Apple rises after iSuppli analysis says 8 gigabyte iPhone margin is 55 percent
Tuesday , July 03, 2007 16:36ET

By RACHEL METZ
AP Business Writer

NEW YORK, Jul 03, 2007 (AP Worldstream via COMTEX) -- Apple Inc.'s shares jumped in high-volume trading Tuesday after researchers said the company will reap a gross profit margin in excess of 55 percent on its 8 gigabyte iPhones.
Apple shares added $5.91, or 4.9 percent, to $127.17 in an abbreviated trading session that ended at 1 p.m. due to the upcoming July Fourth holiday. During the past year, the stock has traded between $50.16 and $127.61, running up in recent months in anticipation of the hybrid cell phone, media player and wireless Internet gadget's June 29 release.

On Tuesday, the research company iSuppli reported that a tear-down analysis of the iPhone showed its bill of materials and manufacturing costs totaled $265.83 (EUR 195.45). That means Apple would generate a margin of more than 55 percent for every 8 gigabyte iPhone it sold for $599 (EUR 440), iSuppli said in a report.
Eric Pratt, iSuppli's senior director of tear-down, said iSuppli is still fine-tuning its report and it now thinks the product's margin is more than 50 percent, when accounting for factors like royalties and software costs. He was not surprised by the margin, he said, because the company's earlier research-based modeling called for a basic iPhone cost of $264.85 (EUR 195).
Apple does not disclose its margins for specific products but iSuppli's estimated margin for the iPhone is in the ballpark of its iPod cousins.

The iPhone's margin is much higher than some smart phones, like the Motorola Q, Pratt said, but he expects similar margins from the new crop of smart phones, which include Nokia Corp.'s N95 and HTC Corp.'s HTC Touch.
"Apple has kind of opened up a whole new realm here in opportunities in handsets," he said.
Pacific Crest Securities analyst Andy Hargreaves thinks investors bought the stock Tuesday in part because of iSuppli's analysis, though he thinks the proposed margin is a bit high.

It's impossible to tell exactly how many iPhones Apple sold during the product's first few days on store shelves - Hargreaves estimates about 300,000, though other estimates range from 500,000 to 750,000, he said - and how accurate iSuppli's analysis is, but he agreed the combination could help Apple.

"If you combine good unit sales with better-than-expected margins, that's a very good benefit to cash flow," the analyst said.
Hargreaves also thinks shareholders are shrugging off earlier concerns that there would be a sell-the-news event when the iPhone launched. The product was released with much fanfare Friday evening, but Apple's shares barely budged when trading resumed Monday.
Some fairly large investors sold some of their position in Apple before the iPhone's launch, fearing it would result in a sell-off of Apple's stock, he said, but since that didn't happen some of these investors might buy more shares.

"I think people are buying back into the story and the potential of the iPhone, especially given the margin," he said.

Apple 4Q Earnings Beat Analyst Views
Monday October 22, 7:44 pm ET
By May Wong, AP Technology Writer
Apple 4Q Earnings Jump With Rising Computer, iPod Sales

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Apple Inc.'s fiscal fourth-quarter profits jumped 67 percent to cap a year that saw unprecedented momentum in its Macintosh computer business, continued demand for iPods and the successful launch of the iPhone.

For the three months that ended Sept. 30, Apple said Monday it earned $904 million, or $1.01 per share, compared with $542 million, or 62 cents per share, in the year-ago quarter.

Apple easily beat the expectations of analysts polled by Thomson Financial, who predicted earnings per share of 86 cents on sales of $6.07 billion.

Revenue totaled $6.22 billion, compared with $4.84 billion in the same quarter last year.

Apple's stock price, which has more than doubled since January, rose $3.94, or 2.3 percent, to close at $174.36. After the earnings report, shares climbed about $12, almost 7 percent, in extended trading.

Apple said it shipped a record 2.16 million Macs in the quarter, an increase of 34 percent, while it sold 10.2 million iPods, up 17 percent. The debut of a slate of new iPods in September helped accelerate sales and is expected to boost holiday revenues, Apple officials said.

The company has sold more than 120 million iPods since the product's 2001 debut.

