GigaMedia takes up 16% stake in Taiwan game firm Softstar

Softstar Entertainment, a developer of online games in Taiwan, on June 11 announced that GigaMedia, a Taiwan-based provider of broadband Internet-based services and content, has underwritten all of its 10 million new preferred shares issued to raise additional capital, to become a new shareholder with a stake of about 16%. The preferred shares are at a par value of NT$10 and were sold at NT$6 per share, Softstar indicated. Since NASDAQ-listed GigaMedia has set up joint ventures in China and Southeast Asia, the investment is expected to help Softstar further tap overseas markets, Softstar indicated.

GIGM continues to expand, thanks for posting the news la-onda :)

The stock finally touched its key ascending support level today. Since today was a very positive day for the general market and GIGM traded down, perhaps today marked the point of "no more hope" for weak hand holders, and the stock made the low right at support.

But this is just short term mambo jumbo. Longer term GIGM's fundamentals have nowhere to go but up, because many of the company's big investments still aren't contributing to the top and bottom line.

I'll keep holding GIGM for the long term.

David Randolph

GIGM has been showing relative weakness over the last couple of days. But I don't give much credit to these short term factors, or else I would be flipping stocks madly, because these indications are always changing.

I think that GIGM continues to be influenced by misinterpretation of Q2 guidance, with people thinking "lower sequential revenues, due to seasonality", instead of "lower growth on a sequential basis than in Q1 2007 over Q4 2006".

Slower growth is a lot different than "sequential decline", especially when the slower growth is compared to a 50% QoQ growth.

Everything is setting up for a positive surprise when the company releases Q2 earnings in August. I'll keep holding GIGM.

I think you may not have to wait that long..(till earnings to see some strength)..GIGM is usually strong after options expiry. We should be back above 15 on Monday :)

Yes, still holding.......sorry for the late reply :-[, pressed for time these days.
I would try to buy in on any weakness.
The "Big Boys" are trying to take this one down!
If you have the time and some loose change, Jump on this one for the ride up,
Just look at NCTY (The9 LTD) the closest competator to GIGM.
GIGM Should be there soon.

Sounds good nicknite20, nice comeback after the lower open on Friday. As one can see on the chart below GIGM was right at its ascending support level, and it reacted positively to that support area, on volume above average.

As one can read on this thread and the latest earnings press release, most of GIGM's investments, mainly in the Asian Games division, are still about to start producing serious revenues and profits. For example, Hellgate: London, to be launched in October 30, 2007, can be a huge hit.

If we consider that The9 (NCTY), another Chinese online gaming company, only has one game and is valued by the market at $1.1 B, we can see that this game alone may more than double GIGM's value, which currently is just $762 M.

I'll keep holding GIGM.

David Randolph

GIGM was up yesterday, down today ... it actually closed just a bit below the medium term ascending trendline on the chart below. However, GIGM is one of the stock's I have more confidence in the Main Portfolio, and I'm going to stick with it whatever happens to the stock price.

Is there any progress on Yukiii have a place for his on portfolio?
My investment strategy is similar. I don't invest in all 15 stocks in the on fire portfolio, but invest in the top ones based on my own analysis, while using David's research as a basis. I haven't always been invested in david's 5 top performing stocks, but this startegy has stopped me from investing in the a lot of the biggest losers in the portfolio and has outperformed the 3 stocks portfolio. I am not trying to knock David. He is doing a great job, without his analysis, and suggestions I would have never found some of the bigger winners I have. I think it is best to use David's analysis and suggestions as a guide and make investment decisons on your own.

Yes, Ramsburg needs to make a few technical tweaks (or yukiii could accidentally delete www.3stocksonfire.org from the Earth), but I guess a couple of weeks from now everything will be ready. I also need to discuss details with yukiii ... I don't know if he has the will power to do this, it takes a lot of effort and especially a lot of nerve to show up when things go south. I can do it because I have eight years of experience doing similar jobs.

Anyway, we'll set up things for him, he'll then take the chance if he wants to. No problem if he opts not to do it.

Thanks for your kind words eggman11, I guess most people use the service that way. I'm glad if you can beat the Main Portfolio's return, which is up 18.4% so far in 2007. I'm quite pleased with the results and I believe we're on track for a 30-40% year which is my long term objective. But of course, if you can do better by outsmarting which picks are the best or by timing them, sounds great by me.

Another issue are the valuable experiences I believe one gets here. I think I'm able to explain why I buy, hold or sell, so one can learn from my mistakes and successes. I also learn from what you guys disclose about your strategies and actual experiences. So thanks a lot for your continuous support!
