OccuLogix Gets FDA Green Light to Begin Study of Rheo System for Age-Related Blindness

NEW YORK (AP) -- Canadian medical device maker OccuLogix Inc. said Monday that the Food and Drug Administration allowed the company to begin late stage testing of its Rheo procedure to treat a form of age-related blindness.
OccuLogix shares surged 15 cents, or 10 percent, to $1.65 in electronic premarket activity, after closing Friday at $1.50 Friday on the Nasdaq.

The company hopes to treat the dry form of age-related macular degeneration, when protein and lipid deposits build up in capillaries in front of the retina and block vision, a condition that affects up to 13.5 million people in the United States. The Rheo system filters blood and recirculates it to help clear the deposits.

Under the clinical trial, patients will receive either eight Rheo treatments or eight fake treatments over 10 weeks. Researchers will follow patients out to 12 months and rate patients' vision on an acuity scale.
