FORD announced blowout earnings of .33/share, over 7 times a year ago.  On this news, I bought a chunk at 22 and it's proceeded to break the all-time high of 23.38.  Now, the fundamentals look awesome and the chart is beautiful.  I'm holding FORD as a swing trade with appropriate stops.

Forward Industries Reports Record Third Quarter Results:;...

POMPANO BEACH, Fla., Jul 25, 2005 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Forward Industries, Inc. (FORD, Trade), a designer and distributor of custom carrying case solutions, today announced record results for its fiscal third quarter and nine months ended June 30, 2005.

Fiscal Third Quarter 2005 Financial Highlights - Compared to fiscal third quarter 2004:

-- Net sales increased $7.86 million or 150% to a record $13.11 million.

-- Cell phone product sales increased $7.23 million or 324% to $9.46 million, driven by three major "in-box" programs with Nokia and Motorola.

-- Overall demand for diabetic cases remained strong as sales rose $480,000 or 20% to $2.84 million.

-- Sales of other carrying solutions rose $140,000 or 21% to $810,000.

-- Net income increased more than seven times to a record $2.57 million or $.33 per diluted share, from $346,000 or $.05 per diluted share.

Fiscal Nine Month 2005 Financial Highlights - Compared to the nine months ended June 30, 2004:

-- Net sales increased $18.52 million or 126% to a record $33.26 million.

-- Cell phone product sales increased $16.11 million or 256% to $22.41 million.

-- Revenues from diabetic cases rose $1.50 million or 22% to $8.31 million.

-- Sales of other carrying solutions increased $910,000 or 56% to $2.54 million.

-- Net income increased more than fivefold to a record $5.95 million or $.82 per diluted share, from $1.03 million or $.16 per diluted share.

The tables below set forth the Company's unaudited, condensed consolidated statements of income for the three- and nine-month periods ended June 30, 2005 and 2004, the unaudited, condensed consolidated balance sheet as of June 30, 2005, and the audited, consolidated balance sheet as of September 30, 2004 and are derived from the Company's unaudited, condensed consolidated financial statements included in its Form 10-QSB filed today with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Please refer to the Form 10-QSB for complete financial statements and further information regarding the Company's results of operations and financial condition relating to the three- and nine-month periods ended June 30, 2005, as well as the Company's Form 10-KSB for the fiscal year ended September 30, 2004 for additional information.

Jerome E. Ball, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Forward, commented: "In the third quarter we achieved substantial revenue increases across all of our product lines. We are especially pleased with the strength of our OEM cell phone product sales, which continue a trend of sharp, sequential revenue increases established in the first quarter of our 2005 fiscal year to levels that are well above historical norms. This revenue trend was largely driven by three major "in-box" programs (two with Motorola and one with Nokia), which comprised 61% and 56% of our net sales for the three-and nine-month periods ended June 30, 2005, respectively; one of these programs alone accounted for 47% and 39% of revenues in such respective periods. Based on current confirmed and anticipated orders for existing "in-box" programs, we expect this trend of increasing revenues to continue into our fourth fiscal quarter. Whether this trend continues beyond that period depends on the timing of the decline of the product cycle for these three programs as well as on the strength of new in-box business that replaces them, which is difficult to assess at this time."

Mr. Ball continued, "Our robust sales growth and relatively fixed cost structure enabled us once again to decrease operating expenses as a percentage of sales to 11% in the third quarter from 27% in the prior year's quarter. The growth in our top line, coupled with a relatively modest increase in operating expenses, produced the highest quarterly diluted earnings per share in the Company's history of $.33. Our earnings per share increase from the 2004 quarter is even more remarkable when you consider that our weighted average shares increased 19% and our tax provision increased $661,000."