Yet the iPhone, a combination cell phone and media player, is already tracking better than the iPod, Apple's chief operating officer Tim Cook told analysts in a conference call.

In the first full quarter of iPhone sales -- a number many on Wall Street were waiting for -- Apple said it sold 1.12 million units, bringing the cumulative total to 1.39 million since the product debuted on June 29.

"It took us over two years to achieve a comparable number for the iPod," Cook said. "So we're thrilled here."

Sales of the iPhone picked up in September after Apple knocked $200 off the price of the 8-gigabyte model, bringing it down to $399, Cook said, but he declined to be more specific.

The swift price cut just 10 weeks after the gadget hit the market angered some early customers, a response that prompted Apple to make amends by offering them a $100 store credit.

Apple's efforts to prevent customers from modifying, or "unlocking," iPhones to work on networks other than Apple's carrier partner in the United States, AT&T Corp., also frustrated users -- and sparked lawsuits.

Apple's "guess" is that buyers of 250,000 of the 1.4 million iPhones sold so far intended to unlock them, Cook said.

In an apparent about-face that allayed developer grumblings, Apple announced last week it will open the device to third-party applications.

Despite the complaints, Apple came out shining.

For the full fiscal year, Apple earned a record $3.5 billion, up more than 75 percent from last year when it earned $1.99 billion. Yearly sales reached over $24 billion, a 24 percent jump from fiscal 2006.

"We had a fantastic quarter and year," said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple's chief financial officer.

Apple's fortunes have skyrocketed in recent years as its iPods became a cultural phenomenon. The portable players, which work with Macs as well as Microsoft Corp. Windows-based machines, have also drawn more people to Apple's software and design, leading to what analysts call a "halo effect" on Mac sales.

After hovering for years with a 2 percent to 3 percent share of the PC market in the United States, Apple's slice has now grown to 8 percent, according to the latest figures from market researcher Gartner Inc.

Now, many investors are betting Apple's foray into the cell phone market will be another lucrative engine.

The iPhone "is a game-changing product," said Stephen Coleman, chief investment officer at Daedalus Capital LLC.

Based on income from the iPhone alone, he said, "I expect Apple's earnings to continually grow materially at 50 percent a year, for the next three years."

Apple reiterated Monday its previous target of selling 10 million iPhones in 2008, helped by the launch of the iPhone in Europe next month, then in Asia next year.

For the current quarter, Apple said it expects earnings of about $1.42 per share on revenue of about $9.2 billion. Analysts on average had been expecting earnings of $1.39 per share on sales of $8.58 billion.

"We're looking forward to a strong December quarter as we enter the holiday season with Apple's best products ever," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO.

Reuters
Apple results top targets, Mac sales strong
Monday October 22, 7:33 pm ET
By Scott Hillis

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Apple Inc blew by analysts' estimates with a 67 percent rise in profit on Monday as the popularity of its iPhone and iPod boosted Macintosh computer sales, and its shares jumped 7 percent.

"There's no question that Mac sales are still having a halo effect from the iPod and iPhone," said Tim Bajarin, president of technology consulting company Creative Strategies.

Net profit rose to $904 million, or $1.01 per share, in its fiscal fourth quarter, from $542 million, or 62 cents per share, a year ago. Revenue rose 29 percent to $6.22 billion.

That handily beat Wall Street's average targets of 85 cents per share in profit and $6.06 billion of revenue, according to Reuters Estimates.

Apple also benefited from falling prices of electronic components, lifting its gross profit margin to 33.6 percent. The company said it expects that to fall to 31 percent in its current quarter as prices for some parts start to rise again.

Apple also forecast first-quarter revenue of $9.2 billion, well ahead of the $8.7 billion average Wall Street target.

"It appears that they are expecting an extremely solid holiday shopping season and, I would guess, strength from the launch of the iPhone in Europe," said analyst Shannon Cross of Cross Research.

Apple shipped 1.12 million units of the iPhone, which went on sale in the United States in late June. That was toward the high end of analysts' forecasts.

Some investors had hoped for even better performance from the iPhone but said sales could pick up following Apple's move last week to let users install other software on the devices.

