Volume speaks... ;)
CPST Overall Average: 100% - Buy

Price Support PivotPoint Resistance
1.31 -- 1.25 --- 1.31 ---- 1.37

High Growth Stock Approaching an Inflection Point...
high growth stocks, as defined by projected EPS growth.
This stock, approaching an inflection point, based on moving average trends.
Define this inflection point as the convergence between the 50-day and 200-day moving averages.
When these two moving averages cross, it often represents a shift in investor sentiment. If the 50-day MA moves above the 200-day MA (bullish), it's called a "Golden Cross" signal. If, on the other hand, the 50-day MA crosses below the 200-day MA (bearish), it's called the "Death Cross."
The goal here is to give technical momentum traders a starting point for their own analysis.

Capstone Turbine Corp. (CPST): Industrial Electrical Equipment Industry. Market cap of $305.87M. EPS growth projected over the next five years at 32.50%. SMA50 at $1.00 vs. SMA200 at $0.93 (price at $1.27). Short float at 10.66%, which implies a short ratio of 10.52 days.

Small-Cap Stock on Fire...
it had risen 55% over the past three months. Capstone makes microturbines that run off various fuel sources and allow customers to produce power and heat on-site, as opposed to relying solely on the electrical grid. Last quarter, its revenue rose 22% year over year, while its backlog increased 41%. Those gains and subsequent orders have led to the stock taking off these past three months. Capstone reports third-quarter earnings on Monday, and hopefully the company will continue its trend of posting improved results.

Nice trend...
This is a big bagger waiting to happen.
Capstone is a sure 'Buy the dips' kind of play.

The company announced record revenue for the most recently completed quarter, and indicated that the backlog of orders was growing as well, boding well for continued sales increases and guarantees for future revenue streams.

According to Capstone's earnings released, "Revenue for the third quarter of Fiscal 2011 was $24.2 million, an increase of 51% from the third quarter of Fiscal 2010. Capstone shipped 171 units in the third quarter of Fiscal 2011, compared to 122 units in the same period last year."

Both are significant numbers for a company looking forward towards growth and profitability. The release then goes on to add that, "Capstone's backlog at the end of the third quarter was $84.7 million, up 8% from the same period last year."

That's an indication that Capstone's products are also growing in demand.

Capstone's Big Order Underlies Potential...

February was a pretty good month for Capstone Turbine (CPST).

The company announced record revenue for the most recently completed quarter, and indicated that the backlog of orders was growing as well, boding well for continued sales increases and guarantees for future revenue streams.

Then, just when it looked like Capstone would be heading right back down into the solid buy territory, a significant order for the company's C65 microturbine units came rolling in to thwart the price decline and return the CPST stock to the $1.50 mark.

What makes the 24-unit purchase even more significant is that this purchase was made in addition to an 18-unit order that took place last August by "one of the world's largest independent oil and natural gas companies," according to a Capstone release issued last week.

Re-orders as significant as this one provide confirmation and assurance that Capstone's products are embedding themselves into the market, an essential element for investors when judging the long term potential of the company.

The 24 microturbines are slated for the Eagle Ford shale play in South Texas, again according to the company press release.

This order also shows that Capstone's low-emission microturbine units are also appreciated by the oil and gas industry, even while green energy companies such as Capstone could be considered as in competition to big oil, as they tend to benefit when oil prices are on the rise and sources of alternative energy move more into the spotlight.

There's always the chance that CPST will retrace back into the lower $1 range, as this company will always be considered speculative while its losing money, but orders such as this one underlie Capstone's potential as a big player in the green energy sector for years to come.

Disclosure: I am long CPST.

Keep an Eye on Capstone Turbine Following Friday's Surge 03/04/11

The price and volume action of Capstone Turbine (CPST) shares on Friday make CPST a stock to watch as we open the new trading week.

A late day surge pushed CPST 10% higher on volume, more than double the normal average, leaving investors wondering what might be in store during the coming days that might justify such a rise.

Was it the political turmoil and instability in the Middle East that sparked the sudden interest in Capstone? Could be, since this 'green' stock and others like it tend to do very well during times of rising oil prices.

It could also be related to the large purchase order that the company announced a couple of weeks ago, just when the stock had started to slip after announcing record quarterly earnings.

It's also possible that some significant news slipped behind the scenes on Friday afternoon, because the late day action sure looks like somebody knew something that we didn't.

Perhaps it was just a case of a big player becoming interested in the long term potential and viability of the company, certainly a possibility given the growing popularity of Capstone's low-emission microturbine units.

