LEIDEN, Netherlands, Jun 10, 2005 (PRIMEZONE via COMTEX) -- Dutch biotechnology company Crucell N.V. (Euronext:CRXL) (CRXL) today announces the discovery of a monoclonal antibody for protection against West Nile virus. Study results have demonstrated that the fully human monoclonal antibody, derived from patients who survived West Nile infection, effectively neutralized the virus in cell culture and fully protected mice from an otherwise lethal infection.

AMSTERDAM, June 10 (Reuters) - Dutch biotechnology firm Crucell ((CRCL.AS))(CRXL,Trade) said on Friday it had discovered a human antibody for protection against West Nile virus that has proven effective in animal studies.

"Study results have demonstrated that the fully human monoclonal antibody, derived from patients who survived West Nile infection, effectively neutralized the virus in cell culture and fully protected mice from an otherwise lethal infection," Crucell said in a statement.

Crucell shares gained on the news, rising 4.4 percent to 17 euros, their highest level since October 2000, the month of their initial public offering.

The company, which has never reported a profit, has reported significant progress in developing vaccines against Ebola, the West Nile Virus and SARS.

Crucell's West Nile virus vaccine development programme is due to enter clinical trials at the end of this year.

Since appearing in New York in 1999, the West Nile virus has spread by mosquitos throughout the United States. In 2004, there were 2,470 recorded cases of the disease and 88 fatalities caused by a form of encephalitis, or inflammation of the brain.

Crucell N.V.: Merck and Co., Inc. Exercises Option on PER.C6 License for Adenovirus-based Vaccine Against Hepatitis C
Monday October 10, 2:17 am ET

LEIDEN, Netherlands, Oct. 10, 2005 (PRIMEZONE) -- Dutch biotechnology company Crucell N.V. (Euronext:CRXL) (NasdaqNM:CRXL - News) announced today that Merck & Co., Inc. (NYSE:MRK - News) has exercised its option to use Crucell's PER.C6(r) production technology to develop an adenovirus-based vaccine against hepatitis C (HCV). Crucell will receive a US$ 1 million (0.8 million) exercise fee with the prospect of annual fees and milestone payments, plus royalties on net sales.

Merck already uses PER.C6(r) technology for its adenovirus-based HIV vaccine, currently in proof-of-concept Phase II trials.

``It is extremely satisfying to see that PER.C6(r) can play a role in the fight against such a widespread and serious infection as hepatitis C,'' said Dr. Ronald Brus, Crucell's Chief Executive Officer. ``There is no question that the world needs a vaccine against HCV.''

Under the terms of the agreement, Crucell has retained 'co-exclusive' rights which provide the Company with the option of developing or co-developing its own HCV vaccine. ``Crucell believes that, as with diseases like HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB, adenovirus-based vaccines may prove to be a fruitful approach for HCV because of their ability to induce both cellular and humoral immunity and the scalability that our PER.C6(r) technology can provide,'' explained the Company's Chief Scientific Officer Dr. Jaap Goudsmit.

About HCV

Hepatitis C is a disease of the liver caused by the hepatitis C virus (HCV). HCV is spread primarily by direct contact with human blood, with intravenous drug use employing contaminated needles being among the causes of transmission. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that approximately 200 million people, 3% of the world's population, are infected with HCV, with 3-4 million people newly infected each year. About 85% of infected people become chronically infected and 70% develop chronic hepatitis, putting them at risk of developing cirrhosis of the liver or liver cancer. WHO estimates that hepatitis C is an epidemic disease in 131 countries around the world, and is responsible for 50-76% of all liver cancer cases and two-thirds of all liver transplants in the developed world. No vaccine currently exists for the prevention of HCV infection.

About Crucell

UPDATE 1-Crucell leaps after Merck deal on hepatitis vaccine
Mon Oct 10, 2005 05:03 AM ET
By Karl Emerick Hanuska and Lucas van Grinsven
AMSTERDAM, Oct 10 (Reuters) - Shares in Crucell (CRCL.AS: Quote, Profile, Research) hit a high for the year on Monday after news that pharmaceuticals giant Merck & Co. (MRK.N: Quote, Profile, Research) will use the Dutch biotech firm's technology to develop a vaccine against hepatitis C.

Traders and analysts said the announcement by Crucell (CRXL.O: Quote, Profile, Research) -- whose PER.C6 gene technology aims at using human cells as a platform to produce drugs and vaccines -- gave further evidence that the firm was on its way to turning a profit.

Merck is already using PER.C6 for its adenovirus-based HIV vaccine, which is currently in proof-of-concept Phase II or mid-stage trials.

"This deal with Merck is another milestone in the development of Crucell," said one Dutch trader.

"News like this continues to come out of the company that points to good demand for PER.C6 and to money coming in and to Crucell turning a profit."

Under the the terms of the deal with Merck, which is exercising an option to use the PER.C6 technology, Crucell will receive a $1 million exercise fee with the prospect of annual fees and milestone payments, plus royalties on net sales.

Merck intends to use PER.C6 to develop an adenovirus-based vaccine against hepatitis C -- a liver disease caused by a virus that infects around 200 million people.

Adenoviruses infect tissue linings of the respiratory tract, eyes, intestines and urinary tract.

They have significant potential for the development of vaccines and gene therapy because they can be genetically altered to stimulate an immune response in humans.

No vaccine exists to prevent hepatitis C infection but there are treatments available that are effective in about half of all cases, according to the U.S. Department of Health.

Shares in Crucell, which has reported significant progress in developing vaccines against Ebola, the West Nile Virus and SARS, were up 6.9 percent at 24.70 euros by 0853 GMT, after touching 25.40 euros in early trade.

The shares are up more than 130 percent since the start of the year.

While Crucell has yet to turn a profit, licensing deals and service fees are providing funding until final approval of its first products, expected within five years.

Crucell was floated in 2000 and ended its oncology programme in 2003. It then redirected the focus of its antibody discovery group to infectious diseases, a decision that initially scared off some investors but which now seems to be paying off.

Quotehistory repeats itself maybe one more time? what do you think 35-ish??

I have a longer time horizon with my CRXL investment, but yeah I think $35 based on that chart you posted is reasonable. I first bought CRXL at $3.50 back in August 2003 but sold it at $3.97. Wish I was still holding those shares!! Then rode it from $9.50 to $22.50 and sold. Currently in at $22 and holding.

Here are some words of wisdom from Trudy the Monkey, who's a regular on the Yahoo message board:

> Do you have a target for CRXl for the end of the year of
> eighteen months or someting? Do you think it is stil
> capable of major movement, or is the big move over?

Trudy is a very patient monkey when it comes to CRXL. Someone asked
her the target, and she said "2010!" When they asked further, she
said "that's a year or a dollar amount, depending which comes first."

So as an investment strategy, Trudy is accumulating more CRXL, and
holding quite long term.

Really, it is dependent on two orthogonal factors:
(1) the reality of their business success
(2) market perception

Trudy has almost complete confidence in the success of their
business, in fact she thinks they are already well on the way to
revolutionizing the $8 billion vaccine market. The Sanofi Pasteur
deal is certainly their most solid foundation. But they have many
other things going on.

But perception is 9/10ths of the law with stock markets: the share
price could do anything based purely on market mood swings,
publicity, manipulation, etc. Stock markets are run by humans, who
suffer from a missing 24th chromosome pair. Stocks aren't always
priced as they should be.