"They have real value in the iPhone. We were a little disappointed in the sales number itself. More and more people will find the phone more useful as they add outside applications," said Nicholas Kaiser, president of Saturna Capital, which owns Apple shares in mutual funds and private accounts.

Apple sold 2.2 million Macs in the quarter, up 34 percent from a year earlier and above Wall Street expectations of about 2 million.

IPod sales were up 17 percent from a year earlier, but at 10.2 million units, came in below most expectations. Apple rolled out new iPods at the start of its current quarter.

"The product line that has the most reasons to have questions about is iPod, which in many ways is a victim of its own success," said Barry Jaruzelski, head of Booz Allen Hamilton's strategy and innovation practice. "At some point iPod will plateau."

Shares of Apple have more than doubled since the start of the year, when Chief Executive Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone. The stock trades at 37 times its expected 2008 profit, at the high end of the company's historical range.

Shares of Apple rose to $184.39 in after-hours trade from a Nasdaq close of $174.36.

Mac, iPhone sales lead Apple growth.......

WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Apple Inc. late Wednesday reported that second-quarter profit rose 36% from a year ago as revenue climbed above $7 billion on strong sales of Macintosh PCs and iPhones.

AAPL 162.89, +2.69, +1.7%) shares rose about 1.3% in premarket trades Thursday even though the company issued a third-quarter forecast that was conservative and fell below analysts' consensus averages.
Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said Apple earned $1.05 billion, or $1.16 a share, on $7.51 billion in revenue for the quarter, compared with the same period a year ago when Apple earned $770 million, or 87 cents a share, on sales of $5.26 billion.
The results topped Apple's forecast for a profit of 94 cents a share and $6.8 billion in revenue. Analysts surveyed by FactSet Research had estimated Apple would earn $1.05 a share on sales of $7 billion.

highlight of the quarter was 2.29 million Macintosh computers sold, a 51% increase over the past year's second quarter. Barry Jaruzelski, a managing partner with Booz, Allen, Hamilton, said the results show that the Mac is now the driving the Apple machine.
"The Mac is on a tear," Jaruzelski said. "The halo effect of the iPod has resulted in a broader product portfolio, and now the Mac can pull the boat along for a while."
While the Mac has picked up steam, iPod sales showed some signs of reaching the plateau that had long been anticipated. Apple said it sold 10.6 million iPods during the quarter, just a 1% rise from the same period a year ago.
Gross margins as a percentage of revenue were 32.9%, down from 35.1% a year ago.
"The revenue and unit (sales) were very strong," said Shaw Wu, of American Technology Research. "However, the margins were lighter than expected." Wu cut his rating on Apple's stock to hold from buy on Tuesday. Complete technology coverage.
Apple also said it sold 1.7 million iPhones during the quarter. Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook said, "We're confident in hitting the 10 million (sales target) for the year."
In recent weeks, questions were raised about iPhone shortages at Apple retail stores, with speculation rising that the company was working through its inventories in order to prepare for the release of a third-generation, or 3G iPhone.
However, Cook said he believed the main reason for the lower stock of iPhones was because, "there are more phones being bought there with the intention of unlocking (the phone), which remains a significant number."
For its fiscal third-quarter, Oppenheimer said the company expects to earn $1 a share on revenue of $7.2 billion. Analysts had previously forecast Apple would earn $1.09 a share on $7.23 billion in sales.
Prior to the earnings call, Apple said it had acquired P.A. Semi, a privately held chipmaker based in Santa Clara, Calif. which makes power-efficient chips that are mostly used in networking and telecom equipment.
Apple didn't disclose terms of the deal, but reports said Apple paid $278 million.

On the flip side, If you bought shares of Apple (Nasdaq: AAPL) during the heart of the financial crisis (September 2008) when its shares had fallen to around $110. The naysayers were talking down Apple because it sold high-end, arguably luxury goods in a crummy economy.

Apple briefly passes Exxon as largest U.S. company...

On Tuesday August 9, 2011, 2:18 pm

SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Apple Inc briefly edged past Exxon Mobil Corp to become the most valuable company in the United States after days of volatile stock market action.

The technology giant's market value rose on Tuesday to $341.5 billion, just above Exxon's $341.4 billion, even though the oil major's annual revenue is four times that of Apple's.

