which feature photo labels submitted by customers. But it recently expanded into plastic bottles with a noncarbonated multivitamin enhanced drink called 24C. A broad launch is set for the second quarter.

Mainstream

"There's no doubt Jones is becoming mainstream, but in a premium sense," said Piper Jaffray analyst Nicole Miller. While the new canned soda program is a big deal for Jones, it's not "the end game," she says.

"The reason this model works is because it's a portfolio of branded products. We expect product extensions and new product launches over time," Miller said.

Jones Soda's drink portfolio also includes organic teas, natural juices and a Whoop Ass-branded energy drink. The firm licenses its name for a line of hard candies sold by Big Sky Brands.

$$ Jones Soda Still Has Fizz.......

Jones Soda won't quit. Why should it? One of the big knocks against the company is that carbonation, as a category, is awful and no company in the category can buck it. But this week we have analysts talking about how carbonated beverages could be getting some life. If that's the case, you could have Jones going up off the category growth or from the possibility that the larger soda companies want to bulk up and add more product lines (don't forget private equity and Cott are talking about buying Cadbury's beverages. This group is hot.) All of this works because Jones has just gone with the business model -- sell the syrup nationally in unusual venues rather than bottle for Target only -- and the margins could explode. This is a stock that will remain in the news positively until it becomes a billion-dollar company too big to acquire.

CHICAGO, Apr 10, 2007 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Zacks.com announces the latest list of top performing Zacks #1 Rank (Strong Buy) stocks. The stocks on the prestigious list with the highest returns last week were Jones Soda Co. (JSDA), U.S. Physical Therapy, Inc. (USPH), Acorda Therapeutics, Inc. (ACOR), Crocs, Inc. (CROX) and DryShips Inc. (DRYS). Each of these stocks easily outperformed the S&P 500.

Stocks ranked #1 (Strong Buy) by Zacks have produced an average annual return of +31.8% since inception in 1988. During the 2000-2002 bear market, Zacks #1 Rank stocks gained 43.8% while the S&P 500 tumbled 37.6%. To learn more about the Zacks Rank, go to http://at.zacks.com/?id=3172.

Here is a synopsis of the last week's best performing Zacks #1 Rank stocks.

Jones Soda Co. (JSDA) led all other Zacks #1 Rank companies last week with a gain of 26.3%. On Apr 2, shares for the premium soda company jumped after launching its 12 ounce bottled soda sweetened with pure cane sugar. The company believes that the transition to pure cane sugar will further solidify its leadership position as a result of the better taste, enhanced health benefits and positive perception of the new beverage line.

Jones Soda has displayed positive momentum of late. The company was featured as a top-performing Zacks #1 Rank company on Mar 16 as well, after reporting a 700% positive earnings surprise in its fourth quarter. In addition, revenue during the period advanced 15%. Earnings estimates for this year are now at 19 cents, up 46.1% from 13 cents 30 days ago.

U.S. Physical Therapy, Inc. (USPH) is a national operator of physical and occupational therapy outpatient clinics, which gained 12.14% last week. The earnings estimate for this year from the one analyst covering this company has improved six cents, or approximately 8.6%, over the past month.

Last month, U.S. Physical Therapy announced fourth-quarter earnings, after discontinued operations, of 18 cents per share, compared to 14 cents a year earlier. Revenue improved to $33.9 million from $32.3 million, thanks to a 5.7% increase in patient visits and an advance of 19 cents in average net patient revenue per visit to $96.09.

Acorda Therapeutics, Inc. (ACOR) is still expected to post a loss for this year, but the expectation has narrowed by 10 cents over the past two months to a loss of $1.28. The biotechnology company gained 10.4% last week to become one of the top-performing Zacks #1 Rank companies. In its fourth-quarter report from late February, Acordia Therapeutics announced a loss of 30 cents per share, marking a significant narrowing from the previous year's loss of approximately $75. The result also bettered the consensus by almost 12%.

Shares of Crocs, Inc. (CROX) advanced 9.55% last week, making the innovative footwear retailer one of the top-performing Zacks #1 Rank companies. Earnings estimates for this year increased 15% over the past two months to $2.39 from $2.07.

The company made big news in late February with a strong fourth-quarter performance. Earnings per share of 51 cents surged year over year from 12 cents, and also topped the consensus by approximately 18.6%. Revenues jumped 236% to $112.9 million from $33.6 million in the fourth-quarter of 2005. For the full year, EPS and revenues advanced 215.7% and 226.6% respectively. Crocs also raised its fiscal 2007 EPS and revenue growth targets. The company has come back to earth from its all-time high in early February, but its performance last week suggests that the retailer's future remains bright.

DryShips Inc. (DRYS), an international provider of drybulk carriers, announced on Apr 4 its eighth consecutive quarterly cash dividend of 20 cents per share since its listing on the NASDAQ Global Market in February 2005. In late March, the company continued with its strategy of fleet expansion and renewal. Through the purchase of two vessels and the disposal of another pair, the company will have a fleet of 34 vessels with an average of 9.3 years, which is well below the industry average of 12.6 years.

In its fourth quarter, DryShips announced earnings per share, excluding a gain, of 77 cents, which bettered the consensus by approximately 2.7%. Revenue also improved on a year-over-year basis. Shares for this Zacks #1 Rank company advanced 8.34% last week. Earnings estimates for this year are up 8.2% over the past two months, including an advance of 2.5% in the past 30 trading days.