Mr. Ball further stated, "With regard to the Company's financial position, we closed the third quarter with $10.3 million in cash, no long-term debt, and working capital of $17.2 million. During the quarter, Forward received nearly $1.4 million from the exercise of stock options granted under our 1996 Stock Incentive Plan, thus further strengthening our cash position. Approximately 660,000 stock options held by executives and other employees are presently in the money and are expected to be exercised, including 370,000 options that expire on or before December 31, 2005. The exercise of these options would have a further dilutive effect on earnings per share in future quarters."

Mr. Ball concluded, "We look forward to reporting our results for our fiscal 2005 fourth quarter, which will complete a record-breaking year."

Forward Earnings Surge

By TSC Staff
7/25/2005 12:53 PM EDT

Forward Industries (FORD:Nasdaq - commentary - research) surged Monday after the maker of cell-phone carrying cases posted strong third-quarter numbers.

For the quarter ended June 30, the Pompano Beach, Fla., company earned $2.6 million, or 33 cents a share, up from the year-ago $346,199, or a nickel a share. Sales surged 150% from a year earlier to $13.1 million.

Forward shares continued their strong recent run. The stock, which traded for as little as $1.90 a year ago, jumped $4.35 in hefty volume to $24.34.

"We are especially pleased with the strength of our OEM cell-phone product sales, which continue a trend of sharp, sequential revenue increases established in the first quarter of our 2005 fiscal year to levels that are well above historical norms," said CEO Jerome Ball. "Based on current confirmed and anticipated orders for existing 'in-box' programs, we expect this trend of increasing revenue to continue into our fourth fiscal quarter. Whether this trend continues beyond that period depends on the timing of the decline of the product cycle for these three programs as well as on the strength of new in-box business that replaces them, which is difficult to assess at this time."

The company said the revenue gains are being driven by two deals with Motorola (MOT:NYSE - commentary - research) and one with Nokia (NOK:NYSE - commentary - research). The company said those programs accounted for 61% of sales for the latest quarter, with one program alone accounting for 47% of revenue.

Forward Industries (FORD) reported incredible quarterly results today. Their sales more than doubled and earnings more than tripled! FORD makes cases for cell phones, medical devices and portable electronic products. Thank god we are not talking about the car maker here!

Guess what Nokia and Motorola has said about their cell phone business. That their handset business is strong as ever (even though Nokia reported a terrible quarter its seeing nice growth in number of handsets sold). That is their biggest strength and their biggest weakness; Motorola and Nokia account for 61% of their revenues. Any downturn in cell phone demand would hurt this stock. But for right now, that doesn't seem to be the case. And it is right now in a nice place to buy too!

Inspite of FORD rising like crazy, its RSI is still at 65.8 which means it has quite a ways to go before reaching the so called oversold territory! I expect FORD to go up big in the coming few weeks and any pull back to its previous high 23.38 would mean an instant buy. It should go up in the next couple of days and then we will hopefully see a pull back.

Also, FORD's price just blasted off its 50 DMA which means its definitely not over extended. The last time it did that was on April 21st 2005, and guess what its price rocketed from its 15 level to over 23.

Good luck tomorrow!

Shorts swarm Forward shares after Razr rally
Thu Aug 25, 2005 05:04 PM ET
By Scott Malone
NEW YORK, Aug 25 (Reuters) - Short-sellers are moving in on the soaring shares of Forward Industries Inc. (FORD.O: Quote, Profile, Research) , a maker of mobile-phone cases.

Its stock has surged more than sixfold this year, but shorts argue the company is overly reliant on a case for Motorola Inc.'s (MOT.N: Quote, Profile, Research) trendy Razr phone.

Short interest in the shares rose 23.2 percent in August, according to Nasdaq data released on Thursday. The exchange reported that 2.6 million Forward shares were held short, representing 37 percent of the 7 million shares outstanding.

Short sellers bet on declining share prices. They borrow shares and sell them, hoping to buy them back later at a lower price and pocket the difference.