The true cause of the spike may never reveal itself, but it makes the short term Capstone story that much more interesting to watch.

That said, with all the good news and even better price action of this stock (CPST traded for three quarters of a dollar just three months ago), it might also be worth keeping an eye on the increasing short interest.

Month-over-month, short interest in CPST grew by roughly six million shares from January to February. This could be an indication that the short sellers may be looking to take advantage of a pullback after Capstone's impressive three month run, although in a similar situation with SIRI shares late last year, short interest was also increasing when that stock hit the $1 mark, and that stock hasn't looked back since while approaching two dollars.

So the short interest could end up becoming a non-factor, as even the shorts can get it wrong sometimes.

Regardless, I wouldn't rule out another dip in the CPST share price back down towards a buck at some point in time, but the news has been encouraging for this company of late, and Friday's price action reminds us that there's always the potential for Capstone to release big news at any given time to propel the share price higher.

I'm always a fan of taking some money off the table during significant runups, and I'd say that the runup from sub-eighty cents in short time is pretty significant, but it's also worth recognizing the long term potential that Capstone holds - especially when oil prices could be on the brink of setting new records, and the world's attention will flock to the 'green' companies, such as Capstone.

Additionally, with the uncertainty and unpredictability surrounding the oil market right now, I wouldn't be surprised to see an Exxon (XOM) or a Chevron (CVX) come out of the woodwork and snatch up as many of the emerging 'green' companies that they can in order to stay ahead of the game.

After all, oil can only get so expensive before the average consumer simply cannot afford to buy in large quantities, and going green can keep 'big oil' ahead of the game - even without relying solely on the oil.

Capstone Turbine's Management Is Creating Value...

Warren Buffett's partner, Charlie Munger, once said, "I think I've been in the top 5% of my age cohort all my life in understanding the power of incentives, and all my life I've underestimated it. And never a year passes but I get some surprise that pushes my limit a little farther."

When corporate boards use bad incentives for management's pay, disaster often ensues. (Think Lehman Brothers.) Incentives based on singular metrics such as revenue growth, EBITDA, ROE, or earning per share are easily manipulated and gamed. Fortunately, there is a better way: EVA momentum.

Creator Bennett Stewart of EVA Dimensions, who also co-created EVA (economic value added), calls EVA momentum "the only percent metric where more is always better than less. It always increases when managers do things that make economic sense."

So what does this mean for investors? A positive EVA momentum reading means a company has created more value by increasing its EVA while a negative EVA momentum reading means EVA has decreased, signaling less value creation. EVA momentum is one of the few, if not the only, performance measures with such a clear dividing line between good and bad performance.

The best companies, then, create value in excess of their cost of capital, as reflected by positive EVA momentum. The higher the EVA momentum, the faster management is creating value.

Let's look at Capstone Turbine (Nasdaq: CPST) and two of its peers to see how effectively they create value. Here are the trailing four quarters' worth of EVA momentum figures for each company over the past three years, and rankings by percentile versus the Russell 3000 for the past 12 months' EVA momentum.

Related Companies      2008     2009      2010     Russell 3000 Percentile

CPST                            10.2%    39.5%   45.5%               95

CMI                               0.3%     2.4%      4.8%                76

BGG                                0%       0.1%      1.7%                54

Source: EVA Dimensions LLC.

With an EVA momentum of 45.5%, Capstone Turbine's economic value added increased year over year, placing it in the 95th percentile of all companies in the Russell 3000. Both of the remaining companies had positive EVA momentum over the past 12 months.

Businesses with high EVA momentum are effectively creating value. It will be interesting to see how useful this extremely new metric proves for companies and investors. If it lives up to its promise, EVA momentum will be an essential tool in investors' arsenals.

Another tool for better investing
Most investors don't keep tabs on their companies' fundamental value. That's a mistake. If you take the time to read past the headlines and crack a filing now and then, you're in a much better position to spot potential trouble early. Better yet, you'll improve your odds of finding the underappreciated home run stocks that provide the market's best returns.

Capstone's Presidential Mention Puts It in the Big Leagues...
March 23, 2011

Capstone Turbine has received increased investors' attention of late. After a mention by the President of the United States during a recent speech in Brazil, it looks like the company may finally be ready to sit with the big players in the 'green energy' sector.

President Obama's mention of Capstone was brief, but he emphasized the strategy of his administration to shift to green energy while employing U.S. manpower to do so.

With Capstone's growing green brand and growing tally of orders and re-orders, it's no wonder that its being recognized by Washington as a potential mascot for America's business strategies of the future.

