Iran prepares public for possible clash By ALI AKBAR DAREINI, Associated Press Writer
52 minutes ago

TEHRAN, Iran - Iran conducted missile tests Monday as its leadership stepped up warnings of a possible military confrontation with the United States.

n another show of defiance, Tehran said Monday it had barred 38 United Nations nuclear inspectors from entering the country, apparently in retaliation for a U.N. Security Council resolution last month imposing limited sanctions on Iran.

The drum-beating suggested Iran does not intend to back down in its standoff with the West. It could also aim to rally the public behind the government and silence increasingly bold criticism at home of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's antagonism toward the United States.

Iran's leaders have touted the possibility of a U.S. attack since President Bush announced on Jan. 9 the deployment of a second aircraft carrier to the Gulf region, a move U.S. officials have said is a show of strength directed at Iran.

Last month, the Security Council imposed limited trade sanctions on Iran over its refusal to cease uranium enrichment, a process that can produce fuel for nuclear energy or bombs.

The Iranian military on Monday began five days of maneuvers near the northern city of Garmsar, about 60 miles southeast of Tehran, state television reported. The military tested its Zalzal-1 and Fajr-5 missiles, the report said.

The Zalzal-1, able to carry a 1,200-pound payload, has a range of 200 miles. That would put Iraq, U.S. bases in the Gulf, and eastern Saudi Arabia in its range. The Fajr-5, with a 1,800-pound payload, has a range of 35 miles.

Neither could reach Israel, but Iran has other missiles that can. It was not known whether the missiles tested are capable of carrying nuclear warheads.

The Iranian show of strength came as the American aircraft carrier USS Stennis was heading toward the Gulf, joining the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower in a beefed-up American military presence. The Stennis is expected to arrive in late February.

The U.S. is also deploying Patriot missiles and nuclear submarines to the Persian Gulf and F-16 fighter planes to the Incirlik base in neighboring Turkey.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the buildup aimed to impress on Iran that the four-year war in Iraq has not made America vulnerable.

Washington and its allies accuse Iran of secretly trying to develop atomic weapons. Tehran denies the allegation, insisting its nuclear activities are aimed only at producing energy. The U.S. also accuses Iran of backing militants fueling Iraq's violence.

Bush OKs countering Iranians in Iraq By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent
1 hour, 4 minutes ago

WASHINGTON -        President Bush has authorized U.S. forces in        Iraq to take whatever actions are necessary to counter Iranian agents deemed a threat to American troops or the public at large, the White House said Friday.

"It makes sense that if somebody's trying to harm our troops, or stop us from achieving our goal, or killing innocent citizens in Iraq, that we will stop them," Bush said. "It's an obligation we all have ... to protect our folks and achieve our goal."

The aggressive new policy came in response to intelligence that        Iran is supporting terrorists inside Iraq and is providing bombs _ known as improvised explosive devices _ and other equipment to anti-U.S. insurgents.

"The president and his national security team over the last several months have continued to receive information that Iranians were supplying IED equipment and or training that was being used to harm American soldiers," National Security Council spokesman Gordon Johndroe said.

"As a result American forces, when they receive actionable information, may take the steps necessary to protect themselves as well as the population," Johndroe said.

Bush referred to the new policy in his Jan. 10 address to the nation in which he announced a buildup of 21,500 troops in Iraq. He said the United States would confront Iran and        Syria more vigorously.

While promising tougher action, the White House said the United States does not intend to cross the Iraq-Iran border to attack Iranians.

During a picture-taking session Friday with Army Lt. Gen. David Petraeus, newly confirmed by the Senate to command U.S. troops in Iraq, Bush was asked about stepped-up activities in Iraq against Iranian activities thought to be fueling the violence.

NEW YORK - The risk of terror attacks in Europe is high and is increasing, France's leading anti-terrorism judge said, warning that a recent alliance between al-Qaida and a North African terrorist group poses a grave threat.

The Salafist Group for Call and Combat, known by its French initials GSPC, staged seven nearly simultaneous attacks in Algeria on Tuesday, targeting police in several towns east of Algiers, killing six and injuring around 30, according to officials, police and hospital staff.

Al-Qaida in Islamic North Africa, the new name for the GSPC, claimed responsibility for the strikes.

"The GSPC wants to carry out attacks in Europe, especially in France, Italy and Spain, and destabilize North Africa," Jean-Louis Bruguiere told The Associated Press on Tuesday night in New York.