Exxon quickly regained the No. 1 spot as its shares rose and Apple's shed some of their gains, with stocks globally remaining volatile because of soft economic data and the downgrading of the United States' sovereign credit on Friday.

At 1:50 p.m. EDT Exxon's market cap was $339.3 billion while Apple's dipped to $338.8 billion.

Tuesday's move by Apple, which ended Exxon Mobil's run of more than five years at the top, capped a remarkable turnaround for a company that once teetered on the brink before Apple's Steve Jobs returned to resuscitate the company he co-founded.

Thirteen years ago, some analysts said Apple's value consisted of real estate holdings and cash on hand.

Apple joined, albeit briefly, a small group of companies that have held the top spot in the S&P 500, including General Electric, General Motors, IBM, Microsoft Corp and AT&T, according to Standard & Poor's Index Analytics

Since July 1, Apple's market capitalization has risen by more than $20 billion, fueled by optimism that a new version of its best-selling iPhone will lead to a monstrous second half of 2011.

Exxon's market cap, on the other hand, has slipped nearly $60 billion in the same period due to volatile crude oil prices.

Apple on Pace to Be Most Valuable Company...Maybe Ever
Apple's market value will rise to $480 billion over the next 12 months, surpassing Exxon as the most valuable company on earth, according to the updated price...

The Steve Jobs-led tech giant could even see its market value climb above $600 billion, according to the most bullish forecast on Wall Street from Ticonderoga Securities. That would top Cisco's record market capitalization of more than $550 billion reached in 2000 at the height of the Internet bubble.

"Apple continues to defy modern principles of economics and delivered the investment community something never seen before (e.g., quarterly revenue of $28.6 billion growing 80 percent year over year)," wrote Gleacher & Co. analyst Brian Marshall, in his updated report where he raised Apple's 12-month target price to $500 from $450.

"We expect Apple will become the largest market cap company on the planet when the stock hits approximately $445."

Apple's stock price (NASDAQ: AAPL) was around $388 on Thursday, up 20 percent from the start of the year after second quarter results Tuesday showed booming demand for the iPhone and iPad. With 926.9 million shares outstanding, Apple's current price puts its market capitalization at around $360 billion.

Who would have guessed that selling phones and tablet computers would become a more valuable enterprise than refining the fuel on which the global economy runs? Exxon Mobil's (NYSE: XOM) market value is currently the highest in the world at $410 billion. PetroChina is a distant third behind Apple at $271.6 billion.

"Given the momentum in Apple's portfolio and inexpensive valuation (10 times current year 2011 EPS, ex-cash), we believe the stock will ultimately reach our 12-month price target of $666," said Ticonderoga's Brian White, whose updated price target is up from a previous $612 forecast and is the highest among all analysts who cover the stock.

"The expansion of Apple's presence in the mobile phone market with the iPhone still remains in the early stages as the mobile Internet ramps around the world with increased smartphone penetration."

At least 12 analyst firms came out with price target increases after assessing this week's results, according to theflyonthewall.com. The new report with the lowest price target came from Morgan Stanley, which upped its forecast to just $468 from $428. At that price, Apple would still become the largest company in the world over the next year (assuming Exxon stays flat), sporting a market value of around $444 billion.

Analysts extrapolating from the shocking sales figures released this week are fueling the optimism. The bright outlook is also built around the release of Apple's cloud product and the iPhone5 this fall, according to analysts. There is also speculation about a China carrier deal and a new TV product that would complete Apple's so-called "halo effect" of mobile, office and home.

The technology landscape has certainly changed (largely because of Apple) since the time when Cisco's (NASDAQ: CSCO) market capitalization topped $550 billion and Internet euphoria had some predicting it would become the first $1 trillion company.

It's been quite a reversal of fortune for the world's largest maker of routers, as Cisco shares are down 75 percent since March 2000. Besides the bursting of the Internet bubble, Cisco's performance has been hurt by smart switching technology that would weaken demand for routers.

Acquisitions outside of its core business such as set-top box-maker Scientific Atlanta and Flip Video, have also dampened the outlook for the company, which now sports a market value of under $100 billion. This week, Cisco said it would reduce its workforce by 6,500 employees.
