CHATSWORTH, Calif., Aug 11, 2008 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Capstone Turbine Corporation (www.microturbine.com;) (CPST, Trade), today reported operating results for its first quarter ended June 30, 2008 in its Quarterly Report on Form 10-Q filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Financial Summary

Capstone's backlog at the end of the first quarter was $42.7 million, an increase of approximately $14.8 million, or 53%, from the prior quarter and an increase of approximately $37.4 million, or 706%, from the end of the prior year comparable quarter.

"I am extremely pleased with the $20 million in new product orders received during the first quarter as it represents more than our entire product revenue in Fiscal 2007 and 92% of our product revenue in Fiscal 2008," stated Darren Jamison, Capstone's President and Chief Executive Officer. "Additionally, the current backlog at the end of the first quarter exceeds Fiscal 2008 total revenue by 32%," added Jamison.

Capstone's revenue for the first quarter ended June 30, 2008 was $7.5 million, an increase of approximately 34% from the same period last year. Capstone shipped 89 units in the first quarter of Fiscal 2009, compared to 77 units in the same period last year.

The reported gross loss for the first quarter was $1.1 million, or 15% of revenue, compared to $2.5 million, or 44% of revenue, from the same period last year. The decrease in the gross loss and corresponding improvement in the gross loss percentage reflects increased sales of both C30 and C60 Series units along with reduced warranty expense and higher absorption of overhead costs into ending inventory, offset by increased manufacturing expenses.

Research and development costs were $2.0 million for the first quarter, a decrease of $0.7 million, or 26%, from the same period last year. R&D expenses are reported net of benefits from cost-sharing programs. There were approximately $2.0 million of such benefits this quarter and no such benefits for the same period last year. The overall net decrease in R&D expenses resulted from additional funding from UTC Power Corporation for the cost-sharing program for our C200 commercialization, offset by increased spending for supplies, consulting and facility expense.

Selling, general and administrative costs were $6.9 million for the first quarter, an increase of $1.0 million, or 17%, from the same period last year. The net increase in SG&A expenses was comprised of an increase in non-cash stock compensation and travel, labor, marketing and facility expense, offset by decreased professional services and consulting expenses. The increase in travel and marketing costs reflected the continued effort in developing worldwide distributors and launching the C200 and C1000 Series products.

Capstone's net loss was $9.8 million, or $0.07 per share, for the first quarter, a decrease of $0.6 million from the $10.4 million loss, or $0.07 per share, reported for the same period last year.

Cash balances decreased by $9.9 million during the first quarter of Fiscal 2009. As of June 30, 2008, cash and cash equivalents were $32.7 million.

Capstone Signs First C1000 Factory Protection Plan Pushing Long Term Service Backlog Over $11 Million
On Tuesday June 9, 2009, 4:10 pm EDT

CHATSWORTH, Calif., June 9, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Capstone Turbine Corporation (http://www.capstoneturbine.com/; Nasdaq:CPST - News), the world's leading clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, today announced that it has signed a contract for its first C1000 long term Factory Protection Plan (FPP) for three C1000 systems recently shipped to Aquatec-Maxcon Pty Ltd, its distributor for the Australian market. The three unit order will soon be installed at a major coal seam gas producer in a reverse osmosis water system application.

This C1000 FPP contract is valued in excess of $2 million dollars over a 10 year period. This latest contract pushed the total FPP backlog over $11 million dollars as of May 31, 2009. Capstone launched the FPP program approximately two years ago to improve the reliability and service of its microturbine solutions. Typical FPP service contracts vary in length from a minimum of one year to a maximum of 11 years with most FPP contracts covering between five and nine years. Customer payments are generally received quarterly in advance over the term of the FPP.

"This latest contract puts the total number of C30, C65, C200 and C1000 Series microturbines under FPP contracts in excess of 400 units as of May 31, 2009," said Shelby Ahmann, Capstone's Senior Vice President of Customer Service. "Capstone's goal is to get as many new C200 and C1000 Series products as possible into the Factory Protection Program to guarantee product performance and system reliability," added Ahmann.

"This first C1000 FPP contract is the kilowatt equivalent of putting 100 C30's under an FPP contract, and I am pleased with the customer response to our new C200 and C1000 Series products as we look to have as many units under FPP as possible," stated Capstone's President and Chief Executive Officer, Darren Jamison. "The benefit of Capstone's FPP program is that customers can plan for product life cycle costs and obtain optimum product performance from scheduled maintenance performed by trained technicians," added Jamison.