Forward's shares ended 2004 at $4.18 and rocketed as high as $29 on Aug. 3. On Thursday they closed at $23.22, off 23 cents for the day.

One investor with a short position in the shares said he believes the company is overdependent on its Razr case. That product, which is shipped in the box with Razr phones, accounted for 39 percent of Forward's revenues for the nine months ended June 30, according to a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

"That's a trend," said the trader, who spoke on condition of anonymity. "Those cell phone manufacturers usually have the hottest phone for six to nine months and then somebody else has got the better thing."

Calls to Forward seeking comment were not returned on Thursday.

Forward also produces cases for phones made by Nokia (NOK1V.HE: Quote, Profile, Research) , the world's No. 1 cell phone maker. Motorola is No. 2.

The Motorola business helped the company post nine-months earnings of $6 million, up from $1 million a year earlier. Revenues were $33.3 million, more than double the $14.7 million posted a year earlier. The shares are currently trading at a price-to-earnings ratio of 24.

"You're paying a high multiple for a company with a fickle outlook with very, very short visibility," the investor argued.

Forward exec uses options to generate cash
Thursday September 8, 9:05 am ET

The president and chief operating officer at Forward Industries kicked off this month by adding $442,600 to his bank account.
Michael Schiffman reported using stock options to buy 20,000 shares in the Pompano Beach-based carrying case designer and distributor, Sept. 1. The same day, he said he sold the shares for an average $25.38 a share, or more than seven times the $3.25 a share he paid.

For Sept. 1, the day of the transaction, the money Schiffman received for his shares was within the market range.

The transaction left the officer with the same 302,427 directly held Forward (NASDAQ: FORD - News) shares he'd had before the deals.

Schiffman has been Forward's president and COO since 1998, following his tenure as executive vice president starting in 1992. Before that, he held various jobs with the company, starting as a salesman in 1985.

The executive has also been a Forward director since 1992.

Last year, the company reported paying him a $300,000 salary and $88,800 bonus. The salary was down $10,000 from the year before, while the bonus saw a $26,200 dip.

Shares closed Wednesday at $26.25. The 52-week high was $29 on Aug. 3. The 52-week low was $2.02 on Oct. 28.

Earnings report out tomorrow (April 26th). To hold or not to hold, that is the dilemma. Any opinions would be welcome.

uc,

FORD looks to be forming a 4-month Inverse H&S pattern.  The width of the pattern doesn't look good enough to go up against that big top from late 2005, but if it breaks out to the upside, it would put Target: 15.50 IN PLAY, which is below the low the big top.  So, it's got "room" to make the target.

If I held FORD through earnings, I would sell any indicated opening below 9.30, right or wrong.  That's the low of the Right Shoulder on April 5, and if it gets violated, it would suggest more downside, possibly below the recent lows of 8.05, if it gets ugly on heavy volume.

That doesn't seem likely, since others in this folder feel that it's undervalued, fundamentally, but that's how I'd play it, technically, on a break of 9.30.

If the report is good, and if FORD really is undervalued, it would seem much more likely that it would gap higher in response to earnings, above the neckline of the Inverse H&S bottom, which would be a technical confirmation of the fundamental undervaluation.  Especially a "Gap And Go" on volume.

"Oops! We had this wrong.  FORD is worth a lot more than this!"

Good luck with your decision, uc!

bmarc,

Absent news, I'd say it's pre-earnings jitters.  A lot of players don't like to hold through earnings, and understandably so, given how stocks can get whacked when they disappoint.

Volume on Friday's big white candle was over one million shares; it's only 540,000 going into the close, so technically, this selloff is alright so far.  It isn't any large-scale dumping.

hehe3,

Unless you're going to play it off the intraday chart and have some experience with that, I'd suggest staying out of there in these situations, in general.

The $6.00 in after hours could be an overreaction since it only was on about 137,000, but any open below The Right Shoulder of the Inverse H&S pattern, at 9.30, and particularly any open below the Head of the pattern, at 8.05, could get ugly.