Aside from the mention by the President in Brazil, Capstone is going to continue to benefit from the shifting global economic and political climate. With bombs raining down on pro-Gadaffi forces in Libya and with unrest the word of the day throughout the Middle East, oil prices are going to be anything but stable for the foreseeable future.

Even while the general public views high oil prices solely as a nuisance, the high price of oil, combined with the growing trend against nuclear energy, only stands to boost Capstone's potential even more.

In the midst of the newfound political support, another multiple-turbine order was announced last week. Six C65s were sold to a "prominent natural gas producer" whose fleet of Capstone microturbines already numbers 49, with a combined one million hours of operation. These six are destined for Mexico's San Juan Basin.

It's always a good sign when the customers place re-orders.

The march to two dollars is in effect, and the perfect storm could be developing to take this company to the next level, and support from the President can only help.

There may be a lot more eyes on CPST now after the Presidential mention.

FuelCell Energy and Capstone Turbine Poised to Benefit From Surging Oil Prices
The Bedford Report Provides Analyst Research on FuelCell Energy & Capstone Turbine

Press Release Source: The Bedford Report On Monday March 21, 2011, 7:35 am EDT
NEW YORK, NY--(Marketwire - 03/21/11) - With sky-high oil prices beginning to slow down the economic recovery, investors are hopeful that the fuel cell sector will get a boost from a stronger push for alternative sources of energy. Fuel cells can be used for buses and recreational vehicles, heating and cooling systems and backup power for cell phone towers. On the downside, fuel cells have a reputation of being expensive, leading some competitors to argue that microturbines hold a brighter future. The Bedford Report examines the outlook for companies in the Industrial Electrical Equipment Industry and provides research reports on FuelCell Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:FCEL - News) and Capstone Turbine, Inc. (NASDAQ:CPST - News). Access to the full company reports can be found at:

Ford and Toyota have both stressed the importance of breaking the dependence on foreign oil and project that they could be mass producing the fuel cell cars by 2015. Executives at Toyota say the company aims to slash the cost of hydrogen fuel cell technology before it starts selling its fuel cell sedan. Shinzo Kobuki, senior managing director in charge of Toyota's battery technology says the goal is to bring the cost of the fuel stack and high-pressure hydrogen tank to one-twentieth of 2008 levels.

Earlier this month shares of FuelCell Energy surged after the company said its fiscal first-quarter loss narrowed on strong product sales, resulting in better-than-expected revenue growth. The company makes fuel cells for electric power generation for commercial, industrial, municipal and utility customers and reported a loss of $11.7 million, or 10 cents a share, compared with a year-earlier loss of $15.4 million, or 18 cents a share.

Capstone Turbine Corporation makes and sells turbine generator sets and related parts for use in stationary distributed power generation applications. The company argues that fuel cells are expensive, and require significantly higher government incentive levels to stimulate customer investment than Capstone's so called "microturbines."

Nuclear Vulnerability Could Benefit Capstone Turbine...

Capstone Turbine's (CPST) increasing share price has held its own of late, even in light of global political instability, a natural disaster in the Far East and a downturn in the markets.

Although the short interest continues to increase in CPST, this 'green energy' company has always done well during times of rising or uncertain oil prices - we're there now - and it looks now Capstone is also on the map in Washington.

A press release issued on Wednesday announced that Capstone's Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing would appear to testify before the Subcommittee on Commerce, Manufacturing and Trade in Washington, D.C. that day.

The event underlines the efforts of the Obama Administration to increase both American exports and green technology while decreasing the United States' demand on oil.

Capstone fits very nicely right into that picture, on all fronts, and as an exporter of a 'green' American product, even Washington may be taking notice.

Additionally, the catastrophic event in Japan has resulted in a global second-guessing of the benefits provided by nuclear energy when compared to the risks - and in turn, some nations have put on hold their plans to construct new nuclear facilities.

Often considered the preferable choice of clean energy, nuclear power could be on the way out after the earthquake in Japan has demonstrated just how vulnerable a reliance on that power can be.

That means, again, that attention is going to be drawn to other clean energy platforms, and that always benefits Capstone Turbine.

With the short interest where it is, and with market volatility sure to rule the day in this global climate of political unrest and natural disasters, there's a distinct possibility that we may see CPST reach 'buy the dips' territory at some point in the near future.

That being said, there's no doubt that CPST is still an appetizing mid to long term green play.

The orders are rolling in and the geopolitical trends in the United States are right, so it can only be a good thing when Capstone goes to Washington.