The C1000 is a robust one megawatt power system, containing five Capstone C200 microturbine engines. It is configured in a single compact ISO size container and provides the same low emissions, low noise and extended maintenance benefits of Capstone's C30 and C65 Series products.

Photo Release -- Capstone C30 Successfully Integrated Into Ford Vehicle by Langford Performance Engineering Ltd.
On Thursday June 11, 2009, 8:00 am EDT

CHATSWORTH, Calif., June 11, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Capstone Turbine Corporation (http://www.capstoneturbine.com/; Nasdaq:CPST - News), the world's leading clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, today announced that its C30 liquid fueled microturbine has been successfully integrated into a Ford S-Max people carrier in the United Kingdom.

A photo accompanying this release is available at http://www.globenewswire.com/newsroom/prs/?pkgid=6263

To see a promotional video of the "Whisper" please click on the following link: http://www.capstoneturbine.com/whisper_promo.wmv

Langford Performance Engineering (www.lpengines.com), headquartered in Wellingborough England, designed and modified the Ford S-Max seven seat crossover vehicle into a series hybrid plug in vehicle with a C30 under the hood as an electric range extender. Langford reports that the "Whisper Eco-Logic" car gets up to 80 mpg in early stage demonstration testing.

"The Ford modified by Langford is an extremely practical solution and one that Langford has been working on for over two years," said Jim Crouse, Capstone's Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing. "The design characteristics of Capstone's turbine permits ultra low emissions, high fuel economy, multi fuel capability, no coolants or lubricating oil, and little to no maintenance in an automotive application," added Crouse.

"Our Whisper Eco-Logic vehicle is a plug in electric car with an on board turbine generator to keep the batteries charged and extend the range of the car beyond that of a typical electric vehicle," said Dick Langford, Langford's Founder and Managing Director. "This sets it apart from the hybrids now available such as the Lexus and Toyota which use conventional 4 stroke engines to provide both vehicle drive and battery charging. In early demonstration testing the car is getting up to 80 miles per gallon and travels 40 miles on electric power before the Capstone turbine generator starts up and charges the lithium ion batteries," added Langford.

"Capstone was founded on the concept of a C30 powering hybrid vehicles so it is extremely gratifying to see the Langford Ford with a C30 under the hood," stated Darren Jamison, Capstone's President and Chief Executive Officer. "Langford did an exceptional job integrating the turbine, power electronics and batteries into the vehicle without impacting any of the seven seats or increasing the overall vehicle weight," added Jamison.

Langford Engineering will be marketing and demonstrating the plug in hybrid vehicle in hopes of further developing this concept with a suitable automotive partner who could commercialize the product for U.S. use and capitalize on a portion of the Obama administration's $2.4 billion outlined in the stimulus fund to get more electric vehicles on U.S. roads.

Capstone Receives Order for Three C800 Microturbines for Brazilian Wastewater Treatment Plant

CHATSWORTH, Calif., Aug. 24, 2009 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Capstone Turbine Corporation (www.capstoneturbine.com; Nasdaq:CPST - News), the world's leading clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, today announced it received an order for three C800 microturbine systems for a large wastewater treatment plant in Brazil.

The total order value is in excess of two million dollars and is the first sale of Capstone C800 microturbines in South America.

Fluxo Servicios de Petroleo, Capstone's distributor in Brazil, ordered the three C800 microturbines for a wastewater treatment plant that serves two cities and millions of residents. The microturbines will run on methane created during the treatment process.

The plant, which treats 4,500 liters of sewage per second, will use the ultra low-emission microturbines in a combined heat and power (CHP) application. In addition to producing 2.4 megawatts of electricity to power the plant's equipment and buildings, the excess heat produced by the methane fueled microturbines will help maintain the proper temperature in the plant's onsite digester used to breakdown sewage.

"Clean-burning, low-emission microturbines are well suited to use biogas as a fuel," said Darren Jamison, Capstone President and Chief Executive Officer. "Many wastewater treatment plants, landfills and agricultural operations flare waste methane gas into the atmosphere, which increases greenhouse gas emissions and global warming. Capstone microturbines are an ideal solution because they use the biogas to produce reliable, clean renewable energy onsite."