French counterterrorism police arrested 11 suspects as part of efforts aimed at dismantling an alleged al-Qaida-linked recruiting network to send radical Islamic fighters to        Iraq, police officials said Wednesday.

Nine suspects were detained in and near the southern city of Toulouse before dawn Wednesday, following the arrest of two others late Tuesday at Paris' Orly airport, police said. The two had been sent home by Syrian authorities, investigators said.

Bruguiere said the threat to Europe is "pretty high." France rates four on a scale of one to five, he said

He linked the increased threat level to the U.S.-led war on Iraq.

"Actors of jihad have become radicalized and have tried to demonstrate that their means have not been diminished since September 11," he said.

As Western countries have developed new measures to fight attacks by Islamic radicals, the terrorists have also come up with a strategy to fight globally, he said.

RIDGEFIELD, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 14, 2005--Markland Technologies, Inc. (OTCBB: MRKL), a defense and homeland security company transforming advanced laboratory technology into real-world products, announced today that the Contracting Officer for its U.S. Army Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (NVESD) Omnibus contract has stated that EOIR Technologies Inc will be awarded an additional performance year on this contract thus extending the period for contract awards out to July 2007.

Normal practice would allow for tasks awarded by that date to be executed over the following year, allowing backlog to be accumulated on this contract until midyear 2008. EOIR Technologies Inc has won this contract on three consecutive solicitations over the last twelve years and expects that it will compete for, and as a result of continued excellent performance, believes it will have a very good opportunity to win the 5-year follow-on contract to be awarded sometime in 2008.
The contract has a potential value of approximately $406 million over the life of the contract. With approximately $150M funded to date there is a total remaining potential contract value which exceeds $250M over the three year period extending to mid year 2008.
Although there is no guarantee of capturing that complete level of funding the company has traditionally captured a very high percentage of available contract funding over the previous twelve year history of th"

Technest Holdings Awarded $4.4 Million in New Funding to Develop Novel Demining Technology for the U.S. Army's Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate

EOIR Technologies Receives $2.4 Million in Incremental Funding Under NVESD Omnibus Contract

BOSTON, Feb. 26, 2007 (PRIME NEWSWIRE) -- Technest Holdings, Inc. (OTC BB:TCNH.OB - News), a defense and homeland security company, announced today that its wholly owned subsidiary, EOIR Technologies, received two new funding awards totaling approximately $4.4 million from the U.S. Army's Night Vision and Electronic Sensors Directorate (``NVESD'') related to developing sensors used in global demining efforts.

EOIR received a funding award totaling approximately $1.45 million, of which $1.0 million was funded at the time of award, to provide operational support to the U.S. Department of Defense's Humanitarian Demining Research and Development Program (``HD R&D'') for in-house prototype development. The contract has a 12-month performance review.

The HD R&D began in 1994 and focuses on the research and development of workable prototypes that reduce the time and cost associated for mine and minefield detection and neutralization while enhancing operator safety. The primary goal of the program is to enhance existing sensor technology to be more adaptive to varying terrains and random environmental conditions. The HD R&D deploys equipment to more than 25 countries worldwide, including Afghanistan, Angola, Mozambique, Rwanda, Thailand, Cambodia and Honduras, which are heavily affected by this humanitarian problem.

Concurrently, EOIR also received $2.9 million in new funds, of which $500,000 was funded initially, to assist in the development of Ground Penetrating Radar (``GPR'') Countermine On The Move and has a performance period of 18 months. The GPR Countermine On The Move is a faster, wideband multi-sensor system used to detect anti-tank mines with a high probability of mine detection and low false alarm rates. EOIR will assist the U.S. Army in conducting modeling and simulation activities that will assess the effectiveness based on the performance of the improved system on rough terrain.

``We are extremely excited to team with the U.S. Army in order to further the development of remote sensors that significantly enhance the overall safety and efficiency of existing mine detection and mine clearing technology,'' stated Larry Bramlette, Division Director for EOIR Technologies. ``We believe that our ability to continually secure new awards through the Night Vision Directorate is indicative of our ability to successfully develop advanced remote sensor technologies.''

Additionally, EOIR Technologies received $2.4 million in incremental funding on five existing delivery orders for remote sensor technology products and engineering services under the U.S. Army's NVESD omnibus contract. This increase in funds brings the total funding for the current performance award year, which was awarded on July 19, 2006, to $31.4 million and the total funds for this contract to $281 million.