A break below 8.05 indicates that:

1. Fundamentally, the market certainly doesn't think that FORD was undervalued at yesterday's 10.25 close, or the stock wouldn't be taking that kind of hit.

2. Technically, the Inverse H&S will have resolved to the downside, so it isn't bullish, and it would put Target: 4.32 IN PLAY, reinforcing the Target: 3.90 already IN PLAY from the December, 2005 breakdown of the Double H&S Top.

3. Everyone who bought FORD after mid-March and is still long will be holding a loser, and many of them will be panicked to sell today, particularly those still holding from prices above the big H&S Top.  An 8.05 or lower open today will be their second or third crash experience in this stock (depending upon when they bought it).

As most of you know by now, my own response in these situations is to sell at the market, no questions asked.  I definitely won't "double down" on a loser.  I take the hit, and move on to something more productive.  Each of you who is long will have to decide for yourselves how to handle FORD today, and I wish you good luck.  You know that I sympathize with your situation.  I've been there before.  We probably all have been there.

Finally, I want to applaud Leaira for her honesty in sharing her story about taking the 35% hit in FORD in December, and for taking that hit, "right or wrong."  That's never easy for us, but Leaira moved on to more productive plays, and I congratulate her and applaud her for it.

Unfortunately, I'm in this sinking boat with you'all.  Sell at the market when?  First thing at 9:30AM or around 10:00AM when it can be better or worse, depending on your 9:30 AM decision.

wisebuys,

That's a tough, tough, decision, and frankly, I think it's a guess.

If it opens at 7.00 at 9:30 and you sell, then it rallies to 8.00 at 10:00, you feel like kicking yourself for not waiting a little.  If it opens at 7.00, and you sell, and it drops to 6.00 by 10:00AM, you're very happy that you sold at the open.

Coulda...shoulda...woulda...and, it's very frustrating, trying to guess.

I hate even to suggest anything, for fear of making your situation worse, but if you're deciding between the open and 10:00AM, you could "average out" by selling half at the open, then sell the other half at 10:00.

The risk with that strategy, of course, is if FORD opens at/near its high of the day, then tanks into 10:00.  >:(

Whatever you decide, don't be hard on yourself about it.  Try to put it behind you, and move on.   It's plain difficult to come up with a "good" decision in a situation like this.

Alister,

Whew...I'm glad that you were out of there!

Right before earnings came out, I began studying your MACD Histogram Weekly Uptick and Downtick Signal.  Yesterday didn't seem appropriate to present my results to you, but now that things have settled a little, you might find this interesting.

Irononically, I began with the first "buy signal" (an uptick in the MACD Histogram) in 2005, which came on January 21, with the weekly close 6.38.  Ironic because I had finished the study after earnings came out, when FORD was at 10.25; it closed yesterday at 6.26, for just about a "dead even" since January 21, 2005.

As you can see from this MACD chart, there were a lot of upticks and downticks, or "buy and sell/change in trend" signals.  I only used the "buy" signals, and didn't factor for shorting the "sell" signals.

There were 10 "buy/change in trend" signals since January, 2005.  Yesterday's close gave a "sell/change in trend" signal in the weekly histogram, to close out the weekly "buy/change in trend" at 10.38, on January 13, 2006.

Result From The 10 Signals:

FORD is down 1.9% from January 21, 2005.

Taking the 10 MACD Histogram Buy/CIT Signals for the same period results in a loss of 37.4%.

You see why I said that this signal might work well in a particular stock, but advised caution using it.

In the case of FORD, the weekly MACD Histogram gave 20 Upticks and Downticks "change in trend" signals for the period (January, 2005 to present).  That's far too many signals.  In the first half of 2005, FORD was in a strong uptrend.  All of those signals were "whipsaws," having us in and out and in and out, when we just should have been IN.