"Wastewater treatment in Brazil is a key issue in the country's efforts to continuously improve water quality," said Hideo Hama, President of Fluxo Servicios de Petroleo, Capstone's Brazilian distributor. "In addition, Brazil is working to diversify its energy supplies beyond hydroelectric and increase electrical efficiency. That's where renewable energy sources such as biogas fueled Capstone microturbines can play a key role in helping meet these renewable energy needs."

The new C800 product provides the same ultra low-emissions and low maintenance benefits as other Capstone products. It features Capstone's patented air bearing, remote monitoring and diagnostic capabilities, and integrated utility synchronization and protection. The small, modular systems allow for easy and low cost installation. Five and nine year Factory Protection Plans ("FPP") also are available, providing customers with fixed maintenance costs over the term of the FPP.

Will 2010 Be Capstone's Turnaround Year?

Less than nine years ago, shares of Capstone Turbine (Nasdaq: CPST) crested at almost $100 on hopes that the California-based microturbine maker would revolutionize ultra-low-emission, ultra-low-maintenance power generation technology. When things didn't quite work out that way, shares plummeted. Since those heady days, the stock has dropped a staggering 99%. But a turnaround could be in the making.

In its most recent quarter, Capstone's sales grew by 83% to $13.7 million, due largely to higher prices for its products, while total operating expenses fell significantly due to reductions in research and development and general overhead. Until taking a hit for changes in the fair value of its warrant liability, Capstone had everything in place for a good quarter. However, after the $5.2 million charge, net losses landed at $15.3 million, or $0.08 per share, missing analysts' estimates by $0.03 per share.

Turnaround time?
Despite the charge, it was an eventful quarter for Capstone, and it marks the start of what could be a historic year for the clean energy corporation that has never earned a profit since it became a publicly listed company. CEO Darren Jamison declared: "I believe fiscal 2009 was best described as Capstone's year of growth, while I believe fiscal 2010 will best be described as Capstone's year of cost reduction, working capital improvement, and positive cash flow."

These words are nothing trivial to anyone familiar with the Capstone story, especially in a calendar year its strategic partnership with United Technologies (NYSE: UTX) ended. United Technologies wasn't just one of its biggest customers -- its UTC Power subsidiary also provided Capstone with R&D funding benefits through its cost-sharing program.

Politics or profit
Jamison's words might be rhetoric aimed at rekindling downtrodden investors' hope in the company's future, but I believe they hold merit. Capstone's overall backlog has only decreased by 6% in the past three months to about 67.4 megawatts, which means that while the weak economy is dragging down spending across the board, Capstone's products continue to get support from its customers.

Meanwhile, over the next three quarters, management is confident in its plans to increase its average selling prices, as its price hike of 14% on its C1000 model fully takes effect. Furthermore, the company will take action to achieve 30% cost reduction. All of this is obviously very exciting news for Capstone.

And like other alternative energy investments like First Solar (Nasdaq: FSLR) or Energy Conversion Devices (Nasdaq: ENER), Capstone stands for something in which you can believe: a cleaner tomorrow. So if you're in the market for a speculative stock that's overdue for a turnaround, consider Capstone Turbine.

Is Capstone Turbine the Perfect Stock?

Everyone would love to find the perfect stock. But will you ever really find a stock that gives you everything you could possibly want?

One thing's for sure: If you don't look, you'll never find truly great investments. So let's first take a look at what you'd want to see from a perfect stock, and then decide if Capstone Turbine (Nasdaq: CPST) fits the bill.

The quest for perfection
When you're looking for great stocks, you have to do your due diligence. It's not enough to rely on a single measure, because a stock that looks great based on one factor may turn out to be horrible in other ways. The best stocks, however, excel in many different areas, which all come together to make up a very attractive picture.

Some of the most basic yet important things to look for in a stock are:

•Growth. Expanding businesses show healthy revenue growth. While past growth is no guarantee that revenue will keep rising, it's certainly a better sign than a stagnant top line.

•Margins. Higher sales don't mean anything if a company can't turn them into profits. Strong margins ensure a company is able to turn revenue into profit.

•Balance sheet. Debt-laden companies have banks and bondholders competing with shareholders for management's attention. Companies with strong balance sheets don't have to worry about the distraction of debt.

