NVTL has been showing why letting the profits run is so important. The best just keeps getting better, and now I have a 98% profit on this stock (but I'm not counting the money).

The way things are going NVTL will surely beat its internal 2nd quarter guidance. I'm starting to consider taking profits on an eventual gap up on the news, regardless of my valuation model.

The valuation model is a tool, not an obligation. And I sure remember what happened with SILC, where I also had a 100% profit, didn't take it when it was obvious the stock would go down over the short term and ended up bailing out with a 38% profit, because of having weak hands ::)

For now I'll keep on holding NVTL.

Wednesday July 18, 8:00 am ET
Ovation MC950D HSUPA USB Modem Combines the World's Smallest Form Factor with Cutting Edge 3G Technology to Provide Unprecedented Broadband User Experience

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Novatel Wireless, Inc., (Nasdaq:NVTL - News) a leading provider of wireless broadband solutions, today announced the Ovation MC950D USB Modem, a HSUPA Mobile Broadband device that carries the distinction of being the world's smallest HSUPA USB modem. The MC950D also delivers marquis performance with upload and downlink speeds that meet or exceed traditional home DSL and cable modems.

Optimized for HSPA and EDGE/GPRS worldwide networks, the Ovation MC950D is a tri-band HSPA and quad band EDGE/GPRS modem designed to be extremely durable and fit comfortably in any pocket. For use in the home, at the office, or on the road, the MC950D provides instant on-the-go mobile broadband access to surf the net, check email, access important business documents and much more.

With support for 7.2 Mbps downlink speeds and 2.1 Mbps uplink upon launch, the MC950D offers users notably faster speeds than legacy mobile data modems.

The Ovation MC950D packs an impressive assortment of features into its miniature form factor, including fully integrated diversity antennae, receiver diversity and equalizer support to improve performance in noisy and highly mobile environments. Mobilink(TM) Lite Connection Manager Software is pre-installed on the device, significantly improving the user's out-of-box experience by eliminating the need to install drivers from a CD.

The Ovation MC950D is currently in the final stages of testing with leading carriers throughout EMEA, and is expected to be commercially available this quarter through a variety of Novatel Wireless's new and existing tier-one operator customers.

One of the things I like about NVTL's products is that they're always being upgraded, which means continuous demand over the long term (also R&D costs, but that's another story).

Unfortunately the good news wasn't enough to send shares even higher, because when the general market goes down, people usually rush to take profits on their biggest winners.

We still have about three weeks until NVTL reposts 2nd quarter earnings, I'll comfortably continue holding the stock.

Zacks had a few words about NVTL today:

«Aggressive Growth - Novatel Wireless, Inc. (Nasdaq: NVTL)

Novatel's stock has been on fire, up almost 200% year-to-date. Earnings estimates have soared for this year. Over the past 90 days, this year's numbers have risen 27 cents to 90 cents per share. The company has exceeded estimates by an average of 43% over the past two quarters. NVTL's balance sheet is in great shape with no debt on the books.»

The stock rose 1.76% on the day. I'll keep holding.

David, what do you think is happening with NVTL today?  It looks like a small head and shoulders has formed in the last 20 days.  From a technical viewpoint, where do you think we're heading?

QuoteDavid, what do you think is happening with NVTL today?

The general market is selling off hard, people need to take profits where they have them to compensate for losses elsewhere. Not company specific, at least not that I know of.

QuoteIt looks like a small head and shoulders has formed in the last 20 days.

I don't see it in my chart kenmann.

QuoteFrom a technical viewpoint, where do you think we're heading?

The stock should be able to close above $26.44, or else it will probably touch the 50 days SMA support, which currently stands at $24.11. Longer term I believe the bull trend will continue and we'll see NVTL comfortably above $30.

NVTL: JMP Sec Cuts to Mkt Perform from Mkt Outperform; Analyst Notes
Friday , July 20, 2007 14:35ET
Issuer: Novatel Wireless Inc (NasdaqNM: NVTL)
Analyst Firm:  JMP Securities
Ratings Action: DOWNGRADE
Current Rating: Mkt Perform (from Mkt Outperform)

Analyst Comments: According to the firm, Sprint (S) is discontinuing the very popular Novatel U720 USB modem, as the carrier awaits availability of Novatel's next-generation, small form factor wireless USB solution. They believe Novatel's next-generation product will be available toward the end of September at Sprint, leaving the possibility for a two-month gap in Novatel's sell-in results at Sprint. This gap should lead to temporary market share shifts in the data card market. Given the importance of Sprint as a customer of Novatel, the firm feels this transition will make it more difficult for Novatel to deliver a revenue and EPS surprise during the September quarter.

Thanks for sharing this la-onda :)

Downgrading because of a temporary issue ... no wonder why people are so short term oriented.

Anyway, most investor's recognize NVTL's long term story and every time the stock dips, they show up to buy. Volume on Friday was the highest in two and a half months (at 3,987,100 shares) and the stock closed above the $26.44 short term support. I guess the people that sold today will be buying back when the stock dips again, from $33 to $30 ;D

I'll keep on holding NVTL.

David Randolph

NVTL has been sustaining all the "profit takers" very well, closing above the $26.44 short term support for the second time. Earnings will be out just at August 6th, I think we'll probably have another bull leg that takes NVTL above $30 before earnings. We'll see, I'll keep holding NVTL, it is certainly worth more than $821 M.

David Randolph

NVTL has been holding up better than most. When the general market comes back up, and I'm positive that within some time, it will, NVTL will make a run towards $30 plus.

David Randolph

There were news out today showing new uses for NVTL's products:

• Novatel Wireless Partners with ICG to Provide New Advertising Opportunities through Remote Digital Signage
Business Wire (Wed 8:00am)

The stock rose modestly today and the short term correction seems to be ending. I'll continue letting the profits run in NVTL.

David Randolph

NVTL was dragged down by the general market and closed below the $26.44 short term support level. But it also made a perfect touch on the 50 days SMA ascending support. I have no doubts NVTL will continue trending higher and I'll keep holding the stock.

ouch what a bad hit  ??? ::)

updated analyst info from 23rd:
Novatel Wireless downgraded to "market perform"

Monday, July 23, 2007 6:40:17 AM ET
JMP Securities

NEW YORK, July 23 (newratings.com) - Analyst Samuel Wilson of JMP Securities downgrades Novate Wireless Inc (NVTL.NAS) from "market outperform" to "market perform." The target price is set to $27.50.

In a research note published on July 20, the analyst mentions that the extremely popular Novatel U720 USB modem has been discontinued by Sprint and there would be a two month's gap before Novatel's next-generation product becomes available. Sprint has said that it would recommend Sierra Wireless' AirCard(R) 595U modem to its customers in the interim period. Product transition issues at Sprint are likely to make it pose challenges to Novatel achieving EPS and revenue upside in the September quarter, JMP Securities adds.

still HOLDING

berloga

I will hold all my stocks now. If I sell, I'll regret a month later. All these jitters are temporary. There is no reason for wireless modems to stop selling because some fellas go bankrupt on their homes. Americans should lighten up - stop buying termite infested ugly looking shacks and build some nice apartment homes where they can have people as friends, not rifles and handguns.