;D

What you want to do, Alister, is this:

1. Look at the MACD itself.  During the first half of 2005, its above zero, and its above its signal line.  There is no indication whatsoever of any problem.

2. Look at all of the upticks and downticks in the histogram in the first half of 2005.  That's called "technical noise," and it should be ignored.

3. The first sign of possible trouble was in June, 2005, when MACD went below its signal line.  "MACD gave a SELL signal!!!"

No, it didn't.

In a strong uptrend, that first signal "usually" is NOT a sell, and in this case, it wasn't.

That signal signal came when FORD was at 19.47.  FORD already had put in a LOW the week before, at 15.90!

4. Where the MACD  indicates "possible" technical trouble, is at those two negative divergences in August and September, 2005, and that's where your histogram downtick "sell signal/change in trend" can help you.

The MACD itself, on two occasions, had negative divergences, then ticked below its signal line, and on both occasions, the histogram confirmed it, by also ticking down.

The first one was August 19, 2005: SELL at 24.75.

The second one was September 15, 2005: SELL at 25.05.

Either one of those would have been a good place to sell.  What confirms those signals, is when price breaks below the neckline of the first H&S Top, in late September, 2005.

In this case, the Weekly MACD and Histogram was a nice "lead indicator" of trouble ahead.

Good luck with the MACD histogram, Alister.  I appreciate your charts and the hard work that you put into them.  Applause.  We're all still learning, and I very much enjoy sharing our work, and helping each other out.  Thanks for all of your help.

Melf, I don't know if the P/E ratio is accurate.

setravis,

Okay, thanks.  I've been wondering how this chart could look so horrible if the P/E is 8 or 9, but I can't find anything on estimates.

For the recent 9 months vs. same 9 months last year, earnings were down dramatically

"For the nine months ended June 30, 2006, net sales were $22.4 million, compared to $33.3 million in the nine-month period ended June 30, 2005. Net income was $1.1 million versus $6.0 million, and earnings per diluted share were $0.14, compared to $0.82. The nine-month results were impacted by the factors stated above.

Mr. Ball concluded, "The Company's financial position remains very solid, with cash of $17.3 million, no long-term debt , and working capital of $24.3 million at June 30, 2006."

At least the "no long-term debt" part sounds good.

Chart-wise, the 4.32 target MADE, and although the 3.90 target from the big H&S Top didn't quite make, we got 4.03 and 4.05 for a possible double bottom, which is 99% of the target from the breakdown above $17.

When two targets get MADE in a relatively close price area (4.32 and 3.90, in the case of FORD), I start thinking about a move in the other direction, especially when a pattern begins to emerge, like this double bottom possibility at 4.03 and 4.05.

The Ichimoku Kinko Hyo chart also is shaping up nicely for a possible rally (next post).

That's why I was interested in the earnings, wondering why this looks so grossly undervalued on the P/E below 10.

FORD rallied to 6.05 yesterday, completed a Symmetrical Triangle to the downside, and dropped almost 12%, to 5.34, from the 6.05 high on the day.

Possible H&S Top forming on the intraday.  Head would be yesterday's Symmetrical Triangle.  Neckline: 5.29 and 5.34.

This is looking suspiciously like the Right Shoulder of a H&S Top.  I decided to sell into strength here, especially with the QQQQ pushing up against resistance (See World Indices folder, QQQQ folder, if interested).

FORD completed the Right Shoulder, looks to have gone into a Bear Flag, broke the neckline and Bear Flag, then broke the 5.29 low of the pattern.

Company disappointed investors this year.
Recovered from lows, but, has been unable to get out of consolidation pattern.
Things may be looking better,
But still  don't like the way it is hovering around the MA's with failed penant after failed penant, may revisit lows again before something positive breaks for this one.
Looks to be wanting to breakout from this,
Symmetrical Triangle (continuation) Pattern......

This one is being followed by James Boric from Agora financial, says its 1 of 6 must own because of growth potential..............