•Money-making opportunities. Companies need to be able to turn their resources into profitable business opportunities. Return on equity helps measure how well a company is finding those opportunities.

•Valuation. You can't afford to pay too much for even the best companies. Earnings multiples are simple, but using normalized figures gives you a sense of how valuation fits into a longer-term context.

•Dividends. Investors are demanding tangible proof of profits, and there's nothing more tangible than getting a check every three months. Companies with solid dividends and strong commitments to increasing payouts treat shareholders well.

With those factors in mind, let's take a closer look at Capstone.

Capstone weighs in with a score of 4. That's not perfect, and Capstone shareholders have been waiting a long time for the company's potential to translate into higher stock prices.

Capstone makes low-emission microturbines, which have long been seen as a potential game-changer in alternative energy. At various times in its history, its working relationship with United Technologies (NYSE: UTX) and an experiment with its products at Wal-Mart (NYSE: WMT) store locations seemed to hold promise for Capstone's eventual success.

But the company has had financial issues for years. Bad margins and high cash-burn rates have plagued Capstone throughout its history. Most importantly, the company has never turned a profit.

Recently, the stock popped off its lows on news that General Electric (NYSE: GE) had acquired some assets and intellectual property related to waste-heat recovery from Calnetix, but the only change for Capstone is that GE will be their new supplier. Even with a big rise in recent months, the stock still trades under $1.

Capstone has never recovered from the huge shellacking its stock took during the tech bust. Despite its interesting technology, the company needs to achieve something significant to start generating revenue, cash flow, and net profit before it has any chance of becoming a perfect stock.

Keep searching
No stock is a sure thing, but some stocks are a lot closer to perfect than others. By looking for the perfect stock, you'll go a long way toward improving your investing prowess and learning how to separate out the best investments from the rest.

Capstone Turbine Corporation Receives Order for C600 and C1000 From Wastewater Treatment Plant in York, Pennsylvania

Press Release Source: Capstone Turbine Corporation On Thursday December 16, 2010, 8:30 am EST

CHATSWORTH, Calif., Dec. 16, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Capstone Turbine Corporation (www.capstoneturbine.com) (Nasdaq:CPST - News), the world's leading clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, received an order for a C600 and C1000 that will be installed at the City of York Wastewater Treatment Plant in York, Pennsylvania.

The York City Sewer Authority and its partner municipalities will hold a groundbreaking ceremony today for the plant's new combined heat and power (CHP) system, which will be fully operational summer 2011.

As part of the CHP system, the methane-fueled C600 simultaneously will supply 600 kilowatts of electricity for the facility and create hot water to heat the building and the site's two 98-degree Fahrenheit anaerobic digesters used in the waste-treatment process.

The plant, which serves more than 170,000 residents in eight municipalities, will use the C1000 to generate more power when the plant's demand for electricity rises, and for peak shaving several hours each day.

"Peak shaving allows a facility to lower electricity costs by producing power onsite when utility rates rise," said Jeff Beiter, Managing Partner at E-Finity Distributed Generation, the exclusive Capstone Mid-Atlantic Distributor that secured the order.

York officials expect the new cogeneration facility will generate more than 2.5 million kilowatts of electricity, reduce energy costs approximately $278,000 per year and lower carbon dioxide emissions by more than 1.5 million pounds annually. The clean-and-green Capstone turbines replaced old, high-emission reciprocating engines that had operated since 1988.

For years, the wastewater treatment plant flared waste methane gas produced during the treatment process. Unfortunately, methane has a greenhouse-gas impact on the atmosphere 21 times that of carbon dioxide.

"City of York officials understand the benefits of low-emission microturbine technology, especially when used in a combined heat and power or peak shaving application," said Jim Crouse, Capstone's Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. "For the CHP system, they'll likely experience energy efficiencies that exceed 80 percent, which means significantly reduced energy costs. The highly reliable C1000 they'll use for demand response and peak shaving will provide even lower energy costs while ensuring round-the-clock power availability onsite."

"The Authority was looking for a partner in this process, a partner whose products and reputation would stand alongside the Authority in bringing this state-of-the-art project on line," said JT Hand, Chief Operating Officer, York City Sewer Authority. "I believe we've found that partner in Capstone and I'm confident that this unique configuration of the C600 and C1000 microturbines will set the production standard for wastewater treatment plant co-generation."

