FuelCell Energy gets order for unspecified number of power plants from S. Korea's Posco Power

DANBURY, Conn. (AP) -- FuelCell Energy Inc., which makes fuel cells for electric power generation, said Wednesday South Korea's Posco Power ordered an unspecified number of power plants and fuel-cell modules for $70 million.

FuelCell said the order for the facilities, whose combined capacity will be 25.6 megawatts, more than doubles its product backlog. Delivery is set for 2009.

FuelCell shares rose $1, or 12.6 percent, to $8.96 in afternoon trading.

A one-megawatt plant running continuously at full capacity can power 778 households each year, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Solar technology has lower capacity because its power generation is constrained by availability of the sun.

FuelCell and Posco Power also signed a service agreement covering all Posco Power installations.