These guys have good following might be the cause for the recent runup.

Holygrale,

Thanks for posting that.  Applause.

Back in late August early September (if you care to scroll up), setravis and I were trying to figure out if the fundamentals were as good as they appeared to be.  setravis' chart had a P/E of 7, I think, and I saw 8 or 9 somewhere else.

Chart-wise, this is looking eerily similar to what it looked like going into April earnings, when we had the possibilitity of a Bullish Inverse H&S pattern.  That was a disaster.  FORD gapped down below it, MADE the 4.32 pattern target, and darned near MADE the 3.90 target IN PLAY from the November, 2005 break of the massive H&S Top.

Going into October earnings, we've got a nice, bullish-looking 6-month W-Bottom in place.  I'll show you a close-up of that next.

For anyone not familiar with a W-Bottom, it looks looks like the letter "W."

The Left Leg is the Green Channel that begins at the April earnings gap down, and ends at the 4.03 low.

The Middle of the "W" is the 7.38 high, right before the July earnings disappointment.  Sales were down 44%.  That's the "pivot" of the pattern that need to get taken out to the upside, to complete the pattern.

The Right Leg of the "W" is the rally off the 4.05 low.

The Inverse H&S (red circles) formed over 4-months.  Everyone still holding up there is playing for The Bears.  Many of them want out, and will sell any rally to that level.

This W-Bottom has been forming over 6-months.  These candles are playing for The Bulls.  So in terms of the width of this base, it's certainly good enough to go up and start attacking 4-months worth of Bears, starting at 8.05 resistance.

The obvious question is, are The Bulls going to get any help from earnings, or is this going to be yet another earnings disaster?  :P

Technically, if FORD should gap up and get through the 7.38 "pivot" for the W-Bottom, we'd not only have the W-Bottom breakout, we'd also have a 6-month Bullish Island Reversal.  Gap Down from April earnings...Gap Up on October earnings/analyst upgrades?

Target is on the chart.

If you can find out any more about why Boric thinks this is 1 of 6 "must own" stocks, Holygrale, I sure would be interested and would appreciate it.

After these horrilbe gaps down on earnings, given how nice this base looks, it's conceivable that FORD could have that Bullish Island Reversal on a positive earnings surprise.

EDIT: Does anyone know when FORD reports? TIA.

Heres the write-up.

There are 5,586 small-cap stocks that trade on a major exchange right now. But you should only consider investing in six of them.

Two days ago, I ran my favorite screen looking for solid small-cap companies worth owning right now.

Year-to-date months, the companies I have recommended from this (and a similar) list are up an average of 21% so far. But I expect that number will continue to grow. You see...

********************************

Follow the Insiders to Huge Gains

In case you're not familiar with it, tracking insider buying is one of the best ways to find great investment opportunities.

********************************

Unlike many small-cap companies, these all have solid business plans. They are all making money. They are generating cash from operations. They have little (if any) debt, tons of cash and, most importantly, they have gotten stronger and stronger over the last three-five years.

Each company on this short list had to have:

Positive cash flow in each of the last 3 years.
Rising net income in each of the last 2 years.
Rising net profit margins in each of the last 5 years.
Revenue growth in each of the last 5 years.
More cash than total debt.
Over time, these are exactly the kinds of companies that will make shareholders wealthy. So without further ado, here are the only six companies that currently meet all five wealth-generating requirements:

Forward Industries, Inc. (FORD:NASDAQ): FORD makes cell phone cases, clips and accessories for major manufacturers like Motorola and Nokia. It has a clean balance sheet with $17 million in cash and zero long-term debt. Forward's net income and sales have increased at a 46% and 124% clip, respectively, over the last three years. And the company has been free-cash-flow positive in each of those years as well.

Rumor is they were selected by Apple to make their IPhone...from Yahoo boards. I would say shorts are covering just in case it is true.