Capstone's C600 and C1000 Power Packages are robust 600 kilowatt and one megawatt power systems configured in compact ISO size containers that provide the same low emissions, low noise, high efficiency and extended maintenance benefits of Capstone's C30, C65 and C200 offerings. They feature Capstone's patented air bearing, remote monitoring and diagnostic capabilities, and integrated utility synchronization and protection. The small, modular C600 and C1000 systems allow for easy and low-cost installation. Five- and nine-year Factory Protection Plans ("FPP") also are available, providing customers with fixed maintenance costs over the term of the FPP.

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Names Capstone Turbine Corporation's...
by GlobeNewswire  Dec 9 2010 8:30AM

CHATSWORTH, Calif., Dec 9, 2010 (GlobeNewswire via COMTEX) -- Capstone Turbine Corporation ( www.capstoneturbine.com ) (CPST, Trade ), the world's leading clean technology manufacturer of microturbine energy systems, announced that U.S. Secretary of Commerce Gary Locke recently named Capstone Executive Vice President Jim Crouse to a national advisory committee that will promote U.S. exports of renewable energy and energy efficient technologies.

The 29-member Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Advisory Committee will advise Locke on the development and implementation of programs and policies to help expand the competitiveness of the U.S. renewable energy and energy efficiency industries. Crouse and other committee members also will develop strategies to identify and expand export markets for the industries, both in the short- and long-term.

"We will work closely with the committee to help achieve President Obama's goal of making the United States a leader in the global green economy," Locke said in a press release. "U.S. companies in these critical sectors need to take full advantage of increased exporting opportunities and thus will create green jobs for Americans that are needed to sustain our economic growth."

Secretary Locke has recognized Capstone Turbine in the past. In June, Capstone representatives joined Secretary Locke at a signing ceremony that was part of the first U.S. International Trade Mission to China under the Obama Administration. The event in Beijing recognized the distribution agreement between Capstone and Sino Clean Energy and acknowledged the companies' efforts to broaden China's use of clean-and-green microturbine technology developed in the United States.

In addition, Capstone's innovative U.S.-based technology and successful exporting record led Secretary Locke to award the company the Presidential E Award for Exporting in 2009.

"Jim's years of experience in the worldwide energy marketplace, and deep knowledge about decentralized energy systems will play a crucial role in advising Secretary Locke on these critical programs," said Darren Jamison, Capstone's President and Chief Executive Officer.

Jamison noted last June during the announcement of the Beijing signing ceremony that, "Sales of our low emission microturbines overseas rose significantly the last three years. The Commerce Department opens doors for us, provides advice and exceptional service, and assists with market assessments domestically and in Asia and Europe. With their help, we've been able to broaden our network of Capstone distributors worldwide, which has led to increased sales."

Capstone products offer a clean-and-green energy solution that ensures a reliable and uninterrupted power supply, low maintenance and controlled energy costs. Energy efficiencies can approach 90 percent, especially in combined heat and power (CHP) or combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) applications. In CCHP applications, for example, the Capstone microturbines produce reliable electricity. At the same time, waste heat energy is captured and recycled to heat and air condition a facility via absorption cooling, thus greatly increasing system efficiencies.

Trend and timing look right...
Orders are picking up nicely too.
Also the Golden Cross has taken place!

Investors have appreciated Capstone Turbine's improving operations, particularly after the 22% increase in revenues it reported last quarter that hinted at growing future business prospects with a 41% jump in backlog. The maker of on-site microturbines that run off various fuel sources might even be able to see the results of that effort when it reports third quarter earnings on Monday.

While there will be a growing market for such mini-turbines, Capstone is looking to create a holistic business model and a recent agreement with a luxury hotel in the Dominican Republic builds on what it started last summer. Back then it entered into a partnership with CalMotors to redesign Parker Hannifin's industrial motor drive products for cars and trucks. Its newest agreement provides total plant operations over a nine-year period, valued at $1 million. It's a new opportunity to have a recurring stream of revenue.

So here is the real growth story behind this company in my opinion; Capstone has been receiving orders from large oil and gas companies in the shale plays (which is going to be HUGE in the coming years). If they can keep this going, I see a bright future for this company.

This Underdog is No Dog....... ;) :D ;D