The hearing is entitled "Made in America: Increasing Jobs through Exports and Trade." Capstone will be represented by Jim Crouse, Capstone's Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing.

The purpose of the hearing is to examine the Obama Administration's efforts to promote trade and increase export opportunities and to get input from private enterprise about technical and other non-tariff trade barriers, according to a committee memo.

President Obama said in his state-of-the union address last year that his goal is to double exports over the next five years.

Crouse joins Robert Holleyman II, Business Software Alliance President and CEO; Daniel Ikenson, CATO Institute Associate Director for Trade Policy Studies; John Murphy, U.S. Chamber of Commerce Vice President of International Affairs; and Jack Pelton, Chief Executive Officer of Cessna Aircraft.

The Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade Francisco Sanchez is also scheduled to testify.

"We believe that the key to increasing exports is by strengthening the domestic market for clean and efficient energy technologies. A strong domestic market would enable newer companies like Capstone to increase production capacity that would make us more competitive overseas," said Jim Crouse, Capstone's Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing."

"Capstone Turbine sees value in adopting long-term energy policy in the United States as a means of not only protecting our environment, but also as a way to decrease reliance on foreign oil while creating American jobs. Why Capstone Turbine Corporation (CPST) Hit a Five-Year High Today (Update)

Update (4:15 p.m.): Updated with five-year high price and Wednesday market close information.

NEW YORK (TheStreet) -- Capstone Turbine Corporation  (CPST_) hit a five-year high of $2.60 on Wednesday as the microturbine manufacturer continued to climb after its announcement earlier in the week that it had received several orders from oil and gas companies.

Capstone said it received orders from E-Finity Distributed Generation for turbines that the latter plans to use in oil and gas operations in the Marcellus and Utica Shale regions. Marcellus is the biggest source of natural gas in the U.S. at 104,000 square miles in Pennsylvania and West Virginia.

Capstone received the orders from E-Finity, a distributor of Capstone turbines, but the companies that actually placed the orders were not identified.

"The Capstone microturbine product has been the first choice for recent new and existing customers and is being selected due to its proven ability to provide reliable power for the natural gas and oil industry," said Jeff Beiter, an E-Finity managing partner, in a statement.

The stock closed at $2.45, up 3.81% or 9 cents from its previous close of $2.36. It amassed a volume of 24,083,822, more than triple its average of 7,010,580.

STOCKS TO BUY: TheStreet Quant Ratings has identified a handful of stocks that can potentially TRIPLE in the next 12 months. Learn more.

TheStreet Ratings team rates CAPSTONE TURBINE CORP as a "sell" with a ratings score of D. TheStreet Ratings Team has this to say about their recommendation:

"We rate CAPSTONE TURBINE CORP (CPST) a SELL. This is driven by a number of negative factors, which we believe should have a greater impact than any strengths, and could make it more difficult for investors to achieve positive results compared to most of the stocks we cover. Among the areas we feel are negative, one of the most important has been poor profit margins."

Highlights from the analysis by TheStreet Ratings Team goes as follows:
◾The gross profit margin for CAPSTONE TURBINE CORP is rather low; currently it is at 21.30%. Regardless of CPST's low profit margin, it has managed to increase from the same period last year. Despite the mixed results of the gross profit margin, CPST's net profit margin of -5.91% significantly underperformed when compared to the industry average.
◾The company's current return on equity greatly increased when compared to its ROE from the same quarter one year prior. This is a signal of significant strength within the corporation. Compared to other companies in the Electrical Equipment industry and the overall market, CAPSTONE TURBINE CORP's return on equity significantly trails that of both the industry average and the S&P 500.
◾CAPSTONE TURBINE CORP reported flat earnings per share in the most recent quarter. Stable earnings per share over the past year indicate the company has sound management over its earnings and share float. However, the consensus estimates suggest that there will be an upward trend in the coming year. During the past fiscal year, CAPSTONE TURBINE CORP's EPS of -$0.07 remained unchanged from the prior years' EPS of -$0.07. This year, the market expects an improvement in earnings (-$0.05 versus -$0.07).
◾The net income growth from the same quarter one year ago has significantly exceeded that of the S&P 500 and the Electrical Equipment industry. The net income increased by 51.1% when compared to the same quarter one year prior, rising from -$4.48 million to -$2.19 million.
◾Compared to its closing price of one year ago, CPST's share price has jumped by 131.94%, exceeding the performance of the broader market during that same time frame. Regarding the future course of this stock, we feel that the risks involved in investing in CPST do not compensate for any future upside potential, despite the fact that it has seen nice gains over the past 12 months.
